Rats were fed diets containing either soy protein or casein and different levels of manganese, methionine, phytic acid, or arginine for 7 days and then fed test meals labeled with 2 microCi of 54Mn after an overnight fast. Retention of 54Mn in each rat was measured every other day for 21 days using a whole-body counter. Liver manganese was higher (P less than 0.0001) in soy protein-fed rats (8.8 micrograms/g) than in casein-fed rats (5.2 micrograms/g); manganese superoxide dismutase activity also was higher in soy protein-fed rats than in casein-fed rats (P less than 0.01). There was a significant interaction between manganese and protein which affected manganese absorption and biologic half-life of 54Mn. In a second experiment, rats fed soy protein-test meals retained more 54Mn (P less than 0.001) than casein-fed rats. Liver manganese (8.3 micrograms/g) in the soy protein group was also higher than that (5.7 micrograms/g) in the casein group (P less than 0.0001), but manganese superoxide dismutase activity was unaffected by protein. Supplementation with methionine increased 54Mn retention from both soy and casein diets (P less than 0.06); activity of manganese superoxide dismutase increased (P less than 0.05) but liver manganese did not change. The addition of arginine to casein diets had little effect on manganese bioavailability. Phytic acid affected neither manganese absorption nor biologic half-life in two experiments, but it depressed liver manganese in one experiment. These results suggest that neither arginine nor phytic acid was the component in soy protein which made manganese more available from soy protein diets than casein diets.  相似文献

Four experiments were done to characterize the interactions of copper, iron, and ascorbic acid with manganese in rats. All experiments were factorially arranged Dietary Mn concentrations were less than 1 micrograms/g (Mn0) and 50 micrograms/g (Mn+). Dietary Cu was less than 1 mg/g (Cu0) and 5 micrograms/g (Cu+); dietary Fe was 10 micrograms/g (Fe10) and 140 micrograms/g (Fe140). Ascorbic acid (Asc) was not added to the diet or added at a concentration of 10 g/kg diet. Experiment 1 had two variables, Mn and Cu; in Experiment 2, the variables were Mn and Asc. In Experiment 3, the variables were Mn, Cu, and Asc; in Experiment 4, they were Mn, Cu, and Fe. Definite interactions between Mn and Cu were observed, but they tended to be less pronounced than interactions between Mn and Fe. Cu depressed absorption of 54Mn and accelerated its turnover. In addition, adequate Cu (Cu+), compared with Cu0, depressed liver, plasma, and whole blood Mn of rats. Absorption of 67Cu was higher in animals fed Mn0 diets than in those fed Mn+. Ascorbic acid depressed Mn superoxide dismutase activity and increased Cu superoxide dismutase activity in the heart. The addition of ascorbic acid to the diet did not affect Mn concentration in the liver or blood. Absorption of 54Mn was depressed in rats fed Fe140 compared with those fed Fe10. Interactions among Fe, Cu, and Mn resulted in a tendency for Mn superoxide dismutase activity to be lower in rats fed Fe140 than in rats fed Fe10. Within the physiologic range of dietary concentrations, Mn and Cu have opposite effects on many factors that tend to balance one another. The effects of ascorbic acid on Mn metabolism are much less pronounced than effects of dietary Cu, which in turn affects Mn metabolism less than does Fe.  相似文献

There is evidence that manganese (Mn) metabolism may be altered by the form and amount of dietary fat. Also, iron (Fe) absorption is greater with saturated fats, as compared to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). The absorption of Fe and Mn are interrelated in many aspects; therefore, the form of dietary fat may indirectly alter Mn absorption. The reported studies were conducted to determine whether saturated fat, as compared to unsaturated fat, affected Mn absorption, retention, and metabolism. In experiment I, adult rats were fed diets containing either 0.7 or 100.4 μg/g Mn with the fat source as high-linoleic safflower oil or stearic acid. After 2 wk of equilibration, the animals were fed a test meal of 54Mn followed by whole-body counting for 10 d. Manganese absorption was significantly (p<0.05) lower in the stearic acid group (0.9–4.8%) than in the safflower oil group (20–33.8%); however, the biological half-life was shorter in the safflower oil group. Retention of 54Mn and total Mn was always significantly (p<0.05) greater in the safflower oil group when dietary Mn was low, but it was the same when dietary Mn was high. In experiment II, weanling rats were fed 1.3, 39.3, or 174.6 μg Mn/g and either stearate, high-oleic safflower oil or high-linoleic safflower oil for 8 wk. Long-term feeding of the stearate and low Mn-containing diet resulted in a significant (p<0.0001) reduction in heart superoxide dismutase activity and kidney and liver Mn concentrations compared to the other diets. These data show that stearic acid inhibitits Mn absorption, but it may not inhibit Mn retention when dietary Mn is high. Two experiments were done in which anemic rats were fed diets containing safflower oil or stearic acid and low (10 ppm) or adequate (39-42 ppm) iron. Diets were 24% fat by weight. In the stearic acid diets, 2% (Experiment 1) or 4% (Experiment 2) of the fat was supplied by safflower oil to satisfy essential fatty acid requirements. Repletion of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and liver iron was assessed. Compared with safflower oil in both experiments, stearic acid had a significant positive effect (P less than 0.0001) on repletion of hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct), and liver iron concentration; the effect on Hb and Hct was most pronounced when dietary iron was low. When expressed as g Hb/mg Fe intake, Hb repletion was affected by a significant interaction between fat and Fe (P less than 0.002) and was greatest in rats fed low iron stearic acid diets. In a third experiment, rats were fed low dietary iron and 24% safflower oil, 20% stearic acid + 4% safflower oil, 3.2% stearic acid + 20.8% safflower oil, or 20% beef tallow + 4% safflower oil. The 20% beef tallow provided 3.2% stearic acid in the total diet. The response of Hb and Hct were similar to those in the first two experiments for rats fed safflower oil or stearic acid. Rats fed beef tallow had significantly greater (P less than 0.05) Hb and Hct repletion than did rats fed safflower oil, although the degree of repletion was less than that observed in rats fed 20% stearic acid. There was no difference in iron repletion of rats fed 3.2% stearic acid and rats fed beef tallow. We conclude that stearic acid enhances iron utilization by rats.  相似文献

The bioavailability of selenium (Se) from veal, chicken, beef, pork, lamb, flounder, tuna, selenomethionine (SeMet), and sodium selenite was assessed in Se-deficient Fischer-344 rats. Se as veal, chicken, beef, pork, lamb, flounder, tuna, SeMet, and sodium selenite was added to torula yeast (TY) basal diets to comprise Se-inadequate (0.05 mg Se/kg) diets. Se as sodium selenite was added to a TY basal diet to comprise a Se-adequate (0.10 mg Se/kg), Se-control diet. The experimental diets were fed to weanling Fischer-344 rats that had been subjected to dietary Se depletion for 6 wk. After 9 wk of the dietary Se repletion, relative activity of liver glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) from the different dietary groups compared with control rats (100%) was: flounder 106%, tuna 101%, pork 86%, sodium selenite 81%, SeMet 80%, beef 80%, chicken 77%, veal 77%, and lamb 58%. Se from flounder was the most efficient at restoring Se concentrations in the liver and skeletal muscle. Se from sodium selenite, SeMet, beef, veal, chicken, pork, lamb, and tuna was not dietarily sufficient to restore liver and muscle Se after 9 wk of recovery following a 6-wk period of Se depletion.  相似文献

Interactions between manganese (Mn) deficiency and streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetes with respect to tissue antioxidant status were investigated in male, Sprague-Dawley rats. All rats were fed either a Mn-deficient (1 ppm) or a Mn-sufficient (45 ppm) diet for 8 wk. Diabetes was then induced by tail-vein injection of STZ (60 mg/kg body weight), after which the rats were kept for an additional 4 or 8 wk. The control groups comprised rats not injected with STZ and fed either Mn-deficient or Mn-sufficient diets for a total of 12 wk. The Mn-deficient diet decreased the activities of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in kidney and heart, and of copperzinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) in kidney, in the non-diabetic animals. In the diabetic rats, the Mn-deficient diet induced more pronounced decreases in activities of these same enzymes, and also increased liver MnSOD activity. Plasma and hepatic vitamin E levels increased progressively with the duration of diabetes, independent of dietary Mn intake. Lipid peroxidation, as measured by H2O2-induced production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in erythrocytes, also increased, concomitant with decreased liver and kidney glutathione (GSH) levels. These findings demonstrate for the first time an interactive effective between Mn deficiency and STZ-diabetes, resulting in amplification of tissue antioxidant changes seen with either Mn deficiency or STZ-diabetes alone. This effect of Mn deprivation in experimental diabetes suggests a physiological role for Mn as an antioxidant nutrient.  相似文献

The effect of manganese exposure (Mn2+ 4 mg Mn/kg intraperitoneally) on certain bioantioxidants in brain, liver, kidney and testes in growing rats maintained on 21% and 8% casein diet were investigated. Manganese administration for 30 days caused significant reduction in the level of GSH (reduced glutathione) in liver and testes and GR (glutathione reductase) and G-6-PDH (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) in brain, liver and testes. The magnitude of alteration was greater in 8% casein diet fed animals compared to rats maintained on 21% casein diet. These results indicate that protein deficient animals are more susceptible to the manganese induced biochemical changes in various tissues. The mechanism of such changes is discussed.  相似文献

Four lactating dairy cows were used in two experiments to study the effects of the roughage to concentrate ratio in the diet on nitrogen balance, plasma urea, urinary urea, milk urea and urinary purine derivatives. The use of the allantoin to creatinine ratio in spot samples of urine as an index of the urinary allantoin excretion was also evaluated. Four isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets were formulated according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Factor I was concentrate content. The roughage to concentrate ratios were 65:35 and 35:65 for the high roughage and high concentrate diets, respectively. Factor II was fat content, which was 2.8% and 5.8% for the low and high fat diets, respectively. In Experiment 1 cows were fed diets with low fat content, and in Experiment 2 cows were fed diets with high fat content. In both experiments, diets were fed according to a change-over design. Nitrogen balance was not affected by the treatments. In cows fed high concentrate diets the amount and the proportion of nitrogen excreted in milk, as well as milk production was higher than in cows fed the high roughage diets. In both experiments, as an overall effect, the urea levels in plasma, urine and morning milk were higher, although the total urinary excretion of urea was lower, for the high concentrate diets. Urinary allantoin excretion was higher, although not significantly in Experiment 1, for the high concentrate diets. The allantoin to creatinine ratio in spot samples of urine showed the same pattern as the total allantoin excretion. Urinary creatinine excretion appeared to be affected by the diet.  相似文献

We hypothesized that manganese deficient animals fed high vs moderate levels of polyunsaturated fat would either manifest evidence of increased oxidative stress or would experience compensatory changes in antioxidant enzymes and/or shifts in manganese utilization that result in decreased endogenous gut manganese losses. Rats (females in Study 1, males in Study 2,n = 8/treatment) were fed diets that contained 5 or 20% corn oil by weight and either 0.01 or 1.5 μmol manganese/g diet. In study 2,54Mn complexed to albumin was injected into the portal vein to assess gut endogenous losses of manganese. The manganese deficient rats:
1.  Had 30–50% lower liver, tibia, kidney, spleen, and pancreas manganese concentrations than manganese adequate rats;
2.  Conserved manganese through ≈70-fold reductions in endogenous fecal losses of manganese;
3.  Had lower heart manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) activity; and
4.  Experienced only two minor compensatory changes in the activity of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) and catalase.
Gut endogenous losses of manganese tended to account for a smaller proportion of absorbed manganese in rats fed high-fat diets; otherwise fat intake had few effects on tissue manganese concentrations.  相似文献

The replacement of dietary starch by sucrose results in an increase in hepatic lipogenesis in the rat. When corn oil (4% by weight or 9% of the energy content of the diet) was included with the sucrose (20% by weight, 20% of the energy content) the lipogenic effect of the sucrose was completely suppressed. In contrast, when beef tallow replaced the corn oil, the induced activity caused by the sucrose was reduced by only approximately 20%. No significant differences were observed between males and females. These diets containing sucrose supplemented with either 4% (w/w) corn oil or 4% (w/w) beef tallow, were then used to ascertain whether or not the effects on hepatic lipogenesis were reflected in changes in the amount of fat deposited during growth from 4--24 weeks of age. It was shown that the percentage body fat was only statistically different (P less than 0.05) when animals fed sucrose-supplemented diets were compared with animals fed diets supplemented with sucrose and beef tallow. However, there were no significant differences in total carcass weight of these rats. The results are discussed in terms of the relative contribution of liver and adipose tissue to total lipogenesis and the factors which control the lipogenic activity in the two tissues.  相似文献

Previous investigations have demonstrated a marked effect of soy protein on multiple physiological parameters associated with the metabolic syndrome (MS). This preliminary study investigated the physiological effects of soy-based diets on cardiovascular risk in a unique rodent model that reflects early stages of MS. Briefly, lean male SHHF (+/cp) rats were randomly assigned to the following treatment groups: casein (control, C); low-isoflavone (LIS) soy protein isolate; high-isoflavone (HIS) soy protein isolate; or C+ 0.01 % rosiglitazone (CR). Rats were fed for thirty-six weeks. Liver weight, heart weight, total plasma cholesterol, fasting blood glucose were lower in soy-fed animals compared to control (p < 0.01). Body weight, kidney weight, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), fasting plasma insulin, and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) score were also lower in LIS-fed rodents (p < 0.05) compared to casein treatment. All diet groups exhibited lower urine protein (p < 0.01) and small arteriole content (p < 0.05) compared to controls. LIS feed had a slightly more profound influence on body weight, liver metabolism, and insulin sensitivity. However, both soy diets exhibited marked improvements over a casein-based diet.  相似文献

The effects of 2 oral contraceptives, Ovulen and Norlestrin, were studied in monkeys fed adequate protein and low protein diets. The experiment was carried out in parts. In the first one, the administration of contraceptives was cyclic and similar to that employed in human subjects. In the other experiments, the contraceptives were given continuously and an attempt was made to exaggerate the deleterious effects of the oral contraceptive on the liver by including small doses of a known hepatotoxic agent, aflatoxin (AT). In Experiment 1, 45 female monkeys were divided into 2 groups of 20 and 25 and received an adequate protein (16%) and low protein diet (4%) respectively. Each monkey was fed 1/5 of a tablet of Ovulen or Norlestrin orally for 3 weeks, and then administration was discontinued for 1 week. In Experiment 2, 35 female monkeys were divided into 7 groups of 5 each. All the animals recieved 4% protein diet. 5 groups were tube fed at the rate of 100 cal/kg body weight, while 2 groups were given diet ad libitum. Group I received the diet alone while groups II-V received 10 mcg AT, 25 mcg AT, 10 mcg AT plus 1/5 Ovulen tablets, and 25 mcg AT plus 1/5 Ovulen tablet respectively daily. Groups VI and VII received the diet ad libitum but were orally fed 75 mcg AT and 75 mcg AT plus 1/5 Ovulen tablet respectively. Serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase activity and alkaline phosphatase activity were studied at regular intervals after the administation of oral contraceptives in the experiments. Serum proteins and hemoglobin were also determined. Monkeys fed oral contraceptives showed increased serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase and alkaline phosphatase activities irrespective of the level of protein in the diet. Livers of animals receiving oral contraceptives were morphologically similar to the controls fed respective diets. The experiments were conducted for a period of almost 2 years.  相似文献

Growth rates and efficiency of food conversion of young chicks fed on diets marginally limiting in total nitrogen and containing 150 g/kg diet of flash-dried microbial cells (MC) with and without amino acid supplements, were measured in three experiments. Performance of these animals was compared with that of groups fed on a methioninefortified soya bean meal (SBM) control diet. In all experiments, chicks fed on the SBM control diet grew faster and were more efficient than chicks fed on the basal unsupplemented MC diet. In Experiment 1, arginine supplementation markedly enhanced weight gain and efficiency of food utilisation of chicks offered the basal MC diet; methionine had no effect. The second experiment demonstrated that a supplement containing methionine, arginine and tryptophan was more effective in augmenting the nutritional value of MC than either methionine with arginine or tryptophan with arginine. In the final experiment, weight gain and food intake of chicks fed on MC with supplements of arginine, methionine and tryptophan were increased markedly by additions of lysine and glutamic acid but not by addition of lysine alone. In all experiments, performance of animals in MC supplemented groups was lower than that of animals fed on the SBM control diet.  相似文献

L-Arginine is a common substrate for the enzymes arginase and nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Acute inhibition of arginase enzyme activity improves endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation, presumably by increasing availability of substrate for NOS. Arginase is activated by manganese (Mn), and the consumption of a Mn-deficient (Mn-) diet can result in low arginase activity. We hypothesize that endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation is greater in rats fed Mn- versus Mn sufficient (Mn+) diets. Newly weaned rats fed Mn+ diets (0.5 microg Mn/g; n = 12) versus Mn+ diets (45 microg Mn/g; n = 12) for 44 +/- 3 days had (i) lower liver and kidney Mn and arginase activity (P < or = 0.05), (ii) higher plasma L-arginine (P < or = 0.05), (iii) similar plasma and urine nitrate + nitrite, and (iv) similar staining for endothelial nitric oxide synthase in thoracic aorta. Vascular reactivity of thoracic aorta (approximately 720 microm i.d.) and small coronary arteries (approximately 110 microm i.d.) was evaluated using wire myographs. Acetylcholine (ACh; 10(-8)-10(-4) M) produced greater (P < or = 0.05) vasorelaxation in thoracic aorta from Mn- rats (e.g., maximal percent relaxation, 79 +/- 7%) versus Mn + rats (e.g., maximal percent relaxation, 54 +/- 9%) at 5 of 7 evaluated doses. Tension produced by NOS inhibition using N(G) monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA; 10(-3) M) and vasorelaxation evoked by (i) arginase inhibition using difluoromethylornithine (DFMO; 10(-7) M), (ii) ACh (10(-8)-10(-4) M) in the presence of DFMO, and (iii) sodium nitroprusside (10(-9)-10(-4) M) were unaffected by diet. No differences existed between groups concerning these responses in small coronary arteries. These findings support our hypothesis that endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation is greater in aortic segments from rats that consume Mn- versus Mn+ diets; however, responses from small coronary arteries were unaffected.  相似文献

To characterise the effects of dietary protein content on threonine metabolism during pregnancy, rats were fed diets containing 18% or 9% protein and then killed at different stages of gestation. Serum threonine concentrations fell significantly faster in the animals fed the diet containing 9% protein when compared to those fed the diet containing 18% protein. On day 4 of gestation the rate of threonine oxidation was higher in maternal liver homogenates prepared from the animals fed the diet containing 18% protein. The rate of threonine oxidation by liver homogenates fell as gestation proceeded in both diet groups. The activity of threonine dehydrogenase in the maternal liver was unaffected by dietary protein content at all stages of gestation. Serine-threonine dehydratase activity in homogenates of the maternal liver was transiently increased during the early stages of gestation in the animals fed high protein diets but was unchanged in the low protein groups. There was an increase in serine-threonine dehydratase activity in the kidney during the later stages of gestation but this was unaffected by the protein content of the maternal diet. These data show that the changes in free threonine concentrations cannot be accounted for through changes in the oxidation rate and suggest that some other factor influences the unusual metabolism of this amino acid during gestation.  相似文献

The objectives of the two experiments were to determine the respective effects and interactions of diet type (grass v. maize diets) and physical activity (grazing v. zero grazing) on lipogenic enzyme activities and adipose cell size in subcutaneous, perirenal and intermuscular adipose tissues and on plasma metabolites and hormones in Charolais steers. After weaning, the steers were assigned to two (Experiment 1, n = 24) or three (Experiment 2, n = 24) groups, with steers in Experiment 1 grazed grass or indoors maize-silage-fed and steers in Experiment 2 grazed grass, indoors cut grass- or indoors maize-silage-fed. Both experiments lasted for 23 months. All grass-fed animals were fed grass silage during the two winter seasons. During the two summer seasons, steers fed on grass were rotationally grazed on a perennial rye-grass pasture while steers fed on cut grass were fed indoors on freshly cut grass alone. Steers fed on maize silage were fed maize silage indoors during the entire experiment. All animals were reared for similar body weight and growth rates and slaughtered at the same age (31 to 32 months). Activities of lipogenic enzymes were significantly lower in the three adipose tissue sites of steers fed cut grass compared with maize silage, although there were less-marked effects in intermuscular adipose tissue. Plasma insulin and glucose concentrations were also lower in steers fed cut grass whereas plasma leptin concentration was similar. As body fat content was not affected by nutritional treatment, it is suggested that the decrease in potential lipogenic activity was associated with the nature of the diet and not to differences in available net energy. In other respects, grazed grass compared with eating cut grass did not affect lipogenic enzyme activities but decreased plasma leptin concentrations in the older steers and increased plasma non-esterified fatty acids and glucose concentrations without affecting adipose tissue weight and adipose cell size.  相似文献

Two experiments on replacement heifers (175±12 days of age) assessed the effects of forage particle length and moisture on feeding behavior. Both experiments used a replicated 3×3 Latin square design, with nine heifers per replication and three periods of 9 days each. Each group of nine heifers was housed in one pen with access to three electronic feed bins. In Experiment 1, hay chopped at different lengths was incorporated into three total mixed rations (TMR) all having the same ingredient and nutrient composition but differing in the percentage of long particles (>19 mm): 60% (Short), 64% (Medium) and 72% (Long). In Experiment 2, heifers were fed a TMR with the same ingredient and nutrient composition but differing in moisture content: 65% DM (Dry), 50% DM (Moderate), and 35% DM (Wet). In both experiments, feeding behavior during the last 5 days of each period was analyzed using a mixed model accounting for the fixed effects of treatment and period, and the random effects of replication and animal. In Experiment 1, dry matter intake (DMI) and eating rate (DMI/min) tended to increase, whereas daily eating time decreased as the feed particle size decreased. Heifers fed the Long diet selected in favor of long particles (>19 mm) and against Short (1.18 to 8 mm) and fine (<1.18 mm) particles; heifers fed the Short diet selected against long particles and in favor of short and fine particles. Heifers fed the Medium diet showed a preference for medium particles with no preference for the other particle sizes. In Experiment 2, heifers fed the Dry diet tended to consume more feed than those fed the Moderate and Wet diets, with no differences in feeding behavior or sorting activity. In conclusion the Medium diet minimized sorting without reducing eating rates and intake, and adding water to TMR to achieve a dry matter less than 65% tended to decrease DMI without reducing sorting.  相似文献

In animals, chronic intake of diets with high proportions of rapidly absorbable glucose promotes the development of insulin resistance. High levels of glucose can produce permanent chemical alterations in proteins and lipid peroxidation. delta-Aminolevulinate dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) is a sulfhydryl-containing enzyme essential for all aerobic organisms and is highly sensitive to the presence of pro-oxidants elements. The heme synthetic pathway is impaired in porphyria and a frequent coexistence of diabetes mellitus and porphyria disease has been reported in humans and experimental animal models, which can be casually linked to the delta-ALA-D inhibition found in diabetics. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of two different diets, a high glucose (HG) diet and a high starch (HS) diet, on lipid peroxidation levels in different tissues (brain, liver, and kidney) and on delta-ALA-D activity (from liver and kidney) in mice. Plasma glucose and triglyceride levels were significantly higher in mice fed HG than in mice fed HS (P < 0.02 and P < 0.03, respectively). Thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBA-RS) content was significantly increased in kidney and liver from HG diet-fed mice when compared with animals fed HS diets (P < 0.001). Hepatic delta-ALA-D activity of HG diet-fed animals was significantly lower than that of HS diet-fed animals (P < 0.01). The results of this study support the hypothesis that consumption of a diet with high free glucose can promote the development of oxidative stress that we tentatively attribute to hyperglycemia.  相似文献

Rats were fed diets containing a high level of saturated fatty acids (hydrogenated beef tallow) versus a high level of linoleic acid (safflower oil) at both low and high levels of fish oil containing 7.5% (w/w) eicosapentaenoic and 2.5% (w/w) docosahexaenoic acids for a period of 28 days. The effect of feeding these diets on the cholesterol content and fatty acid composition of serum and liver lipids was examined. Feeding diets high in fish oil with safflower oil decreased the cholesterol content of rat serum, whereas feeding fish oil had no significant effect on the cholesterol content of serum when fed in combination with saturated fatty acids. The serum cholesterol level was higher in animals fed safflower oil compared to animals fed saturated fat without fish oil. Consumption of fish oil lowered the cholesterol content of liver tissue regardless of the dietary fat fed. Feeding diets containing fish oil reduced the arachidonic acid content of rat serum and liver lipid fractions, the decrease being more pronounced when fish oil was fed in combination with hydrogenated beef tallow than with safflower oil. These results suggest that dietary n-3 fatty acids of fish oil interact with dietary linoleic acid and saturated fatty acids differently to modulate enzymes of cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to study the effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on abdominal fat pad weight and chemical composition of broilers. In Experiment 1, different fat sources were blended in different ratios keeping added fat level constant (9%). In Experiment 2, PUFA gradient was obtained by increasing the level of inclusion (2, 4, 6 and 8%) of PUFA-rich oil. The treatments had 15, 34, 45 and 61 and 28, 38, 48 and 59 g PUFA/kg diet, respectively. Apparent metabolizable energy intake was similar in both experiments, except for the more saturated diet in Experiment 1 (15 g PUFA/kg), where it was lower. In Experiment 1, abdominal fat pad weight, total body fat and body energy were lower in the animals on the high PUFA diets (p < 0.05) compared to the animals on the saturated-rich ones, meanwhile in Experiment 2 there were no differences on chemical and energy composition by increasing added PUFA-rich oil inclusion level. In conclusion, PUFA-rich chicken diets, compared to saturated-rich ones, cause a lower body fat deposition, but not compared to low-PUFA low-fat diets.  相似文献
