Theory predicts that forces of natural selection can reduce the intensity of sexually selected traits. In this study, I investigate how morphological adaptation to feeding ecology influences a mating signal. In birds, changes in feeding ecology can cause rapid divergence in bill morphology. Because bills are also important for song production, feeding ecology may influence song divergence. During song, birds can rapidly change vocal tract resonance using bill movement, yet are constrained in rate and magnitude of bill movements resulting in a trade-off between trill rate and frequency bandwidth. Male swamp sparrows vary in their ability to produce rapid, broad-band trills and females prefer more physically demanding songs. Populations of swamp sparrows adapted to the feeding ecology of tidal marshes have larger bills than inland populations. Larger bills should increase the constraints of producing rapid, broad-band trills allowing for a test of how changes in feeding ecology affect a feature of song used in mate choice. I found significant differences in acoustic features of song consistent with the hypothesis that coastal males are less able to meet the physical demands of song production because of the constraints of having larger bills. As possible compensation for decreases in song performance, coastal populations exhibit an increase in song complexity. These changes support the current model of how motor constraints influence song production and suggest a mechanism by which feeding ecology can influence signal evolution.  相似文献

Physically challenging signals are likely to honestly indicate signaler quality. In trilled bird song two physically challenging parameters are vocal deviation (the speed of sound frequency modulation) and trill consistency (how precisely syllables are repeated). As predicted, in several species, they correlate with male quality, are preferred by females, and/or function in male-male signaling. Species may experience different selective pressures on their songs, however; for instance, there may be opposing selection between song complexity and song performance difficulty, such that in species where song complexity is strongly selected, there may not be strong selection on performance-based traits. I tested whether vocal deviation and trill consistency are signals of male quality in house wrens (Troglodytes aedon), a species with complex song structure. Males’ singing ability did not correlate with male quality, except that older males sang with higher trill consistency, and males with more consistent trills responded more aggressively to playback (although a previous study found no effect of stimulus trill consistency on males’ responses to playback). Males singing more challenging songs did not gain in polygyny, extra-pair paternity, or annual reproductive success. Moreover, none of the standard male quality measures I investigated correlated with mating or reproductive success. I conclude that vocal deviation and trill consistency do not signal male quality in this species.  相似文献

In a variety of songbirds the production of trilled song elements is constrained by a performance tradeoff between how fast a bird can repeat trill units (trill rate) and the range of frequencies each unit can span (frequency bandwidth). High-performance trills serve as an assessment signal for females, but little is known about the signal value of vocal performance for male receivers. We investigated the relationship between trill rate and frequency bandwidth in banded wren (Thryothorus pleurostictus) songs. Trilled song elements showed the same performance tradeoff found in other passerines and individuals differed in performance of some trill types. We tested the hypothesis that males of this species assess each other based on trill performance with a two-speaker experiment, in which territory owners were presented with alternating renditions of the same song type manipulated to differ in trill rate. Subjects were significantly more likely to approach the faster trill stimulus first. However, subjects that received trill types closer to the performance limit spent less time close to the fast speaker. Our results show that male banded wrens discriminate and respond differently to songs based on their vocal performance. Thus, performance of physically challenging songs may be important in intra- as well as inter-sexual assessment.  相似文献

Animal mating signals evolve in part through indirect natural selection on anatomical traits that influence signal expression. In songbirds, for example, natural selection on beak form and function can influence the evolution of song features, because of the role of the beak in song production. In this study we characterize the relationship between beak morphology and song features within a bimodal population of Geospiza fortis on Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos. This is the only extant population of Darwin's finches that is known to possess a bimodal distribution in beak size. We test the hypothesis that birds with larger beaks are constrained to produce songs with lower frequencies and decreased vocal performance. We find that birds with longer, deeper, and wider beaks produce songs with significantly lower minimum frequencies, maximum frequencies and frequency bandwidths. Results from the analysis of the relationship between beak morphology and trill rate are mixed. Measures of beak morphology correlated positively with 'vocal deviation', a composite index of vocal performance. Overall these results support a resonance model of vocal tract function, and suggest that beak morphology, a primary target of ecological selection in Darwin's finches, affects the evolution of mating signals. We suggest that differences in song between the two modes of the distribution may influence mate recognition and perhaps facilitate assortative mating by beak size and population divergence.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 489–498.  相似文献

Female songbirds are thought to assess males based on aspectsof song, such as repertoire size or amount of singing, thatcould potentially provide information about male quality. Arelatively unexplored aspect of song that also might serve asan assessment signal is a male's ability to perform physicallychallenging songs. Trilled songs, such as those produced byswamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana), present males with a performancechallenge because trills require rapid and precise coordinationof vocal tract movements, resulting in a trade-off between trillrate and frequency bandwidth. This trade-off defines a constrainton song production observed as a triangular distribution inacoustic space of trill rate by frequency bandwidth, with anupper boundary that represents a performance limit. Given thisbackground on song production constraints, we are able to identifya priori which songs are performed with a higher degree of proficiencyand, thus, which songs should be more attractive to females.We determined the performance limit for a population of swampsparrows and measured how well individual males performed songsrelative to this limit ("vocal performance"). We then comparedfemale solicitation responses to high-performance versus low-performanceversions of the same song type produced by different males.Females displayed significantly more to high-performance songsthan to low-performance songs, supporting the hypothesis thatfemales use vocal performance to assess males.  相似文献

Bird song functions in mate choice and species recognition, and hence variation in song can contribute to divergence and reproductive isolation. We used playback experiments to examine male response to conspecific song in Darwin’s small tree finch. Song is a reliable signal of bill morphology in this species, and individuals displayed stronger response to songs of males with similar bill size. These findings suggest that, in the context of territorial defence, males discriminate between intruders on the basis of song characteristics. Given that male response to song may be examined as a proxy for female response, this study also implies that females could discriminate between males on the basis of song. The findings suggest that: (1) perceived threat of intruders is related to reproductive competition and not fighting assessment, and (2) geographical isolation is not required for biologically meaningful song variation in Darwin’s finches.  相似文献

Physical constraints on animal signals can have important consequences for communication. For bird songs that include a trill, performance is physically constrained by a trade-off between the rate at which notes are repeated in the trill and the sound frequency range covered, such that a trill cannot exceed a certain frequency range for a given note repetition rate. Producing trills that are closer to this performance limit is presumably more challenging for birds than producing trills that are farther from it. Male red-winged blackbirds Ageliaus phoeniceus have repertoires of two to eight song types containing trills that span a range of performance levels. We determined the approximate trill performance maximum for a population of red-winged blackbirds, then conducted playback experiments to measure the responses of territorial males to song types with either high or low performance levels relative to this limit. Males responded significantly more strongly to songs containing low performance trills. Our results show that male red-winged blackbirds can discriminate between different song performance levels, suggesting that vocal proficiency plays a role in male-male interactions.  相似文献

The elaborateness of many bird songs is commonly presumed tohave evolved under the influence of sexual selection by femalemate choice. Thus, aspects of acoustic diversity, such as songrepertoire size, are seen as likely targets of female choice.In many songbird species with song repertoires, however, therepertoires are small. In such species, female choice mightbe based on song features other than, or in addition to, songdiversity. To investigate this conjecture, I assessed singingand paternity in a population of chestnut-sided warblers (Dendroicapensylvanica), a species in which song repertoires are of modestsize. Twenty-two song traits were evaluated to determine whichones best predicted male extrapair reproductive success. Thecandidate traits encompassed measures of song diversity (e.g.,song repertoire size), gross-scale song performance (e.g., singingrate), and fine-scale song performance (e.g., variability amongsongs in a bout). Regression analysis revealed that the bestpredictor of extrapair success was singing with little variability.In particular, the most successful males sang with consistentpitch and timing, as well as high pitch. The greater extrapairsuccess of males with more consistent vocal performance maybe due to female preference for such performance, which couldbe an indicator of male quality.  相似文献

Behavioral evolution can be influenced by constraints, for example, of phylogeny and performance. In this paper I describe a pattern in the evolution of birdsongs that may reflect a constraint on vocal performance. Trilled vocalizations from 34 species of songbirds (Passeriformes: Emberizidae) were analyzed. Two acoustic variables, trill rate and frequency bandwidth, were measured for different trill types. In most species, maximal values of frequency bandwidth were found to decrease with increasing trill rates. Further, trills with low trill rates exhibited wide variance in frequency bandwidth, and trills with high trill rates exhibited only narrow frequency bandwidths. The bounded nature of this pattern suggests that performance constraints have limited the evolutionary diversification of trills. In particular, I explore the role of constraints associated with vocal tract modulations during song production and evolution. Identification of this constraint may enhance our ability to explain particular patterns of trill evolution.  相似文献

Transmitting information about singer's quality is an important function of song in many bird species, and this information should be useful in territorial interactions. Fast trills, being physically demanding song structures, are particularly suitable candidates for signalling of quality or aggressive motivation. We have evaluated trill characteristics in songs within a population of the Tree Pipit, a common European songbird with no sexual dimorphism, in which song apparently plays a key role in territory defence as well as mate choice. Two types of relatively fast trills (each of them in multiple variants differing in complexity) were commonly observed in repertoires of Tree Pipit males. Trill rates significantly differed among individuals, suggesting that these song structures may carry information about male quality in this species. We tested by playback experiments whether both trill types are used in territorial encounters. Only one of the trill types was sung by males in response to playback, regardless on the trill type played to them. In an immediate response to playback, they increased the frequency of use of this trill, and also significantly increased the trill rate in comparison with spontaneous songs. This confirmed field observations, suggesting that this trill is important in male–male interactions. On the contrary, the use of the fastest, apparently more demanding, trill type actually decreased after the simulated territorial intrusion. We hypothesize that the latter one is more directed towards females, and that while performance of both trill types may reflect male quality, they are primarily used in different contexts.  相似文献

Introduction

Urbanization can considerably impact animal ecology, evolution, and behavior. Among the new conditions that animals experience in cities is anthropogenic noise, which can limit the sound space available for animals to communicate using acoustic signals. Some urban bird species increase their song frequencies so that they can be heard above low-frequency background city noise. However, the ability to make such song modifications may be constrained by several morphological factors, including bill gape, size, and shape, thereby limiting the degree to which certain species can vocally adapt to urban settings. We examined the relationship between song characteristics and bill morphology in a species (the house finch, Haemorhous mexicanus) where both vocal performance and bill size are known to differ between city and rural animals.

Results

We found that bills were longer and narrower in more disturbed, urban areas. We observed an increase in minimum song frequency of urban birds, and we also found that the upper frequency limit of songs decreased in direct relation to bill morphology.

Conclusions

These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that birds with longer beaks and therefore longer vocal tracts sing songs with lower maximum frequencies because longer tubes have lower-frequency resonances. Thus, for the first time, we reveal dual constraints (one biotic, one abiotic) on the song frequency range of urban animals. Urban foraging pressures may additionally interact with the acoustic environment to shape bill traits and vocal performance.

Birdsong functions as both a territorial and a mate-attracting signal, and is therefore subject to inter- and intrasexual selection through male-male competition and female mate choice. Consequently, differences in song perception between males and females could potentially lead to conflicting selection pressures on song structure. Chaffinch,Fringilla coelebs , songs have two distinctive parts: a series of rapidly repeated notes (the trill) followed by a sequence of more complex and often nonrepeated elements (the flourish). Males often spontaneously sing incomplete songs consisting mainly of the trill part, but their communicative function is unclear. We tested the reaction of males to songs with and without the terminal flourish in a dual speaker playback design by measuring their approach to the speakers. Like female chaffinches tested with the same stimuli in a previous study, males responded more to songs with both trill and flourish than to those consisting of a trill only. However, although females had preferred songs with a relatively longer flourish, males showed the strongest reaction (closest approach to the speaker) to songs with longer trills and shorter flourishes. The results suggest that males and females may perceive aspects of chaffinch song structure differently, in which case it could be under conflicting pressure of intra- and intersexual selection. Some of nature’s most complex behaviors, such as human speech and oscine bird song, are acquired through imitative learning. Accurate imitative learning tends to preserve patterns of behavior across generations, thus limiting the scope of cultural evolution. Less well studied are the routes by which cultural novelties arise during development, beyond simple copy error. In this study we assess, in a species of songbird, the relationship in song learning between two potentially conflicting learning goals: accuracy in copying and maximization of vocal performance. In our study species, the swamp sparrow (Melospiza georgiana), vocal performance can be defined for a given song type and frequency range by the rate of note repetition (‘trill rate’), with faster trills being more difficult to sing. We trained young swamp sparrows with song models with experimentally modified trill rates and characterized both the accuracy and performance levels of copies. Our main finding is that birds elevated the trill rates of low‐performance models, but at the expense of imitative accuracy. By contrast, birds reproduced normal and high‐performance models with typically high accuracy in structure and timing. Developmental mechanisms that enable songbirds to balance imitative accuracy and vocal performance are likely favored by sexual selection and may help explain some current patterns of variation in birdsong. Such mechanisms may also explain how behaviors that are learned by imitation can nevertheless respond to selection for high‐performance levels in their expression.  相似文献

Summary Phonotactic behavior was studied in male crickets,Teleogryllus oceanicus. Tethered flying males were presented with electronically synthesized calling song models in a two-choice phonotaxis assay, and their song preferences were determined and compared with previous findings for females.Males are poorer at discriminating between songs than females; they do not display choice behavior as frequently as females, and the choices they do make are not as consistent as those of females (Figs. 3, 4). T. oceanicus calling song is composed of rhythmically different chirp and trill sections. The selectivity of males for these two components differs from that of females. Females prefer chirp to trill, but the opposite is true for males (Fig. 5B-F). Males are similar to females in that they prefer either a conspecific song model or its separate components to a heterospecific model (Fig. 5A, G, H).Behavioral and neural implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

When pairing with high quality females, a male increases its fitness through an increased number and/or quality of sired offsprings. In anurans, size has often been used as a measure of female quality. In the present study, we examined the effects of pairing with large females for small males in the common toad, Bufo bufo . For the first time in anurans, we show a fitness cost for males to maintain amplexus with a large female. Indeed, although we did not detect any effect of male size on male pairing success in a first breeding event in the presence of other competing males, when males that were successful in the first breeding event were tested for a second time, male pairing success strongly decreased when they had been first paired with a large female. However, the higher fecundity of large females (1.52-fold more than that of small females) may override this pairing cost, especially because high fertilization rate was not linked to male/female body size ratio. Indeed, we did not detect any difference in egg fertilization success between small males paired with large and small females. Our results suggest that predictable cues of female reproductive value exist in common toads, thus meeting a prerequisite of the occurrence of male mate choice. The calling song of male crickets, including Oecanthus nigricornis (Walker), attracts females for mating and provides a model system of sexual communication. We give the first conclusive identification of a feature of cricket song that is both attractive to females and indicates a phenotypic feature (body size) that determines male mating success and female reproductive benefits. We do this by first testing for correlations between song characteristics and aspects of male phenotype that are hypothesized to indicate male quality. We show that song is a reliable indicator of male size and male age, and that large male size is associated with increased female fecundity. We then use playbacks of synthetic songs that mimic natural variation in song parameters to study song preferences and we compare preferences under different presentation regimes to determine whether choices are based on relative song quality or some fixed criterion. Females show a preference for the lower frequency songs produced by large males, but only during simultaneous playbacks. Thus female choice is based on the relative quality of calls that can be sampled simultaneously. These results provide strong support for the hypothesis that females use variation in calling song to assess male mate quality.  相似文献

Recent studies of the vocal mechanisms of songbirds have shown that there are physical effects on sound production. Interspecific and phylogenetic comparisons have shown that body mass and bill morphology are two major factors affecting vocalizations such as songs. We analyzed the distance calls of female Bengalese finches Lonchura striata var. domestica , the non-vocal learning sex, to assess the potential physical effects on the acoustic structure of vocalizations. By experimentally controlling rearing condition using cross-fostering we could examine the effects of the developmental environment and genetic background. None of the tested factors affected the peak frequency of the distance calls, but we found that larger-billed birds tended to produce shorter bout calls with higher trill rates. These results suggest that the divergence of bill morphology can affect acoustic features at the within-population level. We also found that the birds reared in the same foster brood and siblings from the same genetic parents tended to produce calls with similar trill rates. This implies that the trill rate is under the influence of developmental and genetic factors.  相似文献

In songbirds, there is considerable interest in relationships between song structure and the size of the song control system in the forebrain. In male canaries, earlier studies have reported that repertoire size increased with age, and positive correlations were obtained between repertoire size and the volume of song control nuclei such as high vocal center (HVC). Here we investigate whether age has an effect upon both the song structure and the morphology of two song control nuclei [HVC and robustus archistriatalis (RA)] that are important in song production. We recorded songs from an aviary population of 1- and 2-year-old male domesticated canaries. We found that repertoire size, number of sexually attractive (sexy) syllables, and size of song nuclei did not differ between 1- and 2-year-old males. Neither did we find significant correlations between syllable repertoire size and the size of the song control nuclei. However, HVC size was positively correlated with the proportion of sexy syllables in the repertoires of 2-year-old males. Some older males may enhance vocal performance by modifying the control of syllables rather than by increasing repertoire size or neural space.  相似文献

Motor constraints on vocal production impose a trade-off between trill rate and frequency bandwidth within birdsong. We tested whether domesticated canary (Serinus canaria) females, reared either in acoustic isolation or in aviary conditions, had a preference for broad bandwidth songs with artificially increased syllable rates. The copulation solicitation display (CSD) was used as an index of female preference. As predicted, both naive and experienced females were especially responsive to syllables with a broad bandwidth emitted at an artificially increased rate. Female preference for supernormal stimuli provide support for the honest-signalling hypothesis and our results are consistent with recent findings indicating that production of song phrases maximizing both bandwidth and syllable rate may be a reliable indicator of male physical or behavioural qualities. We suggest that female preference for vocal emissions, which simultaneously maximize these two parameters, could be a widespread pattern within songbirds.  相似文献
