This study examined the relationship between otolith size and growth in juvenile cod (Gadus morhua L.). Two groups of juvenile cod were reared under different food ration and temperature regimes to obtain fish of similar somatic size but with different sized otoliths. The two groups were subjected to alternating temperature regimes and intermediate ration levels. Large otoliths grew significantly faster than the small ones and variation between individuals was extensive. The ratio of otolith growth during cold and warm temperature exposure did not differ between groups, and the observed growth pattern is therefore not attributable to differential growth within individual temperature periods. The ratio decreased with otolith size, presumably as a result of ontogenetic decrease in otolith protein composition. These results suggest that processes coupled to the metabolic rate of the endolymphatic epithelium are the key driver behind otolith growth.  相似文献

Elemental compositions of otoliths of young-of-the-year Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus at stations along a pollution gradient in Galveston Bay, Texas, were compared with those of sediments and livers to establish the level of consonance between otolith and habitat chemistries. Both coupled and uncoupled trends were indicated, with the bulk of the results pointing to the need for additional research to test the working hypothesis that the otolith stores a temporal record of elemental chemistry of resident waters. Lack of simple correlations between elemental concentrations in sediment or liver and in otoliths indicate that other biological and geochemical factors influence otolith composition.  相似文献

Otolith morphology is an efficient tool for the discrimination of fish stocks, populations and species when comparative genetic data are not available. Currently, the relationship between environmental factors and otolith shape is poorly characterized for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a highly migratory catadromous species constituting a single, randomly mating stock. The present study analyses the differences in otolith morphology between three Mediterranean eel local stocks from different environmental contexts (i.e. two brackish lagoons and one river). The relationship between otolith shape and otolith size was studied by means of Elliptic Fourier analysis and multivariate statistics. Otolith profile was digitally acquired and Cartesian coordinates were extracted. Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis pointed to continuous allometric growth in size and shape in otoliths from all three sites. In the three environments, shape variations occurred during growth as indicated by the presence of a significant and positive relationship between otolith size and the first PLS latent vector (i.e. which bears most of the information regarding otolith outline). Differences between smaller and larger sized otoliths were investigated using PLS Discriminant Analysis (PLSDA) and cluster analysis. Results indicate that otolith shape is highly uniform at smaller than at larger sizes. These shape differences apparently overlap the initial differentiation of the small otolith outlines acquired by eels during the growing phase as elvers in the marine environment. Data were discussed considering that the physical and chemical habitat variability in brackish lagoons and river could underlie a marked change in otolith shape during the animals' growth.  相似文献

In protogynous sex-changing fishes, females are expected to compete for the opportunity to change sex following the loss of a dominant male and may exhibit growth and behavioural traits that help them maintain their dominant status after sex change. A male removal experiment was used to examine changes in female growth and behaviour associated with sex change in the haremic wrasse Halichoeres miniatus and to test whether any changes in growth associated with sex change were recorded in otolith microstructure. Dominant females began displaying male-characteristic behaviour almost immediately after the harem male was removed. The frequency of interactions between females increased following male removal. In contrast, feeding frequency of females decreased. The largest one to three females in each social group changed sex following male removal and exhibited an increase in growth associated with sex change. Sex changers grew more than twice as fast as non-sex changers during the experimental period. This growth acceleration may enable new sex-changed males to rapidly reach a size where they can defend the remaining harem from other males. An optical discontinuity (check mark) was present in the otoliths of sex-changed fish, and otolith accretion rate increased significantly after the check mark, corresponding with the increased growth rate of sex-changing females. Wild caught males, but not females, exhibited an analogous check mark in their otoliths and similar increases in otolith increment widths after the check. This indicates that an increase in growth rate is a regular feature of sex-change dynamics of H. miniatus. Communicated by Environment Editor Prof. Rob van Woesik  相似文献

The relationships between somatic growth and otolith dimensions, otolith size to estimated age and growth parameters of the tigertooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) were investigated in 100 specimens (size range: 19.1–52.0 cm, total length) from the Oman Sea area, September 2014. All 100 otoliths were sectioned and determined by age. The oldest specimen was a 4.5‐year‐old female with a total length of 40.6 cm; the youngest specimen was also a female estimated at 1 year of age with a total length of 19.1 cm. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was estimated as Lt = 54.70 (1 ? exp (?0.37 (t + 0.21))). Concluded was that there is a significant relationship between body size, otolith dimensions and estimated age of Otolithes ruber.  相似文献

The fish otolith consists mainly of calcium carbonate and organic matrices, the latter of which may play important roles in the process of otolith formation. We previously identified two otolith matrix proteins, named otolith matrix protein-1 (OMP-1) and otolin-1, from the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and the chum salmon, O. keta. In this study, recombinant proteins corresponding to OMP-1 and otolin-1 were synthesized using yeast and bacterial expression systems, respectively, to produce specific antibodies against each protein. Immunohistochemical analysis using these antisera revealed that in the otoliths of adult fish, OMP-1 and otolin-1 were colocalized along the daily rings possibly formed by alternate deposition of calcium carbonate and organic matrices. In the adult inner ear, OMP-1 was produced at most of the saccular epithelium, while otolin-1 was produced at a limited part of cylindrical cells located at the marginal zone of the sensory epithelium. In the embryonic inner ear, these proteins had already existed in the otolith primordia when calcification had commenced. In addition, otolin-1 was localized in the fibrous materials connecting otolith primordia and sensory epithelium at this stage. These results indicate that these proteins are required as essential components for otolith formation and calcification.  相似文献

The biology and the behaviour of fish populations in hypersaline environments are poorly known. The habitat occupation strategy of the tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron has been studied along a salinity gradient in the Saloum hypersaline estuary in Senegal (salinity between 32 and 100). The individual migratory behaviour has been analysed from otolith strontium-to-calcium concentration ratios from fish sampled in five locations during the 2003 wet season and the 2004 dry season. In the upper part of the estuary (salinities > 50), the Sr:Ca ratio in the otolith showed high variations, from 2.51 to 33.30 × 10−3. These maximum observed values have never been reported in the literature. The individual mean of Sr:Ca ratios increased according to the salinity gradient in the estuary, with significantly higher values in the upper part (Sr:Ca mean = 16 × 10−3) than in the lower part (salinity < 50, Sr:Ca mean = 12 × 10−3). No significant difference in the Sr:Ca mean was observed between locations with comparable salinities. Sr concentration in the water at the different locations was positively correlated with ambient salinity. The mean of Sr:Ca in the otoliths was then in relationship with the level of Sr in the water. Thus, the Sr:Ca ratios in the otolith of S. melanotheron allowed to discriminate the populations of this species and to hypothesize that they did not undertake large scale movements within the estuary.  相似文献

The morphology and morphometrics of the sagittal otoliths of small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) from the southern Yellow Sea were investigated. Study objectives were to evaluate the shape variability and morphometric variables of sagittae of juveniles and adults as related to developmental changes and habit shift. A total of 152 fish were sampled from April to June of 2012 and 2013, along the coastal waters of the Lüsi spawning ground in the southern Yellow Sea. Changes in otolith shapes from the juvenile to the adult were presented with the rim development through the entire‐lobed‐entire transition and with the curvature of the cauda toward the ventral margin. The otolith elongation in the juvenile stage occurred at 10–20 mm standard length (SL) and was likely associated with the formation of otolith accessory growth centers from larvae to juvenile. The L. polyactis sagittal otoliths acquired their definitive shape at 130 mm SL maturity. Ontogeny on otolith shape might be related, for example, to the factors of metamorphic development, feeding habitat, and ambient water salinity, which varied throughout the growth of L. polyactis.  相似文献

Morphology and morphometry of the sagittae otolith were studied in young of the year Argentine hake, Merluccius hubbsi in the Southeastern Atlantic. Geographical variation in the growth pattern of the young of the year Merluccius hubbsi was correlated with the differences found in otolith morphometry, relative growth, ring positions, as well as the formation of a new ring. The otolith development of M. hubbsi throughout its area of distribution accompanies an increasing northward temperature gradient, resulting in bigger otoliths and greater variability of ring position from northern to southern area. The canonical discriminate analysis showed that the otolith length and height explained most of the variation of the first discriminant function. We found significant differences in the discriminant scores between those samples from northern and southern area. As regards the Uruguayan coast and Southern Brazil, age groups zero shared some similarity as well as differences in growth; environmental features explain these differences but their effect on the adult fishes growth is still unknown.  相似文献

Synopsis The relation between the feeding and mortality of fish larvae is mediated not only by starvation but also by their growth. In this work, daily otolith ring deposition was analysed in laboratory-reared larvae of Odontesthes microlepidotus (Jenyns), and their growth was studied in relation to ring number and otolith diameter. The nutritional condition of these larvae was assessed by means of morphometric comparisons between fed and starved larvae in order to develop a tool to evaluate the nutritional status of larvae in breeding areas. Changes in body shape have been found as a consequence of starvation. No dependence was found between mean hepatocyte nuclear area and fasting.  相似文献

Synopsis Very little is known about the dynamics of native Hawaiian stream fishes. Five species are restricted, as adults, to freshwater streams and estuaries on the major islands of the Hawaiian archipelago. This paucity of information is partly due to difficulties inherent in determination of age and subsequent determinations of life history characteristics. In the present study, we determined the age of newly recruited Hawaiian gobies,Stenogobius genivittatus andAwaous stamineus using otolith microtechniques. Internal otolith increments were enumerated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Increments of newly recruited juveniles were deposited on a daily basis as validated through a marking study. Results showed recruitment at an average age of 135 and 161 days for these two species, respectively, with more rapid growth following recruitment to freshwater. Chemical analyses of otolith carbonate of the Hawaiian gobies by electron microprobe for strontium and calcium concentrations provided valuable insights into a fish's past history. A combination of structural and chemical analyses makes it possible to link growth and recruitment to nutritional and environmental factors. Such information developed as a broad model would be applicable to the management of Hawaiian gobies and would greatly improve the quality of information available for these unique fish populations and other fish populations  相似文献

The use of morphological characters and otolith weight as predictors of fish age has proven to be an efficient, objective and precise method, but studies were heretofore focused primarily on fast‐growing fish species. In the present study, Belanger's croaker, Johnius belangerii (Cuvier, 1830), is presented as a model species for slow‐growing fish where it is hypothesized that age has a significant effect on the otolith shape, and that the otolith weight has the potential to predict individual fish age as an alternative and objective method. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) of shape variables and cross‐validation were applied to a total of 359 sagittal otoliths in the age groups 0, 1 and 2. The shape variables demonstrated 64.1% correct age classification, and a 93.5% correct age classification with the inclusion of otolith weight in the discriminant function. Results show that a combination of shape variables and otolith weight work well in age determination of Belanger's croaker, and demonstrate its application potential for sciaenids that are distributed throughout the coastal waters of China.  相似文献

Otoliths were removed from field-collected silversides of age less than 3 months. Otolith diameter was highly correlated with total length of the fish. Daily growth ring counts for this species are known to be a function of age rather than size, so widths for the daily growth rings provide a record of daily increases in length of the fish. Measurement of ring widths showed that weekly specific growth rate was greater than 70% at age 1 week, but declined to about 30% at age 1 month and about 15% at age 2 months. A laboratory experiment in which temperature was changed on a weekly basis demonstrated that environmental variables can affect the width of rings. Nevertheless, the growth rate of field-collected fish, as calculated from otolith ring widths, was more highly correlated with size of fish, as measured by otolith radius, than with the environmental variables of temperature, salinity and plankton abundance. Back-calculation of growth rates from otolith ring widths of five fish collected at the end of the growing season yielded the same age-growth curves as were obtained from 203 fish collected biweekly during the season.  相似文献

The relationships among microhabitat use, food habits, conspecific density and recent growth rate for estuarine-dependent juvenile spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, and red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, were studied to determine how nursery habitat influences early growth. Juvenile spotted seatrout and red drum were quantified along the marsh-edge ecotone from multiple drop samples, and their immediate environments characterized by a suite of physical and chemical variables along with substrate type and Spartina stem density. Recent daily growth of individual fish was modeled in a series of multiple regression analyses that considered the relative contributions of food, microhabitat, and conspecific density. The spotted seatrout model (p < 0.0001) included four independent variables, otolith radius, prey diversity, salinity, and a salinity-DO interaction term, and explained 67.9% of the variation in daily growth. All variables were significant (p < 0.05), and regression slopes were positive for all variables except salinity. The red drum model (p > 0.0001) included five independent variables, otolith radius, temperature, salinity, depth and substrate, and explained 63.3% of the variation in daily growth. All variables were significant (p > 0.05), and all regression slopes were positive. Fish size (as estimated by otolith radius) accounted for most of the variance in the spotted seatrout (60.2%) and red drum (44.8%) models, while the remaining environmental variables were significant and responsible for 7.7 and 18.5%, respectively. Density variables were not selected for either model, suggesting that density-dependence was not an important influence on recent daily growth. Generally, physico-chemical variables such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen contributed more to growth than diet or extrinsic factors such as grass stem density.  相似文献

Summary Scanning electron microscopy revealed two types of hair cells in the sacculus of an amphibian, the mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus). Both types were surrounded by microvilli-covered sustentacular cells. The peripheral hair cells have shorter, thinner stereocilia and longer kinocilia than the hair cells in the central macula. The hair cells generally were found to be oriented with their stereocilia gradient directed toward the periphery of the macula. A nearly semicircular stria separated those directed forward and outward from those directed rearward and outward. Two basic types of otoconia were found in the otolith, and X-ray analysis revealed the entire otolith to be composed of aragonite.We would like to thank Dean E. Effects of water temperature, starvation and photoperiod on otolith increment formation in larval Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus, were examined in this study. The results demonstrated that otolith increments of larvae reared under diel temperature fluctuations were very clear and appeared with a high contrast, while those of larvae raised under constant water temperatures were vague or hard to identify. The increment deposition rates were less than 1.0/day in later stage of starvation period. Also, increment deposition was affected by cyclic regimes of water temperature fluctuations, the number of increments corresponded to the cycle times rather than the exact days larvae experienced. However, varying of feeding frequency and photoperiod did not result in any alterations of daily increment formation. Increment width increased obviously with higher rearing temperatures till several days after yolk absorption. However, the width presented an ontogenetic decline during period of endogenous nutrition and the first several days of exogenous nutrition stage. Starvation decoupled the relationship between somatic growth and otolith growth; otolith kept growing, and increment width of starved larvae was similar to those in fed individuals before 9–20 days old; the divergence of increment width from the fed larvae occurred in later stage of starvation period. It can be concluded that temperature regimes and food levels are the major factors affecting increment formation in terms of clarity, deposition rate and width, while photoperiod and feeding frequency have less influence on it.  相似文献

Viewed by transmitted light, the lapillus and astericus otoliths Macruronus novaezelandiae (Merlucciidae) contain radial bands of similar width to the distances between steps on the surface of the otolith. The sagitta otolith has a multi-prismatic structure and shows differences in ultrastructure between its dorsal and ventral growth axes, as well as its sulcal (inward-facing) and anti-sulcal (outward-facing) parts. The ultrastructure of the sagitta shows that not all of the optical and etched checks in the central growth axis represent true discontinuities in the crystal growth of the otolith; they are the result of refraction around narrow optically active refractive bands. Microincrement growth along the dorsal prisms of the otolith from the primordium to the growing edge shows discontinuities in crystal growth at the boundary of the primordium and at the intersection of prisms. Parts of the ventral edge of the otolith show discontinuous crystal growth apparently caused by the physical growth restriction at the point at which the otolith is supported by the skull. Both the anti-sulcal and sulcal parts of the otolith often show discontinuities in the crystal structure alongside zones of continuous microincrement deposition, or evidence of continuous crystal growth, documenting simultaneous continuous and discontinuous growth in closely juxtaposed parts of the same otolith. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Habitat specific growth rates and condition indices were estimated for Solea solea and Solea senegalensis, in two nursery areas within the Tagus estuary, at the end of the estuarine colonization process, in 2005. While in the uppermost nursery area the two species of sole live in sympatry, in the lower nursery only S. senegalensis is present. Daily increments of left lapillar otoliths were used to estimate age (in days) and determine growth rates (mm per day). Condition indices were assessed through RNA‐DNA ratio in muscle samples. Growth rates were higher for S. senegalensis (0.970and 1.180 mm per day in nursery A and B, respectively) than for S. solea (0.767 mm per day in nursery A). Growth rates of S. senegalensis from the uppermost nursery area were lower when compared to those obtained for the other nursery. The RNA/DNA condition index followed the general trend given by the growth rate estimates, i.e. values were higher for S. senegalensis than for S. solea. However, no significant differences were detected in S. senegalensis from the two nurseries. Larger variations in salinity (10‰ amplitude in the uppermost nursery vs 0.2‰ in the lower nursery) and highest pollution loads may be important factors lowering the habitat quality of the uppermost nursery in comparison to the lower nursery. The use of growth rate estimates based on otolith readings and the RNA/DNA index as tools for habitat quality assessment was discussed.  相似文献

Daily increment validation in fish otolith is fundamental to studies on fish otolith microstructure, age determination and life history traits, and thus is critical for species conservation and fishery management. However, it has never been done for Schizothoracine fish, which is the dominant component of fish fauna in the Tibetan Plateau. This study validated the daily increment formation of Gymnocypris selincuoensis, as a representative of Schizothoracine fish, by monitoring the growth of hatchery‐reared larvae group and wild‐caught post‐yolk‐sac larvae group under controlled experiments. The results from monitoring the hatchery‐reared larvae group showed that sagittae and lapilli were found in yolk‐sac larvae, and formed 5–7 days before hatching, but asterisci were not found until 11 days post‐hatching. The first increment in sagittae and lapilli was formed in the first day after hatching. The daily periodicity of increment formation was examined and confirmed in sagittae and lapilli of both larvae groups. However, sagittae were better for age determination than lapilli for larvae at earlier days. For larval G. selincuoensis older than 50 days, lapilli were the only otolith pair suitable for larvae daily age determination. This study validated the daily increment formation in Schizothoracine fish for the first time has primary implications to other fishes from this subfamily.  相似文献
