A field experiment was conducted at an intertidal mudflat in SE England to investigate processes affecting the development of meiobenthic nematode assemblages in response to the placement of different types of sediment, simulating the deposition of fine-grained maintenance dredged material for habitat creation. Natural assemblages were exposed to different types of substrate, including sediment with natural sand and organic content (defaunated control), sediment with elevated sand content (high sand content treatment) and sediment with elevated organic content (high organic content treatment) for a period of 12 months. Differences between colonising assemblages and those from ambient control sediment in terms of total nematode abundance, taxonomic membership (i.e. number of species, species composition) and size (i.e. total biomass, biomass size spectra) were most marked in the plots with elevated organic content. Nematode density, number of species and total biomass in the defaunated control and high sand content treatment came to resemble those in the ambient control sediment after 3 months. In the organically enriched sediment, values only attained background level at the end of the experiment. Multivariate analyses revealed that, although assemblage structure in all treatments, and in particular the defaunated control and the high sand content treatment, became increasingly similar to the ambient sediment over time, recovery to ambient condition had not occurred 1 year after the set-up of the experiment.  相似文献

The use of the artificial defaunation of sediments is widespread among studies examining the disturbance and recovery of benthic macrofaunal communities. Standard methods of defaunation include driving the sediment to anoxia, freezing and sieving. In this study we performed a field experiment to test the assumption that the bacterial assemblages are unaffected by these methods of defaunation. Same-sized patches of sediment were defaunated by covering sediment with plastic sheeting (weighted by concrete blocks), freezing or sieving (1-mm mesh). Macrofaunal counts of sediment cores, taken to determine the effectiveness of each defaunation method, indicated that although none of the treatments removed 100% of macrofauna, all resulted in reduced macrofaunal presence, with the sieved treatment being the most effective. Bacterial samples were taken over the course of a month to determine both the initial and long-term effects of defaunation on bacterial community structure. Numerical effects were determined via epifluorescence microscopy, whereas differences in community composition were followed using PCR and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The anoxic treatments resulted in significant numerical changes in both active and total cell counts over time, while the frozen and sieved treatments caused less apparent changes. All of the treatments initially changed the composition of the community; however, anoxic and sieved treatments resulted in subtle changes while the frozen treatment produced more notable and variable changes within the community. The composition of the bacterial community in all of the treatment plots trended towards recovery, or convergence towards that of ambient sediments, by the t = 25-day sampling period.  相似文献

Two opposite distribution patterns of larval Glyptotendipes paripes in relation to organic carbon content in sediments of central Florida lakes were discovered. In a majority of examined lakes, G. paripes larvae were most abundant in sand sediment and their density rapidly declined with increased carbon content (type 1 lakes); however, in some cases the opposite was true (type 2 lakes). To elucidate this anomaly, field-collected organic sediments from types 1 and 2 lakes and sand sediment were studied for G. paripes development in the laboratory. Type 1 organic sediment consisted predominantly of fine particles (<0.25 mm diameter) with low dissolved oxygen levels, whereas type 2 organic sediments consisted primarily of chironomid large faecal pellet aggregates (>0.25 mm diameter), with significantly higher levels of dissolved oxygen concentrations that were similar to sand sediment. Type 2 organic sediment and sand sediment were conducive to higher survival of G. paripes larvae than fine organic sediment. The larvae in type 2 organic sediment produced longer tubes than in other sediment types. This observation indicates that accumulation of chironomid faecal pellets in lake sediments may change physical properties, such as dissolved oxygen level and consequently alter conditions for survival of chironomid larvae and possibly other benthic fauna.  相似文献

Wrack (dead, washed-up seaweed and seagrass) buried in soft substrata may increase the organic content and alter the physical structure of sediments. These effects may influence the composition and structure of macrofaunal assemblages in the sediment. Such influences can be expected to vary according to the type and amount of wrack as well as the presence of invasive seaweeds in the wrack. In this study, we deliberately buried different amounts of the invasive species Sargassum muticum in isolation or mixed to the native species Ulva sp. and Fucus vesiculosus, in two intertidal sandflats to test some hypotheses about the response of macrofaunal assemblages. We tested whether (1) diversity of detritus (i.e. different mixtures), and (2) the amount of detritus of S. muticum influenced the composition and the relative abundance of macrofaunal assemblages. We also assessed whether the sediment organic carbon and the biomass of benthic microalgae varied depending on the diversity of detritus and the amount of detritus of S. muticum. Finally, we tested if these effects of wrack were consistent across sites. Results indicated that buried wrack affected the composition and structure of macrofaunal assemblages in short-term (i.e. 4 weeks), but there were no differences depending on detritus diversity or the amount of S. muticum. In addition, sediment organic matter and microalgal biomass were not affected by the addition of wrack. They instead varied greatly among small spatial scales (i.e. plots). Wrack composition or abundance of the invasive species S. muticum played thus a small role in shaping the structure of macrofaunal assemblages or the biomass of benthic microalgae in these intertidal sediments, probably because these sediments are frequently affected by various inputs of organic matter and benthic assemblages are already adapted to organically enriched sediments.  相似文献

Rhizophora apiculata leaf litter decomposition and the influence of this process on phosphorus (P) dynamics were studied in mangrove and sand flat sediments at the Bangrong mangrove forest, Phuket, Thailand. The remaining P in the mangrove leaf litter increased with time of decomposition to 174% and 220% of the initial amount in the litter in sand flat and mangrove sediment, respectively, although about 50% of the dry weight had been lost. The incorporation of P into the litter was probably associated with humic acids and metal bridging, especially caused by iron (Fe), which also accumulated in considerable amounts in the litter (5-10 times initial concentration). The addition of leaves to the sediment caused increased concentrations of dissolved reactive phosphate (DRP) in the porewater, especially in sand flat sediment. The DRP probably originated from Fe-bound P in the sediment, because decomposition of buried leaf litter caused increased respiration and reduced the redox potential (Eh) in the sediments. Binding of P to refractory organic material and oxidized Fe at the sediment-water interface explains the low release of DRP from the sediment. This mechanism also explains the generally low DRP concentration in the mangrove porewater, the low nutrient content of the R. apiculata leaves, but also the higher total sediment P concentration of the mangrove sediment as compared to sediments outside the mangrove. Both the low release rates for DRP from the sediment and the accumulation of P associated with leaf litter decomposition tend to preserve P in the sediments.  相似文献

The continuous stream of sediments, dredged from harbors and waterways for keeping shipping traffic efficiency, is a considerable ongoing problem recognized worldwide. This problem gets worse as most of the sediments dredged from commercial ports and waterways turn out to be polluted by a wide range of organic and inorganic contaminants. In this study, phytoremediation was explored as a sustainable reclamation technology for turning slightly-polluted brackish dredged sediments into a matrix feasible for productive use. To test this possibility, a phytoremediation experimentation was carried out in containers of about 0.7 m3 each, filled with brackish dredged sediments contaminated by heavy metals and hydrocarbons. The sediments were pre-conditioned by adding an agronomic soil (30 % v/v) to improve their clayey granulometric composition, and by topping the mixture with high quality compost (4 kg m?2) to favour the initial adaptation of the selected vegetal species. The following plant treatments were tested: (1) Paspalum vaginatum, (2) Phragmites australis, (3) Spartium junceum + P. vaginatum, (4) Nerium oleander + P. vaginatum, (5) Tamarix gallica + P. vaginatum, and (6) unplanted control. Eighteen months after the beginning of the experimentation, all the plant species were found in healthy condition and well developed. Throughout the whole experiment, the monitored biological parameters (total microbial population and dehydrogenase activity) were generally observed as constantly increasing in all the planted sediments more than in the control, pointing out an improvement of the chemico-physical conditions of both microorganisms and plants. The concentration decrease of organic and inorganic contaminants (>35 and 20 %, respectively) in the treatments with plants, particularly in the T. gallica + P. vaginatum, confirmed the importance of the root-microorganism interaction in activating the decontamination processes. Finally, the healthy state of the plants and the sediment characteristics, approaching those of an uncontaminated natural soil (technosoil), indicated the efficiency and success of this technology for brackish sediments reclamation.  相似文献

Benthic macrofauna can influence inputs and transformations of energy and matter in estuaries, affecting both the stocks of vital materials (e.g. carbon, oxygen) and the rates of key processes (e.g. organic matter decomposition, nutrient uptake). Although a number of studies have identified shifts in functional groups or biological traits in relation to anthropogenic stressors, there have been few field‐based assessments of changes in functioning associated with stress gradients. We used a comparative experimental approach to investigate functioning on two sandflats with differing exposures to urban contaminants. Apart from significant differences in sediment contaminant concentrations (43.2 ± 1.8 mg kg?1 Zn and 15.6 ± 0.9 mg kg?1 Pb at the Pollen site; 17.7 ± 0.7 mg kg?1 Zn and 7.9 ± 0.9 mg kg?1 Pb at the Waiheke site), the two sandflats were readily comparable: both had similar sediment grain size distributions and were dominated by the same macrofaunal species; and both were in non‐eutrophic New Zealand marine reserves with low ambient sediment organic matter content. To better understand the effects of contaminants on biologically mediated transformations of organic matter into inorganic nutrients, we manipulated sediment organic matter content and macrofaunal abundance in standardized treatments at each site. Fluxes of oxygen and ammonium, which are linked to key sandflat processes such as organic matter decomposition and benthic photosynthesis, were measured as response variables 1 week after the experimental manipulations. We predicted more efficient organic matter processing on the uncontaminated flat and thus expected to see elevated ammonium efflux in response to organic enrichment treatments at this site. Higher rates of benthic photosynthesis were predicted for plots with higher ammonium efflux, as ammonium is a readily utilizable form of limiting inorganic nitrogen. We documented significant positive relationships between ammonium uptake and benthic primary production on the uncontaminated flat, but weaker/insignificant relationships at the contaminated site. Our data were consistent with theories of increased variability and a decoupling of system processes with increasing amounts of stress.  相似文献

Fine sediments, which account for the majority of total fluvial sediment flux, have been suggested to degrade coral reefs on a global scale. Furthermore, sediment impacts can be exacerbated by extreme rainfall events associated with global climate change and anthropogenic nutrient enrichment. We report the findings from a series of mesocosm experiments exploring the effects of short-term sedimentation and nutrient enrichment on the interactions between the hard coral Acropora muricata, the sea anemone Mesactinia ganesis, and the green macroalga Codium edule. Mesocosms were manipulated to simulate either unimpacted reefs or reefs exposed to elevated levels of fine sediments for 10 or 14 days to simulate the effects of heavy rainfall. The first and second experiments were aimed to examine the effects of inorganic and organic sediments, respectively. The third experiment was designed to examine the interactive effects of nutrient enrichment and elevated sediment loads. Neither inorganic nor organic sediment loadings significantly affected the physiological performance of the coral, but, importantly, did reduce its ability to compete with other organisms. Photosynthetic efficiencies of both the green macroalga and the sea anemone increased in response to both sediment loadings when they were simultaneously exposed to nutrient enrichment. While organic sediment loading increased the nitrogen content of the green macroalga in the first experiment, inorganic sediment loading increased its phosphorus content in the second experiment. The coral mortality due to sea anemones attack was significantly greater upon exposure to enriched levels of organic sediments and nutrients. Our findings suggest that the combined effects of short-term sedimentation and nutrient enrichment could cause replacement of corals by sea anemones on certain coral reefs.  相似文献

1. Despite real improvement in the water quality of many previously eutrophic lakes, the recovery of submerged vegetation has been poor. This lack of recovery is possibly caused by the accumulation of organic matter on the top layer of the sediment, which is produced under eutrophic conditions. Hence, our objective was to study the combined effects of quantity and lability of sediment organic matter on the biomass of Echinodorus repens and Littorella uniflora and on the force required to uproot plants of L. uniflora. 2. Lake sediments, rich in organic matter, were collected from four lakes, two with healthy populations of isoetids and two from which isoetids had disappeared. The four lake sediments were mixed with sand to prepare a range of experimental sediments that differed in quantity and lability of sediment organic matter. Two isoetid species, E. repens and L. uniflora, were grown in these sediments for 8 weeks. Sediment quality parameters, including elemental composition, nutrient availability and mineralisation rates, were determined on the raw sources of sediment from the lakes. Porewater and surface water were analysed for the chemical composition in all mixtures. At the end of the experiment, plants were harvested and their biomass, tissue nutrient concentration and (for L. uniflora) uprooting force were measured. 3. For both species, all plants survived and showed no signs of stress on all types of sediment. The biomass of E. repens increased as the fraction of organic matter was increased (from 6 to 39% of organic content, depending upon sediment type). However, in some of the sediment types, a higher fraction of organic matter led to a decline in biomass. The biomass of L. uniflora was less responsive to organic content and was decreased significantly only when the least labile sediment source was used to create the gradient of organic matter. The increase in shoot biomass for both species was closely related to higher CO2 concentrations in the porewater of the sediment. The force required to uproot L. uniflora plants over a range of sediment organic matter fitted a Gaussian model; it reached a maximum at around 15% organic matter and declined significantly above that. 4. Increasing organic matter content of the sediment increased the biomass of isoetid plants, as the positive effects of higher CO2 production outweighed the negative effects of low oxygen concentration in more (labile) organic sediments. However, sediment organic matter can adversely affect isoetid survival by promoting the uprooting of plants.  相似文献

Rationale and Experimental Approach

Aggregate dredging is a growing source of anthropogenic disturbance in coastal UK waters and has the potential to impact marine systems through the smothering of benthic fauna with organically loaded screening discards. This study investigates the tolerance of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis to such episodic smothering events using a multi-factorial design, including organic matter concentration, temperature, sediment fraction size and duration of burial as important predictor variables.

Results and Discussion

Mussel mortality was significantly higher in organically loaded burials when compared to control sediments after just 2 days. Particularly, M. edulis specimens under burial in fine sediment with high (1%) concentrations of organic matter experienced a significantly higher mortality rate (p<0.01) than those under coarse control aggregates. Additionally, mussels exposed to the summer maximum temperature treatment (20°C) exhibited significantly increased mortality (p<0.01) compared to those in the ambient treatment group (15°C). Total Oxygen Uptake rates of experimental aggregates were greatest (112.7 mmol m-2 day-1) with 1% organic loadings in coarse sediment at 20°C. Elevated oxygen flux rates in porous coarse sediments are likely to be a function of increased vertical migration of anaerobically liberated sulphides to the sediment-water interface. However, survival of M. edulis under bacterial mats of Beggiatoa spp. indicates the species’ resilience to sulphides and so we propose that the presence of reactive organic matter within the burial medium may facilitate bacterial growth and increase mortality through pathogenic infection. This may be exacerbated under the stable interstitial conditions in fine sediment and increased bacterial metabolism under high temperatures. Furthermore, increased temperature may impose metabolic demands upon the mussel that cannot be met during burial-induced anaerobiosis.

Summary

Lack of consideration for the role of organic matter and temperature during sedimentation events may lead to an overestimation of the tolerance of benthic species to smothering from dredged material.  相似文献

Here we studied the effects of adding organic carbon and nutrients to sediment on the physiology and survival of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica in a field experiment in the Medes Islands (NE Spain). Nine randomly selected plots were established at a depth of 10 m; three were enriched with organic carbon (OM treatment), three with organic carbon and nutrients (OMN treatment), and three were kept as controls (CON). The experiment was performed over 5 months and sampling of plants and sediments was done in March, May and July 2002. Sediment sulfide pools and pore water ammonium concentrations increased significantly in OM and OMN plots, both treatments showing increased reducing conditions in the sediment. Plants in these two treatments showed higher mortality and lower biomass compared to plants from CON plots. The greatest effects on seagrass occurred in the OMN plots, indicating a synergistic effect of organic carbon and nutrient additions. Treatments had significant effects on plant nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) metabolism, shown by an increase in free amino acid (FAA) content, a change in FAA composition and a lack of increase in N and P tissue content. Treated plants showed higher g-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and malate concentrations and lower concentrations of non-structural carbohydrates compared to CON, indicating that anaerobic respiration in below-ground tissues occurred. Several of the physiological changes shown by P. oceanica can be interpreted as adaptations to anoxia exposure. However, the increased mortality in treated plots demonstrates that this seagrass does not tolerate highly reduced sediments.  相似文献

Elevated rates of sediment run-off, as a result of changes in land-use and climate, are a significant threat to marine coastal communities, with a potential to cause broad-scale, long-term alteration of habitats. Individual sedimentation events can smother estuarine flats with terrigenous sediments, creating a significant disturbance to local benthic communities. Variations in the degree to which a habitat is altered, the rate at which mixing occurs, and species-specific dispersal and responses to the altered habitat, suggest that colonisation of terrestrial sediment depositions will vary with location, both between and within estuaries. This study was designed to explore the effect that variations in wave-induced hydrodynamics would have on long-term colonisation of terrestrial sediment depositions on intertidal flats. Sites for the experimental deposition of terrestrial sediment were located along a gradient in wave exposure, with only limited variation in immersion times (30 min) and ambient sediment particle sizes (predominantly fine sand). Over 20 months, periodic measurements were made of factors predicted to affect colonisation: the sediment characteristics of the deposited sediment; local-scale wave climate; bioturbation of the deposited sediment; and local populations of benthic invertebrates. Neither opportunistic use of the new resource, progressive recovery or facilitation by colonising macrofauna was observed. Little vertical mixing of the deposited and existing sediment by either waves or bioturbators occurred; instead bedload transport was the dominant process. Local differences in hydrodynamic conditions and macrobenthic communities resulted in site-specific colonisation of the experimental plots. The strength and duration of the macrofaunal response to deposited sediment observed in this study suggest that chronic small-scale (m's) patchy deposition of terrestrial sediment in the intertidal marine environment has a strong potential to alter both habitats and communities.  相似文献

Despite increasing concern that sediment loads from disturbed watersheds facilitate algal dominance on tropical reefs, little is known of how sediments interact with two primary drivers of algal communities, nutrients and herbivory. We examined the effects of sediment loads on the thalli of two increasingly abundant genera of macroalgae, Galaxaura and Padina, in a bay subject to terrestrial sediment influx in Mo’orea, French Polynesia. Field experiments examining (1) overall effects of ambient sediments and (2) interacting effects of sediments (ambient/removal) and herbivores (caged/uncaged) demonstrated that sediments had strong but opposite effects on both species’ biomass accumulation. Sediment removal increased accumulation of Padina boryana Thivy 50% in the initial field experiment but had no effect in the second; rather, in a novel interaction, herbivores overcompensated for increases in tissue nutrient stores that occurred with sediments loads, likely by preferential consumption of nutrient-rich meristematic tissues. Despite negative effects of sediments on biomass, Padina maintained rapid growth across treatments in both experiments. In contrast, positive growth in Galaxaura divaricata Kjellman only occurred with ambient sediment loads. In mesocosm experiments testing interactions of added nutrients and sediments on growth, Galaxaura grew at equivalent rates with sediments (collected from thalli on the reef) as with additions of nitrate and phosphate, suggesting sediments provide a nutrient subsidy. For Padina, however, the only effect was a 50% reduction in growth with sediment. Overall, retention of thallus sediments creates a positive feedback that Galaxaura appears to require to sustain net growth, while Padina merely tolerates sediments. These results indicate that sediments can modify nutrient and herbivore control of algae in ways that differ among species, with the potential for strong and unexpected effects on the abundance and composition of tropical reef macroalgae.  相似文献

The input of terrestrial silt and clay (hereafter mud) into coastal environments can alter sediment grain size distribution affecting the structure and functioning of benthic communities. The relationship between sediment mud content and macrofaunal community structure has been well documented, but not the effects on ecosystem function. In 143 plots from the mid-intertidal sites in 9 estuaries, we measured sediment properties, macrofaunal community composition and fluxes of O2 and NH4 + across the sediment–water interface to derive process-based measures of ecosystem function across the sand–mud gradient. We observed reductions in measures of macrofaunal diversity and decreases in the maximum density of key bioturbating bivalves (Austrovenus stutchburyi and Macomona liliana) with increased mud content. Concurrently, the maximum rates of sediment oxygen consumption (SOC), NH4 + efflux (NH4 +) and biomass standardized gross primary production (GPPChl-a ) also decreased with increasing mud content. Environmental predictors explained 34–39% (P = 0.005–0.01) of the total variation in ecosystem function in distance-based linear models. After partitioning out the effect of mud, A. stutchburyi abundance was positively correlated and explained 25 and 23% (P = 0.0001) of the variation of SOC and NH4 +, respectively. Also, mud content (negatively correlated) and temperature (positively correlated) explained 26% of variability in GPPChl-a (P = 0.0001). Our results highlight the importance of increased mud content and the associated reduction in the abundance of strongly interacting key species on the loss of ecosystem function in intertidal sand flats.  相似文献

To elucidate the geomicrobiological factors controlling nitrification in salt marsh sediments, a comprehensive approach involving sediment geochemistry, process rate measurements, and quantification of the genetic potential for nitrification was applied to three contrasting salt marsh habitats: areas colonized by the tall (TS) or short (SS) form of Spartina alterniflora and unvegetated creek banks (CBs). Nitrification and denitrification potential rates were strongly correlated with one another and with macrofaunal burrow abundance, indicating that coupled nitrification-denitrification was enhanced by macrofaunal burrowing activity. Ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) gene copy numbers were used to estimate the ammonia-oxidizing bacterial population size (5.6 × 104 to 1.3 × 106 g of wet sediment−1), which correlated with nitrification potentials and was 1 order of magnitude higher for TS and CB than for SS. TS and CB sediments also had higher Fe(III) content, higher Fe(III)-to-total reduced sulfur ratios, higher Fe(III) reduction rates, and lower dissolved sulfides than SS sediments. Iron(III) content and reduction rates were positively correlated with nitrification and denitrification potential and amoA gene copy number. Laboratory slurry incubations supported field data, confirming that increased amounts of Fe(III) relieved sulfide inhibition of nitrification. We propose that macrofaunal burrowing and high concentrations of Fe(III) stimulate nitrifying bacterial populations, and thus may increase nitrogen removal through coupled nitrification-denitrification in salt marsh sediments.  相似文献

A microcosm experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of different levels of paint-derived tributyltin (TBT), and different modes of exposure, on the diversity, feeding mode and assemblage structure of estuarine nematodes. Estuarine meiofauna were exposed to two types of treatments (mixture and deposit), containing uncontaminated sediment and sediment spiked with paint-derived TBT at 1 and 10 mg kg−1 for a duration of 4 and 8 weeks. In the mixture treatments, meiofauna assemblages were incubated in clean and contaminated sediments. In the deposit treatments meiofauna assemblages were exposed to the deposition of clean and contaminated sediments simulating the disposal of TBT-contaminated dredged material at sea. Effects of TBT on nematode species are likely to occur by (a) the uptake of leached TBT from the sediment pore water through their permeable cuticle, resulting in decreased diversity and increased changes in assemblage structure with increasing levels of TBT contamination, and (b) direct ingestion of paint-particles with food, resulting in a significant decline of nonselective deposit feeders in contaminated sediments. The numbers of many species differed greatly between mixture and deposit treatments. Results from multivariate analyses showed an immediate and dominant effect of burial on most nematode species in the deposit treatments compared to the longer-term effect of TBT contamination. The survival rates of nematode species in the top layer of these sediments depended on their ability to withstand TBT contamination as well as their potential to migrate, survive and reproduce in the deposit. This study unambiguously showed that the response of nematode species depended not only on the level of TBT contamination but also on the duration and mode of exposure to contaminated sediment, which should be taken into account when assessing the effects of TBT on aquatic communities.  相似文献

Terrestrial runoff increases siltation and nutrient availability on coastal coral reefs worldwide. However the factors determining stress in corals when exposed to short-term sedimentation, including the interactions between sediments and nutrients, are little understood. We exposed corals to ten different sediment types at environmentally relevant concentrations (33 to 160 mg DW cm−2) and exposure times (12 to 60 h) in laboratory and field experiments. The sediments originated from 2 estuaries, 2 nearshore and one offshore locations and also included ground-up aragonite. For two of these sediments, three grain size fractions were used (silt < 63 μm, fine sand: 63-250 μm, medium sand: 250-500 μm). Sediments were characterised by 19 parameters grouped into “physical”, “organic and nutrient-related” and “geochemical” parameters. Changes in the photosynthetic yield of the coral Montipora peltiformis was measured by pulse-amplitude modulated chlorophyll fluorometry (PAM) as proxy for photophysiological stress from exposure, and to determine rates of recovery. Different sediments exerted greatly contrasting levels of stress in the corals. Our results show that grain size and organic and nutrient-related sediment properties are key factors determining sedimentation stress in corals after short-term exposure. Photophysiological stress was measurable after 36 h of exposure to most of the silt-sized sediments, and coral recovery was incomplete after 48 to 96 h recovery time. The four sandy sediment types caused no measurable stress at the same concentration for the same exposure time. Stress levels were strongly related to the values of organic and nutrient-related parameters in the sediment, weakly related to the physical parameters and unrelated to the geochemical parameters measured. M. peltiformis removed the sandy grain size classes more easily than the silt, and nutrient-poor sediments were removed more easily than nutrient-rich sediments. Anoxia developed on the sediment surfaces of the nutrient-rich silts, which had become slimy and smelled of hydrogen sulphide, suggesting increased bacterial activity. Our finding that silt-sized and nutrient-rich sediments can stress corals after short exposure, while sandy sediments or nutrient-poor silts affect corals to a lesser extent, will help refining predictions of sedimentation threats to coral reefs at given environmental conditions.  相似文献
