Abstract: The ontogeny of the trilobite Protopeltura aciculata (Angelin, 1854) is described on the basis of material from the upper Cambrian (Furongian) of Andrarum (Skåne) and Hjelmsäter (Västergötland), Sweden. P. aciculata is present in the Parabolina brevispina and Parabolina spinulosa zones. Protopeltura aciculata is represented by all stages of growth, from early protaspides to holaspides, although most of the specimens are disarticulated and precise degrees are unknown. The cranidia have therefore been allocated to five morphological groups. Cuticular sculpture of the cranidia changes throughout ontogeny. Large tubercles are present in earlier stages, disappear gradually in middle meraspid stages and are replaced with a very faint granulation. The transitory pygidium, relatively large and shield‐shaped with upwardly and backwardly directed marginal spines in early meraspides, later becomes very small, triangular‐shaped and lacking spines as a late meraspid and holaspid. The development of hypostomes and librigenae is also described. Protopeltura aciculata shows major intraspecific variations throughout development, especially regarding the pygidium where variation is much less constrained than in many other olenids. This high developmental plasticity may be a survival strategy for a trilobite living in a stressed environment. Protopeltura inhabited a dysoxic environment, possibly unusually prone to localised spreading of anoxic or toxic water. Some morphs may have been less vulnerable than others to such stresses, surviving by chance and thus enabling the species to continue.  相似文献

Eight species of the lichen genus Phaeophyscia are recorded from East Africa. Two species, P. confusa Moberg and P. fumosa Moberg, are described as new. The delimitation of the genus is discussed and the publication date of the combinations P. hirsuta (Mereschk.) Moberg, P. hispidula (Ach.) Moberg and P. rubropulchra (De–gel.) Moberg is stated.  相似文献

The species Daday (1898) describes as Alona globulosa has been critically studied, based on many populations from tropical and subtropical regions of the world, over its whole geographical range. A new species and a new subspecies are described. Based on the morphological characters of this species group, which are markedly different from those of the genera previously used for this species, namely Alona, Alonella, and Indialona, a new genus Notoalona is established. N. globulosa (Daday, 1898) is designated as the type species. Morphological differences of Notoalona, Alona, Alonella, and Indialona are discussed. The diagnostic characters of the genus Notoalona include 1) two bean-like thickenings as headpores on the headshield, 2) a row of submarginal setae along the posterior half of the ventral margin of carapace, 3) first trunk limb ODL with one seta and IDL with 3 setae and a small seta-like notch, 4) small branched seta dorsal to posterior lobe of trunk limb-I, 5) entire carapace of the ephippial female modified as an ephippium with a foamy mass surrounding the egg. N. globulosa has a wide distribution in Asia, Africa, and Australia. The Australian material has been designated as the subspecies australiensis. N. freyi sp. nov. is known only from Florida, USA. More detailed studies are necessary to evaluate the taxonomic status of other populations from America including material described as Alonella sculpta, which certainly belongs to the genus Notoalona.  相似文献

Some additional data on the taxonomy of Blastobasidae are reported. Four new Palaearctic species are described: Blastobasis ponticella sp. n. from the Crimea, North-Western Caucasus, and Transcaucasia; B. centralasiae sp. n. from Central Asia; Hypatopa ibericella sp. n. from the Iberian Peninsula, and Pseudohypatopa beljaevi sp. n. from the Russian Far East (Primorskii Territory). Based on examination of the type material, the following new synonymies are established: Blastobasis phycidella (Zeller, 1839) [= B. roscidella (Zeller, 1847), syn. n.]; Hypatopa inunctella (Zeler, 1839) [= Hypatima haliciella Klemensiewicz, 1898; =Hypatima fuscella Klemensiewicz, 1898, syn. n.]. Blastobasis magna Amsel, 1852, stat. n., originally described as a subspecies of B. roscidella, is considered a distinct species with the range extending throughout the Western Mediterranean.  相似文献

Acastid trilobites from Ludlow strata on Gotland include three stratigraphically non-overlapping species ofAcastella Reed:Acastella madidipes n. sp. (Hemse Marl and Eke Beds),A. breviceps (Angelin 1851) (Burgsvik Beds), andA. amatrix n. sp. (Hamra Beds, and probably Burgsvik Beds). Type and other material ofA. breviceps (Angelin) from the Klinta Formation, Scania, is revised. Meraspid and early holaspid material ofAcastella is described. Some characters supportAcaste and allied taxa of mostly Wenlock age as a monophyletic subfamily Acastinae.Acastella as widely recognized is a grade with Devonian species more closely related to Asteropyginae than to the Ludlow type species. Baltic Ludlow-P?00ED;dolí species previously placed inScotiella Delo form a distinct group,Ewacaste n. gen., that includes a species from the uppermost Eke Beds on Gotland.  相似文献

The Lymnaeidae constitute a significant part of the freshwater molluscan diversity of Greenland. Since 1842, not less than 10 nominal taxa of the species and variety rank were described to organize the diversity of the Greenland lymnaeid snails. All previous attempts to revise these taxa were systematically based on morphological evidence only. Here, we provide a molecular analysis of the phylogenetic affinity and systematic status of three alleged species of the Greenland Lymnaeidae: Lymnaea vahlii (Møller, 1842), Lholboellii (Møller, 1842), and Lpingelii (Møller, 1842). We examined the newly collected material and inspected the type series of the three species. Our results show a very tight relationship between the Greenland snails and the Nearctic species Ladislavella catascopium (Say, 1817) s. lato. From the genetic point of view, the Greenland populations should be classified within Lcatascopium, albeit probably with the merit of a subspecies status. The three nominal species of lymnaeids described by Møller (1842) are apparently synonyms of each other. Our findings assume a rather recent colonization of Greenland by snails arriving from the North American mainland, which is compatible with the so-called “tabula rasa” hypothesis, proposed to explain the currently observed taxonomic diversity of continental animals and plants of the North Atlantic islands. No lymnaeid species endemic to Greenland is thus revealed.  相似文献

The present taxonomic revision recognizes 16 species of Exalloniscus. Seven species, namely E. maschwitzi, E, caudatvs, E. malaccensis, E. bicoloratus from West Malaysia, E. bomeanus from East Malaysia, E. beroni from northern Thailand and E. vietnamensis from Vietnam, are described as new. Lectotypes off. coecus (Dollfus, 1898) and E. albus (Dollfus, 1898) are designated. Diagnostic characters of all the species are illustrated. A map and comments on the distribution and biology of the 16 species are included.  相似文献

A new subspecies, Kailasius autocrator murun Korb, ssp. n., of the species Kailasius autocrator (Avinov, 1913) from the eastern part of the Alai Mountain Ridge is described. This subspecies differs from the other known ones in the smaller size (the fore-wing length is less than 23 mm) and in the presence of 5 black rounded spots in the submarginal area of the hind-wing upper side (4 spots in the nominotypical subspecies and K. a. pshartanus). The new subspecies is shown to be the most archaic one among the subspecies of the genus Kailasius by the wing pattern. Possible ways for the origin of local and small populations of morphologically different subspecies of the genus are discussed.  相似文献

This systematic study recognizes and describes 14 species of the genus Mallos O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1902 and three species of the genus Mexitlia Lehtinen, 1967. Three species of Mallos – Mallos gertschi, Mallos chamberlini and Mallos macrolirus –and one species of Mexitlia – Mexitlia altima –are newly described. Mallos ghiggi (Caporiacco, 1938) is considered a synonym of Mexitlia grandis (O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1896). Mexitlia grandis is considered the senior synonym of Mexitlia avara (Banks, 1898). Two species, Mallos jlavovittatus (Keyserling, 1880) and Mallos nigrescens (Caporiacco, 1955) are removed from Mallos. The males of Mallos kraussi Gertsch, 1946 and Mallos blandus Chamberlin and Gertsch 1958, are described for the first time. A cladistic analysis based on 26 morphological characters produced a cladogram that supports the monophyly of Mallos and the validity of Mexitlia. This cladogram presents a phylogenetic framework for considering the evolution of social behaviour in Mallos.  相似文献

The taxonomy of treeshrews (Order Scandentia) has long been complicated by ambiguous morphological species boundaries, and the treeshrews of the Palawan faunal region of the Philippines are no exception. Four named forms in the genus Tupaia Raffles, 1821, have been described from four island groups based on subtle qualitative morphological characters, and as many as three distinct species have been recognized. A recent molecular phylogenetic study of relationships among Tupaia species suggests that the two currently-recognized treeshrew species from the Palawan faunal region diverged very recently relative to other sister-species divergences within the genus and may not represent species-level taxonomic entities. Here we review the taxonomic and biogeographic histories of the Tupaia taxa from this region. We also collected craniodental data from 133 skulls of all four named forms, representing five island populations, and conducted univariate and multivariate analyses on these data. Our morphometric results are consistent with molecular results, further suggesting that there is insufficient evidence to recognize T. moellendorffi Matschie, 1898, as a separate species from T. palawanensis Thomas, 1894. Our analyses also revealed a craniodentally divergent population from the island of Balabac, which has never been considered a distinct subspecies (or species) from the population on Palawan. These results have conservation implications for the island populations in our analyses, but additional surveys and molecular evidence will be required to fully assess conservation priorities for the treeshrews of the Palawan faunal region.  相似文献

The indigenous North American micropterigid genus Epimartyria Walsingham,1898 is revised. Three species are recognized, including Epimartyria auricrinella Walsingham, 1898 which occurs widely over much of the northeastern United States and Canada, a new species, Epimartyria bimaculella Davis & Landry from northwestern United States and Canada, and Epimartyria pardella (Walsingham, 1880) from northern California to northern Oregon. The larva of Epimartyria auricrinella is described in detail, supplemented with illustrations of the external structure of the larval integument. The larval plastron is described and illustrated for Epimartyria, and this is compared with the plastrons of Neomicropteryx Issiki, 1931 and Micropterix Hübner, 1825. COI barcode sequences show that the three species are genetically distinct, congruent with morphological differences. Marked haplotype divergence within some Epimartyria auricrinella populations appears to be unrelated to morphology, geography or phenology.  相似文献

The two known species of uacaries, inhabitants of the upper Amazonian region, are the black head Cacajao melanocephalus with subspecies C. m. melanocephalus Humboldt and C. m. ouakary Spix, and the larger bald head uacari C. calvus with subspecies C. c. ucayalii Thomas, C. c. rubicundus I. Geoffroy and Deville, C. c. calvus I. Geoffroy, and C. c. novaesi described as new. The diagnostic generic characters described are the external, cranial, dental, some postcranial, and cytogenetic. The species are described and compared and their geographic distribution plotted with those of their subspecies delimited. Sexual differences are outlined. Apart from size-related characters, the species and subspecies are distinguished by pelage pattern of head and coloration in general. It is shown that both species could have diverged from a hairy-headed melanistic ancestral form. Pelage divergence in the descendants was expressed by the more pilose head of C. melanocephalus, and less pilose of C. calvus. Coloration differentiation was geographic and followed metachromic lines with mutation from eumelanism to partial pheomelanism (reddish or golden) in C. melanocephalus and to virtually complete pheomelanism in C. calvus. The subspecies of each species are distinguished by color patterns resulting from selective bleaching or dilution of the pheomelanin fields. The most saturate pheomelanic subspecies of C. calvus is C. c. ucayalii and the most dilute is the albinotic C. c. calvus. Correlation between coloration and environment is not evident. A gazetteer identifies all locality records plotted by numbers on the geographic distribution maps.  相似文献

The larvae of Leptus Latreille, 1796 (Acarina: Erythraeidae) of Europe and North America are comprehensively revised. Of those described since 1900 a total of 34 species is considered recognizable and capable of being keyed; no species described before 1900 is considered recognizable. The nominal type of the genus, Acarus phalangii de Geer, 1778 is rejected as an illegitimate name. Eighteen European and 17 North American species are described and keyed, of which 17 are new to science. One new subspecies from North America, of a species previously known from Europe, is described and keyed. Standard metric data are given for each species or subspecies from available specimens (except two North American species, L. ariel Southcott and L. clarki Southcott, recently described elsewhere; for these last-named two additional metric data are given). Larvae have been recorded from April to September, with the greatest number found being for July and August.
Protonymphs are described for two North American species ( L. ghiradellae sp. nov. and L. welbourni sp. nov. ), and deutonymphs for two North American species ( L. calix sp. nov. and L. ghiradellae ). Keys are given to separate the reared protonymphs, and three described deutonymphs (the two preceding and the European L. galerucae Feider). Data on the duration of the protonymphal instar suggest that in North America and Europe there are two modes: one lasting 3–4 weeks, the other 5–7 months. Developmental abnormalities are recorded systematically.  相似文献

The lower/upper Emsian boundary witnessed prominent diversification of biostratigraphically important genera Polygnathus Hinde, Caudicriodus Bultynck, and Latericriodus Müller. In contrast, conodonts previously reported around this boundary from the South China Block were characterized by relatively low species or subspecies diversity, and only a few widely distributed and extensively studied zone-defining taxa were recorded. In this paper, conodonts from the Daliantang Formation at the Daliantang section (Guangnan, southeastern Yunnan), one of the representative sections of the transitional facies between the benthic Xiangzhou facies and the pelagic Nandan facies, are investigated. The conodont fauna shows a remarkably high species or subspecies diversity, with fourteen taxa that are assignable to the notoperbonus Zone and inversus Zone. Five polygnathid species are described: P. gronbergi Klapper and Jonson, P. inversus Klapper and Jonson, Polygnathus sp. B, P. luciae Martínez-Pérez and Valenzuela-Ríos, and P. mashkovae Bardashev. The latter two are reported for the first time from the South China Block. Additionally, three icriodontid taxa are also described, of which L. guangnanensis n. sp. is characterized by distinctly chevron-shaped transverse rows in the anterior part and a well-developed process branching off to the outer side. The new conodont record increases our understanding of the diversification and faunal composition around the lower/upper Emsian boundary in the South China Block. It contributes to the regional and inter-regional biostratigraphical correlation between shallower- and deeper-water facies and also furnishes important South China material for future discussion and deliberation on the position of the lower/upper Emsian boundary.  相似文献
