The extent to which stomatal conductance (gs) was capable of responding to reduced hydraulic conductance (k)and preventing cavitation-inducing xylem pressures was evaluated in the small riparian tree, Betula occidentalis Hook. We decreased k by inducing xylem cavitation in shoots using an air-injection technique. From 1 to 18 d after shoot injection we measured midday transpiration rate (E), gs, and xylem pressure (Ψp-xylem) on individual leaves of the crown. We then harvested the shoot and made direct measurements of k from the trunk (2–3 cm diameter) to the distal tip of the petioles of the same leaves measured for E and gs. The k measurement was expressed per unit leaf area (kl, leaf-specific conductance). Leaves measured within 2 d of shoot injection showed reduced gs and E relative to non-injected controls, and both parameters were strongly correlated with kl At this time, there was no difference in leaf Ψp-xylem between injected shoots and controls, and leaf Ψp-xylem was not significantly different from the highest cavitation-inducing pressure (Ψp-cav) in the branch xylem (-1.43 ± 0.029 MPa, n=8). Leaves measured 7–18 d after shoots were injected exhibited a partial return of gs and E values to the control range. This was associated with a decrease in leaf Ψp-xylem below Ψp-cav and loss of foliage. The results suggest the stomata were incapable of long-term regulation of E below control values and that reversion to higher E caused dieback via cavitation.  相似文献

Iron chlorosis in the calcareous soils is one most important stress factors worldwide that limits photosynthesis and decreases fruit yield and quality. Certain soil rhizobacteria produce organic compounds such as plant acids and they may reduce the soil rhizosphere pH and affect ferric chelate reductase (FC-R) activity in root. However, there is no knowledge regarding changes in organic acids content and FC-R activities of leaf due to rhizobacterial root inoculation. Therefore, the efficiency of six plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) were tested on apple cv. Braeburn on M9 and MM106 rootstocks. The results of the experiment showed leaf organic acid contents, iron quantity of soil, root and leaf and root and leaf FC-R activity were significantly affected via rhizobacteria applications in apple plants. In MM106 and M9, there was a remarkable increase in Fe in M3 inoculated soil by 95 and 89%, respectively, compared to control. Average increases in citric, malic, malonic, butyric and lactic acid in the leaf were obtained from rhizobacterial root inoculations of 25.1, 21.8, 29.6, 18.0 and 18.2% in Braeburn/MM106, respectively. In Braeburn/M9, MFDCa1 application increased all organic acid concentrations compared to the control. MFDCa2 treatment caused the maximum leaf FC-R activity in Braeburn on M9 and MM106 (60.9 and 50.3 nmol Fe+2 g?1 FW h?1, respectively) while the least values were determined in the control (33.5 and 29.9 nmol Fe+2 g?1 FW h?1, respectively). This study showed the bacterial strains tested in our study may be used as a biofertilizer instead of Fe fertilizers.

Recent work has shown that stomatal conductance (gs) and assimilation (A) are responsive to changes in the hydraulic conductance of the soil to leaf pathway (KL), but no study has quantitatively described this relationship under controlled conditions where steady‐state flow is promoted. Under steady‐state conditions, the relationship between gs, water potential (Ψ) and KL can be assumed to follow the Ohm's law analogy for fluid flow. When boundary layer conductance is large relative to gs, the Ohm's law analogy leads to gs = KLsoilleaf)/D, where D is the vapour pressure deficit. Consequently, if stomata regulate Ψleaf and limit A, a reduction in KL will cause gs and A to decline. We evaluated the regulation of Ψleaf and A in response to changes in KL in well‐watered ponderosa pine seedlings (Pinus ponderosa). To vary KL, we systematically reduced stem hydraulic conductivity (k) using an air injection technique to induce cavitation while simultaneously measuring Ψleaf and canopy gas exchange in the laboratory under constant light and D. Short‐statured seedlings (< 1 m tall) and hour‐long equilibration times promoted steady‐state flow conditions. We found that Ψleaf remained constant near ? 1·5 MPa except at the extreme 99% reduction of k when Ψleaf fell to ? 2·1 MPa. Transpiration, gs, A and KL all declined with decreasing k (P < 0·001). As a result of the near homeostasis in bulk Ψleaf, gs and A were directly proportional to KL (R2 > 0·90), indicating that changes in KL may affect plant carbon gain.  相似文献

We assessed the daily time‐courses of CO2 assimilation rate (A), leaf transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance for water vapour (gs), leaf water potential ( Ψ w) and tree transpiration in a wet and a dry season for three late‐stage canopy rainforest tree species in French Guiana differing in leaf carbon isotope composition ( δ 13C). The lower sunlit leaf δ 13C values found in Virola surinamensis ( ? 29·9‰) and in Diplotropis purpurea ( ? 30·9‰), two light‐demanding species, as compared to Eperua falcata ( ? 28·6‰), a shade‐semi‐tolerant species, were clearly associated with higher maximum gs values of sunlit leaves in the two former species. These two species were also characterized by a high sensitivity of gs, sap flow density (Ju) and canopy conductance (gc) to seasonal soil drought, allowing maintenance of high midday Ψ w values in the dry season. The data for Diplotropis provided an original picture of increasing midday Ψ w with increasing soil drought. In Virola, stomata were extremely sensitive to seasonal soil drought, leading to a dramatic decrease in leaf and tree transpiration in the dry season, whereas midday Ψ w remained close to ? 0·3 MPa. The mechanisms underlying such an extremely high sensitivity of stomata to soil drought remain unknown. In Eperua, gs of sunlit leaves was non‐responsive to seasonal drought, whereas Ju and gc were lower in the dry season. This suggests a higher stomatal sensitivity to seasonal drought in shaded leaves than in sunlit ones in this species.  相似文献

The leaf gas exchange of mature olive trees (Olea europaea L.) was characterized over a wide range of water deficits in the field during 1998, in Cordoba, Spain. Leaf photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gl) responded diurnally and seasonally to variations in tree water status and evaporative demand. In the absence of water stress, A and gl were generally high during autumn and low in days of high vapour pressure deficits (VPD). Leaf A varied between 0 and 2 µmol m?2 s?1 under severe water deficits that lowered the stem water potential (Ψx) to ?8·0 MPa, but recovered rapidly following rehydration. Transpiration efficiency (TE) was curvilinearly related to VPD and not influenced by water deficits except in cases of severe water stress, where low TE values were observed at Ψx below ?4 MPa. Three models of leaf conductance were calibrated and validated with the experimental data; two were based on the model proposed by Leuning (L) and the other was derived from the widely used Jarvis (J) model. The L models performed better than the J model in two validation tests. The scatter of the predictions and the limited accuracy of all three models suggest that, in addition to the physiological and environmental variables considered, there are additional endogenous factors influencing the gl of olive leaves.  相似文献

We investigated how leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) of loblolly pine trees is influenced by soil nitrogen amendment (N) in stands subjected to ambient or elevated CO2 concentrations (CO2a and CO2e, respectively). We also examined how Kleaf varies with changes in reference leaf water potential (Ψleaf‐ref) and stomatal conductance (gs‐ref) calculated at vapour pressure deficit, D of 1 kPa. We detected significant reductions in Kleaf caused by N and CO2e, but neither treatment affected pre‐dawn or midday Ψleaf. We also detected a significant CO2e‐induced reduction in gs‐ref and Ψleaf‐ref. Among treatments, the sensitivity of Kleaf to Ψleaf was directly related to a reference Kleaf (Kleaf‐ref computed at Ψleaf‐ref). This liquid‐phase response was reflected in a similar gas‐phase response, with gs sensitivity to D proportional to gs‐ref. Because leaves represented a substantial component of the whole‐tree conductance, reduction in Kleaf under CO2e affected whole‐tree water use by inducing a decline in gs‐ref. The consequences of the acclimation of leaves to the treatments were: (1) trees growing under CO2e controlled morning leaf water status less than CO2a trees resulting in a higher diurnal loss of Kleaf; (2) the effect of CO2e on gs‐ref was manifested only during times of high soil moisture.  相似文献

Whole-canopy measurements of water flux were used to calculate stomatal conductance (g s ) and transpiration (E) for seedlings of western water birch (Betula occidentalis Hook.) under various soil-plant hydraulic conductances (k), evaporative driving forces (ΔN; difference in leaf-to-air molar fraction of water vapor), and soil water potentials (Ψs). As expected, g s dropped in response to decreased k or ΨS, or increased ΔN(> 0.025). Field data showed a decrease in mid-day g s with decreasing k from soil-to-petiole, with sapling and adult plants having lower values of both parameters than juveniles. Stomatal closure prevented E and Ψ from inducing xylem cavitation except during extreme soil drought when cavitation occurred in the main stem and probably roots as well. Although all decreases in g s were associated with approximately constant bulk leaf water potential (ψl), this does not logically exclude a feedback response between ΨL and g s . To test the influence of leaf versus root water status on g s , we manipulated water status of the leaf independently of the root by using a pressure chamber enclosing the seedling root system; pressurizing the chamber alters cell turgor and volume only in the shoot cells outside the chamber. Stomatal closure in response to increased ΔN, decreased k, and decreased ΨS was fully or partially reversed within 5 min of pressurizing the soil. Bulk ΨL remained constant before and after soil pressurizing because of the increase in E associated with stomatal opening. When ΔN was low (i.e., < 0.025), pressurizing the soil either had no effect on g s , or caused it to decline; and bulk ΨL increased. Increased Ψl may have caused stomatal closure via increased backpressure on the stomatal apparatus from elevated epidermal turgor. The stomatal response to soil pressurizing indicated a central role of leaf cells in sensing water stress caused by high ΔN, low k, and low ΨS. Invoking a prominent role for feedforward signalling in short-term stomatal control may be premature.  相似文献

Water use and hydraulic architecture were studied in the coffee (Coffea arabica) cultivars San Ramon, Yellow Caturra and Typica growing in the field under similar environmental conditions. The cultivars differed in growth habit, crown architecture, basal sapwood area and total leaf surface area. Transpiration per unit leaf area (E), stomatal conductance (g s), crown conductance (g c), total hydraulic conductance of the soil/leaf pathway (G t) and the stomatal decoupling coefficient, omega (Ω) (Jarvis and McNaughton 1986) were assessed over a range of soil moisture and during partial defoliation treatments. The relationship between sap flow and sapwood area was linear and appeared to be similar for the three cultivars. Variation in g c, E, and G t of intact plants and leaf area-specific hydraulic conductivity (k l) of excised lateral branches was negatively correlated with variation in the ratio of leaf area to sapwood area. Transpiration, g c, and g s were positively correlated with G t. Transpiration and G t varied with total leaf area and were greatest at intermediate values (10 m2) of leaf area. Omega was greatest in Yellow Caturra, the cultivar with the greatest leaf area and a dense crown, and was smallest in Typica, the cultivar with an open crown. Differences in omega were attributable primarily to differences in leaf boundary layer conductance among the cultivars. Plants of each cultivar that were 40% defoliated maintained sap flows comparable to pretreatment plants, but expected compensatory increases in g s were not consistently observed. Despite their contrasting crown morphologies and hydraulic architecture, the three cultivars shared common relationships between water use and hydraulic architectural traits. We investigated phloem-xylem interactions in relation to leaf hydraulic capacity in hybrid aspen (Populus tremula L. × P. tremuloides Michx.) by using phloem girdling method. Removal of bark tissues (phloem girdling) at the branch base resulted in a substantial decline in stomatal conductance (gS), net photosynthetic rate (PN), and leaf hydraulic efficiency, and in increase of leaf water potential (ΨL). Although gS declined more than PN (83 versus 78 %), the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentrations (ci/ca) increased from 0.67 to 0.87 in three days after girdling. Girdling induced a decrease in leaf hydraulic conductance (KL) on average by 43 % (P = 0.006). The changes in gS and leaf conductance to water vapour were co-ordinated with KL only in girdled branches whereas intrinsic water-use efficiency was invariant to KL. The declines in KL with girdling were not accompanied by changes in potassium ion concentration ([K+]), electrical conductivity, or pH of xylem sap. The results suggest that phloem girdling at the branch base does not influence the recirculation of ions between the phloem and xylem in hybrid aspen and the decrease of KL in response to the manipulation is not related to changes in [K+] and total ionic content of xylem sap.  相似文献

Stomata represent one resistor in a series of resistances for carbon and water exchange between the leaf and the atmosphere; the remaining resistors occurring within the leaf, commonly represented as mesophyll conductance to CO2, gm, and leaf hydraulic conductance, kLeaf. Recent studies have proposed that gm and kLeaf may be coordinated across species because of shared pathways. We assessed the correlation between gm and kLeaf within cotton, under growth CO2 partial pressure and irradiance treatments and also with short‐term variation in irradiance and humidity. gm was estimated using two isotopic techniques that allowed partitioning of total gm13C‐gm) into cell wall plus plasma membrane conductance (Δ18O‐gm) and chloroplast membrane conductance (gcm). A weak correlation was found between Δ13C‐gm and kLeaf only when measured under growth conditions. However, Δ18O‐gm was related to kLeaf under both short‐term environmental variation and growth conditions. Partitioning gm showed that gcm was not affected by short‐term changes in irradiance or correlated with kLeaf, but was strongly reduced at high growth CO2 partial pressure. Thus, simultaneous measurements of gm, kLeaf and gcm suggest independent regulation of carbon and water transport across the chloroplast membrane with limited coordinated regulation across the cell wall and plasma membrane.  相似文献

The diffusive conductance (Cs) of rice (Oryza sativa cvs Jaya and Bala) leaves was measured during a soil drying cycle from flooding to decreasing soil water potential (φs) in a controlled-environment chamber. Plants were grown continuously under 5 cm submergence up to 69 days after transplanting and thereafter were subjected to gradual soil drying for a period of 17 days in the vegetative growth stage. In both the cultivars, the values of Cs were generally more on adaxial than abaxial leaf surfaces. This response of stomata during the period of soil drying was independent of leaf rolling. Further, the slopes of the curves (Cs, vs φs) also did not differ significantly (P= 0·05). The total Cs, of both cultivars during flooding was almost equal (0·60 cm s-1) but at the end of the soil drying cycle, the values of total Cs, were 0·11 cm s-l at ψs of -1·3 MPa and 0·08 cm s-1 at ψs, of -0·8 MPa in cvs Jaya and Bala, respectively. For total Cs, slopes differed significantly (P = 0·05). A close relationship between total Cs, and ψs, in both cultivars (Cs, = 0·58-0·40 ψs, for cv. Jaya and Cs= 0·46-0·56 ψs, for cv. Bala) indicated that stomata were sensitive to increasing soil water deficit.  相似文献

Summary Well watered plants of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp cv. California Blackeye No. 5 had maximum photosynthetic rates of 16 mol m-2 s-1 (at ambient CO2 concentration and environmental parameters optimal for high CO2 uptake). Leaf conductance declined with increasing water vapour concentration difference between leaf and air (w), but it increased with increasing leaf temperature at a constant small w. When light was varied, CO2 assimilation and leaf conductance were correlated linearly. We tested the hypothesis that g was controlled by photosynthesis via intercellular CO2 concentration (c i). No unique relationship between (1) c i, (2) the difference between ambient CO2 concentration (c a) and c i, namely c a-c i, or (3) the c i/c a ratio and g was found. g and A appeared to respond to environmental factors fairly independently of each other. The effects of different rates of soil drying on leaf gas exchange were studied. At unchanged air humidity, different rates of soil drying were produced by using (a) different soils, (b) different irrigation schemes and (c) different soil volumes per plant. Although the soil dried to wilting point the relative leaf water content was little affected. Different soil drying rates always resulted in the same response of photosynthetic capacity (A max) and corresponding leaf conductance (g(Amax)) when plotted against percent relative plant-extractable soil water content (W e %) but the relationship with relative soil water content (W e ) was less clear. Above a range of W e of 15%–25%, A max and g(Amax) were both high and responded little to decreasing W e . As soon as W e fell below this range, A max and g(Amax) declined. The data suggest root-to-leaf communication not mediated via relative leaf water content. However, g(Amax) was initially more affected than A max.List of abbreviations A CO2 assimilation - A max photosynthetic capacity at favourable ambient conditions - c a CO2 concentration of the air in the leaf chamber - c i intercellular - CO2 concentration - E transpiration - g leaf conductance - g(Amax) leaf conductance corresponding to photosynthetic capacity - I photon flux rate - T l leaf temperature - W e relative plant-extractable soil water content - W e absolute plant-extractable soil water content - W l relative leaf water content - W s relative soil water content - w difference in water vapour mole fraction between leaf and air - leaf water potential  相似文献

We investigated the contribution of internal water storage and efficiency of water transport to the maintenance of water balance in six evergreen tree species in a Hawaiian dry forest. Wood‐saturated water content, a surrogate for relative water storage capacity, ranged from 70 to 105%, and was inversely related to its morphological correlate, wood density, which ranged between 0·51 and 0·65 g cm?3. Leaf‐specific conductivity (kL) measured in stem segments from terminal branches ranged from 3 to 18 mmol m?1 s?1 MPa?1, and whole‐plant hydraulic efficiency calculated as stomatal conductance (g) divided by the difference between predawn and midday leaf water potential (ΨL), ranged from 70 to 150 mmol m?2 s?1 MPa?1. Hydraulic efficiency was positively correlated with kL (r2 = 0·86). Minimum annual ΨL ranged from ? 1·5 to ? 4·1 MPa among the six species. Seasonal and diurnal variation in ΨL were associated with differences among species in wood‐saturated water content, wood density and kL. The species with higher wood‐saturated water content were more efficient in terms of long‐distance water transport, exhibited smaller diurnal variation in ΨL and higher maximum photosynthetic rates. Smaller diurnal variation in ΨL in species with higher wood‐saturated water content, kL and hydraulic efficiency was not associated with stomatal restriction of transpiration when soil water deficit was moderate, but avoidance of low minimum seasonal ΨL in these species was associated with a substantial seasonal decline in g. Low seasonal minimum ΨL in species with low kL, hydraulic efficiency, and wood‐saturated water content was associated with higher leaf solute content and corresponding lower leaf turgor loss point. Despite the species‐specific differences in leaf water relations characteristics, all six evergreen tree species shared a common functional relationship defined primarily by kL and stem water storage capacity.  相似文献

Hydraulic architecture was studied in shrub species differing in rooting depth in a cold desert in Southern Argentina. All species exhibited strong hydraulic segmentation between leaves, stems and roots with leaves being the most vulnerable part of the hydraulic pathway. Two types of safety margins describing the degree of conservation of the hydraulic integrity were used: the difference between minimum stem or leaf water potential (Ψ) and the Ψ at which stem or leaf hydraulic function was reduced by 50% (ΨΨ50), and the difference between leaf and stem Ψ50. Leaf Ψ50 – stem Ψ50 increased with decreasing rooting depth. Large diurnal decreases in root‐specific hydraulic conductivity suggested high root vulnerability to embolism across all species. Although stem Ψ50 became more negative with decreasing species‐specific Ψsoil and minimum stem Ψ, leaf Ψ50 was independent of Ψ and minimum leaf Ψ. Species with embolism‐resistant stems also had higher maximum stem hydraulic conductivity. Safety margins for stems were >2.1 MPa, whereas those for leaves were negative or only slightly positive. Leaves acted as safety valves to protect the integrity of the upstream hydraulic pathway, whereas embolism in lateral roots may help to decouple portions of the plant from the impact of drier soil layers.  相似文献

Patterns in soil moisture availability affect plant survival, growth and fecundity. Here we link patterns in soil moisture to physiological and demographic consequences in Florida scrub plants. We use data on different temporal scales to (1) determine critical soil moisture content that leads to loss of turgor in leaves during predawn measurements of leaf water status (Ψ crit), (2) describe the temporal patterns in the distribution of Ψ crit, (3) analyze the strength of relationship between rainfall and soil moisture content based on 8 years of data, (4) predict soil moisture content for 75 years of rainfall data, and (5) evaluate morphological, physiological and demographic consequences of spring 2006 drought on dominant shrubs in Florida scrub ecosystem in the light of water-uptake depth as determined by stable isotope analysis (δ18O). Based on 1998–2006 data, the soil moisture content at 50 cm depth explained significant variation in predawn leaf water potential of two dominant shrubs, Quercus chapmanii and Ceratiola ericoides (r 2?=?0.69). During 8 years of data collection, leaves attained Ψ crit only during the peak drought of 2000 when the soil moisture fell below 1% by volume at 50 and 90 cm depth. Precipitation explained a significant variation in soil moisture content (r 2?=?0.62). The patterns in predicted soil moisture for 75 year period, suggested that the frequency of drought occurrence has not increased in time. In spring 2006, the soil reached critical soil moisture levels, with consequences for plant growth and physiological responses. Overall, 24% of plants showed no drought-induced damage, 51% showed damage up to 50%, 21% had intense leaf shedding and 2% of all plants died. Over the drought and recovery period (May–October 2006), relative height growth was significantly lower in plants with greater die-back. All species showed a significant depression in stomatal conductance, while all but deep-rooted palms Sabal etonia and Serenoa repens showed significantly lower predawn (Ψ pd) and mid-day (Ψ md) leaf water potential in dry compared to wet season. Plants experiencing less severe die-back exhibited greater stomatal conductance, suggesting a strong relationship between physiology and morphology. Based on results we suggest that the restoration efforts in Florida scrub should consider the soil moisture requirements of key species.  相似文献

The rate of leaf CO2 assimilation (A l) and leaf area determine the rate of canopy CO2 assimilation (A c) can be thought proportional to assimilate supply for growth and structural requirements of plants. Partitioning of biomass within plants and anatomy of cells within stems can determine how assimilate supply affects both stem growth and wood density. We examined the response of stem growth and wood density to reduced assimilate supply by pruning leaf area. Removing 42% of the leaf area of Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden seedlings did not stimulate leaf-level photosynthesis (A l) or stomatal conductance, contrary to some previous studies. Canopy-level photosynthesis (A c) was reduced by 41% immediately after pruning but due almost solely to continued production of leaves, and was only 21% lower 3 weeks later. Pruning consequently reduced seedling biomass by 24% and stem biomass by 18%. These reductions in biomass were correlated with reduced A c. Pruning had no effect on stem height or diameter and reduced wood density to 338 kg m−3 compared to 366 kg m−3 in control seedlings. The lower wood density in pruned seedlings was associated with a 10% reduction in the thickness of fibre cell walls, and as fibre cell diameter was invariant to pruning, this resulted in smaller lumen diameters. These anatomical changes increased the ratio of cross-sectional area of lumen to area cell wall material within the wood. The results suggest changes to wood density following pruning of young eucalypt trees may be independent of tree volume and of longer duration.  相似文献

Spectral light attenuation, from the surface to 20 m, was followed on 15 sunny days and compared with the vertical phytoplankton distribution. The most penetrating wavelengths lie between 565 and 590 nm. High phytoplankton density causes a rapid loss of blue light with depth. Consequently the yellow and red regions of the spectrum contain a relatively high proportion of the light energy present at a particular depth. The vertical attenuation coefficients of monochromatic light Kd(λ) in the 400 to 700 nm region are influenced significantly by the phytoplankton biomass. The specific light attenuation coefficient for chlorophyll a (kc) is highest below 550 nm (e.g. 450 nm, surface layer: kc = 0.027 m2 · mg−1, n = 14; lowermost layer: kc = 0.044 m2 · mg−1, n = 9).  相似文献

Stands of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L. cv. Kadiri‐3) were grown in controlled environment glasshouses at mean atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 375 or 700 μmol mol?1 and daily mean air temperatures of 28 or 32°C on irrigated or drying soil profiles. Leaf water (Ψl) and solute potential (Ψs), relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (gl) and net photosynthesis (Pn) were measured at midday for the youngest mature leaf throughout the growing season. Elevated CO2 and temperature had no detectable effect on the water relations of irrigated plants, but higher values of RWC, Ψl and Ψs were maintained for longer under elevated CO2 during progressive drought. Turgor potential (Ψp) reached zero when Ψl declined to ?1.6 to ?1.8 MPa in all treatments; turgor was lost sooner when droughted plants were grown under ambient CO2. A 4°C increase in mean air temperature had no effect on Ψs in droughted plants, but elicited a small increase in Ψl; midday gl values were lower under elevated than under ambient CO2, and Ψl and gl declined below ?1.5 MPa and 0.25 cm s?1, respectively, as the soil dried. Despite the low gl values recorded for droughted plants late in the season, Pn was maintained under elevated CO2, but declined to zero 3 weeks before final harvest under ambient CO2. Concurrent reductions in gl and increases in water use efficiency under elevated CO2 prolonged photosynthetic activity during drought and increased pod yields relative to plants grown under ambient CO2. The implications of future increases in atmospheric CO2 for the productivity of indeterminate C3 crops grown in rainfed subsistence agricultural systems in the semi‐arid tropics are discussed.  相似文献

Zeatin and zeatin riboside were identified by full-scan gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in xylem sap of clonal apple rootstocks (M.27, M.9 and MM.106). These rootstocks exhibit a wide range of control over tree size when grafted to a common scion. The concentrations of zeatin and zeatin riboside were measured by GC-MS selected ion monitoring (SIM) in shoot xylem sap and root pressure exudate obtained from these rootstocks and from trees of Fiesta scion grafted onto the rootstocks. Zeatin was the predominant cytokinin in xylem sap from the dwarfing rootstocks, M.27 and M.9, while zeatin riboside was the predominant cytokinin in xylem sap from the more invigorating rootstock MM.106. Cytokinin concentrations (ng ml–1) in root pressure exudate and shoot xylem sap, (i.e. from above the graft union in composite trees), increased with increasing vigour of the rootstock, irrespective of whether the plants were non-grafted rootstocks, or were composite plants of Fiesta scion grafted onto the rootstocks. Cytokinin content (ng shoot–1) of shoot sap differed with rootstock; the more invigorating (MM.106) had greater amounts of cytokinins than the more dwarfing (M.9 and M.27) rootstocks. These results are discussed in relation to possible influences of roots on the growth of shoots via cytokinin supplies in the xylem sap.  相似文献
