The role of nitrification-denitrification in the loss of nitrogen from urea applied to puddled soils planted to rice and subjected to continuous and intermittent flooding was evaluated in three greenhouse pot studies. The loss of N via denitrification was estimated indirectly using the15N balance, after either first accounting for NH3 volatilization or by analyzing the15N balance immediately before and after the soil was dried and reflooded. When urea was broadcast and incorporated the loss of15N from the soil-plant systems depended on the soil, being about 20%–25% for the silt loams and only 10%–12% for the clay. Ammonia volatilization accounted for an average 20% of the N applied in the silt loam. Denitrification losses could not account for more than 10% of the applied N in any of the continuously flooded soil-plant systems under study and were most likely less than 5%. Intermittent flooding of soil planted to rice did not increase the loss of N. Denitrification appeared to be an important loss mechanism in continuously flooded fallow soils, accounting for the loss of approximately 40% of the applied15N. Loss of15N was not appreciably enhanced in fallow soils undergoing intermittent flooding. Apparently, nitrate formed in oxidized zones in the soil was readily denitrified in the absence of plant roots. Extensive loss (66%) of15N-labeled nitrate was obtained when 100 mg/pot of nitrate-N was applied to the surface of nonflooded soil prior to reflooding. This result suggests that rice plants may not compete effectively with denitrifiers if large quantities of nitrate were to accumulate during intermittent dry periods.  相似文献

Summary As part of a research program to determine the fate of N fertilizers applied to dryland sorghum in the semi-arid tropics,15N balance studies were conducted with various N sources in the greenhouse. Two American soils, Houston Black clay (Udic Pellustert) and Windthorst sandy loam (Udic Paleustalf), similar in properties to the Vertisol and Alfisol in the semi-arid tropics of India, were employed. Experiments were conducted with large pots containing 20 or 60 kg of soil which was subjected to several watering regimes. The15N not accounted for in the plant and soil was presumably lost. Losses of N on calcareous Houston Black clay were greatest for broadcast urea, 16%–28%. Amendment of broadcast urea with 2% phenyl phosphorodiamidate, a urease inhibitor, reduced N losses only slightly to 15%–20%. Point placement of urea at a 6 cm soil depth reduced losses to 1%–11%. Granule size had no effect on N loss from point-placed urea. Ammonia volatilization was apparently the main N loss mechanism, since N losses from sodium nitrate were less than 7%, except when the soil surface was waterlogged. N losses on the Windthorst soil averaged 30% from urea and 11% from ammonium nitrate. Amendment of urea with urea phosphate to form a 27% N and 13% P product reduced fertilizer N losses but did not increase grain yield on Windthorst soil. N losses were also less from ammonium nitrophosphate than from urea. Band and point placement of urea 6 cm below the soil surface were equally effective in reducing N loss on Houston Black clay. The findings give credence to the recommendation of deep band placement for urea in the semi-arid tropics.  相似文献

In an experiment with sorghum on a medium deep red soil (Udic Rhodustalf) at Patancheru, India, where15N-labeled urea was applied at different rates during the 1981 rainy season, the apparent (ARF) and isotope recovery fractions (15NRF) were appreciably different, particularly at lower rates of fertilizer application. The fertilizer rates were corrected for losses of fertilizer nitrogen, that were estimated from the differences in the amounts of15N recovered in the soil and the crop, and the known amounts of15N applied. Introducing these ‘effective’ fertilizer rates, the apparent discrepancy between ARF and15NRF could be explained if it were assumed that the15N immobilized in the organic soil fraction was not remineralized during the course of the growing season. In the difference method, the equivalent amount of nitrogen at natural abundance released in exchange for fertilizer nitrogen (5 atom % xs15N) immobilized in the organic nitrogen fraction is treated as ‘fertilizer nitrogen’, since no distinction is made between14N and15N. In the isotope-dilution method, the nitrogen at natural abundance mineralized during biological interchange is not considered fertilizer nitrogen, and therefore the assumed effective amount of fertilizer nitrogen available to the crop is less than in the difference method.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted in Niger using 15N-labeled fertilizers to assess the fate and efficiency of fertilizer N in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum [L.] R.Br.) production. Total plant uptake of fertilizer N was low in all cases (20%–37%), and losses were severe (25%–53%). The majority of N remaining in the soil was found in the 0- to 15-cm layer though some enrichment at lower depths was found when the N fertilizer was calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN). In a comparison of urea placement methods (band, broadcast, or point placement), no significant differences in 15N uptake or yield were noted though point placement did exacerbate 15N loss. The mechanism of N loss is believed to have been ammonia volatilization. Yields were similar whether urea or CAN was used, but 15N uptake from CAN was higher. A statistical model was developed relating millet yield and N response to midseason rainfall. In drought years, no N response was found, whereas in years of good rainfall a response was found of 15 kg grain for each kilogram of N applied (at 30 kg N ha-1 rate).  相似文献

Summary A field experiment on N turnover in rotations of groundnut, sorghum and pigeonpea crops was conducted in an Indian Alfisol during 1978–80.15N-labelled urea N was applied @ 40 kg ha–1 in 1978. In the first year, the groundnut utilized 19.5% of the applied labelled N, sorghum 25.5%, and pigeon pea 10.3%. More fertilizer N was removed through weeding than by crop uptake in sorghum and pigeon pea. The fertilizer N left behind in soil upto 40 cm depth was 44.4% in groundnut plots, 35.1% in sorghum plots and 40.1% in pigeon pea plots. The uptake in 1979 of the residual fertilizer N in the soil was 8.9% in sorghum, 8.3% in groundnut and 2.8% in pigeon pea. In 1980, it declined to less than 2% for pigeon pea and groundnut and to about 4% for sorghum.A balance sheet drawn at the end of each rotation showed that about 51.3% of the applied labelled N was accounted for in groundnut-sorghum-pigeon pea rotation, 70.9% in sorghumpigeon pea-groundnut, and 43.5% in pigeon pea-groundnut-sorghum.

In the recent past considerable attention is paid to minimize dependence on purchased inputs such as inorganic nitrogen fertilizer. Green manure in the form of flood-tolerant, stem-nodulatingSesbania rostrata andAeschynomene afraspera is an alternative N source for rice, which may also increase N use efficiency. Therefore research was conducted to determine the fate of N applied to lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the form ofSesbania rostrata andAeschynomene afraspera green manure and urea in two field experiments using15N labeled materials.15N in the soil and rice plant was determined, and15N balances established. Apparent N recoveries were determined by non-tracer method. 15N recoveries averaged 90 and 65% of N applied for green manure and urea treatments, respectively. High partial pressures of NH3 in the floodwater, and high pH probably resulted from urea application and favoured losses of N from the urea treatment. Results show that green manure N can supply a substantial proportion of the N requirements of lowland rice. Nitrogen released fromSesbania rostrata andAeschynomene afraspera green manure was in synchrony with the demand of the rice plant. The effect of combined application of green manure and urea on N losses from urea fertilizer were also investigated. Green manure reduced the N losses from15N labeled urea possibly due to a reduction in pH of the floodwater. Positive added N interactions (ANIs) were observed. At harvest, an average of 45 and 25% of N applied remained in the soil for green manure and urea, respectively.Contribution from IRRI, Los Baños, Philippines and Justus-Liebig-University, Giessen, GermanyContribution from IRRI, Los Baños, Philippines and Justus-Liebig-University, Giessen, Germany

Little is known about whether the high N losses from inorganic N fertilizers applied to lowland rice (Oryza sativa L.) are affected by the combined use of either legume green manure or residue with N fertilizers. Field experiments were conducted in 1986 and 1987 on an Andaqueptic Haplaquoll in the Philippines to determine the effect of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] cropping systems before rice on the fate and use efficiency of15N-labeled, urea and neem cake (Azadirachta indica Juss.) coated urea (NCU) applied to the subsequent transplanted lowland rice crop. The pre-rice cropping systems were fallow, cowpea incorporated at the flowering stage as a green manure, and cowpea grown to maturity with subsequent incorporation of residue remaining after grain and pod removal. The incorporated green manure contained 70 and 67 kg N ha−1 in 1986 and 1987, respectively. The incorporated residue contained 54 and 49 kg N ha−1 in 1986 and 1987, respectively. The unrecovered15N in the15N balances for 58 kg N ha−1 applied as urea or NCU ranged from 23 to 34% but was not affected by pre-rice cropping system. The partial pressure of ammoniapNH3, and floodwater (nitrate + nitrite)-N following application of 29 kg N ha−1 as urea or NCU to 0.05-m-deep floodwater at 14 days after transplanting was not affected by pre-rice cropping system. In plots not fertilized with urea or NCU, green manure contributed an extra 12 and 26 kg N ha−1, to mature rice plants in 1986 and 1987, respectively. The corresponding contributions from residue were 19 and 23 kg N ha−1, respectively. Coating urea with 0.2g neem cake per g urea had no effect on loss of urea-N in either year; however, it significantly increased grain yield (0.4 Mg ha−1) and total plant N (11 kg ha−1) in 1987 but not in 1986.  相似文献

Summary The fate of 100 kg N ha–1 applied as15N-urea and its modified forms was followed in 4 successive field-grown wetland rice crops in a vertisol. The first wet season crop recovered about 27 to 36.6% of the applied N depending upon the N source. In subsequent seasons the average uptake was very small and it gradually decreased from 1.4 to 0.5 kg N ha–1 although about 18 to 20, 12 to 17 and 14 to 18 kg ha–1 residual fertilizer N was available in the root zone after harvest of first, second and third crops, respectively. The average uptake of the residual fertilizer N was only 7.6% in the second crop and it decreased to 4.5% in the third and to 3.2% in the fourth crop although all these crops were adequately fertilized with unlabelled urea. The basal application of neem coated urea was more effective in controlling the leaching loss of labelled NH4+NO3–N than split application of uncoated urea. In the first 3 seasons in which15N was detectable, the loss of fertilizer N through leaching as NH4+NO3–N amounted to 0.5 kg ha–1 from neem-coated urea, 1.5 kg from split urea and 4.1 kg from coal tar-coated urea. At the end of 4 crops, most of the labelled fertilizer N (about 69% on average) was located in the upper 0–20 cm soil layer showing very little movement beyond this depth. In the profile sampled upto 60 cm depth, totally about 13.8 kg labelled fertilizer N ha–1 from neem-coated urea, 12.7 kg from coal-tar coated urea, and 11.8 kg from split urea were recovered. The average recovery of labelled urea-N in crops and soil during the entire experimental period ranged between 42 and 51%. After correcting for leaching losses, the remaining 47 to 56% appeared to have been lost through ammonia volatilization and denitrification.  相似文献

An experiment with 15N-labelled fertilizer was superimposed on the Rothamsted Hoosfield Spring Barley Experiment, started in 1852. Labelled 15NH4 15NO3 was applied in spring at (nominal) rates of 0, 48, 96 and 144 kg N ha-1. The labelled fertilizer was applied to microplots located within four treatments of the original experiment: that receiving farmyard manure (FYM) annually, that receiving inorganic nutrients (PK) annually and to two that were deficient in nutrients: applications were made in two successive years, but to different areas within these original treatments. Maximum yields in 1986 (7.1 t grain ha-1) were a little greater than in 1987. In 1987, microplots on the FYM and PK treatments gave similar yields, provided enough fertilizer N was applied, but in 1986 yields on the PK treatment were always less than those on the FYM treatment, no matter how much fertilizer N was applied. In plots with adequate crop nutrients, about 51% of the labelled N was present in above-ground crop and weed at harvest, about 30% remained in the top 70 cm of soil (mostly in the 0–23 cm layer) and about 19% was unaccounted for, all irrespective of the rate of N application and of the quantity of inorganic N in the soil at the time of application. Less than 4% of the added fertilizer N was present in inorganic form in the soil at harvest, confirming results from comparable experiments with autumn-sown cereals in south-east England. Thus, in this experiment there is no evidence that a spring-sown cereal is more likely to leave unused fertilizer in the soil than an autumn-sown one. With trace applications (ca. 2 kg N ha-1) more labelled N was retained in the soil and less was in the above-ground crop. Where P and K were deficient, yields were depressed, a smaller proportion of the labelled fertilizer N was present in the above-ground crop at harvest and more remained in the soil.Although the percentage uptake of labelled N was similar across the range of fertilizer N applications, the uptake of total N fell off at the higher N rates, particularly on the FYM treatment. This was reflected in the appearance of a negative Added Nitrogen Interaction (ANI) at the highest rate of application. Fertilizer N blocked the uptake of soil N, particularly from below 23 cm, once the capacity of the crop to take up N was exceeded. Denitrification and leaching were almost certainly insufficient to account for the 19% loss of spring-added N across the whole range of N applications and other loss processes must also have contributed.  相似文献

15N labelled (NH4)2SO4 was applied to barley at 5 g N m−2 (50 kg N ha−1) in microplots at sowing to study the timing of the N losses and the contribution of soil and fertilizer N to the plant. Water treatments included rainfed and irrigation at 45–50 mm deficit beginning in the spring. Recovery of15N in the plant increased to a maximum of about 20% within 91 days after sowing (DAS 91) and then remained constant. Approximately 16% (0.8 g N m−2) of the fertilizer was in the stem and leaves at DAS 91 and this N was subsequently redistributed to the head. At maturity, approximately 75% of the15N assimilated by the tops was recovered in the grain. Soil N contributed 3.6 g N m−2 to the head; 2.2 g N m−2 was remobilized from the stem and leaves, and the balance, approximately 1.4 g N m−2, was taken up from the soil between DAS 69 to 91. Effects of irrigation treatments on N accumulation were not significant. Residual15N fertilizer in the soil decreased with time from sowing, and at maturity 40% of the applied N was recovered in the surface 0.15 m.15N movement to depth was limited and less than 5% of the fertilizer was recovered below 0.15 m. Irrigation had no effect on the15N recovery at depth. Total recovery of the15N varied between 60 and 67% and implies that 33–40% was lost from the soil-plant system. The total recovery in the soil and plant was not affected by time or irrigation in the interval DAS 39 to 134. Losses occurred before DAS 39 when crop uptake of N was small and soil mineral N content was high. There was an apparent loss of 1.9 g fertilizer N m−2 (i.e. 38% of that applied) between DAS 1 and 15. This loss occurred before crop emergence when rainfall provided conditions suitable for denitrification.  相似文献

Summary The symbiotic association of the water fernAzolla with the blue-green algaAnabaena azollae can fix 30–60 kg N ha–1 per rice cropping season. The value of this fixed N for rice production, however, is only realized once the N is released from theAzolla biomass and taken up by the rice plants. The availability of N applied asAzolla or as urea was measured in field experiments by two15N methods. In the first,Azolla caroliniana (Willd.) was labelled with15N in nutrient solution and incorporated into the soil at a rate of 144 kg N ha–1. The recovery ofAzolla-N in the above ground parts of rice [Oryza sativa (L) cv. Nucleoryza] was found to be 32% vs. 26% for urea applied at a rate of 100 kg N/ha; there was no significant difference in recovery. In the second, 100 kg N/ha of15N-urea was applied separately or in combination with either 250 or 330 kg N ha–1 of unlabelledAzolla. At the higher rate, the recovery ofAzolla-N was significantly greater than that of urea. There was a significant interaction when both N sources were applied together, which resulted in a greater recovery of N from each source in comparison to that source applied separately. Increasing the combined urea andAzolla application rate from 350 kg N ha–1 to 430 kg N ha–1 increased the N yield but had no effect on the dry matter yield of rice plants. The additional N taken up at the higher level of N application accumulated to a greater extent in the straw compared to the panicles. Since no assumptions need to be made about the contribution of soil N in the method using15N-labelledAzolla, this method is preferable to the15N dilution technique for assessing the availability ofAzolla-N to rice. Pot trials usingAzolla stored at –20°C or following oven-drying showed that both treatments decreased the recovery of N by one third in comparison to freshAzolla.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to determine the effects of the application of 13C (1.256 atom%) and 15N (1.098 atom%) dual-labeled maize residue compost (MRC) on the nitrogen and carbon uptake by radish, komatsuna, and chingensai as compared with the effect of inorganic fertilizer (IF). The vegetables were grown over three consecutive growing seasons over 4 months; compost was applied at the rate of 24 g kg–1 soil. Nonlabeled nitrogen fertilizer was applied to the compost treatments in the second and third crops to compare the effects of blends of compost with N fertilizer to fertilizer alone. The N uptake and yield of vegetables were significantly higher with the recommended inorganic N treatment. The vegetables took up significantly (P < 0.05) lower amounts of N from MRC than from IFs during the three cultivations. The values of the N uptake derived by fertilizer application to the plant exhibited significant differences among different vegetables. Nitrogen recovered by komatsuna and chingensai from MRC was 7.3 (6.6%), 2.7 (1.8%), and 2.3, (1.7%) in the first, second, and third crops, respectively. Radish, komatsuna, and chingensai recovered significant amounts of C from MRC in the first and second crops, with negligible C recovery in the third crop. The initial loss of fertilizer C in soil at the first crop indicates that the microbial decomposition decoupled substantial amounts of 13C/15N-labeled compounds early in plant development, thus giving the microorganisms a preemptive competitive advantage in the acquisition of easily available 13C/15N-labeled substrates. It is concluded that a combination of compost and inorganic N did not supply sufficient plant-available N to increase vegetables yields or N uptake over those of fertilizer alone. The data suggested that higher productivity of vegetables might be achieved after the accumulation of a certain amount of residual compost N.  相似文献

In view of the recently generated interest in Azolla and the high cost of N fertilizers, this field study was aimed at measuring the availability of Azolla-N applied in two split application in comparison to urea-N. Azolla was cultivated and labelled with 15N isotope in the field. A total of about 60 kg N ha-1 was applied as Azolla, urea or Azolla and urea in combination, in two equal splits at transplanting and at maximum tillering, i.e. 30 days after transplanting (30 DAT).The recovery by the crop of Azolla-N applied at 30 DAT was significantly higher than that applied at transplanting, viz. 30.2% and 20.2%, respectively. The recoveries of urea-N applied at the same stages were similarly low, viz. 22.5% at transplanting and 38.6% at 30 DAT. Total recoveries of fertilizer N at the time of harvest were 26.8% from Azolla, 30.7% from urea applied in the same two splits and 49.1% from urea applied in locally recommended three splits. Recoveries of labelled Azolla-N in succeeding rice crop were twice higher than those of labelled urea-N. The recoveries ranged from 1.9 to 2.1% from urea-N and 4.0 to 4.9% from Azolla-N. There were no differences in residual 15N recovery in the succeeding crop between Azolla and urea either applied at transplanting or at 30 DAT.  相似文献

Erratic rainfall in rainfed lowlands and inadequate water supply in irrigated lowlands can results in alternate soil drying and flooding during a rice (Oryza sativa L.) cropping period. Effects of alternate soil drying and flooding on N loss by nitrification-denitrification have been inconsistent in previous field research. To determine the effects of water deficit and urea timing on soil NO3 and NH4, floodwater NO3, and N loss from added 15N-labeled urea, a field experiment was conducted for 2 yr on an Andaqueptic Haplaquoll in the Philippines. Water regimes were continuously flooded, not irrigated from 15 to 35 d after transplanting (DT), or not irrigated from 41 to 63 DT. The nitrogen treatments in factorial combination with water regimes were no applied N and 80 kg urea-N ha–1, either applied half basally and half at 37 DT or half at 11 DT and half at 65 DT. Water deficit at 15 to 35 DT and 41 to 63 DT, compared with continuous soil flooding, significantly reduced extractable NH4 in the top 30-cm soil layer and resulted in significant but small (<1.0 kg N ha–1) soil NO3 accumulations. Soil NO3, which accumulated during the water deficit, rapidly disappeared after reflooding. Water deficit at 15 to 35 DT, unlike that at 41 to 63 DT, increased the gaseous loss of added urea N as determined from unrecovered 15N in 15N balances. The results indicate that application of urea to young rice in saturated or flooded soil results in large, rapid losses of N (mean = 35% of applied N), presumably by NH3 volatilization. Subsequent soil drying and flooding during the vegetative growth phase can result in additional N loss (mean = 14% of applied N), presumably by nitrification-denitrification. This additional N loss due to soil drying and flooding decreases with increasing crop age, apparently because of increased competition by rice with soil microorganisms for NH4 and NO3.  相似文献

Summary Six pasture grasses,Paspalum notatum cv batatais,P. notatum cv pensacola,Brachiaria radicans, B. ruziziensis, B. decumbens andB. humidicola, were grown in concrete cylinders (60 cm diameter) in the field for 31 months. The soil was amended with either a single addition of15N labelled organic matter or frequent small (2 kg N. ha–1) additions of15N enriched (NH4)2SO4. In the labelled fertilizer treatment soil analysis revealed that there was a very drastic change in15N enrichment in plant-available nitrogen (NO 3 +NH 4 + ) with depth. The different grass cultivars recovered different quantities of applied labelled N, and evidence was obtained to suggest that the roots exploited the soil to different depths thus obtaining different15N enrichments in soil derived N. This invalidated the application of the isotope dilution technique to estimate the contribution of nitrogen fixation to the grass cultivars in this treatment. In the labelled organic matter treatment the15N label in the plant-available N declined at a decreasing rate during the experiment until in the last 12 months the decrease was only from 0.274 to 0.222 atom % excess. There was little change in15N enrichment of available N with depth, hence it was concluded that although the grasses recovered different quantities of labelled N, they all obtained virtually the same15N enrichment in soil derived N. Data from the final harvests of this treatment indicated thatB. humidicola andB. decumbens obtained 30 and 40% respectively of their nitrogen from N2 fixation amounting to an input of 30 and 45 kg N.ha–1 year–1 respectively.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) export from soils to streams and groundwater under the intensifying cropping schemes of the Pampas is modest compared to intensively cultivated basins of Europe and North America; however, a slow N enrichment of water resources has been suggested. We (1) analyzed the fate of fertilizer N and (2) evaluated the contribution of fertilizer and soil organic matter (SOM) to N leaching under the typical cropping conditions of the Pampas. Fertilizer N was applied as 15N-labeled ammonium sulfate to corn (in a corn/soybean rotation) sown under zero tillage in filled-in lysimeters containing two soils of different texture representative of the Pampean region (52 and 78 kg N ha-1, added to the silt loam and sandy loam soil, respectively). Total fertilizer recovery at corn harvest averaged 84 and 64% for the silt loam and sandy loam lysimeters, respectively. Most fertilizer N was removed with plant biomass (39%) or remained immobilized in the soil (29 and 15%, for the silt loam and sandy loam soil, respectively) whereas its loss through drainage was negligible (<0.01%). We presume that the unaccounted fertilizer N losses were related to volatilization and denitrification. Throughout the corn growing season, subsequent fallow and soybean crop, which took place during an exceptionally dry period, the fertilizer N immobilized in the organic pool remained stable, and N leaching was scarce (7.5 kg N ha-1), similar at both soils, and had a low contribution of fertilizer N (0–3.5%), implying that >96% of the leached N was derived from SOM mineralization. The inherent high SOM of Pampean soils and the favorable climatic conditions are likely to propitiate year-round production of nitrate, favoring its participation in crop nutrition and leaching. The presence of 15N in drainage water, however, suggests that fertilizer N leaching could become significant in situations with higher fertilization rates or more rainy seasons.  相似文献

Urea fertilizer labelled with 15N (2.5 atom %) was applied to a 20 year old Sitka spruce stand on a peaty gley at a rate equivalent to 160 kg N ha−1. The application of urea resulted in increased biomass and N concentration of needles and enhanced development of the crown. Differences in N concentrations of the amended trees were also observed for new wood and bark. Analysis of 15N in tree biomass showed a continued influence of fertilizer N in the second growing season following urea application. The overall recovery of fertilizer N in the trees was estimated to be about 10%.  相似文献

A field study was conducted on a clay soil (Andaqueptic Haplaquoll) in the Philippines to directly measure the evolution of (N2+N2O)−15N from 98 atom %15N-labeled urea broadcast at 29 kg N ha−1 into 0.05-m-deep floodwater at 15 days after transplanting (DT) rice. The flux of (N2+N2O)−15N during the 19 days following urea application never exceeded 28 g N ha−1 day−1. The total recovery of (N2+N2O)−15N evolved from the field was only 0.51% of the applied N, whereas total gaseous15N loss estimated from unrecovered15N in the15N balance was 41% of the applied N. Floodwater (nitrate+nitrite)−N in the 5 days following urea application never exceeded 0.14 g N m−3 or 0.3% of the applied N. Prior cropping of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] to flowering with subsequent incorporation of the green manure (dry matter=2.5 Mg ha−1, C/N=15) at 15 days before rice transplanting had no effect on fate of urea applied to rice at 15 DT. The recovery of (N2+N2O)−15N and total15N loss during the 19 days following urea application were 0.46 and 40%, respectively. Direct recovery of evolved (N2+N2O)−15N and total15N loss from 27 kg applied nitrate-N ha−1 were 20% and 53% during the same 19-day period. The failure of directly-recovered (N2+N2O)−15N to match total15N loss from added nitrate-15N might be due to entrapment of denitrification end products in soil or transport of gaseous end products to the atmosphere through rice plants. The rapid conversion of added nitrate-N to (N2+N2O)−N, the apparently sufficient water soluble soil organic C for denitrification (101 μg C g−1 in the top 0.15-m soil layer), and the low floodwater nitrate following urea application suggested that denitrification loss from urea was controlled by supply of nitrate rather than by availability of organic C.  相似文献
