Mysella narchii sp. nov. is described from the material collected in shallow-waters of Admiralty Bay at King George Island, South Shetlands, Antarctica. The species is characterized by shell features, biology and functional anatomy. The main shell features distinguishing M. narchii sp. nov. from all other Antarctic, Subantarctic and Magellanic Mysella spp. are provided, as are anatomical characteristics that separate this new species from M. charcoti (Lamy, 1906), its most similar congener and the first Antarctic species studied in its morpho-functional aspects. M. narchii sp. nov. is an infaunal, free-living, predominantly deposit-feeding bivalve; its creeping sole and the secretion of byssal threads allow it to crawl vertically and live sporadically on firm substrata.  相似文献

This paper reports the production, purification, and biological assay of a new mycobactin fromMycobacterium paratuberculosis. This new mycobactin, designated mycobactin J, is produced by a strain ofM. paratuberculosis adapted to growth on synthetic medium without exogenous mycobactin. Mycobactin J reduces the incubation period ofM. paratuberculosis in complex medium by 3 weeks when compared with medium containing mycobactin P, and a higher proportion of the organisms, in inocula from infected tissues or fecal specimens, produce colonies. Also, some strains ofM. paratuberculosis will grow on medium containing mycobactin J that will not grow on medium containing mycobactin P.  相似文献

Plants of Lloyd George and Seedling M raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) were found in eastern Scotland infected with raspberry ringspot (RRV), a virus to which these varieties were previously considered immune. Most RRV isolates from affected plants caused milder symptoms in herbaceous test plants than did the type isolates of the common Scottish and English strains. In graft-transmission tests the Lloyd George strain of RRV infected all the raspberry cultivars tested, including those immune to the common Scottish strain. No consistent differences were found between isolates of the two strains in in vitro properties or serological behaviour. Both strains were transmitted in seed of Stellaria media and in soil containing Longidorus elongatus. Possible reasons why the new strain is uncommon in Scotland are discussed.  相似文献

The concentrations of the elements copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) in hair of caged (in Maryland) and freeranging (in Puerto Rico) rhesus monkey populations were determined. Significant chronological age-related decreases were evident for the trace elements Mn and Zn in both populations (P<0.01) and for Cu and Fe in free-ranging monkeys (P<0.005). The only overall gender difference was higher hair Mn concentration in freeranging males than in females (P<0.03). There were no significant differences in hair Cu, Fe, or Mn related to pregnancy status. Hair Zn was lower in samples from pregnant than from nonpregnant monkeys from the caged monkeys (P≤0.05), but did not differe in the freeranging monkeys. Comparison of the two populations revealed that hair Zn levels were significantly higher in caged vs free-ranging animals (P<0.001). We attribute this higher hair Zn in the caged monkeys to contact and ingestion of Zn from their galvanized enclosures. Hair iron levels were significantly higher (P<0.001) in free-ranging monkeys, possibly as a result of Fe-rich soil ingestion from their environment. These data support continued investigation of the use of hair as an indicator of the exposure of large groups or populations to potentially high levels of specific minerals, and the use of nonhuman primates as models for the study of trace element deficiency and/or toxicity in humans. Prelliminary reports of portions of these data were presented at the 69th Annual Meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, April 1982, New Orleans, LA (B. M. Marriott, J. C. Smith, R. Jacobs, A. O. Jones, M. J. Kessler, and R. Rawlins,Fed. Proc. 41:770, [1982]) and in a symposium at the 6th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Primatologists, 1983, East Lansing, MI (B. Marriott, J. C. Smith, R. Jacobs, A. O. Lee Jones, R. An examination of a series of collections from the coast of Natal, South Africa, has revealed the presence of two species of Martensia C. Hering nom. cons: M. elegans C. Hering 1841, the type species, and an undescribed species, M. natalensis sp. nov. The two are similar in gross morphology, with both having the network arranged in a single band, and with reproductive thalli of M. elegans usually larger and more robust than those of M. natalensis. Molecular studies based on rbcL sequence analyses place the two in separate, strongly supported clades. The first assemblage occurs primarily in the Indo‐West Pacific Ocean, and the second is widely distributed in tropical and warm‐temperate waters. Criteria that have been used in the past for separating the two, namely, the number and shape of the blades, the presence of a single‐ versus a multiple‐banded network, and blade margins entire or toothed, were determined to be unreliable. Although the examination of additional species is required, the morphology and position of procarps and cystocarps, whether at or near the corners of the longitudinal lamellae and the cross‐connecting strands or along the lobed, membranous edges of the longitudinal lamellae or on the thallus margins, may prove to be diagnostic at the subgenus level. We recognize subg. Martensia, including the type of Martensia: M. elegans and subg. Mesotrema (J. Agardh) De Toni based on Martensia pavonia (J. Agardh) J. Agardh.  相似文献
