Studies of geographical variation in animal signals generally focus on breeding-season behaviour but, in many species, signalling persists throughout the year. In passerine birds, patterns of variation in the nonbreeding season might provide opportunities for vocal learning that have been neglected by a historic focus on breeding-season behaviour. This study provides the first example of dialect variation outside of the breeding season. Quantitative analysis of acoustic similarity showed discrete differences between the songs of bronzed cowbirds, Molothrus aeneus, in four winter flocks. Most songs produced by members of a given flock were classified as belonging to the same dialect. Songs from one of the four winter dialects were indistinguishable from songs recorded in the breeding season in the same region. Depending on migratory patterns, dialects in one season may be a consequence of dialects in the other season, or the two seasonal patterns may be the result of independent social or evolutionary forces. Because the nonbreeding season is an important period of vocal learning in some bird species, winter dialects might limit the range of signals available for individuals to learn to produce. A comprehensive understanding of spatiotemporal ecology is needed to develop conservation strategies for declining species. The king rail (Rallus elegans) is a secretive marsh bird whose range historically extended across the eastern United States. Inland migratory populations have been greatly reduced with most remaining populations inhabiting the coastal margins. Our objectives were to determine the migratory status of breeding king rails on the mid‐Atlantic coast and to characterize home range size, seasonal patterns of movement, and habitat use. Using radiotelemetry, we tracked individual king rails among seasons, and established that at least a segment of this breeding population is resident. Mean (±SE) home range size was 19.8 ± 5.0 ha (95% kernel density) or 2.5 ± 0.9 (50% kernel density). We detected seasonal variation and sex differences in home range size and habitat use. In the nonbreeding season, resident male home ranges coincided essentially with their breeding territories. Overwintering males were more likely than females to be found in natural emergent marsh with a greater area of open water. Females tended to have larger home ranges than males during the nonbreeding season. We report for the first time the use of wooded natural marsh by overwintering females. Brood‐rearing king rails led their young considerable distances away from their nests (average maximum distance: ~600 ± 200 m) and used both wooded natural and impounded marsh. King rails moved between natural marsh and managed impoundments during all life stages, but the proximity of these habitat types particularly benefitted brood‐rearing parents seeking foraging areas with shallower water in proximity to cover. Our results demonstrate the importance of interspersion of habitat types to support resident breeders. Summer draining of impounded wetlands that are seasonally flooded for wintering waterfowl allows regrowth of vegetation and provides additional habitat at a critical time for wading birds.  相似文献

During the breeding season, male green anole lizards extend a throat fan (dewlap) in courtship. This behavior is facilitated by testosterone (T). Females extend a much smaller dewlap less often, even with the same dose of T. During the nonbreeding season when T is low, dewlap extension is reduced. To determine if parallels exist between structure and function, we investigated neuron soma size and density in the preoptic area (POA) and ventromedial nucleus of the amygdala (AMY), which are involved in the display behavior, in breeding and nonbreeding males and females. Cells from breeding animals were larger than cells from nonbreeding animals, but they were not sexually dimorphic. No significant effects existed in neuron density. This experiment indicates that portions of the anole forebrain important for sexual behavior are plastic and might be influenced by seasonal changes in steroid hormones. To investigate whether T can reverse the seasonal difference in soma size in both sexes, gonadectomized nonbreeding anoles were implanted with an empty or T propionate-filled capsule; animals were also tested for male-typical courtship behavior. Males and females treated with T had higher rates of dewlap extension, but across treatment groups these rates were greater in males. Neuron soma size in the POA and AMY was larger in males than females, but no effects of treatment were detected. Taken together, the results indicate that T can stimulate behavior in the nonbreeding season and suggest that a dissociation exists between the regulation of the courtship display and soma size of relevant brain regions.  相似文献

The basic mating system of the prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster,consists of monogamous breeding units comprised of one reproductivefemale and male and their offspring. Most surviving young remainat the natal nest; those that do so normally remain non-reproductive.Of 281 total breeding units monitored in free-living populations50.2% were monogamous. Twenty-seven percent consisted of a singlereproductive female that apparently has lost her mate. Theremaining22.8% of the breeding units included two or more unrelated adultsmales and/or females (=‘complex’ breeding units).In general, monogamy was the predominant type of breeding unitat the highest (>100 adults/ha) as well as at low (>20adults/ha) population densities. There was no consistent relationshipbetween the number of residents of a breeding unit and populationdensity. Significantly more young females remaining at the natalnest became reproductive at high rather than at low populationdensities (77.1 and 17.6%, respectively). Monogamy was prevalentduring the winter as well as during the other seasons; however,there were significantly more complex breeding units duringthe winter than during other seasons. Breeding unit size wassignificantly larger during the winter than at other seasons.There was no difference in the proportions of breeding unittypes or the number of residents of a breeding unit during breedingand nonbreeding seasons. Increased breeding unit size appearsrelated to low temperatures and associated physiological stressesduring the winter rather than to population density.  相似文献

We determined whether seasonal differences exist in the amount of time meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, self-groom when they encounter the scents of conspecifics. To do so, we used voles that were born and reared under long photoperiod (LP) and short photoperiod (SP). LP voles represent those found in free-living populations during the spring and summer breeding season, whereas SP voles characterize those found in free-living populations during the fall and winter nonbreeding season. Experiment 1 showed that LP male and female voles self-groomed more in response to odors of LP opposite-sex conspecifics as compared to those of other LP and SP conspecifics, suggesting that they may be self-grooming to signal sexual interest or excitement to potential mates. Experiment 2 demonstrated that SP males self-groomed more in response to scents of LP female voles and those of SP males as compared to scents of LP males and SP females, whereas SP females spent similar amounts of time self-grooming in response to scents of LP males, LP females, SP females, and SP males. These seasonal differences in self-grooming may reflect differences in the messages produced by groomers when they broadcast their odors as well as differences in the meaning of such odors to opposite-sex conspecifics. Alternatively, these data may be associated with seasonal differences in sexual motivation of the groomers when exposed to scents of particular conspecifics.  相似文献

The within-stallion repeatability and effect of season on sperm movement characteristics, determined by computer-aided sperm analysis (CASA), were compared with those of other seminal characteristics. The computer-aided determinations of sperm movement were more repeatable than the seminal characteristics of gel-free volume and sperm cell concentration based on coefficients of variation obtained from the analysis of multiple ejaculates from the same stallions. A significant (P<0.05) seasonal effect on the computer-aided movement characteristic of mean sperm linearity was observed, with a reduction in sperm linearity in the winter months. The percentage of motile and progressively motile cells and mean sperm velocity determined by CASA also tended to be lower in the winter months. These changes in sperm movement characteristics paralleled changes in other seminal characteristics. The use of CASA may have value in the potential fertility evaluation of a stallion in that it can provide relatively precise quantification of sperm movement characteristics from the evaluation of only a few ejaculates. Some CASA derived sperm movement characteristics may be lower during the physiological nonbreeding season than during the breeding season.  相似文献

Rhesus monkeys housed in an outdoor environment are seasonal breeders, with ovulations and concomitant sexual behavior limited to the fall and winter months. To determine if there is a seasonal difference in the capacity of physiological levels of estradiol (E2) to induce sexual behavior in ovariectomized rhesus monkeys housed outdoors, subjects living in a social group were treated with subcutaneous E2 implants in a counter-balanced design during the nonbreeding season (May-July) and during the breeding season (September-November). Serum E2 levels were monitored by obtaining blood samples twice a week. Three levels of E2 were studied: baseline (less than 30 pg/ml), follicular (100 pg/ml), and periovulatory (200 pg/ml). Two of five adult males in the group were injected with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) twice a week to insure that males with high testosterone levels were present during each season. Focal observations of behavior of 15 minutes' duration on each subject were conducted 5 days per week, with frequencies and durations of social, sexual, and solitary behaviors recorded. Concomitant 2-h group scans were made to record all occurrences of mounting behavior. Neither heterosexual serial mounting nor seminal plugs were ever observed in E2-treated females during the summer months. In contrast, copulation and seminal plugs were observed in subjects at both treatment levels during the fall. While E2-treated females engaged in homosexual mounting behavior during both summer and fall, E2 treatment resulted in heterosexual copulation only during the fall. Changes in patterns of social behavior paralleled changes in sexual behavior and were significantly affected by treatment and season, with more male-female interactions during the fall months.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The green anole lizard exhibits seasonal courtship behavior that is sexually dimorphic. This courtship consists of the extension of a bright red throat fan (dewlap) associated with head-bobbing display behavior. While males extend their dewlaps in aggressive encounters as well as in courtship, females use their considerably smaller dewlaps much less frequently and mainly in agonistic encounters. In parallel, a number of components of the neuromuscular system controlling dewlap extension are greater in males than in females during the breeding season, including dewlap motoneuron soma size and muscle fiber size and number. These features do not seem to change substantially in adulthood, despite a dramatic decline in dewlap use during the nonbreeding season. We explored the morphology of this neuromuscular system in more detail in the present experiment in males and females during both the breeding and nonbreeding seasons. Fiber and whole muscle length (approximately perpendicular to the fibers) were measured. Acetylcholinesterase histochemistry was used to visualize neuromuscular junctions (NMJs), and the surface area and density of NMJs were assessed for each animal. During the breeding season, NMJ size was larger in males than in females, but NMJ density along each fiber was equivalent between the sexes. In addition, whole muscle length and that of individual muscle fibers, was larger in males than in females. However, when corrected for body size, the sex difference in muscle fiber length disappeared. In the nonbreeding season, the sexual dimorphisms were maintained, suggesting that these features do not change substantially due to differences in circulating testosterone or a difference in use across seasons. Overall, these results are consistent with the idea that enhanced NMJ size is a relatively stable feature of the dewlap muscle in adulthood that either facilitates or is a consequence of using a larger muscle to extend a bigger dewlap in males compared to females.  相似文献

As climate change continues to alter temperature and precipitation patterns, numerous species have declined. However, populations of some species that show responses to climate change, such as eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis), have increased or remained stable nationwide. To understand how species are adapting to climate change, we estimated demographic parameters and their responses to climatic variability, using nesting and banding-recapture data between 2003 and 2018 in a northeastern Arkansas eastern bluebird population. Increasing variability in precipitation in the nonbreeding season negatively affected hatchability. Hatching success was negatively affected by increasing variability in maximum temperatures and the number of hot days during the breeding season, but positively affected by increasing winter snow depth. Adult survival was positively affected by increasing snow depth and variability in the number of hot days during the breeding season, but negatively affected by increasing variability in nonbreeding season temperatures. Our results demonstrate that for this study population, annual breeding parameters, though canalized against interannual environmental variation, were affected by seasonal climatic variability. Although climate change may benefit bluebird survival due to increasing variability in winter temperatures and the number of hot days, climatic variability negatively affected breeding parameters and is expected to increase. Because breeding parameters are typically the drivers of population growth rate in short-lived species, these results raise concern for the future of this population of eastern bluebirds.  相似文献

The status signaling hypothesis (SSH) was devised primarilyto explain the adaptive significance of avian ornamental colorationduring the nonbreeding season. It proposes that conspicuousmale plumage serves as an honest signal of social status withina population of birds. However, to date this hypothesis hasbeen well tested and supported for only one type of plumage coloration, melanin-based coloration. Carotenoid-based pigmentationis known to positively reveal male health and condition duringmolt in a variety of species, but it is poorly understood whetherthis ornament type can also function as a status signal duringthe winter. We tested the SSH in male house finches (Carpodacusmexicanus) by manipulating the carotenoid-based plumage brightnessof first-year males and then pairing unfamiliar birds of differingcoloration in a series of dominance trials in captivity. Manipulated plumage color was unrelated to win/loss outcome in these trials.Similarly, the natural pigmentation of males was a poor predictorof winter dominance; as in other studies with this species,we found only a weak tendency for naturally drab males to dominatenaturally bright males. These results suggest that carotenoid-basedcoloration is not a reliable indicator of social status inmale house finches during the nonbreeding season. In fact, carotenoid-based coloration may function only in mate choice in this species,and it may be retained throughout the year either because timeconstraints preclude a second plumage molt or because it aidsin pair formation that begins in late winter.  相似文献

Migratory bird populations may be limited during one or more seasons, and thus at one or more places, but there is a dearth of empirical examples of this possibility. We analyse seasonal survival in a migratory shellfish‐eating shorebird (red knot Calidris canutus islandica) during a series of years of intense food limitation on the nonbreeding grounds (due to overfishing of shellfish stocks), followed by a relaxation period when destructive harvesting had stopped and food stocks for red knots recovered. For the estimation of seasonal survival from the 15 yr‐long near‐continuous capture–resight dataset, we introduce a ‘rolling window’ approach for data exploration, followed by selection of the best season definition. The average annual apparent survival over all the years was 0.81 yr?1. During the limitation period, survival probability of adult red knots was low in winter (0.78 yr?1), but this was compensated by high survival in summer (0.91 yr?1). During the relaxation period survival rate levelled out with a winter value of 0.81 yr?1 and a summer survival of 0.82 yr?1. The fact that during the cockle‐dredging period the dip in survival in winter was completely compensated by higher survival later in the annual cycle suggests sequential density dependence. We conclude that seasonal compensation in local survival (in concert with movements to areas apparently below carrying capacity) allowed the islandica population as a whole to cope, in 1998–2003, with the loss of half of the suitable feeding habitat in part of the nonbreeding range, the western Dutch Wadden Sea. As a more general point, we see no reason why inter‐seasonal density dependence should not be ubiquitous in wildlife populations, though its limits and magnitude will depend on the specific ecological contexts. We elaborate the possibility that with time, and in stable environments, seasonal mortality evolves so that differences in mortality rates between seasons would become erased.  相似文献

Evolutionary ecologists have devoted substantial attention to understanding which factors dictate processes of mortality within populations. Our goal was to understand the dynamics of natural selection on two performance traits (bite force and sprint speed) and associated morphological variables. We first quantified performance and morphology for a sample of marked tree lizards (Urosaurus ornatus) at the middle of the breeding season. We then sampled the same population in the nonbreeding season to determine which of the original lizards survived, and we also remeasured morphological and performance variables for surviving lizards. We found evidence for directional selection favoring fast sprinters in male lizards, but also a nonsignificant stabilizing trend that disfavored the very fastest lizards. However, we also detected substantial seasonal plasticity in bite force and head width, suggesting that an analysis of selection on only preselection (breeding season) values may be overly simplistic. Urosaurus males and females with low bite forces (and narrow heads) in the breeding season generally increased their bite forces and head widths during the nonbreeding season. In contrast, lizards that were initially strong biters in the breeding season diminished in head width and declined dramatically in bite force (up to about 35%). We suggest that seasonal plasticity could act as a retarding force for selection on performance, and could dampen seasonal and year-to-year fluctuations in selective pressures. We argue that this phenomenon may be particularly likely for performance traits important for social interactions related to breeding, such as bite force.  相似文献

Abstract: Factors influencing patterns of space use by pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) are poorly understood. We studied diurnal space use by adult pygmy rabbits during multiple breeding and nonbreeding seasons at 3 sites in the Lemhi Valley, Idaho, USA, during 2004–2005. Pygmy rabbits used larger areas than predicted by allometric models and documented by some previous investigations. Sex and season strongly influenced space use by rabbits. Males used larger home ranges and core areas, more burrow systems, and more widely dispersed burrow systems than did female rabbits. We also documented significant differences among study sites in many movement parameters, which suggested that local resource distribution also might influence how pygmy rabbits use space. Our results indicated that pygmy rabbits use large areas and exhibit seasonal, sex, and site-specific variation in patterns of movement and space use. Therefore, larger areas of habitat may be needed to conserve pygmy rabbits to accommodate seasonal, regional, and potentially annual variation in resource availability and to maintain linkages among populations.  相似文献

In food-limited populations, the presence of extra food resources can influence the way individuals allocate energy to growth and reproduction. We experimentally increased food available to cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) near the northern limit of their range over a 2-year period and tested the hypothesis that seasonal growth rates would be enhanced by supplemental food during winter and spring when natural food levels are low. We also examined whether additional food resources were allocated to somatic growth or reproductive effort by pregnant and lactating females. The effect of supplemental food on growth varied with mass and season, but did not influence the growth rates of most cotton rats during spring and winter. In winter, small animals on supplemented grids had higher growth rates than small animals on control grids, but females in spring had lower growth rates under supplemented conditions. Growth rates of supplemented cotton rats were enhanced in summer. Northern cotton rat populations may use season-specific foraging strategies, maximizing energy intake during the reproductive season and minimizing time spent foraging in winter. Adult females invest extra resources in reproduction rather than in somatic growth. Pregnant females receiving supplemental food had higher growth rates than control females, and dependent pups (≤ 1 month of age) born to supplemented mothers had higher growth rates than those born to control mothers. Increased body size seems to confer an advantage during the reproductive season, but has no concomitant advantage to overwinter survival.  相似文献

We studied the effect of winter rank on survival rate and reproductive success in Willow Tits Parus montanus, a resident passerine living in dominance-structured flocks during the nonbreeding season, in 6 years. Winter survival was dependent on both the birds' age and rank. Adults survived better than first-year birds, and within first-year males, dominants survived better than subordinates. In other sex and age classes, rank did not contribute to survival. Although first-year males were in excess among nonbreeders, no connection existed between breeding status and rank. Female rank did not explain the variation in the start of laying, clutch size, number of fledglings or recruit production. We conclude that social status in Willow Tits affects individual fitness mainly through rank-dependent survival. Acquiring a high rank position seems to be most important for first-year birds, especially first-year males.  相似文献

The function of colored ornaments is usually related to thesignaling of individual quality in intra- and intersexual interactions.In cooperative breeding species, where only a fraction of themale population access the breeding status and the other fractionhas the option to help breeding pairs, colored traits mightprovide the females with a reliable information on the qualityof potential mate. Males of the cooperative breeding azure-wingedmagpies (Cyanopica cyanus) display conspicuous blue plumagecoloration. Here we explored the role played by structural bluecoloration of males and the probability of becoming a breederor a helper. Birds were trapped during 4 consecutive years,and feather coloration was measured with a spectrometer. Malesthat became breeders had a more brilliant and saturated bluecoloration and showed a more violet hue in the nonbreeding periodcompared with birds that became helpers. Breeding males alsoshowed a seasonal decline in blueness, whereas the color propertiesof helpers were constant throughout the year. Blueness of individualstrapped in the nonbreeding period was positively correlatedwith body size and condition. These findings are consistentwith a scenario in which nonbreeding blue plumage colorationmay function as a signal of individual quality in the azure-wingedmagpie at the pair formation time and add to growing evidencesuggesting that the nonbreeding season appears particularlyimportant in impacting breeding roles in cooperative breedingbirds.  相似文献

Seasonally dichromatic male superb fairy-wrens (Malurus cyaneus)solicit extra-group fertilizations through displays of theirbrightly colored nuptial plumage during visits to females inneighboring territories. This ornamental plumage is lost atthe end of the breeding season, and reacquired before the nextbreeding season after a highly variable period spent in a cryptic,female-like, "eclipse" plumage. Individuals start visiting femalesas soon as they return to nuptial plumage, often several monthsbefore the start of breeding.We examine variation in the timingof acquisition of nuptial plumage in relation to environmentalconditions and the age, social status, and condition of males.We show that males undergo the prenuptial molt earlier as theyage and when in superior condition, and that molt is delayedin years of more adverse winter weather conditions. We proposethat the purpose of male displays may be to advertise theirquality, and that females use this variation in the timing ofacquisition of nuptial plumage to assess the relative qualityof prospective extra-group mates. Molting earlier is apparentlycostlier, so this handicap would appear to be a reliable reflectionof male quality.  相似文献

Spectacular long-distance migration has evolved repeatedly in animals enabling exploration of resources separated in time and space. In birds, these patterns are largely driven by seasonality, cost of migration, and asymmetries in competition leading most often to leapfrog migration, where northern breeding populations winter furthest to the south. Here, we show that the highly aerial common swift Apus apus, spending the nonbreeding period on the wing, instead exhibits a rarely found chain migration pattern, where the most southern breeding populations in Europe migrate to wintering areas furthest to the south in Africa, whereas the northern populations winter to the north. The swifts concentrated in three major areas in sub-Saharan Africa during the nonbreeding period, with substantial overlap of nearby breeding populations. We found that the southern breeding swifts were larger, raised more young, and arrived to the wintering areas with higher seasonal variation in greenness (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) earlier than the northern breeding swifts. This unusual chain migration pattern in common swifts is largely driven by differential annual timing and we suggest it evolves by prior occupancy and dominance by size in the breeding quarters and by prior occupancy combined with diffuse competition in the winter.  相似文献

Endogenous reserves influence both survival and reproduction of many waterfowl species, but little is known about reserve levels of most species during the nonbreeding season, particularly those wintering at high latitudes. We investigated whether age, sex, and season were related to carcass composition of northern common eiders (Somateria mollissima borealis) wintering in southwest Greenland during 1999–2002. Adults carried more lipid and protein than juveniles during all winters. Among both age classes, males and females had similar fat levels but males carried slightly more protein. There was no dramatic seasonal variation in lipid or protein content. This suggests that during the period of this study, these eiders did not experience large-scale nutritional shortfalls. As predicted, Greenlandic eiders carried more lipid reserves than eider populations wintering in more temperate environments. Contrary to prediction, there was little relation between reserve levels and photoperiod, ambient temperature, or hunting disturbance intensity. Our results suggest that both sexes are equally capable of dealing with nutritional deficits, and that juvenile birds are more prone to nutritional stress as evidenced by their consistently poorer body condition.  相似文献
