Benthos as the basis for arctic lake food webs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Plankton have traditionally been viewed as the basis for limnetic food webs, with zooplankton acting as a gateway for energy passing between phytoplanktonic primary producers and fish. Often, benthic production has been considered to be important primarily in shallow systems or as a subsidy to planktonic food web pathways. Stable isotope food web analyses of two arctic lakes (NE14 and I minus) in the Toolik Lake region of Alaska indicate that benthos are the primary source of carbon for adults of all species of benthic and pelagic fish present. We found no effect of turbidity, which may suppress benthic algae by shading, on food web structure. Even though Secchi transparency varied from 10.2 m in NE14 to 0.55–2.6 m in I minus, food webs in both lakes were based upon benthos, had four trophic levels, and culminated with omnivorous lake trout. We suggest that the importance of benthos in the food webs of these lakes is due to their extreme oligotrophy, resulting in planktonic resources that are insufficient for the support of planktivorous consumers.  相似文献

Potential body size-trophic position relationships of the Darkbarbel catfish Pelteobagrus vachelli (Richardson 1846) were examined using stable isotope analysis. Pelteobagrus vachelli is a benthic feeding fish from Lake Poyang, the largest freshwater lake in China. Two-source mixing model with mussel (Corbicula fluminea) and snail (Bellamya aeruginosa) as baseline primary consumers of planktonic and benthic food webs, respectively, was used to estimate contribution of carbon derived from planktonic vs. benthic food web. Results showed that as an indicator of trophic position, δ15N was negatively correlated with the body length and weight of the fish; on the other hand, as an indicator of the end-member food sources, δ13C was not correlated with fish size. The mixing model results showed that the averaged trophic position of our sampled 3.3–12.7 cm Pelteobagrus vachelli was 3.1 ± 0.2 and derived 68 ± 27% of their food from the benthic food web, confirming that the feeding behavior of the catfish favors benthic food sources.  相似文献

Benthic diatoms are assumed to be of minor importance as food sources in sandy-beach food webs, since they are typically scarce in sandy-beach sediments; whereas organic matter derived from land and sea is known to be more important in sandy-beach food webs. In order to test if benthic and planktonic diatoms play a minor or major role, respectively, in sandy-beach food webs, a laboratory experiment was conducted. Labelled planktonic and benthic diatoms, enriched in the stable carbon 13C isotope, were offered as food sources to sandy-beach macrofauna and meiofauna communities. Uptake of both types of diatoms occurred with most of the species, but benthic diatoms were preferentially consumed by two macrofaunal species and all meiofaunal species. This result reveals the importance of benthic carbon sources in both macrofaunal and interstitial food webs, and suggests a link between both food webs through the common use of benthic diatoms.  相似文献

We compiled published data on the nitrogen and carbon stable isotope ratios of phytoplankton and benthic microalgae from lentic systems and explored the primary factors determining the isotope values among systems. Also, we investigated seasonal changes in nitrogen stable isotope ratios of phytoplankton and benthic microalgae in the strongly acidic lake, Lake Katanuma, which has only two dominant species, Pinnularia acidojaponica as a benthic diatom and Chlamydomonas acidophila, a planktonic green alga. From the published dataset, it may be concluded that δ13C of benthic diatoms were more enriched than those of phytoplankton at the same sites, although the nitrogen isotope of phytoplankton and benthic microalgae were similar. This differences in δ13C between benthic microalgae and phytoplankton could be explained by the boundary layer effect. On the other hand, nitrogen isotope values of both benthic microalgae and phytoplankton were primarily controlled by the same environmental factor, and boundary layer effects are not the primary factor determining the nitrogen isotope values of microalgae. Also, we showed temporal dynamics in nitrogen isotopes of benthic and planktonic microalgae species in Lake Katanuma, and the trends of nitrogen isotopes are similar between benthic and planktonic microalgae, as concluded from the published dataset.  相似文献

1. Stable isotopes of carbon are useful for differentiating between freshwater food chains based on planktonic algae or benthic algae, but are reported to be of limited use for identifying food chains based on sedimentary detritus. Because data from marine systems suggest that stable isotopes of sulphur (δ34S values) have potential in this regard, we tested their utility in freshwater lakes.
2. We found that sulphate in the water column of four boreal lakes was enriched in 34S compared to the sulphur in bulk sediments from these lakes. Furthermore, within a given lake, insects known to feed on sediment (directly or via predation) had δ34S values similar to those of sediment, whereas planktonic and benthic invertebrates known to feed on suspended particles had δ34S values similar to those of sulphate in the water column.
3. Using the stable S isotope values of invertebrates that obtain their S from either the sediment or the water column as end members in a two-source mixing model, we show that two fish species obtain their food from both planktonic and sedimentary sources. Furthermore, model results suggest that, as expected, the more benthic-feeding fish species obtains more of its S from the sediment compartment than does the species that feeds in the water-column.
4. Our results suggest that measurements of stable sulphur isotopes provide a means of distinguishing between members of food chains that are based in the water column from those based on sedimentary detritus. As such, they would be a useful complement to stable C isotopes that are used to distinguish between food chains based on planktonic or benthic algae.  相似文献

Climate-mediated changes in the phenology of Arctic sea ice and primary production may alter benthic food webs that sustain populations of Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus). Interspecific resource competition could place an additional strain on ice-associated marine mammals already facing loss of sea ice habitat. Using fatty acid (FA) profiles, FA trophic markers, and FA stable carbon isotope analyses, we found that walruses and bearded seals partitioned food resources in 2009–2011. Interspecific differences in FA profiles were largely driven by variation in non-methylene FAs, which are markers of benthic invertebrate prey taxa, indicating varying consumption of specific benthic prey. We used Bayesian multi-source FA stable isotope mixing models to estimate the proportional contributions of particulate organic matter (POM) from sympagic (ice algal), pelagic, and benthic sources to these apex predators. Proportional contributions of FAs to walruses and bearded seals from benthic POM sources were high [44 (17–67)% and 62 (38–83)%, respectively] relative to other sources of POM. Walruses also obtained considerable contributions of FAs from pelagic POM sources [51 (32–73)%]. Comparison of δ13C values of algal FAs from walruses and bearded seals to those from benthic prey from different feeding groups from the Chukchi and Bering seas revealed that different trophic pathways sustained walruses and bearded seals. Our findings suggest that (1) resource partitioning may mitigate interspecific competition, and (2) climate change impacts on Arctic food webs may elicit species-specific responses in these high trophic level consumers.  相似文献

Analyses of stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and C:N ratios of food webs within a floodplain and a constricted-channel region of the Ohio River during October 1993 and July 1994 indicate that the increasingly influential flood pulse concept (FPC) does not, for either location, adequately address food web structure for this very large river. Furthermore, results of this study suggest that the riverine productivity model (RPM) is more appropriate than the widely known river continuum concept (RCC) for the constricted region of this river. These␣conclusions are based on stable isotope analyses of potential sources of organic matter (riparian C3 trees, riparian C4 grasses and agricultural crops, submerged macrophytes, benthic filamentous algae, benthic particulate organic matter, and transported organic matter containing detritus and phytoplankton) and various functional feeding groups of invertebrate and fish consumers. The FPC, which stresses the key contribution of organic matter, particularly terrestrial organic matter, originating from the floodplain to riverine food webs, was judged inappropriate for the floodplain region of the Ohio River for hydrodynamic and biotic reasons. The rising limb and peak period of discharge typically occur in November through March when temperatures are low (generally much less than 10°C) and greater than bank-full conditions are relatively unpredictable and short-lived. The major food potentially available to riverine organisms migrating into the floodplain would be decaying vegetation because autotrophic production is temperature and light limited and terrestrial insect production is minimal at that time. It is clear from our data that terrestrial C4 plants contribute little, if anything, to the consumer food web (based on δ13C values), and δ15N values for C3 plants, coarse benthic organic matter, and fine benthic organic matter were too depleted (∼7–12‰ lower than most invertebrate consumer values) for this organic matter to be supporting the food web. The RPM, which emphasizes the primary role of autotrophic production in large rivers, is the most viable of the remaining two ecosystem models for the constricted-channel region of the Ohio based on stable isotope linkage between sources and consumers of organic matter in the food web. The most important form of food web organic matter is apparently transported (suspended) fine (FTOM) and ultra-fine particulate organic matter. We propose that phytoplankton and detritus of an autochthonous origin in the seston would represent a more usable energy source for benthic (bivalve molluscs, hydropsychid caddisflies) and planktonic (microcrustaceans) suspension feeders than the more refractory allochthonous materials derived from upstream processing of terrestrial organic matter. Benthic grazers depend heavily on nonfilamentous benthic algae (based on gut analysis from a separate study), but filamentous benthic algae have no apparent connection to invertebrate consumers (based on δ13C values). Amphipod and crayfish show a strong relationship to aquatic macrophytes (possibly through detrital organic matter rather than living plant tissue). These observations contrast with the prediction of the RCC that food webs in large rivers are based principally on refractory FTOM and dissolved organic matter from upstream inefficiencies in organic-matter processing and the bacteria growing upon these suspended or dissolved detrital compounds. The conclusions drawn here for the Ohio River cannot yet be extended to other floodplain and constricted-channel rivers in temperate and tropical latitudes until more comparable data are available on relatively pristine and moderately regulated rivers. A stable isotope study was carried out to investigate the feeding ecology of the common goby Pomatoschistus microps larvae (Krøyer, 1838), and to assess differences in the response of planktonic food web to nutrient enrichment, in two ecosystems from the Southern European coast with different levels of historical pollution (estuaries of the Minho and Lima Rivers). At each estuary and time (July 2012, November 2012, February 2013, and June 2013), the fish larvae of two size classes (class 0: 0–10 mm; class 1: 10–15 mm), particulate organic matter (POM), and pelagic zooplankton were collected. The stable isotope mixing model SIAR revealed that, despite temporal differences in the relative proportion of prey items ingested, in both estuaries P. microps larvae feed on both planktonic-hyperbenthic food sources, predating mainly on copepods (from 34% to 60%), Mysidacea (from 16% to 28%), and brachyuran zoea (from 14% to 29%). Fish larvae size classes did not differ significantly for δ15N, and exhibited a very narrow range of the δ13C signature. Enriched δ15N values of all biota in the Lima estuary throughout the study period, with a marked nitrogen enrichment in colder months, are indicative of higher anthropogenic inputs of nitrogen (e.g. sewage and industrial discharges, agriculture) into this system. The δ15N values of fish larvae and other planktonic groups can be a sensitive bioindicator, because they are highly correlated with the nitrogen content of water (ammonium), indicating that this element has transferred through the planktonic food web. Enriched carbon isotope ratios were observed in warmer months, in both estuaries, and the heavier δ13C values in Lima are best explained by differences in the degree of marine influence. This research emphasises the utility of stable isotopes in trophic interactions studies, highlighting the relevance of the stable nitrogen isotope of zooplanktonic communities as a reliable bioindicator to detect patterns of anthropogenic nitrogen contamination in estuarine ecosystems.  相似文献

A pilot study was conducted to assess the potential for stable isotope analyses to reveal the fate of waste pelleted food material from fish farms in freshwater food webs. Esthwaite Water (Cumbria, UK) was selected as the study site, as it hosts an established salmonid farm, and a wealth of complementary limnological data exists. Salmonid pellet feed consists of primarily marine-derived material and thus exhibits carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic compositions distinct to most freshwater organic material. Comparison of the isotopic ratios of organisms at the cage site with an unaffected control site, supports incorporation of pellet-derived material to the diet of planktonic and benthic communities. Moreover, after allowing for a number of trophic transfers, stable isotope analyses revealed the predatory cladoceran Leptodora kindti also utilised pellet material, while roach were probably short-circuiting the food chain by directly consuming particulate pellet material, as well as via ingestion of their zooplankton prey. Isotope data substituted into a simple two-source mixing model suggested that approximately 65% of Daphnia, and >80% of roach body carbon may be derived from pellet material in the plankton, and that chironomid larvae may incorporate >50% in the sediment environs. However, contributions calculated from both 13C and 15N values were inconsistent, which may simply be due to the constraints of the model and parameters used, but may also reflect different routing of isotopes from the original pellet source, via soluble or particulate routes.  相似文献

We used the stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to examine the food webs of three small flood-plain lakes (billabongs) in south-eastern Australia. With few exceptions, stable carbon isotope analysis could not be used to discriminate among the conspicuous potential sources of fringing, emergent or floating vegetation or benthic detritus. These primary sources showed little spatial or temporal variation in 13C values, with means ranging from-28.5 to-26.8 in spring and-29.1 to-25.4 in late summer. Submerged vegetation had similar 13C values to the above sources in spring but showed greater spatial variation and were less 13C-depleted, considerably so in some species, in late summer. Epiphytes and algae were 13C-depleted in spring compared with the other primary sources but became more 13C-enriched in late summer. Mean 13C values for primary and secondary consumers were not only far more variable (-37.4 to-22.7) but in general were more negative than the potential food sources, particularly in spring. Using the combined information from stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis, we could narrow down the list of potential primary sources driving food webs in these billabongs. The freshwater crayfish (Cherax) was one of the few taxa that appeared to obtain its biomass carbon from detrital material. Gastropods and leptocerid caddis larvae on emergent or submerged vegetation obtained a mixture of carbon from epiphytes and macrophytes; in both taxa, epiphytes contributed more to biomass carbon than did the macrophytes. However, other common grazers and collector/gatherers sampled from macrophytes, e.g. baetid mayflies, chironomid larvae and atyid shrimps, were often too 13C-depleted even to have derived their biomass carbon solely from epiphytes. Many other primary consumers, including zooplankton, and mussels (Velesunio), and most of the secondary consumers, including water mites (Hydracarina), phantom midge larvae (Chaoborus) and fish, were also 13C-depleted. The enormous biomass of littoral and fringing vegetation could contribute to metazoan food webs in these billabongs only if an additional highly 13C-depleted source was consumed simultaneously. Methane released from billabong sediments could provide such a 13C-depleted carbon source that is re-introduced into metazoan food webs via the consumption of methanotrophic bacteria. Alternatively, food webs in these water bodies are largely driven by an unknown and inconspicuous 13C-depleted primary producer, such as planktonic Chlorophyta.  相似文献

Cross-ecosystem movements of material and energy are ubiquitous. Aquatic ecosystems typically receive material that also includes organic matter from the surrounding catchment. Terrestrial-derived (allochthonous) organic matter can enter aquatic ecosystems in dissolved or particulate form. Several studies have highlighted the importance of dissolved organic carbon to aquatic consumers, but less is known about allochthonous particulate organic carbon (POC). Similarly, most studies showing the effects of allochthonous organic carbon (OC) on aquatic consumers have investigated pelagic habitats; the effects of allochthonous OC on benthic communities are less well studied. Allochthonous inputs might further decrease primary production through light reduction, thereby potentially affecting autotrophic resource availability to consumers. Here, an enclosure experiment was carried out to test the importance of POC input and light availability on the resource use in a benthic food web of a clear-water lake. Corn starch (a C(4) plant) was used as a POC source due to its insoluble nature and its distinct carbon stable isotope value (δ(13)C). The starch carbon was closely dispersed over the bottom of the enclosures to study the fate of a POC source exclusively available to sediment biota. The addition of starch carbon resulted in a clear shift in the isotopic signature of surface-dwelling herbivorous and predatory invertebrates. Although the starch carbon was added solely to the sediment surface, the carbon originating from the starch reached zooplankton. We suggest that allochthonous POC can subsidize benthic food webs directly and can be further transferred to pelagic systems, thereby highlighting the importance of benthic pathways for pelagic habitats.  相似文献

The food webs of rocky infra-littoral ecosystems in the Mediterranean have been little studied. In this investigation stable isotopes and dietary data were compared in an attempt to describe features of the food webs concerned. δ13C and δ15N were determined for plants, invertebrates and fishes from the Bay of Calvi, Corsica. Dietary data were derived from the literature. δ13C of plants ranged from –8.59‰ to –33.74‰, of benthic invertebrates from –17.0‰ to –20.52‰, of planktonic invertebrates from –20.08‰ to –22.34‰ and of fishes from –16.27‰ to –19.59‰. δ15N was generally greater at higher trophic levels. δ15N of plants was 0.95–2.92‰, of benthic invertebrates 1.69–6.54‰, of planktonic invertebrates 3.51–6.82‰ and of fishes 4.63–9.77‰. 13C enrichment tended to be associated with benthic food chains and 13C depletion with planktonic chains. Stable-isotope data suggested more varied diets for many species than implied by gut-contents data. Omnivory and trophic plasticity were widespread, and many consumers fed lower down the food chain than previous studies had suggested. Both stable-isotope and gut-contents analysis resolved differences between fishes feeding on planktonic and benthic prey and indicated that the herbivorous fish Sarpa salpa fed on a diet substantially different from that of other fishes. Zooplankton were important in the diets of several consumers (both primary and secondary), as was plankton derived detritus. One species of fish previously identified as planktivorous was shown to feed largely on benthic organisms, whilst several species of benthic invertebrates may feed on plankton-derived detritus. Although herbivores seemed to obtain most of their C from macroalgae, δ15N data suggested that many of these animals supplemented their intake of N, although gut-contents analysis did not provide evidence for such uptake. The isotopic data have elucidated several features of the food web which we would not otherwise have detected. Received: 26 April 1999 / Accepted: 24 September 1999  相似文献

A stable isotope study was carried out seasonally in three coastal ponds (Marinello system, Italy) affected by different gull guano input to investigate the effect of nutrient subsidies on food web structure and dynamics. A marked 15N enrichment occurred in the pond receiving the highest guano input, indicating that gull-derived fertilization (guanotrophication) had a strong localised effect and flowed across trophic levels. The main food web response to guanotrophication was an overall erosion of the benthic pathway in favour of the planktonic. Subsidized primary consumers, mostly deposit feeders, switched their diet according to organic matter source availability. Secondary consumers and, in particular, fish from the guanotrophic pond, acted as couplers of planktonic and benthic pathways and showed an omnivorous trophic behaviour. Food web structure showed substantial variability among ponds and a marked seasonality in the subsidized one: an overall simplification was evident only in summer when guano input maximises its trophic effects, while higher trophic diversity and complexity resulted when guano input was low to moderate.  相似文献

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratio analyses were used to characterize the primary energy sources and trophic positions of 16 common Lake Superior wave zone invertebrate species. Isotope data from six tributary species that were taxonomically and ecologically matched with common wave zone species revealed broad energetic separation between these similarly structured benthic food webs. Previously published stable isotope data for Lake Superior wetland and pelagic food webs were used to assess the relative importance of inter-habitat energy flow within the Lake Superior ecosystem. The results of these comparisons indicate that the Lake Superior wave zone is energetically distinct from its tributaries, wetlands, and to a lesser extent from its vast pelagic realm. This information and approach should prove useful in future studies on the bioenergetics of inter-zonal migrants and other species that forage in multiple habitats within the lake and also in revealing energetic connections among terrestrial, riverine, littoral, and pelagic food webs in the coastal ecosystems of Lake Superior.  相似文献

We investigated the role of autochthonous and terrestrial carbon in supporting aquatic food webs in the Canadian High Arctic by determining the diet of the dominant primary consumer, aquatic chironomids. These organisms were studied in fresh waters on 3 islands of the Arctic Archipelago (~74–76°N) including barren polar desert watersheds and a polar oasis with lush meadows. Stomach content analysis of 578 larvae indicated that chironomids primarily ingested diatoms and sediment detritus with little variation among most genera. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope mixing models applied to 2 lakes indicated that benthic algae contributed 68–95% to chironomid diet at a polar desert site and 70–78% at a polar oasis site. Detritus, originating from either phytoplankton or terrestrial sources, also contributed minor amounts to chironomid diet (0–32%). Radiocarbon measurements for the 2 lakes showed that old terrestrial carbon did not support chironomid production. Carbon stable isotope ratios of chironomids in other High Arctic lakes provided further dietary evidence that was consistent with mixing model results. These findings indicate that, in the Canadian High Arctic, chironomids (and fish that consume them) are supported primarily by benthic algae in both polar desert and oasis lakes. In contrast, our review of carbon flow studies for lakes in other Arctic regions of North America shows that terrestrial carbon and phytoplankton can be important energy sources for consumers. This study provides a baseline to detect future climate-related impacts on carbon pathways in High Arctic lakes.  相似文献

In this study we have used stable isotope analysis to identify major food resources driving food webs in commercial rice agroecosystems and to examine the effects of agricultural management practices on the trophic structure of these food webs. Potential carbon sources and aquatic macroinvertebrate consumers were collected from large-scale rice farms in south-eastern Australia cultivated under three different crop management regimes conventional-aerial (agrochemicals applied, aerially sown), conventional-sod (agrochemicals applied, directly sown) and organic-sod (agrochemical-free, directly sown). Evidence from stable isotope analysis demonstrated the importance of food sources, such as biofilm and detritus, as the principal energy sources driving aquatic food webs in rice agroecosystems. Despite the greater diversity of potential food sources collected from the organic-sod regime across all sampling occasions, the range of food resources directly assimilated by macroinvertebrate consumers did not differ substantially across management regimes. Trophic complexity of aquatic food webs, as evidenced by the number of trophic levels identified using δ15N data, differed across management regimes at the early season sampling. Sites with low or no agrochemical applications contained more than two trophic levels, but at the site with the highest pesticide application no primary or secondary consumers were found. Our data demonstrates that the choice of agricultural management regime has a season-long influence on aquatic food webs in rice crops, and highlights the importance of conserving non-rice food resources that drive these trophic networks.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios are commonly used in the study of marine food webs. However, different sample processing methods can influence the measurement of these stable isotope ratios. The purpose of this study is to define an adequate methodology to be used in the construction of whole food webs. It is demonstrated that acidification of the samples results in a decrease in carbon stable isotope values for sedimentary organic matter, suspended particulate organic matter, plankton and invertebrates with carbonated structures. The response was variable for nitrogen isotope ratios. Based on our results we recommend sample acidification for carbon analysis in these compartments where effects of this treatment were observed. We observed a decrease in δ13C values after washing with distilled water, so we do not recommend washing with water after acidification. For nitrogen analysis, acidification should be avoided. The various dehydration treatments studied caused significant differences only in nitrogen isotope ratios.  相似文献

We estimated the food sources of macroinvertebrates using carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur stable isotopes in a headwater stream. Stream food webs, including macroinvertebrates, rely on production from autochthonous and allochthonous photosynthesis. We found that a freshwater grazer, the snail Semisulcospira libertina, may assimilate different food sources, based on stable carbon and nitrogen isotope evidence from snail muscle and the much lighter sulfur isotope signature than those of other associated macroinvertebrates. Previous studies have shown the importance of methanotrophic and sulfur bacteria in reductive environments (clay and organic‐rich sediments) as food sources for macroinvertebrates. Our results show that the production by chemoautotrophic bacteria contributes to the food sources of a snail in a stream. Thus, the chemoautotrophic bacteria are important in the freshwater food webs, even in mostly aerobic habitats. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Management of the food web is important in maintaining ecosystem functions; however, the studies to assess anthropogenic impact on food web structures are very limited. Recently, shoreline development is considered to impact the littoral zone of lakes through loss of littoral habitats. Shoreline engineering would consequently modify the food web structure and coupling between benthic and pelagic habitats. Thus, we investigated whether lakeshore modification would change benthic–pelagic coupling by largemouth bass in 15 ponds, which differed in the proportion of concrete bank modification. We performed isotope mixing models to estimate benthic contribution to the fish species and tested the relationships with environmental factors including proportion of bank modification by general linear models. These results showed that the benthic contribution to largemouth bass was strongly related to the proportion of anthropogenic shoreline modification, while for bluegill sunfish, the benthic contribution was not changed with anthropogenic shoreline modification. Therefore, anthropogenic modification of shoreline strongly modified the food webs in ponds through the littoral habitat modification. The results suggested that we should pay attention to the anthropogenic impact on food web structures to maintain ecosystems.  相似文献
