Nanomaterials are gaining enormous interests due to their novel applications that have been explored nearly in every field of our contemporary society. In this scenario, preparations of nanomaterials following green routes have attracted widespread attention in terms of sustainable, reliable, and environmentally friendly practices to produce diverse nanostructures. In this review, we summarize the fundamental processes and mechanisms of green synthesis approaches of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). We explore the role of plants and microbes as natural bioresources to prepare TiO2 NPs. Particularly, focus has been made to explore the potential of TiO2-based nanomaterials to design a variety of sensing platforms by exploiting the photocatalysis efficiency under the influence of a light source. These types of sensing are of massive importance for monitoring environmental pollution and therefore for inventing advanced strategies to remediate hazardous pollutants and offer a clean environment.  相似文献

Water contamination by various recalcitrant organic aromatic compounds is an emerging environmental issue that is increasingly attracting the attention of environmental scientists. A great majority of these recalcitrant pollutants are industrial wastes, textile dyes, pharmaceuticals, hormones, and personal care products that are discharged into wastewater. Not surprisingly, various chemical, physical, and biological strategies have been proposed and developed to remove and/or degrade these pollutants from contaminated water bodies. Biological approaches, specifically using oxidoreductase enzymes (such as peroxidases and laccases) for pollutant degradation are a relatively new and a promising research area that has potential advantages over other methods due to their higher efficiency and the ease of handling. This review focuses on the application of different classes of oxidoreductase enzymes to degrade various classes of organic pollutants. In addition to classifying these enzymes based on structural differences, the major factors that can affect their remediation ability, such as the class of peroxidases employed, pH, molecular structure of the pollutant, temperature, and the presence of redox mediators are also examined and discussed. Interestingly, a literature survey combined with our unpublished data suggests that “peroxidases” are a very heterogeneous and diverse family of enzymes and have different pH profiles, temperature optima, thermal stabilities, requirements for redox mediators, and substrate specificities as well as varying detoxification abilities. Additionally, remediation of real-life polluted samples by oxidoreductases is also highlighted as well as a critical look at current challenges and future perspectives.  相似文献

Current global environmental issues raise unavoidable challenges for our use of natural resources. Supplying the human population with clean water is becoming a global problem. Numerous organic and inorganic impurities in municipal, industrial, and agricultural waters, ranging from microplastics to high nutrient loads and heavy metals, endanger our nutrition and health. The development of efficient wastewater treatment technologies and circular economic approaches is thus becoming increasingly important. The biomass production of microalgae using industrial wastewater offers the possibility of recycling industrial residues to create new sources of raw materials for energy and material use. This review discusses algae‐based wastewater treatment technologies with a special focus on industrial wastewater sources, the potential of non‐conventional extremophilic (thermophilic, acidophilic, and psychrophilic) microalgae, and industrial algae‐wastewater treatment concepts that have already been put into practice.  相似文献

Nanotechnology is a new and emerging technology with wealth of applications. It involves the synthesis and application of materials having one of the dimensions in the range of 1–100 nm. A wide variety of physico–chemical approaches are being used these days for the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs). However, biogenic reduction of metal precursors to produce corresponding NPs is eco-friendly, less expensive, free of chemical contaminants for medical and biological applications where purity of NPs is of major concern. Biogenic reduction is a “Bottom Up” approach similar to chemical reduction where a reducing agent is replaced by extract of a natural products with inherent stabilizing, growth terminating and capping properties. Furthermore, the nature of biological entities in different concentrations in combination with reducing organic agents influence the size and shape of NPs. Present review focuses on microbes or plants based green synthesis of Ag, Au, Cu, Fe, Pd, Ru, PbS, CdS, CuO, CeO2, Fe3O4, TiO2, and ZnO NPs and their potential applications.  相似文献

Nanoscale iron particles have attracted substantial interest due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Over the years, various physical and chemical methods have been developed to synthesize these nanostructures which are usually expensive and potentially harmful to human health and the environment. Synthesis of iron nanoparticles (INPs) by using plant extract is now of great interest in order to develop a novel and sustainable approach toward green chemistry. In this method the chemical compounds and organic solvents are replaced with phytochemicals and aqueous matrixes, respectively. Similar to any chemical and biochemical reaction, factors such as reaction temperature, concentration of iron precursor, concentration of leaf extract, and reaction time have critical effects on the reaction yield. This review focuses on the novel approaches used for green synthesis of INPs by using plant resources. The currently available statistics including the factors affecting the synthesis process and potential applications of the fabricated nanoparticles are discussed. Recommendations are also given for areas of future research in order to improve the production process.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge: recent advances   总被引:27,自引:1,他引:26
Aerobic granulation, a novel environmental biotechnological process, was increasingly drawing interest of researchers engaging in work in the area of biological wastewater treatment. Developed about one decade ago, it was exciting research work that explored beyond the limits of aerobic wastewater treatment such as treatment of high strength organic wastewaters, bioremediation of toxic aromatic pollutants including phenol, toluene, pyridine and textile dyes, removal of nitrogen, phosphate, sulphate and nuclear waste and adsorption of heavy metals. Despite this intensive research the mechanisms responsible for aerobic granulation and the strategy to expedite the formation of granular sludge, and effects of different operational and environmental factors have not yet been clearly described. This paper provides an up-to-date review on recent research development in aerobic biogranulation technology and applications in treating toxic industrial and municipal wastewaters. Factors affecting granulation, granule characterization, granulation hypotheses, effects of different operational parameters on aerobic granulation, response of aerobic granules to different environmental conditions, their applications in bioremediations, and possible future trends were delineated. The review attempts to shed light on the fundamental understanding in aerobic granulation by newly employed confocal laser scanning microscopic techniques and microscopic observations of granules.  相似文献

Synthetic dyes are extensively used in wide range of industries amongst which textile processing industries are the major consumers. Large amounts of dyes are lost in wastewaters of these industries during dyeing and subsequent washing steps of textiles. These dyes are resistant to de gradation by conventional wastewater treatment plants and are released into environment untreated thus causing pollution of surface and ground waters in the areas of the world harboring such industries. Presence of color in wastewaters has become major environmental concern and stringent discharge standards are being enforced on release of colored wastewaters in environment. The seriousness of the problem is apparent from the magnitude of the research done in this field in last decade. Increasing number of microorganisms are being described for their ability to decolorize and degrade artificial dyes and novel bioremediation approaches for treatment dye bearing wastewaters are being worked out. In this review we have investigated potential microbial processes for developing feasible remediation technology to combat environmental pollution due to dye bearing wastewaters.  相似文献

Fruit and vegetable wastes produced in astronomical quantities from food processing and agriculture industries often cause nuisance in municipal landfills owing to their high biodegradability. Biosorption by these waste-based adsorbents can be used as a cost effective and efficient technique for the removal of toxic heavy metals and dyes from wastewater. Recently, many papers claiming the feasible use of these biosorbents for water decontamination, treatment of industrial and agricultural wastewater and valuable metal recovery have been published. The organic waste-based adsorbents, characterized by good uptake capacity and rapid kinetics are expected to be economically and ecologically viable. This paper presents a judicious and pragmatic review depicting the key advances in implications of the fruit and vegetable wastes in pollution mitigation, the underlying mechanisms, major challenges and the future implementations. This compilation is expected to provide an impetus to the bioremediation research and promote green technology.  相似文献

The present review emphasizes on the use of Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme in the bioremediation of phenolic contaminants from industrial wastewater. PPO is a group of enzyme that mainly exists in two forms; tyrosinase (E.C. 1.14.18.1) and laccase (E.C. 1.10.3.1) which are widely distributed among microorganisms, plants and animals. These oxidoreductive enzymes remain effective in a wide range of pH and temperature, particularly if they are immobilized on some carrier or matrices, and they can degrade a wide variety of mono and/or diphenolic compounds. However, high production costs inhibit the widespread use of these enzymes for remediation in industrial scale. Nevertheless, bench studies and field studies have shown enzymatic wastewater treatment to be feasible options for biodegradation of phenols through biological route. Nanomaterials-PPO conjugates have been also applied for removal of phenols which has successfully lower down the drawbacks of enzymatic water treatment. Therefore in this article various approaches and current state of use of PPO in the bioremediation of wastewater, as well as the benefits and disadvantages associated with the use of such enzymes have been overviewed.  相似文献

Water pollution control is presently one of the major thrust areas of scientific research. While coloured organic compounds generally impart only a minor fraction of the organic load to wastewaters, their colour renders them aesthetically unacceptable. Stringent regulating measures are coaxing industries to treat their waste effluents to increasingly high standards. Colour removal, in particular, has recently become an area of major scientific interest as indicated by the multitude of related research reports. During the past two decades, several decolourization techniques have been reported, few of which have been accepted by some industries. There is a need to find alternative treatments that are effective in removing dyes and colourants from large volume of effluents, which are cost-effective, like the biological or integrated systems. This article reviews some of the widely used and most promising industrial wastewater decolourization methods. Data on decolourizing efficiencies of different causative agents, obtained by means of different physical, chemical and biological methods are discussed. Further a critical review is made on the various treatment methodologies and emerging technologies with a note on their advantages and disadvantages.  相似文献

Algae are a group of ubiquitous photosynthetic organisms comprising eukaryotic green algae and Gram-negative prokaryotic cyanobacteria, which have immense potential as a bioresource for various industries related to biofuels, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals and feed. This fascinating group of organisms also has applications in modern agriculture through facilitating increased nutrient availability, maintaining the organic carbon and fertility of soil, and enhancing plant growth and crop yields, as a result of stimulation of soil microbial activity. Several cyanobacteria provide nitrogen fertilization through biological nitrogen fixation and through enzymatic activities related to interconversions and mobilization of different forms of nitrogen. Both green algae and cyanobacteria are involved in the production of metabolites such as growth hormones, polysaccharides, antimicrobial compounds, etc., which play an important role in the colonization of plants and proliferation of microbial and eukaryotic communities in soil. Currently, the development of consortia of cyanobacteria with bacteria or fungi or microalgae or their biofilms has widened their scope of utilization. Development of integrated wastewater treatment and biomass production systems is an emerging technology, which exploits the nutrient sequestering potential of microalgae and its valorisation. This review focuses on prospects and challenges of application of microalgae in various areas of agriculture, including crop production, protection and natural resource management. An overview of the recent advances, novel technologies developed, their commercialization status and future directions are also included.  相似文献

In this review, we describe the synthesis, physical properties, surface functionalization, and biological applications of silicon nanoparticles (also known as quantum dots). We compare them against current technologies, such as fluorescent organic dyes and heavy metal chalcogenide-based quantum dots. In particular, we examine the many different methods that can be used to both create and modify these nanoparticles and the advantages they may have over current technologies that have stimulated research into designing silicon nanoparticles for in vitro and in vivo applications.  相似文献

The textile industry is a substantial consumer of water and produces enormous volumes of contaminated water; the most important contaminants are azo dyes. Microbial processes for the treatment of textile wastewater have the advantage of being cost-effective and environmentally friendly and producing less sludge. The most promising microorganisms for wastewater treatment are those isolated from sites contaminated with dyes or from the sludge of treatment plants because they have adapted to survive in adverse conditions. The mechanism of microbial decolouration occurs from adsorption, enzymatic degradation or a combination of both. Both reductases and oxidases are involved in the microbial degradation process. The goal of microbial treatment is to decolourise and detoxify the dye-contaminated effluents. In this review, we summarise the methodologies used to evaluate the toxicity of azo dyes and their degradation products. Recent studies on the decolouration or degradation of azo dyes using algae, yeast, filamentous fungi and bacteria, genetically modified microorganisms, microbial consortia and microbiological systems combined with Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) and Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) are discussed in this review.  相似文献

The synthesis of nanoparticles (NP) using algae has been underexploited and even unexplored. In recent times, there are few reports on the synthesis of NP using algae, which are being used as a bio-factory for the synthesis. Moreover, the algae are a renewable source, so that it could be effectively explored in the green synthesis of NP. Hence, this review reports on the biosynthesis of NP especially gold and silver NP using algae. The most widely reported NP from algae are silver and gold than any other metallic NP, which might be due to their enormous biomedical field applications. The NP synthesized by this method is mainly in spherical shape; the reports are revealing the fact that the cell free extracts are highly exploited for the synthesis than the biomass, which is associated with the problem of recovering the particles. Besides, mechanism involving in the reduction and stabilization is well demonstrated to deepen the knowledge towards enhancement possibilities for the synthesis and applications.  相似文献

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii chloroplasts as protein factories   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Protein-based therapeutics are the fastest growing sector of drug development, mainly because of the high sensitivity and specificity of these molecules. Their high specificity leads to few side effects and excellent success rates in drug development. However, the inherent complexity of these molecules restricts their synthesis to living cells, making recombinant proteins expensive to produce. In addition to therapeutic uses, recombinant proteins also have a variety of industrial applications and are important research reagents. Eukaryotic algae offer the potential to produce high yields of recombinant proteins more rapidly and at much lower cost than traditional cell culture. Additionally, transgenic algae can be grown in complete containment, reducing any risk of environmental contamination. This system might also be used for the oral delivery of therapeutic proteins, as green algae are edible and do not contain endotoxins or human viral or prion contaminants.  相似文献

To date, more than 110 full-scale anammox plants have been installed and are in operation, treating industrial NH4 +-rich wastewater worldwide, and anammox-based technologies are flourishing. This review the current state of the art for engineering applications of the anammox process, including various anammox-based technologies, reactor selection and attempts to apply it at different wastewater plants. Process control and implementation for stable performance are discussed as well as some remaining issues concerning engineering application are exposed, including the start-up period, process disturbances, greenhouse gas emissions and especially mainstream anammox applications. Finally, further development of the anammox engineering application is proposed in this review.  相似文献

In recent years, the green approach of nanoparticle synthesis by biological entities has been gaining great interest over various other physico-chemical methods, which are laden with many disadvantages. The important challenging issues in current nanotechnology include the development of reliable experimental techniques for the synthesis of nanoparticles of different compositions and sizes along with high monodispersity. Biological systems offer unique promising features to tailor nanomaterials with predefined properties. Fungi are the favorite choice of microorganisms due to the wide variety of advantages they offer over bacteria, yeast, actinomycetes, plants, and other physico-chemical techniques. The use of microorganisms for the deliberate synthesis of nanoparticles is a fairly new and exciting area of research with considerable potential for further development. This review describes an overview of the current green approaches for the synthesis of nanoparticles with particular emphasis on fungi, which are gaining worldwide popularity as nano-factories for the green synthesis of nanoparticles.  相似文献

Phototrophic biofilms and their potential applications   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Phototrophic biofilms occur on surfaces exposed to light in a range of terrestrial and aquatic environments. Oxygenic phototrophs like diatoms, green algae, and cyanobacteria are the major primary producers that generate energy and reduce carbon dioxide, providing the system with organic substrates and oxygen. Photosynthesis fuels processes and conversions in the total biofilm community, including the metabolism of heterotrophic organisms. A matrix of polymeric substances secreted by phototrophs and heterotrophs enhances the attachment of the biofilm community. This review discusses the actual and potential applications of phototrophic biofilms in wastewater treatment, bioremediation, fish-feed production, biohydrogen production, and soil improvement.  相似文献

The development of effective and environmentally friendly methods for the green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) is a critical stage in the field of nanotechnology. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are significant due to their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties, as well as their numerous applications. Physical, chemical, and green synthesis approaches can all be used to produce AgNPs; however, synthesis using biological precursors, particularly plant-based green synthesis, has shown outstanding results. In recent years, owing to a combination of frequent droughts, unusual rainfall, salt-affected areas, and high temperatures, climate change has changed several ecosystems. Crop yields have decreased globally as a result of these changes in the environment. Green synthesized AgNPs role in boosting antioxidant defense mechanisms, methylglyoxal (MG) detoxification, and developing tolerance for abiotic stress-induced oxidative damage has been thoroughly described in plant species over the last decade. Although various studies on abiotic stress tolerance and metallic nanoparticles (NPs) in plants have been conducted, but the details of AgNPs mediated abiotic stress tolerance have not been well summarized. Therefore, the plant responses to abiotic stress need to be well understood and to apply the gained knowledge to increase stress tolerance by using AgNPs for crop plants. In this review, we outlined the green synthesis of AgNPs extracted from plant extract. We also have updates on the most important accomplishments through exogenous application of AgNPs to improve plant tolerance to drought, salinity, low and high-temperature stresses.  相似文献

Microbial decolorization and degradation of synthetic dyes: a review   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The synthesis of dyes and pigments used in textiles and other industries generate the hazardous wastes. A dye is used to impart color to materials of which it becomes an integral part. The waste generated during the process and operation of the dyes commonly found to contain the inorganic and organic contaminant leading to the hazard to ecosystem and biodiversity causing impact on the environment. The amount of azo dyes concentration present in wastewater varied from lower to higher concentration that lead to color dye effluent causing toxicity to biological ecosystem. The physico-chemical treatment does not remove the color and dye compound concentration. The decolorization of the dye takes place either by adsorption on the microbial biomass or biodegradation by the cells. Bioremediation takes place by anaerobic and/or aerobic process. The anaerobic process converts dye in toxic amino compounds which on further treatment with aerobic reaction convert the intermediate into CO2 biomass and inorganics. In the present review the decolorization and degradation of azo dyes by fungi, algae, yeast and bacteria have been cited along with the anaerobic to aerobic treatment processes. The factors affecting decolorization and biodegradation of azo dye compounds such as pH, temperature, dye concentration, effects of CO2 and Nitrogen, agitation, effect of dye structure, electron donor and enzymes involved in microbial decolorization of azo dyes have been discussed. This paper will have the application for the decolorization and degradation of azo dye compound into environmental friendly compounds.  相似文献
