In México the first human chronic chagasic case was recognized in 1940. In spite of an increasing number of cases detected since that time, Chagas disease in México has been poorly documented. In the present work we studied 617 volunteers subjects living in high and low endemic regions of Trypanosoma cruzi infection with seroprevalence of 22% and 4% respectively. Hemoculture performed in those seropositive subjects failed to demonstrate circulating parasites, however polymerase chain reaction identified up to 60% of them as positives. A higher level of anti-T. cruzi antibodies was observed in seropositive residents in high endemic region, in spite of similar parasite persistence (p < 0.05). On standard 12 leads electrocardiogram (ECG) 20% to 22% seropositive individuals from either region showed right bundle branch block or ventricular extrasystoles which were more prevalent in seropositive than in seronegative individuals (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the frequency or type of ECG abnormality was influenced by serologic status but not by endemicity or parasite persistence. Furthermore, Mexican indeterminate patients have a similar ECG pattern to those reported in South America.  相似文献

Background

Blood donor screening leads to large numbers of new diagnoses of Trypanosoma cruzi infection, with most donors in the asymptomatic chronic indeterminate form. Information on electrocardiogram (ECG) findings in infected blood donors is lacking and may help in counseling and recognizing those with more severe disease.

Objectives

To assess the frequency of ECG abnormalities in T.cruzi seropositive relative to seronegative blood donors, and to recognize ECG abnormalities associated with left ventricular dysfunction.

Methods

The study retrospectively enrolled 499 seropositive blood donors in São Paulo and Montes Claros, Brazil, and 483 seronegative control donors matched by site, gender, age, and year of blood donation. All subjects underwent a health clinical evaluation, ECG, and echocardiogram (Echo). ECG and Echo were reviewed blindly by centralized reading centers. Left ventricular (LV) dysfunction was defined as LV ejection fraction (EF)<0.50%.

Results

Right bundle branch block and left anterior fascicular block, isolated or in association, were more frequently found in seropositive cases (p<0.0001). Both QRS and QTc duration were associated with LVEF values (correlation coefficients −0.159,p<0.0003, and −0.142,p = 0.002) and showed a moderate accuracy in the detection of reduced LVEF (area under the ROC curve: 0.778 and 0.790, both p<0.0001). Several ECG abnormalities were more commonly found in seropositive donors with depressed LVEF, including rhythm disorders (frequent supraventricular ectopic beats, atrial fibrillation or flutter and pacemaker), intraventricular blocks (right bundle branch block and left anterior fascicular block) and ischemic abnormalities (possible old myocardial infarction and major and minor ST abnormalities). ECG was sensitive (92%) for recognition of seropositive donors with depressed LVEF and had a high negative predictive value (99%) for ruling out LV dysfunction.

Conclusions

ECG abnormalities are more frequent in seropositive than in seronegative blood donors. Several ECG abnormalities may help the recognition of seropositive cases with reduced LVEF who warrant careful follow-up and treatment.  相似文献

Cardiovascular risk factors in subjects with Helicobacter pylori infection   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Background. It has been proposed that Helicobacter pylori infection is related to cardiovascular disease, although this has not been fully investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate whether H. pylori in‐fection is associated with cardiovascular risk factors. Subjects and Methods. One thousand six hundred and fifty people undergoing annual medical checks at Shimane Institute of Health Science between September 1998 and August 1999 were enrolled. Gender, age, body mass index, habitual smoking and drinking, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum level of total cholesterol, triglyceride, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), blood glucose, leukocyte count and hemoglobin were compared between H. pylori seropositive and seronegative cases. Results. In H. pylori seropositive individuals, HDLC was significantly lower than that in seronegative individuals. After adjustment for possible confounding factors (gender, age, BMI, smoking and drinking habits), mean HDLC in H. pylori‐seropositive and seronegative individuals were 56.1 and 58.2 mg/dl, respectively (p < .005). The percentage of the elderly (over 50 years old) individuals with HDLC < 35 mg/dl in H. pylori seropositive and seronegative groups were 7.4% and 4.7%, respectively (p < .001). In addition, the lower HDLC level was accompanied by an increased leukocyte count. Conclusion. Long‐term infection with H. pylori may have an important role in decreasing the serum HDLC concentration.  相似文献

Cell extracts from EBV-genome-carrying cell lines inhibit the migration of leukocytes from EBV-positive but not seronegative healthy donors. In the present study extracts from EBV-negative lines and their own in vitro EBV-converted sublines were used to induce migration inhibition with leukocytes from seronegative and seropositive individuals. A clear difference was found between the extracts from EBV-negative and positive cell lines. Significant migration inhibition could be obtained with antigen(s) associated with the virus nonproducer state. Since EBNA is known to be expressed by all nonproducer EBV-genome-carrying cells, we have compared the effect of partially purified EBNA and correspondingly prepared mock-EBNA on the leukocyte migration. Purified EBNA inhibited the leukocyte migration of EBV seropositives, whereas mock-EBNA had no such effect.  相似文献

From an epidemiological point of view, Chagas disease and its reservoirs and vectors can present the following characteristics: (i) enzooty, maintained by wild animals and vectors, with broad occurrence from southern United States of America (USA) to southern Argentina and Chile (42ºN 49ºS), (ii) anthropozoonosis, when man invades the wild ecotope and becomes infected with Trypanosoma cruzi from wild animals or vectors or when the vectors and wild animals, especially marsupials, invade the human domicile and infect man, (iii) zoonosis-amphixenosis and exchanged infection between animals and humans by domestic vectors in endemic areas and (iv) zooanthroponosis, infection that is transmitted from man to animals, by means of domestic vectors, which is the rarest situation in areas endemic for Chagas disease. The characteristics of Chagas disease as an enzooty of wild animals and as an anthropozoonosis are seen most frequently in the Brazilian Amazon and in the Pan-Amazon region as a whole, where there are 33 species of six genera of wild animals: Marsupialia, Chiroptera, Rodentia, Edentata (Xenarthra), Carnivora and Primata and 27 species of triatomines, most of which infected with T. cruzi . These conditions place the resident populations of this area or its visitors - tourists, hunters, fishermen and especially the people whose livelihood involves plant extraction - at risk of being affected by Chagas disease. On the other hand, there has been an exponential increase in the acute cases of Chagas disease in that region through oral transmission of T. cruzi , causing outbreaks of the disease. In four seroepidemiological surveys that were carried out in areas of the microregion of the Negro River, state of Amazonas, in 1991, 1993, 1997 and 2010, we found large numbers of people who were serologically positive for T. cruzi infection. The majority of them and/or their relatives worked in piassava extraction and had come into contact with and were stung by wild triatomines in that area. Finally, a characteristic that is greatly in evidence currently is the migration of people with Chagas disease from endemic areas of Latin America to non-endemic countries. This has created a new dilemma for these countries: the risk of transmission through blood transfusion and the onus of controlling donors and treating migrants with the disease. As an enzooty of wild animals and vectors, and as an anthropozoonosis, Chagas disease cannot be eradicated, but it must be controlled by transmission elimination to man.  相似文献

Chagas disease is maintained in nature through the interchange of three cycles: the wild, peridomestic and domestic cycles. The wild cycle, which is enzootic, has existed for millions of years maintained between triatomines and wild mammals. Human infection was only detected in mummies from 4,000-9,000 years ago, before the discovery of the disease by Carlos Chagas in 1909. With the beginning of deforestation in the Americas, two-three centuries ago for the expansion of agriculture and livestock rearing, wild mammals, which had been the food source for triatomines, were removed and new food sources started to appear in peridomestic areas: chicken coops, corrals and pigsties. Some accidental human cases could also have occurred prior to the triatomines in peridomestic areas. Thus, triatomines progressively penetrated households and formed the domestic cycle of Chagas disease. A new epidemiological, economic and social problem has been created through the globalisation of Chagas disease, due to legal and illegal migration of individuals infected by Trypanosoma cruzi or presenting Chagas disease in its varied clinical forms, from endemic countries in Latin America to non-endemic countries in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, particularly to the United States of America and Spain. The main objective of the present paper was to present a general view of the interchanges between the wild, peridomestic and domestic cycles of the disease, the development of T. cruzi among triatomine, their domiciliation and control initiatives, the characteristics of the disease in countries in the Americas and the problem of migration to non-endemic countries.  相似文献

The etiology of ulcerative colitis (UC) is unknown, while an exacerbating factor of this disease is associated with infectious agents. Recently, Fusobacterium varium has been found in the mucosa of a significant number of patients with UC. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of F. varium infection based on serology, evaluate the relationship between F. varium seropositivity and UC, and determine the clinical characteristics of infected UC individuals. Seropositive patients were determined by immunoblotting with F. varium ATCC 8501 antigen. We also identified cross-reactive protein spots by peptide mass mapping analysis. These protein spots showed putative caseinolytic protease protein, putative translation elongation factor G, and putative enolase. Immunoblotting with F. varium antigen revealed signals with sera from 45 (40.2%) of the 112 UC patients and 20 (15.6%) of the 128 healthy controls, respectively ( P <0.01). In terms of disease activity, seropositive UC patients were more likely to have clinically severe disease than seronegative UC patients. Disease location in seropositive patients was more extensive than the seronegative patients. In conclusion, F. varium is a predominant infection in the UC population and is a potential pathogen of UC.  相似文献

The 83 members of the Celebes black macaque (Macaca nigra) colony were screened for viremia with simian acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (SAIDS) type 2 retrovirus and antibodies against the retrovirus. On the basis of this screening, the Celebes colony was divided into four groups: retrovirus-positive/seropositive (virus+/Ab+); retrovirus-negative/seropositive (virus-/Ab+); retrovirus-positive/seronegative (virus+/Ab-); and retrovirus-negative/seronegative (virus-/Ab-). Monkeys in the virus+/Ab+ group displayed more major clinical signs and required medication more times than monkeys in the other groups. In contrast, monkeys in the virus-/Ab- group had fewer health problems than monkeys in the other groups. The five monkeys that had surgically confirmed retroperitoneal fibromatosis (RF), palpable abdominal masses, or both, were in the virus+/Ab+ group. Some of the monkeys in groups with current or past retrovirus infection were well clinically. There were no statistically significant differences in the mitogen reactivities of mononuclear cells obtained from monkeys of the different groups.  相似文献

Ingestion of raw animal liver has been suggested as a possible mode of infection of human toxocariasis. We evaluated the relationship between toxocariasis and the ingestion of raw meat in patients with eosinophilia of unknown etiology. The study population consisted of 120 patients presenting with peripheral blood eosinophilia (>500 cells/microliter or >10% of the white blood cell count). They were divided into 2 groups: 104 seropositive patients based on a Toxocara excretory-secretory IgG ELISA and 16 seronegative patients. While 25.0% of seronegative patients had a recent history of eating raw cow liver, 87.5% of seropositive patients had this history. Multivariate statistical analysis showed that a recent history of eating raw cow liver was related to an increased risk of toxocariasis. Collectively, it is proposed that raw cow liver is a significant infection source of toxocariasis in the patients with eosinophilia of unknown etiology.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate whether blood serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) (5-HT) modulates musculoskeletal pain differently in seropositive and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement of seropositive RA (33 patients) or seronegative RA (28 patients) and 26 healthy individuals were included. TMJ pain, general musculoskeletal pain, plasma and serum 5-HT, acute phase reactants and thrombocyte count were investigated. RESULTS: The patients with seropositive RA had higher serum (median = 1130 nmol/l) and plasma (55 nmol/l) levels of 5-HT than the healthy individuals (704 nmol/l, p = 0.044 and 23 nmol/l, p < 0.001, respectively), and higher plasma levels of 5-HT than the seronegative patients (14 nmol/l, p < 0.001). There was no significant correlation between serum and plasma levels of 5-HT in any group. In the seropositive RA patients, positive correlations were found between serum levels of 5-HT and the number of painful mandibular movements (r(s) = 0.36, n = 33, p = 0.042), as well as pain on maximum mouth opening (r(s) = 0.41, n = 24, p = 0.047) and tenderness to digital palpation (r(s) = 0.49, n = 33, p = 0.003). In the healthy individuals, there was a negative correlation between plasma level of 5-HT and the TMJ pressure pain threshold (r(s) = -0.47, n = 20, p = 0.037). CONCLUSION: Peripheral serotonergic pain mechanisms seem to be activated by blood 5-HT in patients with seropositive RA, in contrast to seronegative patients.  相似文献

Two of the major problems facing the Amazon - human migration from the other areas and uncontrolled deforestation - constitute the greatest risk for the establishment of endemic Chagas disease in this part of Brazil. At least 18 species of triatomines had been found in the Brazilian Amazon, 10 of them infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, associated with numerous wild reservoirs. With wide-range deforestation, wild animals will perforce be driven into other areas, with tendency for triatomines to become adapted to alternative food sources in peri and intradomicilies. Serological surveys and cross-sectional studies for Chagas disease, carried out in rural areas of the Rio Negro, in the Brazilian Amazon, showed a high level of seropositivity for T. cruzi antibodies. A strong correlation of seroreactivity with the contact of gatherers of pia?ava fibers with wild triatomines could be evidenced.  相似文献

A survey was carried out to verify if an immunohistochemical method associated with agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) will establish a firm diagnosis of caprine paratuberculosis. One hundred and thirty-six goats were tested by AGID for antibodies against Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis at two different times: the first time 22 (19.1%) were positive and the second time 25 (18%). One seronegative goat with severe diarrhea and 5 seropositive goats, two of which showing similar clinical signs, were sacrificed and necropsied. Samples were taken from small intestine, liver, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes for bacteriological, histological and immunohistochemical examinations. M.a. paratuberculosis was isolated from intestine samples of 4 seropositive goats and from mesenteric lymph nodes of one seropositive goat; the microorganism was not isolated from samples of one seropositive and the seronegative animals. Ziehl Neelsen staining showed acid-fast bacilli in macrophages of the 5 seropositive animals and the immunohistochemical method for M. a. paratuberculosis detected bacterial antigen in the same samples.  相似文献

In 2001–2005 we sampled permanently marked big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) at summer roosts in buildings at Fort Collins, Colorado, for rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (RVNA). Seroprevalence was higher in adult females (17.9%, n = 2,332) than males (9.4%, n = 128; P = 0.007) or volant juveniles (10.2%, n = 738; P<0.0001). Seroprevalence was lowest in a drought year with local insecticide use and highest in the year with normal conditions, suggesting that environmental stress may suppress RVNA production in big brown bats. Seroprevalence also increased with age of bat, and varied from 6.2 to 26.7% among adult females at five roosts sampled each year for five years. Seroprevalence of adult females at 17 other roosts sampled for 1 to 4 years ranged from 0.0 to 47.1%. Using logistic regression, the only ranking model in our candidate set of explanatory variables for serological status at first sampling included year, day of season, and a year by day of season interaction that varied with relative drought conditions. The presence or absence of antibodies in individual bats showed temporal variability. Year alone provided the best model to explain the likelihood of adult female bats showing a transition to seronegative from a previously seropositive state. Day of the season was the only competitive model to explain the likelihood of a transition from seronegative to seropositive, which increased as the season progressed. We found no rabies viral RNA in oropharyngeal secretions of 261 seropositive bats or in organs of 13 euthanized seropositive bats. Survival of seropositive and seronegative bats did not differ. The presence of RVNA in serum of bats should not be interpreted as evidence for ongoing rabies infection.  相似文献

To confirm an association between cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and the presence of antibodies to Smith (Sm), to ribonucleoprotein (RNP), and to a component of the U1 ribonucleoproteins (U1-70 kD), we measured antibodies to these protein antigens using an enzyme immunoassay and an immunoblot. The antibodies were measured in the sera of 80 healthy subjects, one-half of whom were naturally CMV seropositive and one-half were CMV seronegative, and in eight subjects immunized with a live attenuated strain of CMV. None of the vaccinees developed antibodies to Sm, to RNP, or to U1-70 kD at either 4 or 12 months after immunization. Additionally, there was no statistically significant association between levels of antibodies to Sm or to RNP and between sera obtained from vaccinees, natural CMV seropositive individuals, and CMV seronegative individuals. One CMV seropositive serum and one CMV seronegative serum tested positive for antibodies to U1-70 kD. These data indicate that neither wild-type infection nor the live-attenuated Towne vaccine frequently induce autoantibody production.  相似文献

Intestinal parasitic pathogens in HIV/AIDS patients include Cryptosporidium sp, Cystoisospora sp, microsporidia and less commonly other parasites. The two most common microsporidia causing intestinal infection are Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis. Most of the Indian studies for intestinal parasitic infections in HIV/AIDS patients have not included microsporidia, due to difficult staining and identification of the parasite. The aim of the present study was to find the prevalence of intestinal microsporidiosis and their species identification along with correlation of CD4 count with parasite positivity and diarrhoea in HIV positive individuals. Stool samples of 363 individuals including 125 HIV seropositive patients with diarrhoea, 158 HIV seropositive patients without diarrhoea, 55 HIV seronegative patients with diarrhoea and 25 healthy controls were obtained from various out-patient departments and in-patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital from August 2008 to October 2009. The stool samples were subjected to examination by wet mount, modified acid fast stain for coccidian parasites and multiplex nested PCR for microsporidia. The overall prevalence of all intestinal parasites among HIV patients in our study was 26.5%. The prevalence of intestinal parasitic pathogens in HIV positive patients with diarrhoea was 43.2%. Microsporidia were the most common parasites detected (14%) in all patients, while in HIV infected patients 15.9% patients had microsporidia infection. The most common species causing intestinal microsporidiosis in our study was E. intestinalis (10.5%). In HIV seropositive individuals with diarrhoea, E. intestinalis was 20.8% and E. bieneusi 8.0% while in HIV-seropositive individuals without diarrhoea, E. intestinalis was 3.8% and E. bieneusi 1.9%. E. intestinalis was present in 10.9% of HIV negative individuals with diarrhoea in whom E. bieneusi was not found. There was a significant association between CD4 count ≤ 200/μl and intestinal parasite positivity. Thus, it can be concluded that intestinal microsporidiosis is under reported but an important disease in India. The predominant species in our study is E. intestinalis , in contrast to other parts of the world where E. bieneusi is more common.  相似文献

There are three major clonal lineages, types I, II, and III, of Toxoplasma gondii known to cause human toxoplasmosis worldwide. Toxoplasma gondii infections have, however, not been genotyped in Ghana. This study detected the clonal types infecting immune compromised and immune competent individuals in Accra, Ghana. Blood samples were obtained from 148 HIV seropositive pre-antiretroviral therapy individuals (0  CD4+ T-cell count/μl blood ≤ 200) at the Fevers Unit and 149 HIV seronegative apparently healthy blood donors at the blood bank, all of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Genomic DNA was extracted and multilocus genotyping conducted by nested PCR-RFLP analysis using GRA6, SAG3, and BTUB gene markers. Among the HIV seropositive participants, 54.7% (81/148) were T. gondii DNA positive for any of the markers. Out of the 81, 42.0% (34) were positive for SAG3 only, 30.9% (25) for GRA6 only, 24.7% (20) for both SAG3 and GRA6, and 2.5% (2) for SAG3, GRA6, and BTUB. Overall, 93.8% of the positives were of clonal type II, 1.2% type I, while 4.9% (4) were atypical or mixed types (I and II). In the healthy blood donors, prevalence of T. gondii DNA positivity was 3.4% (5/149) by SAG3 and/or GRA6; among them, 60.0% (3/5) were type I, and the remaining 40.0%, type II. This study showed a relatively high prevalence of active T. gondii infections in immune compromised patients and low prevalence in immune competent individuals in Accra. Type II was highly prevalent. Detection of T. gondii in blood donors raises public health concerns and screening for T. gondii should be considered.  相似文献

The occurrence of autochthonous cases of Chagas disease in the Amazon region of Brazil over recent decades has motivated an intensification of studies in this area. Different species of triatomines have been identified, and ten of these have be proven to be carriers of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi or " cruzi-like " parasites. Studies conducted in the municipalities of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos, located on the Upper and Middle of the Negro River, microregion of Negro River, state of Amazonas have confirmed not only that Rhodnius brethesi is present in the palm tree Leopoldinia piassaba, but also that this insect was recognized by palm fiber collectors. A morphological study of eyes, inter-ocular and inter-ocellar regions, antennae, buccula, labrum, rostrum, stridulatory sulcus and feet, including the apex of the tibia, spongy fossette and ctenidium was conducted by scanning electron microscopy. The buccula and the stridulatory sulcus presented notable differences in specimens of different genera and also of different species. These data make it possible to suggest that the details presented in these structures can be included as diagnostic characteristics to be used in new dichotomous keys, thereby contributing towards studies of taxonomy and systematics and furnishing backing for comparative analysis of specimens collected from different localities.  相似文献

AIDS restriction genes have been defined in which allelic variations have been shown to influence infection or disease progression. Members of the APOBEC family of cellular polynucleotide cytidine deaminases (e.g., APOBEC3G) have been identified as a host factor that inhibits HIV-1 replication. It deaminates cytidine to uridine in nascent minus-strand viral DNA, inducing G-to-A hypermutation in the plus-strand viral DNA. The impact of codon-changing variant APOBEC3G H186R polymorphism on HIV-1 susceptibility and progression is not clear. We conducted genetic risk association study in HIV-1-exposed seronegative (HES; n = 50) individuals, HIV-1 seronegative (HSN; n = 320) healthy control, and HIV-1 seropositive patients (HSP; n = 190). The APOBEC3G H186R genotypes were identified by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method in DNA extracted from peripheral blood and confirmed by direct sequencing the randomly selected 58 samples. Frequency of rare homozygous RR (mutant type) and HR (heterozygous mutant) genotype was 0% while HH (wild type) was 100% among North Indians. In conclusion, we demonstrated that no genetic H186R polymorphism in exon 4 of APOBEC3G gene is found and therefore neither associated with differential susceptibility to HIV-1 infection/progression among North Indians.  相似文献

Introduction

Studies employing serological, DTH or conventional PCR techniques suggest a vast proportion of Leishmania infected individuals living in regions endemic for Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) remain asymptomatic. This study was designed to assess whether quantitative PCR (qPCR) can be used for detection of asymptomatic or early Leishmania donovani infection and as a predictor of progression to symptomatic disease.

Methods

The study included 1469 healthy individuals living in endemic region (EHC) including both serology-positive and -negative subjects. TaqMan based qPCR assay was done on peripheral blood of each subject using kDNA specific primers and probes.

Results

A large proportion of EHC 511/1469 (34.78%) showed qPCR positivity and 56 (3.81% of 1469 subjects) had more than 1 calculated parasite genome/ml of blood. However, the number of individuals with parasite load above 5 genomes/ml was only 20 (1.36% of 1469). There was poor agreement between serological testing and qPCR (k = 0.1303), and 42.89% and 31.83% EHC were qPCR positive in seropositive and seronegative groups, respectively. Ten subjects had developed to symptomatic VL after 12 month of their follow up examination, of which eight were initially positive according to qPCR and among these, five had high parasite load.

Discussion

Thus, qPCR can help us to detect significant early parasitaemia, thereby assisting us in recognition of potential progressors to clinical disease. This test could facilitate early intervention, decreased morbidity and mortality, and possibly interruption of disease transmission.  相似文献

Many immunological aspects of pregnancy, such as the role played by gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) in abortion, are not well understood. Neospora caninum is an intracellular protozoan considered to be among the main causes of abortion in cattle worldwide. The present study analyzes the interaction between IFN-gamma production and N. caninum infection in naturally infected pregnant cows. Data were obtained from 126 pregnant cows: 86 seropositive and 40 seronegative for the parasite. Pregnancy diagnosis and blood sample collection were performed on days 40, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 post-insemination or until the time of abortion detection. Plasma was tested for antibodies against N. caninum and IFN-gamma. Interferon-gamma was detected at some point along the pregnancy in 16 (19%) of the 86 Neospora-seropositive cows yet was undetectable in the 40 seronegative animals. Of the 126 pregnancies examined, 22 (17.5%) ended in abortion. Abortion occurred in 24.4% of seropositive cows (21/86) and in 2.5% of seronegative animals (1/40). Significant (P<0.0001) interaction was observed between Neospora-seropositivity and IFN-gamma production. Based on the odds ratio, the risk of abortion was 15.6 times higher in seropositive cows not producing IFN-gamma than in seronegative animals, whereas neosporosis had no effect in seropositive cows with IFN-gamma production. A significant (P=0.001) negative effect of IFN-gamma production on the Neospora titer was furthermore observed in the 65 non-aborting seropositive animals. These results indicate that IFN-gamma production affords protection against abortion in Neospora-infected cows and also point to a reduced humoral immune response to N. caninum during gestation in cows producing IFN-gamma.  相似文献
