We characterized the leaf anatomical characteristics and maximum assimilation rates of five neotropical Moraceae of different genera and successional positions. Plants were grown under different light levels and transferred to high light, simulating canopy openings. Total blade thickness increased with irradiance among all species, and thicker blades were developed when plants were switched. However, blade thickness, and the extent to which it was modified, was independent of the species’ successional position and did not predict photosynthetic performance. Palisade thickness was a good predictor of maximum photosynthetic rate, but only on a species-specific basis. Overall, leaf thickening with increasing irradiance was associated more with structural than with photosynthetic changes. The early successionals Cecropia obtusifolia and Ficus insipida exhibited similarly high photosynthetic plasticity and acclimation values, but differed in their leaf anatomical traits. The late successional Poulsenia armata produced the most anatomically plastic leaves, but failed to acclimate either anatomically or photosynthetically when transferred to higher light levels.  相似文献

It is important to understand the ecophysiological characters of plants when exploring mechanisms underlying species substitution in the process of plant succession. In the present study, we selected 34 woody species from different stages of secondary succession in subtropical forests of southern China, and measured their hydraulic conductivity, gas exchange rates, leaf nutrients and drought‐tolerance traits such as xylem resistance to cavitation, turgor loss point and carbon isotope ratio. Principal component analysis revealed that early‐, mid‐ and late‐successional species were significantly separated along axis 1, which was strongly associated with hydraulic‐photosynthetic coordination. In contrast to species distributed in late‐successional forest, early‐successional species had the highest hydraulic conductivity, net photosynthetic rates, photosynthetic nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies, but had the lowest photosynthetic water‐use efficiency. However, changes of the measured drought‐tolerance traits of the 34 species along the succession did not demonstrate a clear trend – no significant correlations between these traits and plant successional stages were found. Moreover, the trade‐off between hydraulic efficiency and safety was not identified. Taken together, our results suggested that hydraulic efficiency and photosynthetic function, rather than drought tolerance, play an important role in species distributions along plant succession in subtropical forests.  相似文献

Summary We evaluated both the photosynthetic plasticity and acclimation to light of seedlings of five co-occurring tropical tree species in the Moraceae,Cecropia obtusifolia, Ficus insipida, Poulsenia armata, Brosimum alicastrum, andPseudolmedia oxyphyllaria. Distinct differences in the species' abilities to respond to increasing irradiance correlated with their known habitat breadths and successional status. The early successinalsCecropia andFicus exhibited the highest photosynthetic rates and conductance values in high light. There was a several-fold difference in assimilation across light regimes, consistent with a high physiological plasticity. When individuals grown at low light were transferred to higher irradiances, seedlings of bothCecropia andFicus produced leaves which photosynthesized at rates as high or higher than those of plants continuously grown in high light, indicating a high photosynthetic acclimation potential. In contrast, the late successionals were characterized by both a more restricted physiological plasticity and acclimation potential. Higher light levels resulted in only moderate increases in assimilation among the late successionals, and onlyBrosimum acclimated fully to increased irradiances. NeitherPoulsenia norPseudolmedia increased appreciably their photosynthetic rates when transferred to high light. This suggests that acclimation potential cannot always be inferred from plasticity responses, and calls for a reevaluation of arguments developed solely from plasticity studies. Finally, differences between the early and late successional species in the allocation of nitrogen into RuBP carboxylase and thylakoid nitrogen pools or non-photosynthetic compounds are suggested by the distinct relationships between maximum photosynthetic capacity and nitrogen content.

Seasonal changes in leaf gas exchange, assimilation response to light and leaf area were monitored in bearing and nonbearing pistachio shoots. Shoot bearing status did not directly affect leaf photosynthetic rate. However, photosynthetic light-response curves strongly varied during the season demonstrating the dominant effect of the tree’s seasonal phenology on assimilation. Early in the season low photosynthetic rates were associated with high rates of dark respiration indicating limited photosynthesis in the young leaves. As leaves matured, dark respiration decreased and assimilation reached maximum values. Photosynthetic efficiency was strongly reduced late in the season due to leaf age and senescence. Fruit load precipitated an early leaf senescence and drop that resulted in a 53% decrease in leaf area in bearing vs. nonbearing shoots, strongly decreasing the seasonal photosynthetic performance of bearing shoots. Bearing shoots produced a 26% lower seasonal carbon gain compared to nonbearing shoots.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Light extinction through crowns of canopy trees determines light availability at lower levels within forests. The goal of this paper is the exploration of foliage distribution and light extinction in crowns of five canopy tree species in relation to their shoot architecture, leaf traits (mean leaf angle, life span, photosynthetic characteristics) and successional status (from pioneers to persistent). METHODS: Light extinction was examined at three hierarchical levels of foliage organization, the whole crown, the outermost canopy and the individual shoots, in a tropical moist forest with direct canopy access with a tower crane. Photon flux density and cumulative leaf area index (LAI) were measured at intervals of 0.25-1 m along multiple vertical transects through three to five mature tree crowns of each species to estimate light extinction coefficients (K). RESULTS: Cecropia longipes, a pioneer species with the shortest leaf life span, had crown LAI <0.5. Among the remaining four species, crown LAI ranged from 2 to 8, and species with orthotropic terminal shoots exhibited lower light extinction coefficients (0.35) than those with plagiotropic shoots (0.53-0.80). Within each type, later successional species exhibited greater maximum LAI and total light extinction. A dense layer of leaves at the outermost crown of a late successional species resulted in an average light extinction of 61% within 0.5 m from the surface. In late successional species, leaf position within individual shoots does not predict the light availability at the individual leaf surface, which may explain their slow decline of photosynthetic capacity with leaf age and weak differentiation of sun and shade leaves. CONCLUSION: Later-successional tree crowns, especially those with orthotropic branches, exhibit lower light extinction coefficients, but greater total LAI and total light extinction, which contribute to their efficient use of light and competitive dominance.  相似文献

The morphological and physiological plasticity to 6 light conditions was investigated for seedlings of 4 tree species dominating at different successional serals in subalpine coniferous forests in eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. Abies faxoniana is a late successional species, while Betula albo-sinensis is a pioneer tree species, with Picea asperata and Acer davidii among other mid-late successional species. To compare the responses of photosynthetic characters to different growth light conditions, the seedlings were potted and placed in artificially shaded chambers with gradients of 100%, 55%, 40%, 25%, 15% and 7% of the full sunlight, respectively. During two and a half years' cultivation, various morphological and photosynthetic parameters were measured and analyzed. The results were: 1) all seedlings of the four species under the low growth light conditions showed decrease in root collar diameter, relative growth rate, leaf thickness, root mass ratio, leaf area-based photosynthetic capacity, dark respiration rate, light saturation point and light compensation point, while showed increase in specific leaf area, above-ground to under-ground mass ratio, specific stem length, leaf mass ratio and stem mass ratio; 2) under most light conditions, A. faxoniana of the two conifers revealed lower values in both leaf area-based photosynthetic capacity and respiration rates than P. asperata; the same fact held true for the two broad-leaved trees with lower values observed in B. albo-sinensis; 3) under higher light conditions, relative growth rates of P. asperata and B. albo-sinensis got higher values than those of A. faxoniana and A. davidii, while contrary results were obtained under lower light regimes; 4) the means of phenotypic plastic indices of the eleven morphological and physiological parameters of P. asperata and B. albo-sinensis were higher than those of A. faxoniana and A. davidii, respectively. The findings indicate that A. faxoniana has better adaptation to low light regimes, but as a shade-tolerant species, it is not so adapted to low light regimes as the trees of earlier successional serals, especially P. asperata and B. albo-sinensis. Of the four tree species, physiological plastic indices were higher than morphological plastic indices, suggesting that morphological plasticity plays an important role in their adaptation to different growth light conditions. The results also support the hypothesis that ecophysiological traits of tree species determine their successional status and associate habitats of their seedlings.  相似文献

Hawaiian lobeliads have radiated into habitats from open alpine bogs to densely shaded rainforest interiors, and show corresponding adaptations in steady-state photosynthetic light responses and associated leaf traits. Shaded environments are not uniformly dark, however, but punctuated by sunflecks that carry most of the photosynthetically active light that strikes plants. We asked whether lobeliads have diversified in their dynamic photosynthetic light responses and how dynamic responses influence daily leaf carbon gain. We quantified gas exchange and dynamic light regimes under field conditions for ten species representing each major Hawaiian sublineage. Species in shadier habitats experienced shorter and less numerous sunflecks: average sunfleck length varied from 1.4 ± 1.7 min for Cyanea floribunda in shaded forest understories to 31.2 ± 2.1 min for Trematolobelia kauaiensis on open ridges. As expected, the rate of photosynthetic induction increased significantly toward shadier sites, with assimilation after 60 s rising from ca. 30% of fully induced rates in species from open environments to 60% in those from densely shaded habitats. Uninduced light use efficiency—actual photosynthesis versus that expected under steady-state conditions—increased from 10 to 70% across the same gradient. In silico transplants—modeling daily carbon gain using one species’ photosynthetic light response in its own and other species’ dynamic light regimes—demonstrated the potential adaptive nature of species differences: understory Cyanea pilosa in its light regimes outperformed gap-dwelling Clermontia parviflora, while Clermontia in its light regimes outperformed Cyanea. The apparent crossover in daily photosynthesis occurred at about the same photon flux density where dominance shifts from Cyanea to Clermontia in the field. Our results further support our hypothesis that the lobeliads have diversified physiologically across light environments in Hawaiian ecosystems and that those shifts appear to maximize the carbon gain of each species in its own environment. It is widely recognized that colonists and competitors dominate early and late succession, respectively, with selected species having different colonizing and competitive abilities. However, it remains unknown whether colonizing and competitive ability can determine species abundance directly over succession. The data for five key functional traits were collected (photosynthesis rate, leaf turgor loss point, leaf proline content, seed mass, and seed germination rate), which are direct indicators of plant competitive and colonizing abilities including growth, drought and cold stress resistance, dispersal, and seed dormancy. Here, we tested the effects of colonizing and competitive abilities on species abundance, by employing a linear mixed‐effects model to examine the shifts in the relationship between species abundance and these five colonization and competition‐related traits in species‐rich subalpine secondary successional meadows (at 4, 6, 10, 13 years of age, and undisturbed, respectively) of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. The abundant species at the early‐successional meadows tend to have high photosynthetic rate, high leaf proline content, low seed mass, and seed germination rate for having high colonizing ability, but low competitive ability. By contrast, late‐successional communities tend to be dominated by species with high competitive ability, but low colonizing ability, indicated by large seeds, high seed germination rate, low photosynthetic rate, and leaf proline content. The observed directional shifts in the relationships between traits (photosynthetic rate, leaf proline content, seed mass, and seed germination rate) and abundance with successional age, bring two new understandings of community assembly during succession of subalpine meadows in the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. First, it discloses that the differences in species abundance over succession can be directly attributed to differences in colonizing and competitive abilities of different species. Second, it expands the effects of multiple life historical differences including growth, resource competitive ability, cold stress resistance, dispersal, and seed germination strategy, represented by functional traits on community assembly along succession, that is, from the species to the community level.  相似文献

Photosynthetic induction state, stomatal conductance and light regulation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (rubisco) were examined for leaves in a mature, closed soybean (Glycine max) canopy (leaf area index approximately 5) with the objective to determine the extent to which these factors may be limiting the capacity to respond to light transients during sunflecks. When sampled along a vertical gradient, leaves near the bottom of the canopy had lower rubisco contents and chlorophyll a/b ratios as compared with upper leaves. Leaves sampled at midcanopy showed a wide variation in photosynthetic induction state (ratio of the photosynthetic rate achieved after 1 minute exposure to high light to the steady-state assimilation rate achieved after 20 minutes exposure). Both photosynthetic induction state and the initial rubisco activity varied in parallel with stomatal conductance. By contrast there was no correlation between total rubisco activity and stomatal conductance. The results indicate that induction state, as determined by the light regulation of both rubisco activity and stomatal conductance, is an important limitation to the ability of leaves in a soybean canopy to respond to light transients that occur during sunflecks.  相似文献

Hawaiian endemic tree Acacia koa is a model for heteroblasty with bipinnately compound leaves and phyllodes. Previous studies suggested three hypotheses for their functional differentiation: an advantage of leaves for early growth or shade tolerance, and an advantage of phyllodes for drought tolerance. We tested the ability of these hypotheses to explain differences between leaf types for potted plants in 104 physiological and morphological traits, including gas exchange, structure and composition, hydraulic conductance, and responses to varying light, intercellular CO2, vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and drought. Leaf types were similar in numerous traits including stomatal pore area per leaf area, leaf area‐based gas exchange rates and cuticular conductance. Each hypothesis was directly supported by key differences in function. Leaves had higher mass‐based gas exchange rates, while the water storage tissue in phyllodes contributed to greater capacitance per area; phyllodes also showed stronger stomatal closure at high VPD, and higher maximum hydraulic conductance per area, with stronger decline during desiccation and recovery with rehydration. While no single hypothesis completely explained the differences between leaf types, together the three hypotheses explained 91% of differences. These findings indicate that the heteroblasty confers multiple benefits, realized across different developmental stages and environmental contexts.  相似文献

Abstract Mortality, growth, gas exchange and biomass distribution were measured in the seedlings of 12 Chilean temperate rainforest angiosperm trees in two contrasting artificial light environments (150 and 12 μmoles m?2 s?1), in order to explore life history diversity in this forest type, and examine the physiological and/or morphological traits associated with interspecific variation in seedling performance. Gas exchange traits were measured only in the high‐light treatment (150 μmoles m?2 s?1), owing to the very small size of leaves in the low‐light treatment. Relative growth rates (RGR) in high light were strongly correlated with photosynthetic capacity (P< 0.0001). Mortality rates in low light had a strong positive correlation with light compensation point (P = 0.007) and photosynthetic capacity (P = 0.004). Furthermore, high‐light RGR was strongly positively correlated with low‐light mortality (P = 0.001). Biomass distribution traits showed little relationship with mortality or growth within either light level, except for a marginally significant positive correlation (P = 0.04) between leaf area ratio and mortality in low light. In view of the large interspecific differences in final size, the weak relationships between biomass distribution parameters and plant performance could be partially attributable to ontogenetic drift in these traits. Among taxa with high mortality rates in low light, short‐lived species (e.g. Aristotelia chilensis) had lower light compensation points, had greater phenotypic plasticity and grew much faster in both light environments than did longer‐lived species (Nothofagus dombeyi, Weinmannia trichosperma, Eucryphia cordifolia). Results support the view that survival of first‐year seedlings in low light is not enhanced by morphological traits that maximize growth potential (e.g. high leaf area ratio), and that leaf‐level gas exchange traits have an important role as determinants of interspecific variation in seedling performance. However, the limited range of interspecific variation observed in light compensation points indicates that other traits apart from those that we measured (e.g. carbon storage) must also be involved in seedling shade tolerance differences. The weak relationship between longevity and shade tolerance level among our 12 species suggests that it may not be feasible to ordinate life histories of Chilean temperate rainforest trees on a single axis of trait variation.  相似文献

Measurements of leaf gas exchange were made in contrasting wooded ecosystems in West Africa. Measurements were made on 10 species: seven from humid rain forest in Cameroon and three from the semi-arid Sahelian zone in Niger. For each species, two models of photosynthesis were fitted: the first based on a rectangular hyperbolic response to photosynthetic photon flux density (Q), and the second the biochemical model of Farquhar et al. (1980). In both communities, the species studied could be divided into those characteristic of early and late successional stages, but photosynthetic parameters were not closely related to successional stage. The data identified significant relationships between V cmax and leaf nutrient (N and P) content when expressed on an area basis. Variation in leaf mass per unit area correlated with canopy exposure and dominated the leaf nutrient signal. Statistical analysis suggested weakly that leaf gas exchange was more limited by P than N at the rain forest site.  相似文献

Herbivory has significant impacts on individual plants and plant communities, both at ecological and evolutionary time scales. In this context, this study aims to evaluate herbivore damage and its relationship with leaf chemical and structural traits, nutritional status, and forest structural complexity along a successional gradient. We predicted that trees in early successional stages support conservative traits related to drought tolerance (high specific leaf mass and phenolics), whereas trees in light-limited, late successional stages tend to enhance light acquisition strategies (high nitrogen content). We sampled 261 trees from 26 species in 15 plots (50 × 20 m; five per successional stage). From each tree, twenty leaves were collected for leaf trait measures. Phenolic content increased whereas specific leaf mass and nitrogen content decreased from early to late stages. However, leaf damage did not differ among successional stages. Our results partially corroborate the hypothesis that early successional plants in tropical dry forests exhibit leaf traits involved in the conservative use of water. The unexpected decrease in nitrogen content along the chronosequence is likely related to the fact that thinner leaves with low specific leaf mass could have less nitrogen-containing mesophyll per unit area. Mechanisms affecting herbivory intensity varied across scales: at the species level, leaf damage was negatively correlated with tannin concentration and specific leaf mass; at the plot level, leaf damage was positively affected by forest structural complexity. Herbivory patterns in tropical forests are difficult to detect because abiotic factors and multiple top-down and bottom-up forces directly and indirectly affect herbivores.  相似文献

Summary The photosynthetic response to sunflecks was investigated in the fern Polypodium virginianum growing on cliff edges of the Niagara Escarpment, in southern Ontario, Canada. Ferns were exposed to natural precipitation, continuous watering, or continuous drought prior to exposure to artificial sunflecks. The results were analyzed using temperature, humidity and previous exposure to light as covariates. The response to sunflecks was extremely rapid and showed no measurable induction period in the field. Controlled experiments completed in the laboratory showed exceptionally short induction periods. Previous exposure to sunflecks, and desiccation did not influence the time constants of response to sunflecks although drying did reduce maximum rates of CO2 exchange. Polypodium virginianum shows an extremely rapid response to fluctuations in the supply of light, and this is interpreted to be advantageous to this species because of the array of extremely hostile conditions that occur at cliff edges.  相似文献

Invasive species are frequently found in recently disturbed sites. To examine how these disturbance-dependent invasive species exploit resource pulses resulting from disturbance, twelve physiological and morphological traits, including age-dependent responsiveness in leaf traits to nitrogen pulse, were compared between Bischofia javanica, an invasive tree species in Ogasawara islands, and three native Ogasawara species, each having a different successional status. When exposed to a nitrogen pulse, invasive B. javanica showed higher increases in photosynthetic capacity, leaf area, epidermal cell number and cell size in leaves of broad age classes, and root nitrogen absorption ability than two native mid-/late or late-successional species, but showed no particular superiority to a native pioneer species in these responses. Under low nitrogen, however, it showed the largest relative growth rate among the four species, while the native pioneer showed the lowest growth. From these results, we concluded that the combination of moderately high responsiveness to resource pulses and the ability to maintain steady growth under resource limitations may give B. javanica a competitive advantage over a series of native species with different successional status from early to late-successional stages.  相似文献

Light gradients within tree canopies play a major role in the distribution of plant resources that define the photosynthetic capacity of sun and shade leaves. However, the biochemical and diffusional constraints on gas exchange in sun and shade leaves in response to light remain poorly quantified, but critical for predicting canopy carbon and water exchange. To investigate the CO2 diffusion pathway of sun and shade leaves, leaf gas exchange was coupled with concurrent measurements of carbon isotope discrimination to measure net leaf photosynthesis (An), stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) in Eucalyptus tereticornis trees grown in climate controlled whole‐tree chambers. Compared to sun leaves, shade leaves had lower An, gm, leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity (Amax) but gs was similar. When light intensity was temporarily increased for shade leaves to match that of sun leaves, both gs and gm increased, and An increased to values greater than sun leaves. We show that dynamic physiological responses of shade leaves to altered light environments have implications for up‐scaling leaf level measurements and predicting whole canopy carbon gain. Despite exhibiting reduced photosynthetic capacity, the rapid up‐regulation of gm with increased light enables shade leaves to respond quickly to sunflecks.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Leaf life span, photosynthetic parameters and defensive traits were compared across seven species of deciduous broad-leaved tree seedlings native to northern Japan to test the "cost-benefit hypothesis" that more productive leaves are more susceptible to herbivore attack than less productive leaves. METHODS: Studies were made on three early successional species, Alnus hirsuta, Betula maximowicziana and Betula platyphylla "japonica"; one mid-successional species, Ostrya japonica, and three late-successional species, Carpinus cordata, Quercus mongolica 'grosseserrata' and Acer mono. Photosynthetic parameters and defensive traits (total phenolics, condensed tannin and toughness) of leaves were measured for each species, and a bioassay test with Eri silkmoth larvae (Samia cynthia ricini) was undertaken to evaluate differences between species in susceptibility to herbivore attack. KEY RESULTS: Early successional species have a shorter leaf life span (62-88 d) than late successional species (155-187 d). Leaf nitrogen content and light-saturated photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area (P(sat)-area) and per unit leaf mass (P(sat)-mass) were negatively correlated with leaf life span. The nitrogen content of early successional species was about 30 mg g(-1) and that of late successional species was about 16 mg g(-1). Leaf toughness and the C/N ratio were positively correlated with leaf life span, although condensed tannin was not correlated with leaf life span. The bioassay test showed that the number of days the larvae survived was negatively correlated with leaf life span. Average survival of larvae feeding on leaves of A. hirsuta, which has the shortest leaf life span, was 14.4 d and that of Q. mongolica, which has the longest leaf life span, was 6.6 d. The number of days of larval survival was positively correlated with leaf nitrogen content. There was no correlation between days of larval survival and defensive traits. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that species with a shorter leaf life span have higher photosynthetic productivity and are more susceptible to herbivore attack than species with a longer leaf life span. This supports the "cost-benefit hypothesis".  相似文献
