The aim of this work is to quantify the occurrence of an anticipatory mechanism in the control of quiet standing by measuring the lag between the myoelectric activity of the lateral gastrocnemius muscle and the stabilometric signal, as well as to determine the influence of the muscle fatigue on this process. Stabilometric and electromyographic (EMG) signals were synchronously collected from 22 subjects. Gastrocnemius fatigue was induced by a sustained plantar flexed posture until muscle failure. The data acquisition lasted for 120 s before and after the induced fatigue. After mean removal, the root mean square values of the EMG (RMS-EMG) were calculated for each 20 ms period. The normalized cross-correlation function was estimated to find the time delay between RMS-EMG and stabilometric signals. Anticipation values up to 1.62 s were found both before and after fatigue conditions (p < 0.05), indicating that this mechanism plays an important role in body sway control. The fatigue caused a significant increase in the latency between the myoelectric activity of the gastrocnemius muscle and the movements of the center of pressure (p < 0.05).  相似文献

We collected 3D ultrasound images of the medial gastrocnemius muscle belly (MG) in 16 children with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy (SHCP) (mean age: 7.8 years; range: 4–12) and 15 typically-developing (TD) children (mean age: 9.5 years; range: 4–13). All children with SHCP had limited passive dorsiflexion range on the affected side with the knee extended (mean ± 1SD: −9.3° ± 11.8). Scans were taken of both legs with the ankle joint at its resting angle (RA) and at maximum passive dorsiflexion (MD), with the knee extended. RA and MD were more plantar flexed (p < 0.05) in children with SHCP than in TD children.

We measured the volumes and lengths of the MG bellies. We also measured the length of muscle fascicles in the mid-portion of the muscle belly and the angle that the fascicles made with the deep aponeurosis of the muscle. Volumes were normalised to the subject’s body mass; muscle lengths and fascicle lengths were normalised to the length of the fibula.

Normalised MG belly lengths in the paretic limb were shorter than the non-paretic side at MD (p = 0.0001) and RA (p = 0.0236). Normalised muscle lengths of the paretic limb were shorter than those in TD children at both angles (p = 0.0004; p = 0.0003). However, normalised fascicle lengths in the non-paretic and paretic limbs were similar to those measured in TD children (p > 0.05). When compared to the non-paretic limb, muscle volume was reduced in the paretic limb (p < 0.0001), by an average of 28%, and normalised muscle volume in the paretic limb was smaller than in the TD group (p < 0.0001).

The MG is short and small in the paretic limb of children with SHCP. The altered morphology is not due to a decrease in fascicle length. We suggest that MG deformity in SHCP is caused by lack of cross-sectional growth.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (c–PAHs) in complex mixtures in ambient air on DNA damage (chromosomal aberrations) in occupationally exposed subjects measured as percent of aberrant cells (% AB.C.).

There were in total 203 exposed subjects and 150 respective controls in the whole project, allocated in three different European cities – Kosice (Slovakia), Prague (Czech Republic) and Sofia (Bulgaria). The studied population from Kosice (Slovakia) consisted of 106 subjects. From these 51 were exposed policemen and 55 were controls. The Czech population comprised 52 exposed policemen and 50 controls. In Bulgaria, there were two equally numerous exposed groups: 50 policemen and 50 professional bus drivers together with 45 controls. According to personal monitoring, policemen and bus drivers in the Bulgarian capital Sofia were exposed to the highest levels of c-PAHs amongst the exposed subject groups in the cities (45.3 ± 25.9 ng/m3 in policemen resp. 36.1 ± 31.6 ng/m3 in bus drivers in Sofia, 26.8 ± 39.8 ng/m3 for policemen in Kosice and 11.9 ± 11.2 ng/m3 for policemen in Prague), compared to the respective controls (24.9 ± 17.7 ng/m3 for controls in Sofia, 7.9 ± 3.8 ng/m3 for controls in Kosice and 6.2 ± 3.6 ng/m3 for controls in Prague).

We observed the following frequency of % AB.C. scored by conventional method: 2.60 ± 2.64 in exposed policemen and 2.14 ± 1.61 in controls in Kosice (p = n.s.); 2.33 ± 1.53 in exposed policemen and 1.94 ± 1.28 in controls in Prague (p = n.s.); 3.04 ± 1.64 in exposed policemen, respectively, 3.60 ± 1.63 in exposed bus drivers and 1.79 ± 0.77 in the control group in Sofia (p < 0.05, respectively, p < 0.05).

According to data from multiple regression analysis, and group comparison of smokers versus nonsmokers in Sofia also cigarette smoking (p = 0.055) and the age (p = 0.020) seem to play an important role within the aberrant cell formation in addition to the occupational c-PAHs exposure (p = 0.000). Smoking status was the modifying factor for % AB.C. in Kosice (p = 0.020) after multiple regression approach was employed.

In summary, we can say that subjects occupationally exposed to higher levels of c-PAHs in ambient air in Sofia are at greater genotoxic risk compared to those working indoors.  相似文献

This aim of this study is to provide quantitative analyses of asymmetrical movements between affected and unaffected limbs for hemiparetic subjects in a cycling ergometer. To acquire kinesiological and kinematical data, electromyography (EMG) of quadriceps muscles in the both legs as well as crank positions under three cycling workloads were recorded. The symmetry index (SI) was designed to measure the similarity between muscle activities recorded from affected and unaffected limbs. Using kinematical information of the crank position, the cycling unsmoothness (denoted as roughness index, RI) can be derived from the curvature of the instantaneous cycling speed. Thirteen hemiparetic subjects following a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and eight able-bodied subjects participated in this study. With total symmetry at SI = 1, the average SIs of hemiparetic subjects (0.66 ± 0.18) were significantly lower (p < 0.01) than those of normal subjects (0.91 ± 0.08) but no significant difference found among three workloads. From the average RI, subjects with hemiparesis exhibited less smooth cycling movements compared to normal group (p < 0.01). Non-parametric Friedman and Wilcoxon tests of RIs further indicated that the workload factors are significantly different only for hemiparetic group (p < 0.01). No significant difference between lower workloads in RIs showed that the CVA subjects’ sound side alone can execute most of the cycling load with minimal involvement of the affected side under lower workload condition. When cycling at a heavier load, however, it is essential to force the affected limb to assist in the pedaling, thus accomplishing an effective cycling exercise. By combining these two quantitative indices, we can observe the kinesiological measurement of the symmetry of EMG phasic activities from SI and the kinematical cycling smoothness in a coordinated movement from RI, which could provide a clinical guideline for cycling exercises for hemiparetic subjects.  相似文献

Electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mechanical tension are directly related during isometric contraction. Maximal voluntary isometric contractions are typically elicited through two different procedures; resisting a load, which is eccentric in nature, and contracting against an immovable object, which is concentric in nature. A wealth of literature exists indicating that EMG amplitude during concentric contractions is greater than that of eccentric contractions of the same magnitude. However, the effects of different methods to elicit isometric contraction on EMG amplitude have yet to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to compare EMG amplitudes under different loading configurations designed to elicit isometric muscle contraction. Twenty healthy volunteers (10 males and 10 females, age = 23 ± 2 yrs, height = 1.7 ± 0.09 m, mass = 69.9 + 16.8 kg) performed a maximal voluntary plantarflexion effort for which the vertical ground reaction force (GRFv) sampled from a force plate and surface EMG of the soleus were recorded. Participants then performed isometric plantarflexion at 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% GRFvmax in a seated position, from a neutral ankle position, under two different counterbalanced isometric loading conditions (concentric and eccentric). For concentric loading conditions, the subject contracted against an immovable resistance to the specified %GRFv identified via visual and auditory feedback. For eccentric loading conditions, subjects contracted against an applied load placed on the distal anterior thigh that produced the specified %GRFv. This applied load had the tendency to force the ankle into dorsiflexion. Therefore, plantarflexion force, in an attempt to maintain the ankle in a neutral position, resisted lengthening of the plantarflexor musculature, thus representing eccentric loading during an isometric contraction. Mean EMG amplitude was compared across loading levels and types using a 2 (loading type: concentric, eccentric) × 4 (loading level: 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% GRFv) repeated-measures ANOVA. The main effect for loading level was significant (p = 0.007). However, the main effect for loading type, and the loading type × loading level interaction were non-significant (p > 0.05). The present findings provide evidence that isometric muscle contractions loaded in either concentric or eccentric manners elicit similar EMG amplitudes, and are therefore comparable in research settings.  相似文献

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hip adduction on the activity of the Vastus Medialis Obliquus (VMO) and Vastus Lateralis Longus (VLL) muscles during semisquat exercises.

Methods: Twenty female subjects, divided into two groups comprising healthy and patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) subjects (ten volunteers for each group), performed three double-leg semisquat exercise trials with maximum hip adduction isometric contraction (DLSS-HA) and three double-leg semisquat exercise trials without hip adduction (DLSS). The normalized electromyographic muscle data were analysed using Repeated Measure ANOVA (p  0.05).

Results: The electrical activity of both VMO and VLL muscles was significantly greater during DLSS-HA exercise than during DLSS (p = 0.0002) for both groups. Additionally, an independent Repeated Measure ANOVA revealed that the electric activity of the VLL muscle was significantly greater (p = 0.0149) than that of the VMO muscle during DLSS exercises only for the PFPS group. However, no differences were found during DLSS-HA exercises.

Conclusions: Although there was no preferential VMO muscle activation, the association of hip adduction with squat exercise promoted a greater balance between the medial and lateral portions of the quadriceps femoris muscle and could be indicated for the conservatory treatment of PFPS patients. The association of isometric hip adduction with isometric semisquat exercises produced a more overall quadriceps activity and could be indicated for clinical rehabilitation or muscle strengthening programs.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to explore serum pancreatic lipase activity and the serum lipid profile in relation to peripheral blood dendritic cell subsets and disease severity in males with psoriasis.

Material and methods

The study population consisted of 22 normolipidemic males with psoriasis and 12 aged-matched and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy males. The percentages of peripheral blood dendritic cell (DC) subsets were evaluated using appropriate monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. The serum pancreatic lipase activity and the lipid profile were determined using standard enzymatic and colorimetric techniques.

Results

Pancreatic lipase activity was increased (p = 0.56421), high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol concentration (p = 0.00584) was significantly decreased, triglyceride (p = 0.00766) and VLDL-cholesterol (p = 0.00765) levels were significantly increased in serum of psoriatic patients compared to controls. The serum pancreatic lipase activity showed significant correlation with serum triglyceride (r = 0.42; p = 0.04721) and serum VLDL-cholesterol levels (r = 0.42; p = 0.04721) in psoriatic individuals. In psoriatic patients the percentage of myeloid DCs was increased (p = 0.54932), the percentage of lymphoid DCs was decreased (p = 0.14210) and myeloid DC/lymphoid DC ratio was significantly increased (p = 0.03569) compared to healthy individuals.

Conclusion

The direct cause of the abnormal lipid profile in psoriasis and its relationship with the immune system disturbances remains unclear. The reciprocal relationship between serum pancreatic activity and serum triglyceride level appears to confirm the hypothesis about abnormal lipid metabolism in psoriasis.  相似文献

We recently reported association between a coding-region single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP50) in the aromatase gene that encodes a key enzyme in testosterone metabolism, with risk for the development of precocious pubarche and circulating testosterone concentrations in two independent female populations. We have now explored further association with variation in the promoter-region of the aromatase gene. We genotyped six promoter-region haplotype-tag SNPs in young women from Oxford, UK (n = 109), and in girls with precocious pubarche (n = 186) and controls (n = 71) from Barcelona, Spain. Aromatase distal promoter-region variation was associated with plasma testosterone concentrations in both Oxford (r2 = 18.3%, p = 0.01) and Barcelona (r2 = 8.5%, p = 0.03) females. These associations were independent of SNP50, but appeared to be dependent on different SNPs in Oxford (r2 = 13.7%, p = 0.006 with SNPs 11 (p = 0.009), 28 (p = 0.02) and 39 (p = 0.06)) and Barcelona (r2 = 5.9%, p = 0.002 with SNP43 (p = 0.002)) populations. Aromatase distal promoter-region variation was also associated with PCOS symptom score in Oxford women (r2 = 14.5%, p = 0.048), but, unlike SNP50, was not associated with precocious pubarche risk in Barcelona girls. In conclusion, aromatase distal promoter-region variation appears to have functional consequences for plasma testosterone concentrations in females. The variable associations with androgen-related clinical features could possibly reflect the tissue-specific promoters of the aromatase gene.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the development of ageing- and glucocorticoid-related sarcopenia on the level of myofibrillar apparatus, paying attention to the synthesis (SR) and degradation rate (DR) of contractile proteins, muscle strength, and daily motor activity. We also wanted to test the effect of ageing and dexamethasone (Dex) excess on the regeneration peculiarities of skeletal muscle autografts. Four and 30-month-old male rats of the Wistar strain were used. Ageing associated sarcopenia was calculated from gastrocnemius muscle relative mass decrease (from 5.6 ± 0.08 to 3.35 ± 0.04; p < 0.001). The SR of MyHC in old rats was 30% and actin 23% lower than in young rats. Dex treatment decreased SR of two main contractile proteins significantly in both age groups (p < 0.001) and increased DR during ageing from 2.11 ± 0.15 to 4.09 ± 0.29%/day (p < 0.001). Hindlimb grip strength in young rats was 5.90 ± 0.35 N/100 g bw and 2.64 ± 0.2 N/100 g bw (p < 0.001) in old rats.

Autografts of old rats have a higher content of adipose tissue 14.9 ± 1.1% in comparison with young rats 6.8 ± 0.51% (p < 0.001) and less muscle tissue 39.8 ± 2.6% and 48.3 ± 2.8%, respectively (p < 0.05).

Both, ageing and dex-caused sarcopenic muscles have diminished capacity for regeneration.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Aim of this work is to compare mechanical and myoelectric manifestations of fatigue during an isometric contraction at 80% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in a population of eight anorexic female patients (AN: 24.9+/-6.5 years, mean+/-SD) with respect to a group of seven healthy female subjects (CO: 30.0+/-6.6 years, mean+/-SD). METHODS: sEMG signals were recorded, using a linear electrode array (eight channels, 10mm apart), from vastus lateralis muscle of the dominant side. MVC, endurance time, initial value and rate of change of the EMG variables [conduction velocity (CV), mean power frequency (MNF), average rectified value (ARV)] were studied during the fatiguing contractions. RESULTS: Absolute and relative (normalized with respect to the body weight) knee torque values and endurance times were found not statistically different between the two groups. Similarly, EMG amplitude initial values and rate of change and MNF initial values were found not significantly different between the two groups. CV initial values and CV rate of change were found greater in healthy than in pathological subjects (AN CV: 3.74+/-0.86m/s, CO CV: 4.96+/-0.64m/s, p=0.004; AN CV rate of change: 0.006+/-0.015m/s2, CO CV rate of change: -0.006+/-0.007m/s2, p=0.006, mean+/-SD). Contrary to expectations MNF rate of changes in the AN group (-0.35+/-0.16Hz/s) was found greater than in the CO group (-0.17+/-0.13Hz/s, p=0.004, Mann-Whitney U test, mean+/-SD). CONCLUSIONS: CV values and their rate of change were compatible with a predominance of type I fibres (and/or with an hypotrophy of type II fibres) and/or with a lower sub-cutaneous tissue thickness with respect to CO group, as described in the literature with this pathology. The behaviour of MNF during sustained contractions, opposite to that of CV, suggests an altered central control strategy aimed to increase mechanical force output increasing the level of synchronization of motor units. This study confirms the capability of sEMG to assess muscle condition during severe malnutrition suggesting further studies to assess if sEMG can be used to monitor the effect of re-feeding and rehabilitation treatments.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate EMG signal features during fatigue and recovery at three locations of the vastus medialis and lateralis muscles. Surface EMG signals were detected from 10 healthy male subjects with six 8-electrode arrays located at 10%, 20%, and 30% of the distance from the medial (for vastus medialis) and lateral (vastus lateralis) border of the patella to the anterior superior spine of the pelvic. Subjects performed contractions at 40% and 80% of the maximal force (MVC) until failure to maintain the target force, followed by 20 2-s contractions at the same force levels every minute for 20 min (recovery). Average rectified value, mean power spectral frequency, and muscle fiber conduction velocity were estimated from the EMG signals in 10 epochs from the beginning of the contraction to task failure (time to task failure, mean ± SD, 70.7 ± 25.8 s for 40% MVC; 27.4 ± 16.8 s for 80% MVC) and from the 20 2 s time intervals during recovery. During the fatiguing contraction, the trend over time of EMG average rectified value depended on location for both muscles (P < 0.05). After 20-min recovery, mean frequency and conduction velocity of both muscles were larger than in the beginning of the fatigue task (P < 0.05) (supernormal values). Moreover, the trend over time of mean frequency during recovery was affected by location and conduction velocity values depended on location for both muscles (P < 0.05). The results indicate spatial dependency of EMG variables during fatigue and recovery and thus the necessity of EMG spatial sampling for global muscle assessment.  相似文献

Inspiratory muscles training in COPD is controversial not only in relation to the load level required to produce muscular conditioning effects but also in relation to the group of patients benefiting from the training. Consequently, inspiratory muscular response assessment during Threshold® therapy may help optimizing training strategy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the participation of the diaphragm and the sternocleidomastoid (SMM) muscle to overcome with a 30% Threshold® load using surface electromyography (sEMG) and to analyze the correlation between SMM activation, maximum strength level of inspiratory muscles (MIP) and obstruction degree in COPD patients (FEV1). We studied seven healthy elderly subjects, mean age of 68 ± 4 years and seven COPD patients, FEV1 45 ± 17% of the predicted value, with mean age 66 ± 8 years. sEMG analysis of SMM muscles and diaphragm were obtained through RMS (root-mean-square) during three stages: pre-loading, loading and post-loading.

Results

In the COPD group, the RMS of the SMM increased 28% during load (p < 0.05) while the RMS of the diaphragm remained constant. In the elderly there was a trend of a 11% increase in diaphragm activity and of 7% in SMM activity but, without reaching significance levels. SMM activity demonstrated good correlation with the obstruction level (r = −0.537).

Conclusion

To overcome the load required by Threshold® therapy, COPD patients demonstrated an increase of accessory muscles activity, represented by SMM. For the same relative load this increase seems to be proportional to the degree of pulmonary obstruction.  相似文献

The conduction velocity (CV) of a muscle fiber is affected by the fiber's discharge history going back ~1 s. We investigated this dependence by measuring CV fluctuations during voluntary isometric contractions of the human brachioradialis muscle. We recorded electromyogram (EMG) signals simultaneously from multiple intramuscular electrodes, identified potentials belonging to the same motor unit using EMG decomposition, and estimated the CV of each discharge from the interpotential interval. In 12 of 14 subjects, CV increased by ~10% during the first second after recruitment and then fluctuated by about ±2% in a way that mirrored the fluctuations in the instantaneous firing rate. The CV profile could be precisely described in terms of the discharge history by a simple mathematical model. In the other two subjects, and one subject retested after cooling the arm, the CV fluctuations were inversely correlated with instantaneous firing rate. In all subjects, CV was additionally affected by very short interdischarge intervals (<25 ms): it was increased in doublets at recruitment, but decreased in doublets during continuous firing and after short interdischarge intervals in doubly innervated fibers. CV also exhibited a slow trend of about -0.05%/s that did not depend on the immediate discharge history. We suggest that measurements of CV fluctuations during voluntary contractions, or during stimulation protocols that involve longer and more complex stimulation patterns than are currently being used, may provide a sensitive approach for estimating the dynamic characteristics of ion channels in the human muscle-fiber membrane.  相似文献

Two Polylepis australis BITT. populations differing in size were examined with the aim of determining future sampling strategies; assessing levels of genetic diversity and checking whether trees of different ages might vary in their genetic structure due to the effects of fragmentation. RADP and ISSR gave similar values of diversity. A re-sampling technique showed that for P. australis, 10 trees and 20 markers were enough to produce an unbiased estimator of heterozygosity. AMOVA suggested differences in allele frequencies between young and old trees in the small population (p = 0.052), but not in a large population (p = 0.864); suggesting that gene flow between the areas diminished in relatively recent times. This assumption is supported by the fact that allele frequencies among both woodlands were significantly different between the young (p < 0.0001), but not the older trees (p = 0.87).  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to examine whether or not the application of independent component analysis (ICA) is useful for separation of motor unit action potential trains (MUAPTs) from the multi-channel surface EMG (sEMG) signals. In this study, the eight-channel sEMG signals were recorded from tibialis anterior muscles during isometric dorsi-flexions at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% maximal voluntary contraction. Recording MUAP waveforms with little time delay mounted between the channels were obtained by vertical sEMG channel arrangements to muscle fibers. The independent components estimated by FastICA were compared with the sEMG signals and the principal components calculated by principal component analysis (PCA). From our results, it was shown that FastICA could separate groups of similar MUAP waveforms of the sEMG signals separated into each independent component while PCA could not sufficiently separate the groups into the principal components. A greater reduction of interferences between different MUAP waveforms was demonstrated by the use of FastICA. Therefore, it is suggested that FastICA could provide much better discrimination of the properties of MUAPTs for sEMG signal decomposition, i.e. waveforms, discharge intervals, etc., than not only PCA but also the original sEMG signals.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to objectively assess the response of car passengers to lateral accelerations. Surface EMG signals were collected bilaterally from the cervical erector spinae (CES), latissimus dorsi (LD), erector spinae (ES), external oblique (EO), and vastus lateralis (VL) muscles of 10 subjects. Lateral acceleration was also recorded. Three chassis-seat configurations AA, BA and BB were tested, with the first letter denoting the chassis and the second the seat. SEMG signals were often contaminated by noise, and were, therefore, denoised using the methods explained in part I. Reciprocal phasic activity was observed for all muscles except for the EO, and the reaction of passengers to lateral accelerations was interpreted as a bust torsion. The RMS of EMG segments was used as an indication of muscle activity. Muscle activation of VL and ES were significantly affected by the configuration tested (p < 0.05), with greater activation levels observed for the chassis A than for the chassis B. Such a finding implies that greater roll requires greater muscle activity, thus resulting in less comfortable vehicles. Therefore, SEMG can be used to provide an objective measure of discomfort in passengers subjected to lateral accelerations in a car seat.  相似文献

A novel surface electromyographic (EMG) technique was recently described for the detection of deep cervical flexor muscle activity. Further investigation of this technique is warranted to ensure EMG activity from neighbouring muscles is not markedly influencing the signals recorded. This study compared deep cervical flexor (DCF) muscle activity with the activity of surrounding neck and jaw muscles during various anatomical movements of the neck and jaw in 10 volunteer subjects. DCF EMG activity was recorded with custom electrodes inserted via the nose and fixed by suction to the posterior mucosa of the oropharynx. Surface electrodes were placed over the sternocleidomastoid, anterior scalene, masseter and suprahyoid muscles. Positioned in supine, subjects performed isometric cranio-cervical flexion, cervical flexion, right and left cervical rotation, jaw clench and resisted jaw opening. Across all movements examined, EMG amplitude of the DCF muscles was greatest during neck movements that would require activity of the DCF muscles, particularly during cranio-cervical flexion, their primary anatomical action. The actions of jaw clench and resisted jaw opening demonstrated significantly less DCF EMG activity than the cranio-cervical flexion action (p < 0.05). Across all other movements, the neighbouring neck and jaw muscles demonstrated greatest EMG amplitude during their respective primary anatomical actions, which occurred in the absence of increased EMG amplitude recorded from the DCF muscles. The finding of substantial EMG activity of the DCF muscles only during neck actions that would require their activity, particularly cranio-cervical flexion, and not during actions involving the jaw, provide further assurance that the majority of myoelectric signals detected from the nasopharyngeal electrode are from the DCF muscles.  相似文献

This experiment aimed to identify how a pig's age affected the extent and synchrony of use of different environmental enrichment materials, and how this use changed over time. Ten diverse novel objects were each presented to three replicate litters of 3 weeks of age (sucklers) and three replicate groups of three animals of 5 (weaners) weeks and 13 (growers) weeks of age. Video recordings were made of the pigs’ behaviour over a period of 5 days and subsequently analysed for activity, inactivity and object directed behaviour of three animals per group on days 1 and 5. The observed performance of any given behaviour, when at least one other member of the group was also performing that behaviour, was compared with the probability that such concurrence occurred by chance and these results were used to calculate the degree of synchronisation. Gender had no effect on the duration of object use or approach latency. Growers displayed a shorter latency to approach the objects initially compared to sucklers and weaners (mean seconds; 2153 versus 2660 versus 980 for sucklers, weaners and growers, respectively, S.E.D. 542, p = 0.007). Sucklers used the objects to a much lesser extent than either the weaners or growers (mean duration object interaction (s); 129 versus 1253 versus 1412 for sucklers, weaners and growers, respectively, S.E.D. 93, p < 0.001). Overall object use decreased between days 1 and 5 (mean duration object interaction (s); 1326 versus 536 for days 1 and 5, respectively, S.E.D. 76, p < 0.001). All of the age groups synchronised their behaviour to a much greater extent than expected by chance. The sucklers showed a higher degree of synchrony of activity (K; 0.890 versus 0.776 versus 0.682 for sucklers, weaners and growers respectively, S.E.D. 0.013, p < 0.001) and inactivity (K; 0.963 versus 0.905 versus 0.909 respectively, S.E.D. 0.007, p < 0.001), but lower degree of synchrony for object directed behaviour (K; 0.149 versus 0.375 versus 0.370 respectively, S.E.D. 0.025, p < 0.001), than the weaners and growers. The degree of synchronisation of object directed behaviour decreased over the 5-day period, irrespective of age (K; 0.382 versus 0.214 for days 1 and 5 respectively, S.E.D. 0.020, p < 0.001). Significant correlations (r = 0.678–0.879) were found between the degree of synchrony and extent of object interaction only for the sucklers. Since pigs showed behavioural synchronisation, object availability should be considered when providing desirable enrichment in order to avoid excessive competition in larger commercial groups.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effects of the longitudinal single differential (LSD), the longitudinal double differential (LDD) and the normal double differential (NDD) spatial filters, the electrode shape, the inter-electrode distance (IED) on non-Gaussianity and non-linearity levels of simulated surface EMG (sEMG) signals when the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) varied from 10% to 100% by a step of 10%. The effects of recruitment range thresholds (RR), the firing rate (FR) strategy and the peak firing rate (PFR) of motor units were also considered.A cylindrical multilayer model of the volume conductor and a model of motor unit (MU) recruitment and firing rate were used to simulate sEMG signals in a pool of 120 MUs for 5 s. Firstly, the stationarity of sEMG signals was tested by the runs, the reverse arrangements (RA) and the modified reverse arrangements (MRA) tests. Then the non-Gaussianity was characterised with bicoherence and kurtosis, and non-linearity levels was evaluated with linearity test. The kurtosis analysis showed that the sEMG signals detected by the LSD filter were the most Gaussian and those detected by the NDD filter were the least Gaussian. In addition, the sEMG signals detected by the LSD filter were the most linear. For a given filter, the sEMG signals detected by using rectangular electrodes were more Gaussian and more linear than that detected with circular electrodes. Moreover, the sEMG signals are less non-Gaussian and more linear with reverse onion-skin firing rate strategy than those with onion-skin strategy. The levels of sEMG signal Gaussianity and linearity increased with the increase of the IED, RR and PFR.  相似文献

Our purpose was to assess the effect of foot intrinsic muscle fatigue on pronation, as assessed with navicular drop, during static stance. Twenty-one healthy young adults participated. Navicular drop was measured before and after fatiguing exercise of the plantar foot intrinsic muscles. Surface electromyography of the abductor hallucis muscle was recorded during maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) in order to find the baseline median frequency (MedF). Subjects then performed sets of 75 repetitions of isotonic flexion contractions of the intrinsic foot muscles against a 4.55 kg weight on a custom pulley system. After each set an MVIC was performed to track shifts in MedF. After a MedF shift of at least 10%, navicular drop measurements were repeated. Subjects exhibited 10.0 ± 3.8 mm of navicular drop at baseline and 11.8 ± 3.8 mm after fatigue (p < 0.0005). The change in navicular drop was significantly correlated with change in MedF (r = .47, p = .03). The intrinsic foot muscles play a role in support of the medial longitudinal arch in static stance. Disrupting the function of these muscles through fatigue resulted in an increase in pronation as assessed by navicular drop.  相似文献
