The raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides, a medium-sized canid, is a representative of the East Asian fauna and has been introduced to Europe during the years 1928–1953. Today, this alien carnivore is a widespread species in Eastern Europe, Finland and Germany. In our study, we determined home range sizes of raccoon dogs in an agricultural landscape in Northeast Germany between 2001 and 2004 by very high frequency radio tracking. Those data are useful for estimation of predator densities in respect to conservation of biodiversity and also to develop models for disease and parasite transmission. Yearly average home range sizes were calculated as 95% fixed kernel: 1.83 km2 ± 1.54 and as 50% fixed kernel (=core areas): 0.50 km2 ± 0.49. We documented seasonal differences in home range sizes as well as overlapping of home ranges from 0.65% up to 67%. Some individuals’ home ranges recorded during the same season showed a clear shifting between different years. Abandoned badger dens, located in the core areas of raccoon dogs home ranges, were important during the whole year and particularly used in the winter period. Therefore, distribution of those dens had some influence on the spatial distribution of raccoon dogs in the study area. Based on mean annual home range size, we estimated the mean local population density during winter as 1.1 individuals per square kilometre and during summer as 4.90 individuals per square kilometre.  相似文献

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) has a wide distribution in Europe and is a prominent example of a highly adaptable alien species. It has been recorded sporadically in Denmark since 1980 but observations since 2008 suggested that the species had established a free-ranging, self-sustaining population. To elucidate the origin and genetic patterns of Danish raccoon dogs, we studied the population genomics of 190 individuals collected in Denmark (n = 141) together with reference captive individuals from Poland (n = 21) and feral individuals from different European localities (Germany, Poland, Estonia and Finland, n = 28). We used a novel genotyping-by-sequencing approach simultaneously identifying and genotyping a large panel of single nucleotide polymorphisms (n = 4526). Overall, there was significant indication for contemporary genetic structuring of the analysed raccoon dog populations, into at least four different clusters, in spite of the existence of long distance gene flow and secondary admixture from different population sources. The Danish population was characterized by a high level of genetic admixture with neighbouring feral European ancestries and the presence of private clusters, non-retrieved in any other feral or captive populations sampled. These results suggested that the raccoon dog population in Denmark was founded by escapees from genetically unidentified Danish captive stocks, followed by a recent admixture with individuals migrating from neighbouring Germany.  相似文献

Migration and reproduction of the Caspian Lamprey, Caspiomyzon wagneri, in the Shirud River were investigated during late-March to early-May at water temperatures ranging from 11 to 21.25°C. We examined the effect of water temperature on timing of spawning migrations. There was a significant negative relationship between temperature and intensive migration of Caspian Lamprey (p < 0.05). The most intensive migration of lampreys was at night (21:00–3:00 h) and when the water temperatures averaged 16°C (34.43%). The overall sex ratio (male to female) was 1.07 to 1. The individual absolute fecundity was 31 ‘758–51’ 198 eggs (mean±SD—41,924 ± 5,382). The egg diameter was 0.780–1.151 (0.92 ± 0.081) mm. The individual relative fecundity varies from 80.3 to 148.1 (107.2 ± 15.1) eggs per 1 mm of length and from 260.8 to 677.4 (397.6 ± 93) eggs per 1 g of weight. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of females was 5.83–31.44 (11.22 ± 4.30).  相似文献

Counting of placental scars in the uterus is a valuable method to estimate female fecundity in wild-ranging mammalian populations, but the reliability of placental scar counts (PSC) has only been thoroughly assessed for a few species. Here we evaluate the reliability of PSC in American mink (Mustela vison) through examination of farm animals with known reproductive history. PSC estimated pregnancy rate and litter size accurately in individuals up to 3 months postpartum. Placental scars were detectable in most female American mink sampled 7–8 months postpartum, but the proportion of minks misclassified as barren was overestimated, and mean litter size was underestimated. We found a large variation in the intensity of pigmentation in placental scars with similar age. Differentiation of scars according to shading as indicating either successful full-term pregnancies or post-implantation loss of embryos was not possible. We propose that these results are applicable for fecundity analysis in American mink and closely related mustelids.  相似文献

The reproductive biology and spawning strategy of the iconic catadromous percichthyid, estuary perch Macquaria colonorum was examined from three coastal rivers of south-eastern (SE) Australia. Ovarian and testicular development followed a pattern similar to that of other percichthyids, world-wide. Females were collected in significantly larger sizes and greater numbers from all, and two of the three rivers, respectively. Mean size and age at maturity was greater for females (25.05 cm FL ± 0.85 and 3.75 yrs ± 0.08, respectively) than males (22.21 cm FL ± 0.50 and 3.28 yrs ± 0.08 respectively), with no significant difference between rivers. Trends in gonadosomatic indices indicated that M. colonorum spawn in the austral winter-spring in SE Australia. However, peak spawning occurred earlier (June-August) in the two most northern rivers (Hawkesbury and Clyde) compared with the Bemm River (September-November) further south. Ripe females were captured only in the lower reaches of estuaries throughout the spawning period in all three rivers. Mature M. colonorum females displayed a group synchronous pattern of oocyte development suggesting a multiple spawning strategy. Mean batch fecundity (F B ) was 266 583 ± 17 821 oocytes per female and relative fecundity was 377 ± 10 oocytes.g-1 body weight. There were significant power relationships between F B and fork length (FL), weight and age. Similar to other percichthyids, M. colonorum are long-lived, highly fecund and exhibit a flexible spawning strategy which is attuned to the highly variable environments in which they are found.  相似文献

This study compares the energetic cost of reproduction during gestation and lactation of a eutherian, the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), and a similar-sized (60–120 g) marsupial, the gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica). Food consumption was monitored in 20 reproductively active (RA) opossums and 16 RA hamsters from conception to weaning and at equivalent intervals in 19 non-reproductive (NR) opossums and 21 NR hamsters, all maintained within their zone of thermoneutrality (30 °C). Total energy assimilated from conception to weaning [opossums: 1261.3 ± 28.0 Kcal (1 Kcal = 4.1868 J) and hamsters: 1647.5 ± 60.6 Kcal] was positively correlated with litter size and mass per young in both species. Maternal mass-specific assimilated energy was significantly greater in hamsters than in opossums during gestation (P < 0.001), but not during lactation or from conception to weaning (P > 0.05). Efficiency of offspring production (energy stored in young/incremental energy in RA females) was higher in hamsters than in opossums and, in both species, it was higher during lactation than in gestation. The energetic cost of reproduction (per young per day) was higher in hamsters than in opossums. The marsupial mode of reproduction, as seen in opossums, yields young at lower cost but requires a longer reproductive period than is the case for a similar-sized eutherian. Reproductive success is a critical component of individual fitness, and also an important determinant of growth rates of populations characterized by early maturity and high fecundity. We used radiotelemetry data collected during 2003–2008 to estimate reproductive parameters in a declining northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) population in South Florida, and to test hypotheses regarding factors influencing these parameters. The overall clutch size was 12.10 ± 0.22, but females laid more eggs in their first clutch (12.43 ± 0.24) than in subsequent clutches (10.19 ± 0.53) within a nesting season. Daily nest survival was higher for first (0.966 ± 0.003) than subsequent nests (0.936 ± 0.011). Hatchability (proportion of laid eggs that hatched conditional upon nest survival to hatching) was 0.853 ± 0.008, but was higher for nests incubated by females (0.873 ± 0.009) than those incubated by males (0.798 ± 0.018). The proportion of individuals attempting a second nest was 0.112 ± 0.024 and 0.281 ± 0.040 when the first nest was successful and failed, respectively. Hatchability was lower when the nesting habitat was burned the previous winter. We found no evidence that food strip density (a management practice to provide supplemental food) influenced any of the reproductive parameters. Mean summer temperature affected hatchability, nest survival, and proportion of nests incubated by males. Overall, the reproductive output in our study population was lower than that reported for most other bobwhite populations, indicating that low reproductive performance may have contributed to bobwhite population declines in our study site. These results suggest that current management practices, particularly those related to habitat and harvest management, need careful evaluation.  相似文献

Based on the gross anatomic examination of 218 adult female reproductive tracts, we characterised the reproductive biology of the wild collared peccary in the Northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Collared peccary apparently breed year round in the Northeastern Peruvian Amazon and the number of pregnant females was 92 (42.2%). Estimations suggest 1.12 births/year and a yearly reproductive production of 1.98 piglets per pregnant female. Collared peccary females presented a mean ovulation rate of 2.25 ± 0.58 CLs, a litter size of 1.77 ± 0.48 embryos or foetuses and a reproductive wastage of 0.45 ± 0.65 (21.3%) oocytes or embryos per pregnant female. A phenomenon of embryo migration was observed in 31.8% of pregnant females. This study provides reproductive information that should be taken into account in management plans.  相似文献

This study presents fundamental information on the reproductive biology, size and age composition, and growth of yellow catfish, Peltobagrus fulvidraco. Sampling was carried out monthly from Ce Lake in Hubei province from January 2004 and December 2004. Overall female/male (F/M) sex ratio was 1.08, not significantly different from expected 1.0 ratio. But sex ratio (F/M) of the spawning group was 1.14:1 with skewness towards females (p < 0.05). The smallest sexually mature male and female massed 20.51 and 16.93 g, and measured 100.1 and 94.3 mm in total length, respectively. Reproductive period for this species is from April to August when GSI is considerably higher than the rest months (p < 0.05). The highest GSI values were measured from May to July for both sexes and this period was presumably the peak spawn. First maturation occurred at age 1+ for both sexes. Fish of age 1+ and 2+ comprised the greatest portion of spawners. The absolute fecundity (AF) of P. fulvidraco ranged from 657 to 11,696 eggs per fish, with mean AF value of 3,570 ± 122 (S.D.) eggs per fish, varying considerably at given length, weight and age. The fecundity relative to total length (F/L) fluctuated from 58 to 680 eggs/mm, with a mean value of 246 ± 34 (SD) eggs/mm, and fecundity relative to total weight (F/W) varied from 29–133 eggs/g, with a mean value of 67 ± 7 (SD) eggs/g. P. fulvidraco is a single spawner, with low fecundity compared with other Bagrid fish.  相似文献

Overwintering population of Cercopagis is represented by resting eggs which hatch generally in May. Although representatives of the first parthenogenetic generation (the spring form individuals) differ morphologically from individuals of the subsequent generations (the summer form individuals) and could be keyed to a separate species – Cercopagis (Apagis) ossiani – our analysis confirm that there is only one Cercopagis species in the Gulf of Riga: Cercopagis pengoi. Notable seasonal dynamics was observed for the gamogenetic mode of reproduction, being strongly associated with the total population density. Gamogenetic females develop since the end of June and reach the maximum absolute abundance in July whereas their proportion is generally the highest in fall. The gamogenetic absolute fecundity drops to the lowest level late July but increased afterwards until the late August. One resting egg was, an average, found in 45.4%, two in 53.4% and three in 1.2% of females. Parthenogenetic fecundity was significantly higher in May–June compared to other months studied. Brood pouch of parthenogenetic females was found to contain 11.6 ± 1.0 and 10.2 ± 0.3 embryos in the spring and summer form individuals, respectively. Variation in the two modes of reproduction and fecundity is probably solely not controlled by temperature, but also by food availability and population density.  相似文献

The reproduction of the plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) was investigated in Guoluo District at an elevation of 4,000 m on the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau, China, from April 2007 to August 2008. Reproduction was seasonal, and the breeding season lasted from April to late June/early July. Adults produced two litters in each year, and the mean litter size, estimated by counting the number of embryos in utero, was 3.3 ± 0.1 (n = 52) in 2007 and 3.2 ± 0.1 (n = 66) in 2008. The timing of reproduction showed high inter-annual variation; lower precipitation and the concomitant delay in spring vegetation phenology may have retarded the onset of the breeding season in 2007 compared with 2008. The most frequent litter sizes were 3 and 4, which together comprised 71.2% and 83.3% of litters in May and June of 2007 and 2008, respectively. Compared with previous studies, reproduction was highly variable between geographic areas. Pikas produced between one and five litters per year in different regions of the plateau over different breeding seasons. This geographic and inter-annual variation appeared to be associated with the duration of plant growth at each site, suggesting that plateau pikas adjust the length of their breeding season to match the period when sufficient energy is available to support the high energy demands of reproduction.  相似文献

Some key aspects of the reproductive strategy of the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario L.) in the Yadong River, Tibet, including spawning season, age at sexual maturity, fecundity and egg size, have been studied. The majority of the samples were less than 215 mm and age ranged from 1 to 4 in both sexes, indicating that the majority of the fish were younger and the pressure by overfishing was high. The spawning periodicity was determined to be between the end of October and January, mainly in November and December. The ratio of male to female brown trout population (1.29:1 with P > 0.05) suggested no sex significant differences, although males were significantly more abundant than females in October (P < 0.0001) on monthly basis. Age and size of males and females at maturity was different and males matured earlier than females. Fecundity was markedly correlated with their body weight (P < 0.001, r = 0.9255), standard length (P < 0.01, r = 0.8879), and gonad weight (P < 0.001, r = 0.9366). The mean size of mature eggs in the spawning season was: 4.0 ± 0.45 mm and tended to increase along with the female spawners size (P < 0.001, r = 0.9641). Further researches about the brown trout population in the Yadong River should be conducted on issues such as artificial reproduction, culture, conservation, management, and restocking.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe growth, determine age at sexual maturity and investigate the condition of bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus) collected in the fjords of Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway. Morphometric data, teeth and sex organs were collected from 110 animals. Age was determined by reading the cementum layers in hard longitudinal sections of canine teeth. Sexual maturity in males was determined according to the size of the testes and bacula. Females were defined as being sexually mature according to findings of mature follicles or corpora lutea/albicantia. Von Bertalanffy growth curves were applied to both standard length and body mass, and asymptotic values for males and females were 231.1 ± 11.4 cm and 269.9 ± 26.2 kg, and 233.1 ± 7.5 cm and 275.3 ± 47.8 kg, respectively. Maximum recorded lengths and masses were 254 cm and 313 kg in males and 242 cm and 358 kg in females. All males older than 6 years were found to have been sexually mature. Females were found to attain sexual maturity at about 90% of the asymptotic length, corresponding to an age of 5 years. In males a significant decrease in condition was observed from June to August, with a subsequent increase in September. In adult females, condition decreased from May to June and increased again from June to September. The conditional changes seen are likely to be due to the extra energetic cost and reduced food intake associated with reproduction, lactation and molt. Accepted: 28 July 1998  相似文献

Despite its relative abundance and wide geographical range, the population dynamics and reproductive biology of the European polecatMustela putorius Linnaeus, 1758 are largely unknown as to the wild living. We therefore investigated age and reproductive status of 239 Danish polecats primarily killed in traffic or trapped during 1998–2004. Males comprised two third of all individuals in all age groups. Based on a static life table, apparent annual mortality was 68% during the first year of life, 33% during the second year and 65% from the third year in both sexes. The mean (± SE) litter size of 5.95 ± 0.62 (n = 18), estimated from placental scar counts, was significantly lower than litter sizes at birth reported for captive individuals but consistent with litter sizes reported for wild polecats in Russia. Female yearlings conceived at the same rate and produced litters of the same size as older individuals.Males had spermatozoa in their testes from February through August. Testes mass peaked in April and May, ie the same period when most females conceive. A lower prevalence of individuals with spermatozoa in yearlings suggests that most males postponed sexual maturity to two years of age.  相似文献

Living exclusively in trout streams which are very poor in nutrients, freshwater pearl mussels are physiologically adapted to the low food supply by a reduced metabolism. Longevity of these mussels spans decades and life-time fecundity of females is very high (up to 2*108 larvae). Their resource allocation policy favours survival over current reproduction. Reproductive effort (per reproductive period) falls within the lowest range of values reported for molluscs (0.8–5.3% of the total organic substance). The soft parts (without larvae) of reproducing females are heavier compared to pausing ones, indicating that only those females reproduce which exceed a threshold value of body weight. The more they exceed this value the more larvae they produce. Surplus energy (the amount above the threshold) is not completely devoted to reproduction but is in part invested in somatic functions. At the population level this allocation system results in largely size independent fecundity values, varying considerably between individuals and in a variable percentage (5–54%) of females taking part in reproduction every year. The evolution of this system must be attributed to the reduced metabolism and growth. This provides the basis for a very long life accompanied with many spawning periods. Accordingly fitness can be improved by extending longevity. Received: 27 April 1998 / Accepted: 13 July 1998  相似文献

Various aspects of the reproductive biology of two archer fishes Toxotes chatareus and Toxotes jaculatrix were studied to describe gonad development, spawning season, sex ratio, and fecundity. Spawning season was assessed using monthly changes in gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological inspection of the gonads. Both species exhibit two modes of oocytes; a mode of small primary growth oocytes and a single mode that increases with size as oocytes sequester vitellogenin and undergo maturation, showing the synchronous oocyte development typical of total spawners. Based on GSI values and advanced stages of oocyte maturity, T. chatareus and T. jaculatrix, females appear to spawn from November to December. The average fecundity of female T. chatareus was 55 000 ± 5538 eggs, and T. jaculatrix was 50 000 ± 3440 eggs; fecundity ranged from 20 000 to 150 000 eggs for both species, with relative fecundities of 600 to 1100 eggs/g body weight, and a mean value of 800 ± 32 for T. chatareus; relative fecundity ranged from 500 to 1100 with a mean value of 700 ± 23 for T. jaculatrix. Sex ratio, defined as the proportion of males to females, was 2.2 and 2.5 in T. chatareus and T. jaculatrix, respectively. The apparent abundance of males in samples could be due to females being positioned lower in the water column and therefore being sampled less frequently. Our results indicate that in both species, spawning occurs between the months of November and December during the monsoon season, which provides the mangrove coastal waters inhabited by these species with an abundance of food resources and additional floodplain nursery habitat for larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

Three pairs of raccoon dogsNyctereutes procyonoides (Gray, 1834) were observed by continuous radio-tracking (one 24-h session, once a week) during the first six weeks after parturition. Males spent noticeably more time (40.5% ±11.7 SD) alone with the pups than females (16.4% ±8.5 SD). Females had noticeably larger home ranges (95% kernel: 98.24 ha ±51.71 SD) than males (14.73 ha ±8.16 SD) and moved much longer daily distances (7368 m ±2015 SD) than males (4094 m ±2886 SD) in six weeks postpartum. The raccoon dogs left the breeding den in the 6th week after the birth of the pups.In situ video observation showed that the male carried prey to the den to provide the female and the litter with food. A clear division of labour took place among parents during the period in which the pups were nursed: males guarded the litter in the den or in close vicinity of it, while the females foraged to satisfy their increased energy requirements.  相似文献

The erythrocyte surface sialic acid concentration of clinically healthy mongrel and exotic (Alsatian i.e. German shepherd and Terrier) breeds of dogs was analyzed in order to determine their role in the genetic resistance of these breeds of dogs to diseases that cause anaemia. The mean erythrocyte surface sialic acid (ESA) concentration was 57.08 ± 1.67, 34.50 ± 2.30 and 20.20 ± 3.54 mg/dl for Mongrel, Alsatian (German shepherd) and Terrier breeds of dogs, respectively, on acid hydrolysis. The mean values of ESA obtained following enzymic hydrolysis of haemoglobin-free erythrocyte membranes using Clostridium chauvoei (Jakari strain) sialidase were 49.08 ± 0.41, 30.97 ± 1.82 and 18.64 ± 0.75 mg/dl for Mongrel, Alsatian (German shepherd) and Terrier dogs respectively. When Trypanosoma vivax sialidase was used the ESA values obtained were 50.81 ± 0.37, 41.70 ±  0.94 and 19.65 + 0.65 mg/dl for Mongrel, Alsatian (German shepherd) and Terrier breeds of dogs respectively. This represents a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001) between the mean ESA concentration of all the breeds of dogs investigated in this study. The higher mean ESA concentration in Mongrel dogs, compared to the exotic breeds may be responsible for their resistance to disease conditions, whose aetiologic agents produce neuraminidase and also cause anaemia.  相似文献

Reproductive effort, factors affecting reproductive output and costs of reproduction were studied in primiparous yearling compared to multiparous older female European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus). Yearling females weaned smaller litters than older ones. Litter size increased with posthibernation body mass at the expense of slightly lighter young for yearling but not for older mothers. In older females, on the other hand, emergence body mass influenced offspring mass, whereas litter size was affected by oestrus date. High reproductive effort entailed reproductive costs in terms of reduced subsequent fecundity but not subsequent survival for both yearling and older females. The production of large litters and long duration of lactation delayed subsequent oestrus, which, in turn, correlated negatively with litter size. During the second half of lactation, oestradiol levels were significantly elevated, indicating the initiation of follicular maturation processes. Oestradiol levels during that time correlated negatively with current, but positively with subsequent litter size. We therefore assume that inhibitory effects of lactation on gonadal development may mediate the negative relationship between reproductive effort and subsequent reproductive timing in adults. This effect is absent in yearlings because they are reproducing for the first time. Reproductive output in yearlings was influenced by interactions between structural growth and puberty. Of trace elements in the serum of living organisms, selenium (Se) is an essential mineral and plays the role of an antioxidant as selenoproteins protecting the organism against oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide, other lipid hydroperoxides, and their derivatives. The aim of this study was to determine the mean serum Se levels in healthy Korean volunteers (50 males and 50 females) by using an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry method. The samples were collected at the Health Promotion Centre of Kangnam St. Mary’s Hospital, College of Medicine, the Catholic University of Korea, Kangnam District, Seoul in accordance with procedures approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Catholic University of Korea. The mean serum Se level in healthy subjects was 112.05 ± 30.42 μg/l. For gender, it was 120.81 ± 27.37 μg/l for females and 103.29 ± 31.05 μg/l for males. From the study result, there was a significant difference between the mean Se concentrations of gender groups (p = 0.0035). Also, the study indicated no effect of age on Se levels (p > 0.05) in the healthy individuals.  相似文献
