Schooling behaviour and histological retinal light adaptation in juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis were examined under various light intensities to determine the effect of light intensity on behaviour. After monitoring the schooling behaviour of juveniles 35–36 and 45–46 days post hatching, schooling variables such as nearest neighbour distance and separation swimming index were measured under different light intensities. Furthermore, retinal indices of light adaptation were investigated histologically for each experimental light intensity. Under intensities >5 lx, schooling variables in the two juvenile growth stages were nearly constant, allowing schooling. In contrast, the schooling variables indicated that the fish gradually swam more widely and randomly with decreasing light intensities <5 lx. The retinal indices also showed a shift from light adaptation to dark adaptation at light levels <5 lx. From 5 to 0·01 lx, retinal adaptation and fish schooling behaviour changed with light intensity. These data suggest that the schooling behaviour of juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna is greatly affected by retinal adaptation.  相似文献

Visual acuity of the commercially important sparid Pagrus auratus was tested using the optomotor response. Juvenile fish were categorized by size as group 1 (50 g), group 2 (100 g), group 3 (150 g), group 4 (300 g), group 5 (500 g) and group 6 (800 g). Group 3 fish demonstrated excellent visual acuity (minimum separable angle, M(SA), 1°), which was improved compared with the smaller fish groups (groups 1 and 2, M(SA), 2°). In the larger fish groups, however, a reduction in visual acuity was observed (groups 4, 5 and 6 M(SA), 4°). Group 2 (100 g) fish displayed positive optomotor responses in long wavelength light (red) but reduced responses in short wavelengths (blue). Red light sensitivity is beneficial for the estuarine lifestyle of these fish, where light is predominantly at long wavelengths. In contrast, group 6 (800 g) fish displayed improved acuity in blue and green light and reduced acuity in red light. Fish of this size move away from the estuary to open oceans, where light is predominantly in the shorter wavelengths (blue-green). These results support the sensitivity hypothesis for the relationship between fish visual systems and the light environment they inhabit.  相似文献

Fluctuations in the abundance of fishes may be caused by episodic mortalities or by more subtle variability in the daily growth and mortality rates of eggs and larvae. Survival response surfaces are used to illustrate the relative effects of episodic and subtle mortality during early life. It is the subtle variability associated with small changes in growth or mortality rates that may exert the greater effect on recruitment. Massive advective losses of eggs or larvae, failed egg production, and acute contaminant mortalities are examples of episodic events that may impact recruitment significantly but which need not be catastrophic. Stabilization of recruitments through density-dependent growth rate variability in early life is demonstrated to be potentially important. Whether this mechanism actually is important in the sea remains to be determined.  相似文献

Early life stage (ELS) studies with brown trout(Salmo trutta f. fario L.) andstone loach (Barbatula barbatula L.)were performed between 1995 and 2000 toevaluate embryotoxic potentials in twodifferently polluted streams in southwestGermany. With both species, semistatic exposureexperiments with water samples and sedimenteluates were conducted in the laboratory.Additionally, brown trout ELS tests wereperformed in flow-through systems in thesemi-field and in the field. Thus, differentlevels of complexity of environmentalconditions were addressed which allowed thestudy of effects of xenobiotic contamination,temperature, and sediments on the success ofembryonic development. Additionally, effects ofwater from the polluted stream on fertilizationof brown trout eggs were determined. In themore polluted stream, xenobiotics caused anembryotoxic potential for both brown trout andstone loach, and viability of exposed browntrout eggs was drastically reduced by suspendedsolids in the water which covered the eggs.Additionally, fertilization rates of browntrout eggs were significantly decreased inwater of the more polluted stream. In the lesspolluted stream, low water temperature andinfestations by protozoic ectoparasites causedmortality of embryos. In this stream, pollutionand sediment effects were not observed. Resultsmade evident that in the more polluted streamrecruitment of brown trout was drasticallyimpaired.  相似文献

A new method to estimate the survival of salmonids from egg fertilization to fry emergence is described. Fine mesh screen cylindrical capsules, 12 cm3 in volume, filled with batches of 10 eggs of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were implanted in the substratum using small removable guiding tubes inserted with a metal spike. The method was compared with two other commonly used techniques, capping redds with fry‐traps and fine mesh screen incubation‐emergence boxes buried into the gravel. Egg‐to‐fry survival was recorded for the three methods run in parallel in artificial redds created on three sites of the Nivelle River watershed (south‐west of France), two in the stream and one in an experimental spawning channel. In the channel, survival to the eyed stage and to hatching in capsules and incubation‐emergence boxes was also compared. The implant of capsules proved easier and faster to use than other methods, the structure of the surrounding substratum was less disturbed and the capsules were less vulnerable to spates. This technique provided survival values largely free of the bias induced by other methods and intermediate between that of incubators and of traps.  相似文献

In an inbred population, selection may reduce the frequency of deleterious recessive alleles through a process known as purging. Empirical studies suggest, however, that the efficacy of purging in natural populations is highly variable. This variation may be due, in part, to variation in the expression of inbreeding depression available for selection to act on. This experiment investigates the roles of life stage and early‐life environment in determining the expression of inbreeding depression in Agrostemma githago. Four population‐level crosses (‘self’, ‘within’, ‘near’ and ‘far’) were conducted on 20 maternal plants from a focal population. Siblings were planted into one of three early environmental treatments with varying stress levels. Within the focal population, evidence for purging of deleterious recessive alleles, as well as for variation in the expression of inbreeding depression across the life cycle was examined. In addition, the effect of early environment on the expression of inbreeding depression and the interaction with cross‐type was measured. We find that deleterious recessive alleles have not been effectively purged from our focal population, the expression of inbreeding depression decreases over the course of the life cycle, and a stressful early environment reduces the variance in inbreeding depression expressed later in life, but does not consistently influence the relative fitness of inbred versus outcrossed individuals.  相似文献

The sub-chronic (28–56 days) effects of exposure to low concentrations of cadmium (Cd; 0·05, 0·25, 0·50 and 2·50 μg l−1) shortly following fertilization on embryos, larvae and juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were examined. Premature hatching occurred at lower concentrations (0·05 and 0·25 μg l−1 Cd), however, delayed hatching was seen in the 2·50 μg l−1 Cd group, with >90% of hatching occurring on the last day of the hatching period. Larval growth was negatively affected by Cd exposure in a concentration-dependent manner. Larvae exposed to 2·50 μg l−1 Cd were 13·9 ± 0·8% shorter in total length ( L T) and weighed 22·4 ± 3·5% (mean ± s . e .) less than controls at the end of the exposure period. Plasma sex steroid concentrations (oestradiol in juvenile females and 11-ketotestosterone in juvenile males) were elevated (four- to 10-fold over controls) in exposed fish in both males and females, following 28 days of exposure to 0·05, 0·25 and 0·50 μg l−1 Cd, respectively. These results suggest that environmentally realistic concentrations (in the μg l−1 range) of Cd can affect the development of O. mykiss impacting embryos, larvae and juvenile fish.  相似文献

California grunion Leuresthes tenuis synchronize spawning with tidal cycles, so the embryos incubate in a terrestrial environment, delay hatching until cued by a specific environmental trigger, and may extend incubation for up to an additional four weeks. These adaptations, however, do not appear to alter the morphology or sequence of early developmental stages as compared to other Atherinomorph fishes in the Orders Beloniformes and Cyprinodontiformes. Embryonic development is described in a series of 30 stages based on morphology observed by light microscopy. Stages are placed in five periods: zygote and cleavage, blastula, gastrula, segmentation and organogenesis, and hatching competence. Embryos from a southern population of L. tenuis in Los Angeles are compared with embryos found >560 km north in San Francisco Bay. Northern L. tenuis embryos developed more slowly at several stages than southern embryos and reached hatching competence later, but both locations maintained synchrony with the tidal cycle for both spawning and hatching. The variation in rates of development and stage at hatching readiness are forms of developmental heterochrony that may be associated with evolutionary adaptation or morphological plasticity within this highly successful clade.  相似文献

The fathead minnow Pimephales promelas serves as a model organism for assessing the effects of environmental contaminants on early life stage growth and development. Yet, the utilization of genomic tools has been hindered by the lack of genome sequence and genomic information known from this model species. Utilizing published cDNA library sequences, the authors used sequence similarity to compare 4105 cDNAs isolated from fathead minnow fry (<14 days old) with over 250 000 adult cDNA sequences derived from whole body and various tissue types. The objectives of the computational subtraction were to (1) assess the extent of sequence similarity between developing and adult cDNA libraries and (2) predict which cDNA clones are expressed only in developing organisms. The results of the computational predictions were assessed through the construction of a development‐specific DNA microarray targeting all 4105 sequences in the fry cDNA library as well as 56 known mRNAs in P. promelas. Gene expression was determined by comparing total RNA isolated from fry with total RNA isolated from adult samples (whole animal, kidney, liver, brain, ovary and testes). The results showed that 1381 of the targeted fry cDNA sequences (34%) displayed expression across all sample comparisons, and of these, only 166 genes were found to harbour fry‐specific expression (i.e. no expression in adult samples). Of note, 69% of the genes computationally predicted to be fry specific were found across all experimental results; yet, only 27% of the computationally predicted fry‐specific sequences were experimentally confirmed to be fry specific. An important result was the identification of many novel mRNA sequences specific to the developing minnow, which lack homology with any other known sequence. In addition, the study results included tissue‐specific expression in adult samples. These results demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of inter‐library sequence comparisons as a predictor of gene activity in non‐sequenced organisms and tissues, as well as DNA microarray gene expression studies in non‐sequenced organisms.  相似文献

The present study assessed the aerial and aquatic visual abilities of juvenile grey bichir Polypterus senegalus, fish capable of terrestrial locomotion, by measuring the optokinetic response to stimuli of varying speed and spatial frequency. In water, fish tracked slow-moving (2° s−1) stimuli moderately well and fast-moving stimuli very poorly. Spatial acuity was very low compared with many other species, with maximum response observed at 0.05–0.075 stimulus cycles per degree of visual arc; however, it should be noted that adult fish, with their larger eyes, are likely to have somewhat improved spatial acuity. Low spatial acuity and limited stimulus tracking ability might be expected in a nocturnal ambush predator such as P. senegalus, where gaze stabilization may be less crucial and other sensory inputs may have greater importance in perception of the environment. In air, spatial and temporal acuity were both poorer by every measure, but some visual ability persisted. As the eye shows no anatomical specialization for aerial vision, poor vision was expected; however, the large decrease in saccade velocity observed in air trials was unexpected. Stimulus parameters typically have little effect on the characteristics of the saccade, so this finding may suggest that the function of the reflex system itself could be compromised in the aerial vision of some fishes capable of terrestrial locomotion.  相似文献

Lipid class dynamics and the relationship between weight and length were analysed during early life stage (ELS) development in wild populations of shortbelly rockfish Sebastes jordani to investigate their utility in a condition or nutritional status assessment. Analyses from more than 3000 field-captured shortbelly rockfish indicated little variation in weight for a given length and provided limited application in the assessment of condition. The fractionation of total lipids into individual classes revealed trends in lipid metabolism throughout development. These trends were described best using a stage-specific regression model, since Sebastes show defined early life history transitions. Among developmental stages, triacylglycerols (TAG) and polar lipids (PL) were the dominant lipid classes and cholesterol (CHOL), sterol/wax esters, and nonesterified fatty acids were found in lower concentrations. In the preflexion stage, low concentrations and constant levels of TAG along with the combined influence of endogenous and exogenous sources of energy compromised the use of TAG as an index of nutritional status. However, during flexion through juvenile stages, TAG levels increased indicating an accumulation of energy reserves with development, thus providing a valid indicator of nutritional status in later stages. Large fluctuations in PL concentrations during development suggested complex metabolism which may be due to changes in cell volume and cell membrane proliferation with development as well as catabolism. CHOL declined in larval stages, then remained constant with increasing size through the juvenile stage, negating its use as a normalizer for variations of mass in a TAG/CHOL ratio prior to juvenile transformation. This study provides the first documentation of lipid dynamics during early life stages following parturition in a marine viviparous teleost.  相似文献

Lateralisation of cognitive function is a common phenomenon found throughout the animal kingdom. In fish, lateralisation is involved in visually mediated behaviours such as schooling, predator avoidance and foraging. This study sought to quantify visual laterality in yellow-eyed mullet (Aldrichetta forsteri), to determine visual asymmetries and the significance of lateralisation, and the factors which influence functional behaviours in schooling fish. Tank-based experiments investigated individual and population level lateralisation, schooling behaviour, and optic lobe asymmetry. Variation in direction and strength of lateralisation in individuals was found in juveniles, but at a population level significant bias was found in adults. Right eye biased fish had a larger right optic lobe than control fish. Strongly lateralised fish showed a tendency to occupy positions of safety within the school more frequently than control fish. In combination with observed differences in schooling behaviour, the possibility of ontogenetic plasticity in behavioural lateralisation and optic lobe morphology is suggested.  相似文献

An efficient method for the in vitro propagation of Agave parrasana Berger, an important ornamental plant species native to the state of Coahuila, México, was developed. Proliferation of good quality shoots was achieved on agar-solidified basal MS medium supplemented with L2 vitamins and 13.3 μM benzyladenine. Rooting was successful in the basal medium with no growth regulators; however, a light intensity of 100 μmol m-2 s-1 was found to promote better rooting than 25 μmol m-2 s-1. The threshold pH for survival of early life stages of pike Esox lucius in post-mining lakes was determined in a laboratory experiment using artificial water characterized by high concentrations of dissolved Ca, Al, Fe, Mn and SO2/4. At pH 3·50–4·00, high mortality was observed before hatching. At pH 4·00 and 4·25, hatching rates were reduced compared with the controls (pH 7·40), and many embryos died in a partly hatched state. Hatching success of embryos exposed to pH levels of 4·50 or higher was not affected. However, at pH 5·00 many newly hatched embryos were deformed. Furthermore, pike exposed to pH 4·00–5·00 did not start feeding. At pH 4·75 and below, mortality increased to 100%, and at pH 5·00, only few eleutheroembryos which were in extremely poor condition survived to the end of the experiment. At pH 5·50, survival was in the same range as in the control group, but growth was reduced. Therefore, early life stages of pike are expected to survive in Lustian post-mining lakes when a pH of 5·50 and above is reached and maintained.  相似文献

The onset of piscivory in fish, resulting in a shift from zooplankton or invertebrate to fish prey, was studied on pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) larvae displaying and not displaying piscivorous behaviour at different ages (23, 30, 37, 44 and 52 days post-hatching) using behavioural (attack, capture and swimming activity), morphological (allometry) and digestive enzymatic (trypsin, α-amylase and pepsin) analyses. The shift from zooplanktonic food items (Artemia nauplii) to a piscivorous diet did not occur at the same time for all individuals within the same cohort. Predation tests, conducted under controlled conditions (20°C; ad libitum feeding), showed that some larvae attacked fish prey as early as the age of 3 weeks [11.0 ± 1.3 mm total length (TL)], whereas others did not start until the age of 6 weeks (16.6 ± 1.9 mm TL). Piscivorous individuals were bigger, with larger heads, longer tails, higher acid protease and lower alkaline protease activities, than non-piscivorous conspecifics. In conclusion, high interindividual variability in morphological and digestive system developments linked to the development of predatory abilities could induce cannibalism in fish.  相似文献

Extended periods of darkness have long been used to study how the mammalian visual system develops in the absence of any instruction from vision. Because of the relative ease of implementation of darkness as a means to eliminate visually driven neural activity, it has usually been imposed earlier in life and for much longer periods than was the case for other manipulations of the early visual input used for study of their influences on visual system development. Recently, it was shown that following a very brief (10 days) period of darkness imposed at five weeks of age, kittens emerged blind. Although vision as assessed by measurements of visual acuity eventually recovered, the time course was very slow as it took seven weeks for visual acuity to attain normal levels. Here, we document the critical period of this remarkable vulnerability to the effects of short periods of darkness by imposing 10 days of darkness on nine normal kittens at progressively later ages. Results indicate that the period of susceptibility to darkness extends only to about 10 weeks of age, which is substantially shorter than the critical period for the effects of monocular deprivation in the primary visual cortex, which extends beyond six months of age.  相似文献

In order to assess the effects of pollution on recruitment of brown trout (Salmo trutta f. fario L.) exposure experiments with brown trout early life stages were performed in two differently contaminated small streams near Stuttgart, southwest Germany, and in a control situation in the laboratory. Pollution in the more polluted stream is mainly due to effluents of municipal sewage treatment plants and to the influx of surface waters from areas of intense agriculture activity. Additionally, the water carries high particle loads, especially after rainfall events. Water quality of the less polluted stream is occasionally influenced by agriculture activity in the vicinity. For the exposure of trout early life stages incubators were used, which allowed frequent examinations without serious disturbance of the exposed organisms and thus the development could be monitored over time. Compared to the less polluted stream and the control, in the more polluted stream high mortality rates, the lowest hatching success, and lowest values for growth occurred. In the less polluted stream, mortality rates were comparably low in prehatching stages, but high in hatchlings and juveniles due to heavy infestations with protozoic ectoparasites Chilodonella cyprini (Moroff, 1902) and Ichthyobodo necator (Henneguy, 1883). However, pollution-related effects were not detected in this stream. Differences in developmental rates between the different treatments were correlated with different water temperatures in the two streams and the control. For the more polluted stream, previous studies have indicated embryotoxic potentials mediated by pollutants. The present study indicates that in this steam, additionally, fine solids which infiltrate stream gravels may seriously affect development of brown trout early life stages.  相似文献

Egg-to-fry development and survival of brown trout Salmo trutta were compared in two rivers of the Pyrenean piedmont, the Nive d'Arnéguy, with few human activities, and the Nive des Aldudes, with many anthropogenic activities including 11 fish farms and two sewage treatment plants (STPs). Survival was estimated between spawning (early December) and emergence time (early March) by means of capsules, 7 cm3 in volume, filled with green eggs then inserted into the gravel of artificial redds at spawning sites. In the Nive des Aldudes, three sets of conditions were studied: a fish farm near the springs, a fish farm and an STP in a village, and a series of fish farms and an STP in a village. In each situation, two artificial redds were created upstream and two others downstream from the fish farms. In the Nive d'Arnéguy, four sites were equipped: each of the two downstream sites with two artificial redds, and the two upstream sites with one redd. Substratum characteristics (proportion of fine particles) and the quality of surface and interstitial water (oxygen content, ammonia and nitrite nitrogen) were periodically measured. There was no redd substratum difference between sites upstream and downstream of fish farms. Survival to fry emergence was higher in the Nive d'Arnéguy (63·5%) than in the Nive des Aldudes (47·7%). In this latter river, the nitrogen released from the STPs was 0·5% that from fish farms. Fish farming impaired survival close to fish farm effluents (31·6%), as compared to survival upstream (63·6%), and induced a development delay during the yolk-sac fry stage. These differences were mainly linked to a drop in the dissolved oxygen content in interstitial water induced by the nitrogen flow in surface and interstitial waters.  相似文献

对104例病人的图形翻转VEP的瞬态波形各参数,以及9例正常或近视学生的稳态曲线功率谱与视力之间的关系进行了多元相关统计分析,旨在探讨VEP的哪些参数可客观地评估视力.结果表明,瞬态VEP的波形参数中以13’格诱发的N_1P_1、P_1N_2的峰峰值及P_(100)潜伏期与视力的相关系数最大,故认为,分析视力时以平均P_(100)波的波幅值和P_(100)波潜伏期作指标较为灵敏;而稳态、VEP能谱曲线则显示,视力与平均相叶能谱或刺激频率点的能谱相关性较大,与二次谐波的相关性则小.  相似文献
