We have examined the photosynthetic acclimation of wheat leaves grown at an elevated CO2 concentration, and ample and limiting N supplies, within a field experiment using free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE). To understand how leaf age and developmental stage affected any acclimation response, measurements were made on a vertical profile of leaves every week from tillering until maturity. The response of assimilation (A) to internal CO2 concentration (Ci) was used to estimate the in vivo carboxylation capacity (Vcmax) and maximum rate of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate limited photosynthesis (A sat). The total activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), and leaf content of Rubisco and the Light Harvesting Chlorophyll a/b protein associated with Photosystem II (LHC II), were determined. Elevated CO2 did not alter Vcmax in the flag leaf at either low or high N. In the older shaded leaves lower in the canopy, acclimatory decline in Vcmax and A sat was observed, and was found to correlate with reduced Rubisco activity and content. The dependency of acclimation on N supply was different at each developmental stage. With adequate N supply, acclimation to elevated CO2 was also accompanied by an increased LHC II/Rubisco ratio. At low N supply, contents of Rubisco and LHC II were reduced in all leaves, although an increased LHC II/Rubisco ratio under elevated CO2 was still observed. These results underscore the importance of leaf position, leaf age and crop developmental stage in understanding the acclimation of photosynthesis to elevated CO2 and nutrient stress. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Over a large part of the photoperiod, light energy absorbed by upper canopy leaves saturates photosynthesis and exceeds the energetic requirements for light‐saturated linear electron flow through photosystem II (JPSII), so that photoinhibition results. From a theoretical consideration of the response of light‐saturated photosynthesis to elevated atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) it may be predicted that, where light‐saturated photosynthesis is Rubisco‐limited, an increase in pCO2 will stimulate JPSII. Therefore, the proportion of absorbed quanta dissipated photochemically will increase and the potential for photoinhibition of photosynthesis will decrease. This was tested by measuring modulated chlorophyll a fluorescence from Quercus myrtifolia Willd. growing in the field in open‐top chambers, at either current ambient or elevated (ambient + 35 Pa) pCO2 on Merritt Island, Florida, USA. During spring and summer, light‐saturated photosynthesis at current ambient pCO2 was Rubisco‐limited. Consistent with theoretical prediction, JPSII was increased and photoinhibition decreased by elevated pCO2 in spring. In the summer, when growth had largely ceased, an acclimatory decrease in the maximum Ribulose 1,5 bisphosphate saturated carboxylation capacity (Vc max) removed the stimulation of JPSII seen in the spring, and photoinhibition was increased in elevated pCO2. It is concluded that, for Q. myrtifolia growing in the field, the effects of elevated pCO2 on JPSII and photoinhibition will reflect seasonal differences in photosynthetic acclimation to elevated pCO2 in a predictable manner.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry, photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle in the senescent flag leaves of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants grown in the field were investigated. Compared to the non-senescent leaves, photosynthetic capacity was significantly reduced in senescent flag leaves. The light intensity at which photosynthesis was saturated also declined significantly. The light response curves of PSII photochemistry indicate that a down-regulation of PSII photochemistry occurred in senescent leaves in particular at high light. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry in senescent flag leaves decreased slightly when measured at predawn but substantially at midday, suggesting that PSII function was largely maintained and photoinhibition occurred in senescent leaves when exposed to high light. At midday, PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centers decreased considerably, while non-photochemical quenching increased significantly. Moreover, compared with the values at early morning, a greater decrease in CO2 assimilation rate was observed at midday in senescent leaves than in control leaves. The levels of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin via the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin increased in senescent flag leaves from predawn to midday. An increase in the xanthophyll cycle pigments relative to chlorophyll was observed in senescent flag leaves. The results suggest that the xanthophyll cycle was activated in senescent leaves due to the decrease in CO2 assimilation capacity and the light intensity for saturation of photosynthesis and that the enhanced formation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin at high light may play an important role in the dissipation of excess light energy and help to protect photosynthetic apparatus from photodamage. Our results suggest that the well-known function of the xanthophyll cycle to safely dissipate excess excitation energy is also important for maintaining photosynthetic function during leaf senescence.  相似文献

Growth at elevated CO2 often decreases photosynthetic capacity (acclimation) and leaf N concentrations. Lower-shaded canopy leaves may undergo both CO2 and shade acclimation. The relationship of acclimatory responses of flag and lower-shaded canopy leaves of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to the N content, and possible factors affecting N gain and distribution within the plant were investigated in a wheat crop growing in field chambers set at ambient (360 μmol mol−1) and elevated (700 μmol mol−1) CO2, and with two amounts of N fertilizer (none and 70 kg ha−1 applied on 30 April). Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration at a common measurement CO2, chlorophyll and Rubisco levels of upper-sunlit (flag) and lower-shaded canopy leaves were significantly lower in elevated relative to ambient CO2-grown plants. Both whole shoot N and leaf N per unit area decreased at elevated CO2, and leaf N declined with canopy position. Acclimatory responses to elevated CO2 were enhanced in N-deficient plants. With N supply, the acclimatory responses were less pronounced in lower canopy leaves relative to the flag leaf. Additional N did not increase the fraction of shoot N allocated to the flag and penultimate leaves. The decrease in photosynthetic capacity in both upper-sunlit and lower-shaded leaves in elevated CO2 was associated with a decrease in N contents in above-ground organs and with lower N partitioning to leaves. A single relationship of N per unit leaf area to the transpiration rate accounted for a significant fraction of the variation among sun-lit and shaded leaves, growth CO2 level and N supply. We conclude that reduced stomatal conductance and transpiration can decrease plant N, leading to acclimation to CO2 enrichment.  相似文献

There is continuing controversy over whether a degree of C4 photosynthetic metabolism exists in ears of C3 cereals. In this context, CO2 exchange and the initial products of photosynthesis were examined in flag leaf blades and various ear parts of two durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) and two six-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars. Three weeks after anthesis, the CO2 compensation concentration at 210 mmol mol?1 O2 in durum wheat and barley ear parts was similar to or greater than that in flag leaves. The O2 dependence of the CO2 compensation concentration in durum wheat ear parts, as well as in the flag leaf blade, was linear, as expected for C3 photosynthesis. In a complementary experiment, intact and attached ears and flag leaf blades of barley and durum wheat were radio-labelled with 14CO2 during a 10s pulse, and the initial products of fixation were studied in various parts of the ears (awns, glumes, inner bracts and grains) and in the flag leaf blade. All tissues assimilated CO2 mainly by the Calvin (C3) cycle, with little fixation of 14CO2 into the C4 acids malate and aspartate (about 10% or less). These collective data support the conclusion that in the ear parts of these C3 cereals C4 photosynthetic metabolism is nil.  相似文献

Acclimation of photosynthetic capacity to elevated CO2 involves a decrease of the leaf Rubisco content. In the present study, it was hypothesized that nitrogen uptake and partitioning within the leaf and among different aboveground organs affects the down-regulation of Rubisco. Given the interdependence of nitrogen and cytokinin signals at the whole plant level, it is also proposed that cytokinins affect the nitrogen economy of plants under elevated CO2, and therefore the acclimatory responses. Spring wheat received varying levels of nitrogen and cytokinin in field chambers with ambient (370 μmol mol−1) or elevated (700 μmol mol−1) atmospheric CO2. Gas exchange, Rubisco, soluble protein and nitrogen contents were determined in the top three leaves in the canopy, together with total nitrogen contents per shoot. Growth in elevated CO2 induced decreases in photosynthetic capacity only when nitrogen supply was low. However, the leaf contents of Rubisco, soluble protein and total nitrogen on an area basis declined in elevated CO2 regardless of nitrogen supply. Total nitrogen in the shoot was no lower in elevated than ambient CO2, but the fraction of this nitrogen located in flag and penultimate leaves was lower in elevated CO2. Decreased Rubisco: chlorophyll ratios accompanied losses of leaf Rubisco with CO2 enrichment. Cytokinin applications increased nitrogen content in all leaves and nitrogen allocation to senescing leaves, but decreased Rubisco contents in flag leaves at anthesis and in all leaves 20 days later, together with the amount of Rubisco relative to soluble protein in all leaves at both growth stages. The results suggest that down regulation of Rubisco in leaves at elevated CO2 is linked with decreased allocation of nitrogen to the younger leaves and that cytokinins cause a fractional decrease of Rubisco and therefore do not alleviate acclimation to elevated CO2.  相似文献

Acclimation of photosynthesis to growth at elevated CO2 concentration varies markedly between species. Species functionally classified as stress-tolerators (S) and ruderals (R), are thought to be incapable, or the least capable, of responding positively in terms of growth to elevated [CO2]. Is this pattern of response also apparent in leaf photosynthesis of wild S- and R-strategists? Acclimatory loss of a photosynthetic and growth response to elevated [CO2] is assumed to reflect limitation on capacity to utilize additional photosynthate. The doubling of pre-industrial global [CO2] is expected to coincide with a 3 °C increase in mean temperature which could stimulate growth; will photosynthetic capacity at elevated [CO2] be greater when the concurrent temperature increase is simulated? Five species from natural grassland of NW Europe and of contrasting ecological strategy were grown in hemispherical greenhouses, environmentally controlled to track the external microclimate. Within a replicated design, plants were grown at (i) current ambient [CO2] and temperature, (ii) elevated [CO2] (ambient + 340 μmol mol–1) and ambient temperature, (iii) ambient [CO2] and elevated temperature (ambient + 3 °C), or (iv) elevated [CO2] and elevated temperature. After 75–104 days, the CO2 response of light-saturated rates of photosynthesis (Asat) was analysed in controlled-environment cuvettes in a field laboratory. There was no acclimatory loss of photosynthetic capacity with growth in elevated [CO2] or elevated temperature over this period in Poa alpina (S), Bellis perennis (R) or Plantago lanceolata (mixed C-S-R strategist), and a significant (P ? ? bl 0.05) increase in capacity in Helianthemum nummularium (S) and Poa annua (R). Photosynthetic rates of leaves grown and measured in elevated [CO2] were therefore significantly higher than rates for leaves grown and measured in ambient [CO2], for all species. With the exception of Poa alpina, stomatal conductance and stomatal limitation on Asat showed no acclimatory response to growth in elevated [CO2]. Carboxylation efficiency, determined from the initial slope of the response of Asat to intercellular CO2 concentration was significantly increased by elevated [CO2] and elevated temperature in H.nummularium, implying a possible increase in in vivo RubisCO activity. Increased carboxylation efficiency of this species was also reflected by an increase in the CO2- and light-saturated rates of photosynthesis, indicating an increased capacity for regeneration of the primary CO2 acceptor in photosynthesis. The results show that R-strategists and slow-growing S-strategists, are inherently capable of large increases in leaf photosynthetic capacity with growth in elevated [CO2] in contrast to expectations from growth studies. With the exception of P.annua, where there was a significant negative interaction between CO2 and temperature, concurrent increase in growth temperature had little effect on this pattern of response.  相似文献

The metabolic basis for observed differences in the yield response of rice to projected carbon dioxide concentrations (CO2) is unclear. In this study, three rice cultivars, differing in their yield response to elevated CO2, were grown under ambient and elevated CO2 conditions, using the free-air CO2 enrichment technology. Flag leaves of rice were used to determine (1) if manipulative increases in sink strength decreased the soluble sucrose concentration for the ‘weak’ responders and (2), whether the genetic expression of sucrose transporters OsSUT1 and OsSUT2 was associated with an accumulation of soluble sugars and the maintenance of photosynthetic capacity. For the cultivars that showed a weak response to additional CO2, photosynthetic capacity declined under elevated CO2 and was associated with an accumulation of soluble sugars. For these cultivars, increasing sink relative to source strength did not increase photosynthesis and no change in OsSUT1 or OsSUT2 expression was observed. In contrast, the ‘strong’ response cultivar did not show an increase in soluble sugars or a decline in photosynthesis but demonstrated significant increases in OsSUT1 and OsSUT2 expression at elevated CO2. Overall, these data suggest that the expression of the sucrose transport genes OsSUT1 and OsSUT2 may be associated with the maintenance of photosynthetic capacity of the flag leaf during grain fill; and, potentially, greater yield response of rice as atmospheric CO2 increases.  相似文献

A spring wheat crop was grown at ambient and elevated (550 μmol mol?1) CO2 concentrations under free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) in the field. Four experimental blocks, each comprising 21-m-diameter FACE and control experimental areas, were used. CO2 elevation was maintained day and night from crop emergence to final grain harvest. This experiment provided a unique opportunity to examine the hypothesis that CO2 elevation in the field would lead to acclimatory changes within the photosynthetic apparatus under open field conditions and lo assess whether acclimation was affected by crop developmental stage, leaf ontogeny and leaf age. Change in the photosynthetic apparatus was assessed by measuring changes in the composition of total leaf and thylakoid polypeptides separated by SDS-PAGE. For leaves at completion of emergence of the blade, growth at the elevated CO2 concentration had no apparent effect on the amount of any of the major proteins of the photosynthetic apparatus regardless of the leaf examined. Leaf 5 on the main stem was in full sunlight at emergence, but then became shaded progressively as 3–4 further leaves formed above with continued development of the crop. By 35 d following completion of blade emergence, leaf 5 was in shade. At this point, the chlorophyll alb ratio had declined by 26% both in plants grown at the control CO2 concentration and in those grown at the elevated CO2 concentration, which is indicative of shade acclimation. The ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) content declined by 45% in the control leaves, but by 60% in the leaves grown at the elevated CO2 concentration. The light- harvesting complex of photosystcm II (LHCII) and the chlorophyll content showed no decrease and no difference between treatments, indicating that the decrease in Rubisco was not an effect of earlier senescence in the leaves at the elevated CO2 concentration. Following completion of the emergence of the flag-leaf blade, the elevated-CO2 treatment inhibited the further accumulation of Rubisco which was apparent in control leaves over the subsequent 14 d. From this point onwards, the flag leaves from both treatments showed a loss of Rubisco, which was far more pronounced in the elevated-CO2 treatment, so that by 36 d the Rubisco content of these leaves was just 70% of that of the controls and by 52 d it was only 20%. At 36 d, there was no decline in chlorophyll, LHCII or the chloroplast ATPase coupling factor (CFI) in the elevated CO2 concentration treatment relative to the control. By 52 d, all of these proteins showed a significant decline relative to the control. This indicates that the decreased concentration of Rubisco at this final stage probably reflected earlier senescence in the elevated-CO2 treatment, but that this was preceded by a CO2-concentration-dependent decline in Rubisco.  相似文献

Previous studies of photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2 have focused on the most recently expanded, sunlit leaves in the canopy. We examined acclimation in a vertical profile of leaves through a canopy of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The crop was grown at an elevated CO2 partial pressure of 55 Pa within a replicated field experiment using free-air CO2 enrichment. Gas exchange was used to estimate in vivo carboxylation capacity and the maximum rate of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate-limited photosynthesis. Net photosynthetic CO2 uptake was measured for leaves in situ within the canopy. Leaf contents of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), light-harvesting-complex (LHC) proteins, and total N were determined. Elevated CO2 did not affect carboxylation capacity in the most recently expanded leaves but led to a decrease in lower, shaded leaves during grain development. Despite this acclimation, in situ photosynthetic CO2 uptake remained higher under elevated CO2. Acclimation at elevated CO2 was accompanied by decreases in both Rubisco and total leaf N contents and an increase in LHC content. Elevated CO2 led to a larger increase in LHC/Rubisco in lower canopy leaves than in the uppermost leaf. Acclimation of leaf photosynthesis to elevated CO2 therefore depended on both vertical position within the canopy and the developmental stage.  相似文献

In this study, we tested for the temporal occurrence of photosynthetic acclimation to elevated [CO2] in the flag leaf of two important cereal crops, rice and wheat. In order to characterize the temporal onset of acclimation and the basis for any observed decline in photosynthetic rate, we characterized net photosynthesis, gs, gm, Ci/Ca, Ci/Cc, Vcmax, Jmax, cell wall thickness, content of Rubisco, cytochrome (Cyt) f, N, chlorophyll and carbohydrate, mRNA expression for rbcL and petA, activity for Rubisco, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SS) at full flag expansion, mid‐anthesis and the late grain‐filling stage. No acclimation was observed for either crop at full flag leaf expansion. However, at the mid‐anthesis stage, photosynthetic acclimation in rice was associated with RuBP carboxylation and regeneration limitations, while wheat only had the carboxylation limitation. By grain maturation, the decline of Rubisco content and activity had contributed to RuBP carboxylation limitation of photosynthesis in both crops at elevated [CO2]; however, the sharp decrease of Rubisco enzyme activity played a more important role in wheat. Although an increase in non‐structural carbohydrates did occur during these later stages, it was not consistently associated with changes in SPS and SS or photosynthetic acclimation. Rather, over time elevated [CO2] appeared to enhance the rate of N degradation and senescence so that by late‐grain fill, photosynthetic acclimation to elevated [CO2] in the flag leaf of either species was complete. These data suggest that the basis for photosynthetic acclimation with elevated [CO2] may be more closely associated with enhanced rates of senescence, and, as a consequence, may be temporally dynamic, with significant species variation.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown under CO2 partial pressures of 36 and 70 Pa with two N-application regimes. Responses of photosynthesis to varying CO2 partial pressure were fitted to estimate the maximal carboxylation rate and the nonphotorespiratory respiration rate in flag and preceding leaves. The maximal carboxylation rate was proportional to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) content, and the light-saturated photosynthetic rate at 70 Pa CO2 was proportional to the thylakoid ATP-synthase content. Potential photosynthetic rates at 70 Pa CO2 were calculated and compared with the observed values to estimate excess investment in Rubisco. The excess was greater in leaves grown with high N application than in those grown with low N application and declined as the leaves senesced. The fraction of Rubisco that was estimated to be in excess was strongly dependent on leaf N content, increasing from approximately 5% in leaves with 1 g N m−2 to approximately 40% in leaves with 2 g N m−2. Growth at elevated CO2 usually decreased the excess somewhat but only as a consequence of a general reduction in leaf N, since relationships between the amount of components and N content were unaffected by CO2. We conclude that there is scope for improving the N-use efficiency of C3 crop species under elevated CO2 conditions.  相似文献

Abstract Long‐term exposure of plants to elevated CO2 often leads to downward photosynthetic acclimation. Nitrogen (N) deficiency could potentially exacerbate this response by reducing growth rate and the sink for photosynthates, but this has not always been observed. Experimentally, the interpretation of N effects on CO2 responses can be confounded by increasing severity of tissue N deficiency over time when N supply is not adjusted as demand increases. In this study, N supply ranged from sub‐ to supra‐optimal (20–540 kgN ha–l equivalent), and relatively stable levels of tissue N concentration were obtained in all treatments by varying twice‐weekly application rates in proportion to plant growth. The effects of N on photosynthesis and growth of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) raised at ambient (35 Pa) and three elevated (70, 105, 140 Pa) CO2 partial pressures (pCO2) were evaluated. Averaging across N treatments, leaf total non‐structural carbohydrates (TNC) were 2.5‐ to 3‐fold higher and leaf N concentrations were 31–35% lower at elevated compared to ambient pCO2. Light‐saturated net CO2 assimilation rates measured at growth pCO2 (Asatg) were significantly higher (26–40% depending on N supply) in plants grown at elevated compared to ambient pCO2. When measured at a common pCO2 of 35 Pa, the Asat of plants grown at elevated CO2 was 15–29% less than that of plants grown at 35 Pa, indicative of downward photosynthetic acclimation. The magnitude of downward photosynthetic acclimation to elevated CO2 was greater in plants grown at high (180 and 540 kgN ha–l) compared to low (20 and 60 kgN ha–l) N supply, and this was associated with a higher Asat at growth pCO2, higher leaf area ratio (leaf area/total biomass), and higher TNC in leaves of high‐N plants. Our results indicate that the effect of N on acclimation to CO2 will depend on the balance between supply and demand for N during the growing period, and the effect this has on biomass allocation and source‐sink C balance at the whole‐plant level.

Rising levels of atmospheric CO2 will have profound, direct effects on plant carbon metabolism. In this study we used gas exchange measurements, models describing the instantaneous response of leaf net CO2 assimilation rate (A) to intercellular CO2 partial pressure (Ci), in vitro enzyme activity assay, and carbohydrate assay in order to investigate the photosynthetic responses of wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Wembley) to growth under elevated partial pressures of atmospheric CO2 (Ca). At flag leaf ligule emergence, the modelled, in vivo, maximum carboxylation velocity for RuBisCO was significantly lower in plants grown at elevated Ca than in plants grown at ambient Ca (70 Pa compared with 40 Pa). By 12 d after ligule emergence, no significant difference in this parameter was detectable. At ligule emergence, plants grown at elevated Ca exhibited reduced in vitro initial activities and activation states of RuBisCO. At their respective growth Ci values, the photosynthesis of 40-Pa-grown plants was sensitive to p(O2) and to p(CO2) whereas that of 70-Pa-grown plants was insensitive. Both sucrose and starch accumulated more rapidly in the leaves of plants grown at 70 Pa. At flag leaf ligule emergence, modelled non-photorespiratory respiration in the light (Rd) was significantly higher in 70-Pa-grown plants than in 40-Pa-grown plants. By 12 d after ligule emergence no significant differences in Rd were detectable.  相似文献

We compared the CO2- and light-dependence of photosynthesis of four tree species (Acer rubrum, Carya glabra, Cercis canadensis, Liquidambar styraciflua) growing in the understory of a loblolly pine plantation under ambient or ambient plus 200 μl l–1 CO2. Naturally-established saplings were fumigated with a free-air CO2 enrichment system. Light-saturated photosynthetic rates were 159–190% greater for Ce. canadensis saplings grown and measured under elevated CO2. This species had the greatest CO2 stimulation of photosynthesis. Photosynthetic rates were only 59% greater for A. rubrum saplings under CO2 enrichment and Ca. glabra and L. styraciflua had intermediate responses. Elevated CO2 stimulated light-saturated photosynthesis more than the apparent quantum yield. The maximum rate of carboxylation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, estimated from gas-exchange measurements, was not consistently affected by growth in elevated CO2. However, the maximum electron transport rate estimated from gas- exchange measurements and from chlorophyll fluorescence, when averaged across species and dates, was approximately 10% higher for saplings in elevated CO2. The proportionately greater stimulation of light-saturated photosynthesis than the apparent quantum yield and elevated rates of maximum electron transport suggests that saplings growing under elevated CO2 make more efficient use of sunflecks. The stimulation of light-saturated photosynthesis by CO2 did not appear to correlate with shade-tolerance ranking of the individual species. However, the species with the greatest enhancement of photosynthesis, Ce. canadensis and L. styraciflua, also invested the greatest proportion of soluble protein in Rubisco. Environmental and endogenous factors affecting N partitioning may partially explain interspecific variation in the photosynthetic response to elevated CO2. Atmospheric CO2 concentration continues to rise. It is important, therefore, to determine what acclimatory changes will occur within the photosynthetic apparatus of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Yecora Rojo) grown in a future high-CO2 world at ample and limited soil N contents. Wheat was grown in an open field exposed to the CO2 concentration of ambient air [370 μmol (CO2) mol−1; Control] and air enriched to ∼200 μmol (CO2) mol−1 above ambient using a Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) apparatus (main plot). A High (35 g m−2) or Low (7 and 1.5 g m−2 for 1996 and 1997, respectfully) level of N was applied to each half of the main CO2 treatment plots (split-plot). Under High-N, FACE reduced stomatal conductance (g s) by 30% at mid-morning (2 h prior to solar noon), 36% at midday (solar noon) and 27% at mid-afternoon (2.5 h after solar noon), whereas under Low-N, g s was reduced by as much as 31% at mid-morning, 44% at midday and 28% at mid-afternoon compared with Control. But, no significant CO2 × N interaction effects occurred. Across seasons and growth stages, daily accumulation of carbon (A′) was 27% greater in FACE than Control. High-N increased A′ by 18% compared with Low-N. In contrast to results for g s, however, significant CO2 × N interaction effects occurred because FACE increased A′ by 30% at High-N, but by only 23% at Low-N. FACE enhanced the seasonal accumulation of carbon (A′′) by 29% during 1996 (moderate N-stress), but by only 21% during 1997 (severe N-stress). These results support the premise that in a future high-CO2 world an acclimatory (down-regulation) response in the photosynthetic apparatus of field-grown wheat is anticipated. They also demonstrate, however, that the stimulatory effect of a rise in atmospheric CO2 on carbon gain in wheat can be maintained if nutrients such as nitrogen are in ample supply. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Mercia) was grown at two different atmospheric CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μmol mol−1), two temperatures [ambient temperature (i.e. tracking the open air) and ambient +4°C] and two rates of nitrogen supply (equivalent to 489 kg ha−1 and 87 kg ha−1). Leaves grown at 700 μmol mol−1 CO2 had slightly greater photosynthetic capacity (10% mean increase over the experiment) than those grown at ambient CO2 concentration, but there were no differences in carboxylation efficiency or apparent quantum yield. The amounts of chlorophyll, soluble protein and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) per unit leaf area did not change with long-term exposure to elevated CO2 concentration. Thus winter wheat, grown under simulated field conditions, for which total biomass was large compared to normal field production, did not experience loss of components of the photosynthetic system or loss of photosynthetic competence with elevated CO2 concentration. However, nitrogen supply and temperature had large effects on photosynthetic characteristics but did not interact with elevated CO2 concentration. Nitrogen deficiency resulted in decreases in the contents of protein, including Rubisco, and chlorophyll, and decreased photosynthetic capacity and carboxylation efficiency. An increase in temperature also reduced these components and shortened the effective life of the leaves, reducing the duration of high photosynthetic capacity.  相似文献

The rates of gross photosynthesis of the flag leaf and the nextleaf below (second leaf) in crops of winter wheat were estimatedfrom the 14C uptake of the leaves after exposure to short pulsesof 14CO2. The photosynthetic rates of both leaves during thegrain-filling period decreased with increase in nitrogen fertilizerbecause the intensity of photosynthetically active radiationwas less at the surface of the leaves in the dense crops withadditional nitrogen. In addition, the rate of photosynthesisat saturating light intensity was slightly decreased by nitrogen. The effects of nitrogen, in decreasing the rate of photosynthesisper unit area of leaf and in increasing the leaf-area indexof the top two leaves, were such that the photosynthetic productivityper unit area of land of the flag leaf was increased by nitrogenbut the productivity of the second leaf was unaffected. Applying180 kg N ha–1 increased the productivity of the top twoleaves by a factor of 2.3 but increased grain yield by only1.8. The photosynthetic productivity of the second leaf duringthe grain-filling period was about half that of the flag leaf. There was no difference in photosynthetic rate per unit areaof leaves of Cappelle-Desprez and Maris Huntsman which couldaccount for the larger yield of the latter cultivar. There wasa slight indication that the leaves of the semi-dwarf cultivarsMaris Fundin and Hobbit photosynthesized faster than those ofMaris Huntsman.
