Morphological and stomatal responses of Norway spruce (Picea abies) foliage to light availability were studied in respect to shoot age. Needle minor diameter (D(1), anatomical width), major diameter (D(2), anatomical thickness), dry weight (M), and tissue density index (I(D)) increased, and needle flatness (Fl) and specific leaf area (SLA) decreased with foliage age, while shade foliage demonstrated higher morphological plasticity as compared to sun foliage. Needle minor diameter, dry weight, and the ratio of total to projected leaf area increased, and needle flatness and specific leaf area decreased with daily average photosynthetic photon flux density (Q(D)). The current-year foliage exhibited the highest variation with irradiance, while the morphological plasticity decreased with needle ageing. The morphological characteristics of needles were independent of irradiance if Q(D) was above 300 μmol m(-2) s(-1). D(1) was the only linear needle characteristic which significantly changed with light availability within a canopy, and thus determined needle flatness, SLA, as well as the ratio of total to projected leaf area (TLA/PLA). Needle flatness was a characteristic responding most sensitively to the photosynthetic photon flux density, R(2) was 0.68, 0.44, and 0.49 for the current-year, 1-year-old, and 2-year-old foliage, respectively. TLA/PLA ranged from 2.2 to 4.0 depending on D(1). Variation in SLA in response to light availability can be attributed to changes both in needle shape and tissue density. Stomatal responses to photosynthetic photon flux density (Q(P)) depended on foliage type (sun or shade) and age. Sun needles demonstrated higher daily maximum leaf conductances to water vapour compared to shade needles. The shade needles responded more sensitively to changes in Q(P) at dawn and sunset than the sun needles, while older needles of both foliage types exhibited faster stomatal responses. The light-saturation of leaf conductance (g(L)) was achieved by 20 μmol m(-2) s(-1) for shade foliage, and approximately by 50 μmol m(-2) s(-1) for sun foliage. As a rule, g(L) changed in response to irradiance faster in the evening, i.e. at decreasing irradiance. Stomata were not usually completely closed in the dark before sunrise and after sunset, the phenomenon being more pronounced in older shoots and sun needles. Nightly water losses from spruce foliage are attributable primarily to older shoots, and are related to age-dependent changes in stomatal responsiveness.  相似文献

Inhibition of photosynthesis was followed during autumn and early winter in current-year sun and shade needles of unfertilized and fertilized Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] by simultaneous measurements of photosynthetic O2 evolution and chlorophyll a fluorescence at 20 °C. The CO2-saturated rate of O2 evolution was generally higher in sun needles of fertilized trees than in those of unfertilized trees over a wide range of incident photon flux densities (PFDs). Furthermore, the maximum photo-chemical efficiency of photosystem (PS) II, as indicated by the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (FV/FM) was generally higher for sun needles of fertilized trees. The depression of fv/fm during frost periods was more pronounced in sun needles than in shade needles, indicating that winter inhibition in Norway spruce is strongly light-dependent. However, the inhibition of the rate of O2 evolution at high PFDs in needles of fertilized trees during early winter was partly independent of the light regime experienced by those needles in the field, which appeared to result in a pronounced decrease in the proportion of oxidized PS II reaction centres in shade needles. A nearly identical linear relationship between the quantum yield of PS II electron transport determined by chlorophyll fluorescence and the quantum yield of O2 evolution (gross rate of O2 evolution/PFD) was obtained for the investigated types of needles during autumn and early winter. Except for shade needles of fertilized trees, this appeared to be largely achieved by adjustments in thermal energy dissipation within PS II.  相似文献

Endophytic fungi show no symptoms of their presence but can influence the performance and vitality of host trees. The potential use of endophytes to indicate vitality has been previously realized, but a standard protocol has yet to be developed due to an incomplete understanding of the factors that regulate endophyte communities. Using a culture-free molecular approach, we examined the extent to which host genotype influences the abundance, species richness, and community composition of endophytic fungi in Norway spruce needles. Briefly, total DNA was extracted from the surface-sterilized needles of 30 clones grown in a nursery field and the copy number of the fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA was estimated by quantitative PCR. Fungal species richness and community composition were determined by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing. We found that community structure and ITS copy number varied among spruce clones, whereas species richness did not. Host traits interacting with endophyte communities included needle surface area and the location of cuttings in the experimental area. Although Lophodermium piceae is considered the dominant needle endophyte of Norway spruce, we detected this species in only 33 % of samples. The most frequently observed fungus (66 %) was the potentially pathogenic Phoma herbarum. Interestingly, ITS copy number of endophytic fungi correlated negatively with the richness of ectomycorrhizal fungi and thus potential interactions between fungal communities and their influence on the host tree are discussed. Our results suggest that in addition to environmental factors, endophyte communities of spruce needles are determined by host tree identity and needle surface area.  相似文献

Summary Shade needles of hybrid larch (Larix decidua × leptolepis) had the same rates of photosynthesis as sun needles per dry weight and nitrogen, and a similar leaf conductance under conditions of light saturation at ambient CO2 (Amax). However, on an area basis, Amax and specific leaf weight were lower in shade than in sun needles. Stomata of sun needles limited CO2 uptake at light saturation by about 20%, but under natural conditions of light in the shade crown, shade needles operated in a range of saturating internal CO2 without stomatal limitation of CO2 uptake. In both needle types, stomata responded similarly to changes in light, but shade needles were more sensitive to changes in vapor pressure deficit than sun needles. Despite a high photosynthetic capacity, the ambient light conditions reduced the mean daily (in summer) and annual carbon gain of shade needles to less than 50% of that in sun needles. In sun needles, the transpiration per carbon gain was about 220 mol mol–1 on an annual basis. The carbon budget of branches was determined from the photosynthetic rate, the needle biomass and respiration, the latter of which was (per growth and on a carbon basis) 1.6 mol mol–1 year–1 in branch and stem wood. In shade branches carbon gains exceeded carbon costs (growth + respiration) by only a factor of 1.6 compared with 3.5 in sun branches. The carbon balance of sun branches was 5 times higher per needle biomass of a branch or 9 times higher on a branch length basis than shade branches. The shade foliage (including the shaded near-stem sun foliage) only contributed approximately 23% to the total annual carbon gain of the tree.  相似文献

Red spruce trees (Picea rubens Sarg.) occasionally produce short twigs bearing short needles. The frequency of short needle cohorts is positively correlated with both elevation and defoliation and they are found in greater numbers on trees that regularly experience winter injury. Short needles are smaller, have lower fresh and dry weights, and reduced volumes compared with normal needles. They have reduced cross-sectional areas due to smaller areas of stelar and mesophyll tissue systems. Individual mesophyll cells, however, have the same cross- and longitudinal sectional areas. On a weight or volume basis, both short and normal needles contain similar amounts of chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments. When pigment concentration was calculated on a unit needle or a needle area base, short needles contain more pigment than normal needles. Short needles appear to have a greater photosynthetic efficiency as determined by fluorescence measurements.  相似文献

Higher temperatures associated with climate change are anticipated to trigger an earlier start to the growing season, which could increase the terrestrial C sink strength. Greater variability in the amount and timing of precipitation is also expected with higher temperatures, bringing increased drought stress to many ecosystems. We experimentally assessed the effects of higher temperature and drought on the foliar phenology and shoot growth of mature trees of two semiarid conifer species. We exposed field‐grown trees to a ~45% reduction in precipitation with a rain‐out structure (‘drought’), a ~4.8 °C temperature increase with open‐top chambers (‘heat’), and a combination of both simultaneously (‘drought + heat’). Over the 2013 growing season, drought, heat, and drought + heat treatments reduced shoot and needle growth in piñon pine (Pinus edulis) by ≥39%, while juniper (Juniperus monosperma) had low growth and little response to these treatments. Needle emergence on primary axis branches of piñon pine was delayed in heat, drought, and drought + heat treatments by 19–57 days, while secondary axis branches were less likely to produce needles in the heat treatment, and produced no needles at all in the drought + heat treatment. Growth of shoots and needles, and the timing of needle emergence correlated inversely with xylem water tension and positively with nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations. Our findings demonstrate the potential for delayed phenological development and reduced growth with higher temperatures and drought in tree species that are vulnerable to drought and reveal potential mechanistic links to physiological stress responses. Climate change projections of an earlier and longer growing season with higher temperatures, and consequent increases in terrestrial C sink strength, may be incorrect for regions where plants will face increased drought stress with climate change.  相似文献

  1. Aphids are abundant in natural and managed vegetation, supporting a diverse community of organisms and causing damage to agricultural crops. Due to a changing climate, periods of drought are anticipated to increase, and the potential consequences of this for aphid–plant interactions are unclear.
  2. Using a meta‐analysis and synthesis approach, we aimed to advance understanding of how increased drought incidence will affect this ecologically and economically important insect group and to characterize any potential underlying mechanisms. We used qualitative and quantitative synthesis techniques to determine whether drought stress has a negative, positive, or null effect on aphid fitness and examined these effects in relation to (a) aphid biology, (b) geographical region, and (c) host plant biology.
  3. Across all studies, aphid fitness is typically reduced under drought. Subgroup analysis detected no difference in relation to aphid biology, geographical region, or the aphid–plant combination, indicating the negative effect of drought on aphids is potentially universal. Furthermore, drought stress had a negative impact on plant vigor and increased plant concentrations of defensive chemicals, suggesting the observed response of aphids is associated with reduced plant vigor and increased chemical defense in drought‐stressed plants.
  4. We propose a conceptual model to predict drought effects on aphid fitness in relation to plant vigor and defense to stimulate further research.

Tree-rings are precious natural archives to assess ecosystem variability over time. Xylem anatomy in woody tissue is a promising source of information in tree-rings since it is closely linked to tree hydraulics and carbon fixation. However, despite the rising interest for cell anatomy in dendrochronology, still little is known about the interpretation of the variability of cell anatomical responses observed across different environments and species. Here we analyze cell anatomical responses to increasing summer drought on 18 trees from 3 conifer species (Picea obovata, Pinus sylvestris, and Larix sibirica) growing in the transition zone between forest and steppe in the Republic of Khakassia (Russia). Analyses include the comparison of tracheid size distributions along climatic gradients and contrasting micro-topography from 1986 to 2008.Results indicate an overall decrease of earlywood tracheid lumen and cell wall thickness to high temperature and drought regardless of species and site conditions. In particular an increase of one degree Celsius during the summer caused up to 5% reduction of earlywood cell lumen and wall thickness. These anatomical shifts suggest that a downscaling of hydraulic efficiency is not paralleled by increased hydraulic safety, presumably due to carbon limitation.Based on the results of this case study, we suggest that increasing drought stress might hamper the formation of a functional xylem structure, thus being a possible trigger for a miss-acclimation causing long-term decline and higher exposure to hydraulic failures. Despite the promising study approach, more studies including more data (trees, years) and broader climatic gradients would be needed to further improve our mechanistic understanding.  相似文献

Summary Dew droplets collected with pipettes from coniferous needles were analysed for their ionic composition. Almost all samples of dew taken from Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) showed significantly higher ion concentrations than those taken from Norway spruce trees (Picea abies). This can be explained by the micromorphology of the needle surface. The higher microscale roughness of the wax layer of a pine needle causes a more efficient flux of atmospheric aerosol particles compared to the spruce needle surface. Dew on coniferous needles is shown to be capable of maintaining pH values below 3 for several hours.  相似文献

At the timberline in the Central Alps, climatic conditions during winter frequently cause excessive drought stress (frost drought, 'Frosttrocknis'), which we hypothesized to induce cavitation in trees. We investigated the extent of winter-embolism in Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) growing near the timberline and analysed adaptations in vulnerability and anatomy. We found conductivity losses of up to 100% at the highest elevation (2020 m) correlated with low water potentials down to − 4.0 MPa. Vulnerability thresholds (50% loss in conductivity) decreased from − 3.39 MPa at 800 m to − 3.88 MPa at 1600 m corresponding to a decrease in tracheid cross-sectional area as well as pit and pit pore diameters. These thresholds were lower than potentials measured in embolized twigs near the timberline at the sampling dates probably due to lower potentials and/or a role of freeze-thaw events earlier in winter. Data indicated refilling processes, which may be of particular relevance for trees at the timberline, since adaptations in drought-induced vulnerability failed to prevent winter-embolism.  相似文献

The influence of long-term free-air ozone fumigation and canopy position on leaf contents of total glutathione, its redox state, non-structural proteins (NSP), soluble amino compounds, and total soluble sugars in old-growth beech (FAGUS SYLVATICA) and spruce (PICEA ABIES) trees were determined over a period of five years. Ozone fumigation had weak effects on the analysed metabolites of both tree species and significant changes in the contents of total glutathione, NSP, and soluble sugars were observed only selectively. Beech leaves were affected by crown position to a higher extent than spruce needles and exhibited lower contents of total glutathione and NSP and total soluble sugars, but enhanced contents of oxidised glutathione and amino compounds in the shade compared to the sun crown. Contents of total soluble sugars generally were decreased in shade compared to sun needles of spruce trees. Interspecific differences between beech and spruce were more distinct in the sun compared to the shade crown. Contents of total glutathione were increased whilst contents of amino compounds and total soluble sugars were lower in spruce needles compared to beech leaves. The metabolites determined showed individual patterns in the course of the five measurement years. Contents of total glutathione and its redox state correlated with air temperature and global radiation, indicating an important role for the antioxidant at low temperatures. Correlations of glutathione with instantaneous ozone concentrations seem to be a secondary effect. Differences in proteins and/or amino compounds in the inter-annual course are assumed to be a consequence of alterations in specific N uptake rates.  相似文献

A field experiment primarily designed for simulating the indirect effects of air pollutants for a 25-year-old Norway spruce stand in SW Sweden is presented (The Skogaby project). Treatment include irrigation; artificial drought; ammonium sulphate addition; nitrogen-free-fertilization and irrigation with liquid fertilizers including a complete set of nutrients. The experiment has a randomized block design with four replicates per treatment. Growth response on an areal basis of basal area, height and dry mass of stems, branches and needles after up to four years of treatment are presented. Dry mass is estimated using allometric equations based on destructive samplings of trees. The stand suffered from temporary water stress during all four years investigated despite 970– 1160 mm of annual precipitation. Irrigation resulted in improved above-ground dry mass production (stem, bark, branches, needles, litter fall) by 20% during the first 3 years of treatment, whereas 2 years of drought treatment followed by 1 year of recovery led to 10% reduced dry mass growth. During year 2 of recovery, however, basal area growth was only about half of that of the control.Nitrogen, markedly, was a growth limiting nutrient, although the stand got approx. 20 kg N ha-1 y-1 from deposition. Ammonium sulphate addition (100 kg N ha-1 y-1) resulted in 31% improved dry mass production whereas irrigation with liquid fertilization (100 kg N ha-1 y-1) including all important nutrient elements led to 57% increased dry mass growth after 3 years of treatment. Basal area growth of the latter treatment gradually increased and during year 4 of treatment was 123% larger than the control. Nitrogen-free-fertilization resulted in a small improvement of dry mass production (+10%).After 3 years of treatment, the amount of needles had increased markedly for both treatments including irrigation, whereas drought treated trees instead had decreased their needle amount vs control. The increase in needle amount occurred as a result of both larger formation of needles and higher preservence of old needles, the opposite relations being found for the drought treated trees. At the same point larger needle formation in combination with a higher shedding of older needles was found for trees treated with ammonium sulphate and nitrogen-free-fertilizer.It is concluded that there is no stage of N saturation in the Skogaby site as there is no leaching of N from the control plots and N fertilization results in both increased tree growth and N uptake.  相似文献

Three-month-old needles of Sitka spruce were less susceptible to Elatobium abietinutn than 15-month-old needles. Symptoms appeared after longer aphid feeding times but only a proportion of damaged needles fell. After short feeding periods symptoms appeared in more Norway spruce needles than in Sitka spruce, whereas longer feeding periods resulted in more needles producing symptoms in the Sitka spruce. The symptoms took 4—6 days longer to appear in Norway spruce, and needle fall followed a longer feeding period than on Sitka spruce. Following 72 h feeding, needle fall occurred more quickly on Sitka spruce than on Norway spruce. The time taken for needle fall to occur was inversely related to the feeding time in Sitka spruce but such a response was not evident in Norway spruce. The results are discussed in relation to the differences exhibited in the probing behaviour of the aphid on the two spruces.  相似文献

Hydraulic vulnerability of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) branchlets decreases with height, allowing shoots at greater height to maintain hydraulic conductance (K shoot) at more negative leaf water potentials (Psi l). To determine the basis for this trend shoot hydraulic and tracheid anatomical properties of foliage from the tops of Douglas-fir trees were analysed along a height gradient from 5 to 55 m. Values of Psi l at which K shoot was substantially reduced, declined with height by 0.012 Mpa m(-1). Maximum K shoot was reduced by 0.082 mmol m(-2) MPa(-1) s(-1) for every 1 m increase in height. Total tracheid lumen area per needle cross-section, hydraulic mean diameter of leaf tracheid lumens, total number of tracheids per needle cross-section and leaf tracheid length decreased with height by 18.4 microm(2) m(-1), 0.029 microm m(-1), 0.42 m(-1) and 5.3 microm m(-1), respectively. Tracheid thickness-to-span ratio (tw/b)2 increased with height by 1.04 x 10(-3) m(-1) and pit number per tracheid decreased with height by 0.07 m(-1). Leaf anatomical adjustments that enhanced the ability to cope with vertical gradients of increasing xylem tension were attained at the expense of reduced water transport capacity and efficiency, possibly contributing to height-related decline in growth of Douglas fir.  相似文献

Summary A transient decline in photosynthetic rate and several correlates of photosynthetic function in year-old shade needles coincided with shoot elongation in 15 fullsib 8-year-old Douglas-fir [Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] saplings. In year-old needles and current year needles collected from May to November from branchlets with a single terminal bud and at least 4 needle age classes, chlorophyll (chl) content, photosynthetic rate and non-photochemical quenching of chl fluorescence declined during the period of flushing of the new shoots and recovered as shoot elongation slowed. Developing shade needles did not achieve the same oxygen evolution rate per unit area as the year-old needles, but did develop a higher quantum yield (estimated from chl a fluorescence). In short, in shade branchlets shoot development occurred at a cost of photosynthetic function in year-old needles. In year-old sun needles collected from the upper portions of the same trees, total protein concentration increased prior to, and decreased during, flushing. The concentration of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) rose and decreased more than chlorophyll-binding proteins. In general, protein concentration in needles reflected age class rather than sun or shade environment. A specific decline in Rubisco in year-old sun needles during the period of new shoot elongation strengthens the hypothesis that degradation of this photosynthetic protein contributes to development of the new shoot.  相似文献

The diversity of endophytic fungi within single symptomless Norway spruce needles is described and their possible role as pioneer decomposers after needle detachment is investigated. The majority (90%) of all 182 isolates from green intact needles were identified as Lophodermium piceae. Up to 34 isolates were obtained from single needles. Generally, all isolates within single needles had distinct randomly amplified microsatellite (RAMS) patterns. Single trees may thus contain a higher number of L. piceae individuals than the number of their needles. To investigate the ability of needle endophytes to act as pioneer decomposers, surface-sterilized needles were incubated on sterile sand inoculated with autoclaved or live spruce forest humus layer. The dry weight loss of 13-17% found in needles after a 20-week incubation did not significantly differ between the sterilized and live treatments. Hence, fungi surviving the surface sterilization of needles can act as pioneer decomposers. A considerable portion of the needles remained green during the incubation. Brown and black needles, in which the weight loss had presumably taken place, were invaded throughout by single haplotypes different from L. piceae. Instead, Tiarasporella parca, a less common needle endophyte, occurred among these invaders of brown needles. Needle endophytes of Norway spruce seem thus to have different abilities to decompose host tissues after needle cast. L. piceae is obviously not an important pioneer decomposer of Norway spruce needles. The diversity of fungal individuals drops sharply when needles start to decompose. Thus, in single needles the decomposing mycota is considerably less diverse than the endophytic mycota.  相似文献

Studies of selected morphological needle parameters were carried out on young (17–19 year old) Norway spruce trees cultivated inside glass domes at ambient (A, 370 μmol (CO2) mol−1) and elevated (E, 700 μmol (CO2) mol−1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations [CO2] beginning in 1997. Annual analyses performed from 2002 to 2004 revealed higher values for needle length (especially for current needles, up to 18%) and projected needle area (up to 13%) accompanied by lower values for specific needle area (up to 15% lower, as quantified by needle mass to projected area ratio) in the E treatment compared to the A treatment. Statistically significant differences for most of the investigated morphological parameters were found in young needles in the well irradiated sun-adapted crown parts, particularly under water-limiting soil conditions in 2003. This was likely a result of different water relations in E compared to A trees as investigated under temperate water stress (Kuper et al. in Biol Plantarum 50:603–609, 2006). Furthermore, E trees had much higher absorbing root area, which modified and enhanced root:shoot as well as root:conductive stem area proportions. These hydraulic properties and early seasonal stimulation of photosynthesis forced advanced needle development in E trees, particularly under limited soil water conditions. The number of needles per unit shoot length was found to be unaffected by elevated [CO2].  相似文献

Cross‐linking mass spectrometry has developed into an important method to study protein structures and interactions. The in‐solution cross‐linking workflows involve time and sample consuming steps and do not provide sensible solutions for differentiating cross‐links obtained from co‐occurring protein oligomers, complexes, or conformers. Here we developed a cross‐linking workflow combining blue native PAGE with in‐gel cross‐linking mass spectrometry (IGX‐MS). This workflow circumvents steps, such as buffer exchange and cross‐linker concentration optimization. Additionally, IGX‐MS enables the parallel analysis of co‐occurring protein complexes using only small amounts of sample. Another benefit of IGX‐MS, demonstrated by experiments on GroEL and purified bovine heart mitochondria, is the substantial reduction of undesired over‐length cross‐links compared to in‐solution cross‐linking. We next used IGX‐MS to investigate the complement components C5, C6, and their hetero‐dimeric C5b6 complex. The obtained cross‐links were used to generate a refined structural model of the complement component C6, resembling C6 in its inactivated state. This finding shows that IGX‐MS can provide new insights into the initial stages of the terminal complement pathway.  相似文献

Summary This investigation was conducted to obtain information about the fluctuations in composition and amount of needle monoterpenes during the development of spruce needles. Studies conducted with two Norway spruce clones clearly revealed the existence of fluctuations. In juvenile needles, the amounts of the oxygenated terpenes increase constantly with age during the first 2 months of needle growth. The hydrocarbon terpenes dominate within the first weeks, some of them even showing a very distinct first maximum within the first 3 weeks after bud burst. All terpenes, including the oxygenated ones, have a maximum in June/July, which favours the hypothesis of a substitution of the hydrocarbons later on. There are significant changes even in mature needles of Norway spruce. The terpene level of 1-year-old needles of the clonal trees increased from spring to early summer and then dropped again towards winter. In addition, fluctuations in mature needles were shown for a set of ten wild trees. Needles of the same age class, which emerged in 1986, were sampled 4 times from 1986 to 1988. The needle terpene concentrations of the 1 -year-old needles were considerably lower in spring at the time of bud burst than in autumn. The terpene level of older needles thus seems to be influenced by biosynthetic and catabolic activities.  相似文献
