B chromosomes are additional, usually unstable constituents of the genome of many organisms. Their origin, however, is often unclear and their evolutionary relevance is not well understood. They may range from being deleterious to neutral or even beneficial. We have followed the genetic fate of B chromosomes in the asexual, all-female fish Poecilia formosa over eight generations. In this species, B chromosomes come in the form of one to three tiny microchromosomes derived from males of the host species that serve as sperm donors for this gynogenetic species. All microchromosomes have centromeric heterochromatin but usually only one has a telomere. Such microchromosomes are stably inherited, while the telomereless are prone to be lost in both the soma and germline. In some cases the stable microchromosome carries a functional gene lending support to the hypothesis that the B chromosomes in P. formosa could increase the genetic diversity of the clonal lineage in this ameiotic organism and to some degree counteract the genomic decay that is supposed to be connected with the lack of recombination.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of a population of Caiman crocodilus fuscus were estimated by monthly counting of eye-shines at night, from February 1999 to March 2000 in six transects of Río Frío in the Ca?o Negro National Refuge (RNVSCN), Northern Costa Rica. March was the month with the greatest abundance of caimans observed. The visible fraction of the population (PV2 index) fluctuated between 42.59% to 54.71% during the wet season and 35.49% to 53.93% in the dry season. The transects of river with greater abundance of caimans were Terrón-Sabogal and Sabogal-Playuela. Significant differences were determined in the abundance of caimans between transects, except the transects Entrada San Sebastían-Las Cubas and Las Cubas-Entrada Ca?o Los Patos and Entrada Ca?o Los Patos-Terrón and Boca Sabogal-Playuela. The population of estimated brown caiman in this study was 2283.48 +/- 313.5. The statistical analysis by seasons did not show significant differences in the number of caimans observed. Estimated mean number of caimans per km of river was 74.36/km for 30.7 km of habitat. The results of this study indicated that the fluctuation in population density during the seasons is attributable to local movements.  相似文献

Cytogenetical analyses based on conventional and differential staining were performed for the first time on five species of the Brazilian lizard genus Enyalius: E. bibronii, E. bilineatus, E. iheringii, E. leechii, and E. perditus. The species share a similar 2n = 36 (12M + 24m) karyotype, comprised of 12 metacentric or submetacentric macrochromosomes, except for an acrocentric pair 6 that characterizes E. bibronii. The 24 microchromosomes were acrocentrics, but in E. perditus two meta/submetacentric microchromosome pairs were unambiguously identified. Karyotypes with 2n = 37 and 2n = 37/38 chromosomes were also observed in some specimens of E. bilineatus as a result of the presence of supernumerary chromosomes (Bs). Ag-NORs were always located at the distal region of the long arm of the submetacentric pair 2. The constitutive heterochromatin was mostly restricted to the pericentromeric regions of some macrochromosomes and microchromosomes. A XX:XY mechanism of sex determination with a dot-like Y microchromosome occurs in E. bilineatus, E. leechii, and E. perditus.  相似文献

The genus Erythrinus belongs to the family Erythrinidae, a neotropical fish group. This genus contains only two described species, Erythrinus erythrinus being the most widely distributed in South America. Six samples of this species from five distinct Brazilian localities and one from Argentina were studied cytogenetically. Four groups were identified on the basis of their chromosomal features. Group A comprises three samples, all with 2n = 54 chromosomes, a very similar karyotypic structure, and the absence of chromosome differentiation between males and females. One sample bears up to four supernumerary microchromosomes, which look like 'double minute chromosomes' in appearance. Groups B-D comprise the three remaining samples, all sharing an X(1)X(1)X(2)X(2)/X(1)X(2)Y sex chromosome system. Group B shows 2n = 54/53 chromosomes in females and males, respectively, and also shows up to three supernumerary microchromosomes. Groups C and D show 2n=52/51 chromosomes in females and males, respectively, but differ in the number of metacentric, subtelocentric, and acrocentric chromosomes. In these three groups (B-D), the Y is a metacentric chromosome clearly identified as the largest in the complement. The present results offer clear evidence that local samples of E. erythrinus retain exclusive and fixed chromosomal features, indicating that this species may represent a species complex.  相似文献

In freshwater Neotropical fishes, supernumerary chromosomes or B chromosomes have been found in 61 species so far, distributed in 16 families of seven different orders and in distinct hydrographic basins. The order Characiformes is the one that possesses the most species with these chromosomes, including 31 species from six different families. The order Siluriformes has 21 species from five families, with Rhamdia , of the family Heptapteridae, being the most common genus where these chromosomes are found. The order Perciformes has five species with B chromosomes in only one family, Cichlidae, and the orders Beloniformes, Cyprinodontiformes, Gymnotiformes and Synbranchiformes contain only one species each with extra chromosomes. They are found as microchromosomes in Schizodon , Astyanax , Moenkhausia , Cyphocharax , Steindachnerina , Prochilodus , Rhamdia , Iheringichthys and Loricaria , among others, up to supernumerary macrochromosomes as in Astyanax , varying in morphology as well as number, showing evidence of the wide diversity of B chromosomes in Neotropical fishes.  相似文献

Although B chromosomes have been reported in many species of plants and animals, few studies have revealed the presence of these extra chromosomes in lizards. B chromosomes of lizards show different morphologies and sizes, from microchromosomes to macrochromosomes, or elements of intermediate size between smaller and larger A chromosomes, and number variability at intra- and inter-individual levels. In most cases, they are late-replicating and show either heterochromatic or no distinctive patterns after C-banding. The great majority of the publications about supernumerary chromosomes in this group have been based on conventional staining analyses, and there is no study designed to address questions related to their composition and structure or origin and evolution.  相似文献

In the asexual all-female fish species Poecilia formosa, the Amazon molly, supernumerary chromosomes have frequently been found in both laboratory-reared and wild-caught individuals. While wild-caught individuals with B chromosomes are phenotypically indifferent from conspecifics, individuals carrying B chromosomes from recent introgression events in the laboratory show phenotypic changes. Former analyses showed that the expression of a pigment cell locus is associated with the presence of these B chromosomes. In addition, they contain a so far unidentified locus that confers a higher susceptibility to tumor formation in the presence of pigmentation pattern. Isolation by microdissection and hybridization to metaphase chromosomes revealed that they contain one or several sequences with similarity to a highly repetitive pericentromeric and subtelomeric sequence in A chromosomes. Isolation of one particular sequence by AFLP showed that the B chromosomes contain at least 1 copy of an A-chromosomal region which is highly conserved in the whole genus Poecilia, i.e. more than 5 million years old. Hypostomus sp 3-Córrego Salobrinha NUP 4247 and Hypostomus sp 2-Rio Perdido NUP 4249, collected in the Planalto da Bodoquena, Paraguay River basin, Brazil, were characterized cytogenetically. Hypostomus sp 3-Córrego Salobrinha showed two modal numbers. This polymorphism consists of the presence of two extrachromosomes. It was not possible to define the diploid number in four specimens, where cell lineages had 2n = 83 and 2n = 84 chromosomes in one individual, and 2n = 82, 2n = 83 and 2n = 84 chromosomes in the others. These results reveal the existence of a genetic mosaic due to the occurrence of one or two extrachromosomes in this species. Hypostomus sp 2-Rio Perdido NUP 4249 showed a 2n = 84, FN = 106 with size heteromorphism in one pair of chromosomes stained with AgNO3. In both species, C banding showed a pattern of heterochromatin distribution with a few small bands in the centromeric and pericentromeric regions coinciding with chromomycin A3 staining. Until now, the major diploid number for the genus Hypostomus was 2n = 80, but the species studied here had chromosomes that in creased this number and the variation for this genus. Our results are also the first cytogenetic data on Hypostomus from the Paraguay River basin.  相似文献

Chromosomes of Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae (10 males and 20 females) collected from a tributary of the Tietê River (Botucatu, S.P. Brazil) were examined using kidney and testicular cells. Both males and females presented 2n=50 chromosomes and 1 to 8 small supernumerary microchromosomes. C-banding demonstrated positively stained heterochromatic blocks in almost every chromosome and a pattern of interstitial bands located in the same position in relation to the centromere on the long arm of a large number of chromosomes. Two large NORs were detected in pair 19 of all the silver-stained metaphases; zero to 6 additional small NORs were detected in other chromosomes. A general survey of the occurrence of supernumerary chromosomes in fishes is presented.  相似文献

Karyotypes of chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus; 2n = 78) and mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos; 2n = 80) share the typical organization of avian karyotypes including a few macrochromosome pairs, numerous indistinguishable microchromosomes, and Z and W sex chromosomes. Previous banding studies revealed great similarities between chickens and ducks, but it was not possible to use comparative banding for the microchromosomes. In order to establish precise chromosome correspondences between these two species, particularly for microchromosomes, we hybridized 57 BAC clones previously assigned to the chicken genome to duck metaphase spreads. Although most of the clones showed similar localizations, we found a few intrachromosomal rearrangements of the macrochromosomes and an additional microchromosome pair in ducks. BAC clones specific for chicken microchromosomes were localized to separate duck microchromosomes and clones mapping to the same chicken microchromosome hybridized to the same duck microchromosome, demonstrating a high conservation of synteny. These results demonstrate that the evolution of karyotypes in avian species is the result of fusion and/or fission processes and not translocations.  相似文献

B chromosomes are reported in three different Amazonian cichlid species. One to three supernumerary microchromosomes were detected in the peacock bass Cichla monoculus (4 out of 28 specimens) and Cichla sp. (4 out of 13 specimens), and pike cichlids Crenicichla reticulata (2 out of 5 specimens), with no similar standard chromosomal morphology. C-banding revealed that B chromosomes are totally heterochromatic. We suggest two scenarios for the origin of these B chromosomes either by chromosomal breakdowns due to mutagenic action of methyl mercury present in the aquatic environment or by interspecific origin due to hybridization events.  相似文献

Since the foundation of the "Asociación Espa?ola de Micología" thirty years ago, we have consolidated the Spanish mycological community and also witnessed remarkable changes, not only in the Spanish society but in the scientific community as a whole. As it usually happens to human beings, during this time the "Asociación Espa?ola de Micología" has matured transforming itself into a solid scientific society. However, the "Asociación Espa?ola de Micología" will have to continue its transformation to adapt to new changes. The physical ends of mammalian and other vertebrate chromosomes consist of tandemly repeated (TTAGGG)(n) hexamers, nucleating a specialized telomeric structure. However, (TTAGGG)(n) sequences can also occur at non-telomeric sites, providing important insights into karyotypic evolution. By fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) we studied the chromosomal distribution of (TTAGGG)(n) sequences in 16 bird species, representing seven different orders. Many species, in particular the ratites, display (TTAGGG)(n) hybridization signals in interstitial and centromeric regions of their macrochromosomes in addition to the typical telomeric signals. In some but not all species these non-telomeric sites coincide with C-band-positive heterochromatin. The retention and/or amplification of telomeric (TTAGGG)(n) repeats at interstitial and centromeric sites may indicate the fusion of ancestral chromosomes. Compared with the macrochromosomes, the microchromosomes of most species are enriched with (TTAGGG)(n) sequences, displaying heterogeneous hybridization patterns. We propose that this high density of (TTAGGG)(n) repeats contributes to the exceptionally high meiotic recombination rate of avian microchromosomes.  相似文献

The spider genus Selenops Latreille, 1819 occurs in both the Old World and New World tropics and subtropics and contains nearly half of the species in the family Selenopidae Simon, 1897. In this paper the members of the genus Selenops found in North America, Central America, and on islands of the Caribbean are revised, excluding Cuban endemics. No taxonomic changes are currently made to the species from the southwestern United States. In total, 21 new species are described, including Selenops arikoksp. n., Selenops chamelasp. n., Selenops amonasp. n., Selenops bawekasp. n., Selenops bocacanadensissp. n., Selenops enriquillosp. n, Selenops ixchelsp. n., Selenops huetocatlsp. n., Selenops kalinagosp. n., Selenops oviedosp. n., Selenops morrosp. n., Selenops deniasp. n., Selenops duansp. n., Selenops malinalxochitlsp. n., Selenops oricuajosp. n., Selenops petenajtoysp. n., Selenops guerrerosp. n., Selenops makimakisp. n., Selenops souligasp. n., Selenops wilmotorumsp. n., and Selenops wilsonisp. n. Six species names were synonymized: Selenops lunatus Muma, 1953 syn. n. =Selenops candidus Muma, 1953; Selenops tehuacanus Muma 1953 syn. n., Selenops galapagoensis Banks, 1902 syn. n. and Selenops vagabundus Kraus, 1955 syn. n. = Selenops mexicanus Keyserling, 1880; Selenops santibanezi Valdez-Mondragón, 2010 syn. n. = Selenops nigromaculatus Keyserling, 1880; and Selenops salvadoranus Chamberlin, 1925 syn. n. = Selenops bifurcatus Banks, 1909. Lectotypes are designated for the following three species: Selenops marginalis F. O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1900 (♂), Selenops morosus Banks, 1898 (♂), and Selenops mexicanus Keyserling, 1880 (♀). The female neotype is designated for Selenops aissus Walckenaer, 1837. The males of Selenops bani Alayón-García, 1992 and Selenops marcanoi Alayón-García, 1992 are described for the first time, and the females of Selenops phaselus Muma, 1953 and Selenops geraldinae Corronca, 1996 are described for the first time. Almost all species are redescribed, barring Cuban endemics and a few species recently described. New illustrations are provided, including those of the internal female copulatory organs, many of which are illustrated for the first time. Chromosomes of the Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa, a unisexual species of hybrid origin, were investigated by C-banding, silver staining, and fluorescent staining with DAPI, quinacrine dihydrochloride, and chromomycin A3. Analysis of heterochromatin distribution indicates that chromosomes similar to the W chromosome of P. latipinna are not present in the unisexual species. Therefore, morphologically differentiated sex chromosomes do not form the basis of the unisexuality in P. formosa. The number and location of nucleolar organizer regions vary in P. formosa and do not correlate well with those of the parental species.  相似文献

The distribution of various isochore families on mitotic chromosomes of domestic chicken and Japanese quail was studied by the method of fluorescence in situ DNA--DNA hybridization (FISH). DNA of various isochore families was shown to be distributed irregularly and similarly on chromosomes of domestic chicken and Japanese quail. The GC-rich isochore families (H2, H3, and H4) hybridized mainly to microchromosomes and a majority of macrochromosome telomeric regions. In chicken, an intense fluorescence was also in a structural heterochromatin region of the Z chromosome long arm. In some regions of the quail macrochromosome arms, hybridization was also with isochore families H3 and H4. On macrochromosomes of both species, the pattern of hybridization with isochores of the H2 and H3 families resembled R-banding. The light isochores (L1 and L2 families) are mostly detected within macrochromosome internal regions corresponding to G bands, whereas microchromosomes lack light isochores. Although mammalian and avian karyotypes differ significantly in organization, the isochore distribution in genomes of these two lineages of the warm-blooded animals is similar in principle. On macrochromosomes of the two avian species studied, a pattern of isochore distribution resembled that of mammalian chromosomes. The main specific feature of the avian genome, a great number of microchromosomes (about 30% of the genome), determines a compositional specialization of the latter. This suggests the existence of not only structural but also functional compartmentalization of the avian genome.  相似文献

Paracreptotrema heterandriae n. sp. (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae) is described from the intestine of the freshwater fish Heterandria bimaculata (Teleostei: Poeciliidae) from the upper basin of Río La Antigua, in Veracruz, Mexico. The new species is distinguished from the 3 others in the Paracreptotrema Choudhury, Pérez-Ponce de León, Brooks, and Daverdin, 2006 , mainly by having a feeble membranous cirrus sac containing an uncoiled seminal vesicle, instead of a well-developed muscular cirrus sac that encloses coiled seminal vesicle, pars prostatica, and ejaculatory duct as in the previously 3 nominal species. Moreover, eggs of the new species are larger than all others ([measurements in micrometers] eggs of P. heterandriae n. sp. 72.5 [70-75] × 40 [35-41]; P. blancoi 55.4 [52.5-62.5] × 38.5 [32.5-42.5]; P. mendezi 46 × 37; P. profundulusi 57 [52-60] × 27.8 [25-30]).  相似文献

Acetocarmine squashes of root tips have demonstrated that 2n = 20 and 38 in Saxifraga virginiensis. These contrast with the earlier reported count of 2n = 28 for this species. In several populations supernumerary chromosomes were detected. Both intrapopulational and interpopulational variation in supernumerary chromosome number were detected, with the largest number of supernumerary chromosomes observed being six. Because these supernumerary chromosomes are equal in size to many of the smaller A chromosomes during mitotic metaphase, the presence of supernumerary chromosomes in this species could not be ascertained by analysis of mitotic metaphase preparations alone. During mitotic prophase, however, the supernumerary chromosomes of S. virginiensis are highly heterochromatic, appearing more densely coiled and darkly stained than the A chromosomes. This characteristic facilitated the recognition of supernumerary chromosomes in this species. The similarity in size of A and supernumerary chromosomes during mitotic metaphase and the observation of six supernumerary chromosomes in one population suggest that the count of 2n = 28 reported earlier for S. virginiensis may actually be a misinterpretation of 2n = 20 plus 8 supernumerary chromosomes. Furthermore, these findings and the observation of this same supernumerary chromosome phenomenon in other species of Saxifraga raise the possibility that some of the many disparate chromosome counts attributed to aneuploidy in the large genus Saxifraga may also be the result of misinterpretations of supernumerary chromosomes as A chromosomes.  相似文献

The Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa, is an all-female fish of hybrid origin which reproduces by gynogenesis, i.e. it depends on sperm of males of closely related species to trigger parthenogenetic development of the embryo. Therefore the offspring is clonal and identical to the mother. In rare cases the exclusion mechanism fails and paternal introgression occurs. This may result either in triploid offspring - if the whole haploid chromosome set of the sperm fuses with the diploid egg nucleus - or in siblings with microchromosomes - if only subgenomic amounts of paternal DNA are included. In one of our diploid, microchromosome-carrying laboratory stocks we observed eight triploid individuals which all developed into males. We investigated the mitotic and meiotic chromosomes, the synaptonemal complex (SC), and sperm production of these males, and compared them to males of the gonochoristic parental species (P. latipinna and P. mexicana) and their hybrids. This comparison revealed that P. formosa males are functional males with reduced effective fertility. They show a deviation from the typical 23 bivalents in the synaptonemal complexes as well as in diakinesis due to the triploid state. They produced offspring but only with gynogenetic Amazon molly females. This shows that the probably aneuploid sperm from P. formosa males can trigger parthenogenetic development of unreduced eggs.  相似文献

Cytogenetic studies were performed in two syntopic species of Characidium, C. lauroi and Characidium sp. cf. C. alipioi, from Ribeir?o Grande, Paraíba do Sul river basin. Both species have diploid number 2n=50 chromosomes, but differ in chromosome shape, C-banding pattern and location of nucleolar organizing regions. In Characidium sp. cf. C. alipioi a new type of ZW sex chromosome system composed of equal sized metacentric chromosomes is reported for the first time in the genus Characidium. Species of Characidium with a sex chromosome system form a monophyletic group. Variations in this system are interpreted as resulting from geographic isolation among allopatric species.  相似文献
