Maternal stress can have long‐term adverse consequences on immunocompetence and disease risk of offspring, and winter survival is a crucial demographic parameter in the life‐history of an individual that can substantially affect northern rodent population dynamics. An understanding of the effects of maternal stress on winter survival of offspring may help identify mechanisms driving population fluctuations of northern small mammals. Thus, we assessed the effects of maternal stress, resulting from high population densities, on winter survival of first generation (F1) and second generation (F2) in root voles Microtus oeconomus. Replicate high‐ and low‐density enclosed parental populations were established, from which we obtained F1 generation that were used to establish new enclosed, equal‐density populations. The adults of the high‐density parental populations had higher corticosterone levels, an indication of physiological stress, than did those of the low‐density parental populations. Over‐winter survival of the F1 generation voles from the low‐density parental populations was greater than that of those from the high‐density parental populations. Over‐winter survival of F2 generation voles did not differ between the two treatments. Our results suggest that maternal stress affected over‐winter survival of first generations but not second generations. Reduced immunocompetence, resulting from high population density stresses, transferred to offspring may be a factor in annual (winter) population declines. Because the effect is transitory, i.e. immunocompetence of F2 voles is not affected, reduced immunocompetence resulting from high density stresses would not contribute to lengthy periods of low population densities that are characteristic of multi‐annual population fluctuations.

Tawny owl reproduction and offspring sex ratios have been considered to depend on the abundance of small voles. We studied reproductive performance (laying date, clutch and brood size) during 1995–2003 and offspring sex ratios from 1999 to 2003 in relation to the abundance of small voles and food delivered to the nest in a tawny owl population in southern Finland. Abundance of small voles (field and bank voles) was based on trappings in the field, and estimates of food delivery was based on diet analysis of food remains in the nest boxes. In this population, reproductive output was not related to the abundance of small voles. Analysis of food delivered to the nest showed that the prey weight per offspring varied more than twofold between years and revealed that this difference was mainly related to the proportion of water voles in the diet. Only the number of water voles correlated with laying dates. Offspring sex ratios were weakly male biased (55%) but did not differ from parity. Sex ratios were not related to the abundance of small voles, and we found no evidence that parents delivered more food to nests with proportionally more offspring of the larger (female) sex. Our results underline the notion that populations may differ in their sex allocation pattern, and suggest such differences may be due to diet.

Two populations of male prairie voles, one derived from an outbred laboratory colony and the second consisting of F1 offspring of wild-trapped voles, were tested for responsiveness to photoperiod. Animals were reared from birth until 35 days of age either in 16L:8D or 8L:16D photoperiods. Short day lengths did not affect the reproductive apparatus of the laboratory-strain voles; however, offspring of wild-caught voles manifested arrested development of the reproductive system in short photoperiods. These results suggest that selection processes associated with laboratory husbandry can alter responsiveness to photoperiod; the use of wild-trapped animals or their F1 progeny is indicated in photoperiodism research.

Differential investment in offspring by parental and progeny gender has been discussed and periodically analyzed for the past 80 years as an evolutionary adaptive strategy. Parental investment theory suggests that parents in poor condition have offspring in poor condition. Conversely, parents in good condition give rise to offspring in good condition. As formalized in the Trivers-Willard hypothesis (TWH), investment in daughters will be greater under poor conditions while sons receive greater parental investment under good conditions. Condition is ultimately equated to offspring reproductive fitness, with parents apparently using a strategy to maximize their genetic contribution to future generations. Analyses of sex ratio have been used to support parental investment theory and in many instances, though not all, results provide support for TWH. In the present investigation, economic strategies were analyzed in the context of offspring sex ratio and survival to reproductive age in a Zapotec-speaking community in the Valley of Oaxaca, southern Mexico. Growth status of children, adult stature, and agricultural resources were analyzed as proxies for parental and progeny condition in present and prior generations. Traditional marriage practice in Mesoamerican peasant communities is patrilocal postnuptial residence with investments largely favoring sons. The alternative, practiced by ~25% of parents, is matrilocal postnuptial residence which is an investment favoring daughters. Results indicated that sex ratio of offspring survival to reproductive age was related to economic strategy and differed significantly between the patrilocal and matrilocal strategies. Variance in sex ratio was affected by condition of parents and significant differences in survival to reproductive age were strongly associated with economic strategy. While the results strongly support TWH, further studies in traditional anthropological populations are needed.

According to parental investment theory, nest defence activity should be related to the reproductive value of the offspring. Alternative hypotheses suggest that defence activity may, for example, depend upon the conspicuousness of the young. Studies concerning this topic have been carried out almost exclusively on birds and experimental data on the diversity of organisms is lacking. Bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus were used to study the effects of the number and age of offspring upon the pup defence activity of mothers. Male bank voles are infanticidal and thus an adult male was used as a predator. Defence trials were conducted in the laboratory and filmed for subsequent analysis. Litter sizes were divided into three treatment groups: reduced (−2 pups), control (±0 pups) and enlarged (+2 pups). In order to study the effect of offspring age upon maternal defence activity the trials were conducted twice: when the pups were 3 and 8 days old. Defence activity increased with the number of offspring and enlarged litters were most actively defended. This result supports parental investment theory and conclusions drawn by earlier studies of birds. However, in contrast to the conclusions of earlier studies, older offspring were defended less than the younger ones. Whilst new-born pups are totally defenceless against predators their vulnerability decreases as they age. Therefore, we suggest that maternal aggression in female bank voles is related to the value as well as to the vulnerability of the offspring. The validity of this explanation and the determinants of parental investment decisions in small mammals in general deserve further study. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine modifies social behavior in a number of species, including humans. Because the neural substrates for social behavior in prairie voles are sexually dimorphic, we tested whether the effects of fluoxetine on these behaviors differ by sex. Parental and pair-bonded voles were chronically treated with fluoxetine or saline and subsequently tested for parental responsiveness. Fluoxetine-treated animals displayed a longer latency to exhibit parental responsiveness than did saline-treated controls (p< 0.02), but they did not differ in other aspects of parental care. There were no sex differences in the effects of fluoxetine on parental behavior. After completion of the tests for parental behavior, the subjects were tested for aggressive behavior using the resident–intruder paradigm. Fluoxetine-treated males displayed less aggressive behavior than their saline-treated counterparts (p< 0.02). Although we did not find any effects of fluoxetine on aggressive behavior in females, no significant interaction was found between sex and treatment. Fluoxetine did not alter nonsocial behaviors. The findings suggest that serotonin influences social behavior in prairie voles.

This study examined whether neonatal paternal deprivation (PD: father was removed and pups were raised just by mother) or early deprivation (ED: pups were raised by both parents except separated from not only the dam but also the peers for three hours a day from PND 0 to 13) has long-term effects on anxiety and social behaviors of adult mandarin voles. Newborn mandarin voles of F2 generation were randomly assigned to one of three groups: bi-parental care (PC: pups were raised by both parents), PD and ED. The parental care behaviors of F1 generation were observed at the age of 0, 13 and 21 days (PND 0, 13, 21) of F2 generation of PC and PD groups. Moreover, each mandarin vole of F2 generation received an open field test and a social interaction test on PND 70 and PND 75, respectively. No significant differences of parental behavior were observed between mothers and fathers from PC families, showing typical parental behavior of socially monogamous rodents. In addition, no significant differences of maternal behaviors were found between mothers from PC and PD families, indicating no maternal compensation towards pups for the absence of the paternal care. In the open field test, mandarin voles from both PD and ED families displayed higher levels of anxiety and lower locomotor activity, relative to offspring of PC family. In the social interaction test, both PD and ED mandarin voles also showed lower levels of social behavior and higher levels of anxiety. Thus, both PD and ED significantly increase anxiety and reduce social behavior of adult mandarin voles, suggesting that variation in parental investment may lead to variation in anxiety and social behaviors in rodents with different mating systems.

Skewed adult sex ratios sometimes occur in populations of free‐living animals yet the proximate mechanisms, timing of sex‐biases, and the selective agents contributing to skew remain a source of debate with contradictory evidence from different systems. We investigated potential mechanisms contributing to sex biases in a population of herring gulls with an apparent female skew in the adult population. Theory predicts that skewed adult sex ratios will adaptively lead to skewed offspring sex ratios to restore balance in the effective breeding population. Parents may also adaptively bias offspring sex ratios to increase their own fitness in response to environmental factors. Therefore, we expected to detect skewed sex ratios either at hatching or at fledging as parents invest differentially in offspring of different sexes. We sampled complete clutches (n = 336 chicks) at hatching to quantify potential skews in sex ratios by position in the hatch order, time of season, year, and nesting context (nest density), finding no departure from equal sex ratios at hatching related to any of these factors. Further, we sampled 258 chicks at near‐fledging to investigate potential sex biases in survival at the chick stage. Again, no biases in sex ratios were recorded. Male offspring were favored in this population via greater maternal investment in eggs carrying male embryos and greater parental provisioning of male offspring which reached greater sizes by fledging. Despite the advantages realized by male offspring, females were equally as likely to fledge as males. Thus, biased adult sex ratios apparently arise in the post‐fledging and pre‐recruitment stage in our population.

Sex allocation theory has been remarkably successful at explaining the prevalence of even sex ratios in natural populations and at identifying specific conditions that can result in biased sex ratios. Much of this theory focuses on parental sex determination (SD) strategies. Here, we consider instead the evolutionary causes and consequences of mixed offspring SD strategies, in which the genotype of an individual determines not its sex, but the probability of developing one of multiple sexes. We find that alleles specifying mixed offspring SD strategies can generally outcompete alleles that specify pure strategies, but generate constraints that may prevent a population from reaching an even sex ratio. We use our model to analyze sex ratios in natural populations of Tetrahymena thermophila, a ciliate with seven sexes determined by mixed SD alleles. We show that probabilistic SD is sufficient to account for the occurrence of skewed sex ratios in natural populations of T. thermophila, provided that their effective population sizes are small. Our results highlight the importance of genetic drift in sex ratio evolution and suggest that mixed offspring SD strategies should be more common than currently thought.
