What role does a man's intelligence play in women's mate preferences? Selecting a more intelligent mate often provides women with better access to resources and parental investment for offspring. But this preference may also provide indirect genetic benefits in the form of having offspring who are in better physical condition, regardless of parental provisioning. Intelligence then may serve as both a cue of a mate's provisioning abilities and his overall heritable phenotypic quality. In the current study, we examined the role of a man's intelligence in women's long- and short-term mate preferences. We used a rigorous psychometric measure (men's WAIS scores) to assess intelligence (the first study to our knowledge), in addition to women's subjective ratings to predict mate appeal. We also examined the related trait of creativity, using women's ratings as a first step, to assess whether creativity could predict mate appeal, above and beyond intelligence. Finally, we examined whether preferences for intelligent and creative short-term mates shifted according to a woman's conception risk. Multilevel modeling was used to identify predictors of mate appeal. Study participants (204 women) assessed the long- and short-term mate appeal of videos of 15 men with known measures of intelligence performing verbal and physical tasks. Findings indicate that both intelligence and creativity independently predicted mate appeal across mating contexts, but no conception-risk effects were detected. We discuss implications of these findings for the role of intelligence and creativity in women's mate choices.  相似文献

Human mate choice is complicated, with various individual differences and contextual factors influencing preferences for numerous traits. However, focused studies on human mate choice often do not capture this multivariate complexity. Here, we consider multiple factors simultaneously to demonstrate the advantages of a multivariate approach to human mate preferences. Participants (N = 689) rated the attractiveness of opposite-sex online dating profiles that were independently manipulated on facial attractiveness, perceived facial masculinity/femininity, and intelligence. Participants were also randomly instructed to either consider short- or long-term relationships. Using fitness surfaces analyses, we assess the linear and nonlinear effects and interactions of the profiles' facial attractiveness, perceived facial masculinity/femininity, and perceived intelligence on participants' attractiveness ratings. Using hierarchical linear modeling, we were also able to consider the independent contribution of participants' individual differences on their revealed preferences for the manipulated traits. These individual differences included participants' age, socioeconomic status, education, disgust (moral, sexual, and pathogen), sociosexual orientation, personality variables, masculinity, and mate value. Together, our results illuminate various previously undetectable phenomena, including nonlinear preference functions and interactions with individual differences. More broadly, the study illustrates the value of considering both individual variation and population-level measures when addressing questions of sexual selection, and demonstrates the utility of multivariate approaches to complement focused studies.  相似文献

Attachment orientations of anxiety and avoidance are associated with many important romantic relationship outcomes. An evolutionary perspective has informed research on the associations between attachment orientations and mate retention behaviors, which individuals perform to retain their romantic partner and maintain their relationship. In the current article, we report two dyadic studies (n = 104, United States; n = 978, Germany, Switzerland, Austria) that evaluated: (1) whether bivariate associations between attachment orientations and mate retention domains are replicable; (2) whether an individual's attachment orientation predicts their partner's mate retention behaviors; and (3) whether, over time, mate retention behaviors predict attachment orientations within couples. Results of both studies replicated previous bivariate associations between attachment anxiety and cost-inflicting mate retention behaviors. Longitudinal dyadic data from Study 2 demonstrated that cost-inflicting mate retention behaviors, specifically, predict future attachment anxiety in romantic partners. These results contribute to the emerging body of research addressing the associations between attachment orientations and mate retention behaviors, and suggest an important (bidirectional) role of attachment anxiety in predicting negative partner-directed behaviors in romantic relationships.  相似文献

Researchers have suggested that more attractive women will show stronger preferences for masculine men because such women are better placed to offset the potential costs of choosing a masculine mate. However, evidence for correlations between measures of women's own attractiveness and preferences for masculine men is mixed. Moreover, the samples used to test this hypothesis are typically relatively small. Consequently, we conducted two large-scale studies that investigated possible associations between women's preferences for facial masculinity and their own attractiveness as assessed from third-party ratings of their facial attractiveness (Study 1, N = 454, laboratory study) and self-rated attractiveness (Study 2, N = 8972, online study). Own attractiveness was positively correlated with preferences for masculine men in Study 2 (self-rated attractiveness), but not Study 1 (third-party ratings of facial attractiveness). This pattern of results is consistent with the proposal that women's beliefs about their own attractiveness, rather than their physical condition per se, underpins attractiveness-contingent masculinity preferences.  相似文献

We tested the ability of a Euclidean algorithm to predict attraction to potential mates—a relatively upstream domain in the temporal sequence of the mating process. Participants in two studies reported their ideal mate preferences using a 23-item preference instrument. Separately, they rated their attraction to profiles of potential mates that varied on those 23 dimensions. Study 1 (N = 522) found that Euclidean distances predicted attraction to potential mates both in terms of (1) overall mate value and (2) unique mate value. Study 2 (N = 411) replicated these effects and further found that Euclidean mate values discriminatively predict between short- and long-term attraction. Across both studies, a Euclidean model outperformed a variety of alternative models for predicting attraction to potential mates. These results suggest that a Euclidean algorithm is a good model for how multiple preferences are integrated in mate choice.  相似文献

Researchers have reported perceived differences in trainability between different dog breeds. These reports could either be the result of underlying differences in learning or differences in physical capabilities. Four studies were conducted to investigate this issue. In Study 1 the level of agility metal-winners amongst those breeds perceived to be high and low in trainability did not deviate significantly from their respective levels of participation in the sport. In Study 2 the level of precision amongst those dogs perceived to be high and low in trainability did not deviate significantly in a real agility competition (P > 0.05), but these dogs did differ in speed (P < 0.05). In Study 3 the amount of training time necessary to achieve agility precision mastery did not significantly differ amongst dogs from breeds perceived to be high and low in trainability (P > 0.05), but there was a significant difference in speed. Finally, in Study 4 breeds considered to be high in trainability were found to be relatively physically homogenous in respects to height, in comparison to breeds considered to be low in trainability. Overall, the results of these studies are more supportive of a physical capability interpretation of perceived breed differences in trainability, than a more cognitive interpretation.  相似文献

We report experimental results consistent with the hypothesis that constraints on the expression of male mating preferences affect breeder fitness, offspring viability and performance. If constraints on the expression of mating preferences are common, tests of fitness variation associated with mate preferences must eliminate as many constraints on mate preferences as possible. We tested whether male mate preferences influenced breeder fitness, offspring performance and viability in typically polygynous house mice, Mus domesticus, from a feral source population. Our ‘free mate choice’ trials not only eliminated female preferences, male-male and female-female competition, but also our best guesses of the traits mediating choosers' preferences. Males mated with their preferred (P) females sired more litters than males mated with their nonpreferred (NP) females. Offspring viability was significantly lower when males' reproduced with females they did not prefer compared with females they did prefer. Adult sons of males that mated with their P females were socially dominant to sons of males that mated with their NP females. Adult offspring from P pairings built better nests than offspring from NP pairings. The slope of the survivorship curve for P offspring was significantly higher than for NP offspring. These results showed (1) males' mate preferences affected their fitness, (2) males that mated with females they preferred produced more litters than males that mated with females they did not prefer, and (3) their offspring were significantly more viable and performed significantly better on standardized performance tests. Careful media filtration prior to use is an important part of a mycoplasma contamination prevention program. This study was conducted to increase our knowledge of factors that influence efficient filtration of mycoplasma. The cell size of Acholeplasma laidlawii was measured after culture in various nutritional conditions using scanning electron microscopy. The maximum cell size changed, but the minimum cell size remained virtually unchanged and all tested nutritional conditions resulted in a population of cells smaller than 0.2 μm. Culture in Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB) resulted in an apparent increase in the percentage of very small cells which was not reflected in increased penetration of non-retentive 0.2 μm rated filters. A. laidlawii cultured in selected media formulations was used to challenge 0.2 μm rated filters using mycoplasma broth base as the carrier fluid. We used 0.2 μm rated filters as an analytical tool because A. laidlawii is known to penetrate 0.2 μm filters and the degrees of penetration can be compared. Culture of A. laidlawii in TSB resulted in cells that did not penetrate 0.2 μm rated filters to the same degree as cells cultured in other media such as mycoplasma broth or in TSB supplemented with 10% horse serum.  相似文献

An overall evaluation of potential relationship partners (mate value) is fundamental to numerous key lifetime decisions, but how people integrate the diverse component traits of mate value remains poorly understood. Three within-subjects studies (N = 190) contrast multiple models of mate value trait integration, including both compensatory and non-compensatory decision-making strategies. A weighted additive model outperformed equal weight and take-the-best strategies (Study 1), as well as an aspiration model, threshold model, Euclidean distance from ideal / realistic ideal models, and correlation to ideal / realistic ideal models (Studies 2 and 3). These results contrast with suggestions that mate value decisions should be non-compensatory or follow a Euclidean distance model. Correlational models are particularly poor fits to how people make mate choice decisions. The methodology developed here allows more sensitive assessments to reveal in finer detail the mental algorithms that guide this process. Further extensions can incorporate additional aspects of real-world assessments and mating decisions.  相似文献

We tested predictions from four hypotheses to explain the occurrence of long-term socially monogamous pairs in the Caribbean cleaning goby Elacatinus (=Gobiosoma) evelynae, namely (1) resource limitation, (2) low population and/or low mate density, (3) territorial defence and (4) net benefit of single-mate sequestration. We found no evidence that resources, in terms of available cleaning stations or clients to clean, were limited (1) or that after experimental goby removals, single individuals could not maintain cleaning stations alone (2). Population density was low but this did not prevent artificially widowed fish from remating quickly with individuals as large as their initial partners (3). Social monogamy in E. evelynae appears to result from the benefits associated with sequestering a large, high-quality mate (4). Both males and females showed intrasexual aggression towards experimental intruders consistent with mate guarding. Opportunities for polygynous matings by males, assessed by comparing the sizes, distances between and mating synchrony of neighbouring pairs, appeared both low and of limited value. Males therefore benefit most from guarding a larger, more fecund female. Females spent longer cleaning when paired with a large male, indicating that the benefits of guarding a high-quality mate may extend outside of the reproductive period for socially monogamous species. These results add to an increasing number of studies on coral reef fish showing mate-guarding behaviour and benefits to males and females from sequestering a single mate. We studied the association between extrapair paternity (EPP) rate and male mating status in the rock sparrow, Petronia petronia, a facultative polygynous species. Overall, 32.0% (58/181) of the chicks were not sired by the social father and 57.1% (24/42) of the broods contained at least one extrapair young. Polygynous males allocated less time to guarding their mate during her fertile period than monogamous males but did not differ in the time spent guarding their nest. Polygynous males were cuckolded more frequently than monogamous males (50.5 and 6.6% of the young, respectively) and their paternity loss was positively correlated with the degree of overlap between the fertile periods of their primary and secondary females. Paternity loss did not differ between primary and secondary broods of polygynous males and acquiring a second mate was possible only at the expense of paternity in both broods. Late broods contained fewer extrapair young, despite no significant seasonal trend in the time allocated by the male to guarding his mate. Male yellow badge size was not associated with paternity. Old males were cuckolded less frequently than first-year males, but male age had a minor effect on paternity compared with male mating status. Reproductive success (number of young fledged/year) did not differ between monogamous and polygynous males once paternity was accounted for. Together, these results suggest that mate guarding can be efficient in preventing cuckoldry, and that there is a trade-off between attracting an additional mate and protecting paternity in the rock sparrow, whereas male age and phenotype were, at best, fair predictors of paternity. The morning after each experimental condition, teens rated their hunger, underwent a 24-hour diet recall interview, and rated the appeal of a series of pictures of sweet/dessert foods (e.g., ice cream, candy) and non-sweets (meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables).ResultsTeens rated pictures of sweet/dessert foods to be more appealing after SR than after HS (Cohen’s d = .41, t = 2.07, p = .045). The sleep manipulation did not affect self-reported hunger or the appeal of non-sweet foods (p >.10). Consistent with our prior work, intake of overall calories was 11% higher and consumption of sweet/dessert servings was 52% greater during SR than HS.ConclusionsAdolescent SR appears to increase the subjective appeal of sweet/dessert foods, indicating a potential mechanism by which SR might contribute to weight gain and the risk for obesity and chronic illness.  相似文献

Men's voices may provide cues to overall condition; however, little research has assessed whether health status is reliably associated with perceivable voice parameters. In Study 1, we investigated whether listeners could classify voices belonging to men with either relatively lower or higher self-reported health. Participants rated voices for speaker health, disease likelihood, illness frequency, and symptom severity, as well as attractiveness (women only) and dominance (men only). Listeners' were mostly unable to judge the health of male speakers from their voices; however, men rated the voices of men with better self-reported health as sounding more dominant. In Study 2, we tested whether men's vocal parameters (fundamental frequency mean and variation, apparent vocal tract length, and harmonics-to-noise ratio) and aspects of their self-reported health predicted listeners' health and disease resistance ratings of those voices. Speakers' fundamental frequency (fo) negatively predicted ratings of health. However, speakers' self-reported health did not predict ratings of health made by listeners. In Study 3, we investigated whether separately manipulating two sexually dimorphic vocal parameters—fo and apparent vocal tract length (VTL)—affected listeners' health ratings. Listeners rated men's voices with lower fo (but not VTL) as healthier, supporting findings from Study 2. Women rated voices with lower fo and VTL as more attractive, and men rated them as more dominant. Thus, while both VTL and fo affect dominance and attractiveness judgments, only fo appears to affect health judgments. Results of the above studies suggest that, although listeners assign higher health ratings to speakers with more masculine fo, these ratings may not be accurate at tracking speakers' self-rated health.  相似文献

Mate retention is classically considered advantageous for reproduction in monogamous birds: because of their low fecundity, long-lived species should show the highest year-to-year mate fidelity. However, this hypothesis remains controversial: several studies have found no correlation between mate fidelity and longevity, possibly because they did not control for potential confounding factors on each of these parameters, and one study found a negative correlation in the Procellariiformes (albatrosses and petrels). We re-examined the relations between mate fidelity and longevity, and between mate fidelity and site fidelity, in this group, using our data on 13 species and data from the literature, and after eliminating confounding factors. Procellariiformes are the most long lived of birds despite important interspecific variation in body size, and they show strong mate fidelity and bear high costs of divorce. All species lay only one egg, and the most long lived breed biennially. Because large organisms live longer than small ones and their reproductive effort is lower, we had to control for breeding frequency and body size. Mate fidelity and adult life expectancy were positively correlated, regardless of whether we controlled for these two parameters. We also evaluated whether mate fidelity was related to site fidelity. Biennial albatrosses show high mate fidelity, but low nest fidelity, although they are extremely faithful to a small area around their previous nest. After controlling for body size, adult life expectancy and breeding frequency, we found no correlation between mate fidelity and site fidelity. Because divorce is costly and mate retention advantageous in Procellariiformes, we suggest that mate fidelity does not passively result from site fidelity in these species. We propose that one function of competitive information sharing is success in intrasexual competition. We posit that the decision to share potentially damaging information about a competitor is sensitive to the probability of that information diminishing a competitor's mate value. According to Sexual Strategies Theory (Buss & Schmitt, 1993), men and women have evolved different psychological mechanisms underlying short-term and long-term mating strategies, and display somewhat different (although partially overlapping) preferences for long-term and short-term mate choice. In two experiments, we utilized a 2?×?2 factorial within-subjects design to manipulate a potential mate's mating strategy (long-term vs. short-term) and characteristics of a rival indicative of the rival's mating strategy (long-term vs. short-term). We predicted that participants would be more likely to share information about a competitor when that information mismatched the potential mate's preferences, thereby decreasing the perceived mate value of the competitor. Using Linear Mixed Effects Modeling, Study 1 found that men and women reported that they would be more likely to share that a competitor was promiscuous when the potential mate was interested in a long-term mate than when the potential mate was interested in a short-term mate. Study 2 demonstrated similar findings for ratings of effectiveness of sharing the information. Taken together, the two studies support the central hypothesis about the role of negative information sharing in intrasexual competition and the context-specificity of its deployment depending on mating strategy pursued.  相似文献

A variety of non-human females do not select male partners independently. Instead they favor males having previous associations with other females, a phenomenon known as mate copying. This paper investigates whether humans also exhibit mate copying and whether consistent positive information about a man’s mate value, and a woman’s age and self-perceived mate value (SPMV), influence her tendency to copy the mate choices of others. Female university students (N?=?123) rated the desirability of photographed men pictured alone or with one, two, or five women represented by silhouettes. In accordance with the visual arrays, men were described as currently in a romantic relationship; having previously been in one, two, or five relationships; or not having had a romantic relationship in the past 4 years. Women generally rated men pictured with one or two previous partners as more desirable than those with none. Men depicted with five previous partners, however, were found to be less desirable. Younger, presumably less experienced women had a greater tendency to mate copy compared with older women, but high SPMV did not predict greater levels of mate copying. The findings reaffirmed and expanded those suggesting that women do not make mate choices independently.  相似文献

Sexual conflict results in a diversity of sex‐specific adaptations, including chemical additions to ejaculates. Male decorated crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus) produce a gelatinous nuptial gift (the spermatophylax) that varies in size and free amino acid composition, which influences a female's willingness to fully consume this gift. Complete consumption of this gift maximizes sperm transfer through increased retention of the sperm‐containing ampulla, but hinders post‐copulatory mate choice. Here, we examine the effects of protein (P) and carbohydrate (C) intake on the weight and amino acid composition of the spermatophylax that describes its gustatory appeal to the female, as well as the ability of this gift to regulate sexual conflict via ampulla attachment time. Nutrient intake had similar effects on the expression of these traits with each maximized at a high intake of nutrients with a P : C ratio of 1 : 1.3. Under dietary choice, males actively regulated their nutrient intake but this regulation did not coincide with the peak of the nutritional landscape for any trait. Our results therefore demonstrate that a balanced intake of nutrients is central to regulating sexual conflict in G. sigillatus, but males are constrained from reaching the optima needed to bias the outcome of this conflict in their favour.  相似文献

Music is a human universal, which suggests a biological adaptation. Several evolutionary explanations have been proposed, covering the entire spectrum of natural, sexual, and group selection. Here we consider the hypothesis that musical behaviour constitutes a reliable or even costly signal of fitness, and thus may have evolved as a human trait through sexual selection. We experimentally tested how musical performance quality (MPQ), in improvisations on the drums, saxophone, and violin, affects mate values and mate preferences perceived by a prospective partner. Swedish student participants (27 of each sex) saw a face of a person of the opposite sex and heard a piece of improvised music being played. The music occurred in three levels of MPQ and the faces in three levels of facial attractiveness (FA). For each parametric combination of MPG and FA, the participants rated four mate value scales (intelligence, health, social status, and parenting skill) and four mate preference scales (date, intercourse, and short- and long term relationship). Consistent with sexual selection theory, mate value ratings were generally increased by MPQ for raters of both sexes. Consistent with more specific hypotheses that follow from combining sexual selection and parental investment theory, women’s but not men’s preference for a long-term, but not short-term, relationship was significantly increased by MPQ, MPQ generally affected women’s ratings more than men’s, FA generally affected men’s ratings more than women’s, and women’s ratings of intelligence were even more influenced by MPQ than by FA.  相似文献

In sequentially polyandrous birds, a female's second mate faces a substantial risk of cuckoldry due to rapid mate switching and stored sperm. Secondary males are potentially available to females because males arrive asynchronously and/or are recycled into the breeding pool following nest predation. In a study of red-necked phalaropes, Phalaropus lobatus, a sex-role reversed shorebird, we tested the hypotheses that the proportion of females that become polyandrous is proximately limited by: (1) the ability of females to produce eggs, (2) the availability of males as mates and (3) male mate choice. In a colour-banded population in which rates of nest loss were manipulated by researchers, females that produced second clutches required similar lengths of time to complete clutches as those contemporaneously producing first clutches, and increased their egg size relative to their first clutch, making egg limitation unlikely. There was no correlation between an annual measure of males' availability as potential mates following nest losses and the proportion of females that were polyandrous. The majority of males that lost clutches (66%) re-paired with their original female significantly more often than expected by random mate choice (P<0.0001). Although 76% of polyandrous nestings involved renesting males, only 6% (N=46) of renesting males changed mates if their original female was still available. Renesting males that changed mates did not select for or against females that had already produced clutches (NS). Our results suggest that the level of polyandry in this species is not constrained by the females' abilities to produce more eggs or by the number of males recycling back into the breeding pool. Instead, the proportion of females that become polyandrous is limited by males choosing to renest with their original females, thereby decreasing their probability of caring for eggs potentially fertilized by a female's previous mate.  相似文献

The gregarious parasitoid Cotesia glomerata (L.) is often presumed to possess the characteristic attributes of a species that manifests local mate competition (LMC), as it commonly produces female-biased broods. However, our field surveys of sex ratio and laboratory observations of adult behaviour showed that this species is subject to partial local mate competition caused by natal dispersal. On average, 30% of males left their natal patch before mating, with the proportion of dispersing males increasing with an increase in the patch's sex ratio (i.e. proportion of males). Over 50% of females left their natal patch before mating, and only 27.5% of females mated with males emerging from the same natal patch. Although females showed no preference between males that were and were not their siblings, broods from females that mated with siblings had a significantly higher mean brood sex ratio (0.56) than broods from females that mated with nonsiblings (0.39). Furthermore, brood sex ratios increased as inbreeding was intensified over four generations. A field population of this wasp had a mean brood sex ratio of 0.35 over 3 years, which conformed well to the evolutionarily stable strategy sex ratio (r=0.34) predicted by Taylor's partial sibmating model for haplodiploid species. These results suggest that the sex allocation strategy of C. glomerata is based on both partial local mate competition in males and inbreeding avoidance in females.
