The adaptive fitness of a freeze-tolerant insect may be mediated by both endogenous and exogenous interactions. The aim of the study presented here was to characterize the freeze tolerance of alpine Tiger moth caterpillars (Metacrias huttoni) and highlight two poorly explored indices of the potential attrition of fitness: (1) downstream development and reproduction; (2) parasitism. Caterpillars survived temperatures as low as −16°C and demonstrated >90% 72-h survival after exposures to −10°C. Two-week acclimations at 5, 10, and 20°C had no effect on body water content, haemolymph osmolality or survival of equilibrium freezing, but there was a significant elevation of the temperature of crystallization (T c) in those caterpillars acclimated to 5°C. Cell viability of fat body tissue was resilient to freezing (−10 to −16°C), but midgut and tracheal cells showed significant degradation. Pupation and eclosion were unaffected by freezing at −5 or −10°C. Likewise, there were no significant differences in egg production or the proportion of eggs that hatched between control and frozen insects. By contrast, the ability of tachinid larvae to survive freezing within their hosts means that parasitism plays an important role in regulating population size. Mean parasitism of caterpillars by tachinids was 33.3 ± 7.2%. Pupation and imago emergence of tachinids after host ‘endo-nucleation’ was >75%. Eclosed adult tachinids showed a non-significant increase in the incidence of wing abnormalities in relation to low temperature exposure.  相似文献

Urban environments are habitat mosaics, often with an abundance of exotic flora, and represent complex problems for foraging arboreal birds. In this study, we used compositional analysis to assess how Blue Tits Cyanistes caeruleus and Great Tits Parus major use heterogeneous urban habitat, with the aim of establishing whether breeding birds were selective in the habitat they used when foraging and how they responded to non‐native trees and shrubs. We also assessed whether they showed foraging preferences for certain plant taxa, such as oak Quercus, that are important to their breeding performance in native woodland. Additionally, we used mixed models to assess the impact of these different habitat types on breeding success (expressed as mean nestling mass). Blue Tits foraged significantly more in native than non‐native deciduous trees during incubation and when feeding fledglings, and significantly more in deciduous than evergreen plants throughout the breeding season. Great Tits used deciduous trees more than expected by chance when feeding nestlings, and a positive relationship was found between the availability of deciduous trees and mean nestling mass. Overall, the breeding performance of both species was poor and highly variable. Positive relationships were found between mean nestling mass and the abundance of Quercus for Great Tits, but not for Blue Tits. Our study shows the importance of native vegetation in the complex habitat matrix found in urban environments. The capacity of some, but not all, species to locate and benefit from isolated patches of native trees suggests that species vary in their response to urbanization and this has implications for urban ecosystem function.  相似文献

Theory predicts that temporal variability plays an important role in the evolution of life histories, but empirical studies evaluating this prediction are rare. In constant environments, fitness can be measured by the population growth rate lambda, and the sensitivity of lambda to changes in fitness components estimates selection on these traits. In variable environments, fitness is measured by the stochastic growth rate lambda(S), and stochastic sensitivities estimate selection pressure. Here we examine age-specific schedules for reproduction and survival in a barn owl population (Tyto alba). We estimated how temporal variability affected fitness and selection, accounting for sampling variance. Despite large sample sizes of old individuals, we found no strong evidence for senescence. The most variable fitness components were associated with reproduction. Survival was less variable. Stochastic simulations showed that the observed variation decreased fitness by about 30%, but the sensitivities of lambda and lambda(S) to changes in all fitness components were almost equal, suggesting that temporal variation had negligible effects on selection. We obtained these results despite high observed variability in the fitness components and relatively short generation time of the study organism, a situation in which temporal variability should be particularly important for natural selection and early senescence is expected.  相似文献

Predation may be a significant factor in the divergence of sympatric species although its role has been largely overlooked. This study examines the consequences of predation on the fitness of a pair of lacustrine stickleback species (Gasterosteus aculeatus complex) and their F(1) hybrids. Benthic sticklebacks are found in the littoral zone of lakes associated with vegetation and bare sediments, whereas limnetic sticklebacks spend most of their lives in the pelagic zone. The cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki) is a major predator of sticklebacks and the only other fish species native to lakes containing both benthic and limnetic species. In pond experiments we found that the addition of these predators primarily impacted the survival of limnetics. By contrast, benthic survival was unaffected by trout addition. The result was that relative survival of benthics and limnetics was reversed in the presence of trout. The presence of trout had no effect on the rank order of parent species growth rates, with benthics always growing faster than limnetics. F(1) hybrids survived poorly relative to benthics and limnetics and their growth rates were intermediate regardless of treatment. The results implicate predation by trout in the divergence of the species but not through increased vulnerability of F(1) hybrids.  相似文献

Double infections of Wolbachia and Spiroplasma are frequent in natural populations of Tetranychus truncatus, a polyphagous mite species that has been a dominant species in China since 2009. However, little is known about the causes and ecological importance of such coexistences. In this study, we established T. truncatus strains with different infection types and then inferred the impact of the two endosymbionts on host reproduction and fitness. Double infection induced cytoplasmic incompatibility, which was demonstrated by reduction in egg hatchability of incompatible crosses. However, doubly infected females produced more eggs relative to other strains. Wolbachia and Spiroplasma did not affect host survival, whereas doubly infected females and males developed faster than other strains. Such reproduction and fitness benefits provided by double infections may be associated with the lower densities of each symbiont, and the quantitative results also confirmed competition between Wolbachia and Spiroplasma in doubly infected females. These symbiont‐conferred beneficial effects maintain stable prevalence of the symbionts and also help drive T. truncatus outbreaks in combination with other environmental factors.  相似文献

1. Maternal adult diet and body size influence the fecundity of a female and possibly the quality and the performance of her offspring via egg size or egg quality. In laboratory experiments, negative effects in the offspring generation have often been obscured by optimal rearing conditions.
2. To estimate these effects in the Yellow Dung Fly, Scathophaga stercoraria , how maternal body size and adult nutritional status affected her fecundity, longevity and egg size were first investigated.
3. Second, it was investigated how female age and adult nutritional experience, mediated through the effects of egg size or egg quality, influenced the performance of offspring at different larval densities.
4. Maternal size was less important than maternal adult feeding in increasing reproductive output. Without food restriction, large females had larger clutch sizes and higher oviposition rates, whereas under food restriction this advantage was reversed in favour of small females.
5. Offspring from mothers reared under nutritional stress experienced reduced fitness in terms of egg mortality and survival to adult emergence. If the offspring from low-quality eggs survived, the transmitted maternal food deficiency only affected adult male body size under stressful larval environments.

It is well known that many plants benefit from growing beside a nurse plant of another species, but the possibility that the nurse also benefits has been rarely studied. We hypothesize that positive interactions are maintained not only because of the recruitment benefits for the facilitated plants but also because of fitness benefits for the nurse plant. We tested this hypothesis by comparing seed production, seed predation and seed viability of a dominant nurse plant species (Mimosa luisana) when growing alone and in patches surrounded by its facilitated species. We also tested whether fitness of the nurse species is dependent on the phylogenetic neighborhood formed by their facilitated species using an analysis that accounted for the abundance and pairwise phylogenetic similitude of all species in each patch. Nurses growing associated to their facilitated species produced more seeds (1.86 times) and these seeds were more viable (1.47 times) than those of nurses growing alone. Seed predation did not alter these fitness differences. Seed number and viability increased in phylogenetically diverse neighborhoods. We conclude that distantly related partners are more likely to cause reciprocal increases in fitness, and that such effects contribute to species coexistence.  相似文献

It is well known that (1) natural selection typically favors an allele with both a large mean fitness and a small variance in fitness; and (2) investors typically prefer a portfolio with both a large mean return and a small variance in returns. In the case of investors, this mean-variance trade-off reflects risk aversion; in the case of evolution, the mathematics is straightforward but the result is harder to intuit. In particular, it is harder to understand where, in the mathematics of natural selection, risk aversion arises. Here I present a result that suggests a simple answer to this question. Although my answer is essentially identical to one offered previously, my path to it differs somewhat from previous approaches. Some may find this new approach easier to intuit.  相似文献

Mating by male Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) was evaluated in the laboratory to assess fitness effects of radio-sterilization applied during different life stages of the malaria vectors An. stephensi Liston and An. gambiae Giles sensu stricto. After reproductive sterilization by gamma-irradiation (120 Gy), equal proportions of sterile and fertile (unirradiated) male adults were released into cages with virgin females and allowed to compete for matings. Radio-sterilization was applied when the males were pupae aged 0-7 h or 24-32 h, or adults aged <24 h or 24-55 h. After being radio-sterilized in the adult stage, males of both species competed effectively with unirradiated males, whereas those sterilized in the pupal stage obtained significantly fewer matings than unirradiated males from the same cohort. There was no evidence of females obtaining multiple inseminations. These findings emphasize the need to radio-sterilize males as adults in order to minimize the fitness cost. Such males may be intended for sterile insect technique population suppression or for trial releases of transgenic anophelines.  相似文献

Components of mating behavior of Drosophila melanogaster mutant and wild-type strains were studied with respect to fitness. The magnitude of the effect of genotype on the male mating activity, female sexual receptivity, fertility and viability was determined. Strong positive correlation was found between the male mating activity and fitness components. It was shown that mating of strains contrasting in sexual behavior features can be accompanied by both heterosis and maternal effect. A survey was conducted of natural populations of the sleepy lizard Tiliqua rugosa in South Australia to determine whether infestation by ectoparasitic ticks reduced their fitness. Between 1982 and 1990, 2183 captures of 824 individual lizards were made in an area where they were infested by the tick Aponomma hydrosauri, and 3668 captures of 586 individual lizards were made in an area where they were infested with the tick Amblyomma limbatum. Lizards with high tick loads in one year tended to have high loads the next year. Longevity of lizards in the study was either not correlated with tick load, or positively correlated. Size achieved was greater amongst lizards with greatest tick load, and lizards in mating pairs had higher tick loads than those never found in pairs. The data do not support the hypothesis that tick load diminishes host fitness.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Adaptation of pathogens to their hosts depends critically on factorsaffecting pathogen reproductive rate. While pathogen reproduction is the end result of an intricate interaction between host and pathogen, the relative contributions of host and pathogen genotype to variation in pathogen life history within the hostare not well understood. Untangling these contributions allows us to identify traits withsufficient genetic variation for selection to act and to identify mechanisms of coevolution between pathogens and their hosts. We investigated the effects of pathogen and host genotype on three life-history components of pathogen fitness; infection efficiency, latent period, and sporulation capacity, in the oat crown rust fungus, Puccinia coronata f.sp. avenae, as it infects oats (Avena sativa). RESULTS: We show that both pathogen and host genotype significantly affect total spore production butdo so through their effects on different life-history stages. Pathogen genotype has the strongest effect on the early stage of infection efficiency, while host genotype most strongly affects the later life-history stages of latent period and sporulation capacity.In addition, host genotype affected the relationship between pathogen density and the later life-history traits oflatent period and sporulation capacity. We did not find evidence of pathogen-by-host genotypic (GxG) interactions. CONCLUSION: Our results illustrate mechanisms by which variation in host populationswill affect the evolution of pathogen lifehistory. Results show that differentpathogen life-history stages have the potential to respond differently to selection by host or pathogen genotypeand suggest mechanisms of antagonistic coevolution. Pathogen populations may adapt tohost genotype through increased infection efficiency while their plant hosts may adapt by limiting the later stages ofpathogen growthand spore production within the host.  相似文献

Summary Any behavior that equally affects a group of organisms cannot be selected by the evolutionary forces operating within that group. The evolution of such behaviors requires a population structure consisting of many groups that vary in their genetic and/or species composition. In this paper we present evidence for the evolution of behaviors with shared consequences in phoretic mites that utilizeNicrophorus beetles (Silphidae) for transport. Eighteen experiments, totalling over 1500 beetle broods, demonstrate that the mites (1) have no negative effects on the beetles at normal densities, (2) occasionally have short-term beneficial effects, (3) appear to have long-term beneficial effects that require a period of time to manifest themselves, and (4) themselves have negative effects at abnormal densities. A survey of other phoretic associations indicates a similar mix of commensalism and mutualism. We conclude that most phoretic associations have evolved to eliminate their own negative effects on the carrier, and also have evolved positive effects when the ecological situation permits.  相似文献

The cell wall of Candida albicans consists of an internal skeletal layer and an external protein coat. This coat has a mosaic-like nature, containing c . 20 different protein species covalently linked to the skeletal layer. Most of them are GPI proteins. Coat proteins vary widely in function. Many of them are involved in the primary interactions between C. albicans and the host and mediate adhesive steps or invasion of host cells. Others are involved in biofilm formation and cell–cell aggregation. They further include iron acquisition proteins, superoxide dismutases, and yapsin-like aspartic proteases. In addition, several covalently linked carbohydrate-active enzymes are present, whose precise functions remain hitherto largely elusive. The expression levels of the genes that encode covalently linked cell wall proteins (CWPs) can vary enormously. They depend on the mode of growth and the combined inputs of several signaling pathways that sense environmental conditions. This is reflected in the unusually long intergenic regions of most of these genes. Finally, the precise location of several covalently linked CWPs is temporally and spatially regulated. We conclude that covalently linked CWPs of C. albicans play a crucial role in fitness and virulence and that their expression is tightly controlled.  相似文献

Premise

Reproductive fitness in plants is often determined by the quantity and quality of pollen transferred by pollinators. However, many fitness studies measure only female fitness or rely on proxies for male fitness. Here we assessed how five bee taxon groups affect male fitness in a prairie plant by quantifying pollen removal, visitation, and siring success using paternity assignments and a unique pollinator visitation experiment.

Methods

In Echinacea angustifolia, we measured per-visit pollen removal for each pollinator taxon and estimated the number of pollen grains needed for successful ovule fertilization. Additionally, we directly measured pollinator influence on siring by allowing only one bee taxon to visit each pollen-donor plant, while open-pollinated plants acted as unrestricted pollen recipients. We genotyped the resulting offspring, assigned paternity, and used aster statistical models to quantify siring success.

Results

Siring success of pollen-donor plants differed among the five pollinator groups. Nongrooming male bees were associated with increased siring success. Bees from all taxa removed most of the flowering head's pollen in one visit. However, coneflower-specialist bee Andrena helianthiformis removed the most pollen per visit. Female fitness and proxy measures of male fitness, such as pollinator visitation and pollen removal, did not align with our direct quantifications of male fitness.

Conclusions

Our results illustrate the need for more studies to directly quantify male fitness, and we caution against using male fitness proxy measures. In addition, conservation efforts that preserve a diverse pollinator community can benefit plants in fragmented landscapes.
