Decision-making is affected by psychological factors like emotional state or cognitive control, which may also vary with circadian rhythmicity. Here, we tested the influence of chronotype (32 morning-type versus 32 evening-type) and time of day (9 a.m. versus 5 p.m.) on interpersonal decision-making as measured by the Ultimatum Game. Participants had to accept or reject different economic offers proposed by a virtual participant. Acceptance involved distribution of gains as proposed, whereas rejection resulted in no gain for either player. The results of the game showed a deviation from rational performance, as participants usually rejected the unfair offers. This behaviour was similar for both chronotype groups, and in both times of day. This result may reflect the robustness of decision-making strategies across standard circadian phases under ecological conditions. Furthermore, morning-types invested more time than evening-types to respond to high-uncertainty offers. This more cautious decision-making style of morning-types fits with our finding of higher proactive control as compared to evening-types when performing the AX-Continuous Performance Task. In line with the literature on personality traits, our results suggest that morning-types behave with more conscientiousness and less risk-taking than evening-type individuals.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Medical students who suffer from poor sleep quality may be afflicted by distress. While the change of chronotype may improve sleep quality, few studies have focused on this association. The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of chronotype on sleep quality in medical students while controlling for confounding covariate factors. A cross-sectional survey on sleep quality was conducted among 5497 medical students. Sleep quality, chronotype, and lifestyle were measured according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Morningness-eveningness Questionnaire and Health-promoting Lifestyle Profile. Hierarchical logistic regression was conducted to analyze the influence of various factors, especially chronotype effect on sleep quality. Our results showed that the total score of sleep quality in evening-types was 5.43 ± 2.66, which was significantly higher than that in morning-types (3.88 ± 2.20, P < .001). Morning-type students (OR = 0.40, 95%CI = 0.29–0.55) and intermediate-type students (OR = 0.53, 95%CI = 0.41–0.69) had a lower risk of poor sleep quality compared to evening-types. The strongest predictor of sleep quality was chronotype while controlling for covariates (grade, gender, father’s educational level, mother’s educational level, internet addiction, mood state, midnight snack frequency, and health-promoting lifestyle profile). Based on the results, we believe that sleep quality among evening-type students may be improved by shifting to keep early hours.  相似文献

The circadian system coordinates internal events in a daily schedule to make sure that the body systems are synchronized to environmental time and internal cues. One important behavioral aspect of the circadian system is the chronotype. It is usually assessed through subjective questionnaires, being the Horne-Ostberg Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) one of the most used. It classifies individuals into three major categories: morning, evening, and intermediate types. Recently, it has been hypothesized the existence of a fourth chronotype, the bimodal type, through an algorithm derived from the MEQ responses. Bimodals answer as morning-types in some questions, and as evening-types in others, resulting in an intermediate total score. To better characterize this phenotype, the present study aimed to detect and characterize the frequency of the bimodal chronotype in the EPISONO, a large population-based cohort, as well as to verify the association between bimodality and sleep parameters and genetic variation in the PER3 gene. Of the 1,042 individuals who participated of the EPISONO, 857 had MEQ filled correctly. We found that 16% of our sample were bimodal types. We observed that bimodal individuals were significantly younger and had lower body mass index. The association between PER3 VNTR genotype and gender with bimodal chronotype was not significant. However, we found an association between bimodality and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (EES) and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). We did not find a statistically significant difference between bimodals and intermediate non-bimodals for the studied variables. Lastly, it was observed that the most significant predictors for bimodal chronotype were female gender, AHI, and EES. In conclusion, the present work provides more evidence that the bimodal type might have to be considered when classifying chronotype and its association with young age and sleepiness may be due to the influence of social and environmental factors.  相似文献

An overwhelming amount of research has indicated that evening-types report more negative psychosocial functioning as well as more negative sleep characteristics (e.g. more sleep problems) relative to morning-types. Researchers also find a strong, consistent link between poor sleep characteristics and negative psychosocial functioning. These studies, however, have been based on a variable-centred approach, and thus were not able to assess possible individual differences within morning-types and evening-types with respect to their sleep characteristics prior to assessing differences in psychosocial functioning. Thus, it is not clear whether it is morningness–eveningness per se or sleep characteristics that explain the differences in psychosocial functioning found between morning-types and evening-types. The purpose of the present two-year longitudinal study was to employ a person-centred approach to determine whether there are subgroups within morning-types and evening-types based on 10-sleep characteristics (e.g. sleep problems and sleep duration). Then subgroups were compared on three indices of psychosocial functioning (i.e. academics, intrapersonal adjustment and alcohol consumption), both concurrently, as well as one year later. Participants were 780 (72.2% female; M?=?19.0 years, SD?=?0.90) emerging adults at a mid-sized university in Southern Ontario, who were either morning-types or evening-types. A latent class analysis (LCA) conducted for morning-types yielded two subgroups, classified as having good sleep characteristics (i.e. morning-good) and poor sleep characteristics (i.e. morning-poor). Results of a second LCA conducted for evening-types yielded three subgroups, classified as having good (i.e. evening-good), moderate (i.e. evening-moderate) and poor (i.e. evening-poor) sleep characteristics. Results comparing subgroups across the 10-sleep characteristics indicated that morning-good and evening-good individuals reported very similar scores, and both were characterized by the least sleep problems and longest sleep duration relative to the other subgroups. In terms of the three psychosocial functioning indices we found that academic achievement generally did not differ across the five subgroups (i.e. morning-good, morning-poor, evening-good, evening-moderate and evening-poor). With respect to intrapersonal adjustment, morning-good and evening-good subgroups reported significantly better intrapersonal adjustment relative to the other subgroups across time. Interestingly, evening-type subgroups generally reported higher alcohol consumption than morning-type subgroups. Overall, these results suggest that intrapersonal adjustment in particular appears to be associated more with differences in sleep characteristics (i.e. sleep problems and duration), than with morningness–eveningness per se, while the opposite is generally true for alcohol consumption. Lifestyle and personality factors likely also play a critical role. Importantly, our study is the first to identify a subgroup of evening-types who report good sleep characteristics and similar levels of intrapersonal adjustment and academic achievement to that of the majority of morning-types.  相似文献

Eighty-nine suicide attempters were included in the study, and systematic information on suicide attempts was recorded. The Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire was applied to determine chronotype, and attempter impulsivity was measured by the total score of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Significant differences between chronotype and impulsivity scores were found. Evening-type subjects reported significantly higher impulsivity scores than both neither- and morning-types. A significant association between chronotype and type of suicide attempt was detected. The largest proportion of violent suicide attempters were evening-type subjects. Violent suicide attempters also reported significantly higher impulsivity scores than nonviolent attempters. Previous studies have pointed out possible relations between eveningness and impulsivity. Current findings suggest that eveningness may be a risk factor for violent suicide attempts by increasing impulsivity.  相似文献

Circadian typology is a latent trait that is usually assessed with scoring on a series of questions thought to represent the construct. But, in the classification, most people fall into the intermediate type, i.e. neither a definite morning nor an evening type, but still showing stronger preference towards either end of the continuum. Our aim was to operationalize chronotype using latent class analysis (LCA) for a 6-item scale derived from the original Horne–Östberg Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire to compare and understand characteristics of chronotype in a population-based sample of adults in Finland. A total of 4904 men and women aged 25–74 years were included. We also analyzed the associations of chronotypes with physical activity (PA) and sitting. We found five latent chronotype groups including “rested more-evening type” (28%), “rested more-morning type” (24%), “morning type” (23%), “tired more-evening type” (17%) and “evening type” (8%) groups. Operationalization of chronotype by LCA suggests that morning alertness is an important feature differentiating chronotypes. Further, the “evening type” and the “tired, more-evening type” had higher odds for none to very low as well as low PA, as compared to “morning type”. In addition, “evening type” was associated with higher odds for more time spent sitting, as compared to “morning type”. Our findings indicate that it is important to assess sleep schedules and morning tiredness, which then could be targeted as a potential mediating factor for health behaviors, in particular, PA and health status.  相似文献

Eveningness preference (late chronotype) was previously associated with different personality dimensions and thinking styles that were linked to creativity, suggesting that evening-type individuals tend to be more creative than the morning-types. Nevertheless, empirical data on the association between chronotype and creative performance is scarce and inconclusive. Moreover, cognitive processes related to creative thinking are influenced by other factors such as sleep and the time of testing. Therefore, our aim was to examine convergent and divergent thinking abilities in late and early chronotypes, taking into consideration the influence of asynchrony (optimal versus nonoptimal testing times) and sleep quality. We analyzed the data of 36 evening-type and 36 morning-type young, healthy adults who completed the Compound Remote Associates (CRAs) as a convergent and the Just suppose subtest of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking as a divergent thinking task within a time interval that did (n = 32) or did not (n = 40) overlap with their individually defined peak times. Chronotype was not directly associated with creative performance, but in case of the convergent thinking task an interaction between chronotype and asynchrony emerged. Late chronotypes who completed the test at subjectively nonoptimal times showed better performance than late chronotypes tested during their “peak” and early chronotypes tested at their peak or off-peak times. Although insomniac symptoms predicted lower scores in the convergent thinking task, the interaction between chronotype and asynchrony was independent of the effects of sleep quality or the general testing time. Divergent thinking was not predicted by chronotype, asynchrony or their interaction. Our findings indicate that asynchrony might have a beneficial influence on convergent thinking, especially in late chronotypes.  相似文献

Recently, a high prevalence of morning-types was reported among trained South African endurance athletes. Proposed explanations for this observation were that either the chronotype of these athletes is better suited to coping with the early-morning start times of endurance events in South Africa; or habitual early waking for training or endurance events may have conditioned the athletes to adapt and become morning-types. The South African endurance athletes also had earlier chronotypes compared to a control population of less active individuals, suggesting that individuals who are more physically active may have earlier chronotypes. However, since both the South African athlete and control groups showed an overrepresentation of morning-types compared to European and American populations, the South African climate may in part have explained this bias towards morningness. Given the latitude and climate differences between South Africa and the Netherlands, and that South African marathons typically start at about 06:30 while those in the Netherlands start later (±11:00), comparison of South African and Dutch marathon runners and active controls would allow for simultaneous assessment of the effects of marathon start time, degree of physical activity and climate on chronotype. Therefore, the primary aims of this study were: (i) to assess the effect of marathon start time on chronotype in marathon runners and (ii) to determine the extent to which either degree of physical activity or climate might explain the bias towards morningness observed in South African athletes and controls. A secondary aim was to determine whether any relationships exist between chronotype, PERIOD3 (PER3) variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism genotype, habitual training habits and marathon performance. Trained male marathon runners from South Africa (n?=?95) and the Netherlands (n?=?90), and active but non-competitive male controls from South Africa (n?=?97) and the Netherlands (n?=?98) completed a questionnaire capturing demographics, training and race history, as well as the Horne–Östberg morningness–eveningness personality questionnaire. All participants donated buccal cell samples from which genomic DNA was extracted and polymerase chain reaction analysis was used to genotype them for the PER3 VNTR polymorphism, which has previously been associated with chronotype. The main finding was that South African runners were significantly more morning-orientated than Dutch runners suggesting that participation in an endurance sport with an earlier start time may influence chronotype. Secondly, both the South African and Dutch runners were significantly more morning-orientated than their respective control groups, indicating that individuals who train for and participate in recreational endurance sport races have an earlier chronotype than physically active but non-competitive males. Thirdly, mean chronotype scores were similar between the South African and Dutch control groups, suggesting that climate does not seem to affect chronotype in these groups. Fourthly, the PER3 VNTR polymorphism distribution was similar between the four groups and was not associated with chronotype, suggesting that the difference in chronotype between the four groups in this study is not explained by the PER3 VNTR genotype. Lastly, in the South African runners group, a higher preference for mornings was associated with a better personal best half-marathon and current marathon performance.  相似文献

Our daily lives are influenced by three different daily timers: the solar clock, our endogenous circadian clock and the societal clock. The way an individual’s endogenous clock synchronises to the solar clock, through either advances or delays relative to sunrise and sunset, results in a phenomenon known as diurnal preference or chronotype. South Africa uses just one time zone, but in the most easterly regions of the country, the sun rises and sets up to an hour earlier than in the most westerly regions throughout the year. It was hypothesised first that South Africans living in the east of the country may have a greater preference for mornings (more morning chronotypes) than those living in the west; and second, that this difference would not be due to genetic differences in the populations, particularly a genetic polymorphism previously shown to influence chronotype. Here, we describe and compare the distribution of chorotype and PERIOD3 variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphism frequency in eastern (n = 129) and western (n = 175) sample populations. Using the Horne–Östberg Morningness, Eveningness Questionnaire we found that there was a significantly higher proportion of morning-types in the eastern population (56.6%) than in the western population (39.4%), and there were higher proportions of neither-types and evening-types in the western population (51.4% and 9.1%, respectively) than in the eastern population (37.2% and 6.2%, respectively) (p = 0.009). There were no significant differences in distribution of the PER3 genotype (p = 0.895) and allele (p = 0.636) frequencies. Although previous studies have shown associations between chronotype and PER3 VNTR genotypes, no significant associations were observed in either the eastern (p = 0.695) or the western (p = 0.630) populations. These findings indicate that, in South African populations, longitude influences chronotype independently of PER3 genotype. The impacts of the differences in chronotype whilst maintaining the same societal temporal organisation in the eastern and western regions were not assessed.  相似文献

The field of mindfulness has seen a proliferation of psychometric measures, characterised by differences in operationalisation and conceptualisation. To illuminate the scope of, and offer insights into, the diversity apparent in the burgeoning literature, two distinct samples were used to examine the similarities, validity, and dimensionality of mindfulness facets and subscales across three independent measures: the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale (PHLMS), and Toronto Mindfulness Scale (TMS). Results revealed problematic associations of FFMQ Observe with the other FFMQ facets and supported a four-factor structure (omitting this facet), while disputing the originally envisaged five-factor model; thus, solidifying a pattern in the literature. Results also confirmed the bidimensional nature of the PHLMS and TMS subscales, respectively. A joint Confirmatory Factor Analysis showed that PHLMS Acceptance could be assimilated within the FFMQ’s four-factor model (as a distinct factor). The study offers a way of understanding interrelationships between the available mindfulness scales, so as to help practitioners and researchers make a more informed choice when conceptualising and operationalising mindfulness.  相似文献

Past research has consistently found that evening-types typically report poorer academic adjustment and higher levels of substance use compared to morning-types. An important development within the morningness–eveningness and psychosocial adjustment literature has been the hypothesis that social jetlag (i.e. the asynchrony between an individual’s “biological” and “social” clocks) is one factor that may explain why evening-types are at a greater risk for negative psychosocial adjustment. Yet, only a handful of studies have assessed social jetlag. Furthermore, the few studies that have assessed social jetlag have done so only with concurrent data, and thus have not been able to determine the direction of effects among morningness–eveningness, social jetlag and psychosocial adjustment. To address this important gap in the literature, the present 3-year longitudinal study employed the use of a cross-lagged auto-regressive model to specifically examine the predictive role of perceived morningness–eveningness and social jetlag on two important indices of psychosocial adjustment among university students: academic adjustment and substance use. We also assessed whether there would be an indirect effect between perceived morningness–eveningness and psychosocial adjustment through social jetlag. Participants were 942 (71.5% female; M?=?19 years, SD?=?0.90) undergraduates at a mid-sized university in Southern Ontario, Canada, who completed a survey at three assessments, each one year apart, beginning in first-year university. Measures were demographics (age, gender and parental education), sleep problems, perceived morningness–eveningness, social jetlag, academic adjustment and substance use. As hypothesized, results of path analyses indicated that a greater perceived eveningness preference significantly predicted higher social jetlag, poorer academic adjustment and higher substance use over time. In contrast, we found no support for social jetlag as a predictor of academic adjustment and substance use, indicating that social jetlag did not explain the link between perceived morningness–eveningness and negative psychosocial adjustment. An important finding was the significant predictive effect of higher substance use on social jetlag over time. Results of the present study highlight the importance of employing a longitudinal framework within which to specifically determine the direction of effects among the study variables in order to validate proposed theoretical models that aim to guide our understanding of how perceived morningness–eveningness, social jetlag, academic adjustment and substance use relate to each other.  相似文献

The inter-individual differences of human time-of-day preferences could divide population into “morning”, “intermediate” and “evening” types. This variety of sleep patterns is accompanied by differences in the timing of peak cognitive performance. The morningness–eveningness trait, also known as chronotype, is distributed on a continuum, with unequivocal early morning and night owl types at the opposite extremes of the distribution while most of the population shows an intermediate or neither type weak sleep pattern. Obviously, the discrepancy between biological and the social clocks has a distinct impact on physiological processes in humans with different chronotype. It is known that natural light regime in circumpolar regions influences human performance. Most work focused on the relationship between academic achievement and chronotype in students from middle latitudes. The primary aim of our study is to investigate the relationship between chronotype and academic achievement in schoolchildren (6th–11th grade) from north-west Russia (Russian Karelia). The Munich chronotype questionnaire was used in the study, and all participants were required to answer a question about their school achievement. Early midpoint of sleep and longer average sleep duration were associated with better grades. Large social jetlag was associated with worse grades. In a linear regression, gender was the most important predictor of grades, followed by midpoint of sleep and age. This is the first study that has been carried out among school pupils from Russian Karelia, and it shows that evening orientation linked with poorer academic grades at this high latitude.  相似文献

Three studies investigated the use of a 5-minute, computer-mediated mindfulness practice in increasing levels of state mindfulness. In Study 1, 54 high school students completed the computer-mediated mindfulness practice in a lab setting and Toronto Mindfulness Scale (TMS) scores were measured before and after the practice. In Study 2 (N = 90) and Study 3 (N = 61), the mindfulness practice was tested with an entirely online sample to test the delivery of the 5-minute mindfulness practice via the internet. In Study 2 and 3, we found a significant increase in TMS scores in the mindful condition, but not in the control condition. These findings highlight the impact of a brief, mindfulness practice for single-session, computer-mediated use to increase mindfulness as a state.  相似文献

Mindfulness has been suggested to be an important protective factor for emotional health. However, this effect might vary with regard to context. This study applied a novel statistical approach, quantile regression, in order to investigate the relation between trait mindfulness and residual depressive symptoms in individuals with a history of recurrent depression, while taking into account symptom severity and number of episodes as contextual factors. Rather than fitting to a single indicator of central tendency, quantile regression allows exploration of relations across the entire range of the response variable. Analysis of self-report data from 274 participants with a history of three or more previous episodes of depression showed that relatively higher levels of mindfulness were associated with relatively lower levels of residual depressive symptoms. This relationship was most pronounced near the upper end of the response distribution and moderated by the number of previous episodes of depression at the higher quantiles. The findings suggest that with lower levels of mindfulness, residual symptoms are less constrained and more likely to be influenced by other factors. Further, the limiting effect of mindfulness on residual symptoms is most salient in those with higher numbers of episodes.  相似文献

Morningness-eveningness, time of day, and physical exercises have been shown to influence mood states. This study aimed to test whether impact of physical exercise on mood depends on time of day and chronotype. Ninety-four participants (age 32 ± 6 years; 34% females; weekly training volume 4 ± 1 hours) filled the Composite Scale of Morningness and reported their current mood using the UWIST Mood Adjective Checklist before and after a 60-min long CrossFit training session which took part in the morning (beginning at 6:30 or 7:45) or in the evening (beginning at 19:30 or 20:45). In this quasi-experiment the measurements were taken by the occasion of the participants’ usual training, in their preferred hours. There were only a few evening-types in the studied sample, while morning and intermediate chronotypes were over-represented. Participation in CrossFit training resulted in mood improvement consisting of increase in energetic arousal (η2 = 0.29) and hedonic tone (η2 = 0.47) and reduction of tense arousal (η2 = 0.14), all significant at p = 0.001. Furthermore, CrossFit training during morning hours boosted mood in the intermediate/evening chronotype group to the levels observed in morning chronotypes (η2 = 0.29, p < 0.05, for the three-way interaction effect). We conclude that participation in intense physical exercise, such as CrossFit training, may allow compensation for the negative effects of non-optimal time of day on experienced moods, particularly in the case of neither/evening-types.  相似文献

Individual sport athletes have been shown to comprise unusually high proportions of morning-types (MTs) coupled with a higher prevalence of the morningness-associated PERIOD3 variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) allele, PER35. The degree to which type of sport selected is influenced by either chronotype or genotype, or the extent to which sporting environment contributes to chronotype is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess chronotype and PER3 VNTR polymorphism frequencies in team sport players and non-athletic controls. South African male Super Rugby players (RUG, n = 120) and a control population of males with habitually low levels of physical activity (defined as exercise no more than twice a week; CON, n = 117) took part in this study. Participants completed the Horne–Östberg morningness–eveningness questionnaire to determine chronotype and donated buccal cell or blood samples from which PER3 VNTR genotype was established. There were more MTs in the RUG (47%) than CON group (23%, p < 0.001), more evening-types in the CON group (18%) compared to the RUG group (3%, p < 0.001), but no differences in PER3 VNTR genotype (p = 0.619) or allele (p = 0.758) frequencies. In both groups, more people carried the PER34 allele (RUG: 63%, CON: 62%). Chronotype was associated with genotype in the CON (p = 0.004) but not the RUG group (p = 0.895). Unlike the individual sport endurance athletes previously studied in whom the PER35 allele predominated, the PER3 VNTR genotype distribution in these team sport players was similar to that of the general population. We hypothesise that the absence of any chronotype–genotype relationship in these rugby players is because their diurnal preference is shifted towards morningness through habitual athletic behaviour.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Chronotype reflects time of day preferences for performing daily activities. Previous research within Asian and European cohorts indicates evening chronotype is associated with elevated cardiometabolic risk. However, evidence is limited from population-based US cohorts, particularly among women in whom evening chronotype prevalence may become higher after middle-age, coinciding with life stages associated with higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. This cross-sectional study evaluated associations of chronotype with overall cardiovascular health (CVH), health behaviors, and cardiometabolic risk factors among 506 women (mean age = 37 ± 16y, 62% racial/ethnic minority) in the American Heart Association (AHA)’s Go Red for Women Strategically-Focused Research Network cohort at Columbia University (New York City, NY, USA). Chronotype was assessed using the validated Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and categorized as “evening”, “intermediate”, and “morning” chronotypes. Health behaviors (diet, physical activity, and sleep) were assessed using validated questionnaires. Anthropometrics, clinical blood pressure, and blood biomarkers were assessed at the clinic visit. CVH was evaluated using the AHA Life’s Simple 7 (LS7) metrics; LS7 scores of 0–8 and 9–14 were considered indicative of poor and moderate-to-high CVH, respectively. Linear and logistic regression models adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, education, health insurance, and menopausal status were used to examine associations of MEQ scores and chronotype categories with overall CVH, clinical cardiometabolic risk factors, and health behaviors. Overall, 13% of women identified as evening chronotypes, while 55% and 32% reported being intermediate and morning types. In linear models, higher MEQ scores were associated with higher AHA LS7 scores (β(SE) = 0.02(0.01); p = .014), indicative of more favorable CVH, and with health behaviors not included in the LS7. Higher MEQ scores were also associated with lower Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, i.e. better sleep quality, (β(SE) = ?0.07(0.02), p < .0001), lower insomnia severity (β(SE) = ?0.14(0.01), p < .0001), shorter time to fall asleep (β(SE) = ?0.28(0.14), p = .044), and less sedentary time (β(SE) = ?0.11(0.03), p = .001). In logistic regression models, evening chronotype, compared to intermediate/morning type, was associated with higher odds of having poor CVH (OR(95%CI):2.41(1.20–4.85)), not meeting AHA diet (OR(95%CI):2.89(1.59–5.23)) and physical activity guidelines (OR(95%CI):1.78(1.03–3.07)), and having short sleep (OR(95%CI):2.15(1.24–3.73)) or insomnia (OR(95%CI):2.69(1.53–4.75)). The evening type compared to morning type was also associated with being a current smoker (OR(95%CI):2.14(1.02–4.52)) and having poor sleep quality (OR(95%CI:2.35(1.27–4.37)) and long sleep onset latency (OR(95%CI:1.89(1.00–3.56)). In our cohort of women, evening chronotype was related to poor CVH, likely driven by its influence on health behaviors. These findings, although warranting confirmation prospectively in other populations, suggest chronotype is an important factor to consider and possibly target when designing lifestyle interventions for CVD prevention.  相似文献

A chronotype is an individual trait that determines circadian rhythm (dark/light cycle) characteristics, associated with bedtime, waking, and other daily activities. A chronotype is classified as morning, intermediate, and evening. The objective is to associate chronotypes with academic performance in university students. A cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate the chronotype of university students (n = 703) by Horne-Ostberg questionnaire and associated with academic performance. The group with higher GPAs had higher chronotype scores (p = 0.002). Morning and intermediate chronotypes exhibited better academic performance; however, more studies are necessary to determine the underlying causes, which could influence cognitive aspects.  相似文献

Previous findings have demonstrated that chronotype (morningness/intermediate/eveningness) is correlated with cognitive functions, that is, people show higher mental performance when they do a test at their preferred time of day. Empirical studies found a relationship between morningness and higher learning achievement at school and university. However, only a few of them controlled for other moderating and mediating variables. In this study, we included chronotype, gender, conscientiousness and test anxiety in a structural equation model (SEM) with grade point average (GPA) as academic achievement outcome. Participants were 158 high school students and results revealed that boys and girls differed in GPA and test anxiety significantly, with girls reporting better grades and higher test anxiety. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between conscientiousness and GPA (r = 0.17) and morningness (r = 0.29), respectively, and a negative correlation between conscientiousness and test anxiety (r = –0.22). The SEM demonstrated that gender was the strongest predictor of academic achievement. Lower test anxiety predicted higher GPA in girls but not in boys. Additionally, chronotype as moderator revealed a significant association between gender and GPA for evening types and intermediate types, while intermediate types showed a significant relationship between test anxiety and GPA. Our results suggest that gender is an essential predictor of academic achievement even stronger than low or absent test anxiety. Future studies are needed to explore how gender and chronotype act together in a longitudinal panel design and how chronotype is mediated by conscientiousness in the prediction of academic achievement.  相似文献
