Microstegium vimineum (Trin.) A. Camus, a shade-tolerant C4 grass, has spread throughout the eastern United States since its introduction in 1919. This species invades disturbed understory habitats along streambanks and surrounding mesic forests, and has become a major pest in areas such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The focus of this study was to characterize the photosynthetic induction responses of M. vimineum, specifically its ability to utilize low light and sunflecks, two factors that may be critical to invasive abilities and survival in the understory. In addition, we were curious about the ability of a grass with the C4 photosynthetic pathway to respond to sunflecks. Plants were grown under 25% and 50% ambient sunlight, and photosynthetic responses to both steady-state and variable light were determined. Plants grown in both 25% and 50% ambient sun became 90% light saturated between 750–850 μmol m−2 s−1; however, plants grown in 50% ambient sun had significantly higher maximum steady-state photosynthetic rates (16.09 ± 1.37 μmol m−2 s−1 vs. 12.71 ± 1.18 μmol m−2 s−1). Both groups of plants induced to 50% of the steady-state rate in 3–5 min, while it took 10–13 min to reach 90% of maximum rates, under both flashing and steady-state light. For both groups of plants, stomatal conductance during induction reached maximum rates in 6–7 min, after which rates decreased slightly. Upon return to low light, rates of induction loss and stomatal closure were very rapid in both groups of plants, but were more rapid in those grown in high light. Rapid induction and the ability to induce under flashing light may enable this species to invade and dominate mesic understory habitats, while rapid induction loss due to stomatal closure may prevent excess water loss when low light constrains photosynthesis. The C4 pathway itself does not appear to present an insurmountable barrier to the ability of this grass species to respond to sunflecks in an understory environment. The functional roles of the contrasting morphologies of sun and shade shoots of the evergreen shrub Heteromeles arbutifolia were investigated in chaparral and understory habitats by applying a three-dimensional plant architecture simulation model, YPLANT. The simulations were shown to accurately predict the measured frequency distribution of photosynthetic photon flux density (PFD) on both the leaves and a horizontal surface in the open, and gave reasonably good agreement for the more complex light environment in the shade. The sun shoot architecture was orthotropic and characterized by steeply inclined (mean = 71o) leaves in a spiral phyllotaxy with short internodes. This architecture resulted in relatively low light absorption efficiencies (E A) for both diffuse and direct PFD, especially during the summer when solar elevation angles were high. Shade shoots were more plagiotropic with longer internodes and a pseudo-distichous phyllotaxis caused by bending of the petioles that positioned the leaves in a nearly horizontal plane (mean = 5o). This shade-shoot architecture resulted in higher E A values for both direct and diffuse PFD as compared to those of the sun shoots. Differences in E A between sun and shade shoots and between summer and winter were related to differences in projection efficiencies as determined by leaf and solar angles, and by differences in self shading resulting from leaf overlap. The leaves exhibited photosynthetic acclimation to the sun and the shade, with the sun leaves having higher photosynthetic capacities per unit area, higher leaf mass per unit area and lower respiration rates per unit area than shade leaves. Despite having 7 times greater available PFD, sun shoots absorbed only 3 times more and had daily carbon gains only double of those of shade shoots. Simulations showed that sun and shade plants performed similarly in the open light environment, but that shade shoots substantially outperformed sun shoots in the shade light environment. The shoot architecture observed in sun plants appears to achieve an efficient compromise between maximizing carbon gain while minimizing the time that the leaf surfaces are exposed to PFDs in excess of those required for light saturation of photosynthesis and therefore potentially photoinhibitory. In three tropical rain forest light environments in Sabah, Malaysia, we compared photosynthesis in seedlings of ten climax tree species with putatively differing shade tolerances. The objectives of the study were (a) to characterise the range of photosynthetic responses in ten species of the Dipterocarpaceae and (b) to elucidate those photosynthetic characteristics that might provide a basis for niche partitioning. Seedlings were acclimated (c. 7 months) in three light environments; understorey, partial shade and a gap (140 m2). The light environments represented a gradation in median diurnal (0630–1830 hours) photon flux density (PFD) ranging from understorey (4.7 μmol m−2 s−1), through partial shade (21.2 μmol m−2 s−1) to gap (113.7 μmol m−2 s−1). Integrated diurnal PFD were in the sequence gap > partial shade > understorey (15.2, 4.7, 1.3 mol m−2 day−1, respectively). In gap-acclimated plants, species differed in the photosynthetic light-response variables apparent quantum yield, dark respiration rate, light compensation point, net saturated leaf assimilation rate (A sat), and in stomatal conductance (g s sat) when assimilation rate (A) was saturated. A light-demanding pioneer species (Macaranga hypoleuca) and a shade-demanding understorey species (Begonia sp.) had, respectively, higher and lower A sat and g s sat than the dipterocarp species. In high-light conditions A sat and g s sat were strongly positively correlated in dipterocarp species. Differing photosynthetic characteristics of gap-acclimated plants suggest that, in these dipterocarp species, different rates of carbon fixation may be an important factor contributing towards niche partitioning. Mean integrated diurnal A (A diurnal) in the gap, partial shade and understory were, respectively, 122.9, 52.7, 20.5 mmol m−2 day−1. Differences occurred in A diurnal of dipterocarp species between light environments. When Macaranga was included, differences in A diurnal were evident in the gap and partial shade, and in both cases were attributed to the pioneer. For the variable A diurnal, there was of a shift in the rank position of Macaranga among light environments, but a shift did not occur among the dipterocarp species. Results from this study are consistent with the idea that rates of carbon fixation per unit leaf area may contribute towards niche differentiation between the climax and single pioneer species, but not within the group of climax species. Other physiological and/or carbon allocation factors may be involved in any niche partitioning; dipterocarp species often have inherently different growth rates and susceptibility to herbivory. As an alternative to niche partitioning, dipterocarp species may co-exist in natural light environments as a result of habitat disequilibrium or purely stochastic processes. Homocontinuous cultures of the unicellular green alga Scenedesmus obliquus were grown under strong (28 W/m2~28,000 lux) and weak (5 W/m2~5000 lux) light conditions to simulate the conditions of ‘sun’ and ‘shade’ plants. As in higher plants the cells adapted to strong light had less chlorophyll but demonstrated a higher photosynthetic capacity and a higher respiration rate, so that their compensation point was reached at three times higher energy than in the cells grown under low light intensities. The CO2 fixation rate and the RuDP carboxylase activity under saturating light intensities were both higher in the cells grown in strong light. In spite of the differences in the pigment content and in the light saturated photosynthetic capacities for both cultures, the quantum yields of photosynthetic oxygen evolution were equal. As documented for some species of higher plants Scenedesmus is not genetically determined to be either a ‘sun’ or ‘shade’ organism but can adapt its photosynthetic apparatus to the different light intensities.  相似文献

Comparative study was performed to assess the content and proportions of photosynthetic pigments and the violaxanthin cycle (VXC) activity in winter-green and summer-green leaves of bugleweed (Ajuga reptans L.) plants grown in shaded (photosynthetically active radiation, PAR 150 μmol/(m2 s)) and sunny (PAR 1200 μmol/(m2 s)) habitats in the Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland). In overwintered and newly formed leaves of shade plants, the content of green and yellow pigments was two times higher than in leaves of sun plants. The shade plants were distinguished by accumulation of β-carotene, while lutein was predominant in leaves of sun plants. Under the action of strong light (2000 μmol/(m2s)), the level of violaxanthin deepoxidation in winter-green leaves of shade and sun plants increased five- to sixfold, whereas it changed insignificantly in summer-green leaves of shade plants. It is concluded that, in a shadetolerant species A. reptans, the photosynthetic apparatus of winter-green leaves in sun and shade plants and of summer-green leaves in sun plants is protected against excess insolation by high activity of VXC. The carotenoids of summer-green leaves in shade plants are supposed to function mainly as light-harvesting pigments.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that the contribution of phosphoribulokinase (PRK) to the control of photosynthesis changes depending on the light environment of the plant, the response of transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) transformed with antisense PRK constructs to irradiance was determined. In plants grown under low irradiance (330 μmol m−2 s−1) steady-state photosynthesis was limited in plants with decreased PRK activity upon exposure to higher irradiance, with a control coefficient of PRK for CO2 assimilation of 0.25 at and above 800 μmol m−2 s−1. The flux control coefficient of PRK for steady-state CO2 assimilation was zero, however, at all irradiances in plant material grown at 800 μmol m−2 s−1 and in plants grown in a glasshouse during mid-summer (alternating shade and sun 300–1600 μmol m−2 s−1). To explain these differences between plants grown under low and high irradiances, Calvin cycle enzyme activities and metabolite content were determined. Activities of PRK and other non-equilibrium Calvin cycle enzymes fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase were twofold higher in plants grown at 800 μmol m−2 s−1 or in the glasshouse than in plants grown at 330 μmol m−2 s−1. Activities of equilibrium enzymes transketolase, aldolase, ribulose-5-phosphate epimerase and isomerase were very similar under all growth irradiances. The flux control coefficient of 0.25 in plants grown at 330 μmol m−2 s−1 can be explained because low ribulose-5-phosphate content in combination with low PRK activity limits the synthesis of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate. This limitation is overcome in high-light-grown plants because of the large relative increase in activities of sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase under these conditions, which facilitates the synthesis of larger amounts of ribulose-5-phosphate. This potential limitation will have maintained evolutionary selection pressure for high concentrations of PRK within the chloroplast. Received: 15 November 1999 / Accepted: 27 January 2000  相似文献

The differences in pigment levels, photosynthetic activity and the chlorophyll fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd (as indicator of photosynthetic rates) of green sun and shade leaves of three broadleaf trees (Platanus acerifolia Willd., Populus alba L., Tilia cordata Mill.) were compared. Sun leaves were characterized by higher levels of total chlorophylls a + b and total carotenoids x + c as well as higher values for the weight ratio chlorophyll (Chl) a/b (sun leaves 3.23–3.45; shade leaves: 2.74–2.81), and lower values for the ratio chlorophylls to carotenoids (a + b)/(x + c) (with 4.44–4.70 in sun leaves and 5.04–5.72 in shade leaves). Sun leaves exhibited higher photosynthetic rates P N on a leaf area basis (mean of 9.1–10.1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1) and Chl basis, which correlated well with the higher values of stomatal conductance G s (range 105–180 mmol m−2 s−1), as compared to shade leaves (G s range 25–77 mmol m−2 s−1; P N: 3.2–3.7 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1). The higher photosynthetic rates could also be detected via imaging the Chl fluorescence decrease ratio R Fd, which possessed higher values in sun leaves (2.8–3.0) as compared to shade leaves (1.4–1.8). In addition, via R Fd images it was shown that the photosynthetic activity of the leaves of all trees exhibits a large heterogeneity across the leaf area, and in general to a higher extent in sun leaves than in shade leaves.  相似文献

Thick sun leaves have a larger construction cost per unit leaf area than thin shade leaves. To re-evaluate the adaptive roles of sun and shade leaves, we compared the photosynthetic benefits relative to the construction cost of the leaves. We drew photosynthetically active radiation (PAR)-response curves using the leaf-mass-based photosynthetic rate to reflect the cost. The dark respiration rates of the sun and shade leaves of mulberry (Morus bombycis Koidzumi) seedlings did not differ significantly. At irradiances below 250 μmol m−2 s−1, the shade leaves tended to have a significantly larger net photosynthetic rate (P N) than the sun leaves. At irradiances above 250 μmol m−2 s−1, the P N did not differ significantly. The curves indicate that plants with thin shade leaves have a larger daily CO2 assimilation rate per construction cost than those with thick sun leaves, even in an open habitat. These results are consistently explained by a simple model of PAR extinction in a leaf. We must target factors other than the effective assimilation when we consider the adaptive roles of thick sun leaves.  相似文献

The photochemical reflectance index (PRI), derived from narrow-band reflectance at 531 and 570 nm, was explored as an indicator of photosynthetic radiation use efficiency for 20 species representing three functional types: annual, deciduous perennial, and evergreen perennial. Across species, top-canopy leaves in full sun at midday exhibited a strong correlation between PRI and ΔF/Fm′, a fluorescence-based index of photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency. PRI was also significantly correlated with both net CO2 uptake and radiation use efficiency measured by gas exchange. When species were examined by functional type, evergreens exhibited significantly reduced midday photosynthetic rates relative to annual and deciduous species. This midday reduction was associated with reduced radiation use efficiency, detectable as reduced net CO2 uptake, PRI, and ΔF/Fm′ values, and increased levels of the photoprotective xanthophyll cycle pigment zeaxanthin. For each functional type, nutrient deficiency led to reductions in both PRI and ΔF/Fm′ relative to fertilized controls. Laboratory experiments exposing leaves to diurnal courses of radiation and simulated midday stomatal closure demonstrated that PRI changed rapidly with both irradiance and leaf physiological state. In these studies, PRI was closely correlated with both ΔF/Fm' and radiation use efficiency determined from gas exchange at all but the lowest light levels. Examination of the difference spectra upon exposure to increasing light levels revealed that the 531 nm Δ reflectance signal was composed of two spectral components. At low irradiance, this signal was dominated by a 545-nm component, which was not closely related to radiation use efficiency. At progressively higher light levels above 100 μmol m−2 s−1, the 531-nm signal was increasingly dominated by a 526-nm component, which was correlated with light use efficiency and with the conversion of the xanthophyll pigment violaxanthin to antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin. Further consideration of the two components composing the 531-nm signal could lead to an index of photosynthetic function applicable over a wide range of illumination. The results of this study support the use of PRI as an interspecific index of photosynthetic radiation use efficiency for leaves and canopies in full sun, but not across wide ranges in illumination from deep shade to full sun. The discovery of a consistent relationship between PRI and photosynthetic radiation use efficiency for top-canopy leaves across species, functional types, and nutrient treatments suggests that relative photosynthetic rates could be derived with the “view from above” provided by remote reflectance measurements if issues of canopy and stand structure can be resolved. Nothofagus nitida (Phil.) Krasser (Nothofagaceae) regenerates under the shade. Nonetheless, older seedlings are commonly found at full sun. We tested the hypothesis that light capture and photochemical and non-photochemical energy dissipation of both photosystems PSI and PSII adjust with ontogeny and brighter environment. Light energy partitioning in both photosystems was studied in seedlings of different developmental stages (small 9.7 cm, tall 36 cm) under contrasting light environments (8–200 and 1,800–2,043 μmol photons m−2 s−1) in the Chilean evergreen temperate forest. Higher A max, dark respiration, and light compensation and saturation points in sun seedlings of both developmental stages were accompanied by higher rates of electron transport. These seedlings also showed a high fraction of open PSII reaction centres and similar non-photochemical quenching at high-light in both photosystems, showing no effect of developmental stage in these parameters. Conversely, light capture, total thermal dissipation after photoinhibition, active down-regulation of antenna efficiency, and state transitions were higher in smaller seedlings than in taller ones. These changes maintain photostasis, preventing photodamage, while favouring a more oxidized quinone pool. There is an independent effect of seedling development and light acclimation on this transition from shade to sun during early ontogeny. This transition reflects short-term responses of the photosynthetic apparatus to light and longer term responses that depend on seedling developmental stage.  相似文献
