We tested whether phylogeny, flower size and/or altitude were significant predictors of interspecific variation in nectar production of hummingbird-visited plants in an assembled database (289 species, in 22 orders, 56 families and 131 genera). Although the study is focused on hummingbird-pollinated plants (241 plant species), plants with different pollinator syndromes (48 species) are also included in the analyses. Nectar volume secreted in a given time period (usually 24 h) by a given flower, its sugar concentration and corolla length were compiled mainly from the literature. Altitude was also obtained from the original references. Sugar production was computed basically as the product of nectar secretion and sugar concentration, and expressed on a per 24-h basis. All nectar traits and corolla length (all log transformed), as well as altitude, showed statistically significant phylogenetic signal. Both nonphylogenetic and phylogenetically informed (independent contrasts) analyses indicated a highly significant positive correlation between corolla length and both nectar volume and sugar production. In addition, altitude (which is partially a surrogate for temperature) was significantly negatively correlated with both sugar concentration and production. Possible reasons for coadaptation of nectar production and sugar production with corolla length are discussed.  相似文献

Most studies assessing the importance of developmental instability of floral characters for pollinator visits and plant fitness have focused on the fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of the corolla phenotype. The importance of stability process for nectar guide characters that signal floral reward has not been considered in the literature. In principle, flowers with symmetrical guides should be more successful at attracting pollinators, therefore increasing their reproductive success in comparison to asymmetrical flowers. In this paper we test this hypothesis in a population of 171 individuals of the Andean monkey flower, Mimulus luteus in northern Chile. This species shows a conspicuous red spot in the landing yellow petal, which permits assessment of the functional relationship between nectar guide FA and female fitness. Our results did not reveal a significant linear nor nonlinear relationship between nectar guide FA and fitness. This result was consistent after controlling the level of FA by guide and corolla size. Because the corolla of M. luteus did not show evidence of UV wavelength reflectance, our negative result could not be attributable to a confounding effect of UV guides. Even though we can not rule out that nectar guide FA correlates better with male than female fitness, the low fraction of the variance in female fitness accounted for nectar guide FA, suggests that other components of the floral phenotype as well as environmental factors may be more important to predict pollinator preference and reproductive success in this species. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Abstract: In this work, we analysed interspecific variation in nectar sugar composition, corolla tube length, and the diversity of floral visitors of 35 Asteraceae species. The potential correlations between these variables could arise either as a result of selection to improve pollinator attractiveness or simply as a consequence of phylogenetic constraints. Samples of nectar and flowers, and data on floral visitors, were obtained from living plants in natural populations from Argentina. Asteraceae species showed a large variability in corolla tube length. Nectar of most species presented a larger proportion of hexoses than sucrose. All species were visited by numerous insects belonging to 2 different orders. Results showed that floral traits are not significantly correlated with the diversity of floral visitors. These characters seem to be linked to the phylogeny of the species. Early branching species (species phylogenetically close to the root of the Asteraceae tree) tend to have longer corollas, higher sucrose proportions and lesser diversity of floral visitors than late branching species. Considering that longer corolla tubes and higher nectar sucrose percentages may indicate some specialization in the pollination system, we suggest that there is an evolutionary tendency toward generalist pollination systems within the family.  相似文献

Background and Aims

While pollinators may in general select for large, morphologically uniform floral phenotypes, drought stress has been proposed as a destabilizing force that may favour small flowers and/or promote floral variation within species.

Methods

The general validity of this concept was checked by surveying a taxonomically diverse array of 38 insect-pollinated Mediterranean species. The interplay between fresh biomass investment, linear size and percentage corolla allocation was studied. Allometric relationships between traits were investigated by reduced major-axis regression, and qualitative correlates of floral variation explored using general linear-model MANOVA.

Key Results

Across species, flowers were perfectly isometrical with regard to corolla allocation (i.e. larger flowers were just scaled-up versions of smaller ones and vice versa). In contrast, linear size and biomass varied allometrically (i.e. there were shape variations, in addition to variations in size). Most floral variables correlated positively and significantly across species, except corolla allocation, which was largely determined by family membership and floral symmetry. On average, species with bilateral flowers allocated more to the corolla than those with radial flowers. Plant life-form was immaterial to all of the studied traits. Flower linear size variation was in general low among conspecifics (coefficients of variation around 10 %), whereas biomass was in general less uniform (e.g. 200–400 mg in Cistus salvifolius). Significant among-population differences were detected for all major quantitative floral traits.

Conclusions

Flower miniaturization can allow an improved use of reproductive resources under prevailingly stressful conditions. The hypothesis that flower size reflects a compromise between pollinator attraction, water requirements and allometric constraints among floral parts is discussed.Key words: Allometry, biomass, corolla, drought, evolution, flower, Mediterranean, sclerophyllous, size, variation, water  相似文献

Flowers exhibit symmetrical patterns, and innate preferences for symmetry in pollinators like honeybees are documented. Most previous studies of symmetry preferences in honeybees, Apis mellifera, tested levels of asymmetry using artificial flowers or stimuli. Here we investigated the effect of flower asymmetry on flower preferences of honeybees in a novel approach using real flowers, incorporating their spectral properties and how the receivers process the visual signals. Importantly, we also tested the response of an ‘eavesdropping’ predator, the crab spider Thomisus spectabilis, that also utilizes the same flower to prey on honeybees. Flowers (Chrysanthemum frutescens) were manipulated to contain asymmetrical and symmetrical patterns, excluding olfactory cues. Both crab spiders and honeybees exhibited a significant preference for symmetrical flowers. Moreover, honeybees exhibited a significant preference for radial symmetry over bilateral symmetry, but no corresponding effect was recorded in crab spiders. Further analyses demonstrated that flower reflectance and orientation of the axis of symmetry did not affect crab spider decisions. Field observations on T. spectabilis revealed that the natural variation in C. frutescens symmetry had no effect on the choice of crab spiders. This indicates that spiders and honeybees may use other flower characteristics, for example, olfactory cues, together with flower symmetry, to make their foraging decisions.

We tested the fertilization efficiency hypothesis, which attempts to explain mean seed size variation among plants within single populations, by comparing the patterns of seed size variation between chasmogamous (CH) flowers and cleistogamous (CL) flowers in Impatiens noli-tangere and Viola grypoceras, respectively. The fertilization efficiency hypothesis predicts that larger plants produce larger seeds if the number of pollen grains captured by a plant increases with increased allocation of resources to its attractive structures (e.g., corolla and nectar), but with diminishing gains. Thus, seed size should depend on plant size in seeds from CH flowers because of the diminishing gains of capturing pollen in these flowers, whereas seed size should not depend on plant size in seeds from CL flowers because CL flowers need not capture outcross pollen. We found significant positive correlations between mean seed size per plant and plant size for seeds from CH flowers in both species. However, there was no significant positive correlation between these two factors for seeds from CL flowers of both species. The results of the present investigations were thus consistent with the fertilization efficiency hypothesis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Different plant organs may show varying degrees of form diversification or conservatism across phylogenetically related taxa. The present study uses data from a recent systematic study of Iberian Papilionoideae to investigate diversification and covariation in reproductive and vegetative plant parts. The appropriateness of imprecise (but comprehensive) taxonomic quantitative information is tested. METHODS: Organ size covariation and phenotypic correlations were studied among tribes, genera and species. Scale relationships were investigated by Reduced Major Axis regression. Variables used were the maximum dimensions of calyx, corolla, keel petal, fruit, seed, stipule, leaflet and petiole. KEY RESULTS: As regards tribe averages, the length of the corolla and that of calyx correlated positively and significantly. In contrast, pod length was unrelated to corolla size and largely tribe-specific. Within genera, the sizes of calyx, corolla and fruit sometimes covaried linearly (e.g. Lathyrus species) and other times did not (Genista, Astragalus). CONCLUSIONS: Information from taxonomic studies can be useful to establish major phenotypic correlations in plants. Results underscore the implications of tribal ownership in the Papilionoideae and illustrate the extensive morphological diversification of pods relative to flowers in this group.  相似文献

Nectar extraction by hummingbirds: response to different floral characters   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary Handling times of hummingbirds (Amazilia rutila and Cynanthus latirostris) visiting artificial flowers were a positive function of corolla length, nectar volume and nectar concentration. Corolla angle had no consistent effects on handling times. A multiple regression model explained 83% of the variation in handling times for these two species. The model also closely fit independent data from another hummingbird, Archilochus colubris, suggesting that it is general enough to apply to other medium-sized, short-billed hummingbird species. When examined across the range of variation normally encountered by hummingbirds in nature, corolla length and nectar volume had the largest effect on nectar extraction rates. At corolla lengths longer than a hummingbird's bill handling time increases markedly. Hummingbirds maximize their net rate of energy intake by selecting flowers with the shortest corolla, the highest nectar concentrations and the highest nectar volume. Since there is a positive relation between bill length and nectar extraction rate, it is surprising that most hummingbirds have relatively short bills.  相似文献

According to their symmetry, flowers are classified as radially symmetrical or bilaterally symmetrical. Bilateral symmetry, which is thought to have evolved from radial symmetry, results from establishment of asymmetry relative to a dorsoventral axis of flowers. Here we consider developmental genetic mechanisms underlying the generation of this asymmetry and how they relate to controls of petal shape and growth in Antirrhinum. Two genes, CYC and DICH, are expressed in dorsal domains of the Antirrhinum flower and determine its overall dorsoventral asymmetry and the asymmetries and shapes of individual floral organs, by influencing regional growth. Another gene, DIV, influences regional asymmetries and shapes in ventral regions of the flower through a quantitative effect on growth. However, DIV is not involved in determining the overall dorsoventral asymmetry of the flower and its effects on regional asymmetries depend on interactions with CYC/DICH. These interactions illustrate how gene activity, symmetry, shape and growth may be related.  相似文献

Floral symmetry and pigmentation are features of flowers that are believed to be associated due to their shared influence on pollinator behaviour. However, the evolution of such associations has so far not been examined. We analysed variation in Rhododendron flowers, in a phylogenetic context, to test whether the evolution of floral symmetry types and pigment patterns are correlated. Variation in floral symmetry due to variation in corolla form, stamen flexion, stamen arrangement, pistil flexion, as well as corolla pigment patterns was documented in 98 species of Rhododendron. Phylogenetic relations among these species were estimated using maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian methods, building on a published molecular dataset of sequences of RNA Polymerase II subunit (RPB2-I). Evolution of the floral traits was studied using phylogenetic correlation tests and ancestral state reconstructions (maximum parsimony, MP and ML methods). Significant correlations were found between corolla pigment pattern and type of floral symmetry at the level of corolla form, stamen flexion or arrangement, and pistil flexion. As expected from their similar roles in enhancing attractability to pollinator, monosymmetric corollas and presence of pigment pattern are correlated; in addition, monosymmetry involving other whorls too shows such a relationship with pigment patterns, and with each other. Multiple evolutionary shifts were detected between monosymmetry and polysymmetry of floral traits in Rhododendron. The relationship between floral monosymmetry attributes and presence of corolla pigment patterns, and additionally, frequent evolutionary shifts in these traits suggest pollinator-mediated selective pressures in Rhododendron.  相似文献

In many ornithophilous Loranthaceae pollination is accompanied by an explosive opening of the flowers, and diverse mechanisms have evolved in different genera to bring this about. These are described for the African genera Erianthemum, Englerina, Tapinanthus, Globimetula, Vanwykia and Plicosepalus. In many genera tensions within the stamens cause the tubular corolla to split along the petal junctions to form window-like fenestrae. The flowers are pollinated mainly by sunbirds which insert their beaks through the fenestrae in search of the abundant nectar. This action causes the tube to split and the stamens to coil inwards explosively. In Globimetula and many species of Tapinanthus pigment is secreted along the edges of the specialized petal segments of the head, the spathulae. Probing along these secretory junctions causes the spathulae to reflex; further probing splits the corolla tube, and allows the stamens to coil inwards explosively. In Globimetula reflexure of the petals exposes the central column of stamens, between which secondary fenestrae are developed. In Plicosepalus curvature of the corolla tube is connected with a more specialized fenestral structure; flower opening is not explosive, and the open flowers continue to be visited regularly by sunbirds. In Vanwykia an early stage in the development of explosive flower-opening is found.  相似文献

Interaction webs, or networks, define how the members of two or more trophic levels interact. However, the traits that mediate network structure have not been widely investigated. Generally, the mechanism that determines plant-pollinator partnerships is thought to involve the matching of a suite of species traits (such as abundance, phenology, morphology) between trophic levels. These traits are often unknown or hard to measure, but may reflect phylogenetic history. We asked whether morphological traits or phylogenetic history were more important in mediating network structure in mutualistic plant-pollinator interaction networks from Western Canada. At the plant species level, sexual system, growth form, and flower symmetry were the most important traits. For example species with radially symmetrical flowers had more connections within their modules (a subset of species that interact more among one another than outside of the module) than species with bilaterally symmetrical flowers. At the pollinator species level, social species had more connections within and among modules. In addition, larger pollinators tended to be more specialized. As traits mediate interactions and have a phylogenetic signal, we found that phylogenetically close species tend to interact with a similar set of species. At the network level, patterns were weak, but we found increasing functional trait and phylogenetic diversity of plants associated with increased weighted nestedness. These results provide evidence that both specific traits and phylogenetic history can contribute to the nature of mutualistic interactions within networks, but they explain less variation between networks.  相似文献

A previous study of Campanula punctata pollinated by Bombus diversus showed greater male reproductive success in plants with wider corollas when male reproductive success was measured by paternity analysis. Pollen removal alone was not a good measure of male reproductive success. The aim of the current study is to elucidate the mechanism underlying the selection on corolla width in C. punctata. Multiple regression analysis of male reproductive success in experimental populations revealed that the advantage of a wide corolla to the male is independent of the corolla width of pollen recipients, indicating that the position of pollen deposited on Bombus may not be an important factor for selection. However, the number of pollen grains that fell on the petal or off the flower and were lost at the first visit of Bombus (pollen fall) decreased with increasing corolla width, so that most pollen grains removed from a wide flower were deposited onto the pollinator. In a narrow flower, a greater proportion of the pollen removed was wasted through pollen fall. Pollen removal does not reflect male reproductive success, at least in part because of the loss of pollen in some flowers through pollen fall. The positive relationship between wider corollas and reduced loss of pollen through pollen fall is likely to lead to greater male reproductive success of wider flowers under repeated visits of pollinators. Decreased pollen fall, probably due to more gentle contact between pollen and bees in flowers with wider corollas, may be one of the mechanisms underlying the selection on corolla width of C. punctata.  相似文献

Abstract The foraging constancy of the solitary bee, Trichocolletes sp., was documented in a semi-arid ecosystem where three morphologically similar legumes co-occur. To quantify the degree of floral similarity among the forage plants, Dillwynia hispida, Dillwynia uncinata and Pultenaea densifolia, discriminant function analysis of petal dimensions and a spectral analysis of corolla colour was undertaken. Petal size varied moderately among species resulting in 2–14% of specimens being misclassified, usually as D. uncinata. Subtle variation in corolla colour in the ultraviolet wavelengths contributed to the distinctiveness of each species. All three species exhibit an UV-absorbing region at the base of the standard petal which contrasts sharply with the rest of the UV-rerlecting petal. Between 450 nm and 470 nm, per cent reflectance drops for D. hispida and P. densifolia, but remains steady for D. uncinata. Above 480 nm, parts of the standard petal in all species reflect similar amounts of light with little variation exhibited among species. Nectar was only offered by D. hispida and D. uncinata, whereas P. densifolia produced an excess of pollen which may serve as a reward. Despite the subtle differences in floral morphology and rewards among these sympatric legumes, Trichocolletes bees only remained faithful to a given species in 43% of 183 interplant flights. Inconstant foraging by Trichocolletes sp. increases the pool of resources because rewards in all three legume species can be obtained in exactly the same manner.  相似文献

The adaptiveness of distyly has been typically investigated in terms of its female function, specifically pollen receipt. However, pollen loads on stigmas can only provide moderate support for Darwin's hypothesis of the promotion of legitimate crosses. To determine the effectiveness of hummingbirds as pollen vectors between floral morphs and the consequences in terms of male (pollen transfer) and female function (pollen receipt) in Palicourea padifolia (Rubiaceae), floral visitors, their foraging modes, and temporal patterns of floral visitation were observed and documented. Differences in pollen and stigma morphology, pollen flow, rates of pollen deposition, and/or stigmatic pollen loads were then evaluated for their contribution toward differences in reproductive output between floral morphs. A pollination experiment with stuffed hummingbirds that varied in bill size was done to evaluate the contribution of bill variation toward differences between floral morphs in pollen receipt and pollen transfer and female reproductive output. Anthers of long-styled flowers contained significantly more and smaller pollen grains than those of short-styled flowers, independently of corolla and anther lengths. The shape and orientation of the stigma lobes differed between morphs and were significantly longer among short-styled flowers. Hummingbird visitation rates did not differ significantly between floral morphs, and foraging movements from focal plants towards neighboring plants were independent of floral morph. Stigmatic pollen loads under field conditions and those after controlled hummingbird visitation, along with rates of pollen accumulation through the day indicated that stigmas of short-styled flowers receive proportionately more legitimate (intermorph) pollen grains than did those of long-styled flowers. However, the species of hummingbird was marginally significant in explaining variation in pollen deposition on stigmas. Lastly, intermorph pollinations of P. padifolia resulted in significant differences in fruit production between floral morphs, independent of pollination treatment and pollinator species; short-styled flowers proportionately developed almost twice the number of fruits developed by long-styled flowers.  相似文献
