Ecological divergence among populations may be strongly influenced by their genetic background. For instance, genetic admixture through introgressive hybridization or hybrid speciation is likely to affect the genetic variation and evolvability of phenotypic traits. We studied geographic variation in two beak dimensions and three other phenotypic traits of the Italian sparrow (Passer italiae), a young hybrid species formed through interbreeding between house sparrows (P. domesticus) and Spanish sparrows (P. hispaniolensis). We found that beak morphology was strongly influenced by precipitation regimes and that it appeared to be the target of divergent selection within Italian sparrows. Interestingly, however, the degree of parental genetic contribution in the hybrid species had no effect on phenotypic beak variation. Moreover, beak height divergence may mediate genetic differentiation between populations, consistent with isolation-by-adaptation within this hybrid species. The study illustrates how hybrid species may be relatively unconstrained by their admixed genetic background, allowing them to adapt rapidly to environmental variation.  相似文献

Invasions and anthropogenic disturbances challenge species with rapid environmental changes. Understanding how organisms respond to these changes is of major concern for the future of biodiversity. The house mouse on a Sub‐Antarctic island (Guillou Island, Kerguelen Archipelago) had to face such challenges twice: first when invading the island two centuries ago; and nowadays when coping with an in‐depth remodeling of its habitat due to a cohort of anthropogenic changes. Morphometric and biomechanical results show that the initial invasion triggered the evolution of a jaw shape adapted to the local food resources. Contemporary changes are also associated to changes in jaw morphology, but are not directly functionally relevant. Here, a complex response integrating feeding behaviour, investment in feeding structure, and degree of mineralization, may provide the mice with a better tool to benefit of wider resources utilization and/or better cope with intra‐specific competition in a changing habitat. These Sub‐Antarctic mice exemplify that success of invasive species rely on the capacity of facing rapidly varying environments through integrated, multi‐faceted responses involving behaviour to morphology through life‐history traits. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 114 , 513–526.  相似文献

小家鼠作为重要的模式生物,近20年来对其遗传与进化领域的研究取得很大进展,通过现代遗传学的各种遗传标记(蛋白质电泳,mtDNA,rDNA,Y染色体等),不仅更深入地探讨了共栖小家鼠间的遗传差异和系统关系以及与野生种的关系;进而还对小家鼠的分类系统进行了修正,提出小家鼠种组(species complex)由domesticus,musculus,castaneus 和bactrianus 4个共栖种以及spicilegus,macedonicus和spretus3个野生种组成;并且进一步阐明了小家鼠的起源和进化问题,目前主要有离心模型和顺序模型2种起源假说,然而对中国小家鼠的遗传分化,亚种分类尚缺乏系统的研究。  相似文献

The parasitoid wasp Spalangia cameroni oviposited a greaterproportion of daughters in stable fly pupae than in house flypupae, even when I controlled for stable flies being smallerthan house flies. Sex ratio manipulation in response to hostquality has been modeled as being adaptive through an effectof host quality on the size and hence offspring production ofdaughters. 5. cameronis response to host species may insteadbe adaptive through an effect on larval survivorship, the developmenttime of daughters, and the size of sons. There was greater survivalof daughters than sons on stable flies. Controlling for hostsize, I found that development time of daughters was about 2%less on stable flies than on house flies. The decrease in developmenttime corresponds to a 2% increase in fitness as estimated byr, the intrinsic rate of increase, and is equivalent to abouta 9% increase in offspring production. Sons were about 2% largerfrom house flies than stable flies, which may increase offspringproduction by up to 3%. Host species had no consistent effecton size of daughters or development time of sons. In additionto the response to host species, mothers oviposited a greaterproportion of daughters in larger stable fly hosts. Whetherthis behavior is adaptive is unclear. Although offspring werelarger when they developed on larger stable flies, the rateof increase was less for daughters dian for sons. Filth fly parasites reared by commercial insectaries were released on two dairies (MO, DG) in southern California to determine their effect on populations of house flies, Musca domestica L., and stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.). Spalangia endius Walker, Muscidifurax raptorellus Kogan and Legner, and Muscidifurax zaraptor Kogan and Legner were released on the MO dairy from 1985 to 1987 in varying quantities. Parasitism by Muscidifurax zaraptor on the MO dairy was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) from the field-collected stable fly (4.4%) and house fly (12.5%) pupae, compared with a control dairy (0.1%, stable fly; 1.3%, house fly). Muscidifurax zaraptor, released from April through October during 1987 on the DG dairy (350,000 per month), was not recovered in a significantly higher proportion from either fly species relative to the corresponding control dairy. No specimens of Muscidifurax raptorellus were recovered from the MO dairy. Parasite treatments had no apparent effect on adult populations of either fly species or on overall parasitism rate of field-collected stable fly (16.8%, MO; 17.2%, DG) and house fly (23.3%, MO; 20.9%, DG) pupae. Spalangia spp. were the predominant parasites recovered from field-collected stable fly and house fly pupae on all four dairies. Sentinel house fly pupae placed in fly-breeding sites on both release dairies were parasitized at a significantly higher rate, as compared with sentinel pupae on control dairies. The generic composition of parasites emerging from sentinel house fly pupae was 20.6% Spalangia spp. and 73.2% Muscidifurax spp., whereas in field-collected house fly pupae, Spalangia spp. and Muscidifurax spp. constituted 74.3 and 19.6% of the parasites, respectively.  相似文献

At the gastroesophageal junction, most vertebrates possess a functional lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which may serve to regulate the passage of liquids and food into the stomach and prevent the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. Snakes seemingly lack an LES and consume meals large enough to extend anteriorly from the stomach into the esophagus thereby providing the opportunity for the reflux of gastric juices. To explore whether snakes experience or can prevent gastric reflux, we examined post-feeding changes of luminal pH of the distal esophagus and stomach, the fine scale luminal pH profile at the gastroesophageal junction, and the morphology of the gastroesophageal junction for the Burmese python (Python molurus), the African brown house snake (Lamprophis fuliginosus), and the diamondback water snake (Nerodia rhombifer). For each species fasted, there was no distension of the gastroesophageal junction and only modest changes in luminal pH from the distal esophagus into the stomach. Feeding resulted in marked distension and changes in tissue morphology of the gastroesophageal junction. Simultaneously, there was a significant decrease in luminal pH of the distal esophagus for pythons and house snakes, and for all three species a steep gradient in luminal pH decreasing across a 3-cm span from the distal edge of the esophagus into the proximal edge of the stomach. The moderate acidification of the distalmost portion of the esophagus for pythons and house snakes suggests that there is some anterior movement of gastric juices across the gastroesophageal junction. Given that this modest reflux of gastric fluid is localized to the most distal region of the esophagus, snakes are apparently able to prevent and protect against acid reflux in the absence of a functional LES.  相似文献

Invasive alien species (IAS) are the major cause of native species extinctions on islands worldwide. To mitigate or eliminate IAS impacts, eradication is often the best alternative. However, IAS removal may result in cascading effects, through increase in prey abundance, mesopredator release, or competitor release. Our objective is to determine which ecological processes may influence the relative abundance of invasive carnivores and rodents on an insular system. We find that feral cat and mustelids relative abundance was strongly related by prey abundance, and for the feral cat, abundance was also controlled by habitat; these results suggest that bottom-up control through environmental filtering could be the mechanism explaining predator abundance. For rodents, we find that the abundance of the black rat was mostly controlled by the abundance of Norway rat and house mice, and food availability; the Norway rat by the abundance of black rat, a house mice and of mustelid predators; and house mouse by the other rodents and food availability. These results suggest that several mechanisms could be concurrently controlling abundance of these species; competition and predation for Norway rat, and competition and bottom-up control by environmental filtering for the other two rodents. While different factors explain the abundance of invasive species within the same functional group, food resource availability is, in general, the main controller of abundance of invasive rodents and carnivores in the Azores. Therefore, IAS management actions in these islands should focus on limiting the access to food resources and shelter, mainly near to human populations.

Urine marking was examined in house mice, deermice, gerbils and hamsters. The frequency of urine deposition varied with the species, and a correlation is suggested between the propensity of males to mark in this fashion and prepuce length and morphology. We postulate an adaptational advantage for a long penis sheath and for a particular configuration of the prepuce; i.e. to act as a wick for the deposition of urinary pheromones.  相似文献

Evolutionary biologists have argued that there should be a positive relationship between sperm size and sperm velocity, and that these traits influence a male''s sperm competitiveness. However, comparative analyses investigating the evolutionary associations between sperm competition risk and sperm morphology have reported inconsistent patterns of association, and in vitro sperm competition experiments have further confused the issue; in some species, males with longer sperm achieve more competitive fertilization, while in other species males with shorter sperm have greater sperm competitiveness. Few investigations have attempted to address this problem. Here, we investigated the relationship between sperm morphology and sperm velocity in house mice (Mus domesticus). We conducted in vitro sperm velocity assays on males from established selection lines, and found that sperm midpiece size was the only phenotypic predictor of sperm swimming velocity.  相似文献

Sperm show a remarkable degree of variation in size, shape and complexity. Murine rodents exhibit a sperm head morphology that differs greatly from the ovoid shape that is characteristic of most mammals. These rodents have sperm that bear one or more apical hooks, the function of which is currently surrounded by much controversy. It has been suggested that the hook serves to facilitate the formation of sperm groups, which in some species exhibit relatively faster velocities than single cells and thus, may provide an advantage when ejaculates are competing for fertilisations. In support of this hypothesis, a comparative study reported a positive association between the strength of sperm competition (estimated from testes size) and the curvature of the sperm hook amongst 37 murine species. Here, we assessed whether sperm competition influences sperm hookedness at the intra-specific level. Following 16 generations of selection, we used geometric morphometry (GM) to describe sperm head morphology in selection lines of house mice evolving with (polygamous) and without (monogamous) sperm competition. Although the GM analysis returned two relative warps that described variation in the curvature of the sperm hook, we found no evidence of divergence between the selection lines. Thus, we can conclude that sperm competition does not influence the degree of sperm hookedness in house mice.  相似文献

Sperm performance is likely to be an important determinant of male reproductive success, especially when females copulate with multiple males. Understanding sperm performance is therefore crucial to fully understand the evolution of male reproductive strategies. In this study, we examined the repeatability of sperm morphology and motility measures over three breeding seasons, and we studied relationships between sperm morphology and function. We conducted this study in wild‐derived captive house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and Spanish sparrows (P. hispaniolensis). Results for the two species were similar. As predicted from results in other passerine species, total sperm length was highly repeatable across ejaculates, and repeatability for the length of other components was moderate. The repeatability of sperm swimming speed across ejaculates was lower, but statistically significant, suggesting that sperm velocity may be a relatively dynamic trait. Surprisingly, swimming speed did not correlate with the relative length of the midpiece, and it correlated negatively with the relative length of the flagellum and with total sperm length. This pattern is the opposite of what theory predicts and differs from what has been found in house sparrows before. Also contrary to previous work, we found no evidence that total sperm length correlates with sperm longevity. These results therefore highlight the need for a better understanding of relationships between sperm morphology and function in passerine birds. J. High levels of anthropogenic noise produced in urban areas are known to negatively affect wildlife. Although most research has been focused on the disturbances of communication systems, chronic noise exposure can also lead to physiological and behavioural changes that have strong consequences for fitness. For instance, behavioural changes mediated by anthropogenic noise (e.g. quality of parental care) may alter development and could influence nestling phenotype. We tested if nestling metabolism was influence by traffic noise in an urban exploiter, the house sparrow Passer domesticus. We experimentally exposed breeding house sparrows from a rural area to a playback of traffic noise and we examined the impacts of this experimental procedure on metabolic rates and morphology of nestlings. We did not find an effect of traffic noise on the morphology of nestlings. Surprisingly, we found that disturbed nestlings had overall lower metabolic rates and mass‐adjusted metabolic rates than undisturbed birds. Our results suggest a specific effect of noise exposure per se, rather than an indirect effect of anthropogenic noise through the quality of parental care. Both the proximate mechanisms and the ultimate consequences of such metabolic changes on nestlings remain unknown and deserve future experimental studies.  相似文献

A cytogenic study of nearly 200 house mice (Mus musculus sensu stneto) and aboriginal mice (Mus hortulanus, Mus abbotti) of the subgenus Mus was carried out. Mice were sampled from most localities in the former U.S.S.R., from the western borders to the Far East, and it was shown that it is possible to use cytogenetic markers to classify the species and rare subspecies of the subgenus. Such markers included the characteristic morphology of the sex chromosomes and the pattern of distribution of the C-heterochromatin in the karyotype. Thus, the aboriginal mice, together with M. spretus , are characterized by a significant reduction in the size of the Y chromosome. In addition, the variant of the X chromosome (so called 'molossinus' lype) previously only observed in Japanese M. in. molossinus was found in all the Mus musculus sampled from the fauna of the former U.S.S.R. Another type, the so called 'domeslicus' is a plesiomorphic variant of the X chromosome which is normally found in M. domestuus. M. hortulanus, M. abbotti and possibly in M. spretus. The presence of the common variant X chromosome in the house mice of the various subspecies in the fauna of the former U.S.S.R., Mongolia (raddei) and Japan (molossinus) provides the basis for the integration of Asian house mice into the one species, At. musculus sensu stricto. The problems of morphology, ecology and systematics of the mouse fauna of the former U.S.S.R. are also discussed with special attention being paid to the studies of the so called 'wagnen' form.  相似文献

The house mouse (Mus musculus), after humans, is the most widespread mammal on earth and one of the worst invasive species for both biological diversity and human health. This ubiquity is the consequence of its strong ecological relationship with humans, namely commensalism. Human activities promote its diffusion by eliminating ecological barriers and by increasing the human environment suitable for this species. This paper deals with recent zooarchaeological data that has helped to decipher the main factors of human evolution involved in the origin of commensal behaviour in the house mouse and in its invasive process throughout the Mediterranean. Understanding this process contributes to our overall knowledge on how human activities modelled mammalian diversity during Holocene. In the Near Eastern core of European Neolithisation, two factors are recognised as the main driving forces to explain the beginning of house mouse commensalism: rise of farming practices (cultivated fields, large scale grain storage, domestication of plants) and human dispersal of domesticated plants through the cultural area of the pre-ceramic Neolithic. These factors increased the attractiveness of the anthropic ecosystem as well as the diffusion vectors of mice by passive transport. Nevertheless, the Neolithisation of the Mediterranean did not promote the house mouse’s invasion of Europe. The commercial and demographic expansions of Phoenicians and Greeks during the last millennium bc were the vectors that allowed the house mouse to overwhelm the ecological barriers that previously prevented its westward invasion of the human environment.  相似文献

The worldwide distributed house mouse, Mus musculus, is subdivided into at least three lineages, Mus musculus musculus, Mus musculus domesticus, and Mus musculus castaneus. The subspecies occur parapatrically in a region considered to be the cradle of the species in Southern Asia (‘central region’), as well as in the rest of the world (‘peripheral region’). The morphological evolution of this species in a phylogeographical context is studied using a landmark‐based approach on mandible morphology of different populations of the three lineages. The morphological variation increases from central to peripheral regions at the population and subspecific levels, confirming a centrifugal sub‐speciation within this species. Furthermore, the outgroup comparison with sister species suggests that M. musculus musculus and populations of all subspecies inhabiting the Iranian plateau have retained a more ancestral mandible morphology, suggesting that this region may represent one of the relevant places of the origin of the species. Mus musculus castaneus, both from central and peripheral regions, is morphologically the most variable and divergent subspecies. Finally, the results obtained in the present study suggest that the independent evolution to commensalism in the three lineages is not accompanied by a convergence detectable on jaw morphology. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 635–647.  相似文献

The house fly, Musca domestica (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), and the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), are two filth flies responsible for significant economic losses in animal production. Although some chemical control products target adults of both species, differences in mouthpart morphology and behavior necessitates distinct modalities for each. For these reasons, larvicides are an attractive means of chemical control. We assessed the potential of the polyol sweeteners erythritol and xylitol as larvicides to the house fly and stable fly. LC50 values of erythritol against 2nd instar larvae were 34.94 mg/g media (house fly) and 22.10 mg/g media (stable fly). For xylitol, LC50 values were 74.91 mg/g media (house fly) and 41.58 mg/g media (stable fly). When given a choice, neither species showed a preference for ovipositing in media treated with either sweetener at various concentrations or in media without sweetener. Significantly lower development from egg to adult was observed when the 2nd instar LC50 equivalent of each sweetener was present in the media compared to controls. Erythritol and xylitol both have larvicidal qualities, however their effective concentrations would necessitate creative product formulation and deployment methods to control all stages of developing flies.  相似文献

Commercially reared parasitoids were released into three high-rise, caged-layer poultry houses; one house received only N. vitripennis Walker, the second house received only M. raptorellus Kogan & Legner, and the third house received an equal ratio of both species. Overall, house fly parasitism by M. raptorellus was never higher than 7% in any house. Most parasitism in the M. raptorellus release house was attributed to N. vitripennis. Parasitism of house fly pupae by M. raptorellus did not significantly increase during or after the 6-wk release period in the house that received both parasitoids. However, a depression in total parasitism was not detected when releases of the two species were made in this house.  相似文献

Expression of house fly cytochrome P-450lpr was examined using immunoblotting in male and female adult LPR house flies, mixed sex adult house flies at 12 different ages, larvae, and pupae. P-450lpr was expressed in both male and female adult house flies. P-4501pr was clearly present in all adult stages examined, was barely detectable in pupae, and could not be detected in larvae. Thus, cytochrome P-450lpr is developmentally regulated and present in both sexes of house fly. Expression of cytochrome P-450, immunologically homologous to house fly cytochrome P-4501pr, was examined in other species using immunoblot analysis. Eleven animal species were tested in the orders Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, Acari, and Rodentia, using microsomes in some species from both induced and noninduced animals or insecticide-resistant and susceptible strains. P-450lpr appears to be restricted to house flies, as none of these species contained cytochrome P-450 that reacted with antiserum to cytochrome P-450lpr.  相似文献
