Complexity (or its opposite, regularity) of heart period variability has been related to age and disease but never linked to a progressive shift of the sympathovagal balance. We compare several well established estimates of complexity of heart period variability based on entropy rates [i.e., approximate entropy (ApEn), sample entropy (SampEn), and correct conditional entropy (CCE)] during an experimental protocol known to produce a gradual shift of the sympathovagal balance toward sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal (i.e., the graded head-up tilt test). Complexity analysis was carried out in 17 healthy subjects over short heart period variability series ( approximately 250 cardiac beats) derived from ECG recordings during head-up tilt with table inclination randomly chosen inside the set {0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90}. We found that 1) ApEn does not change significantly during the protocol; 2) all indices measuring complexity based on entropy rates, including ad hoc corrections of the bias arising from their evaluation over short data sequences (i.e., corrected ApEn, SampEn, CCE), evidence a progressive decrease of complexity as a function of the tilt table inclination, thus indicating that complexity is under control of the autonomic nervous system; 3) corrected ApEn, SampEn, and CCE provide global indices that can be helpful to monitor sympathovagal balance.  相似文献

We investigated the associations between heart rate variability (HRV) parameters and some housing- and individual-related variables using the canonical correspondence analysis (CCOA) method in lactating Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. We collected a total of 5200 5-min interbeat interval (IBI) samples from 260 animals on five commercial dairy farms [smaller-scale farms with 70 (Farm 1, n = 50) and 80 cows per farm (Farm 2, n = 40), and larger-scale farms with 850 (Farm 3, n = 66), 1900 (Farm 4, n = 60) and 1200 (Farm 5, n = 45) cows. Dependent variables included HRV parameters, which reflect the activity of the autonomic nervous system: heart rate (HR), the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) in IBIs, the standard deviation 1 (SD1), the high frequency (HF) component of HRV and the ratio between the low frequency (LF) and the HF parameter (LF/HF). Explanatory variables were group size, space allowance, milking frequency, parity, daily milk yield, body condition score, locomotion score, farm, season and physical activity (lying, lying and rumination, standing, standing and rumination and feeding). Physical activity involved in standing, feeding and in rumination was associated with HRV parameters, indicating a decreasing sympathetic and an increasing vagal tone in the following order: feeding, standing, standing and rumination, lying and rumination, lying. Objects representing summer positioned close to HR and LF and far from SD1, RMSSD and HF indicate a higher sympathetic and a lower vagal activity. Objects representing autumn, spring and winter associated with increasing vagal activity, in this order. Time-domain measures of HRV were associated with most of the housing- and individual-related explanatory variables. Higher HR and lower RMSSD and SD1 were associated with higher group size, milking frequency, parity and milk yield, and low space allowance. Higher parity and milk yield were associated with higher sympathetic activity as well (higher LF/HF), while individuals with lower locomotion scores (lower degree of lameness) were characterized with a higher sympathetic and a lower vagal tone (higher HR and LF/HF and lower RMSSD and SD1). Our findings indicate that the CCOA method is useful in demonstrating associations between HRV and selected explanatory variables. We consider physical activity, space allowance, group size, milking frequency, parity, daily milk yield, locomotion score and season to be the most important variables in further HRV studies on dairy cows.  相似文献

To investigate heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with masked hypertension (MH), participants were classified based on clinic and 24-h ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring: essential hypertension (EH, n = 40; MH, n = 36) and normotension (NT, n = 48). The HRV parameters were observed using a 24-h Holter monitor. Compared with NT controls, the parameters of HRV (SDNN, SDANN, SDNN Index, RMSSD, HF) and parameters in EH and MH patients had significantly decreased. No statistically significant difference in the HRV parameters was found between the EH and MH groups. The changes in HRV parameters show cardiac autonomic nerve dysfunction in patients with MH.  相似文献

Objective: Heart rate variability provides non‐invasive information about cardiac parasympathetic activity (PSA). We determined in obese children: (1) relations of baseline PSA to body composition and hemodynamics; (2) effects of physical training (PT) and cessation of PT; and (3) which factors explained individual differences in responsivity of PSA to the PT. Research Methods and Procedures: The root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) was the index of PSA. Obese children (n = 79) were randomly assigned to groups that participated in PT during the first or second 4‐month periods of the study. Results: Baseline RMSSD was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with lower levels of: fat mass, fat‐free mass, subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue, resting heart rate (HR), resting systolic blood pressure, and exercise HR. Stepwise multiple regression produced a final model (R2 = 0.36) that included only resting HR. The analysis of changes over the three time points of the study found a significant (p = 0.026) time by group interaction, such that RMSSD increased during periods of PT and decreased following cessation of PT. Greater individual increases in response to the PT (p < 0.05) were seen in those who had lower pre‐PT RMSSD levels, showed the greatest decreases in resting HR, and increased most in vigorous physical activity. The final regression model retained only the change in resting HR as a significant predictor of the changes in the RMSSD (R2 = 0.23). Discussion: Regular exercise that improved fitness and body composition had a favorable effect on PSA in obese children.  相似文献

Heart rate monitoring was used to measure heart rate variability (HRV) at thermoneutral conditions (Ta 24 °C) in healthy women resting in supine position before and after acute and after repeated (3 times a week during a 3-month period) whole-body cryotherapies (WBC), at −110 °C. The observed acute cooling-related increase in high frequency power (HFP) of RR-intervals indicates an increase in cardiac parasympathetic modulation. After 3 months of repeated WBC the increase in parasympathetic tone was attenuated, which may be interpreted as an adaptation of autonomic function. The repeated WBC exposures-related increase in resting low frequency power (LFP) of RR-intervals during the 3 months resembles the response observed related to exercise training.  相似文献

The study investigated the heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) before, during, and after stretching exercises performed by subjects with low flexibility levels. Ten men (age: 23 ± 2 years; weight: 82 ± 13 kg; height: 177 ± 5 cm; sit-and-reach: 23 ± 4 cm) had the HR and HRV assessed during 30 minutes at rest, during 3 stretching exercises for the trunk and hamstrings (3 sets of 30 seconds at maximum range of motion), and after 30 minutes postexercise. The HRV was analyzed in the time ('SD of normal NN intervals' [SDNN], 'root mean of the squared sum of successive differences' [RMSSD], 'number of pairs of adjacent RR intervals differing by >50 milliseconds divided by the total of all RR intervals' [PNN50]) and frequency domains ('low-frequency component' [LF], 'high-frequency component' [HF], LF/HF ratio). The HR and SDNN increased during exercise (p < 0.03) and decreased in the postexercise period (p = 0.02). The RMSSD decreased during stretching (p = 0.03) and increased along recovery (p = 0.03). At the end of recovery, HR was lower (p = 0.01), SDNN was higher (p = 0.02), and PNN50 was similar (p = 0.42) to pre-exercise values. The LF increased (p = 0.02) and HF decreased (p = 0.01) while stretching, but after recovery, their values were similar to pre-exercise (p = 0.09 and p = 0.3, respectively). The LF/HF ratio increased during exercise (p = 0.02) and declined during recovery (p = 0.02), albeit remaining higher than at rest (p = 0.03). In conclusion, the parasympathetic activity rapidly increased after stretching, whereas the sympathetic activity increased during exercise and had a slower postexercise reduction. Stretching sessions including multiple exercises and sets acutely changed the sympathovagal balance in subjects with low flexibility, especially enhancing the postexercise vagal modulation.  相似文献

To study the age-related features of heart rate variability in children between the age of 6 to 16 years, cardiac rhythmograms of 5400 children were analyzed. It was found that parameters of the heart rate (M, SDNN, RMSSD, TF, VLF, and HF) in these children increase with age, changing in a wavelike way from year to year. Gender differences were observed in parameter M beginning from the age of 9; in parameters TF, VLF, and LF, the differences were observed beginning from the age of 11; and in parameters SDNN, RMSSD, and HF, the differences were observed from the age of 12 years. No differences between 16-year-old boys and girls in all the parameters of heart rate variability were found. It was shown that parameter VLF derived from ECG epochs of less than 5-min is suitable for physiological and clinical assessment. The obtained values of the parameters can be used in practice as reference standard.  相似文献

Domestic chicken lines of the White Leghorn type differing in their level of feather pecking were developed by divergent genetic selection specifically on feather pecking behavior. We determined parameters of heart rate variability to elucidate the relative activation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems during rest and stressful situations. A total of 48 hens were tested in 8 batches. Segments of 2 min were extracted from electrocardiograms recorded by radio-transmitter implants, before (basal undisturbed conditions) and during physical restraint and a social test. Under basal conditions mean distance between R-waves were shorter in the low and high lines compared to the control. During physical restraint, stress reactions [reduced root of the mean squares of successive differences (RMSSD), reduced high frequency (HF), high low frequency (LF/HF) and low vagal-sympathetic effect (VSE) compared to basal levels] were significant in all lines. During the physical restraint the high feather pecking (HFP) line reacted significantly stronger than control (CON) and low feather pecking (LFP) line. During social test the LFP line reacted different than the other two lines. Seemingly birds from LFP conceived the social test as less stressful than birds from the CON and HFP lines. From this it follows that (1) physical restraint generally induced higher stress reactions than the social test and (2) genetic selection for higher levels of feather pecking increased the autonomic nervous system reaction to physical restraint whereas selection against feather pecking has reduced the response to increased social contact.

Different season trainings may influence autonomic and non-autonomic cardiac control of heart rate and provokes specific adaptations on heart’s structure in athletes. We investigated the influence of transition training (TT) and competitive training (CT) on resting heart rate, its mechanisms of control, spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and relationships between heart rate mechanisms and cardiac structure in professional cyclists (N = 10). Heart rate (ECG) and arterial blood pressure (Pulse Tonometry) were recorded continuously. Autonomic blockade was performed (atropine—0.04 mg.kg-1; esmolol—500 μg.kg-1 = 0.5 mg). Vagal effect, intrinsic heart rate, parasympathetic (n) and sympathetic (m) modulations, autonomic influence, autonomic balance and BRS were calculated. Plasma norepinephrine (high-pressure liquid chromatography) and cardiac structure (echocardiography) were evaluated. Resting heart rate was similar in TT and CT. However, vagal effect, intrinsic heart rate, autonomic influence and parasympathetic modulation (higher n value) decreased in CT (P≤0.05). Sympathetic modulation was similar in both trainings. The autonomic balance increased in CT but still showed parasympathetic predominance. Cardiac diameter, septum and posterior wall thickness and left ventricular mass also increased in CT (P<0.05) as well as diastolic function. We observed an inverse correlation between left ventricular diastolic diameter, septum and posterior wall thickness and left ventricular mass with intrinsic heart rate. Blood pressure and BRS were similar in both trainings. Intrinsic heart rate mechanism is predominant over vagal effect during CT, despite similar resting heart rate. Preserved blood pressure levels and BRS during CT are probably due to similar sympathetic modulation in both trainings.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was 1) to investigate whether an increase in heart rate (HR) at the onset of voluntary static arm exercise in tetraplegic subjects was similar to that of normal subjects and 2) to identify how the cardiovascular adaptation during static exercise was disturbed by sympathetic decentralization. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and HR were noninvasively recorded during static arm exercise at 35% of maximal voluntary contraction in six tetraplegic subjects who had complete cervical spinal cord injury (C(6)-C(7)). Stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), and total peripheral resistance (TPR) were estimated by using a Modelflow method simulating aortic input impedance from arterial blood pressure waveform. In tetraplegic subjects, the increase in HR at the onset of static exercise was blunted compared with age-matched control subjects, whereas the peak increase in HR at the end of exercise was similar between the two groups. CO increased during exercise with no or slight decrease in SV. MAP increased approximately one-third above the control pressor response but TPR did not rise at all throughout static exercise, indicating that the slight pressor response is determined by the increase in CO. We conclude that the cardiovascular adaptation during voluntary static arm exercise in tetraplegic subjects is mainly accomplished by increasing cardiac pump output according to the tachycardia, which is controlled by cardiac vagal outflow, and that sympathetic decentralization causes both absent peripheral vasoconstriction and a decreased capacity to increase HR, especially at the onset of exercise.  相似文献

This study examines the acute effect of heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback on HRV measures during and immediately after biofeedback and during the following laboratory-induced stress. Eighteen healthy males exposed to work-related stress were randomised into an HRV biofeedback group (BIO) or a comparative group (COM). Subjects completed a modified Stroop task before (Stroop 1) and after (Stroop 2) the intervention. Both groups had similar physiological responses to stress in Stroop 1. In Stroop 2, the COM group responded similarly to the way they did to Stroop 1: respiratory frequency (RF) and heart rate (HR) increased, RMSSD and high frequency (HF) power decreased or had a tendency to decrease, while low frequency (LF) power showed no change. The BIO group responded differently in Stroop 2: while RF increased and LF power decreased, HR, RMSSD and HF power showed no change. In the BIO group, RMSSD was higher in Stroop 2 compared to Stroop 1. In conclusion, HRV biofeedback induced a short term carry-over effect during both the following rest period and laboratory-induced stress suggesting maintained HF vagal modulation in the BIO group after the intervention, and maintained LF vagal modulation in the COM group.  相似文献

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been widely used as a measure of vagal activation in physiological, psychological, and clinical examinations. We studied the within-subject quantitative relationship between HRV and vagal effects on the heart in different body postures during a gradually decreasing vagal blockade. Electrocardiogram and respiratory frequency were measured in subjects (8 endurance athletes and 10 participants of nonendurance sports) in supine, sitting, and standing postures before the blockade, under vagal blockade (atropine sulfate, 0.04 mg/kg), and four times during a 150-min recovery from the blockade. Fast Fourier transform was used to calculate low-frequency power (LFP, 0.04-0.15 Hz), high-frequency power (HFP, 0.15-0.40 Hz), and total power (TP, 0.04-0.40 Hz). A within-subject linear regression analysis of recovery time on each HRV index was conducted. Complete vagal blockade decreased all HRV significantly, particularly HFP (P < 0.001). A linear fit explained a large portion of the within-subject variance between recovery time and natural log-transformed (ln) HRV indexes in every posture, with coefficients of determination (R2) in the supine posture [means (SD)]: 98 (SD 2)% for mean R-R interval, 87 (SD 10)% for lnLFP, 87 (SD 13)% for lnHFP, and 91 (SD 10)% for lnTP. Neither body posture nor endurance-training background had an impact on R2 values. There was marked between-subject variation in the R2 values, slopes, and intercepts. In conclusion, all HRV, particularly HFP, is predominantly under vagal control. Within subjects, lnLFP, lnHFP, and lnTP increased linearly with the gradually decreasing vagal blockade in all postures.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of autonomic modulation before, during and after the Modified Wingate Test (WanMT), through the analysis of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Six volunteers between the ages of 40 and 70, post-revascularization procedures (angioplasty and/or surgery, mean duration 10 months), were submitted to supervised training for at least 10 to 14 months. The following protocol, divided into 5 phases, was used: 1) Rest Phase (RP): 180 seconds; 2) Submaximum Phase (SP): 30 seconds; 3) Maximum Phase (MP): 30 seconds; 4) Active Recuperation Phase (ARP); 120 seconds and; 5) Passive Recuperation Phase (PRP): 180 seconds. For the WanMT Test, we selected the load of 3.75% of corporal weight for all volunteers. To analyze the HRV, we used the following parameters: the interval RRr, MNN, SDNN, RMSSD and PNN50. We only observed results for the group according to RMSSD parameters during the rest phase of the test protocol in which the group remained in vagal presence and during all other phases in vagal depression. However, when we analyzed the PNN50, we observed that the group was in medium vagal presence during all of the phases of the test though there was no statistically significant difference (p> 0.05) between the phases. Therefore, we can say that all of the individuals had a similar profile in the autonomic response to the WanMT, confirmed by the parameters studied in the analysis of the HRV in the time domain.  相似文献

From the 1990s, extensive research was started on the physiological aspects of individual traits in animals. Previous research has established two extreme (proactive and reactive) coping styles in several animal species, but the means of reactivity with the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity has not yet been investigated in cattle. The aim of this study was the characterization of cardiac autonomic activity under different conditions in cows with different individual characteristics. For this purpose, we investigated heart rate and ANS-related heart rate variability (HRV) parameters of dairy cows (N = 282) on smaller- and larger-scale farms grouped by (1) temperament and (2) behavioural reactivity to humans (BRH). Animals with high BRH scores were defined as impulsive, while animals with low BRH scores were defined as reserved. Cardiac parameters were calculated for undisturbed lying (baseline) and for milking bouts, the latter with the presence of an unfamiliar person (stressful situation). Sympathetic tone was higher, while vagal activity was lower in temperamental cows than in calm animals during rest both on smaller- and larger-scale farms. During milking, HRV parameters were indicative of a higher sympathetic and a lower vagal activity of temperamental cows as compared to calm ones in farms of both sizes. Basal heart rate did not differ between BRH groups either on smaller- or larger-scale farms. Differences between basal ANS activity of impulsive and reserved cows reflected a higher resting vagal and lower sympathetic activity of reserved animals compared to impulsive ones both on smaller- and larger-scale farms. There was no difference either in heart rate or in HRV parameters between groups during milking neither in smaller- nor in larger-scale farms. These two groupings allowed to draw possible parallels between personality and cardiac autonomic activity during both rest and milking in dairy cows. Heart rate and HRV seem to be useful for characterisation of physiological differences related to temperament and BRH.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine heart rate recovery (HRR) and linear/nonlinear heart rate variability (HRV) before and after resistance training. Fourteen young men (25.0 +/- 1.1 yr of age) completed a crossover design consisting of a 4-wk time-control period, 6 wk of resistance training (3 days/wk), and 4 wk of detraining. Linear HRV was spectrally decomposed using an autoregressive approach. Nonlinear dynamics of heart rate complexity included sample entropy (SampEn) and Lempel-Ziv entropy (LZEn). HRR was calculated from a graded maximal exercise test as maximal heart rate attained during the test minus heart rate at 1 min after exercise (HRR). There was no change in SampEn, LZEn, or HRR after the time-control portion of the study (P > 0.05). SampEn (P < 0.05), LZEn (P < 0.05), and HRR (P < 0.05) increased after resistance training and returned to pretraining values after detraining. There was no change in spectral measures of HRV at any time point (P > 0.05). These findings suggest that resistance exercise training increases heart rate complexity and HRR after exercise but has no effect on spectral measures of HRV in young healthy men. These autonomic changes regress shortly after cessation of training.  相似文献

Conventional spectral analyses of heart rate variability (HRV) have been limited to stationary signals and have not allowed the obtainment of information during transient autonomic cardiac responses. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method to detect transient changes in vagal effects on the heart. We derived high-frequency power (HFP, 0.20-0.40 Hz) as a function of time during active orthostatic task (AOT) from the sitting to standing posture before and after selective vagal (atropine sulfate 0.04 mg/kg) and sympathetic (metoprolol 0.20 mg/kg) blockades. The HFP minimum point during the first 30 s after standing up was calculated and compared with sitting and standing values. Reactivity scores describing the fast and slow HFP responses to AOT were calculated by subtracting the minimum and standing values from the sitting value, respectively. The present results, obtained without controlled respiration, showed that in the drug-free condition, HFP decreased immediately after standing up (P < 0.001) and then gradually increased toward the level characteristic for the standing posture (P < 0.001), remaining lower than in the sitting baseline posture (P < 0.001). The magnitudes of the fast and slow HFP responses to AOT were abolished by the vagal blockade (P < 0.001) and unaffected by the sympathetic blockade. These findings indicate that HFP derived by the STFT method provided a tool for monitoring the magnitude and time course of transient changes in vagal effects on the heart without the need to interfere with normal control by using blocking drugs.  相似文献

Caucasian populations have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) when compared with their Chinese counterparts and CVD is associated with autonomic function. It is unknown whether autonomic function during exercise recovery differs between Caucasians and Chinese. The present study investigated autonomic recovery following an acute bout of treadmill exercise in healthy Caucasians and Chinese. Sixty-two participants (30 Caucasian and 32 Chinese, 50% male) performed an acute bout of treadmill exercise at 70% of heart rate reserve. Heart rate variability (HRV) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) were obtained during 5-min epochs at pre-exercise, 30-min, and 60-min post-exercise. HRV was assessed using frequency [natural logarithm of high (LnHF) and low frequency (LnLF) powers, normalized high (nHF) and low frequency (nLF) powers, and LF/HF ratio] and time domains [Root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), natural logarithm of RMSSD (LnRMSSD) and R–R interval (RRI)]. Spontaneous BRS included both up-up and down-down sequences. At pre-exercise, no group differences were observed for any HR, HRV and BRS parameters. During exercise recovery, significant race-by-time interactions were observed for LnHF, nHF, nLF, LF/HF, LnRMSSD, RRI, HR, and BRS (up-up). The declines in LnHF, nHF, RMSSD, RRI and BRS (up-up) and the increases in LF/HF, nLF and HR were blunted in Chinese when compared to Caucasians from pre-exercise to 30-min to 60-min post-exercise. Chinese exhibited delayed autonomic recovery following an acute bout of treadmill exercise. This delayed autonomic recovery may result from greater sympathetic dominance and extended vagal withdrawal in Chinese.Trial Registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Register ChiCTR-IPR-15006684  相似文献

tk;1Passive head-up tilt and exercise result in specific changes in the spectral characteristics of heart rate (HR) variability as a result of reduced vagal and enhanced sympathetic outflow. Recently analytic methods based on nonlinear system theory have been developed to characterize the nonlinear features in HR dynamics. This study was designed to assess the changes in the fractal and complexity measures of HR behavior during the passive head-up tilt and during exercise. Fractal exponent (alpha(1)) and approximate entropy (ApEn), measures of short-term correlation properties and overall complexity of HR, respectively, along with spectral components of HR variability were analyzed during a passive head-up tilt test (n = 10) and a low-intensity steady-state exercise (n = 20) in healthy subjects. We observed that alpha(1) increased during the tilt test (from 0.85 +/- 0.22 to 1.48 +/- 0.20; P < 0.001) and during the exercise (from 1.00 +/- 0.22 to 1.37 +/- 0. 14; P < 0.001). ApEn also increased during the exercise (from 1.04 +/- 0.11 to 1. 11 +/- 0.08; P < 0.05), but it did not change during the tilt test. The normalized high-frequency spectral component decreased and the low-frequency component increased similarly during both the exercise and the tilt test (P < 0.001 for all). Exercise and passive tilt result in an increase of short-term fractal correlation properties of HR dynamics, which is related to changes in the balance between the low- and high-frequency oscillations in controlled situations. Overall complexity of HR dynamics increases during exercise but not during passive tilt.  相似文献
