To determine the process of regulation of Unaspis yanonensis (Kuwana) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) by the two introduced parasitoids, Aphytis yanonensis DeBach et Rosen and Coccobius fulvus (Compere et Annecke) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), the temporal changes in the population density of U. yanonensis as well as the parasitism rates were monitored for eight years before and after the release of the two parasitoids in a Satsuma mandarin orange (Citrus unshiu Marc. (Rutaceae)) orchard. From 2–4 years after the release, the parasitism rate by C. fulvus gradually increased, eventually reaching 70%, while that by A. yanonensis showed a weak increase, remaining under 12%. During this period, the host density decreased to about 1/100 of the initial density. After the drastic decrease, the host density remained under 1/60 of the level previous to the release for at least 2 years with the populations of both parasitoids persisting. To estimate the ability of the two parasitoids to regulate the populations of U. yanonensis, life tables of U. yanonensis under natural conditions and predator/parasitoid-exclusion (bagged) conditions were compared. It was demonstrated that C. fulvus and A. yanonensis impose about 70% mortality rate on the host at mature adult stages and about 30% on the host at immature adult stages. The results have strongly confirmed the high capability of the two parasitoids as biological control agents for U. yanonensis, which was suggested by earlier studies. However, contrary to those studies, the present study did not support the complementarity of the two parasitoids in regulating the host population, suggesting that the effectiveness of C. fulvus alone in regulating the host population at low levels.  相似文献

Abstract Parasitoids are thought to exert immense selection pressures that shape the traits of herbivores. We examined whether two species of parasitoid wasps, Aphytis yanonensis DeBach et Rosen and Coccobius fulvus Compere et Annecke (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), affect the settling behavior of the arrowhead scale Unaspis yanonensis Kuwana (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), in order to demonstrate the evolution of antiparasitism behavior of herbivores using parasitoids in the field. We used the following five methods: a comparison of parasitism risk in different settling behaviors‐parasitoid introduction into a parasitoid‐free population; a comparison of the settling behavior between parasitoid‐present and parasitoid‐free populations; a common garden experiment, in which scales were transferred from parasitoid‐present and parasitoid‐free populations into the same garden; and a laboratory observation of the settling behavior of the first instars derived from the two population categories. Both parasitoids were introduced into a parasitoid‐free population in Wakayama in 1987, and the settling mode of the scales was examined in 1987, 1994, and 1995. The introduction of parasitoids modified the scale‐settling mode so that more crawlers settled under another scale (called burrowing), which was consistent with the results observed in parasitoid‐present (including South China) and parasitoid‐free populations. Moreover, only the burrowing scale exhibited a lower parasitism rate compared to scales settling singly and being burrowed. The common garden experiment demonstrated that scales introduced from the parasitoid‐present population had a greater proportion of burrowers than the parasitoid‐free population, even in the same field cage under parasitoid‐free conditions. Laboratory observations demonstrated that the population difference in parasitism rate was principally due to intrinsic differences in the settling behavior of nymphs; some first‐instar nymphs derived from the parasitoid‐present population burrowed under another scale settled. These results strongly suggest that the natural selection pressure imposed by the parasitoids modified the settling behavior of the arrowhead scale.  相似文献

The armored scales Fiorinia externa Ferris and Aspidiotus cryptomeriae Kuwana (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) are increasingly damaging to Christmas tree plantings in southern New England. The systemic insecticide dinotefuran was investigated for selectively suppressing armored scale populations relative to their natural enemies in cooperating growers' fields in 2008 and 2009. Banded soil application of dinotefuran resulted in poor control. However, a dinotefuran spray applied to the basal 25 cm of trunk resulted in its absorption through the bark, translocation to the foliage, and good efficacy. The basal bark spray did not significantly impact the activity of predators Chilocorus stigma (Say) or Cybocephalus nipponicus Enrody-Younga and in 2009 showed a dosage-dependent improvement in the percentage of scales parasitized by Encarsia citrina Craw. A field dosage-response factorial experiment revealed that a 0.25% (vol:vol) addition of a surfactant with dinotefuran did not enhance insecticidal effect. Probit-transformed scale population reduction relative to the untreated check was subjected to linear regression analysis; reduction of scale populations was proportional to the log of insecticide dosage, whereas basal bark spray efficacy declined in proportion to the cube of tree height. The regression equation can be used to optimize dosage relative to tree height. Excellent efficacy resulted from basal bark spray application dates of 28 April (prebud break) to mid-June, but earlier spray timing within that treatment window had fewer crawlers discoloring new growth with their short-lived feeding. A basal bark spray of dinotefuran is well suited for integration with natural enemies to manage armored scales in Christmas tree plantations.  相似文献

We previously reported the drastic decline of the arrowhead scale, Unaspis yanonensis Kuwana (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) following the introduction of two parasitoid species, Aphytis yanonensis DeBach et Rosen and Coccobius fulvus Compere et Annecke (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), which were used as biological control agents in a Japanese grove of Satsuma mandarin oranges, Citrus unshiu Marc. (Rutaceae). In this study, we examined whether the parasitoids regulated the scale population at lower levels after its initial decline. Specifically, we monitored the population dynamics of the scale and the rates of parasitism by the two parasitoids three times per year for 16 years following the introduction of the wasps. The two parasitoid species maintained a U. yanonensis density at 1/200 of the density prior to their introduction. When we excluded the wasps, the scale population grew at a rate that was more than fivefold that of a control (parasitoid‐infested) group. Although the rates of parasitism by C. fulvus fluctuated, they remained at relatively high levels, whereas those of A. yanonensis were 0% over the last 6 years. A repeated‐measures ANOVA indicated that scale density remained stable subsequent to its rapid decline. This showed that the parasitoids stabilized the scale population at a lower level than host plant limitations would have dictated, and strongly suggests that C. fulvus alone regulates the scale population density at an extremely low level. The latter finding contradicts other studies which have suggested that the two parasitoid species complement each other in regulating scale density. We discuss whether a behavioral refuge used by the scale against parasitoids, which we have demonstrated in an earlier study, might contribute to the observed stable host–parasitoid system at low densities.  相似文献

In unifested fields, 80 cassava tips were artificially infested with 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 third instars, and 20 or 100 eggs of cassava mealybug,Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hom., Pseudococcidae). Another 80 uninfested tips served as a control. Tips were arranged in a circle of 28 m diameter, in the centre of which the following exotic natural enemies ofP. manihoti were released:Apoanagyrus (Epidinocarsis) lopezi De Santis andA. diversicornis (Howard) (Hym., Encyrtidae),Hyperaspis notata (Mulsant) andDiomus hennesseyi Fürsch (Col., Coccinellidae), and others. This experiment was repeated six times. During the 4–14 days following release, all experimental tips were inspected at two-hour intervals during each day and the presence of exotic as well as indigenous natural enemies, likeExochomus troberti Mulsant (Col., Coccinellidae), ants and spiders was noted. The experiment was repeated six times measured the aggregative response by the natural enemies to different host densities, achieved through host attractance and arrestment. All exotic natural enemies, except the males ofApoanagyrus spp., were fast attracted to the host colonies. As compared to the control tips, they concentrated on the infested tips about 50-fold for the twoApoanagyrus spp. and 10 to 20-fold for the exotic coccinellids. By contrast, non-coevolved indigenous coccinellids, as well as generalist predators like ants and spiders were attracted to the infested tips only 2 to 5-fold.A. lopezi responded best to different host densities, followed byA. diversicornis and the coccinellids, followed by ants and spiders. None of the parasitoids or predators was particularly attracted to egg masses. These results correspond closely to the known efficiencies of these natural enemies,A. lopezi standing out among all candidates. The results of such aggregation studies are compared with those of life-table studies.  相似文献
