The effects of pinealectomy on plasma T3, T4 and free T4 concentrations were studied for about 10 weeks in pigeons maintained either under a constant short photophase or in a regime where a long photophase was replaced by a short one during the experiments. The results indicate that, regardless of the photoperiod, no clear functional relationship can be found between the avian pineal gland and thyroid function, although a transitory increase in T4 levels was seen in both pinealectomized and sham-operated birds shortly after the operations.  相似文献

Plasma glucose concentrations in birds are much higher than those in mammals of similar body mass, and they are thought to be kept more or less constant. We investigated plasma glucose concentrations of Malachite Sunbirds (Nectarinia famosa) to determine whether there was a circadian rhythm in plasma glucose and whether plasma glucose concentrations rose at lower temperatures. We explored the possibility that glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis might be used by birds before daylight to generate body heat during arousal from torpor or from overnight adaptive heterothermy. Plasma glucose concentration of Malachite Sunbirds were relatively high, between 13.6 and 21.4 mmol/L. Plasma glucose concentrations were higher at 5°C than at 25°C, and generally lower during the scotophase, particularly in the early hours of the morning. Therefore, it appears that Malachite Sunbirds are not increasing plasma glucose concentrations during arousal from torpor or to increase scotophase body temperature levels to photophase levels. It is apparent that these nectarivorous birds have a circadian variation in plasma glucose concentrations that is affected by ambient temperature and feeding patterns.  相似文献

Abstract. The adipokinetic hormone (Grb-AKH) content in the corpora car-diaca of the house cricket, Acheta domesticus , varied during a day with two peaks in the scotophase and one peak in the photophase. There were two distinct peaks of total lipid concentration in the blood, one early in the photophase and the other early in the scotophase. Fat body sensitivity to adipokinetic hormone also varied in close synchrony with the lipid rhythm. It was not possible to attribute the rhythm of blood lipid titre unequivocally to either the rhythm of adipokinetic hormone content in the corpora cardiaca or to the rhythm of sensitivity of the fat body to the hormone. In adult crickets the blood carbohydrate titre had two peaks in adult females, one towards the end of scotophase and another in the late photophase (c. 12h apart), but a single peak at the end of scotophase was apparent in last instar larvae. The blood carbohydrate rhythm persists in DD and is therefore endogenous. Carbohydrates were not mobilized by the Grb-AKH, therefore could not be involved in the blood carbohydrate rhythm. Exposure to various day lengths caused shifts in the patterns of the carbohydrate rhythms, but imposition of a cyclic temperature regime had no effect on the rhythm.  相似文献

Exposure of pinealectomized rats to high ambient temperature (35 degrees C; PXH) brought about a diminution in pituitary weight and LH content when compared to their sham-operated peers (35 degrees C) or to pinealectomized controls (22 degrees C). Serum corticosterone level of PXH rats was significantly depressed while heat or pinealectomy alone had no effect. Mean oestrous cycle length was prolonged and blood serum progesterone was increased in the heat-exposed rats. However, the extended oestrous cycles and elevated serum progesterone levels of heat-exposed rats were depressed or abolished by pineal ablation. Thus, the pineal appears to exert a moderating effect on heat-induced endocrine changes in female rats. No changes were noticed in uterine and ovarian weights corrected for body weights either on the day of vaginal opening, at occurrence of the oestrous phase expressed as percentage of total oestrous cycle, or in N-acetyltransferase and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase activities.  相似文献

Female Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to a short (6L:18D) photoperiod from 21 days of age were mated when they reached 55 days of age. On Day 2 of gestation animals were pinealectomized or sham-operated. On Day 5 after birth male pups of the two groups of dams were either pinealectomized or sham-operated. They were killed at 42 and 49 days of age. In offspring born to sham-operated dams and in those born to pinealectomized mothers, neonatal pineal ablation resulted in increased testicular testosterone and androstenedione content. In sham-operated and neonatally pinealectomized rats removal of the maternal pineal gland induced a decrease in testicular testosterone and androstenedione content. In contrast, after maternal pinealectomy there was a decrease in plasma testosterone and dihydrotestosterone values and testicular dihydrotestosterone content in sham-operated rats but not in those neonatally pinealectomized. We conclude that (1) the pineal glands of the mother and offspring are required to maintain normal testicular testosterone and androstenedione content in the rat, and (2) the pineal of the offspring influences the inhibitory effects of maternal pinealectomy on testicular dihydrotestosterone content and on plasma testosterone and dihydrotestosterone concentration in the offspring.  相似文献

【目的】生物钟普遍存在于生物体的生长发育、行为及生理等各个方面。本研究旨在探究光周期和温度对生物钟基因cwo在棉铃虫Helicoverpa armigera幼虫昼夜节律表达的影响。【方法】通过转录组测序获得了生物钟基因cwo的c DNA开放阅读框全长,利用实时荧光定量PCR技术分析了生物钟基因cwo在棉铃虫幼虫中的时空表达,以及其在不同光周期和不同温度条件下的昼夜表达节律。【结果】序列分析结果显示,棉铃虫生物钟基因cwo的c DNA序列开放阅读框为1 335 bp,编码444个氨基酸残基,预测蛋白的分子质量为49.95 ku。时空表达分析表明,cwo基因在棉铃虫幼虫组织中以脑和腹神经索表达量较高,在卵孵化期、蜕皮期、蛹变态期及羽化前1 d高峰度表达。头部昼夜节律表达分析表明,正常光周期条件下生物钟基因cwo呈昼夜节律表达,在暗期高表达;短时间持续暗期/光期处理使cwo表达的时间相位提前,长时间持续暗期/光期处理使cwo表达的节律性显著降低;38℃处理使cwo表达短期内显著上调,并改变了其节律性,18℃处理使cwo表达在暗期显著下调,但是节律性不变。【结论】生物钟基因cwo在棉铃虫幼虫头部的昼夜节律表达受到光周期和温度的影响。  相似文献

Summary Melatonin levels in the plasma of homing pigeons were measured by radioimmunoassay. In a 1212 LD cycle a robust daily rhythm of plasma melatonin was found in intact birds. This rhythm is significantly reduced in amplitude after pinealectomy, and disappears completely after the pinealectomized animals have been bilaterally enucleated. The results indicate that in the pigeon 70% of the nighttime peak of blood-borne melatonin comes from the pineal gland, while 17% comes from the retina. In addition, there is a relatively large amount (13%) of non-rhythmic melatonin of unidentified origin. The melatonin rhythm appears to be circadian in nature, since melatonin levels begin to fall before lights-on in LD, and rhythmicity persists in intact and pinealectomized birds for at least two cycles in DD. In conjunction with earlier studies, the present results are consistent with the hypothesis that melatonin serves as mediator of circadian information in the pigeon.  相似文献

We determined 24-hr plasma melatonin profiles in intact, sham-pinealectomized, and pinealectomized European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and house sparrows (Passer domesticus) in a light-dark (LD) cycle and in constant darkness (DD). In the intact and sham-pinealectomized birds of both species, a melatonin rhythm was found, with low levels during the day and high levels during the night. Pinealectomy abolished the nighttime peak of melatonin in both species; hence, levels were low at all times sampled. This uniform response of plasma melatonin to pinealectomy contrasts with the differential response of circadian activity rhythms to pinealectomy for these two species. In DD, locomotor activity in pinealectomized house sparrows is usually arrhythmic, whereas in starlings a rhythm usually persists. This suggests that in the latter species free-running circadian rhythms are not necessarily dependent on a rhythm in plasma melatonin. The same is true for the synchronized activity rhythm observed in pinealectomized birds of both species in LD, as well as for the damped rhythm that persists in pinealectomized house sparrows following an LD-to-DD transfer. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the pineal and its periodic output of melatonin constitute only one component in a system of at least two coupled pacemakers. They also suggest that there are species differences in the relative role played by the pineal and other pacemakers in controlling circadian rhythms in behavior.  相似文献

用 7条舟山眼镜蛇 (Najaatra)研究动物对光暗周期加热光源反应所导致的体温变化。设计两项实验 ,每项实验历时 9d。实验一光照期覆盖整个白天 ,实验二光照期覆盖整个晚上。眼镜蛇仅在加热光源开启期间进行体温调节 ,但光照期内任何阶段都未发现所有个体同时处于热活动状态。两项实验中热活动个体百分比的时间变化显著 ,实验二热活动个体百分比波动相对大于实验一。在加热光源开启期间 ,实验一热活动眼镜蛇的百分比总体上大于实验二。在两项实验中 ,热活动眼镜蛇体温的时间变化都不显著。实验一热活动眼镜蛇的体温高于实验二 ,而两项实验中不处于热活动状态的眼镜蛇的平均体温无显著差异。实验一热活动眼镜蛇 (31 1±0 8°C)选择的体温上限高于实验二眼镜蛇 (2 6 0± 0 9°C)。在两项实验的任何时间段内 ,眼镜蛇的体温都不低于环境温度。  相似文献

Female Sprague-Dawley rats, exposed to a long (18L:6D) or a short (6L:18D) photoperiod from 21 days of age, were mated when they reached 55 days of age. On Day 2 of gestation, dams were pinealectomized or sham-operated. Pre- and postnatal photoperiods were identical, and offspring were killed at 15 days of age. Maternal pinealectomy had no effect when rats were kept on 18L:6D. Rats born to sham-operated mothers and kept on 6L:18D had higher testicular testosterone and androstenedione content than offspring raised on the long photoperiod. This stimulatory effect of the short photoperiod was blocked by maternal pinealectomy and was not dependent on the offspring's own pineal since it was observed in both sham-operated and neonatally (on Day 5 after birth) pinealectomized rats. When sham-operated mothers housed on 18L:6D were treated daily during pregnancy and lactation by s.c. melatonin injection, there was an increase in the testicular testosterone content of offspring. It was concluded that when rats are maintained on a 6L:18D cycle the maternal pineal gland enhances the testicular testosterone and androstenedione content in 15-day-old offspring. This effect is probably mediated by maternally derived melatonin. At 15 days of age, the pineal of the offspring had no influence on testicular function.  相似文献

1. We measured brain and colonic temperatures in adult pigeons (Columba livia) with or without oesophageal ligation, and with or without simultaneous eye covering at ambient temperatures between 24 degrees C and 45 degrees C. 2. Colonic and brain temperatures rose at the higher ambient temperatures; the temperature elevations were no different in pigeons with oesophageal ligation, compared to sham-operated controls. The presence of simultaneous eye covering also had no effect on colonic or brain temperatures. 3. Oesophageal inflation decreased from a rate of 2.8 +/- 1.4 per minute (mean +/- SEM) to zero, in anaesthetized pigeons when warmed from a colonic temperature of 40.5 degrees C to 43.8 degrees C. 4. In pigeons oesophageal inflation plays no significant part in body temperature regulation or in the maintenance of a lower brain than body temperature even in hot ambient conditions.  相似文献

Abstract. The selection of habitats with favourable temperature by the apple blossom weevil Anthonomus pomorum (L.) is investigated in a temperature gradient arena with a range of approximately 0–15 °C. Single female and male weevils are tested in the arena 2, 4 and 6 days after termination of diapause, during photophase and during scotophase. During photophase, weevils of both sexes choose the warmest part of the temperature gradient arena, irrespective of the time elapsed after diapause. During scotophase, high temperature is favoured by male weevils, as well as by females 2 and 4 days after diapause. However, 6 days after termination of diapause, females show no thermal preference in the temperature gradient arena during scotophase, indicating that thermal choice of female A. pomorum in the scotophase changes with time after the termination of diapause. The results suggest that both sexes benefit from thermoregulation by habitat choice during photophase when the weevils are flight active and colonize apple trees.  相似文献

Both light and temperature can influence the pineal's synthesis of the indoleamine melatonin. An investigation of the effects of light and temperature cycles on the pineal melatonin rhythm (PMR) showed the following: (1) Both daily light cycles and daily temperature cycles could entrain the PMR; melatonin levels peaked during the dark phase of a light-dark cycle or the cool phase of a temperature cycle. (2) The PMR could be entrained by a temperature cycle as low as 2 degrees C in amplitude in lizards held in constant light or constant darkness. (3) The length of the photoperiod or thermoperiod affected the phase, amplitude, or duration of the PMR. (4) When presented together, the effects of light and temperature cycles on the PMR depended on the phase relationship between the light and temperature cycles, as well as on the strength of the entraining stimuli, such as the amplitude of the temperature cycle. (5) Exposure to a constant cold temperature (10 degrees C) eliminated the PMR, yet a rhythm could still be expressed under a 24-hr temperature cycle (32 degrees C/10 degrees C), and the rhythm peaked during the 10 degrees C phase of the cycle. (6) A 6-hr dark pulse presented during the day did not elicit a premature rise in melatonin levels. These studies show how environmental stimuli can control the pineal rhythm of melatonin synthesis and secretion. Previous studies have supported a model in which the lizard's pineal acts as a circadian pacemaker within a multioscillator circadian system, and have implicated melatonin as a hormone by which the pineal may communicate with the rest of the system. The lizard pineal, therefore, may act as a photo- and thermoendocrine transducer translating light and temperature information into an internal cue in the form of the PMR. The PMR, in turn, may control the phase and period of circadian clocks located elsewhere, insuring that the right internal events occur at the right time of day.  相似文献

Melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland, which is primarily regulated by the environmental lighting regime, can also be influenced by other factors that elicit modifications in sympathetic tone. The objectives of this study were to determine if forced swimming alters the normal pattern of melatonin production in the pineal gland of the Richardson's ground squirrel (Spermophilus richardsonii). In early June, the squirrels were forced to swim for 10 min during the photophase or during the scotophase. In mid-July squirrels swam only during the scotophase. Animals were sacrificed 15, 30, or 60 min after the onset of swimming. Activities of pineal N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) were assessed by radioenzyme assay, and pineal melatonin content was measured by radioimmunoassay. Daytime swimming elicited no major changes in enzyme activity or pineal melatonin. In June, swimming at night prevented the normal rises in NAT activity and pineal melatonin seen in nonswimming controls. In contrast, the pineals of squirrels that were tested 6 weeks later in mid-July did not appear to be as sensitive to nighttime swimming, as there were only minor differences in both NAT activity and melatonin content compared to controls. These results demonstrate that forced nighttime swimming, unlike several other aversive stimuli, can evoke changes in the normal pattern of pineal melatonin production in this species. Furthermore, the pineal's response to such stimuli may not be stable over the course of the active season.  相似文献

Adult pigeons were subjected to acute cold exposure (-25 degrees C; 30 min) after which the levels of blood glucose, blood and muscle lactate and plasma lactic dehydrogenase were measured. Partially defeathered (dorsum and pectoral regions) birds, following exposure to cold, showed marked reduction in blood glucose and blood and muscle (pectoralis) lactate. Fully plumed birds, in contrast, showed no significant reduction in body temperature or blood glucose and only moderately reduced lactate levels indicating the effectiveness of the insulative feather coat in maintaining thermal and metabolic homeostasis. The partially-defeathered pigeons exposed to cold showed a two-to-three-fold increase in plasma lactic dehydrogenase activity, which may reflect a molecular adaptation in their calorigenic response to cold.  相似文献

The present experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of pinealectomy and bilateral enucleation on the ovarian activity in Rana perezi frogs maintained in 12-h light--12-h dark photoperiod and 20 +/- 1 degrees C during the vitellogenetic growth in late autumn. These environmental conditions, mainly temperature, induce a gonadal and metabolic response similar to that observed in the natural habitat in summer: a marked ovarian follicular regression, a depletion of the energetic resources from fat bodies and liver, and a minimum in oestradiol circulating levels. This response is partially blocked by pinealectomy and blinding. Protein phosphorus, as an index of vitellogenic proteins, and total ovary lipid content were significantly higher in pinealectomized and blinded frogs with respect to sham-operated animals. Likewise, oestradiol concentrations showed a significant increase during the dark phase of the daily photocycle in pinealectomized and blinded animals. From our results, we can suggest that the arrest of vitellogenesis, the depletion of energetic resources, and the regulation of oestradiol levels induced by the high temperature in Rana perezi frogs can be influenced, at least in part, by the pineal complex and lateral eyes.  相似文献

Twenty-eight-day-old male rats were used in three experiments to study whether cold exposure potentiates pineal actions in nonhibernating mammals. The following questions were considered: (a) Can cold exposure increase the antigonadal effects of light deprivation? (b) Are the effects induced by blindness plus cold exposure pineal dependent? (c) Can cold exposure modify the response of the endocrine-reproductive axis to exogenously administered melatonin? Blind cold-exposed rats showed a significant loss in body weight as well as in weights of pituitary and reproductive tract organs compared with either intact or blind animals kept at 22 degrees C, or intact rats exposed to cold; serum testosterone levels were also lowest in blind cold-exposed rats. These effects were not present in blind cold-exposed animals that were pinealectomized at the beginning of the experiment. When intact animals placed at 22 or 10 degrees C were treated with daily injections of melatonin (50 micrograms) there was a reduction of body weight and weights of the hypophyso-gonadal axis organs. Those effects of melatonin were, however, significantly greater in cold-exposed rats than in rats placed at 22 degrees C. These results suggest that cold exposure should be considered as another state which potentiates the pineal-dependent actions of light deprivation. Cold exposure probably acts by increasing the sensitivity of sites at which pineal melatonin exerts its actions.  相似文献

Summary Pinealectomized and sham-operated European starlings were maintained for 16 months under a constant 12-h photoperiod and constant temperature conditions. In all birds, testicular width was measured at about monthly intervals and the onset and end of molt was determined. Shortly after the beginning of the experiment, the sham-operated birds went through a cycle of testicular growth and regression which was followed by a complete molt; subsequently most individuals initiated a second testicular cycle. Most of the pinealectomized birds, in contrast, failed to go through a second testicular cycle. Moreover, during the first cycle their testes regressed earlier than in the sham-operated birds and the subsequent molt was relatively advanced. In these respects the pinealectomized birds behaved like intact starlings under a 13-h photoperiod. Since pinealectomy probably changes the phase-relationship between circadian rhythms and the entraining light-dark cycle it is proposed that pinealectomy in the present experiment might have altered the phase-relationship between a circadian rhythm of photosensitivity and the light-dark cycle in such a way that the birds interpreted the 12-h photoperiod as a 13-h photoperiod.This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft SPP Mechanismen biologischer Uhren.  相似文献

Codling moth female calling and male pheromone responsiveness under the defined conditions of 23°C and light:dark (LD) 16:8 occurred primarily during scotophase. Under either continuous photophase or scotophase females called with periodicities very similar to their periodicity under the LD cycle, indicating that the rhythmicity is circadian. Male response rhythmicity was maintained under continuous photophase. A decrease in the temperature from 23° to 16°C resulted in a reduction in the proportion calling when the decrease in temperature occurred during scotophase and a shift of maximal calling into photophase when the decrease in temperature occurred 3 hr prior to the initiation of scotophase. Decreases of temperature from 23° to 16°C and of light intensity did not produce similar shifts in the periodicity of male upwind orientation. Of 6 pheromone dosages from 10?5 to 102 μg, 10?1 and 100 μg elicited the most male upwind orientation.  相似文献
