A phylogenetic and morphological study of green algae resembling Ulva conglobata from Japan was undertaken, along with morphological observations of the original material of U. conglobata Kjellman. The samples resembling U. conglobata included five genetically distinct species: U. fasciata, U. pertusa, U. tanneri, Ulva sp. 1 and Ulva sp. 2. The discovery of marginal denticulations in some of the original material of U. conglobata, made it possible to distinguish those species without denticulations: U. pertusa, U. tanneri and Ulva sp. 2. The morphological characteristics of Ulva sp. 1 matched those of U. conglobata, but Ulva sp. 1 was not clearly identified as U. conglobata owing to the lack of DNA sequence data of the original material. Ulva sp. 2 had lobes adhering to each other by rhizoids. This morphological feature is stable in Ulva sp. 2 and unique among Ulva species. In conjunction with the molecular data, Ulva sp. 2 was described as a new species, U. adhaerens sp. nov. This species features rhizoidal extensions in regions other than the base and an elaborate arrangement of the extensions used for adhesion. It thereby expands our knowledge of the morphogenesis of the morphologically simple genus Ulva.  相似文献

Vegetative and fertile frond segments of Botrychium have been recovered from Paleocene deposits of central Alberta, Canada. Specimens are preserved as coalified compressions that yield information about frond structure, sporangia, and spore ultrastructure. These fossils, described as Botrychium wightonii sp. nov., establish a megafossil record for the Ophioglossales, and demonstrate that modern-appearing species of the order were present in western North America by the earliest Tertiary. The largest vegetative fragments are up to 4.6 cm long and tripinnately compound, with opposite to subopposite branching. Ultimate segments are pinnatifid with dentate pinnules and open dichotomous venation. Fertile specimens are also tripinnately compound with a long rachis and subopposite to alternate pinnae. Sporangia are either submarginal and superficial, or marginal, and are all directed toward one surface of the pinnule. They are ovoid to subspheroidal and 0.8-2.0 mm in diameter. Some sporangia are apparently stalked, while others appear to be sessile. This variation results both from the ultimate frond segments being compressed in several different planes, and the fossils being exposed at different levels. Spores macerated from the sporangia are radial and trilete, and range 30–67 μm in diameter. Most are psilate, but some have a densely striate surface.  相似文献

To clarify recruitment patterns of Photinia glabra, which is an evergreen, broad‐leaved, bird‐dispersed tree species, we analyzed spatial distribution in P. glabra recruits at each growth stage and demography of current‐year seedlings with respect to distributions of adults in a warm‐temperate secondary forest, western Japan. Although individuals ≥ 5 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) that had nearly produced fruits showed a random distribution, seedlings (≥ 1 year old, < 10‐cm stem length [SL]), small saplings (10 ≤ SL < 30 cm) and large saplings (≥ 30‐cm SL, < 5‐cm DBH) were clumped and associated with reproductive adults at approximately 2–3‐m scales, nearly equal to their average crown radius. Based on monitoring the demography of current‐year seedlings, emerged seedling density profoundly decreased, and no seedlings survived at longer than an adult's crown scales, with distance‐dependent mortality as a result of disease and herbivory not greatly affecting the current‐year seedling mortality. Thus, aggregated seed dispersal under the crown of adult P. glabra would directly influence the distribution of recruits for P. glabra in this forest. Of the bird‐dispersed tree species in this forest, P. glabra produced the highest amount of fruits during large crop years, and their fruits ripened during the late seasonal period (early January), suggesting that birds might be strongly attracted to these species, in turn leading to seeds being deposited mostly under the tree crowns. We propose that dispersal limitation would occur, even in a bird‐dispersed tree species such as P. glabra, owing to plant–bird interactions in the forest.  相似文献

This study investigated the influence of light on the distributional limits of Bostrychia scorpioides and Catenella caespitosa within a low amplitude intertidal zonation in the Palmones estuary, Spain. Changes in photosynthesis- and growth-irradiance curves and pigment content were examined ex situ at irradiances found in their natural habitat (10–230 µmol photons m?2 s?1). The highest maximum photosynthesis rate (Pm) and photosynthetic efficiency (α) were found between 20–40 µmol photons m?2 s?1 in both species. Bostrychia scorpioides, the uppermost intertidal species, had a higher Pm, α, dark respiration rate and light compensation point (Ec) than C. caespitosa at all acclimation irradiances. Net photosynthetic rates measured at their respective acclimation irradiances showed photosynthetic responses of B. scorpioides to be maximized at high irradiances, while in C. caespitosa they did not change. Higher growth rates were obtained in C. caespitosa than in B. scorpioides, which may be related to its lower thallus specific carbon content. When irradiance decreased, the chlorophyll a content of B. scorpioides increased whereas in C. caespitosa R-phycoerythrin increased. Ec for growth of B. scorpioides coincided with the irradiance at its lower distributional limit in the estuary, below which this species showed losses in biomass. However, in C. caespitosa the sustained growth ex situ at saturating irradiances contrasts with its absence from the upper intertidal zone, where similar light regimes occur. We demonstrated that while light clearly restricts the growth of B. scorpioides to the uppermost intertidal zone, this environmental factor would not prevent C. caespitosa from growing at higher levels.  相似文献

A stem segment and frond of Neuropteris attenuata Lindley et W. Hutton (Pteridospermopsida, Medullosales) are described from the lower Westphalian D (Upper Pennsylvanian) of the Piesberg quarry near Wallenhorst (north of Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, northwestern Germany). The narrow diameter of the stem (3–4 cm), conspicuously long internodes (>20 cm), and the large size of the frond (90 cm long) strongly suggest that N. attenuata was a non-self-supporting, leaning or lianescent plant.  相似文献

Microlepia boluoensis Y. Yuan & L. Fu, a new species of the genus Microlepia from Luofu mountain, Boluo county, Guangdong province, China, is described and illustrated. Its gametophytic chromosome number is n =47. Microlepia boluoensis has a similar morphology to M. scyphoformis, M. speluncae and M. hancei, such as creeping rhizomes, bipinnate‐tripinnatified laminas, intramarginal sori, cup‐shaped indusium and trilete spores, but it has a shorter creeping rhizome, larger frond (up to 351 cm), dry chartaceous, longer stipe (up to 139 cm), 23 pairs of primary pinnae, 1–13 sori, and spores with a distinct and raised laesurae.  相似文献

Three intertidal sites dominated by Corallina turfs were investigated in Hokkaido, Japan. The sites (A, B and C) differed in slope, wave exposure and length of time exposed to air during tidal cycles. Monthly samples were analyzed for frond morphology and other features. Site A, the most wave-exposed site, was dominated by Corallina sp. X, an unknown species, and sites B and C by Corallina pilulifera Postels et Ruprecht. At the different sites the populations differed in conceptacle abundance, coverage by epiphytic Titanoderma corallinae (P. Crouan et H. Crouan) Woelkerling, Chamberlain et Silva, amount of contained sediment, numbers of axes per quadrat, numbers of branch fusions, branch entanglement, frond dryweight, frond length, amount of adventitious branching, numbers of epiphytes (exclusive of T. corallinae), and numbers of animal species. Ninety-one animal species were recorded from the turfs. Corallina is affected morphologically by conditions inherent in its microhabitat, including desiccation, epiphyte loading and the abundance of herbivores.  相似文献

Cladocora caespitosa is an endemic coral of the Mediterranean Sea and an important carbonate bioconstructor that adds 3D complexity to the habitat, thus increasing marine biodiversity. Despite its important role in the ecosystem, the real status of the population along most of the Mediterranean coastline is still poorly investigated and very little is known about the resilience of the species. Using non-destructive visual surveys, colonies of C. caespitosa were investigated by SCUBA diving in 2013 and 2015 at seven sites of the northern Adriatic Sea (southern part of the Gulf of Trieste). Data about colony size, index of sphericity and corallite diameter were collected. Almost all biometrical parameters differed significantly among sampling sites, showing low occurrence of the larger size classes compared to the abundance of small-sized colonies. This pattern of distribution is typical of long-lived organisms. The positively skewed colony size distribution could be due to both a high mortality rate of small colonies unable to reach larger size classes, and to a high fragmentation rate of colonies, related to a strong hydrodynamic forces. The northern Adriatic population of C. caespitosa has previously been investigated by Schiller, who reported size and abundance data of colonies from one site, at a depth range of 2–5?m. We compared these data with our findings from the same sampling site, adding new information about the ecology of C. caespitosa. After a 30-year period, the comparison shows a change in the size distribution of colonies, with a decrease of the small class and an increase of the medium class of colonies. In view of these conclusions, further assessments are required in order to evaluate the trend of the northernmost C. caespitosa population in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Transplanting experiments were carried out to determine whether the small type sporophytes with short stipe of Ecklonia cava Kjellman (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) growing in a locality with warm temperatures, change into larger type with a long stipe when transplanted to a locality with cooler temperatures. Juvenile E. cava sporophytes, having a stipe shorter than 5 cm long were collected from Tei in Tosa Bay (southern Japan) (seawater temperature 15–29°C) and transplanted to Nabeta Bay (central Japan) (seawater temperature 13–25°C), where larger type E. cava sporophytes characterized by long stipe (ca 1 m) grow. They were attached to artificial reefs at the sea bottom (9 m depth) in Nabeta Bay to monitor their growth. For comparison, juvenile E. cava sporophytes of almost similar size growing in Nabeta Bay were also transplanted in the same way to the same experimental site. Observations of growth of sporophytes from Tei and Nabeta were carried out monthly for 2 years from November 1995 to October 1997. The transplanted Tei and Nabeta sporophytes showed an increase in stipe length and diameter from winter to spring, whereas almost no increase was observed during summer and autumn. At the end of the study period, the stipe of Nabeta sporophytes reached 25.6 cm in length and 17.0 mm in diameter, whereas that of Tei sporophytes reached 11.1 cm in length and 11.2 mm in diameter. The primary blade length was 16.0 cm in Nabeta sporophytes, whereas it was 5.5 cm in Tei sporophytes. Thus, Tei sporophytes still remained smaller than Nabeta sporophytes even under the same environmental conditions.  相似文献

Fronds of clonal seaweeds with extensive holdfasts relative to frond size are known not to self‐thin during growth, even in crowded stands. We tested whether frond self‐thinning would occur for such a seaweed since these traits are more similar to those of unitary seaweeds, which do self‐thin in crowded conditions. We used Sargassum lapazeanum Setch. et N. L. Gardner (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) from the Pacific coast of Mexico, for which we first confirmed its clonal nature by performing a regeneration experiment in culture tanks. During the growth season (winter to late spring), S. lapazeanum stand biomass increased, while frond density and size inequality (Gini coefficient for frond biomass) decreased. These results indicate that self‐thinning occurred at the frond level. We propose a conceptual model for frond dynamics for clonal seaweeds in general. In stands of clonal species with small fronds and relatively extensive holdfasts (particularly when holdfasts are perennial), frond dynamics would be determined mostly by intraclonal regulation, which seems to prevent excessive crowding from occurring. Such species display a positive biomass–density relationship during the growth season. On the contrary, in stands of clonal species with large fronds relative to holdfast size, frond dynamics would be determined mostly by interactions among genets. For such species, self‐thinning may be detected at the frond level in crowded stands, resulting in a negative biomass–density relationship during growth.  相似文献

The size, growth and reproductive biology of the giant mudskipper, Periophthalmodon schlosseri, was studied in the inter‐tidal mudflat of a mangrove swamp along a 0.4–0.6 × 5 km stretch of the Sepang coastal waters, Selangor Malaysia. The size ranges of the giant mudskipper specimens caught in the study area were between 10–27.5 cm TL (20.6 ± 3.1 cm) for males and 14.5–28.5 cm TL (21.9 ± 2.3 cm) for females. Male to female sex ratio during the study was 1 : 1.1. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were L = 29 cm and K = 1.4 year?1, with a growth performance index of Ø′ = 3.1. Otolith microstructure analysis revealed a strong correlation (Female: r = 0.920, n = 35; Male: r = 0.943, n = 41, P < 0.05) between the number of daily rings (number of days old) over the respective size ranges of male (8.5–19.5 cm SL) and female fish (11.8–22.3 cm SL). Four maturity stages were described to follow gonadal development based on external features; these stages were further validated through histological examination of the ovary and oocyte diameter measurements. The gonadal development cycle of P. schlosseri was asynchronous, as marked by the random mixture of early stages oocytes (diameter: 70.7 ± 14.9 μm) to matured stages (356.9 ± 20.2 μm), and had a prolonged spawning season extending from June to October. Monthly fluctuation of the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices for this species was highly correlated (r = 0.126, P < 0.05).  相似文献

The subtidal brown algal species Sporochnus dotyi Brostoff (Sporochnales, Phaeophyceae), which has been regarded as a Hawaiian endemic, is reported from Kushimoto, Kii Peninsula, Pacific coast of central Honshu, Japan, for the first time outside Hawai'i. The species grew on subtidal rocks ca. 5–20 m deep attached by a small conical holdfast. The erect thalli were 5–30 cm high, terete, robust and alternately branched in 1–2 orders. When mature, pedicellate receptacles developed on the branches, and formed elliptical sori 1 mm long with a pedicel 3–5 mm long. The apical parts of the thalli and the receptacles were terminated with a tuft of simple assimilatory filaments of up to 4 mm long and showed prominent green to yellow underwater iridescence. Reproductive filaments (paraphyses) were densely packed, simple, up to 200 μm long and bore 4–6 mostly unilateral unilocular zoidangia 20–22 μm long and 5–6 m in diameter. In the genetic analyses, the Sporochnus alga from Kushimoto had partial rbcL sequence identical to S. dotyi from Hawai'i. The cox3 phylogeny revealed that this alga formed a fully supported clade with S. dotyi. Therefore, we identified the alga from Kushimoto as S. dotyi. This finding of S. dotyi from Japan, together with the recent reports of the mesophotic macroalgae Ryuguphycus kuaweuweu (=Umbraulva kuaweuweu), Ulva iliohaha and Newhousia imbricata from various localities in the Pacific Ocean including Japan, suggest closer biogeographical connections of subtidal/mesophotic macroalgae in the Pacific than previously recognized.  相似文献

Brown seaweeds of the genus Fucus occupy a wide variety of temperate coastal habitats. The genus is evolutionary dynamic with recent radiations to form morphologically distinct taxa. In the brackish Baltic Sea, fucoids are the only perennial canopy‐forming macroalgae. The most northern populations of Fucus occur permanently submerged in extremely low salinity (3–5 psu). These are currently referred to as Fucus vesiculosus L. but are morphologically distinct with a narrow frond without bladders. We report here that a population of this unique morphotype is reproductively isolated from a truly sympatric population of common F. vesiculosus and conclude that the northern morphotype represents a previously undescribed species. We describe Fucus radicans sp. nov., which is attached and dioecious with broadly elliptic receptacles, characterized by a richly branched narrow flat frond (2–5 mm), short thallus (<26 cm), and a high capacity for vegetative recruitment of attached plants. Analysis of five highly polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci showed genetic differentiation between sympatric populations of F. radicans and F. vesiculosus, whereas allopatric populations of the same species revealed a coherent pattern of genetic variation. Sequences of the RUBISCO region in F. radicans were identical to or differing at only one to two dinucleotide positions from those of F. vesiculosus, indicating a recent common origin of the two species.  相似文献

Summary The habitat preference as regards depth and vegetation areas is discussed for a number ofPiona species.P. conglobata mainly walks over the water plants and undertakes swimming excursions of short duration from there.Arrenurus crassicaudatus is a bottom dweller. This behaviour is related to the searching activities for preys. The main food ofA. crassicaudatus consists of ostracods.P. conglobata prefersDaphnia aboveCyclops, while forUnionicola crassipes the reverse holds true.P. conglobata andU. crassipes do not recognize ostracods as possible preys. The relative prey size greatly influences the rate of catching success. The feeding strategies (catching behaviour, prey preferences and handling time) of these three species are discussed. Differences in these strategies are also considered in view of species diversity.  相似文献

The importance that frond crowding represents for the survival of fronds of the clonal intertidal alga Mazzaella cornucopiae (Postels et Ruprecht) Hommersand (Rhodophyta, Gigartinaceae) was investigated in Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Frond density is high for this species, up to 20 fronds·cm?2 in the most crowded stands. Frond crowding imposes a cost in the form of reduced net photosynthetic rates when fronds are fully hydrated as a result of reduced irradiance compared with experimental (not found naturally) low-density stands. However, the interaction between desiccation and irradiance alters this relationship between net photosynthetic rates and frond density. During a typical daytime low tide in spring, irradiance is 10–30 μmol·m?2·s?1 below the canopy of fronds, and frond desiccation (relative to total water content) can reach 43% at the end of the low tide. In contrast to natural stands, fronds from experimentally thinned stands are subjected to irradiances up to 2000 μmol·m?2·s?1 because of the spatial separation among fronds and can desiccate up to 81% at the end of the same low tide. Laboratory experiments showed that negative net photosynthetic rates occur between 40% and 80% desiccation at an irradiance of 515 μmol·m?2·s?1, and the literature suggests that strong bleaching could occur as a result. At 20 μmol·m?2·s?1 of irradiance and desiccation levels up to 40%, simulating understory conditions of natural stands, net photosynthetic rates are never negative. Experimental thinning of stands of M. cornucopiae done during spring effectively resulted in a stronger extent of frond bleaching compared with natural stands. Therefore, the cost of reduced net photosynthetic rates at high frond densities when fronds are fully hydrated is counterbalanced by the protective effects of frond crowding against extensive bleaching, essential for survival at the intertidal zone. Future research will have to demonstrate the possible relationship between the frequency and duration of negative net photosynthetic rates and the extent of frond bleaching.  相似文献

Data on sexual reproduction of scleractinian coral species living in temperate zones, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea, are quite scarce. This paper describes sexual reproduction of the colonial coral Cladocora caespitosa from Veliko jezero (Mljet Island) in the Adriatic Sea. Spawned orange eggs and white sperm bundles were observed on the coral bank of C. caespitosa two nights before the full moon (20 June 2005) coinciding with increasing water temperature and correlated with the lunar cycle. Spawning was observed during five nights, involving about 30% of the colonies from the coral bank. Different colonies on the bank released only one type of gamete during the reproductive period. The diameter of the sperm bundles ranged from 100 to 200 μm (average 163 μm; SD = 47.08), while the female gametes diameter ranged from 300 to 500 μm (average 416 μm; SD = 73.12).  相似文献

Sporophytes of Ecklonia cava Kjellman (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) were collected seasonally from within 3–4 replicate, 1‐m2 quadrates, haphazardly placed in dense assemblages at 6–9 m depth in Tei, Tosa Bay (southern Japan; water temperature 15–29°C) from 1995 to 1996, and in Nabeta Bay, Shimoda (central Japan; water temperature 13–25°C) from 1996 to 1997. Growth rings were checked for all samples and mean values of each biometric parameter of sporophytes 1‐year‐old and over were compared. The plant length (stipe length + primary blade length) was always shorter in Tei sporophytes (24–52 cm) than Nabeta sporophytes (70–100 cm), the difference being mainly owing to the shorter stipe length in Tei sporophytes (7–14 cm) than in Nabeta sporophytes (54–83 cm). However, the primary blade length was sometimes longer in Tei sporophytes (12–38 cm) than in Nabeta sporophytes (14–21 cm). Stipe diameter, longest bladelet length and primary blade width were mostly less in Tei sporophytes (8.6–12.4 mm, 5.5–7.0 cm and 23.4–38.0 cm, respectively) than Nabeta sporophytes (16.4–20.2 mm, 9.2–12.0 cm and 43.0–52.6 cm, respectively). Nevertheless, the number of bladelets of sporophytes from Tei (15–28) and Nabeta (18–29) were within the same range. At Tei, 32–43% of the sporophytes had wrinkled blades in summer and autumn, whereas wrinkled primary blades or bladelets were not observed in Nabeta sporophytes throughout the experimental period. These morphometric differences of E. cava between the two localities are suggested to be dependent on environmental factors, especially seawater temperature.  相似文献

In the protologue, Epimedium tianmenshanense (Berberidaceae), a species endemic to western Hunan, China, was described as ‘flower small, 0.2–0.4 cm diam., inner sepals white, petals as long as inner sepals or a little shorter than the latter, spur very short, ca 5.0 mm’. However, both morphological characteristics and molecular evidence suggest that E. tianmenshanense is closely related to E. baojingense, a taxon with a long spur, thus suggesting that the size of the floral parts is not as reliable as previously believed. When investigating the variability of E. tianmenshanense in more detail, in the field as well as in cultivation, we found that the petals were are highly variable in morphology (both shape and size), being cucullate, subulate, short to long spurred, and with various transitions. The flowers size varied from small to large accordingly. The flowers with cucullate and subulate petals, which were a little shorter than the inner sepals or almost as long as the latter, were small (about 0.8 cm in diameter). The flowers with long spurs, which were much longer than the inner sepals, were also large (about 2.5–3.5 cm in diameter). Finally, the flowers with short spurs, which were a little longer than the inner sepals, were medium-sized (about 1.0–1.2 cm in diameter). In addition, the color of inner sepals was revised from ‘white, occasionally light mulberry-purple’ to yellowish green or yellowish white. Epimedium tianmenshanense is a perfect example of natural petal evolution, which could be used for further taxonomic and evolutionary studies. The reason for the variation and the taxonomic treatment of the species still need further study.  相似文献

We describe a new organic-walled resting cyst from surface sediments of Imari Bay in western Japan. The cysts are spherical, 23–29 pm in diameter, and their surface is covered with spinous to membranous ornaments that are 5–7 μm long and 1.5–2.2 μm wide. The ornaments vary from slender and bifurcate to membranous and multifurcate distal extremities. No archeopyle was observed. The cyst shape is variable in both natural samples and clonal cultures. Vegetative cells are small and ovoid, 17–25 μm long and 14–21 μm wide, and are yellow-brown in color. The epitheca is conical with a conspicuous apical horn, and the hypotheca is hemispherical. The cingular transitional plate has a needle-like spine at its anterior right corner. The plate formula is Po, X, 4″3a, 7″, 5c, 5s 5″and 2″. Although vegetative cells of the present species correspond to Ensiculifera, it is distinct from other species in producing no calcareous cysts. No species of Ensiculifera has been reported to produce cysts composed of only an organic wall. The present species is provisionally placed in the genus Ensiculifera as E. imariense sp. nov.  相似文献
