Summary The antennal hygro- and thermoreceptive sensillum (sensillum capitulum) of the cockraoch, Periplaneta americana, has been identified electrophysiologically and examined by scanning electron microscopy. It appears basiconic and has a characteristic cuticular apparatus; a mushroom-shaped inner stem and a non-perforated outer wall. The head of the inner stem, which is a cap of about 0.5 m diameter, protrudes from the distal margin of the outer wall. The inner stem is not perforated, though in some cases a tiny hollow is observed in the apex of the cap. This kind of cuticular apparatus is not found in other sensilla and may be modality-specific to hygro- and/or thermoreception. Summary The sensillum coelocapitulum, a hygro- and thermoreceptive sensillum of the honey bee, Apis mellifera, was investigated by electron microscopy. The cuticular apparatus of the sensillum is a mushroomshaped protrusion, devoid of pores, set in a narrow cylindrical pit positioned centrally within a cuticular, shallow depression. There may be three or four receptor cells. Three receptor cells have unbranched sensory cilia, containing densely packed microtubules, which extend distally into the cuticular apparatus and completely fill its cavity. These connecting cilia are of the usual 9+0 type. The fourth receptor, if present, has a thin sensory cilium which terminates beneath the cuticular apparatus. Its connecting cilium has armed outer doublets. The outer cavity is formed by two enveloping cells and is completely sealed off. Lipid deposits are present within the cavity and the tormogen cell. The thecogen cell has scolopale rod-like structures around the inner cavity. Features common to the insect hygro- and thermoreceptive sensilla are discussed in comparison with those of other insects.  相似文献

The fine structure of coeloconic sensilla of Bombyx mori was studied in cryofixed specimens. These sensilla belong to the category of double-walled wall-pore sensilla. The pegs are approximately 10 mum long, located in pits on the dorsal side of the antennal branches, and longitudinally grooved in their distal half (grooved surface approximately 30 mum(2)). The central lumen contains the outer dendritic segments of usually five receptor cells, and is surrounded by up to 15 partially fused cuticular fingers. The peripheral lumina of these cuticular fingers are filled with material resembling wax-canal filaments. Radial spoke channels ( approximately 600 per peg), each 10-20 nm wide, connect the central lumen with the longitudinal groove channels. Groove and spoke channels are assumed to mediate the transport of odorant molecules from the outer epicuticular surface layers to the sensory dendrites. Thus the double-walled wall-pore sensilla represent a bauplan essentially different from single-walled wall-pore sensilla; the reason, however, why the two types are found together throughout the insect orders remains enigmatic. Other peculiar features of the coeloconic sensilla of the silkmoth are invaginations of the outer dendritic segments and direct contacts between the receptor cell somata. The latter may be the structural correlate to electrophysiological observations indicative of peripheral interaction between the receptor neurons. All three auxiliary cells have elaborately folded apical plasma membranes studded with portasomes and associated with an abundance of mitochondria; basally they often contact tracheal branches. As compared to the auxiliary cells of the single-walled olfactory sensilla of the same species, all the mentioned features are much more prominent and hint to a higher ion pumping activity at the border to the sensillum-lymph cavities.  相似文献

The chemoreceptors of Limulus polyphemus (L.) are polyneuronal sensilla found in the spines of the coxal gnathobases of each walking leg, the spines of the chilarial appendages, and the chelae of all the limbs. Each sensillum contains 6–15 bipolar sensory cells that share a single pore in the cuticle. The dendrites of the sensory cells of each sensillum course to the cuticle together. These attenuate sharply and enter a canal in the cuticle as a very narrow terminal thread. The dendrites retain their identity in the thread, but with the light microscope, they are usually not visible individually. Each thread, consisting of 6–15 dendrites, is accompanied to the cuticular surface by a cuticular tubule found within the canal. The chemoreceptor sensilla of the gnathobase, chilarium, and chela, the temperature organs of Patten, and the flabellar receptor organs all have the same basic organization. In general this is the same structural plan shown by chemoreceptors of other arthropods. Several different mechanisms of peripheral physiological interaction among receptor cells are possible with a sensillum organization like that described here for Limulus.  相似文献

Each chemoreceptor sensillum of Limulus polyphemus consists of 6–15 bipolar neurosensory cells with distal processes confined within a single cuticular tubule as they extend to the outside environment. The cuticular tubule, which is enveloped by the cuticulo-tubal cell, opens proximally into a fluid-filled extracellular space through which the dendrite passes before entering the cuticular tubule. Between the neurosensory cells are one to three microvillar cells also exposed to the extracellular space. This space is enclosed by a sheath cell extending proximally from the inner opening of the cuticular tubule and enveloping the proximal portions of the dendrites, the distal portions of the microvillar cells, as well as the distal portion of some neurosensory cell bodies. Most of the remaining portions of the neurosensory cells and microvillar cells are enveloped by neuroglia. Tight junctions occur between the distal portions of the dendrites in or near the cuticular tubule. Each dendrite has a cilium-like segment located where it traverses the extracellular space with a 9 + 0 pattern of fibers. Septuplelayered junctions occur among the proximal portions of some dendrites and some neurosensory cell bodies of the same sensillum. The subjacent processes of the sensillum frequently course proximally as isolated axons before joining nerve bundles. In the chilarial and gnathobasal chemoreceptors these nerve bundles course proximally to neuropile clumps of a peripheral nerve plexus. The presence of numerous synaptic vesicles in the neuropiles suggests that chemical transmission may occur among “en passant” synapses formed by the axons. Proximally the neuropiles are joined to the central nervous system by relatively long nerves.  相似文献

Morphology and distributional patterns of antenna1 sensilla were compared between four species in three genera of Sphecidae. Sensilla placodea have plates that are raised to resemble low domes in Argogorytes mystaceus and A. fargei or low pegs in Bembix rostrata and Cerceris rybyensis . Sensilla basiconica occur in both sexes of Bembix and Cerceris , but, similarly to Apidae ( s. laf .), only in females of Argogorytes . The antennae of the two species of Argogorytes differ primarily in being larger in A. mysfaceus , thus permitting space for more sensilla. In Bembix rostrata , the male antennae are adapted to function as 'gripping' organs.  相似文献

In order to obtain direct information of stimulus dynamics perceived by a male moth under field conditions a portable device was constructed which enables continuous recording of responses from individual pheromone receptors. The device is suitable for tip recording by means of micro-knives as well as for recording with tungsten electrodes making it applicable for a wide range of insects. A micro thermistor air velocity sensor is placed within 2 mm from the preparation to record the momentary air flow. The signal conditioning electronic circuits are battery powered, and the signals can be stored on a portable tape recorder. Field recordings were made from individual male antennal pheromone receptors ofAegeria myopaeformis andAdoxophyes orana. In all recordings the instantaneous firing frequency of the receptor cells was strongly modulated by the air velocity. Analysis of the data may provide information about the average pheromone concentration and the fine structure of pheromone plumes under various conditions.  相似文献

The plasticity of sensory perception is provided partially by modulation of receptor cells. The electrical activity of American cockroach chemoreceptor cells in response to sex pheromone was measured under the influence of octopamine treatment and tracheal anoxia. Both experimental procedures caused decreased electroantennograms but affected spike activity differently: octopamine treatment increased firing rate, whereas anoxia decreased it. Spike frequency under octopamine treatment was elevated in response to pheromone stimulation and at background activity. Experiments with perfusion of isolated antennae showed a direct effect of octopamine on spike activity of pheromone sensilla, and excluded the possibility of indirect effects via octopamine-dependent release of other biologically active substances. The suggested mechanism of octopamine action is receptor cell membrane depolarization.  相似文献

Summary The receptor cells in a poreless sensillum on the antenna ofCarausius morosus were examined electrophysiologically. Two of the units are antagonistic regarding humidity, one responding with an increase in impulse frequency to rising humidity (moistair unit) and the other to falling humidity (dry-air unit). Another reacts to falling temperature with a rise in impulse frequency (cold unit). In some cases responses from a fourth unit were also present. Its modality is uncertain. Summary In an effort to learn about its possible significance for transduction processes the receptor lymph of the spider slit sensillum was collected from in vivo preparations. Its elemental contents were then analyzed by X-ray microanalysis with an emphasis on Na and K, i.e. the cations most widely involved in excitation processes. The ultrastructure of a well studied insect chemosensory unit is presented in this report. Two separate lumina are present in this chemosensory unit, the trichogen and sensillar lumina. The fluid within the trichogen lumen exclusively bathes the dendritic terminals, and may be involved with the reception and/or modulation of environmental stimuli. Cytoplasmic extensions of the trichogen cell which line the trichogen lumen may be involved in the production of the cuticular sheath. The sensillar lumen is bordered by the tormogen and a sleeve cell, and is continuous with the unoccupied channel of the setal shaft. Functions for the various cellular components of the blowfly chemoreceptor sensillum are offered.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A technique is described for averaging the electrophysiological responses of single olfactory sensilla when repeatedly stimulated with the same odour. This enables measurements of electrophysiological responses to be interpreted in a way not normally possible because of the highly variable nature of the individual responses of sensory cells. When the antennal receptors of males of Epiphyas postvittana are stimulated with a single pheromone component, it is shown that the responses contain sufficient information to detect readily both the onset and removal of a stimulus and also a doubling or halving in the concentration of the pheromone. Significant changes in the spontaneous activity of cells following stimulation are also described.  相似文献

The development of diet-induced phenotypic differences in numbers of sensilla on the antennae of the grasshopper Schistocerca americana was studied using the exuviae produced at each molt. This made it possible to follow changes within an individual insect. In the first instar, insects had similar numbers of four sensillum types: uniporous trichoid sensilla, coeloconic sensilla, and large and small multiporous basiconic sensilla. Rearing on lettuce resulted in sixth instars with greater numbers of three sensillum types than siblings reared on an artificial diet. The first statistically significant differences between treatments in numbers of trichoid sensilla and large basiconic sensilla occurred in the third and fourth instars, respectively. No major reductions in sensillum numbers occurred at any time and the phenotypic differences resulted from differences in the numbers added at each molt.  相似文献

The pheromone-detecting sensilla placodea are significantly more numerous than other sensory structures in the antennae of the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Their abundance in males is nearly twice of that in females, showing a clear sexual dimorphism. Externally, they have a tortoise shell-like round cuticular plate containing a few polygonal plates separated by narrow ridges. Internally, they house two long dendrites that branch and terminate near fine cuticular pores. They have a system of two bipolar neurons accompanied by three enveloping cells, resembling sensilla trichodea in moths. The conspicuous difference with the latter is that the sensillum-lymph cavity near the outer cuticle is funnel-shaped, into which the tormogen cell projects numerous microvilli whose tips approach the terminal branches of the dendrites.  相似文献

Summary The hair regeneration of a chemotactile sensillum was studied in the sunspiderGluvia during moulting. The sensilla in the old cuticle remain connected to the epidermis by dendrites which extend outwards during apolysis. The trichogen cells forming the new hairshaft in the exuvial space grow along the chemoreceptive dendrites, while the mechanoreceptive dendrites run separately. Morphogenetic aspects are discussed in comparison to results from other arthropods.  相似文献

A dual function of the Notch gene in Drosophila sensillum development   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
We have investigated the function of the neurogenic gene Notch (N) during development of the adult sensilla of Drosophila. Heat pulses were applied to flies carrying the temperature-sensitive Notch allele Nts1 at different larval and pupal stages. We can show that the reduction of Notch+ function during a short interval prior to the onset of sensillum precursor division, resulting from a heat pulse between 0 and 14 hr after puparium formation (apf), leads to an increase in microchaete precursors at the expense of epidermal cells. The structure and cellular composition of the sensilla produced by these supernumerary precursors are normal. Later heat pulses which include the interval immediately after sensillum precursor division (14-20 hr apf) lead, among the progeny of the sensillum precursors, to a hyperplasia of sensory neurons, at the expense of accessory cells. The resulting "sensilla" consist of neurons only and lack the external cuticular structures (i.e., shaft, socket). These results demonstrate that similar mechanisms both of which involve the function of the Notch gene may be operating to sort out (premitotic) sensillum precursors from epidermal precursors and (postmitotic) sensory neurons from accessory cells. They further show that in postmitotic sensillum cells the differentiative fate is not yet irreversibly fixed, but presumably requires cell-cell interaction to become established.  相似文献

Utilizing horseradish peroxidase as a tracer protein, it is shown that trichogen and tormogen cells have a secretory function. Protein tracer from the haemolymph enters these cells by endocytosis and is transported to the sensillum liquor cavity by transport vacuoles and multivesicular bodies. It is also suggested that closely associated pigment cells may be involved in macromolecular transport.  相似文献
