Lead tolerance and accumulation in five willow clones were investigated using a nutrient film technique. Plants were exposed to 0, 48, 121, 169, or 241 microM Pb for 14 days. Tolerance indices (TI) and critical toxicity thresholds (EC50) were determined for five willow clones. SX61 had the highest TI values (92%) in the 48 and 121 microM Pb treatments, as well as the highest EC50 threshold values (70.5 microM for roots, 155.9 microM for aboveground tissue), indications of a high degree of tolerance to Pb. This clone also developed the highest biomass of all the clones tested. We found significant variation in willows' lead accumulation. The highest Pb content in roots (24 mg plant(-1)) and aboveground tissue (7.6 mg plant(-1)) was recorded in the 48 microM Pb treatment in SX61. Based on high biomass, TI, ECso, and Pb content in plant tissues, SX61 holds promise for phytoextraction of lead.  相似文献

Indian mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.) is a promising plant species for phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted soils. However, genetic variability of metal tolerance in Indian mustard has not been studied. We evaluated intraspecific variation of Cd tolerance of this species by screening 64 varieties in hydroponics. The tolerance index (TI), calculated as percentage of root length of Cd-treated (7 μM CdCl2) over untreated control seedlings, significantly varied from 34 to 79%, depending on the variety. Information about phenotypic and economic traits of the studied varieties was taken from the literature and subjected to a cluster analysis. The varieties were distributed into three clusters and most of the varieties characterized by the highest TI values (TI > 65%) were grouped together in one cluster. Moreover, TI negatively correlated with the following characteristics: yellow seed colour (R = −0.35, P = 0.005), total oil content (R = −0.33, P = 0.008), oleic acid (R = −0.25, P = 0.047) and linoleic acid (R = −0.36, P = 0.004) contents in seeds. The results showed the presence of significant variability for Cd tolerance in Indian mustard. The knowledge about correlations between Cd tolerance and phenotypic characteristics of plants might be utilized for rapid selection of cultivars to be used for phytoremediation of polluted soils.  相似文献

Plant growth and lead (Pb) uptake by seven willow varieties were investigated in pot and field experiments to assess the suitability of willows for phytoremediation of Pb at heavily contaminated sites such as skeet ranges. Differences in uptake and translocation of Pb in Salix were observed between pot and field experiments. In the pot experiment, willows grown in Pb-contaminated field soil for 6 months showed tolerance to very high soil Pb concentration (21,360 mg kg(-1)), and with the addition of EDTA were able to take up and translocate more than 1000 mg kg(-1) Pb into above-ground tissues. In the field experiment, all willow varieties showed tolerance to heterogeneously high soil Pb concentrations. Plants were also able to take up and translocate Pb into above-ground tissues. However, after 4.5 months, the lead concentration in the above-ground tissues of willows grown in soil amended with EDTA was less than 200 mg kg(-1). The results from the pot experiment suggest that Salix varieties have the potential to take up and translocate significant amounts of Pb into above-ground tissues using EDTA. However, to verify the phytoextraction abilities of Salix in the field, additional research is needed.  相似文献

Contamination of surface soils with lead (Pb) is a global concern due to the release of hazardous materials containing the metal element. In order to explore ways to remediate contaminated soils with less impact on environment and costs, this study aimed at screening ornamental plant species exposed to Pb gradient in spiked soils for Pb phytoextraction. Twenty-one ornamental plant species that currently grow in Pakistan, were selected to assess their potential for Pb accumulation. Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the accumulative properties of the different plant species in unspiked control (Pb = 0) and spiked soils with different levels of Pb at 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 mg Pb kg?1 of soil. Biotranslocation factor (TF), Enrichment factor (EF) and Bioconcentration factor (CF) were calculated to assess the phytoremediation potential of tested plant species after seven weeks of exposure. Out of 21 plant species, Pelargonium hortorum and Mesembryanthemum criniflorum performed better and accumulated more than 1000 mg Pb kg?1 of shoot dry biomass when they were grown in 500, 1000 and 1500 mg Pb kg?1 contaminated soils. Both plants had no significant (P < 0.05) variation in the total dry biomass with increasing soil Pb concentration indicating a high tolerance to Pb. Considering the capacity of Pb accumulation, total dry biomass, TF, EF &; CF indices, Pelargonium hortorum and Mesembryanthemum criniflorum could be considered as Pb hyperaccumulators and could have the potential to be used in phytoremediation.  相似文献

Two ornamental plants of Althaea rosea Cav. and Malva crispa L. were exposed to various concentrations of lead (Pb) (0, 50, 100, 200 and 500 mg·kg?1) for 70 days to evaluate the accumulating potential and the tolerance characteristics. The results showed that both plant species grown normally under Pb stress, and A. rosea had a higher tolerance than M. crispa, while M. crispa had a higher ability in Pb accumulation than A. rosea. Besides, lower Pb concentration (50 mg·kg?1) stimulated the shoot biomass in both plant species. Pb accumulation in plants was consistent with the increase of Pb levels, and the main accumulation sites were the roots and the older leaves. In addition, the photosynthetic pigments content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were influenced by Pb stress. In such case, both of the plants could improve the activities of antioxidant enzymes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and the contents of the total soluble sugar and soluble protein, which reached the highest value at Pb 100 mg·kg?1, as well as the accumulation of the total thiols (T-SH) and non-protein thiols (NP-SH) to adapt to Pb stress. Thus, it provides the theoretical basis and possibility for ornamental plants of A. rosea and M. crispa in phytoremediation of Pb contaminated areas.  相似文献

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution has become a serious environmental threat, particularly in developing countries such as China. In response, there is a growing interest in phytoremediation studies to identify plant species as designated hyperaccumulators of PTEs in polluted soils. Poinsettia was selected as a candidate species for phytoremediation of six PTEs (Zn, Pb, Hg, Cr, As, Cu) in this study. A pot cultivation experiment (randomized incomplete block experimental design with 5 treatments and 4 blocks) was conducted using contaminated soils gathered from an industrial area in southcentral China. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF), translocation factor (TF), and bioconcentration factor were analyzed to determine the phytoremediation potential of poinsettia potted in different ratios of polluted soils. One-way ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey’s test showed that poinsettia had significant uptake of Zn, Pb, Cu (BAF < 1 and TF < 1, p < 0.05) and Hg (BAF < 1 and TF > 1, p < 0.05). Poinsettias can therefore effectively accumulate Zn, Pb, and Cu in their lateral roots while extracting and transferring Hg into their leaves. Moreover, poinsettia exhibited tolerance towards As and Cr. Interestingly, it was also observed that PTEs can inhibit the height of potted poinsettia at a certain concentration.  相似文献

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective and minimally invasive technology to cleanse soils contaminated with heavy metals. However, few plant species are suitable for phytoremediation of metals such as cadmium (Cd). Genetic engineering offers a powerful tool to generate plants that can hyperaccumulate Cd. An Arabidopsis CAX1 mutant (CAXcd), which confers enhanced Cd transport in yeast, was ectopically expressed in petunia to evaluate whether the CAXcd expression would enhance Cd tolerance and accumulation in planta. The CAXcd-expressing petunia plants showed significantly greater Cd tolerance and accumulation than the controls. After being treated with either 50 or 100 μM CdCl2 for 6 weeks, the CAXcd-expressing plants showed more vigorous growth compared with controls, and the transgenic plants accumulated significantly more Cd (up to 2.5-fold) than controls. Moreover, the accumulation of Cd did not affect the development and morphology of the CAXcd-expressing petunia plants until the flowering and ultimately the maturing of seeds. Therefore, petunia has the potential to serve as a model species for developing herbaceous, ornamental plants for phytoremediation.  相似文献

Plants of the Cerrado have shown some potential for restoration and/or phytoremediation projects due to their ability to grow in and tolerate acidic soils rich in metals. The aim of this study is to evaluate the tolerance and accumulation of metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in five native tree species of the Brazilian Cerrado (Copaifera langsdorffii, Eugenia dysenterica, Inga laurina, Cedrela fissilis, Handroanthus impetiginosus) subjected to three experiments with contaminated soils obtained from a zinc processing industry (S1, S2, S3) and control soil (S0). The experimental design was completely randomized (factorial 5 × 4 × 3) and conducted in a greenhouse environment during a 90-day experimentation time. The plant species behavior was assessed by visual symptoms of toxicity, tolerance index (TI), translocation factor (TF), and bioaccumulation factor (BF). C. fissilis has performed as a Zn accumulator by the higher BFs obtained in the experiments, equal to 3.72, 0.88, and 0.41 for S1, S2, and S3 respectively. This species had some ability of uptake control as a defense mechanism in high stress conditions with the best behavior for phytoremediation and high tolerance to contamination. With economical and technical benefits, this study may support a preliminary analysis necessary for using native tree species in environmental projects.  相似文献

Polluted agricultural soils are a serious problem for food safety, with phytoremediation being the most favorable alternative from the environmental perspective. However, this methodology is generally time-consuming and requires the cessation of agriculture. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate two potential phytoextractor plants (the native species Bidens pilosa and Tagetes minuta) co-cropped with lettuce growing on agricultural lead-polluted soils. The concentrations of Pb, as well as of other metals, were investigated in the phytoextractors, crop species, and in soils, with the potential risk to the health of consumers being estimated. The soil parameters pH, EC, organic matter percentage and bioavailable lead showed a direct relationship with the accumulation of Pb in roots. In addition, the concentration of Pb in roots of native species was closely related to Fe (B. pilosa, r = 0.81; T. minuta r = 0.75), Cu (T. minuta, r = 0.93), Mn (B. pilosa, r = 0.89) and Zn (B. pilosa, r = 0.91; T. minuta, r = 0.91). Our results indicate that the interaction between rhizospheres increased the phytoextraction of lead, which was accompanied by an increase in the biomass of the phytoextractor species. However, the consumption of lettuce still revealed a toxicological risk from Pb in all treatments.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) improve the tolerance of hosting plants to arsenic (As) in contaminated soils. This work assessed the phytoprotective effect of Glomus etunicatum, Acaulospora morrowiae, Gigaspora gigantea, and Acaulospora sp. on four leguminous species (Acacia mangium, Crotalaria juncea, Enterolobium contortisiliquum, and Stizolobium aterrimum) in an As-contaminated soil from a gold mining area. AMF root colonization, biomass production, As and P accumulation, as well as arsenic translocation index (TI) from roots to shoots were measured. The AMF phytoprotective effect was assessed by the P/As ratio and the activity of plant antioxidant enzymes. The AMF colonization ranged from 24 to 28%. In general, all leguminous species had low As TI when inoculated with AMF species. Inoculation of C. juncea with Acaulospora sp. improved significantly As accumulation in roots, and decreased the activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), highlighting its phytoprotective effect and the potential use of this symbiosis for phytoremediation of As-contaminated soils. However, S. aterrimum has also shown a potential for phytoremediation irrespectively of AMF inoculation. APX was a good indicator of the phytoprotective effect against As contamination in C. juncea and A. mangium. In general P/As ratio in shoots was the best indicator of the phytoprotective effect of all AMF species in all plant species.  相似文献

Plants growing on metalliferous soils from abandoned mines are unique because of their ability to cope with high metal levels in soil. In this study, we characterized plants and soils from an abandoned Pb-Zn mine in the Basque Country (northern Spain). Soil in this area proved to be deficient in major macronutrients and to contain toxic levels of Cd, Pb, and Zn. Spontaneously growing native plants (belonging to 31 species, 28 genera, and 15 families) were botanically identified. Plant shoots and rhizosphere soil were sampled at several sites in the mine, and analyzed for Pb, Zn and Cd concentration. Zinc showed the highest concentrations in shoots, followed by Pb and Cd. Highest Zn concentrations in shoots were found in the Zn-Cd hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens (mean = 18,254 mg Zn kg(-1) DW). Different metal tolerance and accumulation patterns were observed among the studied plant species, thus offering a wide germplasm assortment for the suitable selection of phytoremediation technologies. This study highlights the importance of preserving metalliferous environments as they shelter a unique and highly valuable metallicolous biodiversity.

In our recent paper in the Plant Journal, we demonstrated that Arabidopsis thaliana acyl-CoA-binding protein ACBP1 binds lead [Pb(II)], its mRNA is induced by Pb(II)-treatment and transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing ACBP1 are conferred Pb(II) tolerance and accumulate Pb(II). Our results suggest that ACBP1 overexpressors are potentially useful for applications in phytoremediation. Since very few plant proteins that bind and accumulate Pb(II) have been identified, our findings provide a feasible method in phytoremediating Pb(II).Key words: acyl-CoA-binding proteins, heavy metals, Pb(II) accumulation, phytoremediation, plasma membrane  相似文献

From a number of wild plant species growing on soils highly contaminated by heavy metals in Eastern Spain, Nicotiana glauca R. Graham (shrub tobacco) was selected for biotechnological modification, because it showed the most appropriate properties for phytoremediation. This plant has a wide geographic distribution, is fast-growing with a high biomass, and is repulsive to herbivores. Following Agrobacterium mediated transformation, the induction and overexpression of a wheat gene encoding phytochelatin synthase (TaPCS1) in this particular plant greatly increased its tolerance to metals such as Pb and Cd, developing seedling roots 160% longer than wild type plants. In addition, seedlings of transformed plants grown in mining soils containing high levels of Pb (1572 ppm) accumulated double concentration of this heavy metal than wild type. These results indicate that the transformed N. glauca represents a highly promising new tool for use in phytoremediation efforts.  相似文献

Five different genotypic cultivars of Ipomoea aquatica commonly grown in Southeast Asia were cultivated to investigate their accumulation variation of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and their potential for phytoremediation of three soils contaminated with DBP (4.5, 10.3 and 22.5 mg kg?1). The results indicated different cultivar tolerance to DBP. DBP concentration in the shoots of the cultivars and residual DBP concentration in the soil were proportional to initial DBP concentrations in the soil and significantly different with different genotypic cultivars, indicating that the removal of DBP is cultivar-specific. DBP removal in the soil with indigenous DBP was higher than that in freshly DBP-spiked soils. The cultivars of local white-skin I. aquatica (cultivar V5) and Taiwan filiform-leaf I. aquatica (cultivar V1) presented the highest phytoremediation potential in the soil containing indigenous DBP and in freshly DBP-spiked soil, respectively. The translocation factor (TF, DBP concentration ratio of the shoots to the roots) and bioconcentration factor (BCF, DBP concentration ratio of the plant to the soil) also significantly varied with different cultivars, and they did not follow distribution profiles correlated to DBP removal indicating that phytoextraction was not the dominant DBP removal mechanism. Finally, the potential ability of different cultivars of enhancing biodegradation varied widely.  相似文献

The effects of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on plant growth and Cd/Pb accumulation was investigated on seedlings of three plant species including Brassica napus L., Helianthus annus L. and Cannabis sativa L. The experiment consisted of MWCNTs on three concentration levels (0, 10, 50 mg/L) and 200 μM CdCl2 or 500 μM Pb(NO3)2. MWCNTs application effectively improved root and shoot growth inhibited by Cd and Pb salts. In B. napus, total chlorophyll (Chl) content increased by both MWCNTs 10 and 50 mg/L exposure under cadmium or lead stress. MWCNT 10 mg/L mitigated the deleterious effects of Cd ions on total chlorophyll content of H. annus and C. sativa. Wherease higher concentration of MWCNTs decreased Chl content under either Cd or Pb treatments on sunflower seedlings. MWCNT10 effectivly raised cadmium accumulation in seedlings of all three species. MWCNT10 and 50 mg/L also caused higher Pb accumulation in canola and cannabis seedlings, respectively. Based on the results, it seems that the effects of MWCNTs on growth parameters and heavy metal accumulation in plant seedlings is strongly depends on heavy metal type, MWCNTs concentration and plant species.  相似文献

In continental Europe, the heavy metal hyperaccumulator Thlaspi caerulescens occurs both on heavy-metal polluted soils (subsp. calaminare) and on soils with normal heavy metal content (subsp. caerulescens). In order to assess the extent and partitioning of variation in heavy metal tolerance and foliar mineral composition, twelve families from two populations of each subspecies were grown in pots in four soil treatments differing in heavy metal (Zn, Pb) and macronutrient concentrations. The two subspecies differed systematically in many respects. Subsp. calaminare had a higher survival at high levels of heavy metals and a higher tolerance index in all treatments. It also had three times lower foliar zinc and lead concentrations when grown at moderate levels of heavy metals. This, together with a negative correlation of foliar Pb concentration with growth in subsp. caerulescens, suggests that heavy metal accumulation per se is not a mechanism of tolerance in this species. Variation among families within populations accounted for a larger proportion of total variance in growth and mineral composition than variation between populations. Additionally, within population variation in heavy metal tolerance and accumulation was significantly lower in subsp. calaminare. This suggests that, adding to a background constitutive tolerance at the species level, natural selection has increased heavy metal tolerance in metallicolous populations of Thlaspi caerulescens.  相似文献

The rapid development of innovative and highly specialized ecotechnologies targeting site-specific problems and pollutants requires precisely tailored designs. The proper selection of remedial plant genotypes that possess the correct structure and function to effectively address a specific problem is a vital step in the design of ecological engineering applications because numerous essential traits must be evaluated to maximize the effectiveness of each installation. Knowledge about the biology of willow species from decades of research as a perennial biomass crop has recently been applied to resolving an array of environmental and ecological problems. Here, essential characteristics of Salix varieties that are pertinent to ecological engineering are described and related to particular ecotechnologies. We identified thirty-six agronomical, physiological, and ecological attributes of willow that provide a framework for species selection and assist in the identification of site-specific functional types of willows for land reclamation, phytoremediation, bioengineering, and agroforestry.  相似文献

Plants produce volatile compounds known to influence insect preferences for oviposition and feeding. To examine whether volatile leaf compounds are correlated with the herbivorous insect community, we analyzed volatile compounds in leaves from three co-occurring willow species, Salix serissaefolia, S. eriocarpa, and S. integra, and investigated their associated insect communities in 3 months across different years. The gas chromatographic profiles of volatile compounds were highly specific to each willow species and remained constant in the study months. In a comparison between the chemical composition of the volatile compounds and the taxon composition of the insect communities, dissimilarity patterns in chemical composition among the three willow species were very close to those in herbivorous insect communities. These findings indicate that willow leaves produce specific volatiles that are highly correlated with the community structure of herbivorous insects associated with them. Abstract

This study assessed the effects of Pb (0, 200, 500, 1000?mg kg?1) and Cd (0, 5, 15, 30, 50?mg kg?1) on photosynthesis in Amaranthus spinosus (A. spinosus), as well as the potential for phytoremediation by pot-culture experiment. Exposure to Pb/Cd produced a concentration-dependent decrease in biomass and all photosynthesis parameters, except for non-photochemical quenching, which increased with the metal concentration. The metals accumulated more in roots compared to shoots. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of Pb was <1 in shoots at all Pb levels, whereas the BCF was <1 in roots at all but the lowest concentration of Pb. Roots extracted Cd from soil at all treatments. The translocation factor of Cd was larger than that of Pb suggesting that Cd is more mobile than Pb in A. spinosus. Amaranthus spinosus displays a high tolerance for both Pb and Cd with regards to growth and photochemical efficiency, but it is more sensitive to Cd than Pb. Amaranthus spinosus accumulates Pb and Cd primarily in the roots and Cd is more bioconcentrated and translocated in comparison to Pb. This investigation shows that A. spinosus has good potential for phytoremediation of soils contaminated by low levels of Cd and Pb.  相似文献
