To determine how increased atmospheric CO2 will affect the physiology of coppiced plants, sprouts originating from two hybrid poplar clones ( Populus trichocarpa × P. deltoides - Beaupre and P. deltoides × P. nigra - Robusta) were grown in open-top chambers containing ambient or elevated (ambient + 360 μmol mol−1) CO2 concentration. The effects of elevated CO2 concentration on leaf photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, dark respiration, carbohydrate concentration and nitrogen concentration were measured. Furthermore, dark respiration of leaves was partitioned into growth and maintenance components by regressing specific respiration rate vs specific growth rate. Sprouts of both clones exposed to CO2 enrichment showed no indication of photosynthetic down-regulation. During reciprocal gas exchange measurements, CO2 enrichment significantly increased photosynthesis of all sprouts by approximately 60% ( P < 0.01) on both an early and late season sampling date, decreased stomatal conductance of all sprouts by 10% ( P < 0.04) on the early sampling date and nonsignificantly decreased dark respiration by an average of 11%. Growth under elevated CO2 had no consistent effect on foliar sugar concentration but significantly increased foliar starch by 80%. Respiration rate was highly correlated with both specific growth rate and percent nitrogen. Long-term CO2 enrichment did not significantly affect the maintenance respiration coefficient or the growth respiration coefficient. Carbon dioxide enrichment affected the physiology of the sprouts the same way it affected these plants before they were coppiced.  相似文献

A poplar short rotation coppice (SRC) grown for the production of bioenergy can combine carbon (C) storage with fossil fuel substitution. Here, we summarize the responses of a poplar ( Populus ) plantation to 6 yr of free air CO2 enrichment (POP/EUROFACE consisting of two rotation cycles). We show that a poplar plantation growing in nonlimiting light, nutrient and water conditions will significantly increase its productivity in elevated CO2 concentrations ([CO2]). Increased biomass yield resulted from an early growth enhancement and photosynthesis did not acclimate to elevated [CO2]. Sufficient nutrient availability, increased nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and the large sink capacity of poplars contributed to the sustained increase in C uptake over 6 yr. Additional C taken up in high [CO2] was mainly invested into woody biomass pools. Coppicing increased yield by 66% and partly shifted the extra C uptake in elevated [CO2] to above-ground pools, as fine root biomass declined and its [CO2] stimulation disappeared. Mineral soil C increased equally in ambient and elevated [CO2] during the 6 yr experiment. However, elevated [CO2] increased the stabilization of C in the mineral soil. Increased productivity of a poplar SRC in elevated [CO2] may allow shorter rotation cycles, enhancing the viability of SRC for biofuel production.  相似文献

The effect of elevated [CO2] on wheat (Triticum aestivum L. Veery 10) productivity was examined by analysing radiation capture, canopy quantum yield, canopy carbon use efficiency, harvest index and daily C gain. Canopies were grown at either 330 or 1200 μ mol mol–1[CO2] in controlled environments, where root and shoot C fluxes were monitored continuously from emergence to harvest. A rapidly circulating hydroponic solution supplied nutrients, water and root zone oxygen. At harvest, dry mass predicted from gas exchange data was 102·8 ± 4·7% of the observed dry mass in six trials. Neither radiation capture efficiency nor carbon use efficiency were affected by elevated [CO2], but yield increased by 13% due to a sustained increase in canopy quantum yield. CO2 enrichment increased root mass, tiller number and seed mass. Harvest index and chlorophyll concentration were unchanged, but CO2 enrichment increased average life cycle net photosynthesis (13%, P < 0·05) and root respiration (24%, P < 0·05). These data indicate that plant communities adapt to CO2 enrichment through changes in C allocation. Elevated [CO2] increases sink strength in optimal environments, resulting in sustained increases in photosynthetic capacity, canopy quantum yield and daily C gain throughout the life cycle.  相似文献

The effects of elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide and ozone on diurnal patterns of photosynthesis have been investigated in field-grown spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum ). Plants cultivated under realistic agronomic conditions, in open-top chambers, were exposed from emergence to harvest to reciprocal combinations of two carbon dioxide and two ozone treatments: [CO2] at ambient (380 μmol mol−1, seasonal mean) or elevated (692 μmol mol−1) levels, [O3] at ambient (27 nmol mol−1, 7 hr seasonal mean) or elevated (61 nmol mol−1) levels. After anthesis, diurnal measurements were made of flag-leaf gas-exchange and in vitro Rubisco activity and content. Elevated [CO2] resulted in an increase in photoassimilation rate and a loss of excess Rubisco activity. Elevated [O3] caused a loss of Rubisco and a decline in photoassimilation rate late in flag-leaf development. Elevated [CO2] ameliorated O3 damage. The mechanisms of amelioration included a protective stomatal restriction of O3 flux to the mesophyll, and a compensatory effect of increased substrate on photoassimilation and photosynthetic control. However, the degree of protection and compensation appeared to be affected by the natural seasonal and diurnal variations in light, temperature and water status.  相似文献

To test the prediction that elevated CO2 increases the maximum leaf area index (LAI) through a stimulation of photosynthesis, we exposed model herbaceous communities to two levels of CO2 crossed with two levels of soil fertility. Elevated CO2 stimulated the initial rate of canopy development and increased cumulative LAI integrated over the growth period, but it had no effect on the maximum LAI. In contrast to CO2, increased soil nutrient availability caused a substantial increase in maximum LAI. Elevated CO2 caused a slight increase in leaf area and nitrogen allocated to upper canopy layers and may have stimulated leaf turnover deep in the canopy. Gas exchange measurements of intact communities made near the time of maximum LAI indicated that soil nutrient availability, but not CO2 enrichment, caused a substantial stimulation of net ecosystem carbon exchange. These data do not support our prediction of a higher maximum LAI by elevated CO2 because the initial stimulation of LAI diminished by the end of the growth period. However, early in development, leaf area and carbon assimilation of communities may have been greatly enhanced. These results suggest that the rate of canopy development in annual communities may be accelerated with future increases in atmospheric CO2 but that maximum LAI is set by soil fertility.  相似文献

1. The photosynthetic response to elevated CO2 and nutrient stress was investigated in Agrostis capillaris, Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens grown in an open-top chamber facility for 2 years under two nutrient regimes. Acclimation was evaluated by measuring the response of light-saturated photosynthesis to changes in the substomatal CO2 concentration.
2. Growth at elevated CO2 resulted in reductions in apparent Rubisco activity in vivo in all three species, which were associated with reductions of total leaf nitrogen content on a unit area basis for A. capillaris and L. perenne . Despite this acclimation, photosynthesis was significantly higher at elevated CO2 for T. repens and A. capillaris , the latter exhibiting the greatest increase of carbon uptake at the lowest nutrient supply.
3. The photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency (the rate of carbon assimilation per unit leaf nitrogen) increased at elevated CO2, not purely owing to higher values of photosynthesis at elevated CO2, but also as a result of lower leaf nitrogen contents.
4. Contrary to most previous studies, this investigation indicates that elevated CO2 can stimulate photosynthesis under a severely limited nutrient supply. Changes in photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency may be a critical determinant of competition within low nutrient ecosystems and low input agricultural systems.  相似文献

Because of the economical relevance of sugarcane and its high potential as a source of biofuel, it is important to understand how this crop will respond to the foreseen increase in atmospheric [CO2]. The effects of increased [CO2] on photosynthesis, development and carbohydrate metabolism were studied in sugarcane ( Saccharum ssp.). Plants were grown at ambient (∼370 ppm) and elevated (∼720 ppm) [CO2] during 50 weeks in open-top chambers. The plants grown under elevated CO2 showed, at the end of such period, an increase of about 30% in photosynthesis and 17% in height, and accumulated 40% more biomass in comparison with the plants grown at ambient [CO2]. These plants also had lower stomatal conductance and transpiration rates (−37 and −32%, respectively), and higher water-use efficiency (c.a. 62%). cDNA microarray analyses revealed a differential expression of 35 genes on the leaves (14 repressed and 22 induced) by elevated CO2. The latter are mainly related to photosynthesis and development. Industrial productivity analysis showed an increase of about 29% in sucrose content. These data suggest that sugarcane crops increase productivity in higher [CO2], and that this might be related, as previously observed for maize and sorghum, to transient drought stress.  相似文献

In the CAM plants, Kalanchoë tubiflora (Harvey) Hasset, Sedum morganianum E. Walth and Sedum rubrotinctum R. T. Clausen, the effects of CO2 concentrations on the light-dependent 14C transfer from the nocturnally synthetized [14C]-malic acid to starch have been studied. CO2 concentrations up to 5 × 103 μ1 1–1 did not inhibit this carbon transfer. Higher CO2 concentrations, however, were increasingly inhibitory. At 104 μl 1–1 CO2, the carbon transfer was practically prevented.
The malic acid consumption in the light showed the same response to CO2 concentrations as the [l4C]-transfer. Photosynthesis itself was not inhibited by the CO2 concentrations applied. It is assumed that, during phase III of CAM, light controls the internal CO2 concentration via photosynthesis; and that the internal CO2 concentration then controls the rate of malate decarboxylation.  相似文献

The composition and morphology of leaves exposed to elevated [CO2] usually change so that the leaf nitrogen (N) per unit dry mass decreases and the leaf dry mass per unit area increases. However, at ambient [CO2], leaves with a high leaf dry mass per unit area usually have low leaf N per unit dry mass. Whether the changes in leaf properties induced by elevated [CO2] follow the same overall pattern as that at ambient [CO2] has not previously been addressed. Here we address this issue by using leaf measurements made at ambient [CO2] to develop an empirical model of the composition and morphology of leaves. Predictions from that model are then compared with a global database of leaf measurements made at ambient [CO2]. Those predictions are also compared with measurements showing the impact of elevated [CO2]. In the empirical model both the leaf dry mass and liquid mass per unit area are positively correlated with leaf thickness, whereas the mass of C per unit dry mass and the mass of N per unit liquid mass are constant. Consequently, both the N:C ratio and the surface area:volume ratio of leaves are positively correlated with the liquid content. Predictions from that model were consistent with measurements of leaf properties made at ambient [CO2] from around the world. The changes induced by elevated [CO2] follow the same overall trajectory. It is concluded that elevated [CO2] enhances the rate at which dry matter is accumulated but the overall trajectory of leaf development is conserved.  相似文献

Abstract. There have been seven studies of canopy photosynthesis of plants grown in elevated atmospheric CO2: three of seed crops, two of forage crops and two of native plant ecosystems. Growth in elevated CO2 increased canopy photosynthesis in all cases. The relative effect of CO2 was correlated with increasing temperature: the least stimulation occurred in tundra vegetation grown at an average temperature near 10°C and the greatest in rice grown at 43°C. In soybean, effects of CO2 were greater during leaf expansion and pod fill than at other stages of crop maturation. In the longest running experiment with elevated CO2 treatment to date, monospecific stands of a C3 sedge, Scirpus olneyi (Grey), and a C4 grass, Spartina patens (Ait.) Muhl., have been exposed to twice normal ambient CO2 concentrations for four growing seasons, in open top chambers on a Chesapeake Bay salt marsh. Net ecosystem CO2 exchange per unit green biomass (NCEb) increased by an average of 48% throughout the growing season of 1988, the second year of treatment. Elevated CO2 increased net ecosystem carbon assimilation by 88% in the Scirpus olneyi community and 40% in the Spartina patens community.  相似文献

The effects of CO2 enrichment on growth of Xanthomonas campestris pv. pelargonii and the impact of infection on the photosynthesis and export of attached, intact, 'source' leaves of geranium ( Pelargonium x domesticum, 'Scarlet Orbit Improved' ) are reported. Two experiments were performed, one with plants without flower buds, and another with plants which were flowering. Measurements were made on healthy and diseased leaves at the CO2 levels (35 Pa or 90 Pa) at which the plants were grown. There were no losses of chlorophyll, or any signs of visible chlorosis or necrosis due to infection. Lower numbers of bacteria were found in leaves at high CO2, suggesting growth at elevated CO2 created a less favourable condition in the leaf for bacterial growth. Although high CO2 lowered the bacterial number in infected leaves, reductions in photosynthesis and export were greater than at ambient CO2. The capacity of infected source leaves to export photoassimilates at rates observed in the controls was reduced in both light and darkness. In summary, the severity of infection on source leaf function by the bacteria was increased, rather than reduced by CO2 enrichment, underscoring the need for further assessment of plant diseases and bacterial virulence in plants growing under varying CO2 levels.  相似文献

The temperature dependence of C3 photosynthesis may be altered by the growth environment. The effects of long-term growth in elevated CO2 on photosynthesis temperature response have been investigated in wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) grown in controlled chambers with 370 or 700 μmol mol−1 CO2 from sowing through to anthesis. Gas exchange was measured in flag leaves at ear emergence, and the parameters of a biochemical photosynthesis model were determined along with their temperature responses. Elevated CO2 slightly decreased the CO2 compensation point and increased the rate of respiration in the light and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) Vcmax, although the latter effect was reversed at 15°C. With elevated CO2, Jmax decreased in the 15–25°C temperature range and increased at 30 and 35°C. The temperature response (activation energy) of Vcmax and Jmax increased with growth in elevated CO2. CO2 enrichment decreased the ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP)-limited photosynthesis rates at lower temperatures and increased Rubisco- and RuBP-limited rates at higher temperatures. The results show that the photosynthesis temperature response is enhanced by growth in elevated CO2. We conclude that if temperature acclimation and factors such as nutrients or water availability do not modify or negate this enhancement, the effects of future increases in air CO2 on photosynthetic electron transport and Rubisco kinetics may improve the photosynthetic response of wheat to global warming.  相似文献

We examined how anticipated changes in CO2 concentration and temperature interacted to alter plant growth, harvest characteristics and photosynthesis in two cold-adapted herbaceous perennials, alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L. cv. Arc) and orchard grass ( Dactylis glomerata L. cv. Potomac). Plants were grown at two CO2 concentrations (362 [ambient] and 717 [elevated] μmol mol−1 CO2) and four constant day/night temperatures of 15, 20, 25 and 30°C in controlled environmental chambers. Elevated CO2 significantly increased total plant biomass and protein over a wide range of temperatures in both species. Stimulation of photosynthetic rate, however, was eliminated at the highest growth temperature in M. sativa and relative stimulation of plant biomass and protein at high CO2 declined as temperature increased in both species. Lack of a synergistic effect between temperature and CO2 was unexpected since elevated CO2 reduces the amount of carbon lost via photorespiration and photorespiration increases with temperature. Differences between anticipated stimulatory effects of CO2 and temperature and whole plant single and leaf measurements are discussed. Data from this study suggest that stimulatory effects of atmospheric CO2 on growth and photosynthesis may decline with anticipated increases in global temperature, limiting the degree of carbon storage in these two perennial species.  相似文献

Soybean ( Glycine max cv. Clark) was grown at both ambient (ca 350 μmol mol−1) and elevated (ca 700 μmol mol−1) CO2 concentration at 5 growth temperatures (constant day/night temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C) for 17–22 days after sowing to determine the interaction between temperature and CO2 concentration on photosynthesis (measured as A, the rate of CO2 assimilation per unit leaf area) at both the single leaf and whole plant level. Single leaves of soybean demonstrated increasingly greater stimulation of A at elevated CO2 as temperature increased from 25 to 35°C (i.e. optimal growth rates). At 40°C, primary leaves failed to develop and plants eventually died. In contrast, for both whole plant A and total biomass production, increasing temperature resulted in less stimulation by elevated CO2 concentration. For whole plants, increased CO2 stimulated leaf area more as growth temperature increased. Differences between the response of A to elevated CO2 for single leaves and whole plants may be related to increased self-shading experienced by whole plants at elevated CO2 as temperature increased. Results from the present study suggest that self-shading could limit the response of CO2 assimilation rate and the growth response of soybean plants if temperature and CO2 increase concurrently, and illustrate that light may be an important consideration in predicting the relative stimulation of photosynthesis by elevated CO2 at the whole plant level.  相似文献

Mature trees have already experienced substantial increases in CO2 concentrations during their lifetimes, and will experience continuing increases in the future. Small open-top chambers were used to enclose branchlets that were at a height of between 20 and 25 m in the canopy of the tree species Luehea seemannii Tr. & Planch. in a tropical forest in Panamá. Elevated concentrations of CO2 increased the rate of photosynthetic carbon fixation and decreased stomatal conductance of leaves, but did not influence the growth of leaf area per chamber, the production of flower buds and fruit nor the concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates within leaves. The production of flower buds was highly correlated with the leaf area produced in the second flush of leaves, indicating that the branchlets of mature trees of Luehea seemannii are autonomous to a considerable extent. Elevated levels of CO2 did increase the concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates in woody stem tissue. Elevated CO2 concentration also they increased the ratio of leaf area to total biomass of branchlets, and tended to reduce individual fruit weight. These data suggest that the biomass allocation patterns of mature trees may change under future elevated levels of CO2. Although there were no effects on growth during the experiment, the possibility of increased growth in the season following CO2 enrichment due to increased carbohydrate concentrations in woody tissue cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Genotypic variability was studied in two Mediterranean grass species, Bromus erectus and Dactylis glomerata , with regard to the response to CO2 of leaf total non-structural carbohydrate concentration ([TNC]lf), specific leaf area (SLA), and leaf carbon and nitrogen concentrations ([C]lf and [N]lf, respectively). Fourteen genotypes of each species were grown together on intact soil monoliths at ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μmol mol−1, respectively). In both species, the most consistent effect of elevated CO2 was an increase in [TNC]lf and a decrease in leaf nitrogen concentration when expressed either as total dry mass [Nm]lf, structural dry mass [Nmst]lf or leaf area [Na]lf. The SLA decreased only in D. glomerata , due to an accumulation of total non-structural carbohydrates and to an increase in leaf density. No genotypic variability was found for any variable in B. erectus , suggesting that genotypes responded in a similar way to elevated CO2. In D. glomerata , a genotypic variability was found only for [Cst], [Nm]lf, [Nmst]lf and [Na]lf. Since [Nm]lf is related to plant growth and is a strong determinant of plant–herbivore interactions, our results suggest evolutionary consequences of elevated CO2 through competitive interactions or herbivory.  相似文献

Abstract. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of water stress in sweet potato ( Ipomoea batatas L. [Lam] 'Georgia Jet') on biomass production and plant-water relationships in an enriched CO2 atmosphere. Plants were grown in pots containing sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult) at two concentrations of elevated CO2 and two water regimes in open-top field chambers. During the first 12 d of water stress, leaf xylem potentials were higher in plants grown in a CO2 concentration of 438 and 666 μmol mol−1 than in plants grown at 364 μmol mol−1. The 364 μmol mol−1 CO2 grown plants had to be rewatered 2 d earlier than the high CO2-grown plants in response to water stress. For plants grown under water stress, the yield of storage roots and root: shoot ratio were greater at high CO2 than at 364 μmol mol−1; the increase, however, was not linear with increasing CO2 concentrations. In well-watered plants, biomass production and storage root yield increased at elevated CO2, and these were greater as compared to water-stressed plants grown at the same CO2 concentration.  相似文献

A mechanistic analysis of light and carbon use efficiencies   总被引:13,自引:1,他引:12
We explore the extent to which a simple mechanistic model of short-term plant carbon (C) dynamics can account for a number of generally observed plant phenomena. For an individual, fully expanded leaf, the model predicts that the fast-turnover labile C, starch and protein pools are driven into an approximate or moving steady state that is proportional to the average leaf absorbed irradiance on a time-scale of days to weeks, even under realistic variable light conditions, in qualitative agreement with general patterns of leaf acclimation to light observed both temporally within the growing season and spatially within plant canopies. When the fast-turnover pools throughout the whole plant (including stems and roots) also follow this moving steady state, the model predicts that the time-averaged whole-plant net primary productivity is proportional to the time-averaged canopy absorbed irradiance and to gross canopy photosynthesis, and thus suggests a mechanistic explanation of the observed approximate constancy of plant light-use efficiency (LUE) and carbon-use efficiency. Under variable light conditions, the fast-turnover pool sizes and the LUE are predicted to depend negatively on the coefficient of variation of irradiance. We also show that the LUE has a maximum with respect to the fraction of leaf labile C allocated to leaf protein synthesis ( alp ), reflecting a trade-off between leaf photosynthesis and leaf respiration. The optimal value of alp is predicted to decrease at elevated [CO2] a , suggesting an adaptive interpretation of leaf acclimation to CO2. The model therefore brings together a number of empirical observations within a common mechanistic framework.  相似文献

To investigate if Eucalyptus species have responded to industrial-age climate change, and how they may respond to a future climate, we measured growth and physiology of fast- ( E. saligna ) and slow-growing ( E. sideroxylon ) seedlings exposed to preindustrial (290), current (400) or projected (650 μL L−1) CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and to current or projected (current +4 °C) temperature. To evaluate maximum potential treatment responses, plants were grown with nonlimiting soil moisture. We found that: (1) E. sideroxylon responded more strongly to elevated [CO2] than to elevated temperature, while E. saligna responded similarly to elevated [CO2] and elevated temperature; (2) the transition from preindustrial to current [CO2] did not enhance eucalypt plant growth under ambient temperature, despite enhancing photosynthesis; (3) the transition from current to future [CO2] stimulated both photosynthesis and growth of eucalypts, independent of temperature; and (4) warming enhanced eucalypt growth, independent of future [CO2], despite not affecting photosynthesis. These results suggest large potential carbon sequestration by eucalypts in a future world, and highlight the need to evaluate how future water availability may affect such responses.  相似文献

Rice is arguably the most important food source on the planet and is consumed by over half of the world's population. Considerable increases in yield are required over this century to continue feeding the world's growing population. This meta-analysis synthesizes the research to date on rice responses to two elements of global change, rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) and rising tropospheric ozone concentration ([O3]). On an average, elevated [CO2] (627 ppm) increased rice yields by 23%. Modest increases in grain mass and larger increases in panicle and grain number contributed to this response. The response of rice to elevated [CO2] varied with fumigation technique. The more closely the fumigation conditions mimicked field conditions, the smaller was the stimulation of yield by elevated [CO2]. Free air concentration enrichment (FACE) experiments showed only a 12% increase in rice yield. The rise in atmospheric [CO2] will be accompanied by increases in tropospheric O3 and temperature. When compared with rice grown in charcoal-filtered air, rice exposed to 62 ppb O3 showed a 14% decrease in yield. Many determinants of yield, including photosynthesis, biomass, leaf area index, grain number and grain mass, were reduced by elevated [O3]. While there have been too few studies of the interaction of CO2 and O3 for meta-analysis, the interaction of temperature and CO2 has been studied more widely. Elevated temperature treatments negated any enhancement in rice yield at elevated [CO2], which suggests that identifying high temperature tolerant germplasm will be key to realizing yield benefits in the future.  相似文献
