Subjective age, or how young or old individuals experience themselves to be relative to their chronological age, is a crucial construct in gerontology. Subjective age is a significant predictor of important health outcomes, but little is known about the criteria by which individuals'' subjectively evaluate their age. To identify psychosocial and biomedical factors linked to the subjective evaluation of age, this study examined whether perceived age discrimination and markers of biological aging are associated with subjective age. Participants were 4776 adults (M
age = 68) from the 2008 and 2010 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) who completed measures of subjective age, age discrimination, demographic variables, self-rated health and depression, and had physical health measures, including peak expiratory flow, grip strength, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Telomere length was available for a subset of participants in the 2008 wave (n = 2214). Regression analysis indicated that perceived age discrimination, lower peak expiratory flow, lower grip strength, and higher waist circumference were associated with an older subjective age, controlling for sociodemographic factors, self-rated health, and depression. In contrast, blood pressure and telomere length were not related to subjective age. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that how old a person feels depends in part on psychosocial and biomedical factors, including the experiences of ageism and perceptible indices of fitness and biological age. 相似文献

In atrial and nodal cardiac myocytes, M2 muscarinic receptors activate inhibitory G-proteins (Gi/o), which in turn stimulate G-protein-gated inwardly rectifying K+ channels through direct binding of the Gβγ subunit. Despite also releasing Gβγ, Gs-coupled receptors such as the β-adrenergic receptor are not able to prominently activate this current. An appealing hypothesis would be if components were sequestered in membrane domains such as caveolae/rafts. Using biochemical fractionation followed by Western blotting and/or radioligand binding experiments, we examined the distribution of the components in stable HEK293 and HL-1 cells, which natively express the transduction cascade. The channel, M2 muscarinic, and A1 adenosine receptors were located in noncaveolar/nonraft fractions. Giα1/2 was enriched in both caveolar/raft and noncaveolar/nonraft fractions. In contrast, Gsα was only enriched in caveolar/raft fractions. We constructed YFP-tagged caveolin-2 (YFP-Cav2) and chimeras with the M2 (M2-YFP-Cav2) and A1 (A1-YFP-Cav2) receptors. Analysis of gradient fractions showed that these receptor chimeras were now localized to caveolae-enriched fractions. Microscopy showed that M2-YFP and A1-YFP had a diffuse homogenous membrane signal. YFP-Cav2, M2-YFP-Cav2, and A1-YFP-Cav2 revealed a more punctuate pattern. Finally, we looked at the consequences for signaling. Activation via M2-YFP-Cav2 or A1-YFP-Cav2 revealed substantially slower kinetics compared with M2-YFP or A1-YFP and was reversed by the addition of methyl-β-cyclodextrin. Thus the localization of the channel signal transduction cascade in non-cholesterol rich domains substantially enhances the speed of signaling. The presence of Gsα solely in caveolae may account for signaling selectivity between Gi/o and Gs-coupled receptors. 相似文献

Soil respiration (SR) is commonly modeled by a Q10 (an indicator of temperature sensitivity)function in ecosystem models. Q10is usually treated as a constant of 2 in these models, although Q10 value of SR often decreases with increasing temperatures. It remains unclear whether a general temperaturedependent Q10 model of SR exists at biome and global scale. In this paper, we have compiled the long-term Q10 data of 38 SR studies ranging from the Boreal, Temperate, to Tropical/Subtropical biome on four continents. Our analysis indicated that the general temperature-dependent biome Q10 models of SR existed, especially in the Boreal and Temperate biomes. A single-exponential model was better than a simple linear model in fitting the average Q10 values at the biome scale. Average soil temperature is a better predictor of Q10 value than average air temperature in these models, especially in the Boreal biome. Soil temperature alone could explain about 50% of the Q10 variations in both the Boreal and Temperate biome single-exponential Q10 model. Q10 value of SR decreased with increasing soil temperature but at quite different rates among the three biome Q10 models. The k values (Q10 decay rate constants) were 0.09, 0.07, and 0.02/℃ in the Boreal, Temperate, and Tropical/Subtropical biome, respectively, suggesting that Q10 value is the most sensitive to soil temperature change in the Boreal biome, the second in the Temperate biome, and the least sensitive in the Tropical/Subtropical biome. This also indirectly confirms that acclimation of SR in many soil warming experiments probably occurs. The k value in the \"global\" single-exponential Q10 model which combined both the Boreal and Temperate biome data set was 0.08/℃. However, the global general temperature-dependent Q10model developed using the data sets of the three biomes is not adequate for predicting Q10 values of SR globally. The existence of the general temperature-dependent Q10 models of SR in the Boreal and Temperate biome has important implications for modeling SR, especially in the Boreal biome. More detail model runs are needed to exactly evaluate the impact of using a fixed Q10 vs a temperature-dependent Q10 on SR estimate in ecosystem models (e.g., TEM, Biome-BGC, and PnET). 相似文献

Noogoora burr (Asteraceae: Xanthium occidentale) is an annual from the Neotropics that is a serious weed of rangeland and agricultural regions in many parts of the world. It was one of the first weeds to be systematically targeted for biological control and there were two major phases in the Australian program; 1929-1940, and 1953-1975. Past attempts at biological control are reviewed to identify opportunities for renewed efforts, and for its historical value. Only one insect species was released in the first phase, but host-specificity restrictions were loosened during the second phase resulting in the release of two other insect species. None have been effective. A fourth agent, released primarily for parthenium weed, has had limited impact. However, the rust, Puccinia xanthii, was accidentally introduced in 1975. It has resulted in complete control of Noogoora burr in much of eastern Australia, but has had little or no impact in far northern Australia. Past failures, judged through hindsight, can be attributed to a failure to identify the full native range, lack of consideration for pathogens prior to 1975, and poor understanding of plant compensatory mechanisms and other challenges that an agent must overcome to be effective. A renewed effort specifically targeting Noogoora burr in far northern Australia holds considerable promise. It should include surveys for new agents within the native range of the Xanthium complex, and a systematic search for isolates of the P. xanthii rust that are climatically adapted to tropical conditions in Australia. 相似文献

Longitudinal connectivity is a fundamental characteristic of rivers that can be disrupted by natural and anthropogenic processes. Dams are significant disruptions to streams. Over 2,000,000 low-head dams (<7.6 m high) fragment United States rivers. Despite potential adverse impacts of these ubiquitous disturbances, the spatial impacts of low-head dams on geomorphology and ecology are largely untested. Progress for research and conservation is impaired by not knowing the magnitude of low-head dam impacts. Based on the geomorphic literature, we refined a methodology that allowed us to quantify the spatial extent of low-head dam impacts (herein dam footprint), assessed variation in dam footprints across low-head dams within a river network, and identified select aspects of the context of this variation. Wetted width, depth, and substrate size distributions upstream and downstream of six low-head dams within the Upper Neosho River, Kansas, United States of America were measured. Total dam footprints averaged 7.9 km (3.0–15.3 km) or 287 wetted widths (136–437 wetted widths). Estimates included both upstream (mean: 6.7 km or 243 wetted widths) and downstream footprints (mean: 1.2 km or 44 wetted widths). Altogether the six low-head dams impacted 47.3 km (about 17%) of the mainstem in the river network. Despite differences in age, size, location, and primary function, the sizes of geomorphic footprints of individual low-head dams in the Upper Neosho river network were relatively similar. The number of upstream dams and distance to upstream dams, but not dam height, affected the spatial extent of dam footprints. In summary, ubiquitous low-head dams individually and cumulatively altered lotic ecosystems. Both characteristics of individual dams and the context of neighboring dams affected low-head dam impacts within the river network. For these reasons, low-head dams require a different, more integrative, approach for research and management than the individualistic approach that has been applied to larger dams. 相似文献

Background
The selection of appropriate frames of reference (FOR) is a key factor in the elaboration of spatial perception and the production of robust interaction with our environment. The extent to which we perceive the head axis orientation (subjective head orientation, SHO) with both accuracy and precision likely contributes to the efficiency of these spatial interactions. A first goal of this study was to investigate the relative contribution of both the visual and egocentric FOR (centre-of-mass) in the SHO processing. A second goal was to investigate humans'' ability to process SHO in various sensory response modalities (visual, haptic and visuo-haptic), and the way they modify the reliance to either the visual or egocentric FORs. A third goal was to question whether subjects combined visual and haptic cues optimally to increase SHO certainty and to decrease the FORs disruption effect.Methodology/Principal Findings
Thirteen subjects were asked to indicate their SHO while the visual and/or egocentric FORs were deviated. Four results emerged from our study. First, visual rod settings to SHO were altered by the tilted visual frame but not by the egocentric FOR alteration, whereas no haptic settings alteration was observed whether due to the egocentric FOR alteration or the tilted visual frame. These results are modulated by individual analysis. Second, visual and egocentric FOR dependency appear to be negatively correlated. Third, the response modality enrichment appears to improve SHO. Fourth, several combination rules of the visuo-haptic cues such as the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE), Winner-Take-All (WTA) or Unweighted Mean (UWM) rule seem to account for SHO improvements. However, the UWM rule seems to best account for the improvement of visuo-haptic estimates, especially in situations with high FOR incongruence. Finally, the data also indicated that FOR reliance resulted from the application of UWM rule. This was observed more particularly, in the visual dependent subject. Conclusions: Taken together, these findings emphasize the importance of identifying individual spatial FOR preferences to assess the efficiency of our interaction with the environment whilst performing spatial tasks. 相似文献10.

Background
India is the only nation where girls have greater risks of under-5 mortality than boys. We test whether female disadvantage in breastfeeding and food allocation accounts for gender disparities in mortality. Methods and Findings
Secondary, publicly available anonymized and de-identified data were used; no ethics committee review was required. Multivariate regression and Cox models were performed using Round 3 of India’s National Family and Health Survey (2005–2006; response rate = 93.5%). Models were disaggregated by birth order and sibling gender, and adjusted for maternal age, education, and fixed effects, urban residence, household deprivation, and other sociodemographics. Mothers’ reported practices of WHO/UNICEF recommendations for breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity, and total duration (ages 0–59 months), children’s consumption of 24 food items (6–59 months), and child survival (0–59 months) were examined for first- and secondborns (n = 20,395). Girls were breastfed on average for 0.45 months less than boys (95% CI: = 0.15 months to 0.75 months, p = 0.004). There were no gender differences in breastfeeding initiation (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.97 to 1.12) or exclusivity (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.99 to 1.14). Differences in breastfeeding cessation emerged between 12 and 36 months in secondborn females. Compared with boys, girls had lower consumption of fresh milk by 14% (95% CI: 79% to 94%, p = 0.001) and breast milk by 21% (95% CI: 70% to 90%, p<0.000). Each additional month of breastfeeding was associated with a 24% lower risk of mortality (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.73 to 0.79, p<0.000). Girls’ shorter breastfeeding duration accounted for an 11% increased probability of dying before age 5, accounting for about 50% of their survival disadvantage compared with other low-income countries. Conclusions
Indian girls are breastfed for shorter periods than boys and consume less milk. Future research should investigate the role of additional factors driving India’s female survival disadvantage. 相似文献11.

Using a comparative analysis of Navajo healing ceremonials, acupuncture and biomedical treatment, this essay examines placebo studies and ritual theory as mutually interpenetrating disciplines. Healing rituals create a receptive person susceptible to the influences of authoritative culturally sanctioned 'powers'. The healer provides the sufferer with imaginative, emotional, sensory, moral and aesthetic input derived from the palpable symbols and procedures of the ritual process-in the process fusing the sufferer's idiosyncratic narrative unto a universal cultural mythos. Healing rituals involve a drama of evocation, enactment, embodiment and evaluation in a charged atmosphere of hope and uncertainty. Experimental research into placebo effects demonstrates that routine biomedical pharmacological and procedural interventions contain significant ritual dimensions. This research also suggests that ritual healing not only represents changes in affect, self-awareness and self-appraisal of behavioural capacities, but involves modulations of symptoms through neurobiological mechanisms. Recent scientific investigations into placebo acupuncture suggest several ways that observations from ritual studies can be verified experimentally. Placebo effects are often described as 'non-specific'; the analysis presented here suggests that placebo effects are the 'specific' effects of healing rituals. 相似文献

The Raynaud's Treatment Study (RTS) compared temperature biofeedback training and a behavioral control procedure (frontalis EMG biofeedback) with nifedipine-XL and a medication placebo for treatment of primary Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) in a large (N = 313) multicenter trial. The present study describes the RTS biofeedback protocols and presents data on the acquisition of digital skin temperature and frontalis EMG responses in the RTS. The findings point to substantial problems with acquisition of physiological self-regulation skills in the RTS. Only 34.6% of the Temperature Biofeedback group (N = 81) and 55.4% of the EMG Biofeedback group (N = 74) successfully learned the desired physiological response. In contrast, 67.4% of a Normal Temperature Biofeedback group (N = 46) learned hand warming. Multivariate analysis found that coping strategies, anxiety, gender, and clinic site predicted acquisition of hand-warming skills whereas variables related to RP disease severity did not. Physiological data showed vasoconstriction in response to the onset of biofeedback and also found that performance in the initial sessions was critical for successful acquisition. These findings indicate that attention to the emotional and cognitive aspects of biofeedback training, and a degree of success in the initial biofeedback sessions, are important for acquisition. 相似文献

The author replies to the comments of Drs Blanchard and McGrady, urging that researchers reinvigorate their research efforts in complementary and alternative treatments for hypertension. In subsequent research there is a need to assess treatment adherence, to use more rigorous outcome measures, and to develop new outcome measures that assess impact and improvement in quality of life. 相似文献

Tonic immobility (TI), also known as animal hypnosis, has been observed in a wide variety of taxa and reported in all vertebrate classes with the exception of Agnatha. To date, TI has been reported in six species of elasmobranchs. Preliminary results are presented here for five species of galeomorph sharks, one species of squalomorph shark, and six species of batoids. Tonic immobility was induced in the leopard shark. Triakis semifasciata; the whitetip reef shark, Triaenodon obesus; the blacktip reef shark, Carcharhinus melanopterus; the Caribbean reef shark, Carcharhinus perezi; the swellshark, Cephaloscyllium ventriosum; the California round ray, Urolophus halleri; the shovelnose guitarfish, Rhinobatos productus; the clearnose skate. Raja eglanteria; the cownose ray, Rhinoptera bonasus; and the southern stingray, Dasyatis americana. The broadnose sevengill shark, Notorynchus cepedianus and the yellow stingray, Urolophus jamaicensis failed to exhibit the tonic immobility response, but only one individual of each species was tested. The average induction time ranged from 16.7 sec in the shovelnose guitarfish to 45.7 sec in the clearnose skate. Average duration times ranged from 34.3 sec in the clearnose skate to 274.0 sec in the Caribbean reef shark. Depending upon the species involved, TI has been used as an aid in a few husbandry and medical procedures in captive elasmobranches at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. These procedures have included gross examination, measuring lengths, tube feeding, and drawing blood via caudal venipuncture. Using tonic immobility during these procedures is beneficial as once induced, the subject's struggling is minimal and usually requires little restraint. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Treatment of phantom limb pain with combined EMG and thermal biofeedback: a case report 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Phantom pain is a frequent consequence of the amputation of an extremity and causes considerable discomfort and disruption of daily activities. This study describes a patient with extreme phantom limb pain following amputation of the right upper limb. The treatment consisted of 6 sessions of EMG biofeedback followed by 6 sessions of temperature biofeedback. The patient did not use a prosthesis and had not received previous treatment for chronic pain. Results demonstrated complete elimination of phantom limb pain after treatment, which was maintained at a 3- and 12-month follow-up. Pain relief covaried with increase in skin temperature at stump and perceptual telescoping (retraction of phantom limb into stump). 相似文献
