Intersegmental coordination during locomotion in legged animals arises from mechanical couplings and the exchange of neuronal information between legs. Here, the information flow from a single leg sense organ of the stick insect Cuniculina impigra onto motoneurons and interneurons of other legs was investigated. The femoral chordotonal organ (fCO) of the right middle leg, which measures posture and movement of the femur-tibia joint, was stimulated, and the responses of the tibial motoneuron pools of the other legs were recorded. In resting animals, fCO signals did not affect motoneuronal activity in neighboring legs. When the locomotor system was activated and antagonistic motoneurons were bursting in alternation, fCO stimuli facilitated transitions from flexor to extensor activity and vice versa in the contralateral leg. Following pharmacological treatment with picrotoxin, a blocker of GABA-ergic inhibition, the tibial motoneurons of all legs showed specific responses to signals from the middle leg fCO. For the contralateral middle leg we show that fCO signals encoding velocity and position of the tibia were processed by those identified local premotor nonspiking interneurons known to contribute to posture and movement control during standing and voluntary leg movements. Interneurons received both excitatory and inhibitory inputs, so that the response of some interneurons supported the motoneuronal output, while others opposed it. Our results demonstrate that sensory information from the fCO specifically affects the motoneuronal activity of other legs and that the layer of premotor nonspiking interneurons is a site of interaction between local proprioceptive sensory signals and proprioceptive signals from other legs.  相似文献

In inactive stick insects, sensory information from the femoral chordotonal organ (fCO) about position and movement of the femur-tibia joint is transferred via local nonspiking interneurons onto extensor and flexor tibiae motoneurons. Information is processed by the interaction of antagonistic parallel pathways at two levels: (1) at the input side of the nonspiking interneurons and (2) at the input side of the motoneurons. We tested by a combination of physiological experiments and computer simulation whether the known network topology and the properties of its elements are sufficient to explain the generation of the motor output in response to passive joint movements, that is resistance reflexes. In reinvestigating the quantitative characteristics of interneuronal pathways we identified 10 distinct types of nonspiking interneurons. Synaptic inputs from fCO afferents onto these interneurons are direct excitatory and indirect inhibitory. These connections were investigated with respect to position and velocity signals from the fCO. The results were introduced in the network simulation. The motor output of the simulation has the same characteristics as the real system, even when particular types of interneurons were removed in the simulation and the real system.  相似文献

The cuticle strain which develops in the hindleg tibiae when a locust prepares to kick, or when the tibia thrusts against an obstacle, is detected by two campaniform sensilla, which reflexly excite the fast extensor tibiae motoneuron, some of the flexor tibiae motoneurons and nonspiking interneurons. The reflex excitation is adaptive for the extensor motoneuron during both co-activation and thrusting, but is only adaptive for the flexor motoneurons during co-activation, and is maladaptive during thrusting. We show that the femoral chordotonal organ, which monitors tibial position, controls the efficacy of the strain feedback. The campaniform sensilla-induced depolarization in the extensor motoneuron is about twice as large when the tendon is in mid position (reflecting a tibial-femoral angle of 90°) than when fully stretched (reflecting tibial flexion), while in the flexors the reverse is true. The amplitudes of excitatory postsynaptic potentials evoked by single campaniform sensilla spikes, are, however, not affected. Our data suggests that the chordotonal organ modulates the gain of the strain feedback onto the motoneurons by exciting interneuronal circuits whose output sums with the former. Thrusting typically occurs with the tibia partially extended, therefore the actions of the chordotonal organ support the production of a maximal thrusting force. Accepted: 27 December 1996  相似文献

The femoral chordotonal organ in orthopterans signals proprioceptive sensory information concerning the femur-tibia joint to the central nervous system. In the stick insect, 80 out of 500 afferents sense tibial position, velocity, or acceleration. It has been assumed that the other sensory cells in the chordotonal organ would serve as vibration detectors. Extracellular recordings from the femoral chordotonal organ nerve in fact revealed a sensitivity of the sense organ for vibrations with frequencies ranging from 10 Hz to 4 kHz, with a maximum sensitivity between 200 and 800 Hz. Single vibration-sensitive afferents responded to the same range of frequencies. Their spike activity depended on acceleration amplitude and displacement amplitude of the vibration stimulus. Additionally, 80% of the vibration-sensitive afferents received indirect presynaptic inputs from themselves or from other afferents of the femoral chordotonal organ, the amplitude of which depended on stimulus frequency and displacement amplitude. They were associated with a decrease of input resistance in the afferent terminal. From the present investigation we conclude that the femoral chordotonal organ of the stick insect is a bifunctional sensory organ that, on the one hand, measures position and movement of the tibia and, on the other hand, detects vibration of the tibia. The influence of vibratory signals from the femoral chordotonal organ fCO on the activities of muscles and motoneurons in the three main leg joints of the stick insect leg, i.e., the thoraco-coxal (TC) joint, the coxa-trochanteral (CT) joint, and the femur-tibia (FT) joint, was investigated when the animal was in the active behavioral state. Vibration stimuli induced a switch in motor activity (phase transition), for example, in the FT joint motor activity switched from flexor tibiae to extensor tibiae or vice versa. Similarly, fCO vibration induced phase transitions in both directions between the motoneuron pools of the TC joint and the CT joint. There was no correlation between the directions of phase transition in different joints. Vibration stimuli presented during simultaneous fCO elongation terminated the reflex reversal motor pattern in the FT joint prematurely by activating extensor and inactivating flexor tibiae motoneurons. In legs with freely moving tibia, fCO vibration promoted phase transitions in tibial movement. Furthermore, ground vibration promoted stance-swing transitions as long as the leg was not close to its anterior extreme position during stepping. Our results provide evidence that, in the active behavioral state of the stick insect, vibration signals can access the rhythm generating or bistable networks of the three main leg joints and can promote phase transitions in motor activity in both directions. The results substantiate earlier findings on the modular structure of the single-leg walking pattern generator and indicate a new mechanism of how sensory influence can contribute to the synchronization of phase transitions in adjacent leg joints independent of the walking direction.  相似文献

The connective chordotonal organs (COs) in the femora of the prothoracic and mesothoracic legs of the locust Schistocerca gregaria are divided into two parts, the proximal and the distal scoloparia. The proximal scoloparium contains about 150 small neurons and is anchored to the femoral cuticle. The distal scoloparium contains about 50 larger neurons and is connected at its proximal end to both the cuticle and the flexor tibiae muscle.Records were made from the distal scoloparium, classifying units by spike size. The tibial position/total activity response curve is ∪-shaped but when a small number of units is selected the responses occur only when the tibia is on one side of its centre position. The tonic responses display considerable hysteresis and a degree of adaptation which varies with the tibial angle. Units with phasic and phasic-tonic responses are common and their responsiveness depends on the range of angles the tibia is moved through. The same units respond strongly to flexor tibiae contraction with the tibia either fixed or free, and so may serve as receptors for tension in that muscle.The CO mediates phasic resistance reflexes in all three extensor tibiae motoneurons and tonic reflexes in the extensor ‘slow’ neuron. It is suggested that the very detailed information furnished by the CO is used in a complex way in the control of the femoral muscles.  相似文献

The locust jump consists of three distinct phases: Cocking: a rapid flexion of both hindleg tibia and locking of both tibia in full flexion. Co-contraction: simultaneous contractions in hindleg flexor and extensor muscles lasting about 0.5 s resulting in the storage of energy for the jump in elastic elements of the legs and muscles. Triggering: a sudden inhibition of flexor activity to allow the shortening of the contracted extensors and the release of the energy stored during the co-contraction phase. The neural circuitry controlling these three phases is now reasonably well understood. Some of its major features are: (1) pairs of large identifiable interneurons in the thoracic ganglia for evoking the cocking response (C-neurons) and for triggering the jump (M-neurons), (2) a central excitatory pathway from extensor to flexor tibiae motoneurons to ensure simultaneous activation of extensor and flexor motoneurons during the initial part of the co-contraction phase, (3) a positive feedback pathway from cuticular receptors to extensor motoneurons for maintaining extensor activity during the co-contraction phase, (4) proprioceptive feedback to the trigger interneurons for increasing their excitability during the co-contraction phase and thereby allowing a variety of external stimuli to activate the trigger neurons and evoke a jump, (5) presynaptic inhibition of visual pathways to the trigger neurons to ensure that the trigger neurons are not activated by the simultaneous occurrence of visual and auditory stimuli in the absence of proprioceptive input, and (6) a pair of multifunctional visual movement detecting neurons which can initiate cocking or trigger the jump depending on the animal's state.  相似文献

In the stick insect Carausius morosus identified nonspiking interneurons (type E4) were investigated in the mesothoracic ganglion during intraand intersegmental reflexes and during searching and walking.In the standing and in the actively moving animal interneurons of type E4 drive the excitatory extensor tibiae motoneurons, up to four excitatory protractor coxae motoneurons, and the common inhibitor 1 motoneuron (Figs. 1–4).In the standing animal a depolarization of this type of interneuron is induced by tactile stimuli to the tarsi of the ipsilateral front, middle and hind legs (Fig. 5). This response precedes and accompanies the observed activation of the affected middle leg motoneurons. The same is true when compensatory leg placement reflexes are elicited by tactile stimuli given to the tarsi of the legs (Fig. 6).During forward walking the membrane potential of interneurons of type E4 is strongly modulated in the step-cycle (Figs.8–10). The peak depolarization occurs at the transition from stance to swing. The complicated response characteristics of the identified nonspiking interneuron type E4 upon elongation stimuli to the femoral chordotonal organ (fCO) can be obtained by a computer simulation using the neuronal network simulator BioSim, if the following assumptions were introduced: (1) The interneurons receive direct excitatory input from position- and velocity-sensitive fCO afferents but also, in parallel delayed inhibition from the same velocity-sensitive afferents. (2) Position-sensitive afferents in part show adaptation with a rather long time-constant. A subsequent experimental analysis demonstrated that all these assumptions fit the reality: (1) Interneurons of type E4 receive direct excitatory input from fCO afferents. (2) Interneurons of type E4 are affected by velocity dependent delayed inhibitory inputs from the fCO. (3) The fCO does contain adapting position-sensitive sensory neurons, which have not been described before. The resistance reflex in the femur-tibia joint of stick insects shows a great variability in its strength which allows the animal to adapt to different environmental requirements. This paper presents the modulations in the neural reflex pathways which occur during an increase of the gain of the resistance reflex after tactile stimulation. The gain increase was associated with a short-term, reversible increase of slow extensor tibiae depolarization. Because membrane properties like resting potential and input resistance of this motoneuron remained unchanged during the gain changes, the increase of depolarization appeared to result from an increase of stimulus-related inputs and thus was due to modulations of the premotor neuronal network containing afferents of the femoral chordotonal organ and interneurons. However, no changes of spike activity of sensory neurons and amount of their presynaptic inhibition was found during gain changes. In contrast, recordings from different types of identified premotor non-spiking interneurons demonstrated a correlation between the amplitude of stimulus-related inputs to particular non-spiking interneurons and gain changes, while other non-spiking interneurons appeared unaffected. Thus, an increase in gain of the resistance reflex must be due to a specific weighting of synapses between sense organ and particular non-spiking interneurons. Accepted: 3 July 1998  相似文献
