The silkworm, Bombyx mori, has a dimorphic sperm system. The eupyrene sperm is the sperm to fertilize eggs and the apyrene sperm plays a crucial role for assisting fertilization. Heat-treated (33 degrees C for 96h) Daizo (DH) males, one of the strains in the silkworm, produce only eupyrene sperm, while in triploid males only apyrene sperm are functional. Though both types of males are found to be sterile, double copulation of the two males with a single female greatly increases fertility. Here we examined the fertilizing ability of eupyrene and apyrene sperm by means of an artificial insemination technique previously established in B. mori. Neither the eupyrene sperm collected from DH males, nor the apyrene sperm from triploid males have the ability to fertilize eggs. Artificial insemination with the mixture of eupyrene and apyrene sperm leveled up the frequency of fertilized eggs to more than 80%. When cryopreserved DH sperm (eupyrene sperm) were subjected to the same experiment, more than 95% fertilized eggs were obtained. These results confirmed that apyrene sperm play an important and indispensable role in fertilization in B. mori. Separate collection of functional eupyrene sperm and functional apyrene sperm and success of fertilization by means of the artificial insemination technique are applicable for further studies to elucidate the function of apyrene sperm.  相似文献

Sperm form and size is tremendously variable within and across species. However, a general explanation for this variation is lacking. It has been suggested that sperm size may influence sperm competition, and there is evidence for this in some taxa but not others. In addition to normal fertilizing sperm, a number of molluscs and insects produce nonfertile sperm that are also extremely morphologically variable, and distinct from fertilizing forms. There is evidence that nonfertile sperm play an indirect role in sperm competition by decreasing female remating propensity in Lepidopterans, but in most taxa the function of parasperm is unknown. We investigated the role of nonfertile (oligopyrene) sperm during sperm competition in the fresh water snail Viviparus ater. Previous studies found that the proportion of oligopyrene sperm increased with the risk of sperm competition, and hence it seems likely that these sperm influence fertilization success during competitive matings. In mating experiments in which females were sequentially housed with males, we examined a range of male characteristics which potentially influence fertilization success. We found that the size of oligopyrene sperm was the best predictor of fertilization success, with males having the longer sperm siring the highest proportion of offspring. Furthermore, we found a positive shell size and sperm concentration effect on paternity, and females with multiply sired families produced more offspring than females mating with only one male. The effects of selected concentrations of cytochalasins B (1-10 micrograms/ml; CB) and D (10, 50 micrograms/ml; CD) on the morphology and fertilization of zebra danio (Brachydanio) eggs were studied primarily with light and scanning electron microscopy. Eggs pretreated with either CB (10 micrograms/ml) or CD (10, 50 micrograms/ml) prepared in Fish Ringer's solution-0.5% DMSO showed a flattened shape, alterations in the form of surface microplicae and microvilli, and occasional spontaneous exocytosis of cortical granules. All eggs preincubated in either CB or CD were activated upon transfer to tap water, showing cortical granule exocytosis, elevation of the chorion, and formation of a fertilization cone. When eggs were pretreated for 5 minutes with 1-5 micrograms/ml CB or 10 micrograms/ml CD and inseminated, they incorporated the fertilizing sperm and typically developed to the two-cell stage. A single sperm cell attached to and fused with the sperm entry site microvilli but failed to enter the cytoplasm in eggs preincubated with 10 micrograms/ml CB. Eggs that were immersed continuously in either CB (10 micrograms/ml) or CD (50 micrograms/ml) 15 seconds after insemination also failed to incorporate the fertilizing sperm. Treatment of eggs after insemination with CD (10 micrograms/ml), however, did not prevent sperm cell incorporation or fertilization cone formation. Our drug data suggest the presence of actin-containing filaments in the danio egg before and following fertilization. These filaments appear to play a role in maintaining the shape of the egg cell and its surface specializations and in the incorporation of the fertilizing sperm. Functional aspects of the maturation of epididymal spermatozoa have been examined by means of surgical insemination of two types of sperm suspension directly into the oviducts. Suspensions were prepared by macerating tissue from the upper corpus region of the epididymis, and cell-free plasma was prepared from the contents of the cauda epididymidis. Each comparison of the fertilizing ability of the two sperm suspensions was made within the same animal, known numbers of upper corpus spermatozoa in either medium TCM 199 or caudal plasma being instilled into separate oviducts close to the time of ovulation.Activated eggs were recovered from 11 of 12 inseminated animals some 4–6 h later, but within the intervals examined there was a distinct difference in the fertilizing ability of the two types of sperm suspension; 87% of the eggs were activated by upper corpus spermatozoa in TCM 199 compared with 9% of the eggs exposed to similar spermatozoa suspended in caudal plasma. Furthermore, the fertilization process was invariably more advanced when eggs had been activated by the upper corpus spermatozoa suspended in TCM 199, and the number of spermatozoa on or in the zona pellucida was likewise consistently higher with such sperm suspensions. The rôle of the factor(s) in cauda epididymal plasma contributing to the observed delay in fertilizing ability is discussed in the context of sperm transport and capacitation after natural mating.  相似文献

The effect of alcohol on the fertilizing ability of both human and hamster spermatozoa was examined by an in vitro fertilization assay using hamster ova. Spermatozoa were incubated in capacitating media for 3 hr (hamster sperm) and 4 hr (human sperm). Hamster ova were inseminated with preincubated sperm and were examined after 2 to 3 hr. Ethanol was added to the capacitating media at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg%. Fertilization of zona-free hamster eggs by human spermatozoa was reduced from 49.6% in no alcohol to 16.7% in 400 mg% ethanol. Fertilization of hamster eggs by hamster sperm revealed a reduction from 63.6% to 33.7% in cumulus-intact eggs and from 65.8% to 10.8% in cumulus-free eggs in the presence of ethanol at 400 mg%. Hamster sperm acrosome reaction was reduced from 47% to 12%. When these hamster sperm with reduced acrosome reaction were placed with zona-free hamster eggs, the 100% fertilization rate was not reduced; however, the fertilization index, which reflects the number of swelling sperm heads per egg, was reduced from 8.5 to 1.8. This suggests that as little as 12% of the sperm with an acrosome reaction is sufficient to fertilize 100% of the zona-free eggs. If ethanol was added to the insemination media only, there was no inhibition of fertilization by human sperm or hamster sperm that had been previously capacitated in an ethanol-free media. Removal of the ethanol from the preincubated sperm produced fertilization at control levels; thus the inhibitory effect is reversible. These results indicate that ethanol may affect fertilization by an inhibition of the capacitation and/or acrosome reaction process.  相似文献

It is difficult to predict a priori how mating success translates into fertilization success in simultaneous hermaphrodites with internal fertilization. Whereas insemination decisions will be determined by male interests, fertilization will depend on female interests, possibly leading to discrepancies between insemination and fertilization patterns. The planarian flatworm Schmidtea polychroa, a simultaneous hermaphrodite in which mating partners trade sperm was studied. Sperm can be stored for months yet individuals mate frequently. Using microsatellites, maternity and paternity data were obtained from 748 offspring produced in six groups of 10 individuals during four weeks. Adults produced young from four mates on average. Reciprocal fertilization between two mates was found in only 41 out of 110 registered mate combinations, which is clearly less than what is predicted from insemination patterns. Multiple paternity was high: > 80% of all cocoons had two to five fathers for only three to five offspring per cocoon. Because animals were collected from a natural population, 28% of all hatchlings were sired by unknown sperm donors in the field, despite a 10-day period of acclimatization and within-group mating. This percentage decreased only moderately throughout the experiment, showing that sperm can be stored and used for at least a month, despite frequent mating and sperm digestion. The immediate paternity a sperm donor could expect to obtain was only about 25%. Male reproductive success increased linearly with the number of female partners, providing support for Bateman's principle in hermaphrodites. Our results suggest that hermaphrodites do not trade fertilizations when trading sperm during insemination, lending support to the view that such conditional sperm exchange is driven by exchange of resources.  相似文献

The electrical response of mature anuran eggs to the fertilizing sperm consists of a rapid depolarization and a decrease in resistance of the plasma membrane (fertilization potential) and serves as a fast block to polyspermy. We report here that the fertilization potential, previously thought to be the earliest electrical response of the egg, is preceded in Rana temporaria by changes in voltage noise. Voltage noise was recorded after insemination and compared in monospermic and NaI-induced polyspermic eggs. Fertilization potential in monospermic eggs arised at 1 min 45 sec to 2 min 15 sec after insemination, and that in NaI-induced polyspermic eggs did at 3 min to 3 min 30 sec after insemination. However, the increase in voltage noise was detected at the similar time (1–2 min 30 sec) after insemination in both the eggs. The duration of voltage noise increase before the fertilization potential was larger in polyspermic eggs (50–105 sec) than in monospermic eggs (10–40 sec). Polyspermic fertilization in Rana temporaria induced by NaI was checked by visualizing multiple sperm entry sites with the scanning microscope. The process of sperm entry and the development of the fertilization body are similar to those occurring with monospermic fertilization; furthermore all supernumerary sperm fuse only with the animal hemisphere of the egg. Although the physiological basis of the changes in voltage noise is unclear, these alterations appear to be the earliest electrical response to sperm yet reported.  相似文献

The responses of the egg to insemination in a modified Fish Ringer's solution (FRS) were examined in eggs of the zebrafish ( Brachydanio rerio ) primarily by scanning electron microscopy. FRS is a physiological saline which temporarily inhibits parthenogenetic activation of the egg for 5–8 min. Spermatozoa were collected in a small volume of water and pipetted over eggs in FRS. Eggs inseminated in FRS typically incorporated the fertilizing sperm within 3–4 min. Inseminated cells showed an absence of a fertilization cone and no cortical granule exocytosis. The deep conical depression in the egg surface beneath the micropyle remained unaltered. Control eggs inseminated in tank water developed a large fertilization cone during sperm incorporation. Occasionally, eggs inseminated in water were observed to incorporate the entire sperm head prior to egg activation. Our results corroborate earlier findings showing that in the zebrafish, cortical granule exocytosis, fertilization cone formation and elevation of the sperm entry site are not triggered by the fertilizing sperm in experimental conditions (18, 19). Furthermore, sperm incorporation requires neither egg activation nor formation of a fertilization cone in this fish.  相似文献

Sperm storage organs allow females to temporally separate insemination from fertilization, manipulate ejaculates and control fertilization. In the reproductive tract of female fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), sperm are found in two different organs--a pair or triplet of spermathecae, and a "fertilization chamber". In order to understand the specific function of each of these organs, we tested the following hypotheses: (1) Sperm are distributed equally amongst the various sperm storage organs; (2) Both organ types maintain sperm viability; and (3) Sperm used in fertilization come from the fertilization chamber. We counted sperm in spermathecae and fertilization chamber of Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) every 3 days for 18 days following insemination, and used a live/dead staining technique to determine the viability of sperm in these organs. Finally, by extirpating spermathecae from inseminated females and allowing them to oviposit, we were able to identify the fertilization chamber as the source of fertilizing sperm. Numbers of sperm in the spermathecae declined from an average of 3575 on the day of copulation to 649, 18 days later. Conversely, the fertilization chamber maintained a fairly constant level of sperms, ranging between an average of 207 cells on day 3 to 115 sperms on day 18. Throughout the period we monitored, we found high levels of sperm viability in both organs (> 80%). Sperm viability was similarly high in the fertilization chambers of females without spermathecae. However, fertility of eggs laid by these females declined rapidly, as did the number of sperm in the fertilization chamber. We conclude that both the spermathecae and the fertilization chamber are active sperm storage organs, with separate functions: the spermathecae for long-term storage and the fertilization chamber, periodically filled by the spermathecae, a staging point for fertilizing sperm. We suggest that the use of both organs by females results in sperm economy, which adaptively prolongs the intervals between copulations.  相似文献

Males of many species evolved the capability of adjusting their ejaculate phenotype in response to social cues to match the expected mating conditions. When females store sperm for a prolonged time, the expected fitness return of plastic adjustments of ejaculate phenotype may depend on the interval between mating and fertilization. Although prolonged female sperm storage (FSS) increases the opportunity for sperm competition, as a consequence of the longer temporal overlap of ejaculates from several males, it may also create variable selective forces on ejaculate phenotype, for example by exposing trade‐offs between sperm velocity and sperm survival. We evaluated the relationship between the plasticity of ejaculate quality and FSS in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, a polyandrous live‐bearing fish in which females store sperm for several months and where stored sperm contribute significantly to a male's lifelong reproductive success. In this species, males respond to the perception of future mating opportunities by increasing the quantity (number) and quality (swimming velocity) of ready‐to‐use sperm (an anticipatory response called ‘sperm priming’). Here we investigated (a) the effect of sperm priming on in vitro sperm viability at stripping and its temporal decline (as an estimate of sperm survival), and (b) the in vivo competitive fertilization success in relation to female sperm storage using artificial insemination. As expected, sperm‐primed males produced more numerous and faster sperm, but with a reduced in vitro sperm viability at stripping and after 4 hr, compared with their counterparts. Artificial insemination revealed that the small (nonsignificant) advantage of primed sperm when fertilization immediately follows insemination is reversed when eggs are fertilized by female‐stored sperm, weeks after insemination. By suggesting a plastic trade‐off between sperm velocity and viability, these results demonstrate that prolonged female sperm storage generates divergent selection pressures on ejaculate phenotype.  相似文献

Sperm competition is expected to favour the evolution of traits that influence the performance of sperm when they compete to fertilize a female''s eggs. While there is considerable evidence that selection favours increases in sperm numbers, much less is known about how sperm quality contributes towards competitive fertilization success. Here, we determine whether variation in sperm quality influences competitive fertilization success in the green swordtail Xiphophorus helleri, a highly promiscuous livebearing fish. We use artificial insemination as a method of controlled sperm delivery and show that sperm swimming velocity is the primary determinant of fertilization success when ejaculates from two males compete to fertilize a female''s eggs. By contrast, we found no evidence that sperm length had any effect on siring success. We also found no evidence that pre- and postcopulatory sexual traits were phenotypically integrated in this species, suggesting that the previous observation that reproductive skew favours males with high mating rates is unlikely to be due to any direct association between sperm quality and male sexual ornamentation.  相似文献

The present study is concerned with the effect of radiation to the testis on fertilizing ability in vitro using golden hamster spermatozoa. Male hamsters at 6 and 8 weeks of age were given acute testicular X-irradiation (200 kVp, 20 mA, 0.47-0.48 Gy/min). Spermatozoa were collected from the cauda epididymides at different times after irradiation and then they were suspended in fertilization medium. After preincubation for 4-5 hr, the spermatozoa were cultured with the eggs collected from mature hamsters treated with PMSG-hCG. Fertilized eggs were examined for incidence of sperm penetration and formation of pronuclei at 4-5 hr after insemination. The fertilization rate (47.7%) at the 6th week after irradiation with a dose of 2 Gy was much lower in comparison with the control value (92.6%). However, the fertilization rates at the 3rd and 9th weeks after irradiation were 97.7 and 90.6%, respectively. In these period, no difference was found between the irradiated groups and the control groups. From the changes in sperm concentration after irradiation with a dose of 2 Gy, it was found that the fertilization rate was the lowest at the 6th week. The sensitive stage to radiation during spermatogenesis with reference to the reduction of fertilizing ability after irradiation coincides with that of decrease in the sperm concentration and sperm motility. The results of fertilization rate at the 6th week after different doses of X-irradiation (0.25-6 Gy) indicated that the reduction of fertilization rate is nearly expressed as a dose-response relationship.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Protease inhibitors were used to study certain physiological responses (secretion of the cortical granule protease, altered resceptively to sperm penetration, initiation of cell division and embryogenesis) of sea urchin eggs to stimulation by calcium ionophore A23187. Protease activity in the secretory product released from the eggs 5 min after insemination or parthenogenetic activation with ionophore was completely inhibited by soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI), antipain (Ap), and leupeptin (Lp). A barrier was established to prevent subsequently added sperm from penetrating (fertilizing) ionophore-activated eggs, co-incident with the elevation of the fertilization membrane. These processes were retarded by inhibitors of the cortical granule protease in ionophore-activated eggs, just as they are when eggs are initially stimulated by sperm at fertilization. A23187-activated eggs did not divide unless they had been secondarily fertilized by sperm, even if the ionophore was subsequently removed by extensive washing. However, ionophore-activated eggs that were penetrated by a single spermatozoan in SBTI developed into normal larvae under similar conditions. These results suggest that A23187 may be an incomplete parthenogenetic agent because it cannot stimulate eggs to assemble centrioles required to organize the mitotic apparatus. The centrioles are normally provided by the sperm during fertilization. A23187 may also be toxic to the eggs. Furthermore, since cortical granules are secretory organelles, the data suggest a possible functional relationship between calcium ions and protease activation in stimulus-secretion coupling in sea urchin eggs at fertilization.  相似文献

The measurement of cellular DNA content by DNA microfluorometry revealed that medaka embryos that were fertilized with normal sperm and exposed to heat shock (41 degrees C for 3 min) or hydrostatic pressure (700 kg/cm2 for 10 min) at 85-95 min after insemination were tetraploid. Embryos fertilized with normal sperm and exposed to heat shock (41 degrees C for 2 min at 2-3 min after insemination) were triploid. These results suggest that heat shock or hydrostatic pressure at 85-95 min after insemination arrests the first cleavage, while heat shock at 2-3 min after insemination arrests the second meiotic division. Medaka clones have been produced by the following method: Eggs from orange-red or variegated variety were activated by UV-irradiated, genetically impotent sperm of wild-type fish (UV sperm). The haploid eggs obtained were diploidized by preventing the first cleavage with heat shock or hydrostatic pressure to produce homozygous females. Each of the two homozygous females was mated with vasectomized male in isotonic balanced salt solution to collect unfertilized eggs. The collected eggs were activated with UV sperm and converted from haploid to diploid by arrest of the second meiotic division with heat shock. Hatched fry of each homozygous diploid (all females) were fed with a methyltestosterone-containing diet (40 micrograms/gm diet) to produce sex-reversed males, which were mated with brood females, and thus two cloned lines were obtained.  相似文献

Prevention of polyspermic fertilization in sea urchins (Jaffe, 1976, Nature (Lond.). 261:68-71) and the worm Urechis (Gould-Somero, Jaffe, and Holland, 1979, J. Cell Biol. 82:426-440) involves an electrically mediated fast block. The fertilizing sperm causes a positive shift in the egg's membrane potential; this fertilization potential prevents additional sperm entries. Since in Urechis the egg membrane potential required to prevent fertilization is more positive than in the sea urchin, we tested whether in a cross-species fertilization the blocking voltage is determined by the species of the egg or by the species of the sperm. With some sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) females, greater than or equal to 90% of the eggs were fertilized by Urechis sperm; a fertilization potential occurred, the fertilization envelope elevated, and sometimes decondensing Urechis sperm nuclei were found in the egg cytoplasm. After insemination of sea urchin eggs with Urechis sperm during voltage clamp at +50 mV, fertilization (fertilization envelope elevation) occurred in only nine of twenty trials, whereas, at +20 mV, fertilization occurred in ten of ten trials. With the same concentration of sea urchin sperm, fertilization of sea urchin eggs occurred, in only two of ten trials at +20 mV. These results indicate that the blocking voltage for fertilization in these crosses is determined by the sperm species, consistent with the hypothesis that the fertilization potential may block the translocation within the egg membrane of a positively charged component of the sperm.  相似文献

Androdioecy (populations comprised of mixtures of males and hermaphrodites) is a rare mating system, found only in a few plants and animals. The rarity of this system stems from the limited benefits to males in an otherwise all-hermaphroditic population. One of the potential benefits to males is typified by the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, in which hermaphrodites do not produce sufficient sperm to fertilize all of their eggs. Here we explore the possibility that males are needed for complete fertilization of hermaphrodites' eggs in a second androdioecious animal, the clam shrimp Eulimnadia texana. We compare the fertilization rate of outcrossed to selfed eggs to test whether the latter exhibit lower fertilization due to sperm limitation (as in C. elegans). Because this comparison confounds differences in egg fertilization due to sperm limitation with the potential for early inbreeding depression, we also used a third mating treatment, a brother/sister cross, to allow separation of sperm limitation from inbreeding depression. In both populations examined, the proportion of eggs that were fertilized decreased linearly with increasing relatedness: comparing eggs produced by outcrossing, brother/sister, and selfed matings, respectively. This pattern suggests that differences in fertilization among these three treatments were caused solely by inbreeding depression, and therefore that hermaphrodites are not sperm limited. These results are combined with previous data on this species to test whether the maintenance of males can be explained using a population genetics model specifically designed for this species.  相似文献

The pattern of sperm predominance in doubly mated female crickets, Gryllodes supplicans, was investigated using a radiation-sterility technique. Female G. supplicans made significant use of sperm from both males in fertilizing eggs; overall, first males to mate enjoyed a small advantage, fertilizing about 60% of the offspring produced subsequent to the second mating. The combined use of the sperm of both males in fertilizing eggs occurred soon after the second mating; evidently, mixing of ejaculates within a female's spermatheca does occur. Male G. supplicans provide females with a nuptial gift, the spermatophylax, which influences the time at which a female removes the externally attached sperm-ampulla; this in turn determines the quantity of sperm that is transferred. Moreover, the degree of sperm precedence achieved by a male may be positively related to the time at which the female removes his sperm ampulla. Thus males, by feeding females, ensure not only that a sufficient number of sperm are transferred to fertilize all of a female's eggs, but also may increase the certainty of their paternity. In mating systems in which females control sperm transfer and paternity is influenced by numbers of sperm (i.e., numerical sperm competition), an increase in prezygotic investment in females may be an adaptive male response.  相似文献

Ultrastructure of sperm and eggs of the ocean pout (Macrozoarces americanus L.), an internally fertilizing marine teleost, was examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the sperm do not have an acrosome but have a very long mid-piece (one to two times the sperm head length) containing numerous well-developed elongated mitochondria. The sperm also have two tails (is biflagellate) each consisting of nine peripheral and one central pair (9 ± 2) of microtubules. This long mid-piece and the biflagellate nature of the sperm appear to be associated with the long life-span of the sperm and with sperm dispersal in the ovary to fertilize the eggs internally. The ocean pout eggs are enveloped by a porous chorionic membrane similar to that found in other teleosts but have two micropyles, a condition likely related to a mechanism of egg fertilization which increases the egg fertlity in the presence of low sperm numbers. Following insemination, some biochemically undefined excretions appeared on the surface of fertilized eggs and led to the acquisition of adherent capability of the eggs which formed a tightly associated egg mass in sea water. © 1995 wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Unfertilized eggs of the rose bitterling (Rhodeus ocellatus ocellatus) were squeezed out of females that had an elongated ovipositor and were dechorionated mechanically with fine forceps in physiological saline. The dechorionated eggs were transferred into fresh water then inseminated at once by spermatozoa of the same species. A large number of spermatozoa was found on the surface of eggs that had not yet had cortical reaction following insemination. The surface of the naked eggs responded by formation of many small cytoplasmic protrusions (viz., fertilization cones) at sperm attachment sites. The formed fertilization cones were rosettelike structures formed by the aggregation of some bleblike swellings devoid of microvilli and microplicae. About 10 min after insemination, the fertilization cones retracted, but marks of their presence characterized by less microvilli and microplicae remained in the eggs 15 min after insemination. Many spermatozoa penetrated into the cytoplasm of each naked egg. The sperm nuclear envelope disappeared by means of vesiculation resulting from fusion of the inner and outer membranes. The sperm nucleus decondensed and developed into a larger male pronucleus. Smooth-surfaced vesicles surrounded the decondensing sperm nucleus and formed the new male pronuclear envelope. Sperm mitochondria and flagella were found in the egg 15 min after insemination. The response of the egg surface to sperm entry and pronucleus formation are discussed.  相似文献

Intraperitoneal insemination was studied in a total of 58 pigs, both to ascertain the success of this route of sperm deposition with the eventual use of frozen-thawed boar semen in mind and to estimate the timing of capacitation in the absence of uterine exposure of spermatozoa. Ovulation was controlled in mature gilts, and 5–20 ml freshly collected semen containing approximately 108 spermatozoa per ml introduced through the peritoneum either by means of mid-ventral laparotomy or using a 3.5-in (ca. 9 cm) × 18-gauge hypodermic needle.Embryo development to the morula and blastocyst stage appeared chronologically and cytologically normal after intraperitoneal insemination, but the timing of semen deposition was critical: optimal levels of fertilization (60%) arose from insemination in the 12 h preceding ovulation. Fertility was never comparable to that found after natural mating due to the inefficiency of sperm transport into the oviducts and the absence of significant sperm reservoirs. The timing of sperm capacitation after intraperitoneal insemination was not reduced when compared with that found after insemination directly into the oviducts, indicating a negligible contribution of peritoneal exposure to this process. Spermatozoa were not phagocytosed in the oviducts, but rather descended to the uterus at the same time as the developing embryos or degenerating eggs, the sperm flagellum usually being separated from the head by this stage.  相似文献
