Applanation tonometry was used to estimate intraocular pressure (IOP) and Schirmer tear test (STT) I was used to estimate tear production in both eyes of 12 juvenile elands (Taurotragus oryx) and one eye each of 15 Asian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica). Mean (+/- standard deviation) IOP was 14.6 +/- 4.0 mm Hg in the eland and 11.9 +/- 3.3 mm Hg in the deer. Mean tear production was 18.7 +/- 5.9 mm/min in the eland and 10.5 +/- 6.5 mm/min in the deer. The large variation in IOP between two members of the family Bovidae, the elands reported here and the Thomson gazelle (Gazella thomsoni) for which we previously reported a mean pressure of 7.6 mm Hg, illustrates the need to establish reference values for each species. Tear production may be influenced by the species' natural habitat.  相似文献

A total of 51 sera from a migratory population of Burchell's zebras (Equus burchelli) were collected in the Serengeti National Park (Tanzania) between 1999 and 2001 to assess levels of exposure to equine herpesvirus types 1, 2, 4, 9 (EHV-1, -2, -4, -9), EHV-1 zebra isolate T965, and equine arteritis virus (EAV). Using virus-specific neutralizing antibody tests, seroprevalence was high for EHV-9 (60% of 45), moderate for EAV (24% of 51), and lower for the EHV-1-related zebra isolate (17% of 41), EHV-1 (14% of 49), and EHV-4 (2% of 50). No evidence for exposure to EHV-2 was found (0% of 51). The high level of exposure to EHV-9 is interesting because evidence of infection with this virus has not been previously described in any wild equine population. Although the epidemiology of EHV-9 in Burchell's zebras is presently unknown, our results suggest that in East Africa, this species may be a natural host of EHV-9, a neuropathogenic virus that was only recently isolated from captive Thomson's gazelles (Gazella thomsoni) in Japan. There is currently no evidence that EHV-9 induced mortality in Burchell's zebras in the Serengeti, but because of the reported virulence of this virus for more susceptible species such as Thomson's gazelles, viral transmission from infected zebras to ungulates may result in mortality.  相似文献

Several disease syndromes in captive rhinoceroses have been linked to low vitamin status. Blood samples from captive and free-ranging black (Diceros bicornis) and white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) and tissue samples of captive individuals from four rhinoceros species were analysed for vitamins A and E. Circulating vitamin A levels measured as retinol for free-ranging versus captive black and white rhinoceros were 0.04 (+/- 0.03 SD) vs. 0.08 (+/- 0.08) and 0.07 (+/- 0.04) vs. 0.06 (+/- 0.02) microgram/ml, respectively. Circulating vitamin E levels measured as alpha-tocopherol were 0.58 (+/- 0.30) vs. 0.84 (+/- 0.96) and 0.62 (+/- 0.48) vs. 0.77 (+/- 0.32) microgram/ml, respectively. In contrast to earlier findings, there was no significant difference in vitamin E concentration between captive and free-ranging black rhinoceros. When the samples of captive black rhinoceros were grouped into those taken before 1990 and after 1990, however, those collected before 1990 had significantly lower (P < 0.001) vitamin E levels (0.46 +/- 0.83 microgram/ml) and those collected in 1990 or later significantly higher (P < 0.001) vitamin E levels (1.03 +/- 1.04 micrograms/ml) than the captive population as a whole. This is probably due to increased dietary supplementation. There were significant differences in circulating vitamin concentrations in black rhinoceroses from different regions in the wild. Serum 25-hydroxy (OH) vitamin D3 averaged 55.7 ng/ml in free-ranging rhinoceroses; no carotenoids were detected in any blood samples. Captive black and white rhinoceroses appear to be adequately supplemented in vitamin A and E. Captive Indian rhinoceroses (Rhinoceros unicornis) had significantly lower vitamin A concentrations in blood (P < 0.001) and higher vitamin A concentrations in liver tissue samples (P < 0.001) than other rhinoceros species. Muscle glycogenolytic flux and lactate accumulation during exercise are lower after 3-7 days of "short-term" aerobic training (STT) in men (e.g., Green HJ, Helyar R, Ball-Burnett M, Kowalchuk N, Symon S, and Farrance B. J Appl Physiol 72: 484-491, 1992). We hypothesized that 5 days of STT would attenuate pyruvate production and the increase in muscle tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates (TCAI) during exercise, because of reduced flux through the reaction catalyzed by alanine aminotransferase (AAT; pyruvate + glutamate <--> 2-oxoglutarate + alanine). Eight women [22 +/- 1 yr, peak oxygen uptake (Vo2 peak) = 40.3 +/- 4.6 ml. kg-1. min-1] performed seven 45-min bouts of cycle exercise at 70% Vo2 peak over 9 days (1 bout/day; rest only on days 2 and 8). During the first and last bouts, biopsies (vastus lateralis) were obtained at rest and after 5 and 45 min of exercise. Basic biomedical data from 164 neonates of four species of the tribe Hippotragini, addax (Addax nasomaculatus), scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), and sable antelope (Hippotragus niger), were compared at one zoological institution over a 9-year period. Measured biomedical parameters included body weight, temperature, pulse and respiratory rates, packed cell volume (PCV), total plasma protein, glucose, IgG assessment via zinc sulfate turbidity, and white blood cell count with differential. All species were maintained in a semi-free ranging setting with the same diet, available shelter, and opportunity for social interaction. Based on clinical and field observations, all neonates used in the study were believed to be at least 24 hr old, to have bonded with the dam, and to have no obvious physical abnormalities. Median body weights were similar only in the addax and Arabian oryx with sable antelope having the largest median body weight. No significant differences in rectal temperatures or pulse rates were found among species. Median respiratory rates were similar between certain groups. Arabian oryx and scimitar-horned oryx shared the highest packed cell volumes while the sable antelope had the lowest. Sable antelope had the highest median total plasma protein with no significant differences among the other species. Sable were also significantly lower in median blood glucose than the three other Hippotraginae. Zinc sulfate turbidities in all species were similar. Addax had higher median total white blood cell counts than sable. No significant differences in the median numbers of segmented neutrophils, band neutrophils, and eosinophils were detected among species. Basophils were only found in the scimitar-horned oryx in one animal. Addax had higher median lymphocyte counts than sable and Arabian oryx as well as higher median monocyte counts than sable. All four species exhibited higher median counts of neutrophils compared with lymphocytes. Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx) had faced extinction in the wild more than three decades ago and was saved by the prudent efforts of captive breeding programs. A clear understanding of the molecular diversity of contemporary Arabian oryx population is important for the long term success of captive breeding and reintroduction of this potentially endangered species. We have sequenced the segments of mitochondrial DNA including12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, cytochrome b (Cyt-b) and control region (CR) genes of 24 captive-bred and reintroduced animals. Although the sequences of 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA and Cyt-b were found to be identical for all the samples, typical sequence variations in the CR gene were observed in the form of 7 haplotypes. One of these haplotypes has been reported earlier while the remaining 6 haplotypes are novel and represent different lineages from the founders. The haplotype and nucleotide diversities were found to be 0.789 and 0.009 respectively. The genetic distances among the 7 mtDNA haplotypes varied from 0.001 to 0.017. These findings are of potential relevance to the management of captive breeding programs for the conservation of Arabian oryx.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of muscle metaboreflex activation on left circumflex coronary blood flow (CBF), coronary vascular conductance (CVC), and regional left ventricular performance in conscious, chronically instrumented dogs during treadmill exercise before and after the induction of heart failure (HF). In control experiments, muscle metaboreflex activation during mild exercise elicited significant reflex increases in mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output. CBF increased significantly, whereas no significant change in CVC occurred. There was no significant change in the minimal rate of myocardial shortening (-dl/dt(min)) with muscle metaboreflex activation during mild exercise (15.5 +/- 1.3 to 16.8 +/- 2.4 mm/s, P > 0.05); however, the maximal rate of myocardial relaxation (+dl/dt(max)) increased (from 26.3 +/- 4.0 to 33.7 +/- 5.7 mm/s, P < 0.05). Similar hemodynamic responses were observed with metaboreflex activation during moderate exercise, except there were significant changes in both -dl/dt(min) and dl/dt(max). In contrast, during mild exercise with metaboreflex activation during HF, no significant increase in cardiac output occurred, despite a significant increase in heart rate, inasmuch as a significant decrease in stroke volume occurred as well. The increases in mean arterial pressure and CBF were attenuated, and a significant reduction in CVC was observed (0.74 +/- 0.14 vs. 0.62 +/- 0.12 ml x min(-1) x mmHg(-1); P < 0.05). Similar results were observed during moderate exercise in HF. Muscle metaboreflex activation did not elicit significant changes in either -dl/dt(min) or +dl/dt(max) during mild exercise in HF. We conclude that during HF the elevated muscle metaboreflex-induced increases in sympathetic tone to the heart functionally vasoconstrict the coronary vasculature, which may limit increases in myocardial performance.  相似文献

This study was designed to assess the influence of St. Thomas Hospital cardioplegic solution (St. Th.) on heart preservation in rat hearts subjected to 6h ischemia when supplemented with iloprost. In the control group (n=8), nothing was added to St. Th., whereas 10 or 1000 nmol L(-1) iloprost was added in the second (n=7) and third (n=8) groups, respectively. Mechanical contraction parameters, cardiac tissue damage and oxidative stress markers were evaluated. The 10 nmol/L iloprost group peak systolic pressure (71.0+/-30.9 versus 41.0+/-9.4 mm Hg) and -dp/dtmax (1103.8+/-94.3 versus 678.6+/-156.8 mm Hg s(-1)) were significantly higher than control group at 30 min of reperfusion (p<0.05). Iloprost supplemented groups had higher GSH and catalase levels of coronary perfusate at reperfusion, in comparison with initial values (p<0.05). AST, CK, CK-MB values increased at 0 min of reperfusion and cTnI values at 45 min of reperfusion (p<0.05) in all groups with no difference between groups. According to our results, iloprost supplementation had mild but significant improvement in postischemic values in mechanical and oxidative stress parameters, resulting in better heart preservation.  相似文献

Monthly measurements of heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and cardiac output were made on active and hibernating marmots from the time of emergence from hibernation through the next hibernation period. From these measurements cardiac index, stroke index, and total peripheral resistance were calculated on the basis of estimated lean body mass. Heart rate was low after emergence (132 +/- 9.5 beats (B)/min), peaked in August (160 +/- 9.3 B/min), and then fell slightly in September and October. During hibernation heart rate fell to 9 +/- 1.1 B/min. Mean arterial pressure, which was low in early spring (101 +/- 6.9 mm Hg), rose to a peak value in June (131 +/- 7.7 mm Hg) and remained essentially unchanged until hibernation when it fell to 52 +/- 4.0 mm Hg. Cardiac index (61 +/- 4.9 ml/kg min) in March rose to a peak in May (83 +/- 8.5 ml/kg min) and fell linearly until October. There was an additional drop in cardiac index during hibernation (7.6 +/- 0.9 ml/kg min). Total peripheral resistance increased linearly from the time of emergence until October. Most of this change was due to the decrease in cardiac index. Stroke index showed no significant changes in the prehibernation period, but increased by 55% during hibernation. Maintenance of arterial pressure in the months preceding hibernation in the face of diminishing cardiac index indicate that alterations in vasomotor tone or shifts in patterns of blood flow occurred prior to the hibernation period.  相似文献

We have explored the possibility that renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and vasomotor sympathetic nerve activity are differentially regulated. We measured sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) to the kidney and the hind limb vasculature in seven conscious rabbits 6-8 days after the implantation of recording electrodes. Acute infusion of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (6 mg.kg(-1).min(-1) for 5 min) led to an increase in blood pressure (from 66 +/- 1 to 82 +/- 3 mmHg) and a decrease in heart rate (from 214 +/- 15 to 160 +/- 13 bpm). L-NAME administration caused a significantly greater decrease in RSNA than lumbar sympathetic nerve activity (LSNA) (to 68 +/- 14% vs. 84 +/- 4% of control values, respectively). Volume expansion (1.5 ml.kg(-1).min(-1)) resulted in a significant decrease in RSNA to 66 +/- 7% of control levels but no change in LSNA (127 +/- 20%). There was no difference in the gain of the baroreflex curves between the LSNA and RSNA [maximum gain of -7.6 +/- 0.4 normalized units (nu)/mmHg for LSNA vs. -7.9 +/- 0.75 nu/mmHg for RSNA]. A hypoxic stimulus (10% O2 and 3% CO2) led to identical increases in both RSNA and LSNA (195 +/- 40% and 158 +/- 21% of control values, respectively). Ovarian response and pregnancy success in scimitar-horned oryx (n=28) were compared, following treatment with two synchronization protocols and fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) with frozen-thawed semen. Each oryx received two injections of 500 microg of prostaglandin-F(2alpha) analogue (PGF(2alpha)-only) 11 days apart, and half received PGF(2alpha) in combination with an intravaginal progesterone-releasing device (CIDR11+PGF(2alpha)). Semen was collected by electroejaculation from anaesthetised adult oryx and cryopreserved. Anaesthetised females were transcervically inseminated 56.0+/-1.1 h (+/-S.E.M.) after PGF(2alpha) injection and/or device withdrawal using 28.0+/-1.5x10(6) motile thawed sperm. Ovarian endocrine response was monitored in 20 females by analysing faecal oestrogen and progesterone metabolites. Periovulatory oestrogen peaks were detected in 19/20 (95%) females after synchronization. There were no between-treatment differences in oestrogen concentrations or peak characteristics (P0.05). Luteal development after synchronization was delayed in half the progesterone treated (CIDR11+PGF(2alpha)) females, and faecal progestin excretion profiles indicated that the ovulatory follicle associated with synchronization either failed to ovulate or to fully lutenise. Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasonography and/or rectal palpation and was monitored by faecal progestin excretion. More (P=0. 013) pregnancies resulted from the PGF(2alpha)-only treatment (37.5%, 5/14) than from the CIDR11+PGF(2alpha) treatment (0/14), and four healthy scimitar-horned oryx calves were born, three after gestation intervals of 247 days and one after 249 days.  相似文献

Seventeen hematologic values of the American Bison (Bison bison) from five areas of the United States were determined using standard techniques. The means of the principal blood measurements for all bison were 10.08 +/- 1.43 million erythrocytes/mm3, 8.03 +/- 1.41 thousand leukocytes/mm3, 16.92 +/- 1.43 gm % hemoglobin and 47.11 +/- 4.06% hematocrit. There was a significant variation (P less than 0.05) among age groups of males for erythrocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes. However, no significant variation between female age groups or sexes was found for any of the blood cell values determined.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that selenium (Se) deficiency is associated with nutritional myopathy, known as white muscle disease (WMD), in horses. However, correlations between Se deficiency and clinical findings, such as hematologic biochemical values and pathological features, have not been evaluated in captive plains zebras. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the clinical and pathologic features that may be caused by a Se deficiency in the captive plains zebra. Clinical findings, feed analyses, hematologic biochemical analyses, response to treatment, and pathologic examination were assessed in six affected plains zebras. The dietary concentration of Se in feed was also tested. Sudden death occurred in two cases during the first day of the onset of symptoms. Two zebras died at 4 days and two zebras survived after treatment. The clinical signs in affected animals were characterized by general weakness, astasia, and abnormal postural positions. The Se concentration in hay from the breeding stable was low, based on the reference value. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity was lower compared with the equine reference value. Multiple areas of subcutaneous steatitis and pale skeletal muscle and myocardium were revealed at gross necropsy. Degeneration and necrosis of myocardial and skeletal muscles, as well as congestion of the liver, lung, and kidney were found via histopathological examination. No suspected bacterial infections were found. Feed analyses, response to treatment, serum GSH-Px activity, and pathological features suggest that Se deficiency may have caused the disease in the six affected captive plains zebra.  相似文献

Ten patients in sinus rhythm with symptomatic cardiac failure participated in a study investigating the value of digitalis at rest and during dynamic exercise. A haemodynamic profile and left ventricular ejection fraction were measured before treatment, after intravenous ouabain, and after six weeks of maintenance treatment with digoxin. There was no significant change in the haemodynamic profile or in the left ventricular ejection fraction at rest after either glycoside. During exercise there was a significant reduction in left ventricular filling pressure from 39 +/- 3 mm Hg to 34 +/- 3 mm Hg (p less than 0.05) after ouabain and to 33 +/- 3 mm Hg (p less than 0.02) after digoxin. Cardiac index improved from 33 +/- 0.3 1/min/m2 to 4.0 +/- 0.4 l/min/m2 (p less than 0.01) after ouabain and to 3.8 +/- 0.4 l/min/m2 (p less than 0.01) after digoxin. During exercise stroke volume index and stroke work index also improved significantly with both glycosides. This was accompanied by an increase in left ventricular ejection fraction from 29 +/- 2% to 36 +/- 3% (p less than 0.05) after ouabain and digoxin. In this study both intravenous ouabain and maintenance treatment with oral digoxin exerted a modest positive inotropic effect in patients with cardiac failure in sinus rhythm. The haemodynamic benefit, however, was manifest only during exertion.  相似文献

After overnight food and fluid restriction, 8 normal healthy males were examined in the upright sitting position before (prestudy), during and after (recovery) negative pressure breathing (NPB) with a pressure (P = difference between airway pressure and barometric pressure) of -9.6 +/- 0.5 to -10.4 +/- 0.4 mm Hg for 30 min. Plasma arginine vasopressin (pAVP) did not change significantly comparing prestudy with 10 and 30 min of NPB or comparing recovery with NPB at 10, 20 or 30 min. However, at 20 min of NBP, pAVP was slightly lower than at prestudy (p less than 0.05). Central venous pressure (CVP) decreased significantly during NPB, and central transmural venous pressure (CVP-P) increased significantly from -0.9 +/- 0.8 mm Hg to 3.8 +/- 0.7, 4.3 +/- 0.7 and 4.5 +/- 0.6 mm Hg (p less than 0.001) after 10, 20 and 30 min, respectively. Systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure and heart rate did not change significantly during NPB. Diuresis, natriuresis, kaliuresis, osmotic excretion and clearance were slightly increased during the recovery hour after NPB compared to prestudy, while urine osmolality decreased during NPB (n = 6). However, none of these changes were significant. There was no significant correlation between CVP-P and pAVP. In conclusion, -10 mm Hg NPB for 30 min in upright sitting subjects did not change pAVP consistently, while CVP-P was significantly increased and HR and arterial pressures were unchanged. This lends support to the concept that arterial baroreceptors and not cardiopulmonary mechanoreceptors are of importance in regulating AVP secretion in man.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in ovulatory activity, assessed by the measurement of plasma progesterone and plasma prolactin concentrations were monitored in 10 Spanish ibex females captured in the National Wildlife Reserve of Sierra Nevada (South Spain, 37 degrees N). Five of the 10 female ibex showed ovulatory activity with a mean (+/- s.e.m.) duration of the oestrous cycle of 19.4 +/- 1 days (range: 17-23 days). On average, the five cyclic females weighed 28 +/- 0.9 kg. Progesterone cycles occurred only in animals older than 4 years of age. Ovulatory activity extended from December to January. The duration of the breeding season was 43.2 +/- 7.7 days. Ibex females younger than 4 years of age had a body weight lower (P < 0.01 ) than that of adults and none of them displayed ovulations. Plasma concentrations of prolactin levels were significantly affected by season (P < 0.05), following a trend that was roughly parallel to daylength. The highest values occurred in the spring (119.7 +/- 21.4 ng x mL(-1)) and the summer (139.3 +/- 19.8 ng x mL(-1)), the lowest values in the autumn (26 +/- 7.4 ng x mL(-1)) and in the winter (19.7 +/- 3.2 ng x mL(-1)). Our results showed a very restricted breeding season, despite the fact that the Spanish ibex originates from and lives in a temperate latitude, revealing a remarkably good adaptation to the harsh climatic and nutritional conditions of their mountainous habitat.  相似文献

The effects of endurance training (running 40 m/min grade for 60 min, 5 days/wk for 8 wk) on skeletal muscle lactate removal was studied in rats by utilizing the isolated hindlimb perfusion technique. Hindlimbs were perfused (single-pass) with Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer, fresh bovine erythrocytes (hematocrit approximately 30%), 10 mM lactate, and [U-14C]lactate (30,000 dpm/ml). Arterial and venous blood samples were collected every 10 min for the duration of the experiment to assess lactate uptake. During perfusions, no significant differences in skeletal muscle lactate uptake were observed between trained (7.31 +/- 0.20 micromol/min) and control hindlimbs (6.98 +/- 0.43 micromol/min). In support, no significant differences were observed for [14C]lactate uptake in trained (22,776 +/- 370 dpm/min) compared with control hindlimbs (21,924 +/- 1,373 dpm/min). Concomitant with these observations, no significant differences were observed between groups for oxygen consumption (4.93 +/- 0.18 vs. 4.92 +/- 0.13 micromol/min), net skeletal muscle glycogen synthesis (7.1 +/- 0.4 vs. 6.5 +/- 0.3 micromol x 40 min(-1) x g(-1)), or 14CO2 production (2,203 +/- 185 vs. 2,098 +/- 155 dpm/min), trained and control, respectively. These findings indicate that endurance training does not affect lactate uptake or alter the metabolic fate of lactate in quiescent skeletal muscle.  相似文献

Health surveys and hematologic and plasma biochemical analyses were conducted in 52 free-ranging and 51 captive Morelet's crocodiles (Crocodylus moreletii) in Campeche, Mexico, March-September 2007. Blood samples from 92 crocodiles (45 free-ranging and 47 captive) were collected for hematologic and plasma biochemical analyses. Average values of erythrocytes of free-ranging crocodiles were 1,046,166 cells/μl, and total white cells were 1.03 × 10(4) cells/μl. Captive crocodiles had erythrocyte and leukocyte values of 1,100,416 cells/μl and 8.51 × 10(3) cells/μl, respectively. There were no significant differences in values of erythrocytes or in hematocrit between free-ranging and captive crocodiles, or between sexes, or among size classes. Counts of leukocytes in free-ranging crocodiles were significantly higher than in captive individuals. The mean values of plasma analytes were 69.55 mg/l (glucose), 250.14 mg/l (cholesterol), 3.04 mg/l (uric acid), 2.70 mg/l (creatinine), and 20.20 IU/l (alanine aminotransferase). There were significant differences in cholesterol between free-ranging and captive crocodiles and between sexes.  相似文献
