This study investigates whether the process of pressing and drying a macrophyte host affects community structure and composition of epiphytic diatom communities. Epiphytic diatoms on submerged macrophytes from carbonate rivers and streams in southern Bavaria, Germany were sampled in order to study community structure and composition. Simultaneously, a specimen of the submerged macrophyte was taken to create a collection of dried plants. After 6months of preservation, diatom samples were taken from the herbarium macrophytes. Detrended correspondence analysis, diversity and evenness results indicate that recent and dried communities are indistinguishable. These results suggest that epiphytic diatom communities sampled from historic herbarium macrophytes can be utilised as bioindicators to assess former water quality.  相似文献

We evaluated how changes in nutrient supply altered the composition of epiphytic and benthic microalgal communities in a Thalassia testudinum (turtle grass) bed in Florida Bay. We established study plots at four sites in the bay and added nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to the sediments in a factorial design. After 18, 24, and 30 months of fertilization we measured the pigment concentrations in the epiphytic and benthic microalgal assemblages using high performance liquid chromatography. Overall, the epiphytic assemblage was P-limited in the eastern portion of the bay, but each phototrophic group displayed unique spatial and temporal responses to N and P addition. Epiphytic chlorophyll a, an indicator of total microalgal load, and epiphytic fucoxanthin, an indicator of diatoms, increased in response to P addition at one eastern bay site, decreased at another eastern bay site, and were not affected by P or N addition at two western bay sites. Epiphytic zeaxanthin, an indicator of the cyanobacterial/coralline red algae complex, and epiphytic chlorophyll b, an indicator of green algae, generally increased in response to P addition at both eastern bay sites but did not respond to P or N addition in the western bay. Benthic chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, fucoxanthin, and zeaxanthin showed complex responses to N and P addition in the eastern bay, suggesting that the benthic assemblage is limited by both N and P. Benthic assemblages in the western bay were variable over time and displayed few responses to N or P addition. The contrasting nutrient limitation patterns between the epiphytic and benthic communities in the eastern bay suggest that altering nutrient input to the bay, as might occur during Everglades restoration, can shift microalgal community structure, which may subsequently alter food web support for upper trophic levels.  相似文献

Summary An analysis of phosphorus concentrations and standing stocks in the various components of a dense Potamogeton pectinatus L. community in a brackish lake showed that the amounts of P per unit area varied in the following order: Sediments > Above ground macrophytes > Detritus > Benthic Invertebrates > Below ground macrophyte tissue > Epiphytic algae > Water soluble P > Water borne particulate P. Seasonal changes in the variability of these stocks are described, and shown to be controlled by the annual growth and decomposition pattern of the Potamogeton. The sediments were suggested as the major source of P for the plant biomass. Studies using 32P tracer showed that of a given input of P to the water, 32% went to large epiphytic algae, 17% to the Potamogeton, 16% to the benthic fauna (mostly filter feeding bivalves), 28% to the sediments (almost all incorporated in the top 1 cm), and the remaining 7% was adsorbed on to, or absorbed by microorganisms associated with detritus. Analysis of 32P uptake curves indicated that of the P absorbed by the Potamogeton, a significant proportion went to the complex adnate periphyton on the leaf surface. We were unable to separate this fraction. Movement of P in the community was shown to be a closed cycle, and any release of P from decaying macrophytes would be rapidly reabsorbed by epiphytic algae. It is unlikely that phosphorus, once cycling in the macrophyte community, would become transferred to the circulation in the open lake.  相似文献

Water use patterns of two species of strangler fig, Ficus pertusa and F. trigonata, growing in a Venezuelan palm savanna were contrasted in terms of growth phase (epiphyte and tree) and season (dry and wet). The study was motivated by the question of how C3 hemiepiphytes accommodate the marked change in rooting environment associated with a life history of epiphytic establishment followed by substantial root development in the soil. During the dry season, stomatal opening in epiphytic plants occurred only during the early morning, maximum stomatal conductances were 5 to 10-fold lower, and midday leaf water potentials were 0.5–0.8 MPa higher (less negative) than in conspecific trees. Watering epiphytes of F. pertusa during the dry season led to stomatal conductances comparable to those exhibited by conspecific trees, but midday leaf water potentials were unchanged. During the rainy season, epiphytes had lower stomatal conductances than conspecific trees, but leaf water potentials were similar between the two growth phases. There were no differences in 13C between the two growth phases for leaves produced in either season. Substrate water availability differed between growth phases; tree roots extended down to the permanent water table, while roots of epiphytic plants were restricted to material accumulated behind the persistent leaf bases of their host palm tree, Copernicia tectorum. Epiphytic substrate moisture contents were variable during both seasons, indicating both the availability of some moisture during the dry season and the possibility of intermittent depletion during the rainy season. Epiphytic strangler figs appear to rely on a combination of strong stomatal control, maintenance of high leaf water potentials, and perhaps some degree of stem water storage to cope with the fluctuating water regime of the epiphytic environment.  相似文献

  • 1 The resistance and resilience of littoral zone communities to sedimentation will depend both on the extent to which sediment deposition affects productivity, and on interactions within the communities. A series of hypotheses were set up and tested to examine interactions and feedback mechanisms among deposited sediments, periphyton, macrophytes and grazers in a large oligotrophic lake subject to fluctuating sediment loadings.
  • 2 Although sediments incorporated into periphyton reduced light availability to macrophytes, periphytic algae were generally the dominant light absorbing component under natural conditions. When grazers were absent, both sediments incorporated in the periphyton and periphytic algal densities increased, and both were then important in reducing light available to macrophytes.
  • 3 Grazing rate and assimilation efficiency for the dominant grazer, the prosobranch gastropod Potamopyrgus antipodarum, increased with increasing sediment content under natural lake conditions to reach a maximum at 10 mg sediment cm?2.
  • 4 An increase in sediment incorporation into periphyton films resulted in an increased grazing rate and hence grooming of sediments from macrophytes.
  • 5 Grazing invertebrates can play a major role in maintenance of littoral communities by continuously grooming macrophyte hosts of periphytic algae and settled sediments.

SUMMARY. 1. Quantities and the chemical composition of epiphyton on the roots of floating aquatic macrophytes were measured in Lake Calado, an Amazon floodplain lake. Growth of epiphytic algae following physical disturbance and losses of epiphyton due to grazing and storms were investigated.
2. Deposition of silt from invading river water decreased chlorophyll and nutrient content (%C, %N, %P) of epiphyton during rising water. N:P ratios of epiphyton indicated that proximity to the river increased supplies of phosphorus. Attached algal biomass per unit root tissue was higher overall during the falling water period, when light was greater, storms less frequent, and new host plant tissue produced more slowly.
3. Epiphytic algal biomass at the margins of floating meadows exceeded that of the phytoplankton in the open water on a per unit area basis. Increases in attached algal chlorophyll ranged from two- to ten-fold over 1 week. Artificial denudation of roots was followed by rapid regrowth of attached algae, leading, after I week, to four-fold increases in chlorophyll over the pre-denuded state.
4. Wind-blown macrophytes experienced an episodic loss of 70% of epiphytic material in less than 1 h. Particulate material lost from roots grazed by snails included root tissue and contained significantly more carbon than material lost from ungrazed roots.  相似文献

Feeding selectivity by five epilithic, case-building trichopteran species from a first-order stream was examined using laboratory experiments. Larvae had the choice of three food types: periphyton and detritus from the stream, and nettle broth as an artificial food source. Food type influenced the microdistribution of these species. Larvae were able to distinguish between different food types and showed species-specific responses to the various types of food. Drusus annulatus, Micrasema longulum and Apatania fimbriata favoured periphyton, while Agapetus fuscipes and Silo pallipes showed no preference for periphyton over detritus. Four of the five species examined (Apatania fimbriata was the exception) tended to avoid nettle broth. The complexity of foraging behaviour was illustrated by M. longulum. Given a choice between detritus, periphyton and periphyton with the addition of moss, they clearly preferred the latter food type, scraping mostly on the epiphytic algae. Proportions of a given species selecting periphyton were correlated with percentage areas of algae in the gut contents of that species in the field. D. annulatus, M. longulum and A. fimbriata showed the greatest preference for periphyton, and consumed the highest proportions of algae in the field. A. fuscipes and S. pallipes often selected detritus, and these species had the lowest proportions of algae, and the highest proportions of detritus, in their guts.  相似文献

In rocky littoral communities, intense herbivory allows for the occurrence of trophic cascades where higher trophic levels influence producer communities. Invasive predators can be especially effective in imposing trophic cascades. The North American mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii is a recent invader in the Baltic Sea, with an expanding distribution range. Here, we document the effects of mud crab on the native invertebrate community associated with the key foundation species Fucus vesiculosus. During the initial 3 years of invasion, mud crab abundance in F. vesiculosus increased from 2 % to about 25 % of the algae being inhabited by crabs. Simultaneously, the invertebrate community underwent a major transition: Species richness and diversity dropped as a consequence of decreasing abundance and the loss of certain taxa. The abundance of gastropods decreased by 99 % and that of crustaceans by 75 %, while chironomids completely disappeared. Consequently, the community dominated earlier by herbivorous and periphyton-grazing gastropods and crustaceans shifted to a mussel dominated community with overall low abundances of herbivores. At the same time filamentous epiphytic algae prospered and the growth rate of F. vesiculosus decreased. We suggest that this shift in the invertebrate community may have far reaching consequences on ecosystem functioning. These arise through changes in the strength of producer–herbivore interaction, caused by mud crab predation on the dominating grazer taxa. This interaction is a major determinant of ecological function of ecosystems, i.e. productivity and energy flow to higher trophic levels. Therefore, the decrease in herbivory can be expected to have a major structuring role in producer communities of the rocky littoral macroalgal assemblages.  相似文献
