This study focuses on the relationships between plant dispersal syndromes and plant distributions at the community scale. Species composition and cover are reported from 29 10 × 20-m vegetation plots along five topographic cross-sections in the riparian zone of the Hassayampa River Preserve, Arizona. We find that spatial patterns of dispersal guilds vary within the flood plain of this semiarid region river. Our main results are: (1) wind-dispersed species are fairly evenly distributed at all elevations and distances from the river, whereas cover of animal-dispersed species increases with elevation above, and at greater distances from, the river; (2) wind-dispersed species are proportionally more abundant in the pioneer Populus–Salix community, whereas plants in the late-seral Prosopis community are predominantly animal-dispersed; (3) most of the species classified as obligate-wetland and facultative-wetland are wind-dispersed, whereas facultative-upland and obligate-upland species are mostly animal-dispersed; and (4) there are significantly fewer wind-dispersed species in areas of high total vegetation cover. These results may reflect successional patterns resulting from periodic flooding. Low areas close to the river flood more frequently and with greater intensity than areas farther from the river. Many pioneer species that establish in disturbed areas are wind-dispersed. Over successional time, pioneer species cede to more drought tolerant species that are predominantly animal-dispersed.  相似文献

Seedling and sapling dynamics in a Puerto Rican rain forest were compared between forest understory and soil pits created by the uprooting of 27 trees during Hurricane Hugo. Soil N and P, organic matter, and soil moisture were lower and bulk densities were higher in the disturbed mineral soils of the pits than in undisturbed forest soils ten months after the hurricane. No differences in N and P levels were found in pit or forest soils under two trees with N–fixing symbionts (Inga laurina and Ormosia krugii) compared to soils under a tree species without N–fixing sym–bionts (Casearia arborea), but other soil variables (Al, Fe, K) did vary by tree species. Forest plots had greater species richness of seedlings (<10 cm tall) and saplings (10–100 cm tall) than plots in the soil pits (and greater sapling densities), but seedling densities were similar between plot types. Species richness and seedling densities did not vary among plots associated with the three tree species, but some saplings were more abundant under trees of the same species. Pit size did not affect species richness or seedling and sapling densities. Recruitment of young Cecropia schreberiana trees (>5 m tall) 45 months after the hurricane was entirely from the soil pits, with no tree recruitment from forest plots. Larger soil pits had more tree recruitment than smaller pits. Defoliation of the forest by the hurricane created a large but temporary increase in light availability. Recruitment of C. schreberiana to the canopy occurred in gaps created by the treefall pits that had lower soil nutrients but provided a longer–term increase in light availability. Treefall pits also significantly altered the recruitment and mortality of many understory species in the Puerto Rican rain forest but did not alter species richness.  相似文献

The quality of seed treatment by frugivores has an effect on seed removal after dispersal, seed germination and tree recruitment. We provide information on postdispersal seed removal, germination and subsequent recruitment in tropical forest tree species Antiaris toxicaria in Ghana. We tested whether postdispersal seed removal and germination rates were differentially affected by the following seed treatments: seeds that were spat out by monkeys with all fruit pulp removed and spitting seeds with fruit pulp partially removed as observed in some birds and bats. We used seeds of intact ripened fruits as control. Frugivore seed treatment and distance from bole affected seed removal patterns, whereas intact seeds were significantly removed from all seed stations. The germination success was greater for seeds that were spat out by monkeys and poor for seeds with fruit pulp partially removed and intact fruits. More recruits were recorded at the edge of the adult A. toxicaria canopy radius. There was weak relationship (r2 = 0.042) between the number of recruits and distance away from the adult tree. Results suggest that the subsequent recruitment in tropical forest tree species may be enhanced by some frugivore fruit‐handling behaviour where fruit pulp is removed from the seeds without destroying the seeds.  相似文献

Stand dynamics was studied over 13 years in a cool-temperate conifer-hardwood forest, northern Japan. A total 30 hardwood species and one conifer, Abies sachalinensis, larger than 1.5 cm DBH were recorded. The total stand density was 1677 trees ha−1 at the beginning, decreasing to 1184 trees ha−1 (30% reduction) over the study period, but the total stand basal area was almost unchanged (about 49 m2 ha−1). This large reduction in total density was mainly due to the death of saplings and infrequent recruitment. Number of recruits gradually decreased with time, while that of dead trees was constant. Cause of death of small trees was mainly due to suppression by tall trees. Skewness of the DBH frequency distribution varied among the species. A less skewed frequency distribution (i.e., few number of saplings) was shown by shade-intolerant species such as Populus maximowiczii and Betula maximowicziana, and a more skewed frequency distribution (i.e., large number of saplings) by shade-tolerant species such as Acer mono and Tilia japonica. DBH frequency distribution changed to less skewed patterns with reduction of density in most species during the census period. Rank of shade tolerance positively correlated with tree density and skewness, and negatively correlated with mean DBH. Skewness also positively correlated with recruitment rates. Furthermore, rank of shade tolerance positively correlated with seed size. These results suggest that shade-intolerant species regenerated immediately after disturbances by wide dispersal of small seeds, but their recruitment was interrupted after that. By contrast, shade-tolerant species were able to recruit even after the ceasation of recruitment of shade-intolerant species, but suffered severe mortality due to the increasing shading with the progress of stand development. This study suggests that the stand is still developing, with changes in species composition and size structure, and that species differences in shade tolerance and seed size are important for the stand structural changes.  相似文献

Recruitment success is one of the factors that may be influencing the slow population recovery of Diadema antillarum at many locations in the Caribbean. D. antillarum recruitment was measured with recruitment plates at monthly intervals from September 2005 to September 2006 at three reefs along an inshore-offshore gradient in La Parguera, Puerto Rico. A total of 275 recruits of D. antillarum were collected at the shelf-edge reef during this 13-month study. Two recruits were collected at the mid-shelf reef and no recruits were collected at the inner shelf reef. Recruitment varied among months at the shelf-edge, with the highest value (1,067 ind/m2) occurring in July 2006. Previous benthic surveys in the La Parguera region have demonstrated higher densities of adult D. antillarum at inshore reefs. The higher recruitment at the shelf-edge suggests that recruitment is not a major determinant of the spatial distribution of the adult population. Recruitment occurring in this study is indicative that sources of larvae were available upstream and larval survival was occurring.  相似文献

Aerial seed banks are potentially the main source of sexual recruitment for woody wetland plants. Whilst the importance of soil seed banks for the persistence and recruitment of wetland plants has been examined in many studies, the role of aerial seed banks has been largely neglected. We used seed traps and the seedling emergence technique to quantify the seed rain from aerial seed banks of the Swamp Paperbark Melaleuca ericifolia Sm. (Myrtaceae) in Dowd Morass, a Ramsar-listed, brackish-water wetland in south-eastern Australia. Nine plant species germinated from material collected in seed traps over 2004–2005, but emergents were dominated (80–97%) by M. ericifolia. The mean number of M. ericifolia emergents ranged from <1 to <100 seedlings m−2 day−1, and showed a peak in the summer–autumn period. Regression analysis showed a significant negative correlation (r 2 = 0.738) between the number of M. ericifolia emergents and water depth. Water depth and salinity were negatively correlated (r 2 = 0.819), and increases in the number of M. ericifolia emergents as water levels fell were also associated with high salinities. Increasing air temperature and vapour pressure deficit also stimulated seed release during periods of drying. This study is one of the first to demonstrate the importance of aerial seed banks for sexual recruitment in woody wetland plants and the release of seed in relation to environmental factors. Aerial seed banks warrant consideration alongside soil seed banks for the establishment and long-term survival of woody plants in wetlands. Handling editor: Luis Mauricio Bini  相似文献

We used parentage analysis to estimate seedling recruitment distances and genetic composition of seedling patches centred around reproductive trees of the animal-dispersed Neotropical canopy palm Iriartea deltoidea in two 0.5 ha plots within second-growth forest and one 0.5 ha plot in adjacent old-growth forest at La Selva Biological Field Station in north-eastern Costa Rica. Seedlings were significantly spatially aggregated in all plots, but this pattern was not due to dispersal limitation. More than 70 per cent of seedlings were dispersed at least 50 m from parent trees. Few seedlings were offspring of the closest reproductive trees. Seedling patches observed beneath reproductive trees originate from dozens of parental trees. Observed patterns of seedling distribution and spatial genetic structure are largely determined by the behaviour of vertebrate seed dispersers rather than by spatial proximity to parental trees.  相似文献

Settlement and recruitment rates, biological interactions, environmental parameters, and larval supply are factors that influence community structure in areas where barnacles and mussels are the dominant fauna. This study modeled the succession populations of two barnacle species, Tetraclita stalactifera (Lamarck, 1818) and Chthamalus bisinuatus (Pilsbry, 1916), and a bivalve, Brachidontes solisianus (d’Orbigny, 1846), on a sandstone reef at Piedade Beach, Pernambuco State, Brazil. The different stages of the life cycles of these invertebrates are represented by adult and immature forms in this model and are simulated as numbers of individuals per 100 cm2. Recruitment rates are represented as forcing functions based on field recruitment experiments with time-steps of 1 day. In addition to intraspecific competition, the model takes into account interspecific competition based on reciprocal effects and carrying capacities. Field data from field succession experiments were used to calibrate the model. Recruitment and succession data were collected from random 10 × 10-cm plots within a 1-m transect on a Brachidontes bed from April to December 2007. Correlation coefficients between field data and simulation results were statistically significant for both populations; sensitivity analysis showed that increases and decreases in invertebrate population densities were always smaller than 10% compared to baseline model values. Patch closure by mussels population growth was one of the main succession processes observed during the rainy season. However, barnacles were the dominant species at the end of both field and simulation succession experiments, with an average density of close to 100 individuals per 100 cm2. Cirripedia individuals may inhibit bivalve re-colonization by settling over shells and more efficiently occupying free space in addition to having higher recruitment rates than bivalves during the dry season.  相似文献

Culturable fungi from 28 fungal communities were isolated from soil, rhizosphere and thick (1 cm diam.) roots of living beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees and their stumps 1–3 years after felling. All fungi were morphotyped and identified morphologically. The frequency of fungi was 2–5× greater in stumps than in living trees. The diversity of fungi was similar in living trees and stumps. The majority of fungal species that occurred at greater frequency on/in roots of stumps reduced the growth of Armillaria ostoyae and to a smaller extent of A. gallica rhizomorphs in a soil substrate in vitro. It is suggested that the mycobiota of roots may constrain the colonization of F. sylvatica by A. ostoyae rather than by A. gallica. The significance of these findings in the epidemiology of Armillaria in beech forests is discussed.  相似文献

Will increased fruit and seed production in a severely pollination-limited orchid stimulate population growth? We tested whether safe sites for germination and seedling establishment are limiting for the twig epiphyte, Tolumnia variegata, by manipulating fruit set and monitoring subsequent seedling establishment for two seasons (1991–1992, 1992–1993). In the Cambalache Forest Reserve of Puerto Rico, we established 36 plots along a transect. Each plot consisted of nine trees. A center tree was designated as the site for attaching Tolumnia and manipulating fruit set. The other eight potential host trees were 1–3 and 3–5 m from the center tree in each of the cardinal directions. A 1-m length of stem 1 m from the ground was monitored for recruits on each of the nine trees of 24 fruit-enhanced plots and 12 controls (23 and 13, respectively for the 1992–1993 season). Fruit enhancement plots were divided among two treatments: one-fruit and five-fruit additions for the 1st year and one to five and more than five fruits for the 2nd year. Availability of suitable host species was not limiting. T. variegata showed little specificity for host tree species, good host trees and shrubs were common, and there was no evidence that the orchid had a preference for small branches, despite possessing the entire suite of characteristics thought to respresent “obligate” twig epiphytes. Fruit enhancement increased seed rain and seedling establishment consistently in only the high-fruit treatment plots. Most recruitment occurred near fruiting plants. Over the 2-year period, mortality was 18% for adults and 85.5% for the 1991–1992 cohort of recruits. Net recruitment was positive for both the treatment (average = 1.74) and control plots (average = 0.67). Seedling establishment at our study site was not microsite-limited. If selection for increased pollinator attraction occurs, then an increase in seed output should result in population growth.  相似文献

Montane conifers of western North America commonly colonize mineral surfaces resulting from landslides, lahars, mudflows, and rock avalanches. This colonization can include shade-tolerant conifers that may eventually dominate the forest in a pattern termed “direct” succession. Documenting examples of this long-term successional process are useful for identifying alternative successional trajectories and indicating potential controlling mechanisms for subsequent experimental analysis. This study (1) analyzes the 1992 status of the conifer colonization on the coarse-textured surface of a 1650 AD rock avalanche in northern California and (2) measures individual growth and survivorship in permanent plots between 1992 and 2003. Increment cores of large trees indicated initial conifer colonization before 1700 AD with continuous subsequent colonization. Mean conifer density in 1992 was 725 (SD = 747) ha−1 with densities increasing with decreasing rock sizes. Densities were not correlated with distances to possible seed sources. Median heights were <1 m, and the mean proportional height growth rate for healthy individuals was 0.0166 year−1. The mortality rate for individuals ≥0.1-m tall was <0.007 year−1. The conifers were more numerous than shrubs, and there was little apparent evidence of facilitation or inhibition of conifers. The species assemblage is mostly (89%) Abies concolor, Pinus monticola, and Pinus ponderosa individuals dispersed across an elevation range of 1870–2040 m a. s. l. This is an atypical species mix for these elevations in this location, and this mix is not readily predicted from species properties such as seed mass, seed flight distance, or drought tolerance.  相似文献

Variations in species richness and diversity at a local scale are affected by a number of complex and interacting variables, including both natural environmental factors and human-made changes to the local environment. Here we identified the most important determinants of woody species richness and diversity at different growth stages (i.e. adult, sapling and seedling) in a bamboo–deciduous forest in northeast Thailand. A total of 20 environmental and human disturbance variables were used to determine the variation in species richness and diversity. In total, we identified 125 adult, 111 sapling (within fifty 20 × 20-m plots) and 89 seedling species (within one hundred and twenty 1 × 1-m subplots). Overall results from stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that environmental variables were by far the most important in explaining the variation in species richness and diversity. Forest structure (i.e. number of bamboo clumps and canopy cover) was important in determining the adult species richness and diversity (R 2 = 0.48, 0.30, respectively), while topography (i.e. elevation) and human disturbance (i.e. number of tree stumps) were important in determining the sapling species richness and diversity (R 2 = 0.55, 0.39, respectively). Seedling species richness and diversity were negatively related to soil phosphorus. Based on our results, we suggest that the presence of bamboos should be incorporated in management strategies for maintaining woody species richness and diversity in these forest ecosystems. Specifically, if bamboos cover the forest floor at high densities, it may be necessary to actively control these species for successful tree establishment.  相似文献

Logging and hunting are two key direct threats to the survival of wildlife in the tropics, and also disrupt important ecosystem processes. We investigated the impacts of these two factors on the different stages of the seed dispersal cycle, including abundance of plants and their dispersers and dispersal of seeds and recruitment, in a tropical forest in north-east India. We focused on hornbills, which are important seed dispersers in these forests, and their food tree species. We compared abundances of hornbill food tree species in a site with high logging and hunting pressures (heavily disturbed) with a site that had no logging and relatively low levels of hunting (less disturbed) to understand logging impacts on hornbill food tree abundance. We compared hornbill abundances across these two sites. We, then, compared the scatter-dispersed seed arrival of five large-seeded tree species and the recruitment of four of those species. Abundances of hornbill food trees that are preferentially targeted by logging were two times higher in the less disturbed site as compared to the heavily disturbed site while that of hornbills was 22 times higher. The arrival of scatter-dispersed seeds was seven times higher in the less disturbed site. Abundances of recruits of two tree species were significantly higher in the less disturbed site. For another species, abundances of younger recruits were significantly lower while that of older recruits were higher in the heavily disturbed site. Our findings suggest that logging reduces food plant abundance for an important frugivore-seed disperser group, while hunting diminishes disperser abundances, with an associated reduction in seed arrival and altered recruitment of animal-dispersed tree species in the disturbed site. Based on our results, we present a conceptual model depicting the relationships and pathways between vertebrate-dispersed trees, their dispersers, and the impacts of hunting and logging on these pathways.  相似文献

We measured seed germination and seedling survivorship of spotted knapweed, Centaurea stoebe, in a series of laboratory and field experiments to evaluate the efficacy of seed limitation as a management focus. This work was initiated 6 years after introduction of several biological control agents. The soil seed bank of the site used in this study contained a mean density of 5,848 seeds/m2 (ranging from 0 to 16,364 seeds/m2), and 92% of the seeds isolated from soils were shriveled, discolored, and/or partially decayed. Additionally, none of the intact seeds germinated, suggesting that the viable seed bank at our field study site has been exhausted. Centaurea stoebe seeds were planted into pots under a range of soil nitrogen (N) availability, with half of the pots containing a single density of previously established seedlings of a native cool-season grass, slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus). A watering regime mimicking local precipitation was applied. Spotted knapweed exhibited large biomass responses to N addition, but the presence of grasses suppressed the ability to exploit this N. Surprisingly, low soil N conditions improved knapweed survivorship in the presence of grasses. Nevertheless, recruitment and biomass were still far below the levels reached in the absence of competition. To evaluate the effect of density on successful recruitment, Centaurea stoebe seed was introduced into a meadow at three densities matching reduced levels of seed production under the constraints of seed predators. These densities were sown with or without a seed mixture of native species, into an existing plant community lacking C. stoebe, and seedling recruitment was recorded over 2.5 years. Across all plots and densities sown (568–2,272 seeds m−2 year−1), seedling recruitment was less than 1%. The invasion potential of spotted knapweed was greatly diminished when realistic levels of plant competition and biological control limit seed production. We therefore conclude that a combination of seed limitation and shortage of ‘safe sites’ within undisturbed vegetation can limit densities of C. stoebe.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal variability of scleractinian coral recruitment was investigated from December 2000 to December 2003 around Moorea Island (French Polynesia). Nine stations, each with 20 terracotta tiles, were placed on the outer reef slope, at 3 sites (Vaipahu, Tiahura, Haapiti), and at 3 depths (6, 12 and 18 m). The relative contribution of the different families of recruits (Pocilloporidae: 60.4%, Poritidae: 18.8%, Acroporidae: 11.2%) and the very low recruitment rates (maximum: 35 recruits per tile, higher mean densities of 10.8 recruits per tile, average 40.77 recruits m− 2 year− 1) recorded at Moorea are similar to recruitment patterns recorded on sub-tropical reefs. Over the duration of the study period, we detected a marked seasonal variability in recruitment rates, with the peak recruitment for all families recorded in December-March periods, corresponding to periods of warmest SSTs. However, recruits of Acroporidae were also relatively abundant in the September-December period in some years, which coincides with the known spawning periods of some Acropora species. Total recruitment rate decreased after the first year of the survey, and was probably the result of the bleaching event that occurred in early 2002, which may have reduced fecundity of some coral populations. A lower proportion of recruits were found on the upper surface of the tiles (14.5%), compared to the lower surfaces (57.1%) and sides (28.4%), which is likely the result of intense grazing by herbivorous fish and urchins. We detected a patchy distribution at the station scale, and a significant variation in recruitment patterns among depths and sites. Pocilloporidae recruited more abundantly at 6 and 18 m, whereas Poritidae were generally more abundant at 12 m depth. In contrast, Acroporidae showed no clear depth pattern during the study period. Recruitment was lowest at the most exposed site (Haapiti), especially for Acroporidae, and probably reflects lower settlement rates and/or higher early post-settlement mortality caused by frequent high swells and their associated strong currents. These distinctive characteristics in recruitment patterns of the 3 dominant families of recruits underline the important role of life history strategies in understanding the spatial patterns, dynamics and maintenance processes of coral populations. The relatively low coral recruitment rates recorded from this study indicate that recovery from severe or frequent perturbations will be slow.

We investigated the role of seed predation by rodents in the recruitment of the fleshy-fruited trees Taxus baccata, Ilex aquifolium and Crataegus monogyna in temperate secondary forests in NW Spain. We measured the densities of dispersed seeds, early emerged seedlings, established recruits and adults, at four sites over a period of 2 years. Seed predation among species was compared by seed removal experiments and analysis of rodent larder-hoards. The three species differed markedly in local regeneration patterns. The rank order in the seed rain following decreasing seed density was Ilex, Taxus and Crataegus. However, Crataegus established 3.3 times more seedlings than Taxus. For all species, there was a positive linear relationship between the density of emerged seedlings and seed density, suggesting that recruitment was seed- rather than microsite-limited. A consistent pattern of seed selection among species was exerted by rodents, which preferred Taxus and, secondarily, Ilex seeds to Crataegus seeds. Predation ranking was the inverse of that of seed protection against predators, measured as the mass of woody coat per mass unit of the edible fraction. Recruitment potential, evaluated as the ratio of seedlings to seeds, was negatively related to seed predation, with the rank order Crataegus > Ilex > Taxus. The selective early recruitment limitation exerted by predation may have a demographic effect in the long term, as judged by the positive relationship between early seedling emergence and the density of established recruits. By modulating the pre-emptive competition for seed safe sites, rodents may preclude the progressive exclusion of species that produce low numbers of seeds (i.e. Crataegus) by those dominant in seed number (i.e. Ilex, Taxus), or at least foster the evenness for site occupation among seedlings of different species.  相似文献

Recruitment limitation in canopy trees is receiving increasing attention as restoration of tree cover for connectivity, biodiversity offsets, carbon‐trading and improved catchment health becomes more prominent. Recruitment limitation is often addressed by examining seed traits and germination requirements. Distance between trees is also often explored as a factor, particularly in agricultural landscapes where forest structure has been altered, with large distances between fragments generating Allee effects linked to pollen limitation. Fewer studies have examined how short distances between trees (high stem densities), which can characterize regenerated forests, might affect recruitment. This study examined recruitment limitation by exploring germination requirements of Eucalyptus tricarpa (red ironbark) and the effects of stem density on seed characters and germination. Eucalyptus tricarpa is a canopy species in the box‐ironbark forests of central Victoria, Australia. During the early European settlement phase in the 1800s these forests were heavily impacted by human disturbances including mining, logging and livestock grazing. In many regenerated stands, now more than 100 years old, current stem density exceeds those documented in 19th century reports and there is little regeneration of key canopy species such as E. tricarpa. In laboratory trials seed germinated at 18°C in darkness, and while viability varied among populations, overall it remained high (91–96%) and did not differ among populations with different stem densities. An in situ germination trial addressing sowing season, ground‐cover, soil‐ripping, canopy‐cover and stem density recorded no germination. High stem density in coppicing box‐ironbark forest was hypothesized to limit resources for reproduction; however, no relationship was found between nearest neighbour distance, allocation to selected reproductive structures or seed viability. The relative insensitivity of reproductive allocation to intraspecific competition (high stem density) may be interpreted as a trait linked to unpredictable environments and consistent with long‐lived species. In terms of management, recruitment limitation in E. tricarpa appears not primarily attributable to seed viability, tested seedbed treatments or stem density so further factors, including fire, now require exploration.  相似文献

The effect of three ant species (Lasius flavus, Formica spp., Tetramorium caespitum) on soil seed bank formation was studied in temperate mountain grassland. Seed removal experiments, analysis of soil seed content and seed survival experiments were carried out to evaluate the influence of ground ants on the seed fate. In the seed removal experiment seeds of 16 species, including 5 species with elaiosome-bearing seeds (myrmecochores), were exposed and their removal followed for 39 h. On average, ants removed 63.8% of myrmecochorous seeds and 10.9% of seeds without adaptation to ant dispersal. Analysis of soil seed content revealed that myrmecochores, in spite of expectations that they would accumulate in nests of seed dispersing ants, were most abundant in the soil of control plots. Evidence on seed relocation to the ant nests was obtained from a comparison of mounds of seed dispersing and seed non-dispersing ant species, as more seeds were found in the mounds of Formica spp. and Tetramorium caespitum (seed dispersers) in comparison with the mounds of Lasius favus (non-disperser).The soil seed bank of the compared microhabitats (control plots and mounds of 3 ant species) differed in their species composition, seed abundance and vertical distribution. The most distinct qualitative differences were between seed flora of control plots and mounds of Tetramorium caespitum. Control plots had approximately 30,000 propagules per m2, which was double the number of seeds found in the ant mounds. In control plots, abundance and diversity of seeds steeply declined with depth; this trend was not observed in the mounds probably due to bioturbation. In the seed survival experiment, more seeds (2 out of 3 species) survived in control plots, which may also contribute to the higher seed abundance in this microhabitat. This study showed that seed relocation by ants does not contribute significantly to seed bank build-up at this study site. Ants may, however, increase the regeneration success of myrmecochores, mainly by dispersal for distance and placement in a larger spectrum of microsites, in contrast to species not adapted for myrmecochory.  相似文献

Recolonization of wind-dispersed tree species in degraded areas may decline with distance from remnant forest fragments because seed rain frequently decreases with distance from the seed source. However, regeneration of these species may be even more limited to sites close to the seed source if dispersal distance is negatively affected by seed mass, and germination probability is positively affected by seed mass. We evaluated these hypotheses in a Mediterranean-type ecosystem of central Chile, using the wind-dispersed tree species Quillaja saponaria. We assessed the seed rain curve in a degraded open area adjacent to a remnant forest fragment of this species, and related seed mass with dispersal distance from the seed source. Then, we evaluated the relationship between seed mass, germination, and seedling growth, and if seeds that fall nearer the seed source have greater germination probability. We found a decreasing seed rain with the distance from the seed source. Seed mass was not related to dispersal distance, although seeds with higher wing area dispersed further. Germination probability was significantly and positively related to the seed mass. We observed no significant relationship between distance and germination probability. We conclude that germination probability of this species does not vary along the seed rain curve, and that the recruitment density would be greater near the seed source only due to decreasing seed rain with distance. Our results suggest that this species has the potential to be passively restored in degraded areas, especially within the first 70 m from the remnant forest fragments.
