Contractions evoked by acetylcholine or by tetanic stimulation differed from caffeine contractures, in muscle strips isolated from the longitudinal muscle bands of the body wall of Isostichopus badionotus (Selenka), an aspidochirote holothurian. Tetanic contractions and responses to acetylcholine remained reproducible for hours in sea water or artificial sea water. Caffeine contractures declined rapidly during a series of repetitions, carried out in a bath medium which had a calcium content equivalent to that of sea water. Manganese, lathanum, and dantrolene have been used as calcium antagonists, with the objective of differentiating the calcium stores used in reproducible contractions from the calcium stores used in rapidly extinguishing contractures. Muscle strips were pretreated with an ionophore (X-537A) to confer reproducibility in a series of caffeine contractures, before use of calcium antagonists. For reproducible caffeine contractures, the order of effectiveness of calcium antagonists was lanthanum greater than manganese greater than dantrolene. The order of reversibility was manganese greater than dantrolene greater than lanthanum. For acetylcholine contractions, or tetanic contractions, the order of effectiveness of calcium antagonists was lanthanum greater than manganese and the order of reversibility was manganese greater than lanthanum. This work examines the use of Hybrid Intelligent Systems in the pattern recognition system of an artificial nose. The connectionist approaches Multi-Layer Perceptron and Time Delay Neural Networks, and the hybrid approaches Feature-Weighted Detector and Evolving Neural Fuzzy Networks were investigated. A Wavelet Filter is evaluated as a preprocessing method for odor signals. The signals generated by an artificial nose were composed by an array of conducting polymer sensors and exposed to two different odor databases.  相似文献

Motivated by biochemical processes during muscular contraction, a model is constructed that predicts isometric force from surface electromyographic signals (sEMG). The model is experimentally validated and then it is used to predict contractions from sEMG data. Caffeine has known ergogenic effects, some of which have been observed during submaximal isometric contractions. We used 15 subjects in a randomized, double-blind, repeated-measures experiment to determine caffeine's ergogenic effects on neuromuscular variables that would contribute to increased endurance capacity. Subjects performed repeated submaximal (50% maximal voluntary contraction) isometric contractions of the right quadriceps to the limit of endurance (T(lim)) 1 h after oral caffeine administration (6 mg/kg). Time to reach T(lim) increased by 17 +/- 5.25% (P < 0.02) after caffeine administration compared with the placebo trial. The changes in contractile properties, motor unit activation, and M-wave amplitude that occurred as the quadriceps reached T(lim) could not account for the prolonged performance after caffeine ingestion. In a separate experiment with the same subjects, we used a constant-sensation technique to determine whether caffeine influenced force sensation during 100 s of an isometric contraction of the quadriceps. The results of this experiment showed that caffeine reduced force sensation during the first 10-20 s of the contraction. The rapidity of this effect suggests that caffeine exerts its effects neurally. Based on these data, the caffeine-induced increase in T(lim) may have been caused by a willingness to maintain near-maximal activation longer because of alterations in muscle sensory processes.  相似文献

Frequency analysis of myoelectric (ME) signals, using the mean power spectral frequency (MNF), has been widely used to characterize peripheral muscle fatigue during isometric contractions assuming constant force. However, during repetitive isokinetic contractions performed with maximum effort, output (force or torque) will decrease markedly during the initial 40-60 contractions, followed by a phase with little or no change. MNF shows a similar pattern. In situations where there exist a significant relationship between MNF and output, part of the decrease in MNF may per se be related to the decrease in force during dynamic contractions. This study estimated force effects on the MNF shifts during repetitive dynamic knee extensions. Twenty healthy volunteers participated in the study and both surface ME signals (from the right vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and rectus femoris muscles) and the biomechanical signals (force, position, and velocity) of an isokinetic dynamometer were measured. Two tests were performed: (i) 100 repetitive maximum isokinetic contractions of the right knee extensors, and (ii) five gradually increasing static knee extensions before and after (i). The corresponding ME signal time-frequency representations were calculated using the continuous wavelet transform. Compensation of the MNF variables of the repetitive contractions was performed with respect to the individual MNF-force relation based on an average of five gradually increasing contractions. Whether or not compensation was necessary was based on the shape of the MNF-force relationship. A significant compensation of the MNF was found for the repetitive isokinetic contractions. In conclusion, when investigating maximum dynamic contractions, decreases in MNF can be due to mechanisms similar to those found during sustained static contractions (force-independent component of fatigue) and in some subjects due to a direct effect of the change in force (force-dependent component of fatigue). In order to compare MNF shifts during sustained static and repetitive dynamic contractions it is necessary to estimate the force-dependent component of fatigue of dynamic contractions. Our results are preliminary and have to be confirmed in larger experiments using single dynamic contractions when determining the MNF-force relationship of the unfatigued situation.  相似文献

目的:观察非疲劳状态下肱二头肌在静态连续递增负荷下sEMG信号的线性和非线性指标变化规律,探讨非疲劳状态下肌肉活动的力-电关系。方法:记录11名男性受试者肱二头肌在完成为时5s连续递增负荷等长收缩过程中的sEMG信号,观察线性分析指标AEMG、MPF、MF与非线性分析指标C(N)和DET%的变化规律。结果:AEMG由第1s的112.14μV逐渐上升到第5s的1277.18μV,与负荷水平呈明显线性相关;DET%从第1s的74.95下降到第5s的46.78,呈单调递减变化;MPF、MF和C(N)在本试验条件下未发生明显改变。结论:在连续递增收缩过程中,线性分析指标AEMG呈线性递增性变化,而MPF和MF无显著改变;非线性分析指标DET%随用力程度的连续递增而递减,而C(N)则保持相对稳定。  相似文献

This paper discusses the need to account for the sampling scheme in an analysis of epidemiological population data which were collected by a two-stage cluster sample. An example is presented where for validity reasons one should generally account for the sampling scheme, though a rule-of-thumb is given to estimate the effect of not doing so. The example concerns one of the centers (Augsburg, F. R. G.) participating in the WHO MONICA Project, which was designed to study the relationship between changes in risk factor levels, as measured by several surveys in each center, and changes in cardiovascular incidence rates, as measured by a registry system for each center. Variance estimation methods which either account for or ignore the sampling scheme are compared for a particular sampling scheme. Easily computable upper bounds on the effect on variances of ignoring the sampling scheme are presented, both over all possible variables, and for a particular variable.  相似文献

It has been demonstrated that mosquito larvae crude extract has an inhibiting effect on the mitotic rate of several mouse cell populations. The sampling period was 16–24h after treatment, when mitotic peak normally occurs. The present paper reports the effect of mosquito larvae crude extract on the proliferation of hepatocytes, renocytes, Lieberkhün crypt enterocytes, and sialocytes. In this case, the sampling period covered the dark phase of the day, during the first 12h after treatment. Colchicine-arrested metaphases were controlled at 20/04, 00/08 and 04/12 (Time of Day/Time Post Injection). The mitotic rate was significantly increased in hepatocytes and renocytes and inhibited in duodenum enterocytes. In view of the time chosen to administer the treatments and the time elapsed until sampling, we conclude a probable effect of the extract at the G2-M point of the cell cycle.  相似文献

Sensory signals of contact and engagement with the substrate are important in the control and adaptation of posture and locomotion. We characterized responses of campaniform sensilla, receptors that encode forces as cuticular strains, in the tarsi (feet) of cockroaches using neurophysiological techniques and digital imaging. A campaniform sensillum on the fourth tarsal segment was readily identified by its large action potential in nerve recordings. The receptor discharged to contractions of the retractor unguis muscle, which engages the pretarsus (claws and arolium) with the substrate. We mimicked the effects of muscle contractions by applying displacements to the retractor apodeme (tendon). Sensillum firing did not occur to unopposed movements, but followed engagement of the claws with an object. Vector analysis of forces suggested that resisted muscle contractions produce counterforces that axially compress the tarsal segments. Close joint packing of tarsal segments was clearly observed following claw engagement. Physiological experiments showed that the sensillum responded vigorously to axial forces applied directly to the distal tarsus. Discharges of tarsal campaniform sensilla could effectively signal active substrate engagement when the pretarsal claws and arolium are used to grip the substrate in climbing, traversing irregular terrains or walking on inverted surfaces.  相似文献

运用线性和非线性分析方法分析不同强度等长收缩诱发局部肌肉疲劳及恢复过程中表面肌电信号(surface electromyogram,sEMG)特征的变化规律,探讨影响sEMG信号变化的可能原因和机制.结果显示,在肱二头肌疲劳收缩过程中,sEMG的特征指标平均肌电值(average EMG,AEMG)、平均功率频率(mean power frequency,MPF)、Lempel-Ziv复杂度(Lempel-Ziv complexity,C(n))和确定性线段百分数(Determinism%,% DET)的变化具有良好的规律性.恢复期AEMG没有表现出规律性的变化,MPF、C(n)和?T在恢复期2秒即开始显著恢复,在前10秒恢复很快,随后恢复速度变慢.恢复初期sEMG信号特征的快速变化提示中枢控制因素可能发挥更大作用.  相似文献

Recently, the research efforts in the context of electrocardiographical recording during atrial fibrillation (AF) has been directed to broaden the understandings on the electrophysiological and structural remodelling occurring during the arrhythmia and on characterizing the different types of AF. Following this line, both surface ECG and endocardial electrograms have been thoroughly studied and a series of linear and non-linear parameters were computed either directly on the electrograms or on the derived activation series.

In this paper, we reviewed some signal processing methods used to characterize surface ECG and endocardial electrograms during AF, focusing on spectral and non-linear analysis. In particular, parametric and non-parametric methods for spectral analysis of the residual ECG, i.e. atrial waves obtained from surface ECG after removing ventricular activity, and endocardial recordings are described. The different purposes of spectral analysis (exploring autonomic functions, analysis of spontaneous AF behaviour and predicting therapeutic effects) are illustrated with some examples. In addition, we described some more recent non-linear methods applied to AF, assessing the organization of atrial signals as well as ventricular response in AF. In particular, methods derived from embedding time series and based on entropy computation are illustrated and exemplified.  相似文献

Time course experiments with microarrays have begun to provide a glimpse into the dynamic behavior of gene expression. In a typical experiment, scientists use microarrays to measure the abundance of mRNA at discrete time points after the onset of a stimulus. Recently, there has been much work on using these data to infer causal regulatory networks that model how genes influence each other. However, microarray studies typically have slow sampling rates that can lead to temporal aggregation of the signal. That is, each successive sampling point represents the sum of all signal changes since the previous sample. In this paper, we show that temporal aggregation can bias algorithms for causal inference and lead them to discover spurious relations that would not be found if the signal were sampled at a much faster rate. We discuss the implications of temporal aggregation on inference, the problems it creates, and potential directions for solutions.  相似文献

Two methods for the determination of ovulation were compared to one ultrasonography performed 5 times a day. Time of ovulation by echography was 40 +/- 5.8 h (mean +/- SD) after the onset of oestrus. Preovulatory LH rise (two blood samples per day) began near the onset of oestrus but, in our conditions, this parameter could not be used to predict ovulation. The basal level of progesterone (two blood samples per day) was determined with a non-linear model, the timing when progesterone rose more than one SD (0.3 ng x mL(-1)) coincided with the timing of ovulation determined by echography (R2 = 0.98). This method was efficient and was used in a field trial to measure the consequences of the variability of the interval between Al and ovulation on litter size. The interval between Al and ovulation had an effect on litter size; litter size decreased by one piglet when this interval increased by 10h.  相似文献

Innovative applications of non-linear time series analysis have recently been used to investigate physiological phenomena. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using the correlation integral to monitor the localized muscle fatigue process in the biceps brachii during sustained maximal efforts. The subjects performed isometric maximum contractions until failure in elbow flexion (90 degrees from neutral). The median and the 70th percentile frequency of the Surface electromyography (SEMG) power spectrum, the integrated SEMG, and the Correlation Integral (CI) were evaluated during the trials. The linear correlation between these variables and the elbow torque production was used to quantify the ability of a parameter to follow the fatiguing process. The CI had the highest linear correlation with torque (0.77 (0.12SD)), while the spectral indices correlations with torque were much lower. The decreasing trend of the torque production was followed by the spectral indices for only the beginning part of the contraction, while the CI increased sharply after the torque production fell to about 0.60 of the MVC. This suggests that the CI is sensitive to different changes of the SEMG signal during fatigue than the spectral variables.  相似文献

Spatial interpolation methods have been applied to many disciplines. Many factors affect the performance of the methods, but there are no consistent findings about their effects. In this study, we use comparative studies in environmental sciences to assess the performance and to quantify the impacts of data properties on the performance. Two new measures are proposed to compare the performance of the methods applied to variables with different units/scales. A total of 53 comparative studies were assessed and the performance of 72 methods/sub-methods compared is analysed. The impacts of sample density, data variation and sampling design on the estimations of 32 methods are quantified using data derived from their application to 80 variables. Inverse distance weighting (IDW), ordinary kriging (OK), and ordinary co-kriging (OCK) are the most frequently used methods. Data variation is a dominant impact factor and has significant effects on the performance of the methods. As the variation increases, the accuracy of all methods decreases and the magnitude of decrease is method dependent. Irregular-spaced sampling design might improve the accuracy of estimation. The effect of sampling density on the performance of the methods is found not to be significant. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The execution of unilateral hand contractions before performance has been reported to produce behavioral aftereffects in various tasks. These effects have been regularly attributed to an induced shift in activation asymmetry to the contralateral hemisphere produced by the contractions. An alternative explanation proposes a generalized state of reduced bilateral cortical activity following unilateral hand contractions. The current experiment contrasted the above explanation models and tested the state of cortical activity after the termination of unilateral hand contractions. Twenty right-handed participants performed hand contractions in two blocks, one for each hand. Using electroencephalogram (EEG), the broad alpha band and its asymmetry between hemispheres before, during, and after hand contractions were analyzed. During contractions, significant bilateral decrease in alpha amplitudes (indicating cortical activation) emerged for both hands around sensory-motor regions. After contractions, alpha amplitudes increased significantly over the whole scalp when compared to baseline, but only for the left hand. No modulation of hemispheric asymmetry was observed at any phase. The results suggest that unilateral hand contractions produce a state of reduced cortical activity after their termination, which is more pronounced if the left hand was used. Consequently, we propose that the reduced cortical activity (and not the persistent activation asymmetry) may facilitate engagement in subsequent behavior, probably due to preventing interference from other, nonessential cortical regions.  相似文献

Ability to estimate motor unit propagation velocity correctly using different two-channel methods for delay estimation and different non-invasive spatial filters was analysed by simulation. It was established that longitudinal double difference electrodes could be not a better choice than simple bipolar parallel electrodes. Spatial filtration with a new multi-electrode (performing difference between signals detected by two transversal double difference electrodes positioned along the muscle fibres) promises to give the best estimate. Delay estimation between reference points is more preferable than that based on the cross-correlation technique, which is considerably sensitive to the fundamental properties of the muscle fibre extracellular fields. Preliminary averaging and approximation of the appropriate parts of the signals around chosen reference points could reduce the larger noise sensitivity and the effects of local tissue inhomogeneities as well as eliminate the sampling problem. A correct estimate of the propagation velocity could be impossible, even in the case of not very deep motor units (15 or 10 mm, depending on the spatial filter used) with relatively long (about 120 mm) muscle fibres. In the case of fibres with asymmetrical location of the end-plates in respect to the fibre ends, the propagation velocity estimates could be additionally biased above the longer semilength of the motor unit fibres.  相似文献

Muscle architecture is an important parameter affecting the muscle function. Most of the previous studies on in-vivo muscle architecture have used in 2D ultrasound. The importance of the third dimension has not been much explored due to lack of appropriate methods. DT-MRI has been used to study muscle architecture in 3D, however, due to long scan times of about 15 min DT-MRI has not been suitable to study active muscle contractions. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate methods to determine in-vivo muscle fascicle orientations in 3D using ultrasound. We have used 2D ultrasound and a 3D position tracker system to find the 3D fascicle orientation in 3D space. 2D orientations were obtained by using automated methods developed in our previous studies and we have extended these in the current study to obtain the 3D muscle fascicle orientation in 3D space. The methods were validated using the physical phantom and we found that the mean error in the measurement was less than 0.5° in each of the three co-ordinate planes. These methods can be achieved with short scan times (less than 2 min for the gastrocnemii) and will thus enable future studies to quantify 3D muscle architecture during sub-maximal voluntary contractions.  相似文献
