Soil ingestion estimates may play a prominent role in exposure estimation for risk assessments involving tightly bound soil contaminants such as dioxin, PCBs, and lead in soil. Since contamination is often localized to specific areas, the relative contribution of ingested soil due to outdoor soil and indoor dust may have a large impact on the risk assessment. This article examines data on 64 preschool children over 2 weeks to estimate the relative contribution of ingested soil from outdoor soil and indoor dust. Four principal methodological approaches are developed and presented to form the estimates, and their relative strengths and weaknesses are discussed.

The four approaches differ in their assumptions and their ability to detail differences in ingestion source. Two approaches (i.e., duration correlation method — approach 1 and group tracer ratio method — approach 2) were used that can only estimate the average ingestion source, where averages are calculated over subjects and weeks. Both of these approaches have sufficient limitations to preclude confidence in the resulting estimates.

The final two approaches (approach 3 — individual tracer ratio method and approach 4 — multiple statistical model method) were able to characterize ingestion source for individual subject‐weeks and offered more plausible estimates of soil ingestion. Greater emphasis is placed on approach 3 since it was biologically plausible and conceptually straightforward. Approach 3 indicated that 49.2% ± 29.2% of the residual fecal tracers were estimated to be of soil origin. These findings, which represent the first quantitative differentiation of soil vs. dust ingestion, have considerable application for a variety of environmental settings requiring exposure assessment.  相似文献

In order to provide dust ingestion rates that can aid the interpretation of indoor dust measurements as surface loadings (i.e., units of µg/m2), dust ingestion rates have been developed for various age groups on a surface area basis. The approach incorporates a hand-to-mouth mechanistic model that was previously developed to estimate dust ingestion rates in units of mg/day. The analysis resulted in estimated mean dust intakes that range from 0.0032 m2/d (for teenagers) to 0.061 m2/d (for toddlers) at residential settings assumed to be comprised of 50% hard surfaces and 50% soft surfaces. Intake rates assuming 100% hard surfaces and 100% soft surfaces are also presented. The values provided are intended to assist the interpretation of indoor dust investigations where substance content in dust is presented as surface loadings rather than bulk dust concentrations.  相似文献

This report estimated the amount of outdoor soil in indoor dust in the Calabrese et al. (1989) children soil ingestion study via the use of statistical modelling. The estimate used data on outdoor soil and indoor dust in the homes of 60 children with eight tracer elements (Al, Ba, Mn, Si, Ti, V, Y, and Zr). The model estimated that 31.3% of indoor dust had an origin of outdoor soil. Based on a previous report (Stanek and Calabrese, 1992) on differential soil from dust ingestion in the Calabrese et al. (1989) study and the data of the present analysis, the median outdoor soil ingestion of the Calabrese et al. (1989) study should be revised downward by 35%. For the three most reliable tracers, the median soil ingestion estimates would be reduced from 29 to 19 mg/d for Al, 55 to 36 mg/d for Ti, and 16 to 10 mg/d for, Zr.  相似文献

A method for deriving Site-Specific Assessment Criteria (SSAC) for use when considering risk to human health from chronic exposure to heavy metals (except lead), metalloids, and organic substances in soil, with application to the United Kingdom (UK), is described. The SSAC represents the soil concentration above which an unacceptable risk to human health may be indicated.

The method considers the UK standard land uses (residential with and without plant uptake, allotment gardens, and commercial/industrial) by applying the default exposure factors and algorithms provided. Non-standard land uses can be also considered. Site-specific determinations of contaminant bioaccessibility or of plant-to-soil concentration factors may be used if available.

The method adopts the risk-based source-pathway-receptor pollutant linkage framework and a deterministic methodology. Exposure pathways considered are direct ingestion of soil and dust, consumption of home grown or allotment vegetables, ingestion of soil attached to such vegetables, inhalation of soil vapors outdoors and inhalation of soil vapors indoors. A test for the significance of the dermal pathway is also included.

It is not intended that the method be used to generate or replace UK Soil Guideline Values, because this can only be done by the appropriate authoritative bodies within the UK (Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Environment Agency).  相似文献

There is a lack of scientifically justified approaches for assessing sediment ingestion rates of people exposed to contaminated sediments. Consequently, a method was developed to estimate sediment ingestion rates from: (1) hand-to-mouth contact with sediments and (2) incidental ingestion of surface water containing suspended sediments. In the case of hand-to-mouth contact, a mechanistic approach was used based on established principles and assumptions previously used for estimation of soil and dust ingestion rates. A key modification of the approach was to account for greater adherence of sediments to hands as compared to soil and dusts. For estimation of sediment ingestion from surface water contact, a method was developed that considered the unique aspects of suspended sediments. The analysis indicated that hand-to-mouth contact is the dominant pathway for ingestion of sediment. When people use aquatic areas for recreational purposes, the analysis has indicated that mean sediment ingestion rates may range from 18 to 72 mg/h for various receptor age groups. For sites where people spend more than 1 h per day on a consistent basis in direct contact with sediments, the results indicate that sediment ingestion rates may be greater than those typically assumed in Canadian human health risk assessment guidance for soils.  相似文献

In Chile, there are several agricultural areas with soils containing high levels of copper of both anthropic and geochemical origin. The diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) technique is a promising tool for the evaluation of the bioavailability of metals in situ in different environmental systems. The objective of this study was the preparation, validation, and application of DGT to soil solutions and soil containing copper over 1000 mg kg?1.

The results show that a resin gel thickness of 0.3 mm gives the best reproducibility and response in the absorption of copper by DGT. The amount of copper extracted in a period of 4 h by the devices from the soil solution corresponds to 13% of the total metal present in the solution.

The DGT allowed a more representative estimation of the amount of Cu available in the soil, more in agreement with the absence of symptoms of phytotoxicity in cultivated species. This shows that the determination of available Cu by DTPA must be handled cautiously because in soils with high Cu content the amount of metal that can have direct influence on absorption by the plant is overestimated.  相似文献

This paper develops a novel methodology, the Best Tracer method (BTM), that substantially overcomes the principal limitations (intertracer inconsistencies, and poor precision of recovery) of estimating soil ingestion by specific soil‐based tracers in massbalance studies. The BTM incorporates a biological and statistical framework that improves precision of recovery of tracer estimates, markedly reducing input‐output misalignment error resulting from a lack of correspondence between food tracer input and fecal tracer output.

This method is then used to re‐estimate the soil ingestion distribution of previously published soil ingestion estimates from two children studies (Calabrese et al. 1989; Davis et al., 1990) and one adult study (Calabrese et al., 1990). Revised estimates of soil ingestion are provided for each study. In addition, the results from the two children's studies are combined to form a single estimate of the soil ingestion distribution. These collective findings result in more reliable quantitative estimates of soil ingestion than trace element specific estimates, as well as providing improved understanding of current published soil ingestion studies, and improved methods that will enhance the design and interpretation of future soil ingestion studies.

With respect to children, the data indicate that the Calabrese et al. (1989) study provides the most reliable estimates of soil ingestion based on the estimated precision of recovery. However, estimates for the combined data of the Calabrese et al. (1989) and Davis et al. (1990) studies include all available children's data from mass balance studies, and thus provide more robust estimates. The collective data suggest that the median child in these studies ingested 30–40 mg/day of soil, while the upper 95% estimate is approximately 200 mg/day. Current data are insufficient to distinguish the children's soil ingestion distribution from that of adults. The revised and improved estimates of soil ingestion for children and adults have important implications for contaminant exposure estimates used in site evaluation risk assessment procedures.  相似文献

Background: Knowledge about vegetation and soil seed bank composition and the processes that contribute to vegetation recovery after the removal of heavy grazing is lacking in sub-alpine ecosystems.

Aims: In order to assess the effects of large herbivores on above-ground vegetation (AGV) and soil seed bank (SSB) characteristics, intensively sheep-grazed areas were compared to adjacent areas where grazing had been removed 10 years previously in a sub-alpine grassland of northern Iran.

Methods: A total of 40 4-m2 (2 m × 2 m) plots were established in each treatment, and soil samples were collected from each plot within a depth of 10 cm. Plant species composition was determined for each plot during the flowering stage of herbaceous species in June 2011. The seedling emergence method was used to estimate SSB composition.

Results: A total of 45 species (23 annuals and 22 perennials) emerged from the soil samples of the grazed area, while the number of species emerged from the soil samples of the previously grazing area was 76 (37 annuals and 39 perennials). The removal of grazing led to a significant increase in species richness and seed density in the SSB. Species turnover of AGV was higher, and that of the SSB was similar for grazed areas compared with areas that were formerly grazed. Detrended correspondence analysis ordination of AGV composition showed a clearly separate structure between grazed plots and plots where grazing has been removed, while the segregation was less clear for SSB composition.

Conclusions: We concluded that restoration of locally degraded sites cannot rely on the SSB when grazing is stopped simultaneously and unvegetated gaps are colonised by vegetative growth rather than by seed.  相似文献

This work was aimed at evaluating the feasibility of a remediation treatment performed by means of a supercritical carbon dioxide extraction on a sandy soil recently contaminated by light polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

The soil utilized in this study was artificially contaminated by naphthalene and anthracene. The artificial contamination process was intended to simulate a recent accidental spillage of hydrocarbon fuels.

Several extractions, aimed at singling out the operating parameters (pressure, temperature, supercritical fluid mass flow rate) that are able to obtain the residual required concentration (50 mg/kg dry soil) in the shortest time, were carried out on a on-purpose made system.

The best extraction conditions were 120 bar and 40°C for a naphthalene contaminated soil and 200 bar and 80–100°C for an anthracene contaminated soil.

The results obtained in the experimental tests made it possible to build an analytical model able to correlate, for the given soil, the extraction length to the operating parameters such as supercritical fluid density, temperature and mass flow rate.

In order to evaluate the economic feasibility of the process, a unit treatment cost was evaluated for the case of an extraction carried out in a 10 m3 reactor in the presence of the best extraction conditions that were previously determined. The extraction unit cost was therefore equal to 35 000–65 000 €/t for a soil with a starting contaminant concentration equal to 1000 mg/kg of dry soil.  相似文献

Past applications of biosolids to soils at some locations added higher Cd levels than presently permitted. Cadmium phytoextraction would alleviate current land use constraints. Unamended farm soil, and biosolids amended farm and mine soils were obtained from a Fulton Co., IL biosolids management facility. Soils contained 0.16, 22.8, 45.3 mg Cd kg–1 and 43.1, 482, 812 mg Zn kg–1 respectively with initial pH 6.0, 6.1, 6.4. In greenhouse studies, Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris var. cicla), a Cd-accumulator maize (inbred B37 Zea mays) and a southern France Cd-hyperaccumulator genotype of Noccaea caerulescens were tested for Cd accumulation and phytoextraction. Soil pH was adjusted from ~5.5–7.0. Additionally 100 rice (Oryza sativa) genotypes and the Ni-hyperaccumulator Alyssum murale were screened for potential phytoextraction use.

Chard suffered phytotoxicity at low pH and accumulated up to 90 mg Cd kg–1 on the biosolids amended mine soil. The maize inbred accumulated up to 45 mg Cd kg–1 with only mild phytotoxicity symptoms during early growth at pH > 6.0. N. caerulescens did not exhibit phytotoxicity symptoms at any pH, and accumulated up to 235 mg Cd kg–1 in 3 months. Reharvested N. caerulescens accumulated up to 900 mg Cd kg–1 after 10 months. Neither Alyssum nor 90% of rice genotypes survived acceptably.

Both N. caerulescens and B37 maize show promise for Cd phytoextraction in IL and require field evaluation; both plants could be utilized for nearly continuous Cd removal. Other maize inbreds may offer higher Cd phytoextraction at lower pH, and mono-cross hybrids higher shoot biomass yields. Further, maize grown only for biomass Cd maximum removal could be double-cropped.  相似文献

In growth chamber experiments we studied the potential use of elemental sulfur (S8) as an acidifying agent to enhance the uptake of Cd and Zn from three different polluted soils by candidate phytoremediation plants (Brassica juncea, Helianthus annuus, Salix viminalis). Two of the three soils were calcareous, the other slightly acidic. One of the calcareous soils had been contaminated by dust emissions from a nearby brass smelter. The pollution of the other two soils had resulted from sewage sludge applications.

Sulfur was added to soils in quantities of 20 to 400 mmol sulfur kg-1 soil. Plants were grown under fluorescent light in 1.5 l ($OS 13 cm) pots for 28 d.

Within 700 h soil pH decreased significantly in all soils, depending on S8 dosage. In the acid soil, pH decreased from pH 6.5 to about 4 at the highest treatment level, while pH in one of the calcareous soils dropped even below pH 4. The effect was smaller in the second calcareous soil.

NaNO3-extractable Cd and Zn increased up to 26-and 13-fold, respectively, in the acid soil, while in the calcareous soils, maximum increases were 9-and 11-fold, respectively.

Increased NaNO3-extractable concentrations translated well into shoot concentrations (dry matter) in plants. Shoot Zn concentrations in H. annuus, for example, increased from 930 in the controls to 4300 mg kg-1 in the highest S8 treatment. However, effects observed in the plants were generally smaller than in the soils. In addition, in some variants growth was negatively affected, resulting in reduced metal removal from the soils.  相似文献

Context: Organophosphorus insecticides (OPs) have been used to control agricultural pests found in Washington state. Farmworkers (FW) have higher exposure to OP pesticides than non-farmworkers (NFW), and FW children may in turn have higher exposure than NFW children.

Objective: To examine the association between the concentration in house dust of five OPs used commonly in pome fruit orchards and the concentration in urine of dialkylphosphate metabolites (DAP), in a cohort of Hispanic FW and NFW and their children.

Methods: Parents and children participated in three data collection periods over the course of one year. Urine samples were evaluated for the DAPs characteristic of OP exposure, and dust from homes and vehicles was evaluated for intact OP residues.

Results: Geometric mean (GM) concentrations of OPs in house and vehicle dust were higher in FW households than NFW households in all agricultural seasons. GM concentration of urinary DAPs was higher for children in FW households than NFW households.

Discussion: Regression analysis found a positive association between OP residues in house dust and the children’s urinary DAPs.

Conclusions: To our knowledge, this study is the first to report an association between pesticides in house dust and their biological metabolites in urine.  相似文献

Introduction: Bright light exposure in the late evening can affect cognitive function the following morning either by changing the biological clock and/or disturbing sleep, but the evidence for this effect is scarce, and the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we first aimed to evaluate the effect of bright light exposure before bedtime on frontal lobe activity the following morning using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during a Go/NoGo task. Second, we aimed to evaluate the effects of bright light exposure before bedtime on polysomnographic measures and on a frontal lobe function test the following morning.

Methods: Twenty healthy, young males (mean age, 25.5 years) were recruited between September 2013 and August 2014. They were first exposed to control light (150 lux) before bedtime (from 20:00 h to 24:00 h) for 2 days and then to bright light (1,000 lux) before bedtime for an additional 5 days. We performed polysomnography (PSG) on the final night of each light exposure period (on nights 2 and night 7) and performed NIRS, which measures the concentrations of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (OxyHb and DeoxyHb, respectively), coupled with a Go/NoGo task the following morning (between 09:30 h and 11:30 h). The participants also completed frontal lobe function tests the following morning.

Results: NIRS showed decreased hemodynamic activity (lower OxyHb and a tendency toward higher DeoxyHb concentration) in the right frontal lobe during the NoGo block after 1000-lux light exposure compared with that during the NoGo block after 150-lux light exposure. The commission error rate (ER) during the Go/NoGo task was higher after 1000-lux light exposure than that during the Go/NoGo task after 150-lux light exposure (1.24 ± 1.09 vs. 0.6 ± 0.69, = 0.002), suggesting a reduced inhibitory response.

Conclusion: This study shows that exposure to bright light before bedtime for 5 days impairs right frontal lobe activation and response inhibition the following morning.  相似文献

Mental and physical stress is common in physicians during night shifts. Neurocognitive effects of sleep deprivation as well as alterations in hormonal and metabolic parameters have previously been described. The aim of this crossover study was to evaluate the effects of night-shift work with partial sleep deprivation on steroid hormone excretion and possible associations with mood, sleep characteristics and cognitive functions in physicians.

In total, 34 physicians (mean age 42 ± 8.5 years, 76.5% male) from different departments of the General Hospital of Vienna, Austria, were randomly assigned to two conditions: a regular day shift (8 h on duty, condition 1) and a continuous day-night shift (24 h on duty, condition 2). In both conditions, physicians collected a 24 h urine sample for steroid hormone concentration analysis and further completed psychological tests, including the sleep questionnaire (SF-A), the questionnaire for mental state (MDBF) and the computer-assisted visual memory test (FVW) before and at the end of their shifts, respectively.

Although mean sleep deprivation during night shift was relatively small (~1.5 h) the impairment in participants’ mental state was high in all three dimensions (mood, vigilance and agitation, p ≤ 0.001). Sleep quality (SQ), feeling of being recovered after sleep and mental balance decreased (≤ 0.001), whereas mental exhaustion increased (p < 0.05). Moreover, we could show a nearly linear relationship between most of these self-rating items. Testing visual memory participants made significantly more mistakes after night shift (p = 0.011), however, mostly in incorrectly identified items and not in correctly identified ones (FVW). SQ and false identified items were negatively correlated, whereas SQ and time of reaction were positively associated. It is assumed that after night shift, a tendency exists to make faster wrong decisions. SQ did not influence correctly identified items in FVW. In contrast to previous investigations, we found that only excretion rates for pregnanetriol and androsterone/etiocholanolone ratios (p < 0.05, respectively) were slightly reduced in 24-h urine samples after night shift. A considerable stimulation of the adrenocortical axis could not be affirmed. In general, dehydroepiandrosteron (DHEA) was negatively associated with the sense of recreation after sleep and with the time of reaction and positively correlated with correctly identified items in the FVW test.

These results, on the one hand, are in line with previous findings indicating that stress and sleep deprivation suppress gonadal steroids, but, on the other hand, do not imply significant adrenocortical-axis stimulation (e.g. an increase of cortisol) during the day-night shift.  相似文献

Objective: Evaluate the use of different cardiac troponin (cTn) immunoassays and the prognostic value of increased cTn values in patients diagnosed with acute heart failure (AHF) in the emergency department (ED).

Method: The epidemiology acute heart failure emergency-TROPonin in acute heart failure2 (EAHFE-TROPICA2) is a retrospective study including patients with AHF admitted in 34 Spanish EDs with cTn values determined in the ED. We studied the prevalence of elevated troponin (value above the established reference limit) for the different types of troponin. We also assessed crude and adjusted primary (1-year all-cause death) and secondary (30 d ED revisit due to AHF) outcomes for every type of cTn and different magnitudes of troponin elevation.

Results: We analysed 4705 episodes of AHF. Troponin was elevated in 48.4% of the cases (25.3% in cTnI, 37.9% in cTnT and 82.2% in hs-cTnT). Mortality at one year was higher in patients with elevated troponin (adjusted HR 1.61; CI 95% 1.38–1.88) regardless of the type of cTn determined. Elevated troponin was not related to ED revisit within 30 d after discharge (1.01; 0.87–1.19).

Conclusions: The use of conventional troponin in the ED is useful to predict one-year mortality in patients with AHF. Highly sensitive cTnT (hs-cTnT) elevations less than double the reference value have no impact on patient outcome.  相似文献

Excessive intake of purine-rich foods elevates serum uric acid levels, making it a risk factor for hyperuricemia.

We hypothesized that lactic acid bacteria ingested with food might utilize purines and contribute to their decreased absorption in the intestines, thereby preventing hyperuricemia. We previously reported that Lactobacillus gasseri PA-3 (PA-3) incorporates adenosine/inosine and related purines and that oral ingestion of PA-3 reduced the absorption of these purines in rats. However, it is unclear whether PA-3 also decreases the absorption of other purines, such as guanosine 5′-monophosphate (GMP) and guanosine. This study investigated whether PA-3 incorporates GMP and guanosine and reduces their absorption in rats.

PA-3 incorporated both purines, with 14C-GMP uptake being greater than that of 14C-guanosine. Radioactivity in rat blood was significantly lower 30, 45, and 60 minutes after administration of 14C-GMP plus PA-3 than after administration of 14C-GMP alone and was significantly lower 15 minutes after administration of 14C-guanosine plus PA-3 than after administration of 14C-guanosine alone.

PA-3 incorporates GMP and guanosine in vitro. Oral administration of PA-3 with GMP and guanosine reduces the intestinal absorption of these purines in vivo. These findings, together with those of previous studies, indicate that PA-3 reduces the absorption of major purines contained in foods. PA-3 may also attenuate the excessive absorption of dietary purines in humans, protecting these individuals against hyperuricemia.  相似文献

A series of perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS)-related substances are produced as the alternatives to corresponding perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). However, there is little reliable information about PFBS available for the whole ecotoxicology compartments. At present, its ecotoxicity of perfluorobutane sulfonate potassium (PFBSK) was selected as a typical PFBS chemical to investigate and evaluate its aquatic, terrestrial, microorganism and sediment toxicity according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guideline under the framework of the REACH regulation. Meanwhile, the ecotoxicology hazard and risk for PFBSK and PFOS were compared comprehensively.

PFBSK did not show acute and chronic aquatic, microorganisms and terrestrial animal toxicity, while exhibited some terrestrial plants toxicity. The ecotoxicology of PFBSK decreased sharply except for terrestrial plants compared with PFOS. Especially, for acute and chronic aquatic ecotoxicity, PFBSK is lower than 100 times those of PFOS.

Although the similar terrestrial plants toxicity level was observed for PFBSK and PFOS, the lower risk of PFBSK was deduced for the reason that there was far less chances to be exposed and retained in the soil and sediment for its high water solubility and low adsorption.

In conclusion, PFBSK showed lower ecotoxicity hazard and risk than those of PFOS. PFBSK could be an environmental friendly alternative to PFOS.  相似文献

Investigating the methylation status of the circadian genes may contribute to a better understanding of the shift work-related circadian disruption in individuals exposed to artificial light at night. In the present study, we determined the methylation status of the circadian genes associated with a shift work pattern among nurses and midwives participating in a cross-sectional study in Lodz, Poland.

Quantitative methylation polymerase chain reaction assays were used to assess promoter CpG methylation in PER1, PER2, PER3, CRY1, CRY2, BMAL1, CLOCK, and NPAS2 in genomic DNA from whole blood of 347 women having a rotating-shift work schedule and 363 women working days only. The percentage of methylated reference (PMR) was assessed using fluorescent probes for PER1, PER2, PER3, CRY1, and NPAS2, and the percentage of gene methylation, as the methylation index (MI), using two sets of primers for BMAL1, CLOCK, and CRY2.

We tested the possible association between current and lifetime rotating night-shift work characteristics and circadian gene methylation by using proportional odds regression model with blood DNA methylation, categorized into tertiles, and adjusted for age, current smoking status, folate intake and blood collection time. The findings indicated that CpG methylation in PER2 promoter was significantly decreased (P < 0.004) among nurses and midwives currently working rotating shifts, as compared with day-working nurses and midwives. The lower percentage of PER2 methylation was associated with a higher monthly frequency of current night duties (2–7 night shifts, and eight or more night shifts per month) (P = 0.012) and was associated at borderline significance (P = 0.092) with the lifetime duration of shift work (>10 ≤ 20 years and >20 ≤ 43 years of rotating-shift work) among nurses and midwives (N = 710). Moreover, women with a longer lifetime duration of shift work presented a lower status of PER1 methylation (P = 0.040) than did the women with up to 10 years of rotating-shift work. Long lifetime duration of shift work (> 10 years) among current rotating night-shift workers (N = 347) was associated with BMAL1 hypomethylation (P = 0.013).

Among eight of the investigated circadian genes, only PER1, PER2, and BMAL1 showed differential methylation attributable to the rotating-shift work of nurses and midwives. The findings on blood-based DNA methylation in the circadian genes may provide a better insight into the mechanistic principles underlying the possible health effects of night-shift work but these should be verified in further studies recruiting larger populations of shift workers.  相似文献

Background: Newly protected, tropical forests recovering from logging and clearance are increasingly important targets for conservation. Recovery is typically evaluated or monitored by using a few easily identified species groups, but this may not be sufficient as unmonitored groups of equivalent ecological importance are unlikely to respond in a similar manner due to physiological or dispersal differences.

Aims: We compared four groups of plants: large trees, shrubs and saplings, herbs and ferns in a forest recovering from disturbance. We quantified the relative importance of disturbance history and local environmental conditions in determining species richness and community composition of these groups and assessed whether the groups could act as surrogate indicators for one another.

Methods: Vegetation was surveyed on a gradient of disturbance intensity and recovery time (20–60 years) in Mabira Forest, Uganda. We looked for correlations between species groups in richness or composition across sites and used constrained ordinations to identify important environmental variables.

Results: Neither species richness nor composition patterns were correlated between groups. All groups were weakly related to disturbance history; trees and shrubs were related to soil, herbs to microhabitat and ferns to microclimate.

Conclusions: No group acted as an indicator for another. The relative influence of disturbance and local environmental effects varied in the manner predicted, with disturbance stronger for trees and environment stronger for ferns.  相似文献
