For the first time, the plasmonic gold bipyramids (Au BPs) are introduced to the PbS colloidal quantum dot (CQD) solar cells for improved infrared light harvesting. The localized surface plasmon resonance peaks of Au BPs matches perfectly with the absorption peaks of conventional PbS CQDs. Owing to the geometrical novelty of Au BPs, they exhibit significantly stronger far‐field scattering effect and near‐field enhancement than conventional plasmonic Au nanospheres (NSs). Consequently, device open‐circuit voltage (Voc) and short‐circuit current (Jsc) are simultaneously enhanced, while plasmonic photovoltaic devices based on Au NSs only achieve improved Jsc. The different effects and working mechanisms of these two Au nanoparticles are systematically investigated. Moreover, to realize effective broadband light harvesting, Au BPs and Au NSs are used together to simultaneously enhance the device optical and electrical properties. As a result, a significantly increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.58% is obtained compared to the PCE of 8.09% for the control devices due to the synergistic effect of the two plasmonic Au nanoparticles. Thus, this work reveals the intriguing plasmonic effect of Au BPs in CQD solar cells and may provide insight into the future plasmonic enhancement for solution‐processed new‐generation solar cells.  相似文献

We demonstrate the optical response of metal nanoparticles and their interaction with organic-inorganic perovskite (methyl ammonia lead halide (CH3NH3PbI3)) environment using discrete dipole approximation (DDA) simulation technique. Important optical properties like absorption, scattering, and electric field calculations for metal nanoparticle using different geometry have been analyzed. The metal nanoparticles embedded in the perovskite media strongly support surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). The plasmonic interaction of metal nanoparticles with perovskite matrix is a strong function of MNP’s shape, size, and surrounding environment that can manipulate the optical properties considerably. The cylindrical shape of MNPs embedded in perovskite environment supports the SPR which is highly tunable to subwavelength range of 400–800 nm. Wide range of particle sizes has been selected for Ag, Au, and Al spherical and cylindrical nanostructures surrounded by perovskite matrix for simulation. The chosen hybrid material and anisotropy of structure together make a complex function for resonance shape and width. Among all MNPs, 70-nm spherical silver nanoparticle (NP) and cylindrical Ag NP having diameter of 50 nm and length of 70 nm (aspect ratio 1.4) generate strong electric field intensity that facilitates increased photon absorption. The plasmonic perovskite interaction plays an important role to improve the absorption of photon inside the thin film perovskite environment that may be applicable to photovoltaics and photonics.

The objective of this study is to enhance the efficiency of copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cells. To accomplish that, composition grading of absorber layer was carried out by using SILVACO’s technology aided computer design (TCAD) ATLAS program. Results showed a meaningful improvement of output parameters including open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Isc), fill factor (FF), and power conversion efficiency (η). For further performance improvement of the cell, Au plasmonic scattering nanoparticles were loaded on the top of the ZnO window layer. Plasmonic nanoparticles can restrict, absorb, navigate, or scatter the incident light. By using the spherical Au nanoparticles, a very good increase in the light absorption in the cell over the reference planar CIGS solar cell was observed. The highest η = 19.01% was achieved for the designed ultra-thin bandgap-graded CIGS solar cell decorated by Au nanoparticles.

Two-dimensional Ag/SiO2 nanocomposite gratings of 400 and 600 nm in grating constant are fabricated by etching the SiO2 slabs implanted with Ag ions, and their plasmonic extinction, absorption, and reflection behaviors are investigated. Our results indicate that no scattering light fields can exist near the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance wavelength (about 405 nm) of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) due to the intense LSP resonance absorption. Especially, when the gaps between nanocomposite veins have a width close in value to the LSP resonance wavelength of Ag NPs, the local light fields in the grating plane can be slightly enhanced due to an in-phase addition of the incident light fields and the diffractive light fields induced by the gap diffraction, leading to a slight red shift of LSP resonance mode of Ag NPs. Moreover, in the LSP resonance absorption region, although the grating diffraction can still occur, the diffractive light fields are extremely weak, and thus, the local light fields in the grating plane cannot be modified by coherently adding these extremely weak diffractive light fields to the incident light fields. As a result, the LSP resonance mode of Ag NPs will keep its position unchanged even though the grating constant is set to make the first grating order rightly change from evanescent to radiative character.

In this work, we investigate silver (Ag) nanoparticle-related plasmonic effect on light absorption in Si substrate. Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) deposited on top of Si were used to capture and couple incident light into these structures by forward scattering. We demonstrate that we can control nanoparticle size and shape while varying deposition time and annealing parameters. By the increase of the total time of the reaction process, morphology of Ag-NPs evolutes affecting the number and the width of surface plasmon resonance peaks, whereas for changed annealing parameters (temperature and time), the effect is more pronounced on the broadening and the position of peaks. Specific morphology of Ag-NPs can exhibit an interesting enhancement of optical properties which enables plasmon-related application in photovoltaic solar cells.  相似文献

Noble metal, especially gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles exhibit unique and tunable optical properties on account of their surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In this review, we discuss the SPR-enhanced optical properties of noble metal nanoparticles, with an emphasis on the recent advances in the utility of these plasmonic properties in molecular-specific imaging and sensing, photo-diagnostics, and selective photothermal therapy. The strongly enhanced SPR scattering from Au nanoparticles makes them useful as bright optical tags for molecular-specific biological imaging and detection using simple dark-field optical microscopy. On the other hand, the SPR absorption of the nanoparticles has allowed their use in the selective laser photothermal therapy of cancer. We also discuss the sensitivity of the nanoparticle SPR frequency to the local medium dielectric constant, which has been successfully exploited for the optical sensing of chemical and biological analytes. Plasmon coupling between metal nanoparticle pairs is also discussed, which forms the basis for nanoparticle assembly-based biodiagnostics and the plasmon ruler for dynamic measurement of nanoscale distances in biological systems.  相似文献

Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) like silver (Ag) strongly absorb the incident light and produce enhanced localized electric field at the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) frequency. Enormous theoretical and experimental research has focused on the plasmonic properties of the metallic nanoparticles with sizes greater than 10 nm. However, such studies on smaller sized NPs in the size range of 3 to 10 nm (quantum-sized regime) are sparse. In this size regime, the conduction band of the metal particles discretizes, thus altering plasmon properties of the NPs from classical to the quantum regime. In this study, plasmonic properties of the spherical Ag NPs in size range of 3 to 20 nm were investigated using both quantum and classical modeling to understand the importance of invoking quantum regime to accurately describing their properties in this size regime. Theoretical calculations using standard Mie theory were carried out to monitor the LSPR peak shift and electric field enhancement as a function of the size of the bare plasmonic nanoparticle and the refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium. Comparisons were made with and without invoking quantum regime. Also, the optical properties of metallic NPs conjugated with a chemical ligand using multi-layered Mie theory were studied, and interesting trends were observed.

The temperature-driven plasmon-exciton coupling in thermoresponsive dextran-graft-PNIPAM/Au nanoparticle/CdTe quantum dot (D-g-PNIPAM/Au NPs/CdTe QDs) hybrid nanosystem was studied. A significant (0.84 eV) splitting of the absorption peak was observed in the absorption spectrum of the nanosystem, which reflects the fact of formation of plexcitons, occurring due to strong plasmon-exciton coupling. An increasing with time plasmonic enhancement of the photoluminescence of CdTe QDs was revealed, as a result of the penetration of quantum dots into the volume of the D-g-PNIPAM/Au NP hybrid nanosystem and bonding to it. The heating–cooling cycle of the aqueous solution of the studied nanosystem leads to a reversible quenching-recovery alteration of the QD photoluminescence. The quenching was rationalized as a result of an increased probability of nonradiative resonance energy transfer (RET) from CdTe QDs to Au NPs, which occurs due to shortening of the NP-QD distance, caused by shrinking of the macromolecule due to cooling-induced lower critical solution temperature phase transition. Increasing the NP-QD distance in the heating stage recovers the QD PL intensity. The observed effect opens up opportunities for the controlled reversible temperature-driven tuning of the photoluminescence intensity of D-g-PNIPAM/Au NP/CdTe QD nanosystem, which is highly important for its potential use in photonics and biomedical applications.

Time-resolved polarization-dependent transient absorption has been used to study the plasmonicity of the optical transitions of Ag nanoparticles and nanoclusters. The lack of a measureable polarization anisotropy in the nanoparticles is indicative of the ultrafast electron-electron scattering while the anisotropy with a depolarization timescale of 500 fs observed in the nanoclusters indicates the excitation of a non-plasmonic state. The short lifetime of the anisotropy is a measure of electronic coupling between nearly degenerate states and is thus proposed as a sensitive measurement of the plasmonic content of the optical transitions of nanoclusters.

We use an optodynamic model to study the interaction of pulsed laser radiation of different duration with mono- and polydisperse dimers and trimers of plasmonic nanoparticles as resonant domains of colloid Ag multiparticle aggregates. A comparative analysis of the influence of pulse duration on the kinetic characteristics of domains accompanied by the change in their local structure was carried out taking into account the intensity of incident radiation. The obtained results explain the reasons for laser photochromic reactions in materials containing colloidal aggregates of plasmonic nanoparticles.  相似文献

Scattering efficiencies of Ag–Cu, Ag–Au, and Au–Cu alloy nanoparticles are studied based on Mie theory for their possible applications in solar cells. The effect of size (radius), surrounding medium, and alloy composition on the scattering efficiency at the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelengths has been reported. In the alloy nanoparticles of Ag1?x Cu x , Au1?x Cu x and Ag1?x Au x ; the scattering efficiency gets red-shifted with increase in x. Moreover, the scattering efficiency enhancement can be tuned and controlled with both the alloy composition and the surrounding medium refractive index. A linear relationship which is in good agreement to the experimental observations between the scattering efficiency and metal composition in the alloys are found. The effect of nanoparticle size and LSPR wavelength (scattering peak position) on the full width half maxima and scattering efficiency has also been studied. Comparison of Au–Ag, Au–Cu, and Ag–Cu alloy nanoparticles with 50-nm radii shows the optical response of Ag–Cu alloy nanoparticle with wide bandwidth in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum making them suitable for plasmonic solar cells. Further, the comparison of Ag–Cu alloy and core@shell nanoparticles of similar size and surrounding medium shows that Cu@Ag nanoparticle exhibits high scattering efficiency with nearly the same bandwidth.  相似文献

The plasmonic effects due to the coupling of silver spherical nanoparticles with silver nanograting electrodes on active medium of the photo detector are investigated. Calculations show that the coupling of nanoparticles and nanograting electrodes at the surface of active medium lead to reflection wave into the active medium, and electrodes can participate in the absorption and quantum efficiency. Calculations show that the addition of nanograting electrodes to the structure can lead to increase the absorption coefficient up to 120% respect to the plasmonic structure containing only nanoparticles and about 4.5 times that of conventional (metal-semiconductor -metal ) MSM photo detectors.

The plasmonic effect is introduced in solar thermal areas to enhance light harvest and absorption. The optical properties of plasmonic nanofluid are simulated by finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Due to the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, an intensive absorption peak is observed at 0.5 μm. The absorption characteristics are sensitive to particle size and concentration. As the particle size increases, the absorption peak is broadened and shifted to longer wavelength. The absorption of SiO2/Ag plasmonic nanofluid is improved gradually as the volume concentration increases, especially in the UV region. The absorption edge is shifted from 0.6 to 1.0 μm as the volume concentration increases from 0.001 to 0.01. The thermal simulation of suspended SiO2/Ag nanoparticle shows a uniform temperature rise of 17.91 K under solar irradiation (AM 1.5), while under the same condition, the temperature rises in Ag nanoparticle and Al nanoparticle are 11.12 and 5.39 K, respectively. The core/shell plasmonic nanofluid exhibits a higher photothermal performance, which has a potential application in photothermal areas. A higher temperature rise can be obtained by improving the incident light intensity or optical absorption properties of nanoparticles.  相似文献

Au plasmonic hollow spherical nanostructures were synthesized by electrochemical reduction (GRR, the Galvanic Replacement Reaction) using Ag nanoparticles as templates. From UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, it was found that the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of gold hollow spherical nanostructures first showed red shift and then blue shift. However, further addition of gold precursor (HAuCl4) resulted into a red shift of SPR peak. The morphological changes from Ag nanoparticles to Au hollow nanostructures were assessed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)analysis. The Mie Scattering theory based simulations of SPR of Au hollow nanostructures were performed which are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Based on the experimental observations and theoretical calculations, a complete growth mechanism for Au hollow nanostructures is proposed.  相似文献

We studied the excitation-power-dependent red shift and broadening of the emission spectra of monodisperse CdSe/ZnS quantum dot solids when they are in close proximity of gold metallic nanoparticles. Our results suggest that these features are the signs of plasmonic enhancement of the interdot energy transfer in such solids leading to (a) efficient funneling of excitons to the locations where quantum dots with large CdSe cores are and (b) near complete depletion of excitons in regions where the quantum dots with incomplete shells or/and small core sizes are located. We studied the impacts of the heat generated by the metallic nanoparticles and discussed the effects of excitation-power-dependent photoionization rates. The uneven spatial distribution of excitons in monodisperse quantum dot solids in the presence of metallic nanoparticles suggests that plasmonic fields can drive significant spatial migration of energy in such structures.  相似文献

In this paper, the light absorption in the active layer of polymer solar cells (OPV) by using plasmonic nanocrystals with a hexagonal lattice structure is investigated. To study the relationship between the performance of the OPV solar cell and its active layer, a three-dimensional model of its morphology is utilized. Therefore, the three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain method and Lumerical software were used to measure the field distribution and light absorption in the active layer in terms of wavelength. OPV solar cells with bilayer and bulk heterojunction structured cells were designed using hexagonal lattice crystals with plasmonic nanoparticles, as well as core–shell geometry to govern a design to optimize light trapping in the active layer. The parameters of shape, material, periodicity, size, and the thickness of the active layer as a function of wavelength in OPV solar cells have been investigated. A very thin active layer and an ultra-thin shell were used to achieve the highest increase in optical absorption. The strong alternating electromagnetic field around the core–shell plasmonic nanoparticles resulting from the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) suggested by the Ag plasmonic nanocrystals increased the intrinsic optical absorption in the active layer poly(3-hexylthiophene):phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM). Based on the photovoltaic results, the short circuit current ranged from 19.7 to 26.7 mA/cm2.

This paper explores geometry-sensitive scattering from plasmonic nanoparticles deposited on top of a thin-film amorphous silicon solar cell to enhance light trapping in the photo-active layer. Considering the nanoparticles as ideal spheroids, the broadband optical absorption by the silicon layer is analyzed and optimized with respect to the nanoparticle aspect ratio in both the cases of resonant (silver) and nonresonant (aluminum) plasmonic nanostructures. It is demonstrated how the coupling of sunlight with the semiconductor can be improved through tuning the nanoparticle shape in both the dipolar and multi-polar scattering regimes, as well as discussed how the native oxide shell formed on the nanospheroid surface after the prolonged action of air and moisture affects the light trapping in the active layer and changes the photocurrent generation by the solar cell.  相似文献

Studies comparing the effect of adding two different nanoparticle compositions on the plasmonic properties of Au nanovoid arrays were undertaken. Surface-enhanced resonance luminescence and surface-enhanced resonance Raman studies comparing dispersed Ag nanoparticles and Ag nanoparticle aggregates on gold nanovoid arrays were undertaken. These studies showed that using Ag nanoparticle aggregates increased both luminescence and Raman efficiency relative to when dispersed nanoparticles were used; in addition, these studies also showed that adding dispersed Ag nanoparticles supported a more reproducible enhancement in luminescence and Raman across the substrate compared to using Ag nanoparticle aggregates. Finite element analysis simulations indicated that surface plasmon polariton distribution in the sample was affected by the presence of the Ag nanoparticles on the Au nanovoid array.  相似文献

Solutions of Ag and Au nanoparticles are strongly colored because of localized surface plasmon resonance in the UV/visible spectral region. The optical properties of these nanoparticles may be tuned to suit the needs of the application. This article summarizes our work in recent years on the solution synthesis of nanoparticles with tunable optical properties. The systems of interest include zero-dimensional bimetallic Ag–Au nanoparticles with different structures, one-, two-, and three-dimensional anisotropic monometallic Ag or Au nanoparticles. All of these nanosystems were prepared from colloidal synthesis through simple changes in the synthesis conditions. This is a demonstration of the versatility of colloidal synthesis as a convenient scalable technique for tuning the properties of metallic nanoparticles.
