Net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (gs), and stomatal limitation (Ls) were investigated in two Syringa species. The saturation irradiance (SI) was 400 µmol m-2s-1 for S. pinnatifolia and 1 700 µmol m-2s-1 for S. oblata. Compared with S. oblata, S. pinnatifolia had extremely low g s . Unlike S. oblata, the maximal photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in S. pinnatifoliaoccurred around 08:00 and then fell down, indicating this species was sensitive to higher temperature and high photosynthetic photon flux density. However, such phenomenon was interrupted by the leaf development rhythms before summer. A relatively lower PN together with a lower leaf area and shoot growth showed the capacity for carbon assimilation was poorer in S. pinnatifolia.  相似文献

Diurnal changes of photosynthesis in the leaves of grapevine (Vitis vinifera × V. labrusca) cultivars Campbell Early and Kyoho grown in the field were compared with respect to gas exchanges and actual quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2) in late May. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) of the two cultivars rapidly increased in the morning, saturated at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) from 1200 to 1500 μmol m−2 s−1 between 10:00 and 12:00 and slowly decreased after midday. Maximum PN was 13.7 and 12.5 μmol m−2 s−1 in Campbell Early and Kyoho, respectively. The stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate changed in parallel with PN, indicating that PN was greatly affected by gs. However, the decrease in PN after midday under saturating PPFD was also associated with the observed depression of ΦPS2 at high PPFD. The substantial increase in the leaf to air vapour pressure deficit after midday might also contribute to decline of gs and PN.  相似文献

Variation in photosynthetic parameters was observed between eight contrasting cacao (Theobroma cacao) genotypes. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) ranged from 3.4 to 5.7 μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1 for the genotypes IMC 47 and SCA 6, respectively. Furthermore, genotypic differences were detected in quantum efficiency ranging from 0.020 to 0.043 μmol(CO2) μmol−1(photon) for UF 676 and AMAZ 15/15, respectively. Differences in PN were correlated with both stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf nitrogen per unit area. Some variation in water use efficiency was observed between genotypes, both intrinsic (PN/gs) and instantaneous (PN/transpiration rate). Both measures of water use efficiency were a negative function of specific leaf area. Evidence was found for a trade-off mechanism between cacao genotypes in photosynthesis and leaf structure. High photosynthetic rate, expressed on a mass basis was associated with smaller leaves. Furthermore, thinner leaves were compensated for by a higher nitrogen content per unit mass.  相似文献

Response of net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (c i), and photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) of photosystem 2 (PS2) was assessed in Eucalyptus cladocalyx grown for long duration at 800 (C800) or 380 (C380) μmol mol-1 CO2 concentration under sufficient water supply or under water stress. The well-watered plants at C800 showed a 2.2 fold enhancement of P N without any change in g s. Under both C800 and C380, water stress decreased P N and g s significantly without any substantial reduction of c i, suggesting that both stomatal and non-stomatal factors regulated P N. However, the photosynthetic efficiency of PS2 was not altered. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal trends in net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration rate (E), vapour pressure deficit, temperature, photosynthetic photon flux density, and water use efficiency (WUE) were compared in a two-year-old Dalbergia sissoo and Hardwickia binata plantation. Mean daily maximum P N in D. sissoo ranged from 21.40±2.60 μmol m−2 s−1 in rainy season I to 13.21±2.64 μmol m−2 s−1 in summer whereas in H. binata it was 20.04±1.20 μmol m−2 s−1 in summer and 13.64±0.16 μmol m−2 s−1 in winter. There was a linear relationship between daily maximum P N and g s in D. sissoo but there was no strong linear relationship between P N and g s in H. binata. In D. sissoo, the reduction in g s led to a reduction in both P N and E enabling the maintenance of WUE during dry season thereby managing unfavourable environmental conditions efficiently whereas in H. binata, an increase in g s causes an increase of P N and E with a significant moderate WUE.  相似文献

Foliar gas exchange characteristics, understorey microclimate, and crown irradiation were assessed for saplings of eight canopy tree species in two plots of neotropical rain forest with different degrees of canopy opening. Species studied belonged to different putative guilds: shade intolerants (both short-lived--pioneers--and long-lived), intermediates, and shade-tolerants. A considerable overlap was recorded between species in values of the photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area (PN). The highest median PN (1.26 μmol m-2 s-1) was recorded in the pioneer Croton killipianus, while slightly lower median values were recorded in Simarouba amara and Pentaclethra macroloba, and markedly lower values in two species of Vochysiaceae (Qualea paraense and Vochysia ferruginea), both putative intolerants. Highest median stomatal conductance (gs) was also shown by C. killipianus, while S. amara, P. macroloba, and L. procera exhibited intermediate values, and the lowest gs was shown by V. ferruginea and Q. paraense. Overall irradiance and crown irradiation, PN, and gs of saplings were higher in the plot which had previously received a silvicultural treatment. Most values of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were <100 μmol m-2 s-1 in both plots, with shortlived peaks of up to 2000 μmol m-2 s-1 in the treated plot. When the relationship between PN and irradiance (I) was examined by fitting PN/I curves, the degree of fit varied markedly between species, values of the regression coefficient r2 were between 0.09 and 0.51. No significant differences between species were recorded in Pmax and species also demonstrated little variation in the predicted values of dark respiration (RD), values varying between -0.51 and -1.46 μmol m-2 s-1 in Q. paraense and Minquartia guianensis, respectively. Fitted values of apparent quantum efficiency were also fairly uniform, generally falling within the range 0.02-0.03 mol(CO2) mol-1(photon). To elucidate whether dipterocarp species, dominant late-successional species of tropical forests in Southeast Asia, actually have a disadvantage when planted on open site in terms of their photosynthetic characteristics, we investigated photosynthesis in dipterocarp seedlings planted in the open on degraded sandy soils in southern Thailand. These species were compared with seedlings of Acacia mangium Willd., a fast-growing tropical leguminous tree, which is often planted on degraded open site in Southeast Asia. The dipterocarp seedlings had an irradiance-saturated net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), carboxylation efficiency, and photosynthetic capacity comparable to or superior to those of A. mangium. In particular, seedlings of Dipterocarpus obtusifolius Teijsm. ex Miq. showed an irradian-ce-saturated P N of 21 μmol m−2 s−1, a value higher than any previously reported for a dipterocarp species, accompanied by high g s (0.7 mol m−2 s−1) and high photosynthetic capacity. Thus dipterocarp species do not necessarily have a disadvantage in terms of their photosynthetic characteristics on open sites with degraded sandy soils.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) in an adult oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) canopy were highest in the 9th leaf and progressively declined with leaf age. Larger leaf area (LA) and leaf dry mass (LDM) were recorded in middle leaves. P N showed a significant positive correlation with g s and a negative relationship with leaf mass per area (ALM). The oil palm leaf remains photosynthetically active for a longer time in the canopy which contributes significantly to larger dry matter production in general and greater fresh fruit bunch yields in particular.  相似文献

The model couples stomatal conductance (g s) and net photosynthetic rate (P N) describing not only part of the curve up to and including saturation irradiance (I max), but also the range above the saturation irradiance. Maximum stomatal conductance (g smax) and I max can be calculated by the coupled model. For winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) the fitted results showed that maximum P N (P max) at 600 μmol mol−1 was more than at 350 μmol mol−1 under the same leaf temperature, which can not be explained by the stomatal closure at high CO2 concentration because g smax at 600 μmol mol−1 was less than at 350 μmol mol−1. The irradiance-response curves for winter wheat had similar tendency, e.g. at 25 °C and 350 μmol mol−1 both P N and g s almost synchronously reached the maximum values at about 1 600 μmol m−2 s−1. At 25 °C and 600 μmol mol−1 the I max corresponding to P max and g smax was 2 080 and 1 575 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively.  相似文献

The effects of leaf to air vapour pressure differences (ΔW) on net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) were examined in the leaves of two tropical rain forest trees, Eugenia grandis and Pongamia pinnata, and two temperate evergreen trees, Viburnum awabuki and Daphniphyllum macropodum. A single leaf was set inside a small chamber and ΔW was varied from 7 to 24 mmol mol-1 at 25 and 500 μmol m-2 s-1 of photon flux density. PN and gs of the two tropical rain forest trees decreased with increasing ΔW, while the two temperate evergreen trees were not highly responsive to ΔW. P. pinnata was more sensitive to ΔW in its stomatal response, and had a higher stomatal density and higher stomatal index than did the two temperate trees and another tropical tree. Significant reductions i n gs and intercellular CO2 concentrations in the two tropical trees at high ΔW suggest that the decline of PN was due to the decrease in gs. The responses of PN and gs indicated that the tropical trees were more sensitive to ΔW than were the temperate ones. Independent short-term effects of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 50–400 μmol m−2 s−1, external CO2 concentration (C a) of 85–850 cm3 m−3, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) of 0.9–2.2 kPa on net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), leaf internal CO2 concentration (C i), and transpiration rates (E) were investigated in three cacao genotypes. In all these genotypes, increasing PPFD from 50 to 400 μmol m−2 s−1 increased P N by about 50 %, but further increases in PPFD up to 1 500 μmol m−2 s−1 had no effect on P N. Increasing C a significantly increased P N and C i while g s and E decreased more strongly than in most trees that have been studied. In all genotypes, increasing VPD reduced P N, but the slight decrease in g s and the slight increase in C i with increasing VPD were non-significant. Increasing VPD significantly increased E and this may have caused the reduction in P N. The unusually small response of g s to VPD could limit the ability of cacao to grow where VPD is high. There were no significant differences in gas exchange characteristics (g s, C i, E) among the three cacao genotypes under any measurement conditions.  相似文献

At the grain-filling stage, net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylation efficiency (CE) were correlated in order to find the determinant of photosynthetic capacity in rice leaves. For a flag leaf, P N in leaf middle region was higher than in its upper region, and leaf basal region had the lowest P N value. The differences in g s and CE were similar. P N, g s, and CE gradually declined from upper to basal leaves, showing a leaf position gradient. The correlation coefficient between P N and CE was much higher than that between P N and g s in both cases, and P N was negatively correlated with intercellular CO2 concentration (C i). Hence the carboxylation activity or activated amount of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase rather than gs was the determinant of the photosynthetic capacity in rice leaves. In addition, in flag leaves of different tillers P N was positively correlated with g s, but negatively correlated with C i. Thus g s is not the determinant of the photosynthetic capacity in rice leaves. The study was supported by the State Key Basic Research and Development Plan (No.G1998010100).  相似文献

The net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration (E) ofHardwickia binata Roxb. leaves were reduced due to decrease in the leaf water potential (ψw) from -2.0 to - 5.7 MPa. PN partially recovered in the treated plants upon rewatering. Decrease in gs due to water stress may be the main factor for reduction of PN. The responses of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence of field-growing Ulmus pumila seedlings to changes in simulated precipitation were studied in Hunshandak Sandland, China. Leaf water potential (Ψwp), net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) were significantly increased with enhancement of precipitation from 0 to 20 mm (p<0.01), indicating stomatal limitation of U. pumila seedlings that could be avoided when soil water was abundant. However, P N changed slightly when precipitation exceeded 20 mm (p>0.05), indicating more precipitation than 20 mm had no significant effects on photosynthesis. Maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, PS 2 (Fv/Fm) increased from 0.53 to 0.78 when rainfall increased from 0 to 10 mm, and Fv/Fm maintained a steady state level when rainfall was more than 10 mm. Water use efficiency (WUE) decreased significantly (from 78–95 to 23–27 μmol mol−1) with enhancement of rainfalls. P N showed significant linear correlations with both g s and Ψwp (p<0.0001), which implied that leaf water status influenced gas exchange of U. pumila seedlings. The 20-mm precipitation (soil water content at about 15 %, v/v) might be enough for the growth of elm seedlings. When soil water content (SWC) reached 10 %, down regulation of PS2 photochemical efficiency could be avoided, but stomatal limitation to photosynthesis remained. When SWC exceeded 15 %, stomatal limitation to photosynthesis could be avoided, indicating elm seedlings might tolerate moderate drought.  相似文献

The possibility to improve the recovery of sugar beet plants after water stress by application of synthetic cytokinins N6-benzyladenine (BA) or N6-(m-hydroxybenzyl)adenosine (HBA) was tested. Relative water content (RWC), net photosynthetic rate (PN), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), chlorophyll (Chl) a and Chl b contents, and photosystem 2 efficiency characterized by variable to maximal fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm) were measured in control plants, in water-stressed plants, and after rehydration (4, 8, 24, and 48 h). Water stress markedly decreased parameters of gas exchange, but they started to recover soon after irrigation. Application of BA or HBA to the substrate or sprayed on leaves only slightly stimulated recovery of PN, E, and gs in rehydrated plants, especially during the first phases of recovery. Chl contents decreased only under severe water stress and Fv/Fm ratio was not significantly affected by water stress applied. Positive effects of BA or HBA application on Chl content and Fv/Fm ratio were mostly not observed.  相似文献

The effects of chilling (CT, day/night temperatures of 12/10 °C, an irradiance of 250 μmol m?2 s?1), chilling combined with a low irradiance (CL, 12/10 °C, 80 μmol m?2 s?1), and a high temperature (HT, 42/40 °C, 250 μmol m?2 s?1) on chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, and gas exchange were studied in two watermelon cultivars, ZJ8424 and YS01, differing in their resistance. The chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), and transpiration rate (E) decreased substantially, whereas the intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) increased when the two watermelon cultivars were grown under these stresses. The photosynthetic parameters showed greater changes at chilling than at the high temperature, and the CL caused a more pronounced inhibition in PN compared with the CT. After 2 d exposure to the CT, YS01 had higher PN, gs, and E, but a lower ci compared with ZJ8424. The maximum efficiency of photosystem (PS) II photochemistry (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PS II photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching (qP), and electron transport rate (ETR) decreased under the CT and CL but showed only a slight drop under the HT. All these stresses significantly increased non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The CT brought more damage to the photosynthetic apparatus of leaves compared with the CL. In addition, after returning to normal conditions (25/15 °C, 250 μmol m?2 s?1) for 3 d, the photosynthetic parameters recovered to pre-stress levels in HT treated seedlings but not in CT treated seedlings. In conclusion, the low irradiance could help to alleviate the extent of photoinhibition of PS II photochemistry caused by chilling and cv. ZJ8424 was more sensitive to the extreme temperatures than cv. YS01.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to establish whether the quantity and the quality of light affect growth and development of Withania somnifera plantlets. We have studied growth and histo-physiological parameters [stomatal characteristics, chloroplastic pigments concentrations, photosynthesis, and transpiration (E)] of W. somnifera plantlets regenerated under various light intensities, or monochromatic light or under a mixture of two colors of light in tissue culture conditions. Plantlets grown under a photon flux density (PFD) of 30 μmol m-2 s-1 showed greater growth and development than those raised under other PFDs. Chlorophylls and carotenoids, numbers of stomata, rate of photosynthesis (PN) and transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (gs), and water use efficiency (WUE) increased with increasing the PFD up to 60 μmol m-2 s-1. Light quality also affected plantlets growth and physiology. Highest growth was observed under fluorescent and in a mixture of blue and red light. Very few stomata were developed in any of the monochromatic light but under fluorescent or under a mixture of two colors stomatal numbers increased. Similarly, gs, E, PN, and WUE were also higher under fluorescent light and under a mixture of red and blue light. Regressional analysis showed a linear relationship between PN (r 2 = 70) and gs and between E (r 2 = 0.95) and gs. In conclusion, both the quality and the quantity of light affect growth of plantlets, development of stomata and physiological responses differently depending on the intensity and the wavelength of light.  相似文献

Leaf stomatal density (SD), net photosynthetic rates (P N), and stomatal conductance (g s) of Hordeum vulgare and Pisum sativum cultivars in Himalaya increased with altitude. Higher P N and leaf temperature under low CO2 partial pressure at high altitudes could evoke a higher g s and SD to allow sufficient influx of CO2 as well as more efficient leaf cooling through transpiration.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes K-65 (salt tolerant) and HD 2329 (salt sensitive) were grown in pots under natural conditions and irrigated with NaCl solutions of electrical conductivity (ECe) 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0 dS m−1. Control plants were irrigated without saline water. Observations were made on the top most fully expanded leaf at tillering, anthesis, and grain filling stages. The net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) were reduced with the addition of NaCl. The reduction was higher in HD 2329 than in K-65. Salinity enhanced leaf to air temperature gradient (ΔT) in both the genotypes. NaCl increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POX); the percent increment was higher in K-65. The sodium and potassium contents were higher in the roots and leaves of K-65 over HD 2329. Thus at cellular level K-65 has imparted salt tolerance by manipulating P N, E, g s, and K accumulation in leaves along with overproduction of antioxidative enzyme activities (SOD and POX).  相似文献
