During the 1989 corn harvest season, numerous reports of equine leukoencephalomalacia (ELEM) outbreaks and a pulmonary edema (PPE) syndrome in swine from several regions of the United States were received by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), Ames, Iowa. Previous and concurrent research linked Fusarium moniliforme and fumonisin-contaminated feeds to both diseases. Chemical and mycological investigations revealed fumonisin B1 (FB1) concentrations of 20 to 360 ppm in suspect swine feeds and 8 to 117 ppm in suspect equine feeds. Nonproblem feeds contained concentrations below 8 ppm. Fusarium moniliforme and Fusarium proliferatum were isolated from both problem and nonproblem equine and swine feeds. When cultured on autoclaved corn, the F. moniliforme and F. proliferatum isolates produced respective FB1 and fumonisin B2 (FB2) that range from less than 5 to more than 2450 ppm and less than 5 to more than 1000 ppm, respectively. Isolates from both problem and nonproblem feeds produced high levels (greater than 500 ppm) in culture. Reported here is a review of chemical and mycological data resulting from the study of several cases of PPE and ELEM.  相似文献

Using a fluorescent whole-cell Escherichia coli biosensor previously developed in our laboratory, we determined total and bioavailable lysine in four feed ingredients (soybean, cottonseed, meat and bone meal, and sorghum) and three complete feeds (chick starter and finisher, and swine starter). The same feed sources were analyzed for total lysine by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and bioavailable lysine by chick bioassay. No significant differences were found between bioavailable lysine estimates for soybean, cottonseed, meat and bone meal, chick starter and finisher, and swine starter obtained by the fluorescent E. coli biosensor and chick bioassay. Except for sorghum, the E. coli biosensor estimates for total lysine were highly comparable to those obtained by HPLC. Comparisons were also conducted between conventionally performed optical density-based and the newly developed fluorescence-based lysine assay. The lack of significant differences in data obtained for total and bioavailable lysine by both detection modes indicated reliance and accuracy of the fluorescent E. coli biosensor. Overall results suggest that the microbial assay based on green fluorescent protein fluorescence represents a promising alternative method for lysine quantification.  相似文献

Microalgae feeds are currently used in relatively small amounts in aquaculture, mainly for the production of larvae and juvenile shell- and finfish, as well as for raising the zooplankton required for feeding of juvenile animals. The blue-green algaSpirulina is used in substantial amounts (over 100 t y–1) as a fish and shrimp feed, and even larger markets can be projected if production costs could be reduced. Another potential large-scale application of microalgae is the cultivation ofHaematococcus for the production of the carotenoid astaxanthin, which gives salmon flesh its reddish color. In the long-term microalgae biomass high in lipids (omega-3 fatty acids) may be developed as substitutes for fish oil-based aquaculture feeds. In shrimp ponds the indigenous algal blooms supply a part of the dietary requirements of the animals, but it is difficult to maximize algal productivities. A separate algal production system could feed the shrimps and minimize the need for added feed. Bivalves feed essentially exclusively on marine microalgae throughout their life cycle. The development of cultivation technologies for such microalgae would allow the onshore production of these animals, with greatly improved product quality and safety.This paper was presented at the Symposium on Applied Phycology at the Fourth International Phycological Congress, Duke University.  相似文献

Cereals and cereal- derived products constitute the base of human and animal feeding in South American countries. This review attempts to give an overview of the ochratoxin A (OTA) occurrence and potential sources of OTA contamination in those products. The environmental conditions as humidity and temperature in the colonization of the substrates by Aspergillus section Nigri isolated from corn kernels were also discussed. The available information on the ochratoxigenic mycoflora and OTA presence in corn, corn based food and feed is limited. Only few surveys have been carried out in Argentina, Ecuador and Brazil; which showed that Aspergillus niger aggregate and A. ochraceus species would be the main source of OTA. It’s possible to emphasize that, the species A. carbonarius has not been isolated from these substrates and Penicillium verrucosum was isolated only from pig feeds of Argentinean samples in low percentage. Studies about the ecophysiology of ochratoxigenic fungi and OTA occurrence are in progress in Latin America to reduce the impact of this toxin in the food chain. Carina E. Magnoli, Stella M. In a preliminary study, 256 feed samples collected from different parts of Northern India were examined for the presence of aflatoxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus/parasiticus and for detection of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Out of 198 A. flavus and 15 A. parasiticus strains isolated, 76% and 86% respectively, were found to be toxigenic. Aflatoxin B1 content of these feeds, as estimated by thin layer chromatography (TLC) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were very high (average 0.412 ± 0.154 ppm) in comparison to the permissible Indian regulation level (0.03 ppm). Seasonal variation of incidence and level of toxin in feed was recorded and it was high during monsoon/post monsoon period.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Domestic swine faeces and fresh faeces from trapped barnyard rats were heavily contaminated with Prototheca zopfii, a cause of dairy cow mastitis. When the pigs and rats were maintained on Prototheca-free diets, the transient intestinal population of P. zopfii decreased precipitously and disappeared. When combined with the information that other farm animals excrete P. zopfii, it was concluded that contaminated animal feed may be the source of large numbers of P. zopfii in the farm environment. We found P. zopfii in wet spoiled feed. Rats are logical vectors for contamination of feed.  相似文献

Minimal moisture content for growth and aflatoxin production by Aspergillus parasiticus in mixed feeds was studied. Minimal moisture content for growth is 16.51%+/–0.45. Very low amounts of aflatoxins are accumulated at days 1 or 2 after the growth started when the initial moisture content of the mixed feed was 17% or lower; on the other hand, significant amounts of aflatoxin are detected when it was 18% or higher.  相似文献

Carotenoids represent a group of valuable molecules for the pharmaceutical, chemical, food and feed industries, not only because they can act as vitamin A precursors, but also for their coloring, antioxidant and possible tumor-inhibiting activity. Animals cannot synthesize carotenoids, and these pigments must therefore be added to the feeds of farmed species. The synthesis of different natural commercially important carotenoids (β-carotene, torulene, torularhodin and astaxanthin) by several yeast species belonging to the genera Rhodotorula and Phaffia has led to consider these microorganisms as a potential pigment sources. In this review, we discuss the biosynthesis, factors affecting carotenogenesis in Rhodotorula and Phaffia strains, strategies for improving the production properties of the strains and directions for potential utility of carotenoid-synthesizing yeast as a alternative source of natural carotenoid pigments.  相似文献

This study was performed to examine the appetite and the corresponding plasma and tissue distribution of florfenicol when administered to healthy groups of cod using medicated and non‐medicated salmonid and marine feeds. Marine feed contains approximately 18% fat whereas salmonid feed contains approx. 30% fat. Two groups of fish were medicated with florfenicol at a dosage of 10 mg kg?1 day?1 for 10 consecutive days when the drug was administered either via marine or salmonid pellets. Two groups of fish also received either non‐medicated marine or salmonid pellets. Twenty‐four hours after giving the medicated marine feed, 14 out of 20 fish contained detectable concentrations of florfenicol with mean values (n = 14) of 4.67 ± 4.02 μg ml?1 in plasma, 2.29 ± 2.11 μg g?1 in muscle and 0.79 ± 0.69 μg g?1 in the liver. In the fish given medicated salmonid feed, 18 of 20 fish contained detectable concentrations of florfenicol with mean values (n = 18) of 1.77 ± 1.84 μg ml?1 in plasma, 0.75 ± 0.66 μg g?1 in muscle and 0.30 ± 0.25 μg g?1 in the liver. Decreased feed intake of the salmonid feed, both medicated and non‐medicated, was noted when compared to medicated and non‐medicated marine feed. No difference in feed consumption was registered between medicated and non‐medicated marine feed, however a difference was noted between the medicated and non‐medicated salmonid feed.  相似文献

The biology of the noctuid,Tyta luctuosa (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lep.: Noctuidae), a defoliator of field bindweed,Convolvulus arvensis L., was studied in southern Europe.T. luctuosa is widely distributed and feeds on both thick stands and scattered host populations growing in a diversity of habitats. It undergoes 2 and perhaps a partial 3rd generation/year in southern Europe and is active during most of the growing season ofC. arvensis. In the laboratory the total time from egg to adult averages 45.6 days. There are 5 larval instars. Adult females deposit on average over 400 eggs. The larvae being able to feed and develop on native North AmericanCalystegia spp. in the laboratory, there are some reservations about its release in North America. However, the moth has potential value as a biological control agent for field bindeed in the western USA where it would fill an almost unoccupied niche.   相似文献

To determine and compare innate preferences of the parasitoid speciesCotesia glomerata andC. rubecula for different plant-herbivore complexes, long-range (1-m) foraging behavior was studied in dual-choice experiments in a wind tunnel. In this study we tested the hypothesis that naive females of the specialistC. rubecula should show more pronounced preferences for different plant-herbivore complexes than females of the generalistC. glomerata. The herbivore species used were the pieridsPieris brassicae, P. rapae, P. Napi, andAporia crataegi and the nonhostsPlutella xylostella andMamestra brassicae. All herbivore species feed mainly on cabbage and wild crucifers, exceptAporia crataegi, which feeds on species of Rosaceae. Both parasitoid species preferred herbivore-damaged plants over nondamaged plants. NeitherC. rubecula norC. glomerata discriminated between plants infested by different caterpillar species, not even between plants infested by host-and nonhost species. Both parasitoid species showed preferences for certain cabbage cultivars and plant species. No differences were found in innate host-searching behavior betweenC. glomerata andC. rubecula. The tritrophic system cabbage-caterpillars-Cotesia sp. seems to lack specificity on the herbivore level, whereas on the plant level differences in attractiveness to parasitoids were found.  相似文献

Freshly harvested soybean, rice and corn from farms and corn-based pelleted feeds were collected from ranches from the coastal and mountain regions in Ecuador during 1998, and assessed for fungal contamination. The most prevalent fungi on pelleted feed were Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium graminearum. The prevalent fungi recovered from soybean were F. verticillioides, F. semitectum, Aspergillus flavus and A. ochraceus. In rice, F. oxysporum was the most prevalent toxigenic fungal species recorded, followed by F. verticillioides and A. flavus. In corn, F. verticillioides was the most prevalent fungus isolated in both the coastal and mountain regions, with high isolation frequencies of A. flavus and A. parasiticus at the coast. Based on the toxigenic species recovered, ochratoxin A may pose a contamination risk for soybean. A higher probability of aflatoxin contamination of corn was found in the coastal samples compared to those of the mountain region, while a risk of fumonisin contamination of corn exists in both regions.This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Arthropods often engage in complex trophic interactions such as intraguild predation (IGP), true omnivory (i.e., feeding on plants and prey), and apparent competition. Theoretical treatments of the effects of such interactions on herbivore populations have been concerned almost entirely with equilibrium conditions. Yet these interactions are common in non-equilibrium settings such as agroecosystems, where they are likely to have a strong influence on pest populations. We therefore tested short-term effects of IGP and food supplementation on interactions between two predators (the phytoseiid mite Neoseiulus cucumeris and the anthocorid bug Orius laevigatus) and their shared prey, Frankliniella occidentalis, on strawberry plants. All three consumers feed on strawberry pollen, both mites and bugs prey on thrips, and the bug also feeds on the mites (IGP). Strong IGP on mites (IG prey) by the bugs (IG predator) was recorded in structurally-simple arenas. In a more complex setting (whole-plants), however, the intensity of IGP differed among plant structures. Likewise, pollen supplementation reduced both IGP and predation on thrips in a structurally simple setting. In the whole-plant experiment, IGP was more intense on pollen-bearing than pollen-free flowers. The study illustrated how spatial dynamics, generated when consumers track food sources differently in the habitat and possibly when herbivorous and IG prey alter their distribution to escape predation, led to site-specific configuration of interacting populations. The intensity of resulting trophic interactions was weakened by food supplementation and by increased complexity of the habitat.  相似文献

Sea urchin roe is a valuable food product. The commercial potential of Echinus esculentusL. (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) was assessed both by surveying field populations and gonad growth in response to artificial feeds. Urchins were collected from four locations on the Scottish west coast between June and August of 1998. The roe content was found to be of variable quality. A relatively low percentage of urchins (34.9%) had roe which was considered marketable both in terms of yield and colour. Urchins with a marketable yield of roe were found where algal growth or encrusting organisms were most prolific. Good roe colours and high roe yields were not necessarily coincident. The data suggest an urchin fishery is likely to be impractical economically. In tank-based trials large E. esculentus were fed either commercially available salmon feed, a pelletised urchin diet or the macroalgae Laminaria saccharina. Urchins fed the artificial diets increased in test diameter during the 24-week experiment. At the end of the trial urchins fed salmon feed had a significantly higher gonad and alimentary index than those in the other treatments. E. esculentusis able to successfully exploit a diet rich in animal-origin oils. The diets also influenced gonad colour. The proportion of urchins with marketable gonad colours was highest (85%) in the treatment receiving salmon feed. As this species appears robust in culture and as artificial diets promote somatic and gonadal growth, an investigation into the practicalities of a fully farmed approach to gonad production may be worthwhile.  相似文献

A survey was carried out in Reunion island to obtain data on the occurrence of fungi, aflatoxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus, aflatoxins, total aerobic bacteria and salmonellae of 150 samples of mixed poultry feeds and raw materials. These were collected at five farms over a 3-month period during the warm rainy season.White corn and Brazilian soybean meal seemed to present a better microbiological quality than yellow corn and US soybean meal.Mixed poultry feeds presented a high total mold count reflecting the mold flora of raw materials. The most frequent and abundant fungi were Aspergillus flavus, A. glaucus group, Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., A. candidus, Mucor spp., A. restrictus, Scopulariopsis spp., Cladosporium spp. and A. versicolor. Of the 118 A. flavus strains screened, 42 (35.6%) were aflatoxigenic. Yellow corn samples were the most frequently contamined with aflatoxigenic strains (54.5%), followed by mixed feeds (44%).Of the 66 samples tested, 24 (36%) contained aflatoxins (traces to 22 ng/g). A good correlation seemed to exist between presence of at least one aflatoxigenic strain per sample and presence of aflatoxins.  相似文献

Trapa natansis an aquatic plant native to the Old World. In the late 1880s this plant was found to be naturalized in the eastern United States where it has become an important weed. To evaluate the potential of biological control to reduce this weed, surveys for natural enemies ofTrapaspp. were made in Northeast Asia and Europe. In addition, populations ofTrapa japonicain South Korea were monitored for one season to evaluate the occurrence and impact of insect natural enemies. Among the insects found, the leaf beetleGalerucella birmanicawas the most common and damaging species in Asia. It can cause complete defoliation of whole populations of plants. Nymphuline pyralid moths were also common and at times damaging. Both the beetle and the moths feed and develop on unrelated plants and so have no potential as biological control agents ofT. natansin North America. TwoNanophyesweevils were found in Asia which feed in petiole floats of the leaves. They are thought to be specific toTrapabut were not observed to be damaging. Low level populations of polyphagous Homoptera were common. Chironomid midges were also frequently associated with the plants, but for the most part were filter feeders, not herbivores. The greatest impact on the monitored plants in South Korea was by the leaf beetleG. birmanicawhich defoliated most of the plants, causing the mats of plants to sink. In Europe, a similar and related insect fauna was found, but none of the insects was very damaging to the plants. One Italian weevil,Bagous rufimanus,feeds within the fruit stems and might be more damaging at higher than observed population levels. Some diseases were seen on some plants in both regions. European populations ofT. natanshave declined significantly, stimulating conservation efforts. Literature records ofTrapainsects from warm areas are presented. These could be of interest ifT. natansspreads into warmer areas of North America.  相似文献

The effect of Anaplasma marginale antibodies ingested with the tick blood meal was tested on infected male ticks that were allowed to feed on cattle immunized with the erythrocytic stage of A. marginale. The experiments were done in two trials. Trial 1 was done using splenectomized calves (two calves per treated and control groups) while ticks in trial 2 were fed on intact yearling cattle (four cattle per treated and control groups). The cattle were immunized with purified outer membrane proteins of erythrocyte-derived A. marginale using saponin (trial 1) or monophosphoryl lipid-A-trehalose dicorynomycolate adjuvant (trial 2). The corresponding control cattle received adjuvant only. All cattle were challenged using Dermacentor andersoni males infected as adults that were allowed to feed for 7 days. In trial 1, the ticks were allowed to feed a second time on susceptible calves to test whether exposure of ticks to immunized cattle affected their ability to transmit anaplasmosis. Infections in fed ticks were monitored by determining the infection rates in salivary glands with an A. marginale-specific RNA probe and light microscopy. Vaccine-derived antibodies ingested with the tick blood meal did not appear to affect the development of A. marginale in previously infected ticks. The infection rates in the salivary glands were not significantly different among ticks fed on immunized versus adjuvant control cattle. When the vaccine-exposed ticks in trial 1 were allowed to feed a second time on susceptible calves, the resulting clinical symptoms of anaplasmosis were similar to those of the controls. There was no statistically significant effect of tick exposure to the anti-erythrocytic stage antibody on the development of salivary gland infection or transmission of A. marginale by ticks.  相似文献

【目的】茶尺蠖是茶园中的重要害虫。研究茶尺蠖寄主食物-肠道菌群-茶尺蠖生长发育三者之间的关系对于茶尺蠖的防治具有重要的理论指导价值。【方法】分析不添加茶叶因子的纯人工饲料和茶树鲜叶对茶尺蠖幼虫的存活影响;用高通量测序技术分析不同饲料饲喂的茶尺蠖幼虫的肠道菌群异同。【结果】取食人工饲料的幼虫死亡率远远高于取食茶树鲜叶的幼虫;取食人工饲料的幼虫肠道细菌多样性和丰富度高于取食茶树鲜叶的幼虫;茶尺蠖幼虫肠道中存在很多促进宿主生长的细菌。【结论】饲料类型影响茶尺蠖幼虫的存活;饲料类型影响茶尺蠖幼虫肠道菌群结构。  相似文献

BackgroundFumonisin B1 (FB1), fumonisin B2 (FB2), and overall mycotoxins feed contamination may cause several effects on crops production and animal health. The contamination occurred predominantly in corn and corn-based foods and feeds.AimsThis survey intends to provide the occurrence of fumonisins in swine and equine mixed feeds in Portugal, making an overview from 2007 to 2010.MethodsA total of 363 samples were analyzed, 258 from swine feed and 105 from horse feed with HPLC method. The detection limit was 50 μg/kg for FB1 and 100 μg/kg for FB2.ResultsThe overall results were 13% of FB1 occurrence from 2007 to 2010. FB1 was detected in about 17.0% of swine feed samples, being more frequent in 2010 (32.9%). In this year (2010) levels ranged between 66.7 and 3815.5 μg/kg.FB2 occurred only in 2010 in swine feed (6 samples, ranging between 104.0 to 467.2 μg/kg) and in horse feed (1 sample).ConclusionsThis represents an increase in occurrence through the analyzed years, but this may not be a threat to animal health, once the values were below the recommended guidance values from European Commission.  相似文献
