The meiofauna community (especially nematodes, oligochaetes and chironomids) in the streambed surface of two small submountain carbonate streams (Krähenbach and Körsch, Germany) was investigated from April 1998 to March 1999. The Krähenbach stream is relatively sorted and fine-grained, while the Körsch stream is more heterogeneous and coarse-grained. The streams also differ in velocity, water level, conductivity, chloride concentration and organic content of sediment. Total meiofauna density reached a maximum value of 906 individuals per 102 cm in the Krähenbach and 3166 individuals per 102 cm in the Körsch. Rotifers were the most abundant group in the Krähenbach (52% of total fauna), whereas nematodes were dominant in the Körsch (63%). Meiofauna showed one abundance peak in the Körsch and two abundance peaks in the Krähenbach. In the Krähenbach, distinct seasonal patterns at family and species level occurred, whereas in the Körsch even at high taxonomic level only one abundance peak was observed. The most abundant nematode family in both streams were Monhysteridae, followed by Tobrilidae in the Krähenbach and by Tylenchidae in the Körsch. The dominant oligochaete family in both streams were Naididae (especially Chaetogaster langi (Bretscher, 1896) and Nais elinguis (O. F. Müller, 1773)), followed by Tubificidae. The most abundant chironomid genera in the Krähenbach were Stichtochironomus and Corynoneura. Prodiamesa olivacea (Meigen, 1818) was the dominant chironomid species in the Körsch. Deposit-feeding and detritus-feeding animals were numerically dominant in both streams. The increased mean abundance of Diplogasteridae, Rhabditidae, Tubificidae and N. elinguis in the Körsch compared to that in the Krähenbach indicates an organically enriched situation.  相似文献

As a supporting component of the VALIMARproject, physicochemical investigations wereconducted monthly from 1995 to 1999 at theKrähenbach/Aich stream system (two samplingsites) and at the Körsch stream (sixsampling sites). Several physicochemicalparameters were analysed continuously bydataloggers during the entire sampling period. Moreover, a selection of the most importantmorphological parameters of the stream wererecorded in 1998.The results of these physicochemicalinvestigations demonstrated that theKrähenbach/Aich system could becharacterized as a natural rhithral submontanecarbonate stream system that is welloxygenated. Low temporal variations in pH,conductivity and chloride occurred at allsampling sites in the Krähenbach whichcoincided with the geological conditions atthis test stream. Because of relatively lowconcentrations of organic and inorganiccompounds during the entire study period thesites AB and AC in the Krähenbach/Aichsystem were classified as slightly polluted. The morphological assessment of the streamindicated a moderately affected status atboth of these streams.Physicochemical and morphologicalinvestigations along the Körsch streamsystem (KA to KE including the tributary streamSulzbach) indicated a highly affected rhithralsubmontane carbonate system characterized byhigh water velocity, flow rate and dissolvedoxygen. The Körsch, however, differssignificantly with respect to watertemperature, conductivity, pH, BOD5,nutrients, and chloride concentrations from theKrähenbach. As a result of differentanthropogenic inputs (e.g. several sewageplants, agriculture activities and waste waterdumping) the Körsch sites KA to KD wereclassified as critically to heavilypolluted. The morphological assessmentindicated a clearly affected to damagedstatus. The upstream site KE could becharacterized as slightly polluted and itsmorphological structure as moderatelyaffected.  相似文献

Isolated hepatocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to (1)native waters and acetone sediment extracts ofthe Krähenbach and the Körsch, twosmall streams in southwest Germanycharacterized by different levels of chemicalcontamination, as well as (2) differentconcentrations (1 ×, 10 ×, 50 ×) of anartificial mixture of 20 contaminants (PAHs,PCBs, pesticides) typical of the chemicalburden of the more heavily contaminatedKörsch. Following exposure for up to 3 d,hepatocytes were analyzed by means of electronmicroscopy and enzyme biochemistry to evaluatesublethal cytotoxic effects. Results documentthat dilutions of Krähenbach and Körschsurface water and sediment extracts inducemultiple time- and dose-dependent structuraland functional changes in hepatocytes. Betweenboth rivers as well as between free water phaseand sediment, significant differences in thetoxic burden could be detected. Consistently, however, both morphological and biochemicalresponses induced by samples from the moreseverely polluted river Körsch were morepronounced than those of the moderatelycontaminated river Krähenbach, whichindicates that the differential pollution ofthe two rivers directly translates into theextent of biochemical and morphological changesin hepatocytes. Cytopathological effectsincluded deformation of nuclear envelopes andincrease of heterochromatin, heterogeneity ofmitochondria, vesiculation of cisternae of therough endoplasmic reticulum, as well asproliferation of the smooth endoplasmicreticulum. Peroxisomal and lysosomalproliferation could be correlated tostimulation of the corresponding markerenzymes, catalase and acid phosphatase. In bothrivers, activities of lactate dehydrogenase andalanine aminotransferase as markers ofcytosolic glycolysis and protein metabolismwere increased indicating a general stimulationof cellular metabolism. Similar changes wereinduced by exposure to the artificial chemicalmixture resembling the chemical contaminationof the Körsch. Cytological changes inisolated hepatocytes thus not only serve todiscriminate between different levels ofcontamination of water, but may also help todifferentiate between pollution levels ofsediments.  相似文献

As a component of the VALIMAR project a comprehensive chemicalanalysis study was conducted in two small streams, the Körsch andthe Krähenbach, in southern Germany. The investigated pollutantswere heavy metals (HM), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs),polychlorinated biphenyl's (PCBs) and a set of 33 pesticides.Samples from stream water, sewage treatment plant effluents, stream sediment and fish were analyzed. In the stream water, HMand PAHs showed slightly higher concentrations in the Körsch thanin the Krähenbach, whereas the pesticide concentrations (mainlyplant protective agents) were significantly higher in the Körschthan in the Krähenbach. Because of their similar occurrence andconcentrations in the Körsch water and in the sewage treatmentplant effluent, it appears that most of the pesticides wereintroduced into the river via the sewage treatment plant. Only inthe cases of terbuthylazine, triallate, chlorfenvinfos, metazachlor and mecoprop were the occurrence and concentrationsin the Körsch higher suggesting that run-off was the mostimportant route for these five compounds in this stream. The sediments of the two streams clearly differed in terms ofpollutant concentration. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PCBsand HM were found in slightly higher concentrations in the Körschthan in the Krähenbach whereas pesticide concentrations weresignificantly higher in the Körsch. Results of each samplingdemonstrated extreme variations, due to frequent high-watersituations that led to high turnover and wash out of thesediment. In the sediment samples, most of the detected compoundswere more lipophilic than were those detected in water.Brown trout (Salmo trutta f. fario) and loach (Barbatulabarbatula) were sampled directly from the natural streams, from astream water fed bypass exposure system, and from a controlsystem in the laboratory. In the case of PAHs, PCBs andpesticides, concentrations were higher in fish exposed to theKörsch water than to the Krähenbach water. Heavy metals did notdifferentiate between the two streams. Polychlorinated biphenylsand pesticides showed higher concentrations in fish from thefield, which can be explained by longer exposure periods. Incontrast, PAHs showed the lowest concentrations under fieldconditions. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were possiblydisplaced by other compounds of high concentration. The pesticidepatterns in trout were quite similar in the different exposuretypes with primarily lindane, PCP and trifluraline contributingto these pattern changes. In loach, larger variations in allcontaminant concentrations were found but the same threecompounds also contributed most to the observed pattern changes. The analytical results were compared with various internationalobjective values for a good water quality as well as with valuesfrom other studies concerning the pollutant concentrations ofsediment and fish. All collected chemical data form a basis forthe biomarker investigations conducted by the other participantsof the VALIMAR project in order to find correlations betweenbiomarker responses and chemical pollution data of the twostreams.  相似文献

One of the major objectives of the VALIMAR project is to determine the ecological significance of various fish biomarker studies as indicators of chronic pollution in small streams in southwest Germany. Results of these fish biomarker investigations were compared to information from complementary studies on the meiobenthos, macrobenthos, and fish community studies to assess the ecological significance of these biomarker investigations. The main objective of this study was to provide biological assessments of the biomarker sites on the basis of the macrozoobenthos communities. Since no validated framework for the assessment of the biological integrity existed in Germany, two multimetric approaches were adapted to the whole stream system by investigating benthos and fish communities of 46 sites of varying degrees of human disturbance. Assessment of the communities was conducted in accordance with the European Community Water Framework Directive. Species distribution of benthos depended upon stream type and pollution status of streams. Biological attributes and bioindices of benthos communities, however, did not correlate with typological parameters like stream size or dominant substrate but correlated better with pollution parameters like conductivity or chloride concentration. Using a set of 18 measures, such as portion of sessile individuals, Rheoindex, oxygen availability index, and portion of pool dwellers, the benthos communities were characterized and evaluated. The composition of the fish communities was mainly determined by stream type, pollution and migration barriers. The influence of chemical parameters could be assessed by developing a“fish chemistry index”, which calculatesthe similarity of the present fish community with the potential natural community, but excludes those species strongly effected by deficits in stream channel morphology. Both fish chemistry index and benthic indices strongly correlated with pollution index parameters, clearly distinguishing between the more polluted Körsch sites and the less pollutedKrähenbach and Aich sites. Most of the single bioindices as well as overall assessment by multimetric indices indicated a gradient of decreasing quality from the reference stream Krähenbach to theslightly polluted Aich and Körsch upstream site (KE, upstream of all sewage treatment plants) and finally to the most polluted Körsch site directlybelow the most upstream sewage treatment plant (KD). According to the Water Framework Directive, the classification of ecological status of the benthos communities ranges from “high” (best of 5 classes) forthe reference stream to “bad” (5th class) for KD. Assessment of the fish community tends to score somewhat worse than the benthos due to deficits in morphological quality of the stream reaches. The benthos assessment and the newlydeveloped “fish chemistry index” correlated well with chemical water quality and hence with biomarkers, whereas ecological status of fish and overall ecological status was also influenced by river morphology. In conclusion all tested assessment methods on biocoenotic level are reliable indicators for the degree of human disturbance on small streams, whereas biomarkers are more suited for risk assessment and the investigation ofcause-effect-relationships.  相似文献

The presence of estrogenic substances in thewater of the small streams Körsch (Kö)and Krähenbach (Kr), Southwest Germany, wasdetermined by chemical and biological analysis.Because a large proportion of the Kö waternear its mouth consists of sewage treatmentplant (STPs) effluents, the impact of STPs onlevels of estrogens in surface water is anenvironmental issue of concern. In July 1996,water samples were taken from Kr and Kö(four sites) and tested in the E-Screen assaywith human MCF-7 breast cancer cells. AllKö samples induced estrogen-dependent cellproliferation resulting in 17-estradiolequivalent concentrations (EEQ) between 3.3 and9.7 ng/L while the Kr water showed no effect. In 1998/99 eight samples from Kö (near itsmouth) and nine samples from Kr were collectedand tested in the E-Screen after solid phaseextraction. Some estrogenicity was detectablein three Kr samples but Kö samples had amedian EEQ of 3.1 ng/L (range: 1.2–42 ng/L).GC/MS analysis revealed differences in thelevels of 17-estradiol and estronebetween the two streams. 17-estradiolwas detectable in five Kö samples only (0.7–1.8 ng/L). Estrone was found in the Köfrom 2.5 to 38 ng/L (median: 7.6 ng/L) and inthe Kr between 0.8 and 22 ng/L (median: 1.7 ng/L). Analysis for nine phenolic xenoestrogensrevealed rather low levels for five compoundswhich occurred more frequently and in higherconcentrations in the Kö. After asemi-field exposure of adult male rainbow troutfor 4 weeks in Kö water, plasmavitellogenin levels were significantly highercompared to those levels detected in the sameanimals before exposure.  相似文献

In order to assess the suitability ofalterations in activities of selected metabolicenzymes as biomarkers of chemicalcontamination, juvenile brown trout (Salmotrutta f. fario) and adult loach (Barbatula barbatula) were exposed to nativesurface waters from Krähenbach andKörsch, two differently polluted smallstreams in Southern Germany. As biomarkers ofexposure, a set of metabolic enzymes comprisinghexokinase, phosphofructokinase,glucose-6-P-dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, cytochrome c oxidase, succinate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase, alanine aminotransferase, esterase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, acidphosphatase as well as acetylcholinesterase(brain) were measured by means of establishedenzyme assays. In parallel studies, loach andbrown trout sampled from corresponding fieldsites were investigated to elucidate therepresentativeness of a stream bypass system.Although the episodic exposure scenarios ineither natural stream resulted in considerablevariability of enzyme activities, biochemicalchanges in both species allowed a cleardiscrimination between the two differentlypolluted streams. Similarities in changes ofenzyme activities between fish exposed in thebypass system and the field reached levels of63% and 73.1% in brown trout and loach, respectively. In conjunction with biomarkersfrom other studies, alterations in metabolicenzyme activities were able to serve as a toolfor the sensitive identification ofenvironmental pollutants, which in turn form fromthe basis for an improved understanding ofunderlying toxic processes and an interpretationof toxicant-related effects.  相似文献

Meiofauna composition, abundance, biomass, distribution and diversity were investigated for 31 stations in summer. The sampling covered the whole Oosterschelde and comparisons between the subtidal — intertidal and between the western-central — eastern compartment were made.Meiofauna had a community density ranging between 200 and 17 500 ind 10 cm–2, corresponding to a dry weight of 0.2 and 8.4 gm–2. Abundance ranged between 130 and 17 200 ind 10 cm–2 for nematodes and between 10 and 1600 ind 10 cm–2 for copepods. Dry weight biomass of these taxa was between 0.5–7.0 gm–2 and 0.008–0.3 gm–2 for nematodes and copepods respectively. The meiofauna was strongly dominated by the nematodes (36–99%), who's abundance, biomass and diversity were significantly higher intertidally than subtidally and significantly higher in the eastern part than in the western part. High numbers were positively correlated with the percentage silt and negatively with the median grain size of the sand fraction. The abundance and diversity of the copepods were highest in the subtidal, but their biomass showed an inverse trend being highest on the tidal flats. The taxa diversity of the meiofauna community and species diversity of both the nematodes and the copepods were higher in subtidal stations than on tidal flats. In the subtidal, the meiofauna and copepod diversity decreased from west to east, whereas nematode diversity increased. The vertical profile clearly reflected the sediment characteristics and could be explained by local hydrodynamic conditions.Seasonal variation was pronounced for the different taxa with peak abundance in spring, summer or autumn and minimum abundance in winter.Changes in tidal amplitude and current velocity enhanced by the storm-surge barrier will alter the meiofauna community structure. As a result meiofauna will become more important in terms of density and biomass, mainly due to increasing numbers of nematodes, increasing bioturbation, nutrient mineralisation and sustaining bacterial growth. A general decrease in meiofauna diversity is predicted. The number of copepods is expected to decrease and interstitial species will be replaced by epibenthic species, the latter being more important in terms of biomass and as food for the epibenthic macrofauna and fishes.  相似文献

In experimental mesocosms established at Solbergstrand, Oslofjord, Norway, organic enrichment was effected by the addition of powdered Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol., in quantities equivalent to 50gC·m?2 and 200gC·m?2, to boxes of sublittoral soft sediment. After 56 days, the structure of the meiofaunal communities in these treatments was compared with that of the control boxes. At this time the meiofaunal communites at each level of organic enrichment were markedly different from each other and from that in the control sediment. The responses of the two major components of the meiofauna, however, were different. Although the abundance of nematodes was slightly reduced in the high dose treatment this was not accompanied by detectable changes in community structure. Harpacticoid copepods, on the other hand, increased significantly in abundance in the treatment boxes and showed a general trend towards increased dominance and decreased diversity with increasing levels of organic enrichment, although in the low dose treatment there was also an increase in the number of species present. It is also shown that the nematode/copepod ratio is unreliable as a biomonitoring tool and it is suggested that the differential responses in community structure between the nematode and copepod components of the meiofauna might be a better indication of stress at the community level.  相似文献

A series of 10 samples from sediment in and adjacent to a shallow coastal iceberg scour at Signy Island, Antarctica, were taken by hand coring from 17 December 1993 until 23 August 1994. Scouring by the iceberg led to more than a 95% decrease in meiofaunal abundance and to a certain degree of reduction in diversity. Nematodes were always the most dominant group of meiofauna. The return of major meiofauna groups to control levels was accomplished in 30 days, although a decrease in abundance on the 50th day made interpretation difficult. The pioneering meiofaunal colonisers were copepods and ostracods, followed by nematodes. Microlaimus sp.1 was dominant among the nematodes throughout the whole period. Epistratum feeders and non-selective deposit feeders were highly dominant over selective deposit feeders and predators/omnivores. The Maturity Index, a measure for stress within nematode communities, was relatively low at all times and in controls, which indicates that r-strategists prevail in this community. In spite of the catastrophic destruction, nematode community structure was not affected by the iceberg impact, and there was no evidence of succession during recovery. This suggests that the nematode community in the shallow subtidal coast at Signy Island is well adapted to ice disturbance.  相似文献

The effects on newly fertilized eggs, embryos and larvae of zebrafish Danio rerio following exposure to sediment samples from the more heavily contaminated River Körsch, southern Germany, occurred earlier and were more prominent than in samples from the less contaminated Krähenbach. Dose- and time-related effects following exposure to Körsch sediment eluates and extracts included: (1) hatching failure and subsequent death of larvae exposed to undiluted aqueous sediment eluates and reduced hatching rates at sediment extract concentrations 0·0125%; (2) increased mortality after exposure to 25 and 50% dilutions of aqueous sediment eluates, and dilutions of 0·00625% sediment extracts; (3) reduction of heart beat frequency for 50% dilutions of sediment eluates and concentrations of 0·025% extracts; (4) increased frequency of heart and yolk sac oedema after exposure to 0·0125% sediment extracts. Since adverse effects of sediment extracts observed in zebrafish laboratory tests correlated with reproductive failure in natural populations of brown trout Salmo trutta f. fario in the severely polluted River Körsch, early life stages tests with zebrafish appear to be a suitable tool to assess the contamination rate of natural sediments.  相似文献

Submarine canyon systems provide a heterogeneous habitat for deep-sea benthos in terms of topography, hydrography, and the quality and quantity of organic matter present. Enhanced meiofauna densities as found in organically enriched canyon sediments suggest that nematodes, as the dominant metazoan meiobenthic taxon, may play an important role in the benthic food web of these sediments. Very little is known about the natural diets and trophic biology of deep-sea nematodes, but enrichment experiments can shed light on nematode feeding selectivity and trophic position. An in-situ pulse-chase experiment (Feedex) was performed in the Nazaré Canyon on the Portuguese margin in summer 2007 to study nematode feeding behaviour. 13C-labelled diatoms and bacteria were added to sediment cores which were then sampled over a 14-day period. There was differential uptake by the nematode community of the food sources provided, indicating selective feeding processes. 13C isotope results revealed that selective feeding was less pronounced at the surface, compared to the sediment subsurface. This was supported by a higher trophic diversity in surface sediments (Θ−1 = 3.50 ± 0.2) compared to the subsurface (2.78 ± 0.6), implying that more food items may be used by the nematode community at the sediment surface. Predatory and scavenging nematodes contributed relatively more to biomass than other feeding types and can be seen as key contributors to the nematode food web at the canyon site. Non-selective deposit feeding nematodes were the dominant trophic group in terms of abundance and contributed substantially to total nematode biomass. The high levels of ‘fresh’ (bioavailable) organic matter input and moderate hydrodynamic disturbance of the canyon environment lead to a more complex trophic structure in canyon nematode communities than that found on the open continental slope, and favours predator/scavengers and non-selective deposit feeders.  相似文献

Meiofauna communities of four intertidal sites, two sheltered and two more exposed, in Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) were investigated in summer 2001 at two different tidal levels (i.e. the low-water line and close below the driftline, referred to as mid-water (MW) level). A total of seven meiofaunal higher taxa were recorded with nematodes, oligochaetes and turbellarians being numerically dominant. Mean total meiofaunal densities ranged between 50 ind. 10 cm−2 and 903 ind. 10 cm−2. Our data showed a clear decrease in total meiofaunal densities with increasing coarseness of the sediment. Total meiofaunal biomass varied from 0.2 g dwt m−2 to 2 g dwt m−2 and, in general, was high even at low meiofaunal densities, i.e. larger interstitial spaces in coarser sediments supported larger meiofauna, especially turbellarians. The results on the vertical distribution of meiofauna contrasted sharply with typical meiobenthic depth profiles on other beaches, probably in response to ice-scouring and concomitant salinity fluctuations. Oligochaetes were the most abundant taxon, with a peak density of 641 ind. 10 cm−2 at Breoyane Island. They were mainly comprised of juvenile Enchytraeidae, which prohibited identification to species/genus level. Nematode densities ranged between 4 ind. 10 cm−2 and 327 ind. 10 cm−2. Nematodes were identified up to genus level and assigned to trophic guilds. In total, 28 nematode genera were identified. Oncholaimus and Theristus were the most abundant genera. The composition of the nematode community and a dominance of predators and deposit feeders were in agreement with results from other arctic and temperate beaches. Nematode genus diversity was higher at the more sheltered beaches than at the more exposed ones. Low-water level stations also tended to harbour a more diverse nematode communities than stations at the MW level. Differences in nematode community structure between low- and MW stations of single beaches were more pronounced than community differences between different beaches and were mainly related to resources quality and availability.  相似文献

In order to verify the principal suitability of gill ultrastructure as a biomarker, semi-field studies with two endigoneous fish, trout (Salmo trutta f. fario) and loach (Barbatula barbatula), were performed. The fish were exposed in flow-through systems to one heavily polluted (K?rsch) and one lightly polluted small stream (Kr?henbach) in South-West Germany. Ultrastructural responses in gills were correlated with limnological and chemical data recorded over a 2 year period in each stream. After 8 weeks of exposure to the heavily polluted stream, fish showed ultrastructural changes in the gills, such as cell proliferation, dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum, hyperplasia, hypersecretion, and epithelial lifting in chloride, epithelial, and mucus cells. The results of the study demonstrate that ultrastructural reactions in the gills of fish kept under semi-field conditions are potentially useful biomarkers indicating small stream pollution.  相似文献

Benthic sampling between 1997 and 2006 on the Yermak Plateau, a permanently ice-covered submarine peninsula northwest of Svalbard, exhibited regional differences with generally higher meiofauna numbers in southern and western parts (~2,250–2,300 ind. 10 cm−2 in the south-west, compared with ~1,200–1,350 ind. 10 cm−2 in the north-east). Distribution patterns suggest a current-driven lateral input of POM, produced in the high-productive Marginal Ice Zone, with increased intensity along the western slope of the plateau. Significant correlations between comparably ‘fresh’ sediment-bound phytodetritus and the taxonomic composition of meiofauna assemblages indicate that food quality decisively affects the community structure. The long-term development of meiobenthic communities showed no clear trend; however, a comparison of summer and winter data exhibited higher meiofauna densities and a more diverse composition in July samples. The predominance of small nematodes in the summer samples might point to reproductive activities stimulated by increased food availability. The taxonomic composition of nematode assemblages showed distinct regional differences, thereby indicating more stable environmental conditions in north-eastern parts of the Yermak Plateau.  相似文献

The impact of iceberg scouring on meiofauna communities, especially nematodes, was studied on the Kapp Norvegia shelf in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. Three stations with different stages of recolonisation following scour were selected on the basis of seafloor video images, sediment characteristics and faunal occurrences. These stations comprised a fresh scour, an older scour, and an undisturbed control site where a sponge spicule mat covered the sediment with dense epifauna. Meiofaunal abundance and taxonomic diversity of meiofauna groups were significantly reduced in the fresh scour. The highest abundance and diversity were found in the older scour as compared with the undisturbed site. The abundance and diversity of nematodes also decreased due to scouring. The abundance in the older scour recovered to the level of the undisturbed site whereas the diversity remained low. Scouring also changed the nematode community structure, with the suborders Desmoscolecina and Leptolaimina as the most sensitive groups. In addition, scouring resulted in the decrease of selective deposit feeders and the Maturity Index. The low diversity and the change in nematode generic composition in the older scour compared with the undisturbed site, despite the complete recovery in terms of abundance, suggest that the deep continental shelf nematode community in this area is sensitive to iceberg disturbance.  相似文献

Meiofauna are known to live on hard substrates in association with periphytic and epiphytic algae and attached epibiota; however, the abundance, diversity and colonizing abilities of hard-substrate meiofauna have been poorly documented. We quantified meiofauna living on microalgal-covered pilings associated with a wood pier in a shallow (<2 m deep) estuarine embayment with the use of a suction sampler, and compared colonization of pier-piling and sediment-dwelling meiofauna onto collectors that capture suspended meiofauna from the water column. Collectors were small mesh pads (159 cm3) suspended at mid-water depth, and their size and structural complexity were similar to floating or drifting masses of macroalgae that may be colonized by meiofauna. Sediment was collected by coring, and copepod (to species) and nematode (to genera) colonists on mesh pads were compared with pier-piling and sediment communities. Abundance of total meiofauna averaged 124±13.6 (S.E.) on pier pilings, compared to 2092±274.6 individuals 10 cm−2 in surrounding sediment. Phytal copepods (free-living copepods with prehensile first legs and dorsoventrally and laterally compressed body forms) and copepod nauplii dominated pier-piling collections, but nematodes were dominant on faunal collectors and in sediment. Phytal copepods also were abundant on faunal collectors but were rare in sediments. Copepod and nematode diversities were similar, but species composition was largely nonoverlapping, in pier pilings and sediments. Net recruitment of meiofauna to faunal collectors averaged about 900 individuals collector−1 day−1 during the 1-week experiment. Nematode and copepod colonists on faunal collectors were both much more similar to pier-piling than to sediment assemblages. These data suggest that meiofauna are abundant and diverse on algal-covered pier pilings, and they may become more important to marine ecology as artificial hard substrates increase with increasing urbanization. Furthermore, pier-piling meiofauna appear to readily migrate into the water column and probably contribute to a rapidly dispersing pool of meiofauna in estuaries.  相似文献

Estuarine meiofauna communities have been only recently considered to be good indicators of ecological quality, exhibiting several advantages over macrofauna, such as their small size, high abundance, rapid generation times and absence of a planktonic phase. In estuaries we must account not only for a great natural variability along the estuarine gradient (e.g. sediment type and dynamics, oxygen availability, temperature and flow speed) but also for the existence of anthropogenic pressures (e.g. high local population density, presence of harbors and dredging activities).Spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns of meiofauna and free-living marine nematodes were studied in the Mondego estuary (Portugal). Both taxonomic and functional approaches were applied to nematode communities in order to describe the community structure and to relate it with the environmental parameters along the estuary. At all sampling events, nematode assemblages reflected the estuarine gradient, and salinity and grain size composition were confirmed to be the main abiotic factors controlling the distribution of the assemblages. Moreover, the low temporal variability may indicate that natural variability is superimposed by the anthropogenic pressures present in some areas of the estuary. The characterization of both meiofauna and nematode assemblages highlighted the usefulness of the integration of both taxonomic and functional attributes, which must be taken into consideration when assessing the ecological status of estuaries.  相似文献

Meiofaunal nematodes and copepods disperse passively with sediment bedload, and copepods also display active emergence and reentry behavior. Epigrowth-feeders may be the nematode feeding group most susceptible to passive transport because they live closest to the sediment surface. We used bottom traps at a nematode-dominated intertidal mudflat in Maine, USA, to test the hypotheses that (1) meiofauna taxa disperse in relative proportions different from those of the ambient community; (2) copepods have the highest relative dispersal rate (number of individuals trap−1 day−1 ambient individual−1) and are not as tightly linked as other taxa to sediment flux; and (3) epigrowth-feeders have the highest nematode relative dispersal rate. Results supported all three hypotheses. Nematodes accounted for 95.8% of the individuals in cores, but only 38.9% of the individuals in traps. Copepods accounted for 1.5% of the individuals in cores, but 56.7% of the individuals in traps. Less common taxa also had different relative proportions in cores and traps, as did nematode feeding groups and individual species. The relative dispersal rate was far higher for copepods than for any other taxonomic group, and the absolute (number of individuals trap−1 day−1) and bulk (number of individuals g sediment−1 trap−1 day−1) dispersal rates for copepods were equal to those of the 65-fold more abundant nematodes and higher than those for all other taxa. The non-selective deposit-feeders were the most abundant nematode feeding group in the ambient community, but the epigrowth-feeders as a group and as individual species had the highest absolute, relative, and bulk dispersal rates. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) using analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) and species similarity percentages (SIMPER) reflected these differences between ambient and dispersing nematode assemblages. Significant positive regression relationships between sediment weight and the number of individuals captured in traps for nematodes and some other taxa indicated that they moved passively in the bedload. Lack of a significant regression relationship for copepods suggested an active behavioral component to dispersal. Meiofauna populations in this soft-bottom community were highly dynamic, demonstrating that the role of dispersal must be included in any consideration of the ecology of soft-bottom systems at local and regional spatial scales.  相似文献

A microcosm experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of different levels of paint-derived tributyltin (TBT), and different modes of exposure, on the diversity, feeding mode and assemblage structure of estuarine nematodes. Estuarine meiofauna were exposed to two types of treatments (mixture and deposit), containing uncontaminated sediment and sediment spiked with paint-derived TBT at 1 and 10 mg kg−1 for a duration of 4 and 8 weeks. In the mixture treatments, meiofauna assemblages were incubated in clean and contaminated sediments. In the deposit treatments meiofauna assemblages were exposed to the deposition of clean and contaminated sediments simulating the disposal of TBT-contaminated dredged material at sea. Effects of TBT on nematode species are likely to occur by (a) the uptake of leached TBT from the sediment pore water through their permeable cuticle, resulting in decreased diversity and increased changes in assemblage structure with increasing levels of TBT contamination, and (b) direct ingestion of paint-particles with food, resulting in a significant decline of nonselective deposit feeders in contaminated sediments. The numbers of many species differed greatly between mixture and deposit treatments. Results from multivariate analyses showed an immediate and dominant effect of burial on most nematode species in the deposit treatments compared to the longer-term effect of TBT contamination. The survival rates of nematode species in the top layer of these sediments depended on their ability to withstand TBT contamination as well as their potential to migrate, survive and reproduce in the deposit. This study unambiguously showed that the response of nematode species depended not only on the level of TBT contamination but also on the duration and mode of exposure to contaminated sediment, which should be taken into account when assessing the effects of TBT on aquatic communities.  相似文献
