News and Views
We surveyed the sleep‐wake patterns and lifestyle habits in a sample of Japanese first to third year junior high school children (n=638, age 12 to 15 yrs), of whom 29.3% were evening type, 64.1% intermediate type, and 6.6% morning type in preference. The morningness‐eveningness (M‐E) score was lower (more evening typed), 16.1 vs. 15.4 in first compared to third year students. There were significant gender differences, with girls showing a greater evening preference. Evening preference was associated with longer sleep latency, shortened sleep duration during schooldays and weekends, bad morning feeling, and episodes of daytime sleepiness. In contrast, morning preference was associated with higher sleep drive and better sleep‐wake parameters and lifestyle habits. Our results suggest the morning preference should be promoted among junior high school children to increase the likelihood of more regular sleep‐wake patterns and lifestyle habits.  相似文献

Introduction

The dynamic headspace sampling technique using thermal desorption, gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (TD‐GC/MS) is a powerful method for analysing plant emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and experiments performed in sterile and controlled conditions can be useful for VOC metabolism investigations.

Objective

The main purpose of this study was to set up a laboratory high‐throughput glass chamber for whole plant volatiles analysis. Brassica napus L. plantlets were tested with the developed system to better understand the relationship between low emission of induced terpene and cadmium (Cd)‐related abiotic stress.

Methodology

VOCs emitted by 28‐day‐old Brassica napus L. plantlets cultivated in vitro were trapped with our device using adsorbent cartridges that were desorbed with a thermal desorption unit before cryofocusing with a cooled injection system and programmable temperature vaporising inlet into an HP‐5 ms GC column. Terpene detection and quantitation from chromatogram profiles were acquired using selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode during full scan analysis and mass spectra were obtained with a quadrupole‐type mass spectrometer.

Results

The new trapping method produced reliable qualitative profiles of oilseed rape VOCs. Typical emissions of monoterpenes (myrcene, limonene) and sesquiterpenes (β‐elemene, (E,E)‐α‐farnesene) were found for the different concentrations tested. One‐way analysis of variance for quantitative results of (E,E)‐α‐farnesene emission rates showed a Cd concentration effect.

Conclusion

This inexpensive glass chamber has potential for wide application in laboratory sterile approach and replicated research. Moreover, the non‐invasive dynamic sampling technique could also be used to analyse volatiles under both abiotic and biotic stresses.  相似文献

Identification of host volatile compounds attractive to codling moth Cydia pomonella, a most important insect of apple, will contribute to the development of safe control techniques. Synthetic apple volatiles in two doses were tested for antennal and behavioural activity in codling moth. Female antennae strongly responded to (Z)3‐hexenol, (Z)3‐hexenyl benzoate, (Z)3‐hexenyl hexanoate, (±)‐linalool and E,Eα‐farnesene. Two other compounds eliciting a strong antennal response were the pear ester, ethyl (E,Z)‐2,4‐decadienoate, and its corresponding aldehyde, E,E‐2,4‐decadienal, which is a component of the larval defence secretion of the European apple sawfly. Attraction of codling moth to compounds eliciting a strong antennal response was tested in a wind tunnel. Male moths were best attracted to a blend of (E,E)‐α‐farnesene, (E)‐beta‐farnesene and ethyl (E,Z)‐2,4‐decadienoate. The aldehyde E,E‐2,4‐decadienal had an antagonistic effect when added to the above mixture.  相似文献

Summary Entrainment of the circadian rhythm in the pineal N-acetyltranferase activity by prolonged periods of light was studied in rats synchronized with a light:dark regime of 1212 h by observing phase-shifts in rhythm after delays in switching off the light in the evening or after bringing forward of the morning onset of light. When rats were subjected to delays in switching off the light of up to 10 h and then were released into darkness, phase-delays of the evening N-acetyltransferase rise during the same night corresponded roughly to delays in the light switch off. However, phasedelays of the morning decline were much smaller. After a delay in the evening switch off of 11 h, no N-acetyltransferase rhythm was found in the subsequent darkness. The evening N-acetyltransferase rise was phase-delayed by 6.2 h at most 1 day after delays. Phase-delays of the morning Nacetyltransferase decline were shorter than phasedelays of the N-acetyltransferase rise by only 0.7 h to 0.9 h at most. Hence, 1 day after delays in the evening switch off, the period of the high night N-acetyltransferase activity may be shortened only slightly. The N-acetyltransferase rhythm was abolished only after a 12 h delay in switching off the light.Rats were subjected to a bringing forward of the morning light onset and then were released into darkness 4 h before the usual switch off of light. In the following night, the morning N-acetyltransferase decline, but not the evening rise, was phase advanced considerably. Moreover, when the onset of light was brought forward to before midnight, the N-acetyltransferase rise was even phase-delayed. Hence, 1 day after bringing forward the morning onset of light, the period of the high night N-acetyltransferase activity may be drastically reduced. When rats were subjected to a 4 h light pulse around midnight and then released into darkness, the N-acetyltransferase rhythm in the next night was abolished. The data are discussed in terms of a two-component pacemaker controlling the N-acetyltransferase rhythm. It is suggested that delays in the evening switch off of light may disturb the N-acetyltransferase rhythm the next day only a little, as the morning component may adjust to phasedelays of the evening component almost within one cycle. On the other hand, bringing forward the morning onset of light may disturb the N-acetyltransferase rhythm heavily the next day, as the evening component not only does not adjust to phase-advances of the morning component, but it may even be phase-delayed when the light onset occurs before midnight.Abbreviations NAT N-acetyltransferase - PRC phase response curve - E evening component of the N-acetyltransferase rhythm or of its pacemaker - M morning component of the N-acetyltransferase rhythm or of its pacemaker - LD xy light dark cycle comprising x h of light and y h of darkness  相似文献

Plants respond to feeding by herbivorous insects by producing volatile organic chemicals, which mediate interactions between herbivores and plants. Yet, few studies investigated whether such plant responses to herbivory differ between historical host and novel plants. Here, we investigated whether herbivory by the pine weevil Hylobius abietis causes a release of volatile organic chemicals from a novel tree Pinus brutia and compared the relative amounts of volatiles released from herbivore's historical hosts and P. brutia. We collected volatiles emitted from P. brutia seedlings that were either subjected to feeding by H. abietis or no feeding. Our results indicated that feeding increased emission of volatile compounds, composed of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, and that the emission was several fold higher in the damaged seedlings than in undamaged seedlings. In particular, emission of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes increased by 4.4‐and 10‐fold in the damaged plants, respectively. Strikingly, individual monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes showed much greater dissimilarity between damaged and undamaged seedlings. Furthermore, several minor monoterpenes showed negative relationships with the weevil gnawed area. We discussed these results with the results of previous studies focused on historical host plants of H. abietis and hypothesized the ecological relevance and importance of our results pertaining relevance to the plant–herbivory interactions.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to examine the relationships between quadriceps torque, vastus lateralis pennation angle (θ), and patella tendon stiffness (K) at 07:45 and 17:45 h. Using short‐duration static contractions, simultaneous recordings were made of vastus lateralis (VL) electromyograph (EMG), θ and patella tendon K. Peak isometric extension torque (Peak torque Extcorr) increased by 29.4±6.5% at a knee angle of 70° (p=0.03) in the evening compared to the morning. In the contracted muscle, a 35.0±11.0% (p=0.02) time‐of‐day (TOD)‐related change in θ (to a greater evening compared to morning θ) was observed. Morning and evening measures of θ were also made, both at rest and at a standardized force level (250 N), to separate architecture change effects from increased torque capacity effects. Significant increments in θ in both the resting muscle (13.0±5.1%, p=0.046) and during the standardized exertions (8.0±3.1%, p=0.04) were observed in the evening versus the morning. Increases in θ with TOD were significantly correlated with the 40% (p=0.018) decrease in K both during the standardized contractions (r=0.788, p<0.001) and at rest (r=0.77, p=0.026). These data show that TOD affects K and θ and that these two important factors involved in in‐vivo muscle torque generation capacity are associated. The data also show that despite the potentially deleterious effects of the direction of the changes in both K and θ with TOD, peak torque Extcorr still shows a significant upward shift in the evening relative to the morning.  相似文献

Different methods (physiological, electrophysiological and biochemical) were used in order to show, during a 24 h period, a change in sensitivity of Bidens pilosus seedlings to the pricking of one of the cotyledons. The sensitivity is maximum in the morning and in the evening; it decreases during the light period (day) and the dark period (night). The minimum of the sensitivity occurs in the middle of the day and 3 to 4 h after the beginning of the night.  相似文献

Changes in rectal temperature during mild exercise in the middle of the rising (11:00 h) and falling (23:00 h) phases of the circadian rhythm of resting core temperature have been compared. Seven healthy males were studied at rest, while exercising on a cycle ergometer (60 min at 80 W), and during the first 30 min of recovery. Rectal temperature, forearm blood flow, and forearm sweat rate were measured at 1 min intervals throughout. During exercise, there were significant time‐of‐day differences in the profiles of all three variables, and in the thresholds for increases in forearm blood flow and sweating. Forearm blood flow and sweat rate were recruited more rapidly and to a greater extent with evening exercise, and rectal temperature rose less. Analysis of covariance, with rectal temperature as the covariate, indicated the associations between it and forearm blood flow or sweating were significantly different (p<0.05) between the two times of day. There were also significant (p<0.05) time‐of‐day effects for forearm blood flow and sweating that were independent of rectal temperature. During recovery, rectal temperature fell more quickly in the late evening than late morning. Forearm blood flow and sweating also showed time‐of‐day differences, but these did not co‐vary with rectal temperature. Control of rectal temperature during exercise and recovery appears to be more effective in the late evening than late morning, and differences in forearm blood flow and sweating, as well as factors independent of these two variables, contribute to this difference. The results support our “heat‐gain/heat‐loss modes” hypothesis.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of time‐of‐day on both maximal sprint power and repeated‐sprint ability (RSA). Nine volunteers (22±4 yrs) performed a RSA test both in the morning (07:00 to 09:00 h) and evening (17:00 to 19:00 h) on different days in a random order. The RSA cycle test consisted of five, 6 sec maximal sprints interspersed by 24 sec of passive recovery. Both blood lactate concentration and heart rate were higher in the evening than morning RSA (lactate values post exercise: 13±3 versus 11±3 mmol/L?1, p<0.05). The peak power developed during the first sprint was higher in the evening than morning (958±112 vs. 915±133 W, p<0.05), but this difference was not apparent in subsequent sprints, leading to a higher power decrement across the 5×6 sec test in the evening (11±2 vs. 7±3%, p<0.05). Both the total work during the RSA cycle test and the power developed during bouts 2 to 5 failed to be influenced by time‐of‐day. This suggests that the beneficial effect of time‐of‐day may be limited to a single expression of muscular power and fails to advantage performance during repeated sprints.  相似文献

Leaf and root essential oils of two closely related but ecologically distant Philodendron species were extracted in natural conditions in French Guiana and analysed by GC/MS to i) describe the blends of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by those species and ii) analyse species and environment‐based variations in extracts composition. A total of 135 VOCs were detected with a majority of aliphatic sesquiterpenes. P. fragrantissimum produced mainly β‐bisabolene (on average 29.12% of the extract) as well as α‐ and β‐selinene (14.52% and 17.50%, respectively) while in P. melinonii, four aliphatic sesquiterpenes could alternatively be the main component: (E)‐β‐farnesene (up to 91.42% of the extract), germacrene‐D (73.74%), β‐caryophyllene (51.63%) and transα‐bergamotene (41.26%). A significant effect of species and organs on extracts composition was observed while the environment (sun exposure) only affected the relative proportions of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in roots of Pmelinonii. These results are discussed in the light of the potential role of leaf and root terpenes in Philodendron species.  相似文献

Diversity of flower traits is often proposed as the outcome of selection exerted by pollinators. Positive directional pollinator‐mediated selection on floral size has been widely shown to reduce phenotypic variance. However, the underlying mechanism of maintaining within‐population floral color polymorphism is poorly understood. Divergent selection, mediated by different pollinators or by both mutualists and antagonists, may create and maintain such polymorphism, but it has rarely been shown to result from differential behavior of one pollinator. We tested whether different behaviors of the same pollinators in morning and evening are associated with dimorphic floral trait in Linum pubescens, a Mediterranean annual plant that exhibits variable within‐population frequencies of dark‐ and light‐colored flower tubes. Usia bicolor bee‐flies, the major pollinators of L. pubescens, are mostly feeding in the flower in the morning, while in the evening they are mostly visiting the flowers for mating. In 2 years of studying L. pubescens in a single large population in the Carmel, Israel, we found in one year that dark‐centered flowers received significantly higher fraction of visits in the morning. Fitness was positively affected by number of visits, but no fitness differences were found between tube‐color morphs, suggesting that both morphs have similar pollination success. Using mediation analysis, we found that flower size was under positive directional pollinator‐mediated selection in both years, but pollinator behavior did not explain entirely this selection, which was possibly mediated also by other agents, such as florivores or a‐biotic stresses. While most pollinator‐mediated selection studies show that flower size signals food reward, in L. pubescens, it may also signal for mating place, which may drive positive selection. While flower size found to be under pollinator‐mediated selection in L. pubescens, differential behavior of the pollinators in morning and evening did not seem to explain flower color polymorphism.  相似文献

The essential oil composition of the aerial parts of Artemisia magellanica Sch. Bip . (Asteraceae), native to Patagonia, was analyzed by GC‐FID‐MS. This is the first report on the essential oil composition of A. magellanica. A total of 113 components were identified accounting for 95.6–95.7 % of the oil. The essential oil was characterized by a high percentage of γ‐costol (21.0–43.5 %), selina‐4,11‐diene, (Z)‐β‐ocimene, (E)‐β‐farnesene, (Z)‐en‐yn‐dicycloether and 23 different esters (28.7 %). In turn, Artemisia biennis, a species native to North America, which is considered by some authors to be conspecific with A. magellanica, yielded an essential oil that was rich in (Z)‐β‐ocimene (34.7 %), (E)‐β‐farnesene (40.0 %) and the acetylenes (Z)‐ and (E)‐en‐yn‐dicycloethers (11.0 %). Thus, as A. biennis lacks the three main components present in A. magellanica, namely γ‐costol, 2‐methylbutyl 2‐methylbutyrate and selina‐4,11‐diene, these compounds could be considered as potential chemical markers for A. magellanica since they are absent or only found as minor constituents in other members of the genus. The data presented herein is also useful for genus taxonomy.  相似文献

This study analyzed diurnal variations in oxygen (O2) uptake kinetics and efficiency during a moderate cycle ergometer exercise. Fourteen physically active diurnally active male subjects (age 23±5 yrs) not specifically trained at cycling first completed a test to determine their ventilatory threshold (Tvent) and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max); one week later, they completed four bouts of testing in the morning and evening in a random order, each separated by at least 24 h. For each period of the day (07:00–08:30 h and 19:00–20:30 h), subjects performed two bouts. Each bout was composed of a 5 min cycling exercise at 45 W, followed after 5 min rest by a 10 min cycling exercise at 80% of the power output associated with Tvent. Gas exchanges were analyzed breath‐by‐breath and fitted using a mono‐exponential function. During moderate exercise, the time constant and amplitude of VO2 kinetics were significantly higher in the morning compared to the evening. The net efficiency increased from the morning to evening (17.3±4 vs. 20.5±2%; p<0.05), and the variability of cycling cadence was greater during the morning than evening (+34%; p<0.05). These findings suggest that VO2 responses are affected by the time of day and could be related to variability in muscle activity pattern.  相似文献

Phenotypic variation in heartwood and essential‐oil characters of Santalum austrocaledonicum was assessed across eleven populations on seven islands of Vanuatu. Trees differed significantly in their percentage heartwood cross‐sectional area and this varied independently of stem diameter. The concentrations of the four major essential‐oil constituents (α‐santalol, β‐santalol, (Z)‐β‐curcumen‐12‐ol, and cis‐nuciferol) of alcohol‐extracted heartwood exhibited at least tenfold and continuous tree‐to‐tree variation. Commercially important components α‐ and β‐santalol found in individual trees ranged from 0.8–47% and 0–24.1%, respectively, across all populations, and significant (P<0.05) differences for each were found between individual populations. The Erromango population was unique in that the mean concentrations of its monocyclic ((Z)‐β‐curcumen‐12‐ol and cis‐nuciferol) sesquiterpenes exceeded those of its bi‐ and tricyclic (α‐ and β‐santalol) sesquiterpenes. Heartwood colour varied between trees and spanned 65 colour categories, but no identifiable relationships were found between heartwood colour and α‐ and β‐santalol, although a weak relationship was evident between colour saturation and total oil concentration. These results indicate that the heartwood colour is not a reliable predictive trait for oil quality. The results of this study highlight the knowledge gaps in fundamental understanding of heartwood biology in Santalum genus. The intraspecific variation in heartwood cross‐sectional area, oil concentration, and oil quality traits is of considerable importance to the domestication of sandalwood and present opportunities for the development of highly superior S. austrocaledonicum cultivars that conform to the industry's International Standards used for S. album.  相似文献

Parasitoids use herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) to locate their hosts. However, there are few studies in soybean showing the mechanisms involved in the attraction of natural enemies to their hosts and prey. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. (Fabaceae) (cv. Dowling), that were induced after injury caused by Euschistus heros (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), on the searching behavior of the egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Four HIPVs from soybean, (E,E)‐α‐farnesene, methyl salicylate, (Z)‐3‐hexenyl acetate, and (E)‐2‐octen‐1‐ol, were selected, prepared from standards at various concentrations (10?6 to 10?1 m ), and tested individually and in combinations using a two‐choice olfactometer (type Y). Telenomus podisi displayed a preference only for (E,E)‐α‐farnesene at 10?5 m when tested individually and compared to hexane, but they did not respond to the other compounds tested individually at any concentration or when combinations of these compounds were tested. However, the parasitoids stayed longer in the olfactometer arm with the mixture of (E,E)‐α‐farnesene + methyl salicylate at 10?5 m than in the arm containing hexane. The results suggest that (E,E)‐α‐farnesene and methyl salicylate might help T. podisi to determine the presence of stink bugs on a plant. In addition, bioassays were conducted to compare (E,E)‐α‐farnesene vs. the volatiles emitted by undamaged and E. heros‐damaged plants, to evaluate whether (E,E)‐α‐farnesene was the main cue used by T. podisi or whether other minor compounds from the plants and/or the background might also be used to locate its host. The results suggest that minor volatile compounds from soybean plants or from its surroundings are involved in the host‐searching behavior of T. podisi.  相似文献

Plant terpene synthase genes (TPSs) have roles in diverse biological processes. Here, we report the functional characterization of one member of the soybean TPS gene family, which was designated GmAFS. Recombinant GmAFS produced in Escherichia coli catalysed the formation of a sesquiterpene (E,E)‐α‐farnesene. GmAFS is closely related to (E,E)‐α‐farnesene synthase gene from apple, both phylogenetically and structurally. GmAFS was further investigated for its biological role in defence against nematodes and insects. Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is the most important pathogen of soybean. The expression of GmAFS in a SCN‐resistant soybean was significantly induced by SCN infection compared with the control, whereas its expression in a SCN‐susceptible soybean was not changed by SCN infection. Transgenic hairy roots overexpressing GmAFS under the control of the CaMV 35S promoter were generated in an SCN‐susceptible soybean line. The transgenic lines showed significantly higher resistance to SCN, which indicates that GmAFS contributes to the resistance of soybean to SCN. In soybean leaves, the expression of GmAFS was found to be induced by Tetranychus urticae (two‐spotted spider mites). Exogenous application of methyl jasmonate to soybean plants also induced the expression of GmAFS in leaves. Using headspace collection combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, soybean plants that were infested with T. urticae were shown to emit a mixture of volatiles with (E,E)‐α‐farnesene as one of the most abundant constituents. In summary, this study showed that GmAFS has defence roles in both below‐ground and above‐ground organs of soybean against nematodes and insects, respectively.  相似文献

The indirect defences of plants are comprised of herbivore‐induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) that among other things attract the natural enemies of insects. However, the actual extent of the benefits of HIPV emissions in complex co‐evolved plant‐herbivore systems is only poorly understood. The observation that a few Quercus robur L. trees constantly tolerated (T‐oaks) infestation by a major pest of oaks (Tortrix viridana L.), compared with heavily defoliated trees (susceptible: S‐oaks), lead us to a combined biochemical and behavioural study. We used these evidently different phenotypes to analyse whether the resistance of T‐oaks to the herbivore was dependent on the amount and scent of HIPVs and/or differences in non‐volatile polyphenolic leaf constituents (as quercetin‐, kaempferol‐ and flavonol glycosides). In addition to non‐volatile metabolic differences, typically defensive HIPV emissions differed between S‐oaks and T‐oaks. Female moths were attracted by the blend of HIPVs from S‐oaks, showing significantly higher amounts of (E)‐4,8‐dimethyl‐1,3,7‐nonatriene (DMNT) and (E)‐β‐ocimene and avoid T‐oaks with relative high fraction of the sesquiterpenes α‐farnesene and germacrene D. Hence, the strategy of T‐oaks exhibiting directly herbivore‐repellent HIPV emissions instead of high emissions of predator‐attracting HIPVs of the S‐oaks appears to be the better mechanism for avoiding defoliation.  相似文献

Shade‐avoider plants typically respond to shade‐light signals by increasing the rate of stem growth. CONSTITTUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENESIS 1 (COP1) is an E3 ligase involved in the ubiquitin labelling of proteins targeted for degradation. In dark‐grown seedlings, COP1 accumulates in the nucleus and light exposure causes COP1 migration to the cytosol. Here, we show that in Arabidopsis thaliana, COP1 accumulates in the nucleus under natural or simulated shade, despite the presence of far‐red light. In plants grown under white light, the transfer to shade‐light conditions triggers an unexpectedly rapid re‐accumulation of COP1 in the nucleus. The partial simulation of shade by lowering either blue or red light levels (maintaining far‐red light) caused COP1 nuclear re‐accumulation. Hypocotyl growth of wild‐type seedlings is more sensitive to afternoon shade than to morning shade. A residual response to shade was observed in the cop1 mutant background, but these seedlings showed inverted sensitivity as they responded to morning shade and not to afternoon shade. COP1 overexpression exaggerated the wild‐type pattern by enhancing afternoon sensitivity and making morning shade inhibitory of growth. COP1 nuclear re‐accumulation also responded more strongly to afternoon shade than to morning shade. These results are consistent with a signalling role of COP1 in shade avoidance. We propose a function of COP1 in setting the daily patterns of sensitivity to shade in the fluctuating light environments of plant canopies.  相似文献

In the fly's visual system, the morphology of cells and the number of synapses change during the day. In the present study we show that in the first optic neuropil (lamina) of Drosophila melanogaster, a presynaptic active zone protein Bruchpilot (BRP) exhibits a circadian rhythm in abundance. In day/night (or light/dark, LD) conditions the level of BRP increases two times, in the morning and in the evening. The same pattern of changes in the BRP level was detected in whole brain homogenates, thus indicating that the majority of synapses in the brain peaks twice during the day. However, these two peaks in BRP abundance, measured as the fluorescence intensity of immunolabeling, seem to be regulated differently. The peak in the morning is predominantly regulated by light and involves the transduction pathway in the retina photoreceptors. This peak is present neither in wild‐type Canton‐S flies in constant darkness (DD), nor in norpA7 phototransduction mutant in LD. However, it also depends on the clock gene per, because it is abolished in the per0 arrhythmic mutant. In turn, the peak of BRP in the evening is endogenously regulated by an input from the pacemaker located in the brain. This peak is present in Canton‐S flies in DD, as well as in the norpA7 mutant in LD, but is absent in per01, tim,01 and cry01 mutants in LD. In addition both peaks seem to depend on clock gene‐expressing photoreceptors and glial cells of the visual system. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Develop Neurobiol, 2013  相似文献
