As recent experiments demonstrated that protozoans support reproductionof the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus only in the presenceof algal prey, we addressed the question of minimal algal foodrequirements in a mixed diet of algae and protozoans to ensurepositive growth of B. calyciflorus. In numerical response experiments,we determined the algal threshold concentration for zero populationgrowth of B. calyciflorus when feeding on a pure algal dietof Monoraphidium minutum, and on a mixed diet of M. minutumplus the ciliate Coleps sp. Under pure algal and under mixedfood conditions, a minimum amount of 0.3 µg carbon (C)ml-1 M. minutum was needed to ensure zero population growthof B. calyciflorus. At lower algal concentrations, Coleps sp.was of low nutritional value. However, when offered in conjunctionwith a concentration of 0.8 µg C ml-1 M. minutum, Colepssp. contributed equally to the reproductive success of B. calyciflorusas compared to a sole M. minutum diet. Overall, Coleps sp. canbe an adequate supplement in the diet of B. calyciflorus ifa sufficient amount of algal prey is available. However, attimes of low phytoplankton biomass, consumption of ciliatesdoes not necessarily confer a reproductive advantage for thisrotifer.  相似文献

1. We investigated the potential competition and feeding impact of the common rotifer species, Keratella cochlearis and K. quadrata , on the abundant prostomatid ciliates, Urotricha furcata and Balanion planctonicum, in laboratory batch culture experiments. All four species have similar feeding preferences, co-occur in many freshwater environments, and are thus potential competitors for the same algal food.
2. Two small Cryptomonas species served as food for the ciliates and the rotifers in the experiments. Growth rates of each ciliate species were measured when they grew alone and when they were paired with one of the rotifer species.
3. Both rotifer species reduced the growth rate of U. furcata , probably primarily by direct feeding on the ciliates. Growth rate of B. planctonicum was unaffected by K. cochlearis , but was drastically reduced by grazing and/or mechanical interference of K. quadrata .
4. These results suggest niche partitioning of the sympatric ciliates with respect to their rotifer competitors/predators.  相似文献

Freshwater tidal estuaries comprise the most upstream reaches of estuaries and are often characterised by the presence of dense bacterial and algal populations which provide a large food source for bacterivorous and algivorous protists. In 1996, the protistan community in the freshwater tidal reaches of the Schelde estuary was monitored to evaluate whether these high food levels are reflected in a similarly high heterotrophic protistan biomass. Protistan distribution patterns were compared to those of metazoan zooplankton to evaluate the possible role of top-down regulation of protists by metazoans. Apart from the algivorous sarcodine Asterocaelum, which reached high densities in summer, heterotrophic protistan biomass was dominated by ciliates and, second in importance, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNAN). HNAN abundance was low (annual average 2490 cells ml–1) and did not display large seasonal variation. It is hypothesised that HNAN were top-down controlled by oligotrich ciliates throughout the year and by rotifers in summer. Ciliate abundance was generally relatively high (annual average 65 cells ml–1) and peaked in winter (maximum 450 cells ml–1). The decline of ciliate populations in summer was ascribed to grazing by rotifers, which developed dense populations in that season. In winter, ciliate populations were probably regulated `internally' by carnivorous ciliates (haptorids and Suctoria). Our observations suggest that, in this type of productive ecosystems, the microbial food web is mainly top-down controlled rather than regulated by food availability.  相似文献

The biochemical factors that determine the food quality of protistsfor rotifers are poorly understood. We evaluated populationgrowth rates and egg production of the rotifer Keratella quadratafed with four protist species growing on either an algal ora bacterial diet. The cryptomonad Cryptomonas phaseolus, consideredas a good quality prey, and assays without prey served as controls.Population growth rates and egg numbers of K. quadrata werecorrelated with single biochemical compounds (fatty acids, aminoacids and sterols) of the protists. Feeding on the alga C. phaseolusor the algivorous ciliates resulted in enhanced population growthrates and high egg production by K. quadrata, whereas feedingon bacterivores supported only moderate egg production but nopopulation growth. The rotifers’ egg production was correlatedwith the protist biochemical composition, including polyunsaturatedfatty acids (PUFAs), the sterol desmosterol, ergosterol, stigmastanoland the amino acid leucine. No significant relationships wereobserved between population growth rates of the rotifers andthe protists’ biochemistry, suggesting that populationgrowth and reproduction of K. quadrata may have different nutritionalrequirements. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studiesto analyze a large variety of biochemical compounds to determinethe food quality of protists for a zooplankton predator andthe first study to analyze the biochemical quality of protiststo a rotifer species.  相似文献

Abstract Predation rates of flagellate and ciliate protozoa on the bacterioplankton of Butrón River (Spain) were determined from FLB (fluorescently labelled bacteria) uptake rates. Bacterial and ciliate protozoa counts were higher when higher water temperature was recorded. Flagellate counts did not show this pattern, which suggested predation of flagellates by other organisms, or some other different nutritional mode besides phagotrophy. Average individual ciliate predation rates were up to 40-times higher than those of flagellates. These results were compared with similar data obtained from other authors in several aquatic systems. However, the population predation rates of flagellate protozoa were on average 6-times higher than that of ciliate protozoa, due to the low population numbers of the latter. Thus, flagellate protozoa can be considered as more important bacterial consumers than ciliates in this aquatic system.  相似文献

Algivorous ciliates represent an important link in freshwater food webs, as they transfer energy and biochemical matter from their algal prey to mesozooplankton predators. However, it is still unknown how dietary composition influences the biochemical composition of ciliates. We analyzed the sterol composition of the algivorous ciliates Balanion planctonicum and Urotricha farcta and compared it to the sterol composition of their diet—the cryptomonad Cryptomonas phaseolus. The sterol composition of the ciliates did not resemble that of their algal diet. Ergosterol [(22E)-ergosta-5,7,22-trien-3β-ol] was the sterol in highest concentration in C. phaseolus, whereas stigmasterol [(24S)-24-ethylcholesta-5,22E-dien-3β-ol] was dominant in both B. planctonicum and U. farcta. Moreover, the occasionally higher sterol concentrations in the ciliates than in their algal diet suggest sterol accumulation by the ciliates. We conclude that dietary sterol composition influences the composition of the two algivorous ciliates studied, but species-specific differences in metabolism probably determine the ultimate sterol composition of the ciliates.  相似文献

1. Large mixotrophic ciliates ( Stentor araucanus , S. amethystinus and Ophrydium naumanni ) were a characteristic component of a temperate, oligotrophic lake in North Patagonia. During a 1-year study, the abundance, biomass and primary production of these large Chlorella -bearing ciliates were compared with those of the total plankton community.
2. Mixotrophic ciliates peaked in spring and from late summer to autumn, accounting for 1.6–43% (annual average: 16.3%) and 67–99% (annual average: 92%) of total ciliate abundance and biomass, respectively. Their contribution to total zooplankton biomass, including flagellates, rotifers, ciliates and crustaceans, was 14–76%, or 47% as an annual average. Endosymbiotic algae accounted for up to 25% of total autotrophic biomass (annual mean: 3.9%).
3. Maximum cell-specific photosynthetic rates of S. araucanus and S. amethystinus at light saturation varied between 80 and 4400 pg C ciliate–1 h–1 with high values during autumn and winter, and low values during summer. The depth-integrated rates of photosynthesis (0–40 m) of algal endosymbionts contributed 1–25% to total photosynthesis (annual mean: 6.5%).
4. A comparison of calculated ingestion rates with photosynthetic rates of Stentor indicates that photosynthate produced by endosymbionts generally exceeded heterotrophic food supply of Stentor during autumn and winter, but was much lower during summer, when food supply was high.
5. The mixotrophic ciliates represent an important 'link' between nanoplankton and higher trophic levels within the plankton community because of their high heterotrophic biomass and considerable contribution to total photosynthesis.  相似文献

Seasonal and depth variations of the abundance, biomass, and bacterivory of protozoa (heterotrophic and mixotrophic flagellates and ciliates) were determined during thermal stratification in an oligomesotrophic lake (Lake Pavin, France). Maximal densities of heterotrophic flagellates (1.9 × 103 cells ml–1) and ciliates (6.1 cells ml–1) were found in the metalimnion. Pigmented flagellates dominated the flagellate biomass in the euphotic zone. Community composition of ciliated protists varied greatly with depth, and both the abundance and biomass of ciliates was dominated by oligotrichs. Heterotrophic flagellates dominated grazing, accounting for 84% of total protistan bacterivory. Maximal grazing impact of heterotrophic flagellates was 18.9 × 106 bacteria 1–1h–1. On average, 62% of nonpigmented flagellates were found to ingest particles. Ciliates and mixotrophic flagellates averaged 13% and 3% of protistan bacterivory, respectively. Attached protozoa (ciliates and flagellates) were found to colonize the diatom Asterionella formosa. Attached bacterivores had higher ingestion rates than free bacterivorous protozoa and may account for 66% of total protozoa bacterivory. The microstratification of the metalimnetic community in Lake Cisó was followed through the diel cycle by means of a fine sampler with syringes spaced at 3 cm intervals. Populations were sharply stratified. The uppermost part of the metalimnion was occupied by the rotifer Anuraeopsis fissa. Next, layers of the ciliate Coleps hirtus and the flagellate Cryptomonas phaseolus were found. Finally, purple sulfur bacteria appeared at the bottom part of the metalimnion. Although in lower abundances, characteristic populations of ciliates were found at each depth: Strombidium inhabited zones with oxygen, while Plagiopyla and Metopus lived at depths with sulfide. Several members of the community moved vertically about 20 cm during the diel cycle. Cryptomonas performed larger vertical migrations of 40 cm. This organism concentrated at the upper metalimnion during the day, and dispersed through the lower metalimnion during the night. At night, Cryptomonas lived in an environment without oxygen and with sulfide concentrations up to 0.6 mM.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The relationship between population growth rates and the concentrations of several algal species was determined in laboratory experiments with the rotifers Brachionus rubens and B. calyciflorus .
2. The effects of food quantity were well described by a modified Monod model with a threshold for zero population growth. The model parameters depended on particle size and nutritional quality of the food algae. Differences between the rotifer species were significant and reflected their varying food-size preferences.
3. For each rotifer species, thresholds were lowest for algae in the most readily ingested size range. The lowest thresholds were 0.07–0.09 mgC 1−1 with algae of about 5 μm equivalent spherical diameter (ESD) for B. rubens , and 0.19 mgC 1−1 with algae of about 10 μm ESD for B. calyciflorus .
4. Maximal growth rates ( r max) were slightly below 0.8 day−1 for both rotifers with most algal species. The highest r max values for both rotifers were observed when Cyclotella meneghiniana was provided as food. With this alga, B. calyciflorus had a significantly higher rmax (1.02 day−1) than B. rubens (0.838 day−1).
5. From a comparison of the relationship between growth rates and ingestion rates, Chlamydomonas reinhardii appeared to be of low nutritional quality for B. rubens .
6. Egg ratios were related to growth rate and were not influenced by the algal food used. Egg development times and average mortality rates were estimated from the relationship between egg ratio and growth rate. B. calyciflorus appeared to have a high average mortality rate (0.383 day−1) compared to B. rubens (0.083 day−1).  相似文献

Temporal variations in the microbial community structure of plankton, which is composed of autotrophic and heterotrophic pico-, nano- and microplankton, were investigated during the austral summer of 2005/2006 under fast ice near Syowa Station, eastern Antarctica. Autotrophic algal populations were composed almost entirely of diatoms followed by phytoflagellates such as autotrophic dinoflagellates and cryptophytes. Among the microbial community, heterotrophic biomass was dominated by heterotrophic dinoflagellates and naked ciliates and finally exceeded autotrophic biomass. Qualitative microscopic analysis revealed that heterotrophic dinoflagellates were ingesting large number of diatoms. Synchronizing fluctuation of naked ciliates with phytoflagellates suggested a predator–prey relationship between them. Our results suggest that the pelagic food webs under the extensive ice-covered areas in coastal Antarctic regions are not short but complex.  相似文献

The abundance and biomass of heterotrophic flagellates were estimated monthly in sediments of Botany Bay during March 1999-February 2000. The annual abundance and biomass were in the ranges of 0.46-4.70 x 10(5) cells/cm(3) and of 0.30-8.61 micro g C/cm(3), respectively. The majority of heterotrophic flagellates (93-100%) were less than 10 mm in length and few flagellates were larger than 10 mm. Of the total microbial carbon biomass, heterotrophic flagellates made up about 5% (but at times up to 35%). The contribution of heterotrophic flagellates varied from month to month, and among the sites. The abundance of heterotrophic flagellates was negatively correlated with sediment grain size and positively correlated with the abundance of bacteria, algae (autotrophic flagellates and diatoms), and their probable grazers. A best subsets regression analysis showed that bacterial and algal abundance are the most important factors controlling the abundance of heterotrophic flagellates. When the previously reported grazing rates on bacteria were applied, heterotrophic flagellates would consume a maximum of 64% of bacterial standing stock daily in Botany Bay, suggesting that heterotrophic flagellates are important as bacterivores. However, the importance of heterotrophic flagellate grazing probably varies significantly among the sites and from month to month.  相似文献

The impact of Daphnia longispina (Cladocera) on the plankton food web was studied in a polyhumic lake where this species comprised almost all zooplankton biomass. Plastic enclosures (volume 7 m3) were inserted into the lake retaining the initial water stratification except that in one enclosure zooplankton was removed. After the removal of Daphniaa rotifer, Keratella cochlearis, ciliates and heterotrophic nanoflagellates increased markedly and the density and biomass of bacteria decreased. Edible algal species, Cryptomonas rostratiformisand three small chrysophytes,Ochromonas, Pedinella and Spinifermonas, took advantage of the removal of Daphnia, while more grazing-resistant species declined. In spite of the changes in the species composition of phytoplankton, the removal of Daphnia did not affect the biomass, primary production or respiration of plankton. The results implied that the density of heterotrophic flagellates and ciliates was controlled by Daphnia, but in its absence the former took its role as the bacterial grazers.  相似文献

1. This study focused on heterotrophic microorganisms in the two main basins (north and south) of Lake Tanganyika during dry and wet seasons in 2002. Bacteria (81% cocci) were abundant (2.28–5.30 × 106 cells mL?1). During the dry season, in the south basin, bacterial biomass reached a maximum of 2.27 g C m?2 and phytoplankton biomass was 3.75 g C m?2 (integrated over a water column of 100 m). 2. Protozoan abundance was constituted of 99% of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF). Communities of flagellates and bacteria consisted of very small but numerous cells. Flagellates were often the main planktonic compartment, with a biomass of 3.42–4.43 g C m?2. Flagellate biomass was in the same range and often higher than the total autotrophic biomass (1.60–4.72 g C m?2). 3. Total autotrophic carbon was partly sustained by the endosymbiotic zoochlorellae Strombidium. These ciliates were present only in the euphotic zone and usually contributed most of the biomass of ciliates. 4. Total heterotrophic ciliate biomass ranged between 0.35 and 0.44 g C m?2. In 2002, heterotrophic microorganisms consisting of bacteria, flagellates and ciliates represented a large fraction of plankton. These results support the hypothesis that the microbial food web contributes to the high productivity of Lake Tanganyika. 5. As the sole source of carbon in the pelagic zone of this large lake is phytoplankton production, planktonic heterotrophs ultimately depend on autochthonous organic carbon, most probably dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from algal excretion.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the flux of biomass through the communities of bacteria and phagotrophic protists in the cold and warm conditions occurring seasonally in Butrón River. Bacterial and heterotrophic protistan (flagellate and ciliate) abundance was determined by epifluorescence direct counts; protistan grazing on planktonic bacteria was measured from fluorescently labeled bacteria uptake rates; and the estimate of bacterial secondary production was obtained from [3H]thymidine incorporation rates. The abundance of bacterial, flagellate, and ciliate communities was similar during cold and warm situations. However, we observed that estimates of dynamic parameters, i.e., secondary bacterial production and protistan grazing, in both situations were noticeably different. In the warm situation, grazing rates of flagellates and ciliates (bacteria per protist per hour) were, respectively, 7 times and 18 times higher than those determined in the cold situation, and the grazing rates of the protistan communities (bacteria per protists present in 1 ml of water per hour) increased up to 5 times in the case of flagellates and 42 times in the case of ciliates. Estimates of bacterial secondary production were also higher during the warm situation, showing a ninefold increase. The percentage of bacterial production preyed upon by flagellates or ciliates was not significantly different between the two conditions. These results showed that in the different conditions of a system, the flux of biomass between the trophic levels may be quite different although this process may not be reflected in the abundance of each community of bacteria, flagellates, and ciliates. A leptomonad flagellate found in the macronucleus of the hypotrichous ciliate Paraholosticha sterkii carries out its whole life cycle there. The ciliates can divide, encyst, and excyst even when parasitized, and the flagellates are maintained throughout. Parasite-free ciliates may be rapidly infected. Ciliates with endosymbiotic algae (green ciliates) have oftenbeen found to be more viable than aposymbiotic (without endosymbionts)counterparts during periods of starvation. However, the possiblebenefit of algal endosymbionts to the growth of ciliate hostshas rarely been quantified. Growth coordination between hostand symbionts is essential to maintain the symbiosis, but themechanism behind this is also uncertain. Our hypothesis is thatthe growth rate of the symbionts is always close to its maximum,irrespective of the nutritional status of the host. To testthis hypothesis we built a model based on a constant symbiontgrowth rate, and performed an experiment where we observed thegrowth rate of aposymbiotic and green Coleps cells under differentlight conditions and food concentrations. The results were ingood agreement with the model, and showed that at low food concentrationthe growth rate of green Coleps was clearly higher than thatof aposymbiotic Coleps, while there were no significant differenceswhen food was abundant. Our results indicate that algal grossgrowth rate is always close to maximum, and that growth coordinationbetween host and symbiont is obtained by a variable degree ofleakage of photosynthetic products from the symbionts to theciliate host.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of ice organisms was investigated in Fram Strait in May 1988 during the ARK V/1 expedition on RV Polarstern. Over a 3 week period the abundances of bacteria, diatoms, auto- and heterotrophic flagellates as well as various groups of meiofauna organisms were observed in the lowermost 30 cm of an ice floe. Data were obtained from three experimental fields under three different light regimes as a result of manipulations of the snow cover. The application of multivariate factor analysis on this time series data set resulted in the characterization of four succession stages of an Arctic sea ice community: 1) the diatom bottom assemblage, 2) the mixed autotrophic assemblage, 3) the mixed auto- and heterotrophic supra-bottom assemblage, and 4) the heterotrophic supra-bottom assemblage. The two most abundant meiofauna groups (Turbellaria, Ciliata) showed different preferences according to algal distribution. While turbellarians were most abundant in samples with mixed populations of diatoms and flagellates, ciliates reached their abundance maxima in samples dominated by diatoms, suggesting different prey selections. We have developed a model for the explanation of the spatial separation of auto- and heterotrophic organisms, highlighting the possible role of DOC production by ice algae and DOC transport with brine flow.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The planktonic ciliate communities of eleven organically coloured north and central Florida lakes representing a variety of trophic conditions were examined during 1979–80. The total abundance and biomass of ciliates were not significantly different from comparable clearwater lakes and only minor taxonomic replacements were noted at the order level.
2. Timing of population peaks of oligotrophic lakes was dissimilar to clearwater lakes of the same trophic state, but seasonality in meso-trophic and eutrophic lakes resembled patterns described for comparable clearwater lakes.
3. Various ciliate components were strongly correlated with chlorophyll a concentrations, but only moderately correlated to dominant phytoplankton groups. No significant correlations were found between ciliate components and bacterial abundance.
4. Myxotrophic taxa numerically dominated oligotrophic systems, particularly during midsummer, and accounted for a large percentage of the total ciliate biomass. Estimates of the ciliate contribution to total autotrophic biomass indicate that these zoochlorellae-bearing protozoa may account for much of the autotrophic biomass during midsummer periods in coloured lakes, and thus may lead to an overestimation of phytoplankton standing crops available to zooplankton grazers if chlorophyll a is used as a surrogate measure of algal biomass.  相似文献

The locomotory response to cell surface compounds extracted from two prey species,Vibrio natriegens andVibrio neries, was tested for a bacterivorous ciliate,Pseudochnilembus marinus Thompson 1966. Chemoattraction of the ciliate to the surface compounds stabilized in agarose baits was not equal for the two prey species. Fractionation of the extracts suggested the attractive substance was a high molecular weight compound. The expression of the differential response was dependant on the physiological condition and prior prey species exposure of the ciliate test population. The recognition and response to material normally found on the surface of prey cells supports evidence for the involvement of chemical sensing of gradients of prey particles and dissolved compounds of prey origin in the natural swimming behavior of bacterivorous ciliates. The prey species-specific reactions and influence of ciliate physiological state on chemosensory response suggest ciliate-bacteria interactions may be more complex than preciously assumed.  相似文献
