Trypanoxyuris microon is a pinworm that infects New World nonhuman primates, including Aotus nancymae. Although it typically is clinically insignificant, infection may serve as a significant variable during experimental data analysis. In this study we sought to determine the most effective anthelmintic therapy for eradication of T. microon infection in A. nancymae. Animals confirmed to be infected with T. microon by perianal tape test were treated twice (on days 0 and 14) with pyrantel pamoate, ivermectin, or thiabendazole and evaluated for eggs by daily perianal tape test throughout the entire 28-d period. Successful clearance of eggs was defined as 5 consecutive negative perianal tape tests. Pyrantel pamoate and ivermectin were significantly more effective at egg clearance than were thiabendazole and no treatment. Overall, 100% of the pyrantel pamoate and ivermectin treatment groups were cleared of infection after 2 treatments, whereas only 60% of the thiabendazole group became negative for pinworm eggs. In addition, the time after treatment until clearance was 1 to 2 d for pyrantel pamoate, 2 to 4 d for thiabendazole, and 4 to 6.5 d for ivermectin. These results indicate that pyrantel pamoate was the most effective and rapidly acting anthelmintic for the treatment of adult T. microon infection, with ivermectin as a suitable alternative. However because of the potential for continued development of immature stages or reinfection, anthelmintic doses should be repeated after 1 to 2 wk, in combination with effective environmental sanitation.  相似文献

Little information is available on the response of vervet monkeys to different housing conditions or on the suitability of enrichment devices or methods for vervet monkeys. In this study, the authors evaluated the occurrence of stereotyped behavior in adult vervet monkeys under various conditions of housing and enrichment. The variables included cage size, cage level (upper or lower), enrichment with a foraging log, enrichment with an exercise cage and presence of a mate. The authors first determined the incidence of stereotyped behavior in captive-bred, singly housed adult female and male vervet monkeys. They then exposed monkeys to different housing and enrichment situations and compared the incidence of stereotyped behavior among the monkeys. The authors found that more females than males engaged in stereotyped behavior and that females, on average, engaged in such behavior for longer periods of time than males. Stereotyped behavior was most often associated with a small, single cage. The average amount of observed stereotyped activity in monkeys housed in a small cage was significantly lower when the monkeys had access to either a foraging log or an exercise cage. Stereotyped behavior was also lower in female monkeys that were housed (either with a male or without a male) in a larger cage. The least amount of abnormal behavior was associated with the largest, most complex and enriched housing situation. Males and females housed in cages on the lower level of two-level housing engaged in more stereotyped behavior than did monkeys housed in the upper level, regardless of the presence or type of enrichment provided.  相似文献

The present studies assessed the extent to which heterosexual pairmates could buffer marmosets (Wied's black tufted-ear marmoset,Callithrix kuhli)against stress. Six male and six female marmosets from established groups were exposed to two experimental manipulations together with a control condition. Each condition lasted a total of 4 days. For the two experimental conditions, animals were removed from the family group and housed in a novel cage for 48 h in either the presence or the absence of the heterosexual pairmate. During the 48-h novel-cage housing period and for 48 h upon reunion of the subjects with the family group, concentrations of urinary cortisol were measured in the first void sample of the day and behavioral observations were conducted. When animals were housed alone in a novel cage they exhibited significant elevations in levels of urinary cortisol after 24 and 48 h of novel-cage exposure. In contrast, when marmosets were housed in the novel cage in the presence of the pairmate, levels of urinary cortisol did not change across the 4-day period. The presence of the social partner also reduced the behavioral manifestations of exposure to novelty. Upon reunion with the family group, animals that had been housed in the novel cage alone spent significantly more time in close proximity to the pairmate than animals that had been housed with the partner. A second experiment was conducted to determine the effect that separation from the pairmate, only (independent of any effects of novelty), had on levels of cortisol. Concentrations of urinary cortisol were measured in subjects housed in the familiar home cage, but in the absence of the pairmate, over a 48-h period and compared to concentrations of excreted cortisol immediately prior to separation. Separation from the pairmate did not elevate cortisol levels when the subject was housed in the home cage, suggesting that elevated cortisol levels in animals housed alone in the novel cage were in response to novelty exposure rather than to separation from the pairmate. Since the physical presence of the heterosexual partner reduced the physiological and behavioral effects of novel-cage housing, social attachments might function as homeostatic regulators of HPA function in marmosets.  相似文献

The daily total sleep time (TST) of the only nocturnal simian primate, Aotus spp., remains little studied under controlled conditions. We conducted 3 experiments in 4 owl monkeys (Aotus sp.), aged 1–27+ yr, to determine the daily TST. We housed 3 their—a nuclear family—in 1 cage and the remaining senescent female in an adjacent separate cage. We monitored their activity-sleep pattern longitudinally for 15–20 d via actigraphy: by tagging an acclerometer-type miniature transmitter (Actiwatch-MINIMITTER) sensitive to omnidirectional movement, to the owl monkey's neck. The TST (9.5–12.5 h) was ca. 4.5–7 h less than the 17 h Perachio reported for owl monkeys in 1971 by polysomnography, under similar 12-h-light; 12-h dark conditions. Our finding corroborates well with the TST for other nonhuman primates. Four members of the Aotus colony at our facility reached 20 yr in captivity; the oldest (wild-born female) is still living at >27 yr, and the second oldest (captive-born male), is 23 years now.  相似文献

A once-daily dosage regimen has been recently recommended in the use of aminoglycoside antibiotics since they induce a postantibiotic effect. In choosing this regimen, one must determine the most appropriate time of day for administration of the drug. We investigated the effects of the timing of amikacin (AMK) administration on the kinetics, the efficacy against intraperitoneal infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the toxicity of AMK in mice with and without immijnosuppression. We found circadian variations in the kinetics, efficacy, and toxicity of the drug in mice. Male and female ICR mice, which were housed under a light-dark (12:12 h) cycle with free food and water intake, were injected subcutaneously with AMK sulfate 50 mg/kg body wt. There was a circadian variation in AMK clearance for both sexes with the maximum value in the dark phase and the minimum in the light phase after a single administration. When AMK 500 mg/kg/day was repeatedly administered once daily for 30 days, higher toxicity was demonstrated in mice injected with the drug at the time of day with lower AMK clearance, although no difference was demonstrated in the toxicity between the two time points with different AMK clearance when AMK 1,500 mg/kg was administered in a single dose. The ED50 of AMK to cure the infected mice in the midlight phase (13:00 h) with lower clearance was significantly lower than that in the middark phase (01:00 h) with higher clearance. In contrast, the ED50 in the early light phase (09:00 h) was significantly lower than that in the early dark phase (21:00 h), although AMK clearance was not different between these two different time points. In mice premedicated with cyclophosphamide to suppress immune functions, the difference in the ED50 of AMK was still demonstrated between 13:00 and 01:00 h, but not between 09:00 and 21:00 h. The present study shows not only that there were circadian variations in both AMK clearance and toxicity after repeated administration, but also that there was a circadian variation in the efficacy of AMK in mice infected with P. aeruginosa. These results suggest that the timing of drug administration should be considered in pharmacotherapy with AMK and that the most appropriate time of administration in mice and nocturnal animals may be in the midlight (resting) phase. They also suggest that the ED50 of AMK. against P. aeniginosa infection may be influenced not only by the circadian variation in pharmacokinetics but also by the variations in immune systems suppressed by cyclophosphamide.  相似文献

Hepatozoon infections of Sciurus carolinensis were investigated by a 30-month capture/recapture trapping programme. Details of trapping methods, squirrel husbandry and blood sampling techniques are discussed.
Hepatozoon gametocytes infected blood monocytes and could be detected in blood smears or by concentration of leucocytes. From blood smears, 71% (154/218) of the squirrels were infected. Prevalence appeared to be influenced by host hormonal and breeding patterns. Significantly more adult males than adult females were infected (P<0.025). Infections were significantly more prevalent in adults overall and in adult males than in juvenile males (P< 0.001 in both cases), but not significantly different between female adults and juveniles (P>0.05). Prevalence rates were generally higher: (i) in summer and winter, when animals mate, compared to spring and autumn; and (ii) in 1984 than in 1983, possibly relating to differences of squirrel breeding success and juvenile recruitment in the two years. Parasitaemias were overdispersed in the sampled host population and significantly lower in females (38%) than in males (48%) (P<0.05), although there was no significant difference between the age classes. Animals, either recaptured or laboratory-maintained, showed chronic fluctuating parasitaemias with no obvious pattern. Squirrels with overt parasitaemias showed trophozoites and schizogonic stages of Hepatozoon in the lung and rarely in liver and spleen. Three out of 16 animals with no obvious parasitaemias had lung tissue stages of the parasite. Results suggest that Hepatozoon is more prevalent in grey squirrel populations than blood smears suggest.  相似文献

The strength and specificity of attraction between mated pairs of red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus) were tested in the laboratory. Test individuals were placed in a choice situation in which they could indicate their preference, by proximity and quality of behavior measures, to either their pair mate in an adjoining cage or an alternative in a second adjoining cage (same-sex animal, opposite-sex animal, or an empty cage). The test animals showed a significant preference to be in visual contact and proximity with their pair mates instead of the alternative when it was an animal of the same sex as the test individual or an empty cage. However, when the choice was between their pair mate and an animal of the opposite sex, no preference for their pair mate was apparent. No sex differences were found. It is concluded that attraction to a pair mate is not sufficient to maintain a pair bond, and when pairs ofS. labiatus breed monogamously, the pair relationship is likely to be maintained, at least in part, through aggression between same-sex individuals.  相似文献

Performing stressful procedures in view of cage mates may cause stress in observer animals. However, it is not known if stressful procedures performed in close proximity to, but not in view of cage mates are stressful for the (observer) cage mates. Radiotelemetry and postmortem in vitro studies of the vas deferens were used to determine the effects of stress on observers. Heart rate (HR) and core body temperature (cBT) were recorded for 1 h following weighing of a cage mate or 1 h during restraint of a cage mate and the hour following return of the restrained mouse to the cage. This procedure was repeated daily for 15 days. HR and cBT were increased in observers during both restraint and weighing of cage mates. Analysis of the area under the curve showed that HR and cBT in observers were significantly higher during restraint of a cage mate than after weighing of a cage mate. When mice were returned to the cage after weighing or restraint, HR and cBT were significantly higher in the cage mates of restrained animals. Comparison between days 1, 3, 7 and 14 found that, as the experiment progressed, HR and cBT were significantly reduced in the observer mice during the hour following return of the cage mates after restraint. Results from previous studies have shown that chronic stress causes the vas deferens to become hypersensitive to exogenous application of noradrenaline (NAd). In this study, vas deferens from observers of restraint had a significantly increased response to NAd. These results indicate that stressful procedures should be conducted in isolation from other mice.  相似文献

Determining appropriate feeding regimes has important welfare implications for captive primates. This study examined the preference of food bowl heights in 6 pairs of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) housed in a 2-tier cage system. Given that marmosets are arboreal and spend most of their time in the upper half of their cages, we predicted that the marmosets would prefer a food bowl positioned at the top of the cage over one positioned at the bottom. We further predicted that this would be more apparent for the marmosets housed in lower tier than upper tier cages. Given a choice regarding where to feed, marmosets did prefer the top bowl to the bottom bowl; however, when only 1 food bowl was presented, its position had no significant effect on the marmosets' feeding behavior. In addition, contrary to the prediction, there were few differences in the marmosets' feeding behavior in the upper and lower tier cages. Feeding the marmosets in a bowl at the bottom of their cage did not result in greater cage use. On the basis of this study, we recommend positioning captive marmosets' food bowls high in the cage.  相似文献

Physical cage enrichment—exercise devices for rodents in the laboratory—often includes running wheels. This study compared responses of mice in enriched physical and social conditions and in standard social conditions to wheel running, individual housing, and open-field test. The study divided into 6 groups, 48 female BALB/c mice group housed in enriched and standard conditions. On alternate days, the study exposed 2 groups to individual running wheel cages. It intermittently separated from their cage mates and housed individually 2 groups with no running wheels; 2 control groups remained in enriched or standard condition cages. There were no significant differences between enriched and standard group housed mice in alternate days' wheel running. Over time, enriched, group housed mice ran less. Both groups responded similarly to individual housing. In open-field test, mice exposed to individual housing without running wheel moved more and faster than wheel running and home cage control mice. They have lower body weights than group housed and wheel running mice. Intermittent withdrawal of individual housing affects the animals more than other commodities. 2009年9~12月以4只大猩猩(Gorilla gorilla)为研究对象,应用瞬时扫描取样法观察记录其活动行为,建立不同取样间隔与数据准确性和数据独立性的线性回归方程,计算变量系数和常数项的95%置信区间,进而确定瞬时扫描法的最适取样间隔。研究结果表明,大猩猩活动主要集中于上午10:00~11:00时和下午14:00~15:00时(χ2=19.110,df=4,P=0.001),不同大猩猩个体间活动行为存在显著差异(Kruskal Wallis Test,χ2=11.229,df=3,P=0.011)。随着取样间隔的增大,间隔取样与连续取样数据的相关系数呈下降趋势,满足数据准确性需求的最适取样间隔为3~13 min,随取样间隔的增大,数据独立可能性逐渐升高,其中满足数据独立性需求的最适取样间隔为2~8 min。综合考虑以上两种因素,确定针对大猩猩活动行为的瞬时扫描取样的最适间隔为3~8 min。  相似文献

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of cage size and cage enrichment. Golden hamsters were individually housed in standard cages of four different sizes and in enriched cages of three different sizes since 3 weeks of age. Each of the seven housing groups consisted of 12 hamsters. After 14 weeks of housing in their respective environments the measurements started. The mean baseline rectal temperature was significantly higher in hamsters housed in small cages than in hamsters housed in large cages. After the injection of fever-inducing lipopolysaccharide rectal temperature increased by 1 to 2 degrees C. The increase of rectal temperature and the fever index were the highest in animals housed in large cages and the smallest in animals housed in small cages. Through cage enrichment and increasing cage size the mean febrile response increased while the mean baseline rectal temperature decreased. Cage size and cage enrichment had no effect on the dispersion of the measured values. The differences in microclimate between large and small cages were too small to have an effect on thermoregulation. The results indicate that housing in small cages induce chronic stress which obviously affects thermoregulation. The findings demonstrate that the results of some physiological experiments are significantly influenced by the pre-experimental housing conditions.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate whether an immunoglobulin (Ig)G avidity ELISA can be used to differentiate between acute and persistent infection with Salmonella (S.) Dublin in cattle. To determine whether the IgG isotype, IgG(1) and IgG(2) responses in acute and persistent infections differ. METHODS AND RESULTS: Animals were selected from two herds with long-term infection (years) and two herds recently infected (<3 months). Forty-seven animals were categorized into groups based on the persistence of their antibody level in milk. Based on titre from two serial dilutions the avidity index (AI) was calculated for IgG (IgG-AI), IgG(1) (IgG(1)-AI) and IgG(2) (IgG(2)-AI). The mean IgG-AI for suspected carrier animals with either persistently high (group 1) or persistently high to medium high (group 2) antibody levels was significantly (P = 0.003) higher (32.1% and 38.4%) than for acutely infected animals (21.7% and 22.3%). The probability of being a suspect carrier was associated with IgG-AI, antibody level in the sample and age. However, the effect of age could be the result of a biased sample selection. Specificities and sensitivities were calculated at a range of cut-off values for IgG-AI and IgG(1)-AI. Overall, IgG(2)-AI was high compared with IgG(1)-AI, and there was no difference in IgG(2)-AI between infection groups. There was no difference in the ratio IgG(2):IgG(1) for acute and persistent infection groups. CONCLUSIONS: Assuming that a persistently high antibody response is indicative of persistent infection with S. Dublin in cattle, it can be concluded that the IgG-AI can aid in differentiating between acute and long-term infection on herd level. However, for the test to be useful as an alternative tool to repeated sampling over time for detection of persistently infected carriers during control strategies in cattle herds, the test needs to be optimized and studied further in a larger sample of well-characterized infections in cattle. The affinity of IgG(2) is higher than IgG(1) early in the S. Dublin infection. There appears to be no difference in the IgG(2)-AI between the acute and chronic infection stages. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: For decades the strategies for detection of persistently infected cattle in S. Dublin infected herds have involved repeated bacteriological culture of faecal samples or repeated antibody measurements over several months. Both methods are time consuming and costly, leaving a new method for detection of carrier animals based on a single sampling highly desirable. This study illustrates a tool, IgG-AI, which may prove useful, although more validation of the method is required before it is used in practice.  相似文献

A spray administration of ivermectin was evaluated for the treatment of pinworm infection in mice. In this study, a spray of 0.1% ivermectin injectable solution over the entire cage once a week, for three consecutive weeks (one cycle treatment), was effective in eradicating both Syphacia obvelata and Aspiculuris tetraptera from mice under experimental conditions. In addition, no acute toxicity was observed in 105 mothers or 687 neonates treated with ivermectin, indicating that ivermectin does not affect murine reproduction. Finally, we attempted to eradicate pinworms from infected mice in our institute using this method. Two cycles of treatment were administered, with a two-week pause between cycles, resulting in complete eradication for at least one year. Treating mouse colonies with spray ivermectin is inexpensive, safe, requires very little labor and is very effective at eradicating pinworms from mice.  相似文献

Captive animals are often provided with cage enrichments in order to improve their welfare. Swimming water is an often-discussed requirement for farmed mink. The present study aimed to give insight into the value of swimming water for farmed mink by measuring anticipatory and stereotypical behaviour in subjects raised and housed in the presence and absence of swimming water and in subjects that were deprived of swimming water.The major findings of the present experiments are that: (1) there was no significant difference in anticipatory behaviour between subjects reared and housed in the presence or absence of swimming water; nor was there a significant difference in anticipatory behaviour after removing the water for 2.5 weeks, (2) there was no significant difference in stereotypical behaviour in winter in the presence, absence and after 2.5 months deprivation of swimming water, and finally, (3) there was no significant correlation between anticipatory activity and stereotypical behaviour.The results suggest that mink might not experience consequences, in the sense of increased reward-sensitivity or stereotypy levels, due to the absence of swimming water if they never experienced this incentive before, and that swimming water and an empty bath, such as used in this experiment, might be equally valued incentives for mink.  相似文献

The effectiveness of showing videotapes to captive chimpanzees as an environmental enrichment was quantitatively tested. The responses of 10 subjects (3 adult males and 7 adult females) to videotapes of chimpanzees engaging in a variety of behaviors, to videotapes of other animals and humans, and to television programs were compared. Data collection consisted of 20-minute, continuous sampling tests while various videotapes were shown. A total of 400 tests were conducted. Multivariate analysis of variance was applied to measure differences in the duration of eight categories of behavior across videotapes of varying content. No general behavioral differences in response to the tapes based on sex or housing were revealed. However, with the behavior of monitor-watching analyzed alone, we found that individually housed subjects watched the videotapes more than socially housed subjects. When viewing time was averaged across all videotapes, the chimpanzees watched the monitor a mean of 38.4% of the time available. The chimpanzees' behavior varied significantly only when they were watching the videotapes of various human and chimpanzee activities and not when watching a blank screen. A Pearson's correlation indicated that subjects habituated to repeated presentations of the videotapes, although the effect was small numerically. Although this type of enrichment did not extensively alter behavior, it did occupy a significant portion of the subjects' activity budget; thus, the amount of time spent watching the video stimuli indicated that videotapes may be a useful enrichment for captive chimpanzees. In 1981, an outbreak of herpetic disease developed in a colony of DeBrazza's monkeys (Cercopithecus neglectus). In seven of eight infected animals, clinical signs of infection included vesicular and ulcerative lesions on the lips, tongue, and/or palate. Histologic examination of lesions revealed intranuclear inclusion bodies, and electron microscopy revealed nucleocapsids and virions with typical herpesvirus morphology. Although a virus was isolated that appeared similar to monkey B virus, techniques available at the time did not allow precise identification of the virus. Analysis of serum from one surviving monkey collected 12 years after the outbreak revealed a pattern of reactivity characteristic of B virus-positive serum on the basis of results of ELISA and western immunoblot analysis. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of archived paraffin-embedded tissue specimens and molecular analysis of the one viral isolate obtained from a DeBrazza's monkey indicated that the virus responsible for the outbreak was a new genotype of B virus. Testing of sera from lion-tailed macaques (Macaca silenus) housed in an adjacent cage at the same zoo indicated that these animals harbored this virus and, thus, were the likely source of the virus that infected the DeBrazza's monkeys. This study documents usefulness of archiving samples from disease outbreaks for later analysis. In addition, this incident underscores the importance of considering herpes B virus infection when outbreaks of disease having characteristics of herpetic infections develop in nonhuman primates kept at institutions that also house macaques.  相似文献
