Objective: Measurement of waist circumference alone as a proxy of abdominal fat mass has been suggested as a simple clinical alternative to BMI for detecting adults with possible health risks due to obesity. Research Methods and Procedures: From 1993 to 1997, 27, 178 men and 29, 875 women, born in Denmark, 50 to 64 years of age, were recruited in the Danish prospective study Diet, Cancer and Health. By the end of the year 2000, 1465 deaths had occurred. We evaluated the relationship between waist circumference and BMI (simultaneously included in the model) and all‐cause mortality. We used Cox regression models to estimate the mortality‐rate ratios and to consider possible confounding from smoking. Results: Waist circumference among both men and women showed a strong dose‐response type of relationship with mortality when adjusted for BMI, whereas the low range of BMI was inversely associated with mortality when adjusted for waist circumference. A 10% larger waist circumference corresponded to a 1.48 (95% confidence interval: 1.36 to 1.61) times higher mortality over the whole range of waist circumference. The associations were independent of age and time since baseline examination. Restriction to never smokers showed a similar pattern, but a weakening of the associations. Discussion: Despite the high correlation between waist circumference and BMI, the combination may be very relevant in clinical practice because waist circumference for given BMI was a strong predictor of all‐cause mortality. The inverse association between BMI and mortality for given waist circumference was diminished in never smokers, particularly for high values of BMI.  相似文献

Abstract Relationships between seed mass and several aspects of plant regeneration ecology were investigated in a post‐fire environment in Ku‐ring‐gai Chase National Park near Sydney, Australia. We found a significant positive relationship between seed mass and time to seedling emergence (P < 0.001) and a strong negative relationship between seed mass and time between emergence and production of the first true leaf (P < 0.001). Surprisingly, we found no relationship between seed mass and seedling establishment (P = 0.21). It seems most likely that this lack of relationship is a result of the many stochastic factors affecting seedling establishment during any given recruitment episode at any given site. A cause of mortality was assigned to 56% of the 781 seedlings that died during the present study. There was no relationship between cause of death and seed mass (P = 0.28). Of the seedlings for which the cause of death was known, 57% were killed by herbivory and 21% were killed by drought. Seedling–seedling competition affected only one species.  相似文献

A microphotometric method is introduced that allows measurement of the contraction-relaxation kinetics of Spirostomum in response to electrical stimulation. The time course of contraction includes a rapidly contracting phase of some 4–5 mS during which cells shorten at a rate in excess of 100 cell lengths sec?1. While a stimulus strength-duration curve determines the threshold of the response, the response to above threshold stimuli of different strengths and to trains of stimuli suggest that contraction of Spirostomum may not be an all-or-none event. The kinetics of relaxation following high stimulating voltages and repetitive after contractions also induced by high voltages are explained by excitation-contraction coupling through a stimulus-dependent intermediate effector, possibly the release of calcium ions. Changes in resting membrane potential detected by intracellular recording do not influence the initiation of contraction, while microinjection of calcium buffers above 10?5 M Ca2+ invariably induces contraction.  相似文献

The relationships between habitat variables and population densities of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou), rosyface dace (Leuciscus ezoe), Siberian stone loach (Noemacheilus barbatulus) and wrinklehead sculpin (Cottus nozawae) were examined by data collected at 55 reaches in forest and grassland streams in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Regression analysis suggested that salmon and dace densities were affected by water temperature (negative for salmon, positive for dace) and structural habitat factors (woody debris for salmon, pools for dace). Salmon density was higher in forest reaches than in grassland reaches, whereas dace density was higher in grassland reaches, suggesting that the removal of riparian forest had raised water temperature and allowed upstream invasions by dace. In contrast to salmon and dace, neither the density of loach nor sculpin differed between the forest and grassland reaches. For their densities, a negative effect of each on the other was most important, suggesting a strong effect of interspecific competition between loach and sculpin on their distributions. However, regression models also suggested that substrate heterogeneity mediated the outcome of their interspecific competition. On the basis of the results, a scenario is predicted for a fish-assemblage change with a typical land-development process in Hokkaido, and the importance of leaving or restoring riparian buffer for conservation and restoration of stream habitat is emphasized.  相似文献

Limited germplasm and narrow genetic base in the past has hinders wider applicability of Stylosanthes in India. However, build up in Stylosanthes germplasm in recent years provided an opportunity to evaluate and use them under different agro-ecological situations preferably targeting drought tolerance. Rate reducing resistance (RRR) allo-tetraploid lines of S. scabra and diploid S. seabrana, a newly introduced species, observed well suited in hard and cracking soils under complete rainfed condition. Genotypes of S. scabra were more tolerant to drought over lines of other species as evidenced by high leaf thickness, more proline accumulation, contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), sugars, starch and chlorophyll and low carbon isotope discrimination (CID) values. Both in control and stress conditions, a positive relationship (r = 0.465 and 0.328) was observed between specific leaf area (SLA) and CID. Earlier reports have emphasized measurement of CID as an indirect way of measuring the transpiration efficiency (TE) in Stylosanthes (Thumma et al. Aust J Agr Res 49:1039–1045, 1998). The negative relationship observed between TE and CID suggested low CID bearing lines would have high TE, useful traits to select lines growing better in dry environments. Thus, selected lines having low CID provided better scope for the introduction of this important range legume for semi- arid regions of India.  相似文献

Integration (interaction among parts of an entity) is suggested to be necessary for individuality (contra, Metaphysics and the Origin of Species). A synchronic species is an integrated individual that can evolve as a unified whole; a diachronic lineage is a non-integrated historical entity that cannot evolve. Synchronic species and diachronic lineages are consequently suggested to be ontologically distinct entities, rather than alternative perspectives of the same underlying entity (contra Baum (1998), Syst. Biol. 47, 641–653; de Queiroz (1995), Endless Forms: Species and Speciation, pp. 57–75; Genes, Categories and Species). Species concepts usually refer to either one or the other entity; for instance, the Biological Species Concept refers to synchronic species, whereas the Cladistic Species Concept refers to diachronic lineages. The debate over species concepts has often failed to recognise this distinction, resulting in invalid comparisons between definitions that attempt to delineate fundamentally different entities. A wide range of fluorogenic and naphthol esters has been tested as substrates for mouse esterases. New esterases have been identified in liver and kidney extracts with palmityl, oleyl, and elaidyl esters. From substrate, inhibition, and molecular weight studies, three homologies between human and mouse esterases are suggested. Testosterone is commonly thought to drive male sexual interest, but little experimental evidence demonstrates a direct relationship between natural variation in testosterone and sexual interest in healthy young men. This study measured young men's testosterone levels and their interest in visual sexual stimuli across three test sessions within 1 month. Fifteen men aged 23–28 viewed pictures of couples engaged in sexually explicit activity. Each session included a unique set of 72 pictures depicting heterosexual oral sex or intercourse presented in randomized order. Participants controlled how long they viewed each picture, with viewing time indicating sexual interest. Men's testosterone (T) levels were assayed from blood spots obtained prior to viewing the pictures. Overall, T and viewing time were positively correlated; however, the strength of this relationship varied by test session. T was marginally correlated with viewing time during the first session (r = 0.43) and not significantly correlated with viewing time on the second session (r = 0.16). During the final test session, when habituation might influence male interest in the stimuli, T was strongly correlated with viewing time (r = 0.80). Thus, the current study demonstrates a direct but context dependent relationship between testosterone and sexual interest in healthy young males.  相似文献

Objective: To assess the reliability of the standing measurement of hand‐to‐foot bioimpedance compared with measurements made in the lying position. Research Methods and Procedures: In 205 volunteers 6 to 89 years of age, 111 males and 94 females from six ethnic groups, effects of posture, time, and age on hand‐to‐foot resistance were studied over a range of body size. The effect of time in a position on resistance was also recorded in a small subset (n = 10), and repeat measurements over 3 days at the same time of the day were recorded in another subset (n = 12). Results: Lying impedance was consistently higher than standing, with the relationship (resistance lying/resistance standing) for the children (5 to 14 years) being 1.031, progressing to a ratio of 1.016 in those >60 years. The time spent static in either position did change resistance measurements—a decrease of up to 9 Ω (mean 5 Ω, 1.0%) over 10 minutes of standing and an increase of up to 7 Ω (mean 3 Ω, 0.7%) with lying. Discussion: In the field, measurements of hand‐to‐foot bioimpedance can be made in the standing position, and, with appropriate adjustment, previously validated recumbent equations can be used. Given that errors in the measurement of height and weight also affect the reliability of the derivation of body fat from bioelectrical conductance, the errors that may arise from a more practical standing measurement rather than lying are minimal.  相似文献

Objectives: To establish the association between changes in height and prevalence of obesity between 1996 and 2004 in Chilean preschool children. Research Methods and Procedures: Children registered in the Junta Nacional de Jardines Infantiles (JUNJI) preschool program were routinely measured three times a year and in consecutive years. Two indices [weight‐for‐height z‐scores (WHZ) and BMI centiles] were used to define obesity. Height‐for‐age z‐scores (HAZ) were used to define stature. Generalized estimating equations were used to describe the relationship between stature and obesity while controlling for repeated measurements in children. Results: The prevalence of obesity in Chilean preschool children has remained relatively constant over the past 9 years when either index is used. The prevalence of stunted (HAZ ≤2) children has decreased, while the proportion of children who are tall (HAZ >2) has increased. Using WHZ to define obesity, stunted children do not seem to be at increased risk of obesity when compared with children of normal height. Tall children were strongly protected from obesity when either criterion was used to define obesity. Discussion: The lack of association between stunting and obesity using WHZ ≥2 likely reflects the fact that Chile is in the post‐transitional phase of the nutrition transition, and stunting is no longer a risk factor for obesity; however, the associations observed between stunting and BMI suggest that either WHZ or BMI, or both, are inaccurate criteria to define overweight. Conclusions: There is a unique relationship between stature and obesity in preschool children that is different from that observed in older children in the same population.  相似文献

Objective: The objective of this investigation was to examine the relationship between BMI and waist circumference (WC) by gender and race subgroups from U.S. population‐based data from 1959 to 2004 and to investigate the trend in WC over calendar time. Research Methods and Procedures: Demographic and anthropometric cross‐sectional data on 30,730 participants 18 to 79 years old across five national surveys were included. We regressed WC on BMI while controlling for age in each time period for blacks and whites by gender. Results: The relationship between BMI and WC as characterized by the slope of the linear regression of WC on BMI does not seem to be changing significantly over time. A small (range, 0.08 to 0.27 cm/yr) increase in WC over time was observed. Discussion: The implications of these findings for public health and for understanding any extant changes in the BMI‐mortality rate relationship remain to be elucidated.  相似文献

This study reports on the first experimental research designed specifically for Manta birostris behavior. The authors attempted to learn about the feeding behavior and environmental cues influencing this behavior, as well as general cognitive ability. The preconditioned Manta's ability to identify food, on the basis of a fraction of the ordinary food signal complex, was tested. The opening of cephalic fins was considered a good indicator of feeding motivation level. The study subject animal used its biological clock to predict time and also associated a specific location with food, suggesting an ability to build up a cognitive map of its environment. Both underwater visual stimuli and olfactory stimuli had a very intense effect on food searching behavior over a 30 m distance, in contrast to visual signs from above the water surface. In addition, although an underwater visual signal resulted in a more intense response than from an olfactory signal, the specimen did not discriminate between different objects tested on the basis of visual sensation. It could therefore be suggested that food searching behavior of Mantas are governed by triggering stimuli, including smell or visual recognition, and modulated by the cognitive spatial map stored in their long‐term memory. These findings will hopefully prove useful while devising protecting policies in the natural environment and/or while keeping these animals in captivity. Nucleotide sequences from the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and 5.8S gene were used to infer the phylogeny of Tilia species (represented by 13 distinct populations) growing in different geographical areas of Hyrcanian forests in northern Iran. Four well-supported lineages were revealed, including that of a new species, T. hyrcana, with stellate trichomes on both sides of the leaves and petiole. T. hyrcana is a well-supported cladospecies, with the ITS sequence and secondary structure following the diagnosable phylogenetic species concept, and is also characterized by a distinct morphology. A controversial species is Tilia rubra subsp. caucasica, with three different forms—an assemblage of taxa characterized by a lack of stellate trichomes on leaves—while Tilia begonifolia is distinguished by stellate trichomes on the underside of both leaves and petiole. The fourth lineage group, T. dastyla, is characterized by the presence of trichomes on the style. A single taxon found in the west of the Hyrcanian forest region is similar to T. begonifolia, but due to the former being located in a distinct group, a reassessment of the diagnostic morphology is recommended. ITS sequence data also suggested a closer relationship between T. rubra and T. begonifolia. Compensatory base change analysis was not strong enough to separate individual species within the Tilia genus. In general, the study supports the utility of ITS sequence data and secondary structure as accessory taxonomic characteristics with which to help clarify the systematics of the Tilia genus.  相似文献

Data from natural populations have suggested a disconnection between trait heritability (variance standardized additive genetic variance, VA) and evolvability (mean standardized VA) and emphasized the importance of environmental variation as a determinant of trait heritability but not evolvability. However, these inferences are based on heterogeneous and often small datasets across species from different environments. We surveyed the relationship between evolvability and heritability in >100 traits in farmed cattle, taking advantage of large sample sizes and consistent genetic approaches. Heritability and evolvability estimates were positively correlated (r = 0.37/0.54 on untransformed/log scales) reflecting a substantial impact of VA on both measures. Furthermore, heritabilities and residual variances were uncorrelated. The differences between this and previously described patterns may reflect lower environmental variation experienced in farmed systems, but also low and heterogeneous quality of data from natural populations. Similar to studies on wild populations, heritabilities for life‐history and behavioral traits were lower than for other traits. Traits having extremely low heritabilities and evolvabilities (17% of the studied traits) were almost exclusively life‐history or behavioral traits, suggesting that evolutionary constraints stemming from lack of genetic variability are likely to be most common for classical “fitness” (cf. life‐history) rather than for “nonfitness” (cf. morphological) traits.  相似文献

The sparseness of the encoding of stimuli by single neurons and by populations of neurons is fundamental to understanding the efficiency and capacity of representations in the brain, and was addressed as follows. The selectivity and sparseness of firing to visual stimuli of single neurons in the primate inferior temporal visual cortex were measured to a set of 20 visual stimuli including objects and faces in macaques performing a visual fixation task. Neurons were analysed with significantly different responses to the stimuli. The firing rate distribution of 36% of the neurons was exponential. Twenty-nine percent of the neurons had too few low rates to be fitted by an exponential distribution, and were fitted by a gamma distribution. Interestingly, the raw firing rate distribution taken across all neurons fitted an exponential distribution very closely. The sparseness a s or selectivity of the representation of the set of 20 stimuli provided by each of these neurons (which takes a maximal value of 1.0) had an average across all neurons of 0.77, indicating a rather distributed representation. The sparseness of the representation of a given stimulus by the whole population of neurons, the population sparseness a p, also had an average value of 0.77. The similarity of the average single neuron selectivity a s and population sparseness for any one stimulus taken at any one time a p shows that the representation is weakly ergodic. For this to occur, the different neurons must have uncorrelated tuning profiles to the set of stimuli.  相似文献

Summary Current evidence suggests that many animals trade off energy gain against the risk of predation while feeding. In contrast, energetic considerations alone have proven successful in explaining and predicting the behaviour of feeding hummingbirds. This success may reflect the relative lack of natural predation on hummingbirds, but this study suggests that it may additionally reflect the lack of studies taking a predation perspective. In particular, when Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) are faced with an obstructed view of their surroundings, they engage in behaviour suggestive of anti-predatory vigilance. In doing so, they voluntarily reduce their rate of energy intake. These birds also forgo better feeding opportunities that occur close to the ground, where observations suggest they are wary of opportunistic predators such as roadrunners (Geococcys californianus). While energy-based concepts will remain useful in the study of hummingbird feeding behaviour, the lack of predation on these birds should not be equated with an insensitivity to the risk of predation. This realization may lead to further insights into hummingbird-plant interactions, and hummingbird biology in general.  相似文献

A survey was conducted from June 2012 to May 2013 in the Institute for Agricultural Research Jatropha plantation along Shika road to determine the progress of incidence and severity of Jatropha dieback caused by Fusarium sp. over a year. The disease incidence did not significantly differ among the months under review while disease severity was highest in August and lowest in March 2013.  相似文献

A pilot field study was conducted in Sulawesi (Indonesia) to assess the status of macaque populations on the island. Wild and captive animals were sampled, mainly in border areas between presumed different species. The five species investigated were Macaca maurus, M. tonkeana, M. hecki, M. nigrescens, and M. nigra, for which morphological and gene frequency data suggested the presence of hybridization zones. Some individuals within these zones showed intermediate or mosaic morphology between parental forms. These individuals also had intermediate gene frequencies for most of the polymorphic systems investigated. Karyotypes were identical in all species, and no cytogenetic barrier to hybridization existed between species. A review of the recent literature also provided evidence for hybridization between Sulawesi macaques. Clinical frequencies in both morphological and biomolecular traits perhaps can be best explained by the operation of gene flow between the various forms of macaques on the island. However, additional data are necessary before current classification schemes are revised. The unique opportunity and need of further study of Sulawesi macaques for a range of evolutionary questions is emphasized.  相似文献
