There are substantial riverine and sewage particulate inputs into Dublin Bay. The main river, the R. Liffey, accounts for almost 85% of the riverine input, which amounts to 37.1 t d–1 of SPM. The sewage input, which is discharged into the estuary, is slightly less at 35.3 t d–1. The combined inputs deliver 17.4 t d–1, 2.9 t d–1and 1.2 t d–1of particulate C, N and P, respectively, to the Bay as a whole. Although the particulate N load accounts for just 20% of the total N input, the retention of particulates within the system, and the subsequent remobilisation of N from the sediments is heavily implicated in the macroalgal blooms. A particulate mass balance of SPM, and of C, N and P for the South Lagoon showed no consistent pattern of import/export except that the fluxes of the individual elements reflected SPM load and varied with quantity rather than quality. The molar C:N ratio was around 6:1 although on occasion values approaching 3:1 were obtained, indicating very high quality and potentially labile SPM. The controlling factors in the budget appeared to be the water velocities and to a lesser extent, the SPM load, which surprisingly was no greater on a spring tide than on a neap. In this shallow, and primarily intertidal, system, wind- or wave-driven resuspension may exert more influence than predictable factors such as tidal range.  相似文献

Interference is an important component of food competition but is often difficult to detect and measure in natural animal populations. Although interference has been shown to occur between oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus L. feeding on mussels Mytilus edulis L., four previous studies have not detected interference between oystercatchers feeding on cockles Cerastoderma edule L. In contrast, this study detected interference between cockle-feeding oystercatchers in the Baie de Somme, France. Prey stealing (kleptoparasitism), one of the main causes of interference between mussel-feeders, also occurred between oystercatchers in the Baie de Somme. The kleptoparasitism rate was related to the natural variation in the food supply, tending to be higher when cockles were rare. Feeding rate was negatively related to competitor density, so providing evidence for interference, but, as in mussel-feeders, only above a threshold density of about 50–100 birds ha−1. The strength of interference at a fixed competitor density was related to the cockle food supply, usually being greater when cockles were rare. Previous studies probably failed to detect interference between cockle-feeders because competitor densities were too low, or cockles were too abundant, or because they were not conducted during late winter when interference is most intense. The study shows that natural variation in the food supply can influence the strength of interference within an animal population and provides support for those behaviour-based interference models which predict that the strength of interference will be greatest when competitor densities are high and prey scarce.  相似文献

A conceptual model of the adaptive structure of offshore bottom communities through seasonal patterns of pelagic-benthic coupling is tested by comparing the success of suprabenthic, shelf sub-communities of gammarideans selected in three areas differing in trophic status: the eutrophic Baie des Chaleurs and two oligotrophic ecosystems, the Bay of Fundy and the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary.The relative amount of primary production appears to affect both species richness and total density. It is higher in the very productive Baie des Chaleurs, implying tightly coupled pelagic-benthic links. In the Bay of Fundy, gammaridean density, although lower than in the Baie des Chaleurs, is higher than in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary, but it appears to be characterized by smaller size at maturity or selection of smaller species of the same taxa. The Baie des Chaleurs community may be more biologically accommodated than those of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary and the Bay of Fundy, which are physically less stable. In the latter, all trophic guilds appear less abundant, but scavengers-predators retain a similar relative success in all three ecosystems, presumably from being more remote from the seasonal pelagic food supply in the trophic chain. In both oligotrophic systems, slope species compete efficiently with shelf species in their preferred depth zone, presumably because of their natural adaptation to food scarcity.The amplitude of vertical migrations by suprabenthic gammarideans appears to be higher in the Baie des Chaleurs, possibly to favor horizontal redistribution to new patches of first-quality food on the very stable and homogeneous mud basin of the Baie. Trends of seasonal abundance for ten gammaridean species in the Bay of Fundy confirm the reality of swimming guilds previously observed in the Baie des Chaleurs.  相似文献

The study of the intertidal benthic population dynamics in three estuaries of the English Channel (Baie des Veys, Seine estuary, Baie de Somme:France) brings to light two types of species:

  • key-species which directly respond to the local disturbance of the environmental conditions in their densities (Spionidae, Capitellidae) and in their growth rates (Cerastoderma edule);
  • target-species such as Macoma balthica which can endure brief changes in the environmental factors and shows no sign of long-lasting consequences on its population dynamics; yet, it fully integrates long-term changes through its numbers and productivity.
  • The parallel between such a regular study of the seasonal variations on selected sites and various base line surveys allows the authors to discuss the COST 647 sampling programm in order to selectrms, range of temperature) from human disturbances (embankments, chemical pollution, eutrophication). Diverse hypothesis are suggested which bring about several research topics to be developed within a european cooperation.  相似文献

    A stratified methodology for water sampling on tidal flats was adopted in 1988 and 1989 in the Bay of Somme. Analyses of nutrients, particulate matter and faecal germs showed the poor mixing of fresh and marine water and the weakness of stratification of the water column. Freshwater is pushed by marine water to the inner reaches of the bay and there are only a few lenses with true estuarine characteristics. In 1990, water was sampled simultaneously on the Somme river, the tidal flats and in the open sea, in order to point out estuarine gradients of several physical and chemical parameters and their evolution during a tidal cycle. The role of continental inputs was confirmed for faecal pollution, nitrate (20–25 mg l−1), nitrite and silicate. The importance of ammonium excreted by the estuarine benthic populations was highlighted. High concentrations of continental chlorophyll (450 mg m−3) were also measured and contribute, with nitrates and ammonium, to eutrophication in the Bay of Somme. Pollution of the southern part of the bay by marine waters was regularly observed during the flow, raising doubts about the purifying capacity of sea-water and the conservation of faecal bacteria. A regular survey of fresh-water inputs and sea-water quality, offshore and within the bay, is considered to enable estimation of their respective influences in eutrophication processes in the Bay of Somme.  相似文献

    While climate change is rapidly impacting marine species and ecosystems worldwide, the effects of climate warming on coastal fish nurseries have received little attention despite nurseries’ fundamental roles in recruitment and population replenishment. Here, we used a 26‐year time series (1987–2012) of fish monitoring in the Bay of Somme, a nursery in the Eastern English Channel (EEC), to examine the impacts of environmental and human drivers on the spatial and temporal dynamics of fish functional structure during a warming phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). We found that the nursery was initially dominated by fishes with r‐selected life‐history traits such as low trophic level, low age and size at maturity, and small offspring, which are highly sensitive to warming. The AMO, likely superimposed on climate change, induced rapid warming in the late 1990s (over 1°C from 1998 to 2003), leading to functional reorganization of fish communities, with a roughly 80% decline in overall fish abundance and increased dominance by K‐selected fishes. Additionally, historical overfishing likely rendered the bay more vulnerable to climatic changes due to increased dominance by fishing‐tolerant, yet climatically sensitive species. The drop in fish abundance not only altered fish functional structure within the Bay of Somme, but the EEC was likely impacted, as the EEC has been unable to recover from a regime shift in the late 1990s potentially, in part, due to failed replenishment from the bay. Given the collapse of r‐selected fishes, we discuss how the combination of climate cycles and global warming could threaten marine fish nurseries worldwide, as nurseries are often dominated by r‐selected species.  相似文献

    According to a recent demographic survey, the population structure of Pectinaria koreni might fit a source–sink metapopulation model at least at a regional scale. Spatial and temporal genetic structure of the populations present in the Baie de Seine (eastern Baie de Seine and Baie des Veys) was assessed using four highly polymorphic microsatellite loci which have revealed strong intra-locality genetic diversity. In the eastern Baie de Seine, both temporal (1994–1996) and spatial (1994) genetic differentiation were relatively low but significantly different from zero despite a 15-day dispersing larval stage. Such structures may be explained by the settlement of larvae from different gene pools and differing recruitment histories among sites within the eastern Baie de Seine. At a larger scale, similar levels of spatial differentiation were observed in 1999 between the eastern Baie de Seine and the Baie des Veys. The lack of any significant differences in gene diversity and allelic richness rules out a source–sink functioning at the scale of our study. The present paper provides further knowledge on the population dynamics of a univoltine species and its persistence in a highly dispersive environment via a shifting spatial mosaic.     Temporal and spatial variability in gonad development, duration of spawning period, and size/age at maturity were investigated in sand flathead, Platycephalus bassensis. A 3‐year study (2001–2003) revealed that variation in gonad weight with somatic weight was a function of an interaction between season and study location (Coles Bay, Georges Bay, and Tamar River estuary). Highest gonad weight was recorded in Coles Bay in early summer, which in comparison to Georges Bay, was approximately 50% higher and occurred 3 months later. Tamar River mature individuals were reproductively inactive during the spawning season. The proportion of mature individuals at different stages of maturity differed significantly among the three locations across all times. Coles Bay individuals were reproductively active from October to March, while in Georges Bay females with hydrated oocytes were seen in September but were absent from the population by November. Interannual variation in initiation and duration of spawning activity was evident in each location. Apart from male size at maturity, for both sexes the size and age at maturity (L50) was higher in Georges Bay compared to Coles Bay. The results emphasize the necessity of temporal and spatial management based on population differences in reproductive ecology.  相似文献

    Summary Oysters, suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediment and seawater samples were collected from West Galveston Bay, Texas over a 16-month period and analyzed for the presence ofVibrio vulnificus, a naturally-occurring human marine pathogen. Detection and enumeration ofV. vulnificus was performed using a species-specific monoclonal antibody (mAb FRBT37) in an enzyme immunoassay (EIA)-most probable number (MPN) procedure capable of detecting as few as 2000 target organisms.V. vulnificus was not detected in seawater, oyster or SPM samples during the cold weather months, but was detected at low levels in several sediment samples during this time period. Increased levels of the organism were first observed in early spring in the sediment, and then in SPM and oysters. The major increase inV. vulnificus occurred only after the seawater temperature had increased above 20°C and the winter-spring rainfall had lowered the salinity below 16. The highestV. vulnificus levels at each site were associated with suspended particulate matter. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that (1)V. vulnificus over-winters in a floc zone present at the sediment-water interface, (2) is resuspended into the water column in early spring following changes in climatic conditions, (3) colonizes the surfaces of zooplankton which are also blooming during early spring and (4) are ingested by oysters during their normal feeding process.  相似文献

    Summary Two Bremerhaven caissons were used to investigate the interactions of cadmium (Cd) with sea water, particulate matter, sediments, suspended particular matter (SPM), and organisms in enclosed sea water-sediment systems, on the tidal mud flats of Jade Bay (FRG). One caisson was artificially contaminated by continuously injecting cadmium (as a chloride) so as to maintain a Cd concentration of 100 g/l in the inflowing water of each tidal cycle for 22 days. The other caisson was used as a control system. About 30% of the total Cd introduced into the caisson was transferred from the aqueous phase to the other phases during each tidal cycle. Cadmium appears to accumulate in elements of the system in the order SPM, organisms, sediments, water. SPM, initially low in Cd entering the system, rapidly accumulated Cd from solution after the first tidal cycle and the concentration continued to increase during the experiment. Particulate Cd transferred to the sediments results in the development of a Cd-rich layer that attained a depth of 4 cm over the course of the experiment. Among the biota, the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) progressively accumulated the highest concentrations of Cd whereas other taxa, like polychaetes, accumulated less of the metal. Differnces in Cd accumulation appear to be due to the habitats of the different species and their ability to assimilate Cd from the dissolved and particulate phases. Together, the data indicate that in the contamination of tidal mud flats with aqueous cadmium most of the metal would remain available to the organisms in the aqueous phases and weakly bound to particulate matter. This would present the greatest environmental danger to filter feeders but not to animals living in the sediments.  相似文献
